Monthly markets now on at Woodcrest State College Residents of the local greater Springfield area now have access to monthly markets and carboot sale conveniently located at Woodcrest State College Springfield.

Proposed to the school’s P&C this year by parent and committee member, Bec Mullen, the purpose of the markets is multifaceted.

“We want to showcase our school and various business’s within the region,” said Bec. “The markets aim is to support local businesses and families as well as raising funds for the school to assist with upgrades that support our children’s education.”

Funds raised through the markets will be used by the P&C to provide programs and resources for the school that would otherwise not be able to be accessed.

The markets, held every third Sunday of the month, offer a variety of food vendors to the public as well as making produce vendors and small business stalls accessible to local residents. With anyone from families to community groups able to book a space in the secondhand carboot alley, there is plenty to see and buy for everyone.

“We have coffee, breakfast BBQ, local produce, local candle makers, soap makers, plants and a variety of items in the carboot alley.

“There really is something for everyone with our family friendly events and such a wide range of items for sale each time.”

The Woodcrest Community Markets committee is always looking for new sellers and vendors and have introduced a winter special for June, July and August. The cost for business and food vendors is just $20 per month and only $10 per month for a carboot space. Send an email to woodcrestmarket@gmail.com for more details.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis It was my birthday last month and I turned the lovely round age of 45 (not quite halfway there yet!). May is my favourite month of the year because it includes first Mother’s Day and then just a week or so later my birthday, with one of our children’s in between the two.

This means lots of cake and spoiling, which suits me down to the ground.

As I get older, I’m finding people’s obsession with age interesting. I don’t know if it’s because I’m the youngest in my family and in my husband’s and therefore there is always someone older than me around but I have just never had an issue with getting older.

And I feel like I’m in the minority! Leading up to my birthday, there were so many comments from friends and neighbours about my age. And they all seem to think I must have a problem with aging. And I don’t! So the obvious conclusion is that they are the ones with the issue about it. We like to impose our own perception of things onto others, don’t we?

For me, I think much of my attitude towards aging stems from another attitude that is right at my core - I refuse to be limited. By anything or anyone. If someone says something can’t be done, you can be sure I’ll give it a go. I do try not to be an idiot though - if there is a really good reason such as a nine out of ten chance that I will die or hurt someone else, I probably will give it a miss.

But more generally speaking, I will question everything and not just take another’s word for it (this is a trait that I know my husband particularly loves about me!).

I have no problem with reasonable limitations such as humans not being made to fly or not being able to permanently walk on my hands or deciding to just stop eating and drinking and still be alive. But I really do have a problem with the limitations we impose on ourselves and others that we shouldn’t. Limitations like age, gender, size, ability, education, finances and influence.

This column is not long enough, nor written by someone with enough knowledge, to delve into the ‘why’ of those limitations. All I know is that if you have enough determination, passion and resilience, our goals are achievable. At 45 I’m only just embarking on studying a degree in human services (social work) and I don’t feel at all concerned about my age when I graduate, the potential scenario of an employer thinking I’m too old for a job or how long I will be in the industry before I retire. Who cares?? Let those things worry about themselves, I say!

I recently met a 79 year old woman who had three degrees and a PhD in psychology, all achieved after she was 60. Don’t be limited. Go after what you want regardless of your own or other’s perceived barriers. The possibilities are limitless!

An idea that has laid dormant for a few years has now seeded and taken root in Westside Community Care’s (WCC) voluntary staff member, Lyn Kally, resulting in plans for a community garden to become a reality.

Located on the council owned land managed by WCC, the gardens will enhance the property of the community centre, already a thriving hub and place of connection for many locals, especially those who are struggling in the current economic climate and have fallen on hard times.

With a committee of knowledgeable and experienced members, one being horticulturalist Rebecca Turvey, the gardens are now awaiting council action, with approval already granted and Cr David Morrison giving the project an enthusiastic green light. “I have spoken to the founders of The Rock Community Gardens as well as horticulturists and am confident this will be a great way to encourage even more connection and sense of community for locals,� said Lyn. “We are wanting every interested person to be involved and would like to focus on ethnic groups and Indigenous Australians growing their own bush tucker and other foods, and perhaps at some later stage, sharing the foods in a meal.

Members of the community garden will be able to take home their share of the vegetables with any excess going to families in need. “We hope it will bring the community together, bring pride of ownership of the gardens, pride of participation as a community, encouraging friendships without prejudice. Oneness.�

Currently, the ground needs machinery to break it up so work can begin on getting the soil ready for planting.

