Welcome to 2016! What will this new year hold? Perhaps 2015 was a great year for you and you’re looking forward to building on that into 2016. Perhaps 2015 was a rough year for you and you’re more than happy to put it behind you. Either way, a new year gives an opportunity to draw a ‘line in the sand’ and make a new start.

A significant part of making a new start can be forgiveness. Forgiveness is powerful and occasionally we need the reminder of a new year to stop, recalibrate, and take stock of ourselves to see if we are carrying any baggage of unforgiveness that we should drop as we enter the 2016.

Unforgiveness can tear apart families. We can carry bitterness around with us for years. And yet the irony is that my unforgiveness usually affects me more than the person I’m not forgiving. The Bible talks about bitterness and unforgiveness becoming like a vine that wraps around a healthy plant. If that vine is left untended, it will ultimately strangle the plant so that there is nothing left other that the vine. There are some people who become so bitter and unforgiving that their own bitterness ends up defining them. It’s a tragedy.

A relative of mine once had a run-in with the owner of the local corner store. It wasn’t anything massive – it was just an unsavoury moment. However, they never forgave the shop owner and for the next 15 years, they would walk twice as far to another corner store to buy small items (actually passing by the original shop) because of bitterness. The unforgiveness wasn’t really costing the shop owner anything significant. But unforgiveness was costing my relative comparatively a lot.

On the other hand, forgiveness is liberating. It liberates both the person being forgiven as well as the person who is forgiving.

Forgiveness releases us from bitterness and the stress that comes with bitterness.

Yet. Forgiveness can often be a very hard thing to do. When things have been said or done that are hurtful, it can be hard to let go. Sometimes, we need help from a counsellor to be released from that unforgiveness. But it’s worth the effort because the power of forgiveness is manifold.

The Bible reminds us “Love keeps no record of wrongs.” (1 Corinthians 13:5) Of course, the greatest model of forgiveness is Jesus Christ who, while hanging on the cross would cry out to his heavenly Father, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) As you enter a new year, are there barriers of unforgiveness in your family? Take the opportunity that a new year offers to forgive and move forward. It will be good for the person whom you forgive; it will be good for you; and it will be good for your family.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis If you’ve watched more than your fair share of Play School, like I have, you’ll be familiar with the little song “Changes, changes, everywhere...� and you may find, like me, that it pops into your head on a more frequent basis than is desirable.

The beginning of a new year has the potential to bring changes into our lives. As I reflect on 2015, I am struck by how many unexpected things occurred.

We knew pretty early on last year that our daughter intended to volunteer in Nepal for two months; what we didn’t know was that the country would suffer a significant earthquake, which in turn added to our stress levels as parents as she decided to still proceed with the trip.

We knew in April that my father would be taking a trip to England but it wasn’t until a fair bit later that we knew I would be going too (I had an amazing time, by the way!).

I won’t bore you with the other things 2015 held for us, but suffice to say, there were quite literally “changes, changes, everywhere...�!

There is no escaping change. Even if we dig our heels in and stubbornly refuse to change, it happens regardless.

We all know people who have difficulty with change, maybe you are one of those people yourself. In reality, as humans, we are creatures of habit and will most likely avoid change rather than embrace it.

Change can be scary. It’s unpredictable, which is, of course, what we have a problem with. It’s the uncertainty of something new that we buck against. Most of us don’t like not knowing the outcome of an action or event. It’s far easier to maintain the status quo than risk trying something new and things not working out.

Yet, there is so much to be gained from change. Just think of the many things that have required significant change to improve our way of life and provide opportunities for the betterment of us all as humans. Without change, there is no progression. Without change, we would stagnate.

So our decision, as we face this new year, is whether we are going to embrace change and greet it with open arms, or whether we are going to resist and stubbornly refuse to move.

And the decision is really about our thinking. Refusing to change ourselves is what will determine how we handle the changes happening around us. Our thinking and our own person are really the only areas we have true control over. We can’t make everyone and everything around us not change. Yet, if we are willing to change our thought patterns, our choices, our habits, we will find that the changes happening externally are much easier to cope with.

This coming year will most likely include changes; some we plan for and some we have no idea about yet. Why not get a jump start on change and begin by assessing your own thinking? We can better ready ourselves for the inevitable changes coming our way if we open our minds now to start accepting new ways, new people and new ideas.

