Adopt a four-legged friend this year If you’re looking to welcome a four-legged companion into your home these school holidays, the RSPCA’s Pop Up Adoption is back on Saturday 13th January! There will be hundreds of cats and dogs available to adopt at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 9am to 4pm. Last year, 485 pets found their fur-ever homes on the day which was incredible. This year you can visit cats, dogs, puppies and kittens of all shapes, ages and sizes looking for homes. They will also have discounted adoption fees on the day. All RSPCA pets are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, worm and flea treated before heading to your home - so adoption is a great option! If you’re thinking of adopting a pet, head to www.popupadoption.com.au to find out more about the event, and you can also pre-register to adopt to save time on the day.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling The Club held its Annual End of Year Trip at Toowoomba over the 2nd and 3rd of December, 2017. This was our first trip to this venue and we weren’t disappointed. On Saturday, we played the Middle Ridge course and Sunday we played at City Golf. Both courses were some of the most picturesque courses we have played on for many years. The greens were soft and lush bent grass and the fairways never presented a bad lie – something we rarely see on our regular Brisbane courses. Results for Saturday were: A Grade winner – Dan McKay (34 pts.) and runner-up Brian Cruickshank on a count back (34 pts.). B Grade winner – Graham Frew (30 pts.) and runner-up Dani Dvornicich (count back 30 pts.). Other prizes went to Pat Ayling, Kirrily Brooke, Don Mitchell, Dan McKay, Brian Cruickshank, Gil Vargas and Dave Chettle. Sunday was our traditional Ambrose event and ‘Loud Outfit’ day. Results were: Winners - Mick Morley and Dani Dvornicich (64 ¾), Runner-up – Dave Chettle and Kevin Ferguson (67 ¼), Third – Brian Cruickshank and Richard Focken (68 ½). The Bradman Award wet to Jason White and Ian Whiteley (74). Other prizewinners on the day were Kevin Ferguson, Ben Lalor, Steve Donnell, Colin Brooke, Kirrily Brooke and Don Mitchell. The ‘Loud Outfit’ award went to Pat Ayling by unanimous vote! Our Annual Awards night was held in the City Golf Club with a fabulous Christmas dinner. Our 2017 Club Champion was Dan Jones on a count back from Josh Wilson (and Kevin Ferguson – a three way tie). The Most Improved awards for 2017 went to Brian Cruickshank (A), Ian Whiteley (B), and David Chettle (C). The Most Improved Runners-up awards went to Mick Morley (A), Carolyn Nottingham (B) and Kirrily Brooke (C). The 2017 Bradman Award went to Don Mitchell. Congratulations to all for a wonderful year of golf. Date claimer for the next game is January 21, 2018 at Wolston Park Golf Club, with an early 6.30am tee time. If you play golf and are interested in joining our club, please contact me, Pat on 0417 213 659. Thanks go to our Club Sponsors, Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake, the Jindalee Golf Club Professional and the Drummond Golf Club Underwood.

with Susannah Friis The start of a new year is always bursting with resolutions of new leaves to turn, promises, a fresh start and plans for new ventures - and in order for all those resolutions and determinations to become a reality, we need to decide many things. Deciding the colours of a new logo for that business you’ve always wanted to start, deciding on what fancy new gym wear to buy to go with that subscription, deciding to take the plunge on a new job or new degree are all important (granted, some more than others!) but the greatest decisions will be the ones we actually make. Does the thought of actually making a decision and putting it into motion frighten the life out of you? Well, if so, you’re not alone. When it comes to actually executing an important decision, many of us are like the proverbial ‘deer in headlights’. And don’t forget the third ‘F’ in the flight or fight scenario - freeze. Sometimes, oftentimes, we can become immobilised by the sheer weight of the decision facing us (to be fair, the gym gear is probably not too much of a high-stakes decision, so just pick something already!). Recently my son told me of a motto told often in his military training - An 80% decision is better than a 100% decision made too late. It’s true isn’t it? Sometimes, our hesitation because we just aren’t 100% sure, can lead to disastrous results, whereas, a decision that may not be as sure, is better than finally deciding and then discovering the opportunity has passed. Nothing in life is 100% certain (except death and taxes, as the saying goes!), so if we wait until there are no doubts or uncertainty, we often miss out on making the decision at all. I’m not promoting jumping into risky situations without weighing up the pros and cons, no, rather it is an acknowledgment that far too many of us are so scared of even calculated risk that we don’t end up moving at all. And then we wonder why our lives don’t change and continue to not be what we want or need - and we blame that sense of unfulfilment on circumstances, people around us or ‘fate’, instead of realising that we have been too afraid to make a decision. When I was younger, I really struggled with people who couldn’t make a decision - even about food or entertainment. I must be a bit more tolerant now because it doesn’t frustrate me as much as it used to, rather it leaves me feeling a bit sad. What can appear as easy-going - think “I don’t mind where we eat/what we do/what job I have - is often a front for a lack of confidence in their ability to make a decision. And I do wonder if it’s indicative of something else - no-one can blame you if you haven’t made any of the decisions. There’s something about decision-makers - they seem brave and bold. Yet the reality is we can all be decisionmakers. Sure, you might need to start off slowly but the truth is that we will live far richer and fuller lives for those 80% decisions than if we make decisions too late or not at all. This year, why not live on the wild side and ‘decide’ before it’s too late!

