‘Life balance’ has become a buzz phrase in recent times.

Whereas the 70’s and 80’s may have been typified by an exaggerated emphasis on work and money, the 90’s depression reminded us that money can’t be the ‘main thing’. For those of us Gen-X’s, it seems the generation of the ‘Noughties’ don’t put enough emphasis on work. So, we are left with asking the question, “What is this elusive life balance?”

Some years ago, I started getting serious about losing some weight and getting fit. We have some great personal trainers in our church and they gave me some guidelines on how I can get in shape. However, after hearing what needs to be done (especially the exercise), my first thought was “I don’t have time for this!”

The irony is that if I don’t make personal health and fitness a priority, the other things in my life will become much harder to do. Life balance will be out. For example, if I don’t manage my health, my capacity to do the work I love will be diminished – I won’t have the energy I need nor the longevity.

The deeper issue to all of this is that we tend to pass on our lack of balance to the next generation – they either take it on themselves or they react by going too far the other way. So, where we might have parents who spent too much time at work, we might also become workaholics or we might become lazy and not work hard enough. We need to be aware of our own motivations.

Life balance is not a modern issue invented in the 21st Century. The Bible reminds us that getting our lives in balance is important. Indeed, the whole book of Ecclesiastes is about the importance of finding balance and the futility of working so hard that we get out of balance - “What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labour under the sun?...All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless. A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?” (Ecclesiastes 2:22, 24-25) There are some simple steps we can take to make our health a priority and bring some balance to our lives: 1. Look at our weekly calendar and see how we actually spend our time – not how we think we spend our time. You may be surprised where you’re investing your life; 2. Ask our families what they think. Those close to us often see those things that are in our blind spots.

3. Write down those things that are most important to you – your most significant goals. Does your schedule reflect your goals?

Life balance isn’t always easy to find. Many people go through life without finding it. But, it’s worth trying because we leave a legacy for the next generation.

During a recent family gathering I threw into the conversation that I needed some topics for this column.

I won’t bore you with the list of what was thrown back, suffice to say that the range was from the inspiring to the downright idiotic and everything in between. One suggestion, that I didn’t immediately entertain was sport (you know who you are!).

As the banter continued around me, I began to think about the topic of sport, especially in light of ‘State of Origin’ as we now look forward to a nice relaxing third game, secure in the knowledge of another series won by the right team (can you guess who I go for??). As I’m not particularly sporty - give me the theatre over a sporting event any day of the week - I started to wonder about the appeal of sport, particularly as a spectator.

As I said, I’m not very sporty, but for some reason, I do like to watch the Origin in particular, and will stay up late on too many consecutive weekday nights watching the tennis.

And, my family will tell you, I’m not above yelling at the TV and fist pumping the air when watching Queensland do what we do best. But why? Why do we want our team to win? Why do we care?

Many a great brain with far more intellect than mine have pondered this question, so I know I’m not breaking new ground here but I do think it has much to do with ‘belonging’. A sense of belonging and connection are perhaps our greatest needs, rivalling, in my opinion, even basic physical needs.

Feeling we are part of something bigger than ourselves does quite a few things to us. We feel a sense of kinship, of commonality. And in our world that is constantly banging on about how individual we are (and we are!), it’s also strangely comforting to know we are similar to others and not that different after all. We also feel a sense of vicarious achievement. Them becomes us and we, rather than I. Basically, we get a kick out of feeling an affinity with a ‘win’. It can show us that nothing is impossible, especially when the underdog gets up and wins against all odds. It can make us feel proud. We like feeling that people who are ‘one of us’ eg Queenslanders, have succeeded. And in a society that struggles to acknowledge another’s success, it feels good and right to be proud of someone else’s triumph.

History tells us that the concept of competitive games has been around since we first began. Such a long and enduring idea must carry benefits to have stood the test of time through the ages. And I think it’s because we are meant for community.

We are born to be part of something outside ourselves.

This is not a plug for all those sporting groups out there, unless, of course, sports is your thing, but rather it’s a plug for joining something - anything! There are many fantastic groups, clubs, churches in our local area with a wide range of interests represented.

We all need to feel connected and by joining a group, you just might help others feel connected and that they belong too.

Forest Lake Lions Club update

by Kim Grierson On Sunday 22 May we held our annual Walk with the Lions event. This year we raised funds for Redkite (helping children and young adults with cancer) and the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

While the day started off a bit cloudy, by 8.30 the sun was shining and we were off walking. We were joined by the Forest Lake Dragon Boat Club ‘The Lakers’ who did some impressive paddling around the lake while the rest of us walked and talked. We had approximately 110 walkers and rowers. To accompany the rowers and walkers, around 25 members of the Brisbane Ukulele Musicians Society (BUMS) played some awesome tunes. Thanks BUMS!!

