Garden Group

by John Prout The first month of winter is upon us, time to put the electric blanket on the bed, buy wood for the fireplace or just snuggle up under a warm blanket. Did you know that the month of June was named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage? Maybe this is why many women like to be June brides. Winter brings shorter days giving us less time to spend outdoors, however, there is still plenty to do in the garden. I like the idea of not having to mow the lawn every fortnight. Although growth in the garden slows down in these cooler months, there are still plenty of tasks to complete. • Prune hydrangeas and take cuttings to grow new plants. Only cut back those stems that flowered last season. • Reduce watering of indoor plants in winter. • Plant hippeastrum bulbs with the top of the bulb protruding from the soil. For the gardeners who are lovers of roses – The Queensland Council of Garden Clubs are bringing out a new rose to celebrate their fifty years. The official launch will be next month at Government House and available at the end August. The rose is a floribunda and golden yellow with red edges in colour. Talking about roses – what a great array of colour and perfumes of roses we saw at Brindabla Country Rose Garden during last month’s bus trip – truly magnificent! Lunch was at the Chocolate Factory and it was not possible to leave without buying some of their delicious chocolates – oh well, so much for the waist line! Watch for details of our Christmas in July bus trip. It promises to be another fun-filled day in the Mt Tamborine area. The flyer will be available at our June meeting. Also keep 14 September clear as our bus trip will be to Stradbroke Island. Hasn’t our Bench been wonderful with so many displays of flowers and foliage etc. benched by the members? The wide range of different flowers and foliage is great. We should be proud of the flowers we are growing successfully here. The guest speaker this month will be Ian Wintle covering the topic of Bizarre and Beautiful Plants. Some of these bizarre plants will amaze you in his power point presentation. Next month on 6th June, Dr. Rochelle Steven will talk about Birds of Southern Queensland. This will be an interesting talk as we all love to have flowers and native trees to attract the birds into our gardens.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

Next meeting Tuesday, 6 June at 9.30 for a 10am start. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

Personally Speaking

Need Competent Legal or Visa Advice?

with Susannah Friis It was my birthday last month and I turned the lovely round age of 45 (not quite halfway there yet!). May is my favourite month of the year because it includes first Mother’s Day and then just a week or so later my birthday, with one of our children’s in between the two. This means lots of cake and spoiling, which suits me down to the ground. As I get older, I’m finding people’s obsession with age interesting. I don’t know if it’s because I’m the youngest in my family and in my husband’s and therefore there is always someone older than me around but I have just never had an issue with getting older. And I feel like I’m in the minority! Leading up to my birthday, there were so many comments from friends and neighbours about my age. And they all seem to think I must have a problem with aging. And I don’t! So the obvious conclusion is that they are the ones with the issue about it. We like to impose our own perception of things onto others, don’t we? For me, I think much of my attitude towards aging stems from another attitude that is right at my core - I refuse to be limited. By anything or anyone. If someone says something can’t be done, you can be sure I’ll give it a go. I do try not to be an idiot though - if there is a really good reason such as a nine out of ten chance that I will die or hurt someone else, I probably will give it a miss. But more generally speaking, I will question everything and not just take another’s word for it (this is a trait that I know my husband particularly loves about me!). I have no problem with reasonable limitations such as humans not being made to fly or not being able to permanently walk on my hands or deciding to just stop eating and drinking and still be alive. But I really do have a problem with the limitations we impose on ourselves and others that we shouldn’t. Limitations like age, gender, size, ability, education, finances and influence. This column is not long enough, nor written by someone with enough knowledge, to delve into the ‘why’ of those limitations. All I know is that if you have enough determination, passion and resilience, our goals are achievable. At 45 I’m only just embarking on studying a degree in human services (social work) and I don’t feel at all concerned about my age when I graduate, the potential scenario of an employer thinking I’m too old for a job or how long I will be in the industry before I retire. Who cares?? Let those things worry about themselves, I say! I recently met a 79 year old woman who had three degrees and a PhD in psychology, all achieved after she was 60. Don’t be limited. Go after what you want regardless of your own or other’s perceived barriers. The possibilities are limitless!