Training your new puppy is positively rewarding at the Obedience Dog Club of Brisbane.

The Obedience Dog Club of Brisbane is the longest established dog training club in Queensland and has been helping dog owners to get the most out of their pets since 1961. If you’ve ever considered training your dog, the Obedience Dog Club is the place to start.

There are plenty of reasons to take your dog or puppy to obedience classes: • it gets the dog and the family out of the yard to have fun and do interesting things together; • it provides important early socialisation of puppies; • it will teach you training methods using rewards rather than corrections; • it improves the quality of your relationship with your dog; • it teaches you skills to help reduce undesirable behaviour in your dog; and • you meet people who love their dogs as much as you love yours.

“We use positive training methods using toys/play or food treats to encourage your puppy to learn the behaviours you want in a fun and positive way,” said committee member Jenny Gill. “Our trainers come from all walks of life and share a huge amount of knowledge between them from the multitude of dog breeds that frequent our grounds.

“We all give our time on a voluntary basis and have a diverse range of canine interests, such as agility, tracking, retrieving, endurance, lure coursing and other dog sports.”

The Obedience Dog Club of Brisbane, conveniently located in nearby Oxley, offers a range of course and training options for older dogs, as well as a puppy pre-school program for puppies between eight and 18 weeks.

What would you think if your dentist told you that you have a bad bite? The first thing you would think is “but I eat well” (sometimes too well, especially over the Christmas/New Year period). A bad bite is a simple way of describing problems with a mis-aligned bite or jaw joint problems. It is very common to diagnose as this is the cause of lots of dental problems, e.g. individual tooth pain, general teeth sensitivity, bleeding or receding gums, rapid wear of teeth, various head and neck pains, or a combination of any of these. Its easy to blame the bleeding gums on poor brushing or the head and neck pain on something else but often it’s the problems from the bite causing it.

Bite problems are also called Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and can be caused by a number of things: crowded teeth, twisted or rotated teeth, missing teeth and spaces, wisdom teeth pushing on the other teeth, head and neck injuries like whiplash, and diseases of the joint like arthritis, stress leading to grinding or clenching of the teeth.

What are the signs?

Noisy or ‘clicking’ or ‘wobbly’ jaw joints, regular headaches or neck pain, obvious worn down teeth, gums bleeding or receding causing the tooth to appear ‘longer’, stiff or sore muscles around the jaw joints, unusually sensitive teeth, breakage or fracture of teeth or fillings.

What can be done?

First, your dentist will need to analyse your bite and if a jaw disorder is diagnosed, they will recommend a treatment plan appropriate for your case. Everyone is different and every ‘bad bite’ is also different and very personal to you.This may involve adjusting the bite by reshaping certain spots of the teeth that interfere with normal biting and chewing and allowing your teeth to balance without any strain on the jaw joints. This is a pain free procedure.

Other times it may be necessary to relax the muscles with a TENS machine like physiotherapists use and provide an occlusal splint or bite plate which is worn like a mouth guard to stop the teeth putting strain on the joints thus allowing them to start healing. There are lots of other possible treatments that range all the way to surgery.

Luckily, most people don’t need that at all and except for surgery, there is no pain involved in these treatments.

Will treatment help?

The answer is yes, depending on the correct diagnosis. It is a fact that most people have a bite imbalance to some degree and many need no treatment because the muscles and teeth and jaw joints are tolerating the imbalance. The more difficult problems are inflamed or painful joints which may take some time to resolve depending on how long the problem has been present. If the pain and dysfunction is severe and the initial conservative treatment has not relieved the problem, then your dentist may refer you to a specialist for more involved treatment.

Most people are not even aware that their regular headaches or neck pains could be from a bad bite and might be easily resolved.

We are located in Grand Boulevard Shopping Centre Important safety improvements and capacity upgrades to Stapylton Road at Heathwood and Forest Lake have now been completed as part of an $18 million upgrade.

The upgrade supports current and future traffic needs along Stapylton Road which carries approximately 16,500 vehicles a day.

