For our second outing this year we venture to another Queensland state icon, Parliament House.

On arrival we were greeted by the people who would take us on the tour and explain about it.

Building on the current house was started in 1864 and not completed till 1889. First occupied in 1868 and at this time there was still much work to be done.

It is built of local sandstone and beautiful local timber. During its construction it suffered many setbacks. The immense library started in 1860 and was built up to house nearly 32,000 volumes on a wide variety of subjects. This collection is to this day still housed in the original shelving.

On our tour through Parliament House, we were shown many interesting points, and by sitting in the Gallery we were able to listen to the committees’ discussion.

For morning tea we were served lovely scones, jam and cream and plenty of them too, courtesy of Anthony Shorten LNP. Thank you Anthony for your ongoing support of our club.

Next stop was lunch at Souths Sports Club at Acacia Ridge. There was a variety of food and washed down with ones’ own choice of beverage and I’m sure everyone was more than satisfied.

Our trip back to Forest Lake was short on board our trusty Concorde Coach with Driver Mark, but none the less very pleasant Forest Lake 50+ Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road Richlands at 10.30am, and new members are always welcome.

Compassion fatigue is a term widely used today, and with good reason. With our 24 hour, seven days a week access to news and information, it’s easy to succumb to feeling overwhelmed.

If you are even slightly connected to social media, use the internet, watch television or, indeed, simply talk to people beyond your front door, you will know what I am talking about.

Anything and everything that happens on the other side of the world, in a neighbouring country, in our nation, in our state, in our suburb reaches our ears and eyes in a matter of minutes and we are flooded with images and words.

We try to tune out but the onslaught is unrelenting and most of us live every day, quite literally, with the weight of the world on our shoulders.

So what does the human brain do with too much information? It shuts down in order to preserve itself.

Information saturation is slowly spreading the disease of indifference in our society.

We simply cannot cope with this emotional overload every time we seek to interact with one another, so the next best thing, in order to maintain our sanity and keep from plunging into the depths of despair, is to simply stop caring.

And this, of course, does not help things at all. I am involved heavily with Destiny Rescue, as most of you probably know, and with that work comes so much information about the problem that exists today of human trafficking, an issue so large and complex that it seriously does my head in sometimes.

Sometimes, I just stay away from social media for a day or two, or I leave emails from causes I support ‘unread’ until I’m feeling a little more resilient. We need to be smart about our information age and not let it rule us. As much as we are urged to talk to the people with us instead of those behind our screens, we need to take the same lesson and apply it to ourselves - pay a little attention to how we’re feeling and adjust our habits accordingly.

So how do I combat compassion fatigue? One word fun. I make it a point to do something fun each day. And by fun, I mean something I enjoy. It might simply be pottering around in my (thanks to the raging summer) meagre garden. It might be calling one of my sisters or a friend. It might be playing a card game with the family, or simply putting my favourite music on and singing loudly.

Whatever you enjoy, try to do a little something each day where your mind and heart can take a break and you can just breathe, putting to the side all the issues and problems that surround us.

We will never rid ourselves of problems, for that is life in all its glory but we can balance our own minds so that we don’t succumb to indifference and apathy. And if we can do that, we will rally and pick up our causes and keep fighting the good fight.

If your teeth are not as straight as you would like, there are several ways modern dentistry can help. The old fashioned way is with braces. Everyone remembers them.

Welcome to April, the month we celebrate our Christian Easter and remember our fallen and returned heroes on Anzac Day. Easter is a good time to take those bulbs you had in the crisper and plant them so when summer comes, they will all be in bloom, colouring your garden with their magnificent displays.

What can I say about our recent bus trip aptly titled Gold Coast Sea and Garden Escape? A two hour trip around the waterways of the Gold Coast with so many different sights to view and photograph was thoroughly enjoyed by all. After lunch at Jupiter’s Casino, some of our party had time for a little flutter on the pokies and I do believe one couple were successful at roulette. The afternoon was spent at Gold Coast Regional Botanical Gardens. I must admit this is truly a hidden treasure on the coast. If you have not been there before, I recommend an afternoon drive will not leave you disappointed. Thanks to Jill and Heather for organizing a great day. Watch for details of our next trip on Saturday 19 July.

Last month, members voted on changing our monthly meetings to a morning meeting in lieu of our current evening meeting. Although the voting for a morning meeting was 70% in favour of a change, the problem was no clear result regarding which day to hold the meeting. As we had a temporary booking for a Tuesday, this was one of the least popular days. As this year was organised on a night meeting, we will see out 2014 as per our normal evening meetings. The new committee elected in August can plan for a popular day.

Sadly, we cannot please everyone.