Donations of machinery and time or funds would be gladly welcomed and much appreciated. The community garden committee will also be applying for grants to hasten the process.

Volunteers from the community are also asked to make contact with Lyn. “We need more people who are wanting to help establish the gardens, happy to dig, and toss and turn the soil, especially people who are available during the week and on Saturdays.�

The John Oxley District Orchid Society is holding their Annual Winter show in July, where many varieties will be on display and for sale.

The show will be held this year on Saturday 15 July from 8.30am to 4.00pm and again on Sunday 16 July from 9.00am to 3.30pm at the Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens in the Auditorium.

Entry to the show, considered to be one of Brisbaneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier Orchid Shows, is $4 per adult with children admitted free of charge. Elder abuse is any act which causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust, such as a family member or friend. The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect. Elder abuse is vastly under-reported but the World Health Organisation estimates that up to 10 per cent of older people worldwide are affected.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day seeks to prevent elder abuse by giving targeted information to seniors and encouraging community participation. The day is all about working together to bring greater awareness of the mistreatment of older people wherever they live, and to highlight the need for appropriate action.

Major events come to town with council support Four major community events will be held in Ipswich later this year with the support of council.

The sponsorships were confirmed last month with council backing the Weet-Bix Little Big Dash, Ipswich Home Gardener’s Expo, Australian Vintage Kart Prix and Workshops Rail Museum Open Day. Mayor Paul Pisasale said the events would bring thousands of people to Ipswich.

“The little big dash family obstacle adventure will come to Ipswich for the first time at Limestone Park in July while the 14th annual gardener’s expo will once again be held at Glebe Road Uniting Church in August,” he said.

“The kart prix returns to Willowbank Raceway from August 11 to 13 and Ipswich residents will receive free entry to The Workshops Rail Museum on Saturday, 11 November.

“These events will bring the Ipswich community together and there’s genuinely something for every age and a wide range of interests.”

2017 City of Ipswich Scholarship recipient, Senthil Dharmalingam is on track to completing Nursing at USQ. A passion for helping others, combined with a desire to give back to the community, is driving Springfield resident Senthil Dharmalingam on his journey to become a nurse.

The 2017 City of Ipswich Scholarship recipient is making the most of his opportunities, having come a long way since he arrived in Australia with all his possessions in a single suitcase.

Indian-born Mr Dharmalingam migrated to Australia in 2008 in search of a better life and shortly after started work in a steel factory. He is now pursuing a career change, inspired by wife Mekala who is a registered nurse.

“After working in the steel factory for seven years, I decided it was time for a change,” Mr Dharmalingam said.

“Where I grew up in India there was not a lot of opportunities to grow and have a career. It was actually my wife who inspired me to become a nurse.

“I’m the first person in my family to go to university, which makes me very proud, and I could not have imagined the opportunities that I have in Australia.”

Mr Dharmalingam is on track to complete his Bachelor of Nursing this year and hopes to secure work in a hospital.

“I am interested in cardiac care and working with the elderly and also plan to continue volunteering in my community,” Mr Dharmalingam.

Mayor Paul Pisasale said Mr Dharmalingam was a great example of why Ipswich City Council’s annual scholarship with USQ was so important.

“This is what the City of Ipswich Scholarship with USQ is all about, helping to ease the burden on hardworking people who want to better themselves through study and make a difference,” Cr Pisasale said. “Council has been supporting students at USQ for many years to promote the development of local skills.”

The City of Ipswich Scholarship with USQ was established by council in 2000 and is an annual gift of $5,000 to recognise academic excellence and assist a meritorious student to study an undergraduate program at USQ Ipswich. The scholarship acknowledges and supports the development of local skills.

Ipswich, a city of innovation

Ipswich has been recognised as a national leader in innovation for its work to establish startup hub Fire Station 101.

Ipswich City Council took out the Innovative Management Initiative Award at the Local Government Professionals Australia National Congress event held in Hobart late last month and follows the council winning the Queensland award for innovation earlier this year.

Mayor Paul Pisasale said the accolade recognised council’s innovative approach to kick-starting and nurturing a vibrant startup ecosystem in the region.

“Fire Station 101 is unique. It is Australia’s first and only fully government backed innovation hub and has set a new standard for how local governments can lead an economic and social transformation in their community by fostering innovation and entrepreneurship,” Cr Pisasale said.