History group launches latest book ‘Before Forest Lake’ History buffs and other interested community members gathered last month to celebrate the official launch of the Richlands, Inala and Suburbs History Group’s latest book, Before Forest Lake by Vicki Mynott. Held at the Community House on Alpine Street, the event attracted prominent locals such as Cr Charles Strunk and Milton Dick MP who both spoke words of thanks and congratulations to all involved, with Cr Strunk declaring the book officially ‘launched’ to much applause. President of the Richlands, Inala and Suburbs History Group, Angela Naumann said the book was made possible by the hard work of Vicki Mynott and past and present community members Vicki Mynott and who contributed their stories and memories to the project. Angela Naumann “Special thanks also to the Forest Lake Community House with founder of The Lake News, who funded the production of the book and provided the venue Chris Wren. for the launch,” said Angela. “We are most grateful for their help in making the story of Forest Lake’s history accessible to the community and recorded for future generations. “I would also like to thank Blue Fin Fishing Club for supplying the refreshments and the Forest Lake Photography Club who were busy on the evening taking photos as well as supplying photos for the display boards for the launch.” Before Forest Lake is one of over ten books the history group have produced over the last 21 years since its formation in 1996. If you’d like to purchase the book or find out more about the Richlands, Inala and Suburbs History Group, contact Angela by sending an email to secretary@rihghistory.org.au or by phoning 3372 2358. A copy of the book, signed by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Milton Dick MP, Cr Charles Strunk and author Vicki Mynott will be auctioned later this year at the annual Chaplaincy dinner to raise funds for Forest Lake Uniting Church to replace their stolen trailer. Algester Update This year, Queensland will celebrate its 158th birthday on Tuesday 6 June. Queensland Day is a chance to celebrate the state’s culture, heritage, people, places and industry. A time for all Queenslanders to stand tall and be proud of our accomplishments. Officially, Queensland Day marks the state’s separation from New South Wales as an independent colony on 6 June 1859. Moves towards statehood began with a public meeting in 1851 to consider separation from New South Wales. As the push for separation gained momentum, Queen Victoria was approached to consider establishing a separate colony based in Moreton Bay. The Queen gave her approval and signed the Letters Patent on 6 June 1859, now known as Queensland Day. As part of this year’s celebration I will be acknowledging the hard work, passion and commitment of local people who make a difference across the Algester Electorate with Queensland Day Awards. There’s still a few days left to nominate someone you think is an outstanding member of the community. You can call my office to make a verbal nomination or use this link: www.algester.wufoo.com/forms/queensland-day-awards/ Everyone is welcome to the awards ceremony on Saturday 10 June at Col Bennett Park, Algester, as part of the ‘Many Cultures, One Community’ event being held to celebrate Queensland Day. There will be stalls, entertainment, and food representing the many diverse cultures that exist in our community. I hope to see you there. I’ll also be holding a Mobile Office in Heathwood on Saturday 3 June. This is a great opportunity to come and have a chat about any issues that concern you or great things happening in the community that you’d like to share with me. Check my Facebook page - Leeanne Enoch MP - for more details or contact my office on 3737 2110.

Q & A with your trusted agent, Marilyn Thurtell. Marilyn Thurtell has been a local Agent in Forest Lake for over 15 years. She is the founding Owner and Principal of MTR Property Group. Marilyn is also the leading sales agent at MTR, and she prides herself on hard work and dedication. When you meet Marilyn you immediately feel at ease. She is someone who makes you feel valued and appreciated. Her outgoing, personable and loyal nature, make her very approachable and easy to get along with. When Marilyn isn’t running MTR Property Group in Forest Lake, you’ll find her enjoying the company of her friends, three children and two grandchildren. “The community atmosphere that comes with working in Forest Lake is the reason I never want to leave. I love reconnecting with people I know and meeting people who are new to the area. I love the casual yet professional atmosphere the MTR kiosk offers where locals, clients and other retailers can take a few minutes to have a chat.” What time does your day usually start? I am up bright and early around 5am – coffee really helps! I exercise first thing in the morning and then relax in the sauna for 30 minutes. Over breakfast I catch up on emails, messages and a little bit of social media. I then head to the office or to my first appointment for the day. You work in Forest Lake; what are some of your favourite spots in the suburb? It’s fantastic owning a house and working in the area. Forest Lake has a tight-knit community atmosphere. I love going for a walk around the Lake and often catch up with locals for a chat at the Coffee Club. On weekends, where will we find you? On Saturdays, I am up early and off to the farmer’s markets and optimistically a Park Run at 7:00am. It’s then a full day of work, work, work! On Sunday, I work for a couple of hours, after which I like to wind down from the week with a bike ride or some quiet time getting ready for the week ahead. How do you juggle your personal life with a high-profile job as the Principal of MTR? It’s not hard when you love what you do. It’s a pleasure to work in the Forest Lake Community. If I’m out for a coffee, dinner or a walk, it’s great bumping into clients and people I’ve met through my career. It is also important to look after yourself, stay fit and have some downtime to recharge – it helps keep you fresh and energised! What are three tips for getting your home to selling point? 1. Focus on your street appeal – that very first impression is important to buyers. 2. Take a look around your home to see where you can declutter. 3. Repair any outstanding maintenance items and, if viable, some fresh paint or flooring goes a long way. When choosing an Agent, look for someone who you can get to know and trust, someone you can talk openly to. An Agent should also have strong local knowledge and sales experience.