Monthly breakfasts bring business owners together Recognising the need to continually work on business development, no matter the size of your business, Lynne Spalding decided to start the Forest Lake Business Booster in November 2016. While each day she was feeling productive and meeting deadlines and helping clients, she was keen to connect with like-minded business people and discuss and swap ideas and issues. “Together, we have helped each other look at our businesses in a different light,” she said. “It is incredibly refreshing to work on your business in a positive environment with friendly conversation. “It’s been a steep learning curve in developing the group, but I’ve always believed that in order to grow, you need to step outside your comfort zone. For me, this has involved becoming comfortable with presenting in front of a group and finding inspiring guest speakers for us all to learn from.” “I love being able to give back to the community as well as having a community of local business people to now connect with,” she said. Lynne said that attendees enjoy being able to express their opinions and experiences with other business people who face the same issues and challenges as they do. “One attendee told me recently that they didn’t realise before coming along just how important it was to keep a close eye on their numbers, to conduct regular marketing initiatives and to ensure they had systems in place to protect their business from fraud and costly errors.” The breakfast meetings are held every month on the second Friday of the month at the Forest Lake Salvation Army Centre. The cost is $25 and bookings are essential. This year Business Booster Breakfasts are being introduced in the format of a Masterclass. If you are looking for a business group to connect to without having to travel outside the area, please email Lynne@ fcsglobal.com.au.
Family Focus
with Mark Mackay
The changeover of years is such an arbitrary thing. There really is nothing very different between December 31 and January 1 - the birds don’t suddenly sing a different tune, the sun doesn’t suddenly change the way it shines. It’s just another day. But, in the way we construct our calendar, we tear out one page to reveal another. We take one calendar off the fridge and put another one up. While it is arbitrary and somewhat artificial, it’s also a powerful symbol of choices we can make at this time of year. 2017 will have had it’s triumphs and successes, along with it’s trials and difficulties. But the changing of the year gives us a moment to stop, reflect and reset. On New Year’s Eve each year, we do the following activity as a family: Each person takes a pen and paper and writes responses to the following questions: • What was my highpoint of the last year? • What was the lowpoint of the last year? • What are my goals for the coming year? • How would I like to improve as a person over the coming year? • What do I want to retain over the coming year? We put those responses in envelopes and open them on New Year’s Eve the following year. You may not do the same activity with your family but I encourage you, with the commencement of the year, to stop, reflect and reset. And it’s really helpful to undertake this task as a family because we receive insights about ourselves from others about the blindspots in our own lives. As the Bible says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17) I pray you have a wonderful 2018 – one of joy and grace. But even more than that, I pray we all find the disciplines in our family-lives to do the deeper work of relationships. Page 4 - January 2018 - The Lake News

Forest Lake Men’s Shed officially opened PHONE: 3278 8834
Shop 2, 255 Forest Lake Boulevard Grand Boulevard Shopping Centre
We are here X
We are located in Grand Boulevard Shopping Centre Local resident Steve Bruford’s dream of a local Men’s Shed was recognised with the official opening in December of The Forest Lake Mens Shed. In January 2015, local resident Steve Bruford placed an ‘expressions of interest for a local Men’s Shed’ article in the January edition of The Lake News, which attracted 20 local men indicating their interest. Just short of three years later, the Forest Lake Mens Shed was officially opened late last year and is set to hit the ground running in 2018. Instigated by Steve Bruford who saw the value and need in Forest Lake for a Mens Shed, the group have grown in numbers from the original 20 to 30 paid-up members in the three years since it was advertised to the local community. Members of the Men’s Shed have been involved in a range of projects including building a wool donation box for the Forest Lake Crochet group and flag poles for the Inala Lions Club and many small repair jobs for community members. The official opening in December last year was celebrated with local politicians Leeanne Enoch, Member for Algester; Milton Dick, Member for Oxley; and Councillor Charles Strunk and over 70 Shed and community members. Highlighted on the day were some of the Shed’s current projects - a Japanese harp stand, Connect 4 and tables for the Forest Lake Community Markets. Leeanne Enoch cut the ribbon and unveiled the plaque to commemorate the Shed’s opening. “We cannot thank our sponsors and supporters enough as we couldn’t survive without their support, said Steve, Forest Lake Men’s Shed President. “We have a sponsors board just inside the shed for all to see so our sponsors and supporters get the recognition they deserve. “The fact that the Shed is now fully operational took a team effort. Ian Wesche, Dan Baldwin, Bert Rowbotham and many others wanting this to become a reality, were a boundless supply of support and encouragement along the way. If you’re interested in knowing more about becoming involved with the Men’s Shed, please contact Steve by sending an email to fl_mensshed@yahoo.com or calling 0421 520 804.