“One of its greatest strengths is that it runs as its own entity, backed by innovative policies and processes in areas such as procurement, finance, human resources and asset management.

“The results speak for themselves, in 18 months we’ve taken Ipswich from a region with just five startups and the lowest density ratio of all regions to having the highest ratio of startup growth in Queensland.”

Fire Station 101 is a key part of the Ipswich Smart City Program, which sets the course for transforming the region into Australia’s most liveable and prosperous Smart City.

“Our Smart City Program is not about gimmicky technology, but rather building our community’s connectedness, capabilities and prospects through new solutions to city challenges and opportunities,” Cr Pisasale said.

“This vision has been put into action at Fire Station 101, which since opening has attracted 150 startup members, spawned 15 new digital technology companies and delivered 120 events attended by more than 3000 people.

“Startups are working across innovative industries including Virtual Reality, Internet of Things and Social Entrepreneurship. We are also reskilling and retooling our existing workforce to take advantage of the opportunities the digital technology economy presents.

“This is about unlocking economic opportunities, creating jobs and delivering meaningful social change through innovation.”

Library changes to help shape new CBD facility

Layout changes at Ipswich Central Library will be used to help shape the development of a new facility in the CBD. The plan to transform the South Street library will further enhance the customer experience by adopting design elements that focus on light, space and technology.

Ipswich Libraries spokesman Councillor David Pahlke said the plan was built around community outcomes, customer engagement and digital innovation.

“A lot of this comes back to the creation of zones – our most popular collections will be located on the ground level along with movies and music,” he said.

“Level one will become a quiet area for study, research, local history and general reading, while the mezzanine level has already been repurposed as a programming space and quiet zone.

“We’re also taking steps to make power points and USB charge points more accessible and a permanent technology zone will be created with the launch of the STEAM Powered Makerspace.

“From a presentation perspective, we’re maximising the use of natural light and entry points by removing clutter and creating cleaner lines.

“The children’s area is now more welcoming – artificial turf has been installed in the courtyard and tiered seating will offer more room for group programs.

“These changes give us an opportunity to gauge customer reaction and that feedback will be used to inform the design of our new library facilities over coming years.”

Canine Parvovirus Disease in Australia

I have seen a lot of Parvovirus Disease in the early stages of my career but in recent years very few cases around the Forest Lake area due to the vaccination program. Most dog owners have regular vaccinations in accordance with their veterinarianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guidelines. A recent worrying report released by the Australian Veterinary Association, advises that a new form of the common and highly contagious canine parvovirus (CPV) has been discovered in Australia by researchers at the University of Adelaide.

While the new strain, known as CPV-2c, is spreading around the world, until now there has been no confirmed evidence of outbreaks in Australia. However, according to the research, over the past two years, confirmed isolated cases of CPV-2c have occurred in South Australia and Victoria, with suspected cases also occurring in Queensland and Northern Territory.

While more work needs to be done to understand the new strain, dog owners need to be aware that CPV-2c is now in Australia. Research has found that in most cases, in-clinic diagnostic tests have shown negative results in infected animals, making it hard to detect. Also, most of the cases reported have occurred in dogs already vaccinated against parvovirus, although the clinical signs are typically milder than in unvaccinated dogs.

Until more is known, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important that dog owners continue to protect their pets with the current vaccine, and take their dogs to the vet if they are unwell. Signs of CPV infection include some or all of the following: decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhoea. CPV can have a high mortality rate but treatments have improved since I first encountered the disease in the late 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

Busting Desexing Myths Desexing Myth 1: It will change my pet’s personality. Desexing will not change your pet’s personality. It may even have a positive impact by reducing aggression in dogs, urine spraying in cats and decreased desire to roam!

Desexing Myth 2: My pet will become fat and lazy. This is true only if you let it.

Overeating and a lack of exercise leads to this, not desexing.

Desexing Myth 3: My pet should have at least one litter. There is no truth in this whatsoever. All it does is make sure that there are more puppies or kittens looking for homes.

Desexing Myth 4: Desexing can negatively impact their health. Desexing your pet can actually reduce the risk of some forms of cancer and other diseases. These include urine infections, mammary and ovarian cancer in females and perineal hernias, testicular and prostate cancer in males.

Members of our club embarked on a trip to the Blue mountains and the Hunter valley on 22 April. Members and guests enjoyed an 11 day odyssey to the Hunter Valley and the Blue Mountains, returning inland to visit Woodlands stud historic Saumrez Homestead at Armidale.