It was a sombre start to our meeting as it commenced with a minute’s silence in honour of our beloved couple Mae and Jim Morris who recently departed this earth. Brian then read a poem he composed on each one. Secretary Jenny was responsible for encouraging some Committee members to wear flowers as a token of approaching Mothers’ Day. Vice President Barb chaired the meeting as our President was visiting Japan. Newsletter Editor Brian was complaining all morning that he had lost a tooth and was still waiting for the arrival of the Tooth Fairy. The meeting then became very lively with lots of laughter permeating the venue. The greeters for the day, Kevin and Marge, probably set the tone for the day with their over-the-top welcoming of members and visitors alike. The designated speaker was Miriam Besa from Zambia. Her topic focussed on Growing up as a girl child in Africa. She was one of sixteen children and only six survived. Many African children do not live beyond the age of two due to poverty and all its implications. She thinks she was born in 1954 as years in Africa are just numbers and she picked the 1954 Birth Certificate. Her brother was her initial carer and at fifteen years she was married and gave birth to her first child at seventeen years of age. She had six children of her own, one of whom became a doctor in England and later migrated to Australia. It is here that they started a charity called Double Outreach to teach African women self-sufficiency and thus try and break the poverty cycle. It is the women in Africa who work far more than the men. The speaker emphasised that handouts do nothing to ameliorate the situation but what is vitally needed is to teach women how to grow crops and build their own shelters. Her aim is to continuously ask Zambians to find something they are good at and pursue that and not to rejoice in misery! Miriam then related the story of a man who was a constant worrier and worried himself to death. One day he was locked in a place similar to a cold room. He worried so much about his situation that he was found frozen to death, in spite of the fact that the room temperature was only fifty five degrees! Obviously there is a lesson to be learnt. According to Miriam ‘life is how you make it, and the journey of life should be joyful. Barry passed the Vote of Thanks. Activities Officer Joan has some interesting outings in the pipeline with a visit to Boggo Road Jail, a trip to Bribie Island and even a Hangi in the offing. So retirees and semi-retirees come and join us for fun, friendship and fellowship and share in all the frolic! Forest Lake is a Carpe Diem Probus Club! We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 10am at the Forest Lake Uniting Church Hall, 128 Waterford Road, Ellen Grove. For more information, contact Membership Officer Judith on 3278 8042 or President Frances on 0403 882 030.

Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Winter time and how the months are just flying by. Our May Branch meeting was a celebration of All Mothers. We also held a Huge Cent Auction with over 50 lots. A great selection of items to bid for. Thanks go to the organisers and those who donated all of the very nice items for the auction. We also listened to two very interesting speakers who told us all about their organisation, Friends With Dignity Australia, and what they do to assist those people in domestic violence situations. Coming up at this month’s Branch meeting on Thursday 8 we will have a special guest speaker. It promises to be very interesting, so why not come along? Also on the calendar for June is lunch at the Forest Lake Tavern on Thursday 22nd. Our April and May calendars were full of fabulous fun and travel. Many of our members attended the Anzac Day Service at Forest Lake where our President Members enjoying the friendly rivalry during some outdoor games at laid a wreath at the Shrine. A group took a trip on the recent outing to College’s Crossing. the Sunday Steam Train Ride which has whet the appetite for more train journeys. Other outings included a wonderful trip up to Kingaroy for four days. So much to see and do. We all had a great time. Colleges Crossing was our lovely picnic location in April, where all enjoyed a delicious BBQ lunch and games of bocce, thong throwing, tunnel ball and cheering the contestants. The ladies won the bragging rights again with their win over the men in the tunnel ball. National Seniors Forest Lake provides a friendly welcome to all ladies and gentlemen in the 50 something age group. There are many, many benefits of membership with National Seniors and the National Seniors website is also a great source for more helpful information. Next meeting date is Thursday June 8 at Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands, (second Thursday of the month) 9.30am sign in, 10am start. Morning tea will be followed by a guest speaker. Join us if you can for lunch at Lions after the meeting. To our members who are unwell, our best wishes for a return to good health. Forest Lake Lions Club update by Michael Janz Each year, the Lions Club of Forest Lake honours local Children of Courage. The Children of Courage Award recognises a very special group of children and their families. It is not a competition. Every recipient of an award is a winner in his or her own right. Children of Courage recognises children want to be accepted by others, regardless of any special needs they may have. This program awards children who have successfully overcome additional barriers. This year ten children and their families were recognised at a ceremony held at St John’s Anglican College Chapel. Everyone enjoyed a morning tea afterwards. The recipients of the award this year were: Elena Tsukamoto from St Johns College; Hunter McLaughlin; James Philpot; Isaac Price; Anthony Appleby; Troy Appleby from Richlands Scouts; Nathan Truong; Brydi Saul; Layesha Dix and Nuala Quall from Grand Avenue State School. Photos from the day can be viewed on the Forest Lake Lions Facebook page: www.facebook.com/LionsClubForestLake/ Special thanks to Milton Dick, Charles Strunk and Leeanne Enoch for their support and donations which helped fund the awards and morning tea. As always, many thanks to the Lions and Leos for making the celebration happen. How can you get involved? If you would like to find out about becoming a Forest Lake Lion, call Stuart Grierson on 0418 735 190. Let us know of any local needs that we could support. Monthly Update

by Les Brooks

Last month, the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club had a full bus of members who ventured out for a day trip to the Gold Coast War Museum. Our first stop was at a lovely park on the Nerang River, where our Committee served up a wonderful morning tea. Then it was back on the bus and onto the Gold Coast War Museum for a very informative tour of one of the largest collections of Militaria in Australia. The members were very impressed with the exhibits and said the museum was well worth the visit. Following this it was time to move onto the Wallaby Hotel at Mudgeeraba for lunch, but first most people took the opportunity to visit the local shopping mall for some retail therapy. The shopping must have been good, as we had to send a scout to bring some of them back to the Hotel as lunch was being served! All in all this was another great day trip experienced by the members. The Club’s ‘Extra Activity’ was a lunch on the 10th May held at the Forest Lake Hotel. We had another great attendance with everyone enjoying their selected lunch. The main topic of conversation was about our next trip to the Outback Spectacular Show, and funny stories about the Gold Coast Museum trip. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club Inc. is a local community based organisation that was formed over 23 years ago for people in the over 50 age group living in Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs. The club offers an avenue for members to make new friends and become part of an active group of like minded people who enjoy their leisure time. Our club is not affiliated with any other club or organisation however we do support some community ‘not-for-profit’ groups. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next two meetings are 16th June and 21st July. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Leonie (President) on 0427 846 057 or Les (Activities Members enjoying a day out to the Gold Coast Officer) on 3279 9449 or 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. FROM THE DESK OF

Councillor Charles Strunk Forest Lake Ward Councillor

The month of May always brings fun and exciting activities to Forest Lake. An enjoyable part of my job is getting the opportunity to meet with residents to discuss resolving important concerns, assist our community groups and mark important community milestones. I was honoured to have helped launch the RIHG history book - Before Forest Lake with Milton Dick Federal MP for Oxley and my wonderful friends from the Richlands Inala History Group at Forest Lake Community House. It was truly a memorable occasion and a huge thanks must go to author Vicki Mynott, President Angela Naumann and Richlands, Inala & Suburbs History Group for organising a successful and wonderful night. Congratulations to the Forest Lake Community House for funding this fabulous informative book. Join me also in thanking President D.C Hwang – President of Hakka Association of Queensland Australia Associated for organising a much welcomed colourful multicultural boat race community event at the Forest Lake Parklands. I was delighted to congratulate the winners and runner ups of the multicultural and dragon boat race on the day, watch the many cultural performances and visit all the delightful food stalls. Join me in congratulating the coaches and everyone for showcasing great teammanship on the day. Our community doesn’t fall short of good work and local champions. Join me in congratulating Forest Lake LJ Hooker for being the official drop off point for the Nappy Collective this year. This group redistribute unused and left over nappies to organisations that support families in crisis or in need. I was delighted to support this great initiative by doing my fair share. May is also a special month for Mums and carers. No matter how you spent your day, I hope it was full of enjoyment. I was pleased to attend the Forest Lake Mothers Day Twilight Market at the Lighthouse Event Centre. Well done Katrina, Pastor Joshua and team for making this a special Mothers Day event, and thanks to all the residents for the chance to spend some time at my stall chatting with you and having a few laughs. Another important cause I’m supporting this month is Homeless Connect. If you are in the area, feel free to pop in for a cuppa or drop off some much needed non-perishables in support of our most vulnerable. Homeless Connect is organisation provide medial, haircuts, toiletries cloths and bedding for homeless and at risk people. If you would like to donate, volunteer or would like to take part in future events, please don’t hesitate to contact my Forest Lake Ward office on 3407 1211.