In March 2018, more than 20,000 Aussies will to come together across the country to celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of the most loved fundraising events – the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Beginning in Lismore NSW in 1998, the World’s Greatest Shave was inspired by a daughter’s love for her dad going through leukaemia treatment. Twenty years on, more than 1.9 million extraordinary Aussies of all ages have helped beat blood cancer by getting sponsored to shave, colour, wax, cut pony tails, banish beards and trim top knots. The Leukaemia Foundation’s CEO, Bill Petch, is encouraging people who have been thinking about shaving for some time to make 2018 their year to sign up. “Whether you have a personal connection to blood cancer or simply want to have fun and raise money for a good cause, we’re asking Australians to join the World’s Greatest Shave for our big 20th anniversary,” said Mr Petch. “With your help we’re aiming to raise $16 million so more people survive their blood cancer.” Money raised will give families facing blood cancer including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma the free emotional and practical support they need as well as help fund vital research. For the first time, the World’s Greatest Shave is ‘going green’ in 2018 thanks to a partnership with Sustainable Salons Australia. This means ponytails snipped from those taking part in the event will now be turned into wigs for cancer patients, shorter hair clippings will be transformed into compost and floating booms to absorb oil spills at sea and empty cans of coloured hairspray will be diverted away from landfill back into recycled resources. This years World’s Greatest Shave will be held from 14 – 18 March. Sign up today and be part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s 20th anniversary World’s Greatest Shave and join thousands shaving or colouring their hair for a great cause. You’ll be taking a substantial step to help the 35 Australians diagnosed with a blood cancer every day, and that’s an amazing feeling. Simply download the World’s Greatest Shave app, sign up online at worldsgreatestshave.com or call 1800 500 088 for more information.

Threat of rain fails to dampen our Christmas spirit With the Lighthouse Events Centre full but not at capacity, over 1500 Forest Lake locals enjoyed all the entertainment of the annual Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Carols night last year. All the usual talent were there to help residents ring in the Christmas cheer and sing their hearts out. David Hamilton entertained young and old with his fabulous puppet show and the singing of Fortunato was a huge hit with locals. Santa wasn’t perturbed by the possibility of a rainy night and sang and danced on stage to the delight of all. If you’d like to be involved in the organising of this years Community Carol’s night, contact Katrina on 0419 766 164.
Kick start your new years resolution! Why not make good on one of those new years resolutions to get fit and active by joining the local walking group? The Heart Foundation Walking group at The Forest Lake Shopping Centre was started in 2007 by local resident Una Gray. With the assistance of the Heart Foundation and the Forest Lake Shopping Centre, the walking group was formed and soon became known as the Forest Lake Mob. “During the last 10 years, the number of registered walkers has increased and today we average about 40 walkers a walk,” said Les Brooks, the walk organiser for the last eight years. “In December, we celebrated our 10 year Anniversary breakfast at the Coffee Club and Una Gray was there to help us celebrate.” So if you want to get fit this year, join in a walk and meet a bunch of friendly people while you’re there. There is no charge to join or participate, so why not join The Forest Lake Mob on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday, meeting at Wendy’s and walking from 6.45am-8am. Visit heartfoundation.org.au/walking or phone Les on 3279 9449 or 0466 377 618 for more information.

Keep kids swim safe in the summer heat As summer temperatures soar across Queensland the Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC) is asking all of us to help keep children safe around water. Principal Commissioner Cheryl Vardon said, “Children under five are most at risk of drowning. Tragically, 60 children in this age group have drowned in swimming pools in Queensland in the past 12 years. Seventy- three percent of children under five, who drowned in this period, were aged one or two. More stringent pool fencing laws have certainly helped to reduce the number of backyard drownings but the key is remaining vigilant at all times.” The QFCC has produced a video on swimming safety which can be viewed at qfcc.qld.gov.au/keepkidssafe. The video focuses on safety for backyard pools but the actions and strategies are just as relevant when children are swimming in inflatable pools, dams, rivers or at the beach. “This short animation talks about key actions people should take to protect children when they are around water. Drowning in reality is very different from how it is portrayed on television. It is almost always quiet. The waving, splashing and calling out you think you’ll see is rare so you won’t immediately know when a child is in trouble. The most important thing we can do when children are in or around water is to actively supervise them.” Children should be with an adult at all times, don’t give the responsibility to an older child. Children should be within your arms reach and if the adult leaves the pool area make sure the children come with you. You need to be focused on the child all the time they are in or around the water, not on your phone or socialising. Other steps you need to take to keep children safe around water include: • Installing and maintaining a compliant pool fence • Making sure the pool gate’s self-closing and latching mechanisms are in good working order, gates are never left propped open and that there is nothing nearby that a child could use to climb the fence. • Teaching children water safety awareness and swimming survival skills • Having an emergency action plan which includes knowing how to administer CPR. Visit qfcc.qld.gov.au/keepkidssafe to find out who can help you with information on fencing, swimming classes and first aid training.