The upgrade has widened Stapylton Road from two lanes to four lanes between the Logan Motorway and Wadeville Street, completing a full a dual carriageway link between the Ipswich and Logan motorways, greatly improving access and travel times for motorists. The work has also made provision for future upgrades to six lanes.

The project complements the Blunder Road upgrade completed in 2011 and improves north-south connectivity by upgrading Stapylton Road to a four lane median divided carriageway with on-road bicycle lanes.

Local Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor said the upgrade would future proof Stapylton Road as traffic volumes continued to grow on the busy corridor. “This widening will be critical to cater to future growth in the area, as more and more families recognise what a great place it is to live.�

It will also deliver major benefits for future public transport routes with four indented bus bays installed in the upgrade.

New on-road cycling lanes and pedestrian footpaths will also improve access and safety along Stapylton Road for cyclists.

The works commenced in April 2015 and included: • an upgraded four lane, median divided carriageway; • upgrading the intersection at Sanctuary Drive, Parkwood Drive and Stapylton Road; • upgraded street lighting; • providing on-road bicycle lanes; • constructing pedestrian footpaths on both sides of Stapylton Road between Wadeville Street and the Logan Motorway.

The $18 million Stapylton Road project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Brisbane City Council, with $7.6 million and $10.5 million committed respectively.

KARANA DOWNS GOLF CLUB

When Katrina and the students from Allstar Performing Arts decided to produce a fund raising event by performing Thoroughly Modern Millie last September, the recipients of the proceeds were yet to be decided. “We just knew that it would be great for our students to help out other kids,� said Katrina. “And we wanted it to be something that they felt really involved in, so we needed just the right charity to give to.�

So when Katrina’s husband came across Little Ray of Giving, it just made sense for this to be the charity that would benefit from the funds raised.

Each Christmas the Ray White national initiative of Little Ray of Giving collects and hands out gifts to children in need. Ray White Forest Lake distributed the gifts together with members of Rotary Forest Lake who are enthusiastic supporters of many community events in our suburb.

Katrina and the students were excited to be able to help bring some Christmas cheer to children living in disadvantaged circumstances in our local area.

Preparations are already underway for this years fundraising production of Alice in Wonderland, which is scheduled for the middle of the year.

Help others have a fresh start for a new year D

omestic violence is at epidemic proportions within Australia, with one in three women being affected in their lifetime and two women being killed per week at the hands of their spouse or ex partner.

Friends With Dignity is a not for profit community organisation that aims to provide practical services and support to those displaced due to domestic violence by providing practical assistance to aid individuals and families affected by domestic violence.

This is carried out via three main avenues: • Sanctuaries - When those displaced by domestic violence make the transition from refuge to their own house, Friends With Dignity aims to provide all required household items and transform the house into a dignified new home within seven days. • Urgent Requests – When those who have been displaced by domestic violence require urgent (less than 48 hour) critical items, Friends With Dignity will aim to provide specified items. • Social Awareness - Friends With Dignity aims to create an active social movement initiating change by raising awareness of the damaging effects to individuals affected from social injustice, in particular domestic violence.

When women, children and men enter refuges and domestic violence shelters, quite often they have nothing but the clothes on their backs and are in need of items that the shelter cannot provide on short notice. The shelters contact Friends With Dignity requesting specific Items, and they in turn put a call out to a growing support network.

Donation coordinators manage the donations before the operations manager delivers them to the refuge workers.

Friends With Dignity is keen to hear from local residents interested in volunteering. Some of the roles available are donation coordinators, sanctuary team leaders and event and fundraising volunteers. Please send an email to volunteer@friendswithdignity.com.au if you’d like to know more about volunteering.

The following items are always needed and much appreciated: gift vouchers for supermarket and department stores, toiletries for women, children and men, good quality linen and towels, laundry supplies, kitchen supplies, nappies, formula and baby supplies.

It’s not often you see Santa brought into a carols night on a red vintage fire engine and led by a bagpiper!

The 2015 Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Carols, an initiative of Forest Lake Community Events, was a great night with more than 3000 people in attendance. A truly local night, highlighted by school choirs and performers from our community, the weather was kind and the atmosphere was festive.