Do you have any geraniums growing? There is a good chance your geranium is actually a Pelargonium! A mistake made in the 1800s when classifying these plants is still being carried on today. Nurseries are selling plants labelled as geraniums when they are pelargoniums. Make sure you receive a copy of this month’s club newsletter, aptly titled, The Good Dirt, for an interesting article on the differences between geraniums and pelargoniums.

Autumn’s a busy season in the vegetable garden. Summer crops are fading and it’s time to move on. Sow lettuce, radishes, spinach, turnips and leeks. Most can be started in pots and transplanted as the soil cools. Also you can now plant onions and garlic. Watch for pests, especially if the weather stays warm. Choose pesticides with care, making sure that they are suitable for your particular crop.

Coming up on the 26 and 27 April at the Auditorium at Mt. Coot-tha Botanic Gardens is A Garden A-Fair. This is an inert-club challenge between garden clubs in south-east Queensland. Our members have entered with some success and I’m looking forward to another strong showing from our club. Make sure you visit A Garden A-Fair to see the colourful and wonderful displays on show and not forgetting the magnificent floral art displays.

Held at Forest Lake Shopping Centre, the expo provided local community groups, clubs and charities with the opportunity to put themselves on display. Shoppers were invited to vote for their favourite exhibitor – the 50+ Club came out in front and took home the $500 prize offered by the centre.

“I’d really like to thank everyone who visited our display and supported us,” said Forest Lake 50+ Club Secretary, Glen Mostyn. “Our club members pulled together and made the display – everything was done from scratch and we think it came together really well. Other people obviously thought so too since we’ve taken home the prize.

We’ll use the money to subsidise future activities we run for our members. We’re very grateful for it and everyone will benefit.”

The Forest Lake 50+ Club was established more than 20 years ago. Today the group has grown to over 100 members.

The club aims to bring people together for social events and to support each other in times of need.

“We meet every third Friday of the month at the Lions Soccer Club and are always pleased to welcome new members,” Glen explained. “We have a day trip the first Wednesday of every month and we travel to a range of different places both near and far. We also host morning teas and lunches, there’s always a Christmas in July event and a Christmas party in December.”

“We aim to provide people with the opportunity to get out and have fun. The expo was great because it provided us with the chance to tell more people about what we do and encourage them to join. All we ask is for a $15 membership fee to be paid once a year and then for members to pay for the activities they join in with. ” Forest Lake Marketing Manager, Linda Loosley, said, “We would like to congratulate the Forest Lake 50+ Club on their win and to thank all of the other groups for coming along and putting up their displays.

Frank Manthey, the co-founder of Save the Bilby Fund is urging residents to make 2014 an Australian Bilby Easter.

“Australians will spend $157 million on chocolate this Easter. Many of these chocolates will be rabbits, which cause billions of dollars damage to the Australian environment every year. The last two years have been an up and down battle for the Save the Bilby Fund. Darrel Lea had supported the cause of the endangered bilby but, in 2012, its stores closed and the Fund lost out on the $60,000 a year they were receiving from the company. But then, last year, Pink Lady Chocolates, owned

by Fyna Foods, came to the rescue, albeit too late to secure an Easter deal with the major stores. This year that’s changed.

Big W, Myer, David Jones, selected Post Offices and some specialist chocolate shops stock the Pink Lady Chocolate bilbies. Frank Manthey is hopeful of securing big players Coles and Woolworths next year.

“We’d just urge everyone to buy a bilby and only buy chocolate bilbies with the Save the Bilby logo. That way a portion of every sale comes to the fund. The Fund receives 30 cents from the larger bilbies and 30c from a pack of ten.”

Australia has the distinction of holding one of the world’s worst records for extinctions, with 28 species of mammal alone gone forever, and it has just taken 200 years for this to happen.

Sadly, this has come about because of the things humans have done and introduced.

The Australian Bilby is severely endangered. Fossilised bilby remains have been found in North Queensland which proves that the bilby has lived in Australia for millions of years.

Despite the fact that the bilby is one of the fastest breeding mammals in the world, it has been driven close to extinction by feral cats, foxes and wild dogs. Rabbits also compete with the bilby for food and burrows.

C&K Inala Kindergarten and Community Preschool recently hosted a reunion for all the kindy children who have gone on to Prep this year.

Approximately 25 excited Prep students returned to kindy proudly wearing their school uniforms, full of stories about what they are learning at school.

Most families came with older siblings who had also attended the centre, resulting in over 100 people enjoying an afternoon of reminiscing and reliving kindy days.

The children headed straight for the sandpit, fort and swings as if they had never been away, no matter what their age.

It was such an enjoyable afternoon that many parents requested more reunions to be planned throughout the year.