Become a Mater volunteer and make a difference locally
Mater Springfield volunteers from left Jan Stevenson, Jen Klar, Nadia Chen, Annabelle Morwood, Trudy Moss and Marion Bolt. With International Volunteer Day celebrated recently, Mater Private Hospital Springfield is encouraging others in the community to join the team and become one of their valued volunteers. Volunteers are valued members of the care team at Mater Private Hospital Springfield. Whether it’s offering companionship and support, a cup of tea or a book, escorting patients and their families to their destination or providing administrative support to staff, each volunteer role contributes directly to making sure patients and their families have an exceptional experience at Mater. Marion Bolt was part of the volunteer team at the opening of Mater Private Hospital Springfield in October 2015 and said she would encourage anyone in the local community to give it a go. “It’s a very rewarding thing to do with your time and I get a lot of satisfaction supporting the staff and nurses,” Marion said. Volunteers work across all areas of the hospital including Cancer Care, Day Surgery, Admissions, Theatre and the Wards. Volunteer Ward Assistant Trudy Moss said that knowing you have helped someone, even if it’s just saying hello is a personal reward. “Some patients in the hospital don’t have any visitors, so they really appreciate a visit from a volunteer,” Trudy said. “Volunteering has also been a great way for me to immerse myself in my new community and give something back.” Mater Private Hospital Springfield Staffing and Volunteer Manager Myra Iselin says the volunteers are a great support to the hospital. “The volunteers care about people and it shows in the way they offer compassionate support to our patients and their families,” Myra said. “We are all very grateful for the time they give.” Volunteers are asked for a minimum commitment of four months. Shifts are 3-4 hours, between 7am and 4pm Monday to Friday. All volunteers are required to be immunised, for which Mater covers the costs. You must also be 18 years or older to volunteer. Due to the clinical environment and mandatory safety requirements all volunteers must be able to work independently with limited supervision, read and comprehend safety signs and instructions and be independently physically mobile. Volunteers receive orientation training and on-the-job training as well as uniforms, free parking and a light meal. For further information please contact the Mater Volunteers Recruitment Coordinator (on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) by phoning 3163 5115 or sending an email to volunteerrecruitment@mater.org.au. Garden Group
by John Prout A Happy New Year to all the green and brown thumbs in the world of gardening. Although the wonderful season of Christmas has passed and we have treasured memories of our family gatherings, we are still in holiday mode with many families enjoying their annual holiday and trying to make sure our New Year resolutions last more than a couple of weeks. As we are still in the warmer months of the year, don’t forget to move pot plants into the shade, especially if you are going on holidays. What a great Christmas break-up party we had! The spit roast lunch pleased everyone’s taste buds and we rocked to the music from the Baby Boomer Party Band. Good to see several members up dancing to the music from the 50’s and 60’s. On Australia Day 26 January, why not plant a native tree? The range of lillypillies available is now so extensive along with the Bottlebrush and Grevillea varieties. Many are available in various sizes and make a great hedge, when trimmed, while some grevilleas will act as ground cover but more importantly they are popular with the local birds and other wildlife especially during flowering season. A couple of jobs to do in January is to pick out the growing tips on poinsettias as the plant will become bushier, which will mean more blooms in the coming winter. Also prune bougainvillea and other climbers that are threatening to take over the whole garden and don’t forget to gather your lawn clippings as it can be composted into wonderful plant food. Add some organic pellets to the heap to encourage microbial activity. With the summer storms, apart from filling our tanks, the rain will fill any pot saucers that may become waterlogged and cause rotting of potted plants as well as provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Empty these or remove them completely while the rain lasts. Don’t forget to check the garden for other receptacles that could harbour mozzies, too. Our first bus trip for the year will be to Madura Tea Plantation and a visit to Ross Evan Nursery on Thursday 12 April. A flyer will be available at next month’s meeting, so make sure you get yours. We are currently arranging the guest speakers for the year. In February, the guest speaker will be a representative from Rocky Point Mulching. Full details of the year’s guest speakers will be in the February edition of The Good Dirt. If you have a guest speaker or topic you would like discussed, please phone and let me know.
We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!
Next meeting Tuesday, 6 February at 10am. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

FROM THE DESK OF
Councillor Charles Strunk Forest Lake Ward Councillor
With the start of the new year, I sincerely hope that everyone had a wonderful break and is ready for 2018. Our community outdid itself over the festive season with so many wonderful events taking place even with challenging rain events. It was an honour to participate in all the local school graduations ceremonies in and around the Forest Lake Ward. This time of year is always very special as it signifies the beginning of a new journey for our graduating students. I also had the great pleasure in presenting certificates of appreciate to teachers in many of the schools in recognition of World Teachers Day. A special acknowledgement must go out to the Forest Lake Heart Foundation Walking Group, that celebrated their 10th year anniversary at Coffee Club at Forest Lake Shopping Village. It was wonderful to sit down with them over breakfast and thank them personally for their ongoing commitment to promoting the importance of keeping healthy. I would like to also congratulate Steve Bruford and his dream team for not giving up on having their very own men’s shed here in Forest Lake. They are a fantastic group and do some wonderful work helping others. I could never thank them enough for all the amazing work they did with the Buddy Benches, creating flag poles for the Inala Lions and making unique donation wool boxes for the Forest Crochet and Knitting group. These are only a few projects that have made a difference. So, please join me in thanking them and get in touch with the Forest Lake Men’s Shed if you can give them a helping hand at their next BBQ or join their activities. The month of December saw many homes in our area light up in celebration of the festive season with families who came together at local Christmas carols events. Thank you to the community groups that held wonderful markets and community carols all around Forest Lake! I would also especially like to thank the many residents who dropped off non-perishable food and toys to my Ward office for the Brisbane City Council Homeless Connect program to assist many families doing it tough. Every Christmas I have the pleasure of adopting a family and donating Christmas hampers. I would like to thank everyone who took part in this project that helped hundreds of families in making this time of special. We really can make a difference! I welcome residents to contact my Forest Lake Ward if you have a goal that we might help with or need any form of assistance on 3407 1211.