Forest Lake Rotary Club update by Jeff Jones - President. As we head closer to our change-over on the 25th June, it’s frightening that we have already reached the middle of year. Once again, we have done our normal BBQ and attended functions within the community. It’s so interesting that the community is growing but all the service clubs appear to be falling in membership. What we give to charities each year is also increasing but without ongoing help from the people living in our area, we will finish up not having the required money to help those in need. Help, help, help - members urgently wanted. Must be aged over 25 years. Younger members will be able to join other areas of the Rotary organisation. Support your community and make a name for yourself by finding the worlds next major project. • Need to be facebook savvy • Know how to use twitter • And all other forms of social media • Have great ambitions, be ready to lead Rotary into the next great world project. Did you know that Rotary has all but eradicated Polio, only five cases still known and currently been treated from across the world all started from Australia. • Are you the next leader? All we need is a few hours a week or a fortnight, perhaps even a month, but the more who help, the less the burden on everybody. Rotary is one of the greatest organisations in the world. All it needs is you to give it a few hours to keep it that way. Membership meeting times can be arranged to suit. If you are interested, please contact Jeff by email at jeff.jones@y7mail.com or phone and leave a message on 0478 763 332. Rotary, making a difference.

FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update

by Alan Greig

The 2017 ANZAC Day commemoration is now behind us. It is therefore the duty of the RSL Forest Lake Sub-branch to reflect upon its success and recognise those who helped it be the success that it certainly was. A new attendance record was set when it was estimated that more than 4,000 people from the local community attended the Commemoration service. Unfortunately, marcher numbers from the RSL again dwindled which, regrettably, is to be expected as veterans age. Community reaction was again canvassed with the outcome judged to be excellent, as was the support from local organisations and people listed below. • All those who laid wreaths. • The 40 plus badge sellers who manned the various sales points for two weeks prior to ANZAC Day. • Shopping Centre Management at Forest lake, Inala, Richlands and Algester. • Fifteen schools sold badges and/or participated in the service including students from St.John’s Anglican College Senior, Middle and Junior schools, Forest Lake and Glenala State High Schools, and the following State schools Forest Lake, Serviceton, Acacia Ridge, Durack, Carol Park, Richlands East, St. Marks, Pallara, Grand Avenue and Western Suburbs Special School. • Twelve local community organisations including Forest Lake Rotary Club; Forest Lake Lions Club; St.John’s Ambulance; Durack/Inala Bowls Club; Model A Club of Forest Lake; Forest Lake Girl Guides; Forest Lake Junior Rugby Club; Forest Lake Probus Club; Richlands Scouts; Australian Air League-Forest Lake Squadron; National Seniors Forest Lake Branch; and Archerfield Air Cadets 219 Squadron. • Political representatives included Ms Melanie Wedgewood representing the Premier; Ms Leeanne Enoch and Mr Milton Dick (Queensland Government); and Crs. Charles Strunk and Angela Owen (BCC). • Forest Lake Baptist Church provided water bottles; Pastor Haydn Lea said the prayer of Remembrance and made the Benediction; Mark and Kathy Parsons provided a truck and the PA system; Mark Newman, Manager Heritage Bank Ltd for their financial support; Mark Gordon, Centenary Hire provided portaloos and seating; Pickwick Facility Services provided security and immediate past President Stuart Bradley provided the invocation and the address. In thanking RSL members and friends President Bob Richards observed that it was really splendid involvement from our community. Readers may be aware that the John Monash Centre in currently being constructed near Villers Bretonneux a town in northern France. It is the town famous for the Australian counter attack in April 1918 as a part of the main offensive that ended the war. It is planned to officially open the centre and allow visitors on ANZAC Day 2018. A motion will be put to the Board of Forest Lake RSL to raise funds to sponsor, or partially sponsor, a representative from the Club to attend the opening ceremony. General Sir John Monash is credited with a new way of warfare designed to save lives rather than expend them in “over the top charges” which cost the allies thousands of lives. Monash co-ordinated infantry, artillery, tanks and aircraft in the main allied offensive that ended the war in November 1918.