There were rides for all who wanted them at the Blue Mountains on the various cable cars as well as that horrifying train over the side of the mountain, which a lot of people enjoyed. The following day it was touring on the Big Red bus, a double decker. We inadvertently left one of our members behind, much mirth followed... sorry Trevor! Then it was on to lunch at the Tea Pot museum, where we enjoyed an interesting talk about some of their collection. Our member, Gail, is a tea pot collector but sadly was not on our tour...she would have been in raptures!

The drive down to the Jenolan Caves was steep and winding with magnificent views. Our driver did an excellent job of navigating the winding road safely. On arrival at the caves we went to have morning tea only to be told the scones had been burnt and were therefore not available but a cup of tea or coffee was quite sufficient.

At the Hunter Valley Carriages we climbed aboard horse drawn wagons for wine tasting, then went to lunch at Hunter Valley Gardens. One of our morning tea stops was at Wallabadah where we enjoyed our cuppa in the First Fleet Memorial gardens, then it was on to Quirindi where we visited Bobs shed (not our Bob). On this tour we had a money tin which was used to collect donations for the Ipswich Koala Protection Society.

Fines were applied for being the last on the coach. I am happy to say we were all naughty at some stage and we collected a good sum for the koalas. I am sure everyone enjoyed themselves.

On 3 May, we had a games day with a lovely morning tea.

It was our meeting day on 10 May with a guest speaker from the Koala Society. She brought along one of her koalas which made for a very interesting talk.

Our raffle day on 17 May was a good morning with plenty of raffles with 24 May being trivia morning it was time to put our thinking caps on again. Anyone interested in joining the club and coming along to our fun mornings and outings, can ring me, Pat, on 3818 9343.

We cannot talk about the future without talking about children. They are our future.

The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield recognises that children are our future and need assistance to achieve their potential. The clubs fundraising efforts have recently funded Rotary Youth Programs such as Youth Exchange, Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment and will soon fund a young local participant in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program.

Rotarians recognise the positive change that young people make through leadership development activities, community and international service projects, and exchange programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding.

The Club’s young participants in the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) program, Eeva Tampel and Makayla Smart, enjoyed the challenging activities with likeminded people thus developing their communication skills and having lots of fun at the same time. They enjoyed the mystery factor and can definitely recommend it to other students. Eeva said, “This experience has taught me many great skills. I had amazing unexpected experiences.” While Makayla said, “We did many activities that improved my leadership, communication and teamwork skills. I would encourage any student to go on this camp as it was so much fun and you learn so much from it.”

The RYPEN is a Youth Leadership conference for young Pictured (L-R) are Eeva Tampel, people between 15 and 17. The conference is a weekend long President Chris Steinback, and Makalya Smart. camp designed to develop young people’s potential through a mixture of lecture style sessions and adventure-based learning. RYPEN is designed for students who are seen as the upcoming leaders in a school, not those students who are already leading and achieving amazing things or those at the bottom end, but those students who just need a bit of a push and a confidence boost to start achieving at their full potential. RYPEN has as its principal aim, to communicate to young people taking part in the program a series of ideas, problems and social experiences which will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards and allow them to broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically.

The club has recently achieved success with Youth Exchange hosting young Austrian student Paul Gorbach who currently attends The Springfield Anglican College and will be sending an outbound student.

Currently, we need to alleviate the parking issues at Springfield Central, so what’s possible? When Mt Juillerat Drive opens from School Road to Centenary Highway, perhaps two transport hubs (bus and carparks) can be developed – one at Ripley and one at the end of Keidges Road where provisions are already in place for a carpark.

These hubs would allow for a peak hour bus service – say two hours in the AM and three hours in the PM – to run a regular service every 15 minutes from the hubs to Springfield Central Station. Similar park and ride schemes elsewhere are designed to ease parking issues and perhaps such a system here in our eastern suburbs would do the same. If the idea has merit then I’m sure transport service funding models could be created to provide a return for joint venture partners or foreign investment entities to run a small fleet of buses.

Also I wanted to talk about the issue of fishing around Discovery Lake. Just a reminder that fishing is illegal in this lake. As with most man-made lakes, native fish species were introduced when Discovery Lake was completed to assist with biodiversity and maintaining water quality. I have had several complaints about fish guts in Discovery Park and on the bridge at Springfield Lakes Boulevard. It’s not polite and the smell is disgusting, so please consider the environment and your community and do the right thing.