Wasps Monthly Update
FO
At our last meeting for 2017, a former Muslim lady came seeking help for refugees in West Africa. Her name is Mabel Saah and she and her family escaped the rebels storming the Liberian capital Monrovia in 1990. They demanded “Your car or your life”. Having no choice, she handed over the keys and immediately left her home together with her husband Dominic and her six children, never to return. The rebels seized Dominic and she never saw him again and it is presumed he was killed. Mabel eventually crossed into Sierra Leone where she worked with the UNHCR educating children. It wasn’t long before the rebels entered Sierra Leone. Mabel and her children fled to Guinea where she became a Christian which compelled her to help refugees and disadvantaged people in Guinea. However, strife still raged throughout West Africa and she sought refuge further afield and the UNHGR found her a place in Sydney in 2006 and later in Brisbane in 2009. Now Mabel wants to hand over another car but this time it is to her son Joseph who is voluntarily helping refugees in Guinea (which borders Liberia) who are facing the same predicament that his family faced when they fled their homeland. Mabel received a phone call from Joseph seeking material help for Guinea refugees. So she started sending supplies to the refugees. Mabel is currently preparing to send a container load to Guinea including her car, medical supplies and long life food. With the help of friends, fellow parishioners and others she has founded a charity to help raise money to fly to Guinea to meet the container on its arrival. Then she heard about the work that rotary does and came along to ask about membership and how we could help her. We certainly could through a Rotary Program called Donations in Kind which gathers unwanted items and equipment (such as hospital beds, school desks etc) packs them into containers and ships them to third world countries to augment their meagre utilities. She asked about what Forest Lake Rotary Club does and we told her, by way of example, about Ann George’s love and Care program where we provided 1400 new hair brushes to complement other personal care items in packages provided to needy children. We told her of other projects such as providing wool to a knitting group in Casino NSW. The wool comes back to Rotary as, for example, beanies for the elderly and/or bootees for newborn babies; each year we assist at citizenship ceremonies in providing management to those being inducted as new citizens (this year over 1400 new Aussies}; we assist with Rotary’s Youth programs such as sponsoring young people to attend Rotary Youth Leadership Programs and we also sponsor Peace Fellows such as a young university graduate from Brazil. How does our small Rotary Club fund these activities? Well you may have seen our portable BBQ trailer, funded by the Heritage Bank, at various venues selling steak sandwiches and sausages. These activities, manned by volunteers, raised more than $5,000 in 2017 and every dollar is given back to local communities. Would you like to be involved? Please call me, Alan Greig, on 3271 3358. I would be pleased to hear from you and have a chat over coffee.

The Wasps love January because it is the time that we can sniff rugby union’s return. Our returning families get back together for a BBQ and to talk all things season 2018. But most exciting...registrations are open January 15th! We are particularly on the look out for players to join us for: • Little Stingers – our fun U5s program • U6s – who have turned five or will turn six this calendar year • U10s – marking our return to Sunday teams • U11s Girls Touch 7s – or indeed any girls wanting to try rugby union (girls play in a mixed team until U12, but Touch teams are an option earlier). However, if you are in other age groups, we still have plenty of spots available for you to come and take part in the rugby action. Registrations are completely online, there are no paper sign ons. The link is available via our website www. forestlakewasps.com.au. Once you are through to Rugby Link, you can select the registration product for your age group. We do have an Early bird rate, sibling discount, payment plan and we accept the government Get Started vouchers. All fees include a training jersey, water bottle, sponsor vouchers, team photo, trophy and carnival participation fee. New players also receive a football and socks. Plus if you already play with us and bring a friend along to register for the season, you score a $10 Canteen voucher! We also have a $10 two week trial if potential players want to give it a go first. The website has all the details but if you have any problems please contact us or come down to our Come N Try Day on February 10th. There will be fairy floss, inflatables, a climbing wall, you can meet your coach, ask questions and try out drills and skills. Join us down the Forest Lake Sports Fields, 60 College Avenue for lots of fun in the sun. Page 18 - January 2018 - The Lake News