Family Focus

with Mark Mackay

How do you go in your family with devices? For most families, devices are a constant part of life - they sit in our pockets, we walk around with them in our hands, we stare blankly at them. However, it’s obviously not all negative. The availability of immediate information, weather forecasts and online family calendars are all good aspects of the use of devices. Recently, I discovered the benefit of an app called ‘Find iphone’. Because we share a family network, I can track my kids when they go to and from school, so I can see they’re safe. That’s a great benefit! But as Mark Twain said, “Too much of anything is bad.â€? With devices, as with most things, moderation is key. Nor are devices just a ‘young person’s problem’. I know I can get caught in the trap of staring at my phone at the end of a long day instead of spending time with my kids. A friend of mine realised there was great irony when she shared a meme on Facebook about spending too much time on phones, when that’s exactly what she was doing right then. So, how can we regulate devices in our families so that they don’t become an unhealthy addition to our homes? Here are a couple of thoughts: • Have device-free times when devices are put away so that we engage with each other. Perhaps, no devices at the dinner table; • Consider leaving your devices in a central area of the house overnight so family members aren’t left to waste valuable sleeping time on devices. This is also a good way to monitor what is being accessed on the devices. We don’t need to be worried about devices but nor should we be complacent. As the Bible says, “There is a season to everything.â€? (Ecclesiastes 3:1) and that ‘everything’ includes devices. Wisdom is to know how to define and guard those seasons. Some years ago, we went on a family holiday to the coast. At one point on the second day, my wife said to me, “You have not looked up from your phone for the last half hour.â€? What struck me about that was that we were sitting on a verandah with the beach as our view. How had I become so focused on my phone when the view of King’s Beach was on offer? So, we decided that all devices would be put away and only taken out for one hour each day. It changed the whole tone of our holiday for the better! Why not sit down as a family and work out some family guidelines together? It will be time well-spent and set healthy guidelines for your family.

Forest Lake Wasps Update by Vanessa Poskus

Our juniors have had a wonderful time of it recently, getting to do two very exciting things: a training R UGBY session with the Queensland Reds and one of our players leading the Reds onto the field as their Junior Mascot. The Wasps have been on the frontline of community events for charity, with President Vanessa Poskus taking part in Shave for a Cure and Little Stinger Malik Assoum cutting off his locks for sick kids. Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union player, Tate Duncan recently had the experience of a lifetime, winning the opportunity to be the Queensland Reds mascot for a Saturday game at Suncorp Stadium. Tate received a Reds jersey, ran on with the team and he, his brother and a teammate got to be in the bunker right near the team during the match. “It was very exciting!” Tate said, “The noise was amazing as I ran on. I think because they won, I should be the Junior Mascot every game!” But this was not the only memorable experience for the Wasps during their Easter holiday break: selected players were one of only two Brisbane teams able to enjoy an actual training session with their State heroes. Run at Ballymore stadium, the Wasps not only met the likes of Steve Moore, Quade Cooper and Karmichael Hunt, but also were able to enjoy skill drills with them and discuss the finer points of the game. Players aged U6-U9 had an absolute blast, with the word ‘awesome’ used repeatedly, but rumour has it that the Reds enjoyed it just as much! The Wasps have also been out and about in the community. I had the pleasure of joining Cr Strunk and the Forest Lake Ward team to raise money for Shave for a Cure, by getting my very long hair spray painted in Wasps’ jersey colours. And the hair theme has continued, with one of our youngest players, four year old Malik Assoum, wanting to donate the ponytail of his first hair cut for wigs for sick children. To support Malik please visit: Malik’s Everyday Hero Page. Wasps registrations remain open; we have vacancies in our Little Stingers program for 3-5 year olds, as well as our U8 and U9 teams. We are the club to be in for girls who wish to join rugby union, so get in touch with us if you’ve always wanted to try it. We are having a very competitive season, with our U8s currently undefeated. Sponsors, people with some time to spare – everyone is welcome at Forest Lake’s only local footy club for local kids.