At our last outing, while we were sitting around the table at lunch, I realized we were wishing a number of our fellow probians well for their upcoming trips and welcoming back members who have been travelling.

We ourselves have not long arrived home from a trip.

Our plans for May included a lunch outing to the Fox and Hounds Country Inn in the Gold Coast hinterland and a lunch at the Queens Park Cafe in Ipswich. We joined with the Forest Lake Probus Club for a catch up and morning tea beside the lake at Moselle’s Restaurant in Springfield Lakes.

Our April lunch venue was Spring Lake Hotel. Mid-autumn is a lovely time of year to sit out on the verandah to enjoy a delicious lunch.

I thought I would share with you a little of the history of our club.

In November 2008, a meeting was held with Goodna Rotary Club to discuss the setting up of a local Probus Club. And so began our GoodnaSpringfield Probus Club-a combined club for men and women. The 12 founder members have grown to a membership in excess of 50. We adhere to the Probus motto of Friendship, Fellowship and Fun. Our outings officer organises at least one outing per month which could be a movie day, a picnic in the park or a trip to somewhere of interest. Members are encouraged to be fully active participants in our club activities and suggestions are always welcome.

As well as our regular monthly meetings, we also enjoy a monthly coffee morning and a monthly lunch. The venues and days of these events alter every month so members with other commitments are able to attend.

Our monthly newsletter provides information about forthcoming events and guest speakers at our meetings.

Our monthly meetings consist of about 15 minutes of club formalities, a five to ten minute spot filled by a member on a topic of interest followed by afternoon tea and a fellowship break. The second half of the meeting is preserved for our guest speaker on interesting and diverse topics.

June in Ipswich is all about horsepower. The action begins with the largest championship drag racing event held outside of North America, the Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway from 8 to 11 June. This year is extra special with it being the 50th running of the classic event and the 30th time the Winternationals has been held at Willowbank. If you enjoy the roar of a finely tuned engine, the smell of race fuel and burnt rubber and the thrill of high octane action where fractions of a second make all the difference, this is one for you.

This month is also Ipswich Cup time, with the iconic race day set down for Saturday, 17 June. This year ’s event features a new and exciting area, the Lazy Bear Beach Party alongside the improved 1866 on the Green and Home Turn Corporate areas. The popular Fashions on the Field are back again and the after party will keep the fun going once the races stop. Grab a group of friends and get along to our city’s social event of the year, the Ipswich Cup. Gateway Drive is now open at Augustine Heights, connecting Technology Drive and the Centenary Highway off-ramp. Council’s annual traffic count showed nearby Augusta Parkway remains the busiest suburban road in Ipswich with 31,400 vehicles using the road each day, and the $5.5 million Gateway Drive further improves local traffic flow. It offers access to Vicinity Precinct, which currently includes a number of small businesses as well as Queensland Ambulance Service, Veolia and SRS Queensland. It will eventually include a child care centre and a range of car dealerships along with food convenience stores such as McDonald’s and Red Rooster.

It’s been a busy time in council as we work to finalise the 2017-2018 Budget, which will be released in coming weeks. Making sure Ipswich families get a fair deal is always front and centre when we prepare the budget, and this year has been no different. I look forward to providing more budget information next month.

On Tuesday May 9 the Federal Budget was handed down in Canberra.

There were a number of new measures introduced by the Government which will impact residents throughout our local community.

A new school funding education model was introduced, which, while it was an improvement on the Government’s last attempt, will still cut $22 billion dollars from schools over the next decade.

This will particularly impact our local Catholic schools who will lose the most funding from the changes.

The age to access the pension will be lifted to 70 years old meaning that Australia will have the oldest pension age in the developed world.

The Energy Supplement to new pensioners, people with disability, carers and Newstart recipients will also be cut. This will mean a cut of $14.10 per fortnight to single pensioners or $365 a year and a cut of $21.20 per fortnight to couple pensioners or around $550 a year.

Changes to Family Tax Benefits which will also mean that 12,000 families in the electorate will lose their $354 as a result of the abolition of the Family Tax Benefit Part B End of Year Supplement.

The Medicare rebate freeze will be lifted, however, it will be a staggered process over the next two years. The freeze will remain on GP and specialist consultations until 2018 and specialist procedures and allied health services until 2019.