The morning was a great success and we could not have done it without the Club members, walkers, rowers, ukulele players, the Forest Lake community and our sponsors and generous members of the Forest Lake business community without whose financial support we would not have been able to run this event.

by Dr Paul Holliday Why do I need x-rays?

Your dentist takes x-rays of your teeth and gums because they help to discover and diagnose any problems you may have. Many problems in the mouth can’t be seen by the eye. A digital image or an x-ray film will assist them.

The majority of dentists in Australia use film to take their x-rays, but the popularity of digital imaging is increasing. Digital systems offer some excellent advantages, such as greatly reduced radiation exposure; faster processing; images that can be manipulated and stored on your dentist’s computer; there are also environmental benefits because chemical film processing and disposal has been eliminated.

The need for an x-ray depends on such factors as: how susceptible you are to decay; whether there are other problems in the mouth; whether the position of the teeth needs to be altered; and for planning restorative treatment. From childhood to adolescence, generally about six x-rays are needed. Adults need x-rays at least every two years to check for decay and gum disease. You should not be concerned about radiation from x-rays because your dentist follows very strict guidelines to ensure your safety.

There are three main types of x-rays: bitewing, periapical and panoramic. Bitewings shows the upper and lower teeth. Periapical shows the whole tooth including the root and surrounding tissues. Panoramic shows the teeth and jaws. There are a number of situations where the use of x-rays may be necessary for correct diagnosis and proper treatment. They include: Decay: An x-ray may be the best way of finding decay between teeth, or under old or leaking fillings or crowns.

Gum disease: An x-ray allows your dentist to assess the extent of damage to the bone caused by periodontal disease.

Wisdom teeth: An x-ray of a wisdom tooth allows your dentist to assess the area for possible sources of trouble in the removal procedure.

Root canal treatment: Problems associated with the nerves of teeth may be difficult to assess without x-rays.

Accidents: An x-ray by your dentist can determine the extent of damage caused by injuries to teeth and jaws.

Orthodontics: An x-ray by your dentist shows the position of the teeth before treatment; and helps determine where their proper position should be.

TMJ/Occlusion Dysfunction: An x-ray shows the position and anatomy of the jaw joints and whether there is any problem associated with the TMJ. Don’t be scared of x-rays, they show how good your teeth and gums are on the inside. Lakedental uses the latest digital x-ray system for your safety.

Forest Lake youngster, Harry Taylor blitzed the field in the U16 Single Scull race final at a recent rowing regatta held on the new Wyaralong Rowing Course situated on Beaudesert/Boonah Road.

Former Olympian Bruce Richardson who was coaching Taylor on the day said that with the way the Grade 10 student had grown, and was approaching 6ft tall, he had a very bright future in rowing.

The win by Harry Taylor last month showed the Centenary Rowing Club was well on the way to improving its position in Queensland rowing.

Taylor is already looking ahead to his future and has an ‘after school’ plan well in place. “I want to be able to continue with rowing after obtaining a high OP score in 2018, which incidentally, will be the last time a student will be able to obtain an OP as the grading system will change in 2019. “When I leave school I would like to obtain a Degree in Psychology and if I can gain a place at either Queensland University or the Queensland University of Technology, it will mean I can continue to row at the Centenary Rowing Club. “My interest in psychology centres on people suffering from addictions to things such as drugs, alcohol and gambling. I believe I have an above average capacity communicating with all kinds of people and I think I would be good helping family members who may have been impacted by others around them,� Taylor said.

Harry Taylor’s other love is cross training for rowing and he does this by Mountain Bike riding as often as he can with his elder brother Hamish. “Every time I ride with Hamish, he pushes me to ride harder and harder and always reminds me of my goal that I have written on a small card stuck to my bedside lamp near the switch which says ‘Olympic Games 2028’. “That is my rowing goal!�

Some readers may have heard of the Little Free Library initiative that began in 2009 by American Todd Bol of Wisconsin. A tribute to his school teacher mother, the idea of a little wooden box stand on the streets with the concept of ‘take a book, leave a book’ began to catch on.

Now this worldwide phenomenon has reached Forest Lake with two such Little Free Libraries in operation locally.

For Forest Lake’s first Little Free Library installer, Claire Miller, the library is the realisation of a dream to share books and the love of reading with others.