On Tuesday May 9 the Federal Budget was handed down in Canberra. There were a number of new measures introduced by the Government which will impact residents throughout our local community. A new school funding education model was introduced, which, while it was an improvement on the Government’s last attempt, will still cut $22 billion dollars from schools over the next decade. This will particularly impact our local Catholic schools who will lose the most funding from the changes. The age to access the pension will be lifted to 70 years old meaning that Australia will have the oldest pension age in the developed world. The Energy Supplement to new pensioners, people with disability, carers and Newstart recipients will also be cut. This will mean a cut of $14.10 per fortnight to single pensioners or $365 a year and a cut of $21.20 per fortnight to couple pensioners or around $550 a year. Changes to Family Tax Benefits which will also mean that 12,000 families in the electorate will lose their $354 as a result of the abolition of the Family Tax Benefit Part B End of Year Supplement. The Medicare rebate freeze will be lifted, however, it will be a staggered process over the next two years. The freeze will remain on GP and specialist consultations until 2018 and specialist procedures and allied health services until 2019. In the week prior to the budget I was pleased to see our community come together for the Hands Off Our Services rally that I attended with Shadow Minister Jenny Macklin MP and councillor Charles Strunk. The message from locals was loud and clear that our community won’t stand by and watch as vital services remained under threat. I’m happy to report that since then the Federal Government has removed some of the remaining ‘Zombie’ measures from the 2014 budget where some community services were included in $13 billion dollars’ worth of cuts. I was pleased to speak on this in Parliament and see that our essential community services remain protected. As always, if there is ever anything I can help with, please get in touch with my office on 3879 6440 or send me an email at Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov.au. The Lake News - June 2017 - Page 23

ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N

E

Earlier this month, I was thrilled to attend the Lions Club ‘Children of Courage Awards’ presentation. It was my privilege to nominate five of our youth members for recognition of the strength of character they have displayed while enduring various burdens that have been placed upon them. Congratulations Hunter, Isaac, James, Anthony and Troy. Another Group we have started working with is the Forest Lake Girl Guides. It has been a lot of fun getting to know the leaders and girls, seeing the similarities and differences between the two youth groups, and spending a morning lashing camp gadgets together. And don’t get me started on their delicious Girl Guide biscuits - yum! Running an activity at Grand Avenue State School Under 8’s day was also loads of fun and gave us an opportunity to appreciate the hard working teachers and staff in the school. The committee had a great day at the new Forest Lake Markets, selling the sweet treats baked and donated by our parent body. We also managed to fit in some first aid training for our leaders and committee members during the month. Anyway, that’s enough about the fun the leaders have been having. Now a bit about what our youth members have been up to. We held our ceremonies night at the start of the month, and were very proud to award the Grey Wolf Award to Hunter McLaughlin. The Grey Wolf is the highest award that a cub scout can earn, and not all of them manage it as it takes a lot of perseverance and dedication to finish. We also held our annual Mother’s Dinner, where we invite all of the mothers to join us for a lovely three course meal prepared, served and cleared away by the youth members (under supervision). Our Joey Scouts visited the Camira Joeys for an afternoon making Mother’s Day craft, before hosting the Camira Joeys at our den for an afternoon of fun based on the Gold Rush theme. The two mobs will be heading out together for a fun weekend in a couple of weeks for their Gold Rush mob holiday. Following Hunter’s Grey Wolf presentation, the remainder of our cubs were all fired up to earn this award. This month they will be focused on completing their current award level. Emily, James, Christopher, Saffron and Charlie all attended our Region Cub Scout Leadership course, and prepared for the cub Grey Wolf hike this month. With the majority of our scout section being fairly new, the challenge this month was pioneering. They started out by cleaning, oiling and sharpening their saws and axes, before testing them out on some tree branches that had come down in the storms. They also practiced their Scoutcraft knots and lashings, trying their hand at constructing a chariot and a camp washstand. In a couple of weeks the Scouts will complete the requirements for their Pioneer level Construction target. They are also looking forward to their Pioneer level hike. June looks to be an exciting month for us, with many of our youth members very close to completing their current award levels. We are also very excited about our upcoming Movie Fundraiser on June 17. Join us for a relaxed morning watching the new Despicable Me 3. Tickets are only $10, with the chance to win a family pass to the movies as our lucky door prize. Please contact Dianna on 0405 965 135 for further details or to purchase tickets. This movie fundraiser is not only an opportunity to relax, it also helps to raise much needed funds to support our youth development program for young people in our community. Thank you for your support.