The night was supported by local businesses including major sponsor, Heritage Bank, as well as Ray White Forest Lake, and Lake Dental. Thanks also to St John’s Anglican College for hosting the night as well as the many volunteers, churches and community groups that made the carols possible. It takes a large and committed team to bring the night together and, once again, this team did an amazing job!

Apart from being a great family night, the generosity of the community was also seen in raising over $900 towards local school chaplaincy.

From the opening by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk through to the grand fireworks finale, it was another memorable night for our community. Set aside the date for next year’s carols now – 4 December 2016.

Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute Rescue of Queensland Inc. (SHAMROQ) is a non-profit and charitable organisation run by a volunteer network based and operating in Queensland. The organisation seeks to rescue, rehabilitate (where required) and rehome abandoned or unwanted Northern Breed dogs, such as, but not limited to: Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Shiba Inu, Siberian Huskies and crosses of these breeds.

These dogs, which are acquired from pounds and shelters across Queensland, are then placed in loving foster homes, where volunteer staff get to know their personalities and what kind of home environment and family situation that they are best suited to.

During their time in care, all vet work is checked, which includes desexing, microchipping, vaccination, and various worming treatments.

Being a not for profit group, SHAMROQ relies on foster carers to take dogs into their homes and care for them whilst they are being readied for adoption. Foster carers are a valuable part of the organisation and the more suitable carers that are signed up, the more dogs can be saved.

If you are interested in being a foster carer, there are some specific requirements due to the breed of the dogs needing homes such as secure fencing and the ability to handle the quirks of the different breeds.

Algester Update Happy New Year! As the Member for Algester, I would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2016.

As we start the New Year I wanted to take the time to remind everyone that I am here to help and provide assistance to the community.

Over the past year I was out every Sunday at the Grand Avenue Market talking to locals and sharing in a successful community market. I have been proud to support our schools, churches and community groups in putting together fantastic events, raise valuable funds and bring together our vibrant community.

Some events I was proud to support in 2015 included the Grand Avenue Ekka Show Day, Run4Kids Loop the Lake and the Forest Lake Community Carols.

During this time I have had the privilege to work with wonderful community groups, P & C’s and churches in our community and I look forward to continuing to support locals with events and activities this year.

This year I also look forward to working with the community on my Forest Lake Pledge Campaign. Our community is passionate about supporting victims of domestic violence and I have joined with local faith leaders and community groups to build a coalition of concerned individuals who want to help end the scourge of domestic violence.

The Forest Lake Pledge is an opportunity for all of us to pledge ourselves to speak out and act against domestic and family violence, and to share information to support people affected by domestic violence.

If you are interested in signing the pledge and joining the campaign please contact my office. I am planning on organising a march around the lake to demonstrate our community’s conviction to this cause.

A happy New Year to all. Another wonderful Christmas has passed and we have cherished memories from time well spent with our families. Has your New Year resolution lasted more than a couple of days?

Many of us are now enjoying our annual holidays either within our wonderful state or maybe further afield. Whichever is the case, I’m sure you have plans in place so your garden and lawn will be looked after in your absence. Nothing worse than returning from that well deserved holiday, only to find your lawn full of weeds and plants dying in the garden. Remember a messy yard is similar to having your letter box full of junk mail advertising to any undesirables that you are away.

In the garden it is still summer, our hottest season, and watering must not be overlooked in order to keep flowers showing their colourful array and vegetables still to produce our home-grown produce. If you have not tried growing your own vegetables, I recommend you ‘give it a go’ as all home vegetables have a stronger flavour than the ones we purchase and not forgetting the freshness of the produce. I like picking several leaves from my Cos lettuce and a couple of tomatoes, taking them inside and including them in a salad and consuming within an hour of being picked. One cannot beat that for freshness. In addition, I know what organic fertilizer has been used on them.

Home grown tomatoes are renowned for their flavour, and a heavy crop-bearing variety is the cherry tomato. This variety is great for beginners as you can pick the crop all year round.

It is rewarding when you add them to the summer salads.

Cherry tomatoes will grow in pots but remember to fertilize and water regularly.

A couple of jobs to do in January is to pick out the growing tips on poinsettias as the plant will become bushier, which will mean more blooms in the coming winter. Also prune bougainvillea and other climbers that are threatening to take over the whole garden and don’t forget to gather your lawn clippings as it can be composted into a wonderful plant food.