“Our Little Free Library, Charter Number 29173, was built by my husband Peter, with another one in the pipeline - based on the Harry Potter Knight Bus!” said Claire.

“To see the happiness and excitement that both children and adults have when they find a book they love is beyond rewarding. I love the way books have the ability to open the readers minds to different worlds and experiences and am so excited to be able to offer this experience to our community.

“The library is not just to encourage readers but it is giving neighbours an opportunity to get to know each other.”

Little Free Library number 29173 is located at 73 Jubilee Avenue. All residents are welcome to make use of the library and ‘take a book, leave a book, keep a book, donate a book’.

A second Little Free Library will be operational mid July and is located on the corner of Centennial Way and Maidenhair Court.

Inspired by Claire Miller’s instigation of a Little Free Library and her close proximity to a local primary school, Dianne Haire is looking forward to residents using the library.

“Children’s reading has always been important to me,” said Dianne. “I believe that if you start young and have a love of reading, it can help children in other areas of their schooling.

“All are welcome and there will be a range of books to suit all ages. There are no set up requirements or forms to fill out but if you like, leave a quick note in the visitors book.”

Dianne has also added a personal touch and created some bookmarks for people to take and use with the books.

The Lakers Dragon Boat Club was established in 2006 and enjoys a membership of over 40 people of all ages (13 and over) and fitness levels. The oldest Laker at present is 79 years young!

Amazing community support for young Samuel Many residents would be aware of the plight of Grand Avenue State School (GASS) Deputy Principal Craig Thorneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Samuel. Ten year old Samuel contracted Transverse Myelitis late last year, going into hospital on Sunday 29 November and has not returned home, with dad Craig taking leave from his position at the school to concentrate on Samuel.

The prognosis for Samuel is dire but with the help of many, the Forest Lake community included, the family are hoping to bring Samuel home in time for Christmas.

As a result of the neurological disorder, Samuel is now quadraparesic (quadraplegic with sensation) with only functional use of his right foot and toes, his torso and arms are paralysed including his diaphragm, necessitating the need for a ventilator in order to breathe, inability to swallow, and an inability to speak due to the tracheostomy tube.

Samuelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personality and intellect are completely unaffected by the condition and he is fully aware of what is happening to him. His parents and sister report that his quick wit and sense of humour are still fully functioning! It will cost approximately $350,000 for the Thorne family to modify their home to accommodate Samuel, and to purchase a modified vehicle and other therapeutic and communication devices.

When GASS Admin Officer, Luciana Kleineberg and long time friend Lee Berndt heard about the cost of the modifications and equipment required, they had the idea to hold a fundraising Zumba session. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lee and I have been friends since our kids started Prep eight years ago at Grand Avenue,â&#x20AC;? said Luciana. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lee is a Zumba instructor and holds a lesson for the teachers at the school on a Monday afternoon, so she organised the other instructors to join the event. Special thanks to the Zumba instructors Sandra Regano, Kylie Buck, Fitu Papu, Mal Malzak Zaki, Mar-li Rowswell, Paulini Naucukidi, Sarah Griffiths, Veronica Cosier. My wonderful helpers Sabrina Mejia, Lisa Fergusan, Leizl Seeto and Sue Booth and all the other amazing people who helped make the night such a success. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Never in a million years did we imagine we would raise as much money as we did. The community support has been amazing.

With the GASS Auditorium at capacity, 170 participants came and worked out wearing Samuelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourite colour, blue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also held a raffle on the night which really helped our end total. All prizes were donated by local business - McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Forest Lake (Karen Robinson) who donated a beautiful hamper, Zambreros Heathwood, Burito Bar, Vermillion Massage, La Bella Beauty, Snap Fitness,Nutimetics and Zoeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Brownies. Coles and Woolworths donated water to sell on the night. We raised $3600 and given itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success, we would love to hold another fundraising event for the family. GASS are planning on holding a stall for Samuel at the upcoming Ekka Fun Day in August.â&#x20AC;?

Recently our Primary school was filled with absolute joy during our annual Grandparents Day. It was wonderful to see the smiles on the faces of our students and their visiting grandparents and to hear their conversations. Grandparents were amazed by the classroom activities St John’s students are engaged in. From writing code for webpages to learning Chinese, participating in PYP units of inquiry, hands-on Maths activities and reading using QR codes.

Our grandparents were astounded at how much school has changed.