Monthly Update
by Les Brooks
On Wednesday December 6th, 104 members and guests of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club celebrated their Annual Christmas party at the Blue Fin Fishing Club, Inala in some style. The day kicked off with Fortunato singing many of our favourite songs while a generous three-course meal was served and heartily enjoyed by everyone. The meal was followed by the giving of Christmas gifts for everyone and then a huge raffle with over 70 wonderful prizes. Fortunato continued with his wide array of songs, getting everyone on their feet dancing and singing along to Tom Jones, Dean Martin, The Beatles and many other old favourites. At the end of the day our Members went home with a song in their heart (as well as some wonderful prizes and gifts). A big thank you goes to our President and her many helpers for organising yet another fabulous event for our members to finish off the year in good spirits. The Club wishes to thank Annastacia Palaszezuk MP, Milton Dick MP, Cr Charles Strunk, MTR Property Group, Forest Lake Shopping Centre Management, local businesses and some of our very special club members for their generous donations that helped make this day a huge success. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at The Lion, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next three meetings are 19th January, 9th February and 16th March (AGM) For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Leonie (President) on mob 0427 846 057 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update
by Alan Greig g
I was asked just what did our sub-branch achieve for the veteran community and the local community during 2017 and it’s a fair question. In short, there were visits to Veterans and John Sonderson arranged several popular visits to various museums and places of interest to more than 80 veterans. These visits included Maroochydore, Victoria Barracks, Gatton Truck Museum, Amberley Heritage Museum, Fort Lytton, Ipswich Railway Museum and the Army Intelligence Museum at Canungra. How did the sub-branch assist the community in our district? Aside from organising the Anzac Day Memorial Service and March, Remembrance Day and Vietnam Veterans Day, our sub-branch was involved in the management of the Spirit of Anzac Award for local school students. We were also represented at the Indigenous Veterans Ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance; representatives attended the RAF Bomber Command Memorial Ceremony at RAAF Amberley; members attended the Community Day at the Inala Durack Bowls Club; our Club was a sponsor to the Diggers Day in West Toowoomba; we also purchased replica rifles for Jimboomba District Army Cadet Unit. President Bob Richards supported Book Day at Grand Avenue School and we supported the dedication of the Animals in War Memoria by local community groups which was dedicated at Remembrance Day on November 11th 2017. This latter event was attended by several local community groups including the Rotary Club of Forest Lake. We supported 219 Squadron Archerfield Air Force Cadets and sponsored a Vietnam veterans day dinner at the Inala Durack Bowls Club. Our sub-branch has an objective of assisting veterans in need in many different ways. To do this, we raise funds by manning three badge sales outlets at Forest Lake and Inala Shopping Centres and outside Woolworths at Richlands for Anzac day and Remembrance Days. This involves about 45 veterans and supporters manning sales booths for more than 40 days. These funds have enabled us to examine the provision of training companion dogs for veterans suffering from several maladies including Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. For many years we have harboured the desire to have a Sub-branch office. Under the guidance of Secretary Steve Ford and his wife Sharron and the Inala Durack Bowls Club, this has now been achieved within the bowls club premises. Additionally an Honour Board has been erected and modern presentation facilities have now been installed. Forest Lake Sub-branch is one of the few Sub-branches who increased membership by more than 10% during 2017. This was due to the energetic recruiting program undertaken by Kevin Dinsdale. Our successes are assisted by the unfailing support of grants provided by Milton Dick, Federal Member for Oxley, BCC Councillor Charles Strunk, The Heritage Community Bank, The Department of Veterans Affairs and RSL Queensland, plus many community organisations and individuals. Thank you one and all. Page 20 - January 2018 - The Lake News
Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Welcome to 2018. Happy New Year one and all. We start off the year with our first meeting in February. Bring a friend and come along to next month’s meeting on Thursday 8 February at The Lion Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands, 9.30am sign in, 10am start. Put a reminder on your calendar. We will have a guest speaker. Join us for lunch at Lions afterwards. We are very happy to tell you that our trips and activities suit both singles and couples. February each year, by tradition, members and friends meet at a local restaurant. A large group are preparing to enjoy an ‘Asian Occasion’ on Saturday night 10 February at the Pheonix Restaurant. It’s a great way to catch up after the holiday break and a very popular first evening out on the 2018 Calendar. To our members who are unwell or recovering from surgery, our best wishes for a return to good health. Our condolences to those who have lost loved ones. Let’s hope there is not so much sickness this year. In December, our members enjoyed the Lord Mayor’s Seniors Christmas Party at the City Hall Auditorium. Joining in the carol singing was wonderful. The MC, Nadia Sunde, is so funny and so talented. We look forward each year to attending these concerts and are very grateful for the tickets from Cr. Charles Strunk. Our Christmas lunch was at Wolston Park Golf Club. There were fabulous raffle prizes, many donated by our very supportive politicians, Milton Dick MP, Leeanne Enoch MP and Cr Charles Strunk. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, donated very generously towards Christmas Celebrations for all members. Our entertainer was fantastic. This year Santa sent along his helpers and with lots of merriment they delivered little Christmas gifts to all our funloving members. There’s a variety of exciting away trips, day trips, special themed events, bbq’s, lunches, movie mornings, and lots more are on the Calendar for 2018. The February to July edition will be available at Branch meetings. We received a message of thanks from Ann George of Project Love and Care for the Christmas donations made by members which included clothes, toys and special little treats. They were so touched by the generosity of our community. A message of thanks for our donation was also received from St Hugh’s Anglican Church, Inala. Check out our Branch website www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au/ For further information about our Branch please contact Julie 3278 7274 or Peter 3372 9432.