We have a list of many interesting guest speakers booked for the year and we will commence with Bernard Yorke discussing the growing and hybridizing of Begonias. With so many different types of begonias you will find Bernard’s topic interesting and rewarding.

The flyers for our bus trip to The Lost Garden in March will be out towards the end of this month. To ensure your seat, please book early. Enjoy the rest of the holidays and see you at the February meeting.

The Forest Lake Wasps are celebrating ten years of local rugby with two brand new initiatives in 2016.

EST LA Soon into the school year they will be holding two ‘Come and Try’ days to coincide R with their sign-on weeks. At the clubhouse, Forest Lake Sporting Fields, College Avenue, Forest Lake, there will be a carnival atmosphere on 13 and 20 February from 2-4pm. Visitors can watch a game, take part in a ball skills workshop, have a go at the tackle bag, chow down on a sausage – and sign on! Wasps volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions parents may have. Families can also register for 2016 at two sign on days, 11 and 18 February, opposite the Lake on Forest Lake Boulevard.

R UGBY Also this year, players siblings can finally get a chance to don a jersey and throw a ball around. Players not old enough for U6s, can join the brand new ‘Little Stingers’ team and enjoy 45 minutes of fun on a Thursday afternoon while their older brothers and sisters are training. Sign on for ‘Little Stingers’ is the same time as the others, so why not bring the whole family to Come and Try Day. The Wasps boast fees that are amongst the best value of junior sports in the area. From the desk of Angela Owen-Taylor Parkinson Ward Councillor Welcome to 2016 and I am sure this year will be a great one for everyone.

In late December the $9.5million road widening project at Stapylton Road was completed and I was pleased to have been on site with Deputy Mayor and Chairman of Infrastructure, Cr Adrian Schrinner for the final inspection.

This road project will reduce local traffic congestion and improve safety in our suburbs.

In addition, this links to the $55million Blunder Road deviation, initiated by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk (back when he was Deputy Mayor & Chairman of Infrastructure) and me, which was completed a couple of years ago, and will also be an enhancement for the $18 million upgrade to the Johnson and Stapylton Road intersection which is planned to be undertaken. I am pleased to have secured funding for these vital connecting routes in our outer lying suburbs.

A project I have been working on for a number of years is now coming to fruition with the near completion of the Forest Lake Community Hall. This important project will provide a home base for many clubs and non profit organisations in our local community. I look forward to seeing groups settled in and activating the space.

For those who are not already aware, a new school site for Pallara State School will be opening at the end of January at the intersection of Wadeville Street and Ritchie Road, Pallara. Please be mindful of this area as there will be children accessing this precinct in the lead up to the opening for school open days and registration purposes.

Save the dates - As Patron of Forest Lake Rugby Union (Wasps) I would like to invite you to the Come and Try Days on 13 and 20 February between 2 and 4 pm on the Forest Lake Sports Fields. Christmas is a great time to be with friends and last month, 104 members and guests of Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club gathered to celebrate and enjoy our Christmas party. Our Club provided a generous three-course meal with tea/coffee and drinks for everyone. There were Christmas gifts for all, time for some dancing and 50 raffles were drawn with many lucky members going home with their arms full.

It is incredible that 2016 has already arrived, and I hope you enjoyed a Merry Christmas and a wonderful new year.

December was another busy month for the local community, with one particularly pleasing experience being the Heritage Forest Lakes Christmas Carols, where I was given the immense honour of opening the event. There was an incredible turn-out from our community, who came to enjoy the carolling, dancing, and of course, those spectacular fireworks to finish the show. Congratulations are in order for the army of volunteers and local organisations who help out every year to make these events happen.

It was also the time of year to again support Happy House Playgroup with their Christmas Wishing Tree Appeal sponsored

by Kmart. The Forest Lake based group took part in the Kmart initiative, which annually helps collect more than half a million gifts to spread some festive cheer to the less fortunate.

In other festive news, the annual community get together was again held at the Dutch Club, and it was wonderful to catch up with so many members of the local community organisations, schools and volunteer coordinators. I was a pleasure to thank those that help the community so selflessly, and I think the afternoon was a great break from the hustle and bustle of work and school.