Recognising our local volunteers in the SES Last month, Cr Charles Strunk and staff said #thankyouSES on WOW Day by wearing orange on May 10th when Shannan Cullen, Forest Lake Ward resident was acknowledged for volunteering with the SES for a number of years. “I was delighted to hear about all the great work she has done within the Forest Lake Ward, during the Logan Floods and being presented with a badge for all the good work she did during the G20,” said Cr Strunk. “Please join me in thanking and recognising all the volunteers that continue to work tirelessly to make our ward a better place.” Page 24 - June 2017 - The Lake News

Canine Parvovirus Disease in Australia

I have seen a lot of Parvovirus Disease in the early stages of my career but in recent years very few cases around the Forest Lake area due to the vaccination program. Most dog owners have regular vaccinations in accordance with their veterinarian’s guidelines. A recent worrying report released by the Australian Veterinary Association, advises that a new form of the common and highly contagious canine parvovirus (CPV) has been discovered in Australia by researchers at the University of Adelaide. While the new strain, known as CPV-2c, is spreading around the world, until now there has been no confirmed evidence of outbreaks in Australia. However, according to the research, over the past two years, confirmed isolated cases of CPV-2c have occurred in South Australia and Victoria, with suspected cases also occurring in Queensland and Northern Territory. While more work needs to be done to understand the new strain, dog owners need to be aware that CPV-2c is now in Australia. Research has found that in most cases, in-clinic diagnostic tests have shown negative results in infected animals, making it hard to detect. Also, most of the cases reported have occurred in dogs already vaccinated against parvovirus, although the clinical signs are typically milder than in unvaccinated dogs. Until more is known, it’s important that dog owners continue to protect their pets with the current vaccine, and take their dogs to the vet if they are unwell. Signs of CPV infection include some or all of the following: decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhoea. CPV can have a high mortality rate but treatments have improved since I first encountered the disease in the late 1970’s.

Forest Lake Magpies JRLFC Update by Debra Smith

May was a busy month down at the footy club. With teams training two nights a week and games held every Sunday, we still managed to host two other events. On Friday, 19 May was the first of two NRL school game days. The second will be held on Wednesday 7 June. Our second event was the Under 7 Gala Day held on Mother’s Day. It was a huge success. These games were held early in the day before our normal round of matches for older players. We hosted 12 clubs, holding a total of 46 games on the day. There were some great performances by players. They developed some big appetites too, and our helpers in the canteen were kept busy all day. On Sunday 18 June, we will be fundraising for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Queensland (MND) to help fund care for those afflicted and research into finding a cure. We have seven games allocated to our club on that day so we expect it to be fairly busy. We will be holding a raffle to help raise funds. There will be three prizes – a 5kg box of Cadbury Favourites, a Gift Voucher from one of our sponsors (5 Star All Sports Browns Plains) and a club Jersey. The winner of the jersey can have their name and number printed on it. MND merchandise will be for sale and donation tins available. The support of the local community is welcome, and everyone is invited to attend the day, grab a coffee and a snack at the canteen, watch some great local talent and support a worthy cause. Footy doubles for each of the State of Origin matches will be available for sale in the week or two prior to each Origin game. The games are held on 31 May, 21 June and 12 July. Tickets are $2 each for a chance to win $100. If anyone is interested in tickets, please contact the club or pop down on a Sunday, buy your tickets and watch the games.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling The Club’s May game was meant to have been held at Carbrook on the 16th May, however Cyclone Debbie intervened, causing severe damage to the course and making it unplayable. Those members who were going to play were left very disappointed on missing out on their regular golfing fix. The Club’s next game will be held on the 21st June at Gainsborough Green Golf Club. This is the Club’s Annual Ambrose team event with Ccarts provided, followed by a lunch and award presentations. If you play golf and are interested in joining our club, please contact Pat on 0417 213 659. The Heritage Community Bank Branch at Forest Lake, Jindalee Golf Club Professional and the Drummond Golf Club Underwood are proud sponsors of the Forest Lake Social Golf Club Inc.