Finance Corner
WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.
Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues
With 2017 behind us, no doubt some of you might be pondering those new year’s resolutions. If you are, perhaps a good look at your finances might be one of them. In the Johnson household, that may well be the most important one going into 2018, as 39 years of full time work is about to end in early February, albeit I have been winding down leave over the past several months rather than frequenting the office! All those decisions to be made...what to do with a tidy lump sum that has to last as long as possible? What expenses can be pared back a little? Do we plan some ‘bucket list’ trips overseas in the next few years before we won’t feel like long haul flying anymore? Can we give a little money to the kids to help them along their journey a little? Are there some small ways that we might be able to supplement out retirement income, so as to afford a few nice things occasionally now that the regular fortnightly bank deposit is rapidly about to become a thing of the past? And just as important, what are we going to do with all that time? Essentially retirement marks a complete swap in two important aspects of life. When you are working you have, hopefully, a reasonable amount of income but not necessarily enough time; in retirement, generally your income is at a lower level but one of the most important commodities of all, time, has increased immensely. We all know those wise words of ‘everything in balance’ - retirement certainly requires finances and activities to be finely balanced. Fortunately, there is a long list of activities and projects that I plan to do with that precious commodity of time on my side and I guess the operative word is ‘plan’. Plan your financial affairs at least a year or two in advance but just as importantly make that ‘bucket list’, or whatever you want to call it, as well. Indeed keep adding to it so the bucket does not become empty. Finally, for those who are vacillating as to when to mark that big day in the calendar, I can definitely say that retirement is to be recommended sooner rather than later!

Lumps and bumps are more common as your pet ages but young pets can get them too. It is recommended that you check your dog and cat’s body on a regular basis. This will allow you to become more familiar with your pet’s body and you will recognise any changes that occur. You can check your pet by running your fingers lightly through their coat, starting with the head, back, sides, down the legs, chest and the belly. If you feel something unusual, notice a new lump or notice that a lump has changed in size and shape, we recommend that you have it looked at. All lumps are potentially troublesome. Lumps can be malignant, benign, locally invasive, ulcerative, bleeding, itchy and infected. The following are some of the more common lumps. Fatty lumps. Lipomas are probably the most common lump found on dogs and are more common in obese pets. These are normally benign cancers that can grow quite slowly and rarely spread. In some cases, they may need to be removed when they infiltrate muscles or grow rapidly. Breast cancer - Mammary tumours. While some lumps in the mammary glands in female dogs can be quite harmless, others are amongst the most aggressive forms of cancer. In most cases, surgical removal of mammary lumps is advisable. Warts, Skin tags and Adenomas. These lumps are more common in older animals and look like crusty little bumps normally only small. They can be irritating and get infected and in some cases require removal. Sebaceous cysts. They are swellings filled with a creamy matter, often seen in older pets and often found in the middle of the back. Sometimes the swellings become quite red and painful and need removal. Mast cell tumours. Mast cell tumours are a type of skin cancer that can take on many different appearances. It is difficult to tell if and when they change from benign cancer to malignant cancer, so all mast cell tumours should be removed. Histiocytoma. Histiocytomas are red button like skin lumps usually found on young pets. They are unpredictable and can be malignant in older pets. Squamous cell carcinoma. These are more common on white thinly haired parts of the body. They are very malignant skin cancers and need removal. Melanomas. Like us, all black skin lumps should be investigated. They can be extremely malignant. There are many more other more uncommon lumps and a watchful eye is rewarded. Noticing changes in your pet’s health, including the appearance of lumps and bumps on their coat, can lead to early diagnosis and successful treatment.

Happy New Year and welcome back for 2018. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and found time to spend with family and friends. Throughout the previous year, the number one topic raised by locals was the rollout of the NBN. This has, and continues to be, a significant source of frustration for many residents, businesses and community groups who have been let down by the rollout. During July and August last year, over 500 local residents attended one of two NBN Crisis Meeting’s to have their concerns and troubles heard. Since that time, the Government has also announced the suspension of the Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) rollout for a period of six to nine months which will mean further delays for thousands of locals. Whilst there is no quick fix, I am committed to ensuring that any residents, businesses or community groups who encounter troubles with the NBN, have their matter resolved as soon as possible by NBN Co and their Retail Service Provider such as Telstra or Optus. If you are experiencing NBN issues, please contact my office. I’m also pleased to announce the first round of successful applications for the Stronger Communities Grant Program. Almost $150,000 worth of grants have been allocated to groups throughout the community towards projects such as building restoration, storage facilities and the installation of air conditioning for charities. Miraa House, St Vincent de Paul Inala and C&K Kindergarten were among those to be included in the first round of announcements with more to follow soon. Liza and Monica from St Vincent de Paul Inala Family Support Centre (pictured) will be using the grant funds to improve facilities at the centre and install much needed air conditioning to help locals who volunteer with preparing food hampers. As always, if there is anything I can assist with, please email me at Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov.au or call my office on 3879 6440. All the best for a happy and successful 2018.