Let me finish by saying that January is a time for friendship and support within the community. It is as easy as checking in on your neighbours, and guaranteeing that your home is ready for storm season. Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Welcome to 2016. Who is ready for another great year? So much to see and do. We will never run out of great places to visit in the great south east and beyond in our wonderful State of Queensland.

There is no meeting in January as we all take a bit of a break to recharge our batteries for another year of fun, friendship and fabulous trips and activities, which suit both singles and couples.

Come along next month on Wednesday 10 February to Lions Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands. We meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 9.30am sign in for a 10am start.

Come and see what we have planned for 2016. We will have a guest speaker who is certain to be very interesting. Why not join us for lunch at Lions after the meeting. To our members who are unwell, best wishes for a return to good health.

During the first week of December, many of our members enjoyed the Lord Mayor’s Seniors Christmas Party and Concert at the City Hall Auditorium. The MC was very funny and the entertainers were fabulous. We look forward each year to attending these concerts and are very grateful for the tickets from our local Councillor. December’s Christmas lunch and mini meeting was held at McLeod Golf Club, a stunning venue. We were very well looked after and the Christmas decorations on our tables were so nice. Fabulous raffle prizes were won by lucky folk and we all enjoyed the special treat of a performance by Bill Alexander.

President Dan Baldwin thanked his Committee, Meeting Volunteers and Members for making 2015 such a wonderful year for all of us. Christmas wishes were exchanged at the end of what is always a lovely day.

Must share this with you. A group of members took a trip around the Warwick district for a few days in November. Plenty of sightseeing and really enjoyable company. The weather was warm but it did not stop us from having a lot of fun. What a wonderful way to get to know your fellow members better. More exciting away trips and day trips are on the Calendar for 2016.

We would like to share a paragraph of a letter of thanks included in a card from a farming family - “Your lovely boxes of goodies are so very much appreciated, with a lot of thought going into the items donated and terrific everyday items. In our box was a beautiful little box of soap that had been wrapped in what looked like handmade paper and wrapped in cellophane and ribbon, you could feel the love that had been sent with the gift. We are truly humbled and grateful for such generosity and comforted to know that people are thinking of their country cousins during this time.”

Connor McLaughlin, from Richlands Scout Group, was proud to be awarded his Australian Scout Medallion at the end of last year.

The Australian Scout Medallion is the highest award in the Scout Section. 2016 is already shaping up to be a busy one. The Forest Lake Community Hall has been progressing well and is nearly completed. I look forward to opening the hall in the near future and welcoming many of our local community groups into this new home base.

To ease local road congestion the road widening to 4 lanes has recently been completed on Stapylton Road Heathwood and this will improve safety for road users. This is one of the many road projects Council has delivered across our city and we will continue to deliver projects across Brisbane in 2016.

Cane toad poisoning Pet owners in Forest Lake always need to remember how dangerous cane toads are.

The stormy weather lately has been ideal for toads with a couple of mild poisonings already.

Poisoning occurs if your dog or, rarely if your cat, mouths or bites a live toad.

Cane toads secrete a sticky, white poison through glands behind their heads.

Profuse salivation, vomiting, disorientation, red and irritated gums, dilated pupils, muscle rigidity or spasms, convulsions, heart irregularities and sudden death are signs that may occur. Symptoms may develop within a few minutes as the poison rapidly enters the body through the gum linings.

If you see or think that your pet has mouthed a toad, you should immediately wash the mouth out with cool running water trying to direct the head towards the ground.

Rubbing the gums with a washer will help remove the sticky toxin. While someone is doing this, or if you have found you pet severely poisoned, your vet or an after hour’s vet should be contacted so your pet can be seen as soon as possible. Quick action can save your pets life. In many cases, poisoning may be so severe that it will be necessary to leave your pet for intensive care where their lives can hang in the balance for a few days.

Prevention is difficult as pets do not normally stop chasing toads and no resistance develops to the poison. If you are in an area with toads and you have a pet that can’t resist the temptation to chase toads, a nightly patrol of the yard is needed especially on wet nights. Pet owners often develop a sixth sense that identifies a type of bark that may indicate your pet has found a toad. This bark should always be investigated.