It is an essential element of St John’s that family and extended family are included as part of the St John’s community. Children gain so many benefits from opportunities to perform, speak in front of an audi-ence, explain their learning and ‘teach’ others. These experiences cement their understanding of knowledge and give them confidence to showcase their skills and ideas.

For example, learning how to write code for a webpage takes a new way of thinking with some likening it to learning another language. When a student is learning code they have a far greater chance of remem-bering the steps and the code if they teach someone else how to do it.

The majority of our visiting grand-parents are unlikely to remember the coding they witnessed on Grandparents Day, but for the students who demonstrated and explained coding, their understanding and memory of the steps will have been strengthened significantly.

Another way in which students can strengthen their learning is through talking to their parents about the PYP units of inquiry they have been studying. At St John’s we encourage our students to reflect on their learning and talking with others is great way to reflect.

What an amazing Probian Edward (Ted) Schofield (above right) is who is to be awarded the French Legion de Mare for being involved in World II, the D-Day Landings.

Born in 1924, in Sheffield England, Ted joined the Royal Navy. In 1948 he migrated to Australia and later attended the University of Adelaide where he graduated and became a Social Worker. From Hervey Bay he moved to Forest Lake where he has been a resident for a decade. Congratulations to this young at heart, active, spritely nonagenarian for his award.

The Probus five minute speaker was Club Secretary Barbara G. Born in Julia Creek as one of identical twins, she was educated at Emerald Catholic School where she was Dux. Upon leaving school, she joined the Public Service, Department of Primary Industry. She and her twin sister worked in the same building and played tricks on people by swapping names/identities. She later joined a Bachelor Club where Barbara met her future husband David. After their marriage, they bought a van and toured Europe and the British Isles for four and a half months. Upon their return they sold their van outside Australia House for a profit. They moved around a bit and adopted a girl and a boy. At the age of 51, Barb contracted breast cancer but is in remission. They retired to the Gold Coast and recently moved to Forest Lake to be near their children. Thank you Barbara for such a deep insight into a remarkable life.

The Probus Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s monthly speaker was Saravanan Poondi (Sanju), Career Counsellor with Milcom. With a fine sense of humour and an animated talk, he gave us a brief venture into his life in India. He was the first male born into his family and he spent a lot of his childhood with his grandfather who was Chief of Police and Customs.

His life was very organised and he played cricket for his school. When he was a teenager, his parents moved to Chenai where he joined the wrong crowd and was sent off Bangalore, in another state. Tamils often attacked so he returned to Chenai where his mother sent him to meditation which became an important influence on his life. Upon graduating from school, he enrolled for a degree is Hospitality at the local college and joined the Rotoact Club (Rotary for Youth). At 22 he accepted a marriage proposal and his wife planned their future. He spent time in Singapore, back to India and eventually to Australia.

Throughout his delivery, Sanju gave us a brief history of India and its architecture. The story of Abraham Lincoln became and is his inspiration...never to give up and not to carry unnecessary baggage. It was a lively and interesting talk. Trish passed the vote of thanks.

A little extra kindness goe When locals David and Rae Taylor stopped on their usual walk around the lake with their dogs to meet and talk to a stranger and then offer him a coffee, they had no idea the impact it would make.

That stranger was Geremy. After coming to Australia from New Zealand in 2012 to be with his partner and small child, Geremy fell on hard times when the relationship broke down and he sustained an injury which left him unable to work.

Not being an Australian citizen meant that Geremy did not qualify for government support, which in turn saw him become homeless on the streets of inner city Brisbane, with no money or current passport to go back to New Zealand.

When the accommodation that brought Friends gathered together to farewell Geremy at Simple Bliss in Forest Lake. him to Forest Lake this year did not work out, he once again found himself alone and on the streets. Having overcome drug addiction, battled illness and grieved for friends who passed away, Geremy welcomed the small gesture of kindness of a hot coffee that day.

Rae and David continued to bring Geremy a coffee after their walk before inviting him to the coffee shop. From that day on, they drove him to appointments, took him on day trips and made sure he was fed and clean. Astrid from Simple Bliss at the lake, offered him the shelter and warmth of not only friendship but her veranda and hot coffee.

“Geremy is so much more than the homeless label,” said Rae. “Like all homeless people, he’s human with hopes and dreams, a past and a future. He enjoys music and poetry and loves his little boy. He needed someone to believe in him and show some kindness and a path to a better life.”

es a long way Geremy’s situation was posted on the Forest Lake Community page and soon locals were doing whatever they could to help make him more comfortable.