Free Easter Egg Hunt at the Lake Local parents need not get up early to hide Easter eggs in the back yard this year.

The Forest Lake Uniting Church, with support from MTR Property Group and the Brisbane Lions, will be hosting a free Easter Egg Hunt event at the Lake Amphitheatre for children up to 12 years old.

Starting at 8am on Saturday April 12, the Easter Egg Hunt event will also include lolly scrambles, free raffles, colouring in competition and music.

The Forest Lake Lions club will be holding a BBQ sausage sizzle and drinks for a gold coin donation.

Walk With the Lions Join us on Sunday May 18 for a family/community charity walk around our picturesque lake to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. We are launching ‘Walk With The Lions’ project as an annual fundraising event that has the potential to raise substantial funds to be donated to a worthy cause.

The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland was chosen this year in part because of the close association it has had with Lions. In fact, it was the Lions Club of Holland Park in 1975 who initiated the formation of the Lions Leukaemia Foundation which later became the Leukaemia Foundation.

The Leukaemia Foundation is now Australia’s peak body, providing free support services for Leukaemia patients and their families and funding research into blood cancers. The Foundation has a simple motto of ‘Vision to Cure and a Mission to Care’.

Accordingly in Queensland over $1 million is invested every year in medical research projects and delivers a range of free services to patients and their families whose lives have been affected by blood cancers.

First Round of Youth of the Year (YOTY) Forest Lake 2014 YOTY contest was held on Wednesday 26th February. There were three contestants, Mattea Lazarou, Joshua Harris and Hannah Najarro. The contestants were first given two questions for which they had to make impromptu speeches of five minutes each. They fared very well in front of mainly an adult audience. Then they presented their own prepared speeches on topics of their choice. The panel of judges Marilyn Thurtell, Susannah Friis and Susan Home after much deliberation chose Joshua Harris as the winner. Joshua will now proceed to the district YOTY contest. YOTY was organised and conducted by Lion April Lindel.

Working Bee to Help a Community Member Several of our members spent two Saturdays tidying-up the garden of a community member who has been incapacitated due to a long illness. The garden was overgrown with weeds and shrubs and patios and driveways needed a good clean-up.

The owner was delighted with our team’s TLC work. The working bee was organised by Lion Sharon Hartig.

ANZAC Day Parade and S O L I C I T O R Commemorative Service Christine solman ANZAC Day is probably Australia’s most important national occasion. It is the anniversary of the landing in 1915 of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) on the beaches of Gallipoli, in the Dardanelles in north-western Turkey. It was the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The soldiers in those forces quickly became know as ANZACs, and the pride they took in that name endures today. Today, ANZAC Day commemorates the lives lost in all wars since then.

The Forest Lake RSL Sub-Branch will be holding, as usual, a commemorative march and ceremony on Friday 25 April. Assembly point for the parade is in High Street, at the rear of the Salvation Army Centre.

The Parade will step off at 9.00am and proceed down Forest Lake Boulevard to the Lake Shrine where the commemoration ceremony will commence at 9.30am.

The ceremony will take approximately 30 minutes.

The Parade and ceremony will also be well supported by local schools and the RAAF Cadet Corps. If you wish to march in the parade please contact the Secretary Peter Foley on 0412 357 756.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club Update On Sunday March 2, we played at a Golf Course that is new to the club - Mount Warren Park at Beenleigh.

A lively group of 26 players turned up for the game at this course. The course itself was dry and provided

by Peter Cuttance some good roll-on for drives on the fairway. The course offered a dog leg at almost every hole, so a lot of thought was needed Forest Social Golfin Club Update to manage the course.

Winners on the day were in A Grade Alan Corless, runner up was Andrew Baker. B Grade winner was Alistair McCosh, runner up Daryl Gore. This year, Easter and ANZAC Day fall in the same week and give us a great opportunity to remember incredible acts of self-sacrifice and courage. On one hand, we remember the willing self-sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. On the other, we remember the self-sacrifice of Jesus Christ’s Passion at Easter. Though He came from Heaven, Jesus described His own mission as, “not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45) The self-sacrificial attitude of ANZAC Day and Easter also share another point of commonality, being that both were undertaken with a view to a great purpose. Though we remember the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, we know that their tragic loss of life was given in the service of a great goal of preserving and protecting our nation and way of life. Similarly, Easter does not end with the death of Christ on Good Friday but comes to a great crescendo of victory in His Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

As members of our community, we must own the responsibility to pass on this legacy of self-sacrifice. We owe it to the memory and sacrifice of those who have gone before to make this attitude part of our community.