Club Members wearing Heritage Bank Lions shirts at the new sign at the roundabout near the Forest Lake Shopping Centre. The Lions Club of Forest Lake marked 100 years of humanitarian work throughout 2017 by serving our community. We welcomed new members Penny Powell, Debbie Ferris-Reynolds, Aldona Jarrard and Maze Pape. Why don’t you consider becoming a member? Whether it’s helping on ANZAC Day or collecting eye glasses or visiting The Lodge on Mother’s Day, you become that friendly person who helps make a real difference in your community. Fundraising efforts commenced with an Australia Day barbecue at Bunnings’ Oxley. This was the first of many barbecues including the Forest Lake Community Markets. Keeping Forest Lake tidy has always been a priority. In 2017, members of the Lions and Leos participated in Clean Up Australia Day and the Adopt-a-Road Project. In March, we hosted the Lions Youth of the Year with Olivia Hutley from St Johns College winning her way to the Zone Finals. Olivia is currently enjoying a Lions Student Exchange in The Netherlands. Developing local youth through Leos in an important Club initiative. Past St John’s Leo President Ben Koszij is currently endeavouring to establish a community based Leo Club for 17 – 29-year olds. Many thanks to Forest Lake One Community (Heritage Bank) for their continued financial support. Their help contributed significantly to Forest Lake Lions Easter Festival and many operational costs of the club. Forest Lake Community House is also an invaluable support that includes providing financial assistance for our Mothers Day, Fathers Day and Christmas Day visits to the residents of Forest Lake Lodge. Each year the Club honours a very special group of local children through ‘Children of Courage’. In 2017, ten children and their families were recognised. In June, our new President April Lindel was installed. April thanked out-going President Jonathan Slack and all members who assisted the previous year. April’s theme for 2017-18 is supporting child initiatives. Her first action was to present a donation to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation. The Halloween Trivia Night raised funds over $2000 to help a local child to walk. All funds raised will help provide 11-year-old Jessie-Lee with a HartWalker. Before Christmas, Club members sold Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings. We were delighted to donate a carton of Christmas Cakes to the Drought Angels Farmers Christmas Appeal. Let us know of any local needs that we could support. Send us a message via our website: www.forestlakelions.org.

ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N
E
Opportunities! I started my training as a Leader in Scouting in 1993 when my eldest was still very young. Over the past 25 years there have been a lot of changes within the Scout Association, including our uniform, our training and parts of our award scheme. One thing that has not changed is the opportunities open to our members - young and old. For instance, did you know that Scouts Australia is a registered training organisation and completion of our leader training can lead to nationally recognised VET certificates? Our youth members also have access to Scouts outstanding e-learning and qualified instructors to train them in a range of outdoor adventurous activities including water activities, air activities, abseiling, rock climbing, archery and many more. In fact, our youth members from the age of 15 can actually train to become outdoor activity guides. Our Venturer Scout section award scheme can earn our young members a Certificate II in Business upon completion of the Venturer Award, which also earns them points toward their Queensland Certificate of Education. Those who are dedicated enough to complete their Queens Scout Award are then recognised by receiving the opportunity for direct access to enrolment in a number of universities throughout Australia, with more accepting the skills and knowledge gained through Scouts training every other day. Lucas McLaughlin, one of our own dedicated and hardworking Venturers, has recently been awarded his Queens Scout Award. We are very proud and excited as this is the first Queens Scout Award earned in our group. We look forward to following Lucas as he continues his Scouting journey in to our Rover Scout section. Rovers motto is ‘Service’ and they have access to even more opportunities. Other opportunities open to our youth members (and Leaders) is the opportunity to travel and attend major events. Right now, Venturers from all over Australia, and the world, are gathering together to enjoy 10 nights of amazing activities and fellowship at the 17th Australian Venture in Maryborough. They are doing everything from rock climbing, canyoning and sailing to beach bumming, baking and building. Not just having fun, they are also actively completing sections of their award scheme, and in some cases will come away from Venture with Cert 1 in Outdoor Adventurous Activities. What a way to learn! During 2018, Richlands-Forest Lake Scout Group members will be actively fundraising for more major events, such as the 2018 Cuboree in September, and the 25th Australian Scout Jamboree (AJ2019) to be held in South Australia next January. There are many more exciting changes coming to Scouts Qld, thanks to an extensive Youth Program Review, which included input and recommendations from not only Leaders past and present, but also from youth members. Who better to determine the direction of Scouting than those who are going to benefit from Scouting the most? One of these changes is the lowering of the joining age for our youngest section. Until now, young people could not join Scouting until their 6th birthday. On November 19 2017, the National council voted to lower the joining age to include youth members who are not yet six but who are in Year 1 at school. The Leaders and Supporters of Richlands-Forest Lake have had a great holiday break and are looking forward to starting back on February 6 for another exciting and fun filled year. Why not come along and join us and take advantage of all the amazing opportunities Scouting has to offer? Call Rosella on 0402 308 182 or check out our facebook page Richlands-Forest Lake Scout Group. Stay calm and join Scouts!
South West Brisbane Stamp Club Update Are you a stamp collector - Why not join us in 2018?
by Marius, South West Brisbane Stamp Club
It has been an exciting year for the South West Brisbane Stamp Club. Having only formed nine months ago, we have received invitations to attend Ipswich, Toowoomba and Nanango stamp fairs with our exchange books. For those who are new to collecting, all clubs have exchange books where members can place their stamps for sale and these books are perused by other members or taken to other club fairs where purchases can be made from the books. The club takes a small commission for this and the member gets the proceeds of the sale. As mostly inexpensive stamps are placed in these books, it is a great way to fill the holes in your collection without having to spend much money. So far, we have about 12 books in circulation containing thousands of stamps and all members are encouraged to participate. We are always looking to increase membership and encourage anyone who is looking for a new and engrossing hobby to come along. Mentorship for old and young is available. Find our meeting information and contact details under the Hobbies, Arts and Crafts section on page 29 of this issue of The Lake News. The Lake News - January 2018 - Page 27