“He was brought regular meals, sometimes several of them on the same night. He joked about putting on weight.

He had a homeless sleeping bag, warm socks, a watch, a shower once a day and a beautiful view, some noisy birds and something else, friendship from the extended lake family who really cared. He appreciated these things immensely.”

It was decided a fundraiser was needed to get Geremy back to New Zealand. A donation tin was placed at Astrid’s coffee shop and The Salvation Army accepted donations on his behalf and were able to help with arrangements. Malouf Chemist donated a large prize for a raffle. Fundraiser parties were held, local businesses and residents dug deep and over $1300 was raised. A ticket was bought along with four weeks accommodation in New Zealand and things began to fall into place.

On 19 June a farewell morning was held at Astrid’s Simple Bliss, with an open invitation to the community. It was evident that everyone had become very fond of Geremy.

“He was in awe that people cared so much and that they shed tears while saying their goodbyes and had to be reminded that he had become a special part of our community.

“Later that afternoon, in torrential rain, a few of his closest lake family members took him to the airport. This wasn’t without it’s issues but eventually we watched in the rain as his plane took off. There were tears but also a sense that he was now armed with the right tools and support to begin a brand new chapter in his life.”

Subsequent contact with Geremy revealed the exciting news that he may have a job to go to and is continuing contact with his son, who he reconnected with during his last few weeks in Australia.

On the way to the airport he was asked what he would like to say to the community, so in his own words - “The precious time in life is love. We are born with pure love and it’s unconditional. Only love comes from loving and I love you all.”

Our June excursion had 50 members of The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club visit The Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology at Caboolture.

We set off with the weather cool and overcast, however, on arrival we were served a very enjoyable morning tea, which brightened up the day for everyone. We then we made our way over to the Abbey Church with our guide for a talk and tour of the medieval, Edwardian and Victorian Stained Glass. This was followed by a journey through the history of mankind at The Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, which all members found extremely interesting, and is highly recommended for anyone to see.

With the tour over it was time to make our way over to The Bribie Island Hotel for a great lunch. The talk around the tables indicated everyone really enjoyed The Abbey with its wonderful displays and informative talks.

This month, the Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Extra Activityâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC; was held at the Hotel Monier on June 8th for lunch and members get together. There were 45 members attending and as usual there was lots of good humour and in particular, talk about our upcoming train trip to Longreach in September, which everyone is really looking forward to.

The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Last month, the Palaszcuk Government handed down its second budget. So what does it mean for the Forest Lake community?

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s start with cheaper transport fares, additional support for small business, funding for education, child safety and disability services in the Algester electorate. Under the new public transport Fairer Fares Package, local public transport users will enjoy a reduced number of travel zones and cheaper fares, saving between four and 34 percent. A commuter travelling from Forest Lake shopping centre into the city, five days a week, could save almost $900 per year. Local travel will also be reduced for people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t travel far. A commuter travelling from Heathwood to Forest Lake shopping centre could save almost $65 per year.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also introducing the Office of Small Business to provide additional support for small businesses â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including helping them to engage with the digital economy. There are 3165 small businesses operating in the Algester electorate and this additional support will help them to expand their businesses and potentially reach international markets.

The budget also announced $300,000 in funding for Grand Avenue State School to refurbish three existing Special Education Program Learning Space areas. Investing in local education infrastructure will deliver benefits into the future for the community.

As we move towards the knowledge-based economy of the future, it is vital that we provide our children with the best possible learning environment. To prepare the next generation for the jobs of the future we have to equip them with the tools to make the most of the opportunities the new economy will present.

It was also announced that $124,000 be allocated to support young people and the community, including funding for the Salvation Army at Forest Lake. This is on top of more funding for education, child safety and disability services for our community. I will keep fighting for the Algester electorate to ensure we get our fair share.

Cr. Charles Strunk Forest Lake Ward Councillor

The Brisbane City Council Budget was presented on Wednesday 15 June. I’m pleased to announce that there is a number of funding requests that I made that have been successful. Forest Lake residents will be pleased that our lake precinct is receiving funding for upgrading and new equipment. I will now undertake a consultation process with interested residents to identify and prioritise projects within the lake precinct with the money allocated. This will be the start of the restoration of our lake and surrounds.

This month I took part in and held a mobile office at the HAKKA Multicultural Dragon Boat Festival 2016.

Congratulations to the HAKKA President Frank Wu and his committee for their hard work in bringing this great event to Forest Lake and everyone who made time to visit my stall and give feedback. We were also joined by Brisbane City Council Litter Prevention Team who will be working with groups and individuals on rolling out a new litter prevention program.