Forest Lake Men’s Shed Update

by Steve Bruford, President December marked the end of the first year of the Forest Lake Men’s Shed, from an initial mention in The Lake News in January 2015, we now have 50 names on our email list of interested men.

We are still looking for a spot to call home so we can start supporting our community and helping men in our community feel wanted and needed after retirement. The men’s shed gives great support and assistance with men’s health and helps men with depression and loneliness.

To raise money for our shed, we intend to have a garage sale this year, so if any readers would like to donate saleable goods that we can sell i.e. books, unwanted items from around the home etc, please contact me on 0421 520 804. I am happy to arrange pick up and advise of drop off locations.

People with negatively geared investment properties will likely be aware of the ability to reduce the tax withheld from their salaries and wages income by lodging an income tax withholding variation or ITWV. This enables one to receive the likely benefit of a large refund at the end of the tax year, as a result of allowable deductions exceeding rental income, in piecemeal fashion throughout the year.

Whether the taxpayer avails themselves of this opportunity is, of course, a personal choice. From a purely rational economic viewpoint, it makes sense to receive perhaps an extra $200 per fortnight rather than around $10,000 at the end of the year, particularly if one could apply that to a primary residence mortgage. On the other hand, $10,000 at the end of the year probably has a greater feeling of tangibility and utility than $200 per fortnight that may have partially disappeared on this and that.

Most people taking advantage of an ITWV are probably doing so because of a negatively geared investment property scenario. However, there are many other reasons why one could adopt this strategy. Logically, if one can do it for investment properties, one can also do it for a negatively geared share investment portfolio, although it will be important to factor in the impact of franked dividends and franking credits when making the application.

Another instance would be someone who receives a taxable car allowance but is required to utilise their own car for work related purposes most of the time. Quite apart from the cash operating expenses of the vehicle, for a new car the depreciation alone can be quite substantial in the first few years, and in many instances most of the tax paid on the allowance during the year will come back when one calculates the logbook claim at the end of the year.

There are several other examples where the ITWV application can be useful in terms of improving periodic cashflow. However, it is also important to make some reasonable estimates of the likely year end result. The ATO does not view too favourably the possibility of using the system to obtain considerable cashflow benefits throughout the year, only to have to pay a significant part of it back at tax time.

Beautiful fairways, verdant trees and nature displaying its finest was the background to enjoy an early Sunday morning breakfast. This was the Brookwater venue for the Probus Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christmas Breakfast. With a wide selection of delectable food on offer, it was difficult to choose one. Waffles and eggs benedict as well as the Chef â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s full breakfast was popular. It was well worth the drive to Brookwater.

Then two days later it was the Probus Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Annual Christmas lunch at the Mt Ommaney Lodge. A Reindeer Reception Committee comprising of Julie and Jenny with their amazing eye wear informed members about the seating arrangements. There were prizes for the best Christmas outfits so some members dressed up. Staff of the Mt Ommaney Lodge were the judges. There were some interesting outfits. Carmel was a lovely elf resplendent in green; Trish represented a decorated tree. Joyce was a nodding wide-eyed Santa and Shirley a reindeer. Barry tried to remain down to earth but sported a magnificent Christmas tree tie. Alan advertised various drinks on his bottle shirt. First prize went to Brian who disguised himself as a silver Christmas tree and second prize went to Marge who tried to be the angel on the tree but her wings were butterfly ones!

President Joan paid extra attention to welcoming Bert and Bette whom we had not seen for some time as they had not been well. She read a joke given to her by Bert who used to be our joker but Joan has replaced him. She then related one of her own jokes that made us enjoy a good laugh. Loud music brought all members to attention when in came a bellydancer. Merice certainly got attention and the blood rushing!

Brian, our poet-in-residence, delivered the Year in Retrospect and Jim recited a poem. Judy recited one learnt from her grandmother that had a twist at the end. Because the Club had so many gifts given to us, it was necessary to devise some trivia to hand out as prizes. Trivia was won by Lyn and Chris. Lyn and Val paid special tribute to all our sponsors viz. Hon. Annastacia Palasczuk, Premier of Queensland, Milton Dick, Councillor for Richlands, Malouf â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pharmacy, Pascoe Jewellers and Coles.

President Joan then thanked all members for their support and wished all a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