In the week prior to the budget I was pleased to see our community come together for the Hands Off Our Services rally that I attended with Shadow Minister Jenny Macklin MP and councillor Charles Strunk.

The message from locals was loud and clear that our community won’t stand by and watch as vital services remained under threat.

I’m happy to report that since then the Federal Government has removed some of the remaining ‘Zombie’ measures from the 2014 budget where some community services were included in $13 billion dollars’ worth of cuts.

I was pleased to speak on this in Parliament and see that our essential community services remain protected.

During the month of May, most European countries and cities run a series of free art and culture-filled events, referred to as Long Night of Museums.

The event unites Europeans to celebrate culture, art, history, achievements, science and discoveries. The cities are buzzing with creative atmosphere that bring families, friends and participants together for a night of cultural festivities.

During the night, all participating museums, art galleries, collections and archives open their doors to showcase and share their treasures with visitors and tourists for free. It is a night where artists, custodians of art and managers of national treasures meet, not only to share but to learn and enjoy.

Despite being a free event (public transport is also free for the event’s goers) the event is now recognised as one of the major boosters into the economy and an important element of European contemporary heritage.

The event originated in the late 1990s, in Berlin. Shortly after, it was enthusiastically embraced by other countries and nations.

This year marks the 14th anniversary of the event in Poland. With over 230 cultural events concurrently run in the country’s capital city - Warsaw alone, it is a place to be and feel European’s vibrant cultural energy. With hundreds of Polish cities signed up and taking part in this continent’s wide event, there is something for everyone. The concept of ‘culture beyond boundaries’ is taken to yet another level.

Swim Factory at Springfield Central Growing up in Camira, I clearly recall McMahon’s Soft Drink truck drivers coming door to door. As a family this was a special treat. McMahon’s Soft Drinks was started in Ipswich in 1934 and closed in 1991.

Peter McMahon, a son of the founder, converted the old soft drink factory in Ipswich into an indoor learn to swim school called the Swim Factory. In 2014 Peter McMahon made a bold decision to expand and open another Swim Factory at Orion Springfield Central. The Swim Factory at Orion Peter McMahon and Cr David Morrison at the Orion Springfield Central Springfield Central Swim Factory while it was was constructed and being constructed.

I had the privilege of opening it in April 2015.

As an ex physical education teacher, I believe it is very important for all children in Queensland to be water confident. The Swim factory at Orion Springfield Central is heated all year round and children are taught water confidence in a fun environment.

Peter McMahon currently holds many distance swim records for his Cr David Morrison and grandson Judah in age and still swims most days of the year. the pool on opening day on 10 April 2015.

‘Wise Guys’ getting on with Men’s Business

‘Wise Guys’ Men’s Business is an event run by Ipswich City Council in partnership with Able Australia and Ipswich Men’s Shed as part of Men’s Health Week 2017.

‘Wise Guys’ Communities across Australia come together and create fun and engaging events, promotions and activities tailored to the needs of men and boys. The Ipswich event will be held on Friday 23 June from 10am to 1.30pm at North Ipswich Reserve Corporate Centre, 43 The Terrace North Ipswich.

With guest speakers, information stalls, and a BBQ lunch, this free event aims to raise the profile and public awareness about men’s health and wellbeing during Men’s Health week.

Putting a spotlight on men’s health will can improve the delivery of health and well-being services to boys and men and increase men’s own awareness of their health, wellbeing and relationship options.

As well as focusing on men in the community, ‘Wise Guys’ seeks to educate medical, health care and welfare professionals to better equip them to deal with men’s health issues.

Program targets attitudes towards rubbish and recycling Littering, illegal dumping and waste reduction will be the focus of a new partnership between Ipswich City Council and the Queensland Government. The program will complement council’s Beautiful Ipswich initiative by encouraging people to change their attitudes towards rubbish and recycling.

Community safety spokeswoman Councillor Sheila Ireland said the program was based on the successful South West Region Roadside Litter Prevention Project on the Darling Downs.

“By working with the government and linking with Beautiful Ipswich we will generate more momentum to reinforce our messages on littering, illegal dumping and recycling contamination,” she said.

“Education and awareness programs will enable people to make better choices and informed decisions that reduce waste across the Ipswich community.

“Illegal dumping cost ratepayers about $250,000 in 2016 – that is money spent on collection, disposal and compliance.

“As a council we’d rather use that money for community facilities and that’s why we’re calling on people to work with us to preserve, protect and enhance our city.”

The council and state partnership is set to start in coming weeks.