I also want to mention and say thank you to Lisa and the stall holders at the Markets on Grand for coming together for another successful market day at Grand Avenue State School. It was great to be joined by my friends Milton Dick Federal Labor Candidate for Oxley and Leeanne Enoch MP for Algester to address the State and Federal issues.

As Councillor for Forest Lake, I wanted to highlight the good work our local champions have done this month by way of helping a good man by the name of Geremy. Unfortunately, Geremy found himself in a difficult situation. The residents, community groups and businesses rallied together and have gone beyond and above by raising much needed funds to help him. I can report that everyone’s hard work has paid off and he has flown back home safe and sound. This goes to show great things can happen when we work together. I wish Geremy all the best in the future.

The College Avenue ‘Off-Leash Dog Park’ was re-opened late last month. Your voices were heard by Council and I would like to thank you for your patience while I worked to reopen our much loved and used park. During my recent election campaign, I was contacted by multiple community groups and residents who were also unhappy about the closure of this park.

It became clear to me that over the past 20 years this park had become more than a place to exercise dogs , it had become a social hub where residents could meet and discuss the events of the day. I am delighted to say that it is now reopened for the enjoyment of local residents and their dogs.

We welcome ladies and gentlemen living in our great community to come and join us. See if our group appeals to you. There are many, many benefits of membership with National Seniors and the yearly membership fee is very affordable. National Seniors website is a great source of helpful information.

Meeting date is Wednesday 13 July. Meeting Place - Lions Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands, on the second Wednesday of the month, 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Meeting entry includes morning tea.

We have a guest speaker booked and it’s a dress up day (French theme) if you like a bit of fun. Many of us stay on after the meeting for lunch at Lions. To our members who are unwell, we extend our very best wishes Members in an underground opal mine at Lightning for a return to good health.

A big group of members recently went on a great trip out to St George and Lightning Ridge. The sights we saw were pretty amazing. A good time was had by all and many people purchased one or two of the beautiful opals. It was great to catch up with some special friends at St George.

At our June meeting, we were fortunate enough to have Everald Compton AM speak. Everald was Founding Director of National Seniors Australia and served as its Chairman for 25 years. He has written a book about John Flynn ‘The Man on the $20 note’. He talked about John Flynn and the way Australia needs to revive his visions by using the skills and experience of Senior Australians. Everald’s words of encouragement were very inspirational. We have a few signed copies of the book if anyone is interested in purchasing one.

In June, a small group of enthusiastic members took a trip by train to Australia Zoo. What a fantastic experience. So easy by train. Loved seeing the beautiful birds and, of course, the cuddly koalas.

Coming up this month is Christmas in July lunch down Cleveland way. We have a big group coming along, all looking forward to a wonderful time together. The cold weather has not slowed down the enthusiasm of the youth members in Richlands Scout Group. Our Joey Scouts have been out and about mixing with Mobs from within our District and making new friends.

Sadly, our Cub Scout Camp set for early June had to be postponed, so we took the opportunity to add in an extra ‘fun’ day. We are looking forward to getting to our bush survival camp during Term 3, and are also planning a Disco night and campfire night for our younger sections. Both Joey and Cub sections are heading to the Schonell Theatre at St Lucia to catch the Brisbane Gang Show production of ‘Shipwrecked’ - an amazing production involving over 140 youth members from Scout Groups in and around Brisbane and Ipswich. Tickets are still available by heading to the Brisbane Gang Show web page.

Our Scout Section are preparing for their four day major camp, SSS in early July as well as planning ahead to Term 3 with trips to RSPCA and Inflatable World being investigated. A quiet patrol camp, hiking weekends, a ‘Master Scout’ cooking night and a water activities weekend are other activities to look forward to.

Our numbers are growing steadily, and our Group has been enjoying building partnerships within the community, particularly with schools such as Grand Avenue and Pallara and also with the Inala Youth Service and Bunnings Oxley. This term we are also going to be turning our thoughts to Spring and all things environmental. Starting with our ‘Living Fundraiser’, where we will be selling herb tins, fruit and vegetable pods and maybe even flowers. We are hoping to join forces again with our friends at the Inala Bushcare Group to actively encourage our youth members to follow the Scout Law ‘A Scout cares for the Environment’.

After such a busy term, we will all be heading off for a nice relaxing Group Family Camp later in the term. We always have room for more, and we don’t have an end of season, so if you are looking for something to keep the kids busy, come along for a visit or three. News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling The Forest Lake Social Golf Club had another good turnout with 23 players attending the Hills International, Jimboomba game on 12 June. Our group teed off on time from the first in mild conditions – unlike last year where the course was shrouded in thick fog! Despite recent rain, the course played long with plenty of run on the ball. While the fairways were fairly dry, the greens were mostly in good condition, however, pin placements did make putting a challenge due to the speed of the greens.

The Hills Course is a very long course at the best of times, and with some slow groups in front of us that didn’t help the speed of play. Our lead out group all walked the course, and even they found themselves waiting for the people in front of them!

The Club’s fund raising for the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Foundation’s Perinatal Research Centre was again well supported. Earlier in the month, our club proudly presented a donation of $1,000 to the University of Queensland’s Perinatal Research Clinic based at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, from funds raised during the Clubs 2015 game calendar.

Dogs and cats age approximately seven years to our one year and are generally considered ‘senior pets’ from seven years of age. Because they age so rapidly their risk of developing disease or illness increases and can progress quite quickly. The signs of ageing can be subtle in our pets, especially our feline friends. You may notice the outward signs such as greying around the face, less energy and sleeping more, trouble toileting, difficulty rising or walking, reluctance to jump from heights, or drinking or eating more or less.

The more worrying signs are the hidden or internal changes we can’t see without a comprehensive examination and diagnostic testing performed by your veterinarian. The key to a long and healthy life is early detection of these hidden problems. Our senior pets are more susceptible to a number of health conditions including, dental disease, diabetes, kidney and liver disease, heart disease, arthritis and cancer. Having your pet checked twice a year will help detect and manage such diseases, allowing your pet to live the healthiest and longest life possible.

A senior health check should include a thorough examination of your pet’s joints, eyes, ears, teeth, skin, coat, and respiratory system and also an assessment of their dietary requirements. Often a sample of your pet’s urine and blood is taken for diagnostic testing, to help determine any underlying or early signs of health issues that are not visible to the naked eye. Diagnostic testing can identify changes in your pet’s body that may require close monitoring or early treatment.

Because of advances in veterinary medicine in recent years, many previously unmanageable geriatric conditions can now be treated so that your pets continue to enjoy their senior years with you.

It was a pleasure to support the South West Progress Association’s Queensland Day Volunteer Awards.

These annual awards honour local heroes for their incredible volunteering efforts and community participation. This is the 10th year of the awards and it is wonderful to see celebrations grow each year and showcase more of the volunteers who make our community special.

Residents from Forest Lake were well represented amongst the award recipients. The awardees included Dan and Julie Baldwin, who were both nominated for their many years of service to the Forest Lake National Seniors. Dianna Remington of the Forest Lake Girl Guides, and Forest Lake RSL Sub-Branch President Stuart Bradley were also honoured for their respective services to the community.

As usual there were accolades for the fantastic Lions Club of Forest Lake, with Project Coordinator April Lindel honoured for organising community events such as the Walk with the Lions charity fun-run at the Parklands, which helped raise important funds for childhood cancer research.

Another worthy recipient with ties to several of Forest Lake community organisations was Linda Paton, through her role as Treasurer for our Forest Lake Community House and the Community Events Association.

Forest Lake Rotary Club President Bradley Chipper was also rewarded for his years of helping those less fortunate.

Finally, Les Brooks was recognised for his service to the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club. I am sure you have read Les’ monthly update in The Lake News about recent outings and activities.

These are just some of the wonderful volunteers from our community and there are so many more who make Forest Lake a better place. If you know someone who deserves to be recognised in the future, please consider contacting our office to nominate them.

FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update

I wonder how many of us stop to ponder the origin of the acronym ANZAC and how it came to be used in general terminology? It is difficult to say who originally thought of the acronym. There are several accounts.

One account is attributed to General Sir William Birdwood Commander of the Australian and New Zealand Corps who on 19 December 1915 said: “On taking command of the ANZAC Corps in Egypt a year ago, I was asked by General Headquarters to suggest a name for the beach where we had made good our first precarious footing and asked that this be recorded as ANZAC Cove - a name which the bravery of our men has now been made historical, while it remains a geographical landmark for all time.”

General Sir Ian Hamilton’s version in writing the preface to Ellis Silas’ book Crusading at ANZAC anno domino wrote on 29 April 1916: “As the man who, first seeking to save himself the trouble, omitted the five full stops and brazenly coined the word ANZAC in my preface.”

C E W Bean, official war historian attributed the acronym to Lieutenant A C White RASC of the British Army. One day, early in 1915, Major C.M. Wagstaff, then junior member of the ‘operations’ section of Birdwood’s staff, walked into the General Staff office and mentioned to the clerks that a convenient word was wanted as a code name for the Corps. The clerks had noticed the big initials on the cases outside their room — A. & N. Z. A. C.; and a rubber stamp for registering correspondence had also been cut with the same initials. When Wagstaff mentioned the need of a code word, one of the clerks (according to most accounts Lieutenant A.T. White) suggested: “How about ANZAC?” Major Wagstaff proposed the word to the general, who approved of it, and ANZAC thereupon became the code name of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. It was, however, some time before the code word came into general use, and at the Landing, many men in the divisions had not yet heard of it.

In a footnote, Bean added that “the word had already been used amongst the clerks. Possibly the first occasion was when Sgt G.C. Little asked Sgt H.V. Milligan to throw him the ANZAC stamp.”

The cool nights and lovely clear days of July make it a pleasure to spend time in the fresh air and in our gardens even with the occasional winter westerly wind blowing however on a brighter note, the days are now becoming longer. Some of the garden is now dormant or slow growing with the coolness however Camellias, Japonicas and the Snow Flakes are in full bloom to name a few. I must admit when driving around there are many homes with at least one Snow Flake showing a beautiful blanket of white flowers. Indoor plants can rapidly become dry in heated rooms. Do the ‘finger’ test to check if your plants, both indoors and outdoors, require watering. If the soil is moist – don’t water. When watering is necessary, it is best to water in the morning so as the plants can absorb the moisture before the sun sets.

Last month we had a bus trip to Rocky Point Mulching and the River Walk Garden. I don’t think many of us had money left in our pockets after purchasing potting mix, sugar cane mulch and other products at low prices from Rocky Point Mulching. After an enjoyable lunch at Jacobs Well Tavern we were headed to the River Walk Garden where so many plants were on sale at reasonable prices. Again we opened our purses and almost filled the bottom of the bus with the many, many plants that are now growing in Forest Lake.

One job we must not forget to do this month is to check our lawn for bindii. This painful weed, especially when you stand on it bare-footed, is currently in the early stages of growth.

Spray with a bindii organic spray to eliminate them from your lawn. Also it is now a good time to dig in some manure or compost into your garden so as the soil will have time to get itself in good condition before the summer planting.

Possums – the nightly visitors to our garden eating our vegetables or, more of a concern, are the leaves and flowers on our treasured plants. I don’t mind them taking the occasional passionfruit but not my flowers. I know some residents leave out an apple or a banana for the possums, maybe this is one way to get them to leave the flowers alone. In this month’s Good Dirt, our 16 page monthly newsletter, there is an informative article on several eco-friendly ways to encourage the possum to leave our plants alone. The pointy end of the season The Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club is nearly at the end of a successful season of new growth for the club in the key age groups of U5-U8, setting a strong foundation for the future.

Players have enjoyed wins aplenty and an abundance of Home Games to nurture their passion for rugby and of course, being part of an amazing team of parents and enthusiastic and dedicated young players.

The Wasps recently celebrated with a family day for members, enjoying a bouncy castle, fairy floss and a combined parents/kids game. Now attention turns to preparing for our Trophy Day in August and Season 2017.

It has been a challenging, yet satisfying year for us, as we moved to focus on our Saturday teams and ensuring the next stage of development for our club was secure. We have laid some important steps forward to achieving our vision for a multi-sport facility in the heart of Forest Lake.

These steps include setting up a brand new Forest Lake cricket club, which will start with junior Training Academy programs for ages 5-8 and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Super 8sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for ages 7-8 in Term 4.

The club is keen for school teams to have the opportunity to play club cricket in Term 4, prior to school cricket in Term 1; also that winter sports groups can offer their members another summer sports option, along with Little Athletics.

In addition, we encourage existing social cricket groups to get in contact with the club. To be a satellite for Wests is a wonderful option for us, as we have support from them and all the resources and equipment to start with of any other club, so our foundational players wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss out by coming to us. Anyone who comes from Forest Lake, Heathwood, Pallara and Ellen Grove in particular can now have their own home field to enjoy!

Sign ups for cricket will take place after the rugby season and parents can register their interest at: forestlakecricket@gmail.com. A dedicated Facebook page and a featured tab on the Wests Cricket website for the Forest Lake club will be up and running by the end of July, but until then interested parents can visit www. forestlakewasps.com.au for more information.