A verse from the Bible that is often read at both ANZAC Day services and Easter services comes from John 15:13, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” And it’s important that we pass this virtue of self-sacrifice onto the next generation. It will not always call us to give our lives on the battlefield but it can show in simple acts of local service and kindness, of generosity towards those less fortunate than us. And, it is a virtue that is, more often, “caught rather than taught.” That is, people learn it by seeing it in the actions of others, rather than in words.

Make a priority to take your family to an ANZAC Day ceremony this year - head along to the RSL service at the Lake Amphitheatre to honour the sacrifice of our servicepeople and to pass that legacy to the next generation.

Also, you’re welcome to join with the Churches in Forest Lake this Easter to honour the sacrifice offered by Jesus Christ at Easter.

Brisbane 2 Ipswich Challenge on again

The Brisbane 2 Ipswich (B2I) Bike Challenge is back for its 13th year and is projected to be the biggest and best yet.

This year, the ride will be held on the 18th of May with cyclists travelling from Brisbane CBD through Springfield, the Ripley Valley en route to Ipswich. Upon reaching Ipswich, participants are able to relax and enjoy the finishing festival where they will be treated to entertainment and a range of other activities.

This is the only mass participation bike ride between Brisbane and Ipswich and is continually growing with the rapid development of the local region.

The ride attracts participants from all over South East Queensland who are keen to challenge themselves to ride the distance and also to raise much needed funds for the Ipswich Hospital Foundation and the 24/7 Cycling Safety Fund.

Whether you ride a mountain bike, a BMX bike or even a penny farthing, you are encouraged to join in the fun as riders of all levels and ages can participate.

The 2014 B2I will take on a new look with the Ipswich Hospital Foundation as the principal organiser and beneficiary.

Let’s assume the following facts for Graham and Clare: • They have a mortgage on their principal residence for which the interest rate is 5.50%.

• Graham is a sales manager and uses his car 90% of the time for work. He recently purchased a new vehicle with a personal loan charging 8.00%. His marginal rate of tax is 38.5% including the Medicare levy.

• Graham and Clare have a jointly owned investment property and the interest rate is 6.00%.

Clare’s marginal rate of tax is 20.5%.

• Graham has a credit card with a small outstanding balance on which he is paying 20.00%.

They have some spare cash after paying the minimum amounts required on the various loans and would like to know where the additional cash should be allocated. Clearly, payment of the credit card should take priority. There is no tax deductibility and so the after tax rate earned by reducing the debt is 20.00%. Once the credit card is paid, one might assume that further cash surpluses be first allocated to the personal loan, then the investment property loan and finally the home loan. However, let’s look at the after tax return from paying these loans: • The after tax rate on the home loan is 5.50%.

• Graham can claim 90% of the interest on the car as relating to his work. The interest deduction results in a tax reduction of 38.5%. After tax the interest rate is effectively 5.23% (8.00% less (8.00% * 90% *38.5%)) which is less than the home loan.

• The combined marginal rate of tax for the investment loan is 29.5% and interest is fully deductible. The after tax interest rate is therefore 4.23% (6.00% * (100% - 29.5%)).

The personal loan may, prima facie, incur a higher rate of interest. However, looking at the after tax rate ensures we are not comparing apples with oranges and perhaps drawing a wrong conclusion.

I would like to acknowledge the efforts by Friends of the Park in making our local community a better place. In the Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Awards, Friends of the Park was awarded the Green Heart Organisation Award.

Co-ordinator, Lorraine Salisbury, was on hand to receive this award on behalf of the many volunteers who dedicated so much of their spare time. The efforts of Friends of the Park were also noted in 2010 when Forest Lake was awarded Spotless Suburb. Thank you to all who volunteer with Friends of the Park - you do a wonderful job.

This month on 25 April we once again will take time to remember the sacrifices of many men and women who secured the freedom we have today. It is also an opportunity to show our support to those who currently serve in our Defence Services.

I look forward to sharing this day with many residents at multiple ceremonies throughout Parkinson Ward and I encourage new residents to attend the service at our Brisbane City Council parklands at the Amphitheatre (off The Esplanade). A fantastic day was had on 15 March at the official launch of the 2014 Rugby Union season at the Forest Lake District Sporting Facility with The Wasps.

I am pleased to announce the new field irrigation system has been installed by Brisbane City Council to enhance the playing surface. This junior club is growing from strength to strength and is certainly putting the sting back into Rugby. As Patron of The Wasps I encourage local children interested in Rugby Union to make contact with and join this locally based club.

Swim season draws to an end As another swim season draws to a close, swimmers of The Lake’s Swimming Club will celebrate the 2013/14 season with a fun night on April 4, ahead of the AGM in May. The AGM will be a night of food, cake, certificates, photos from the season and ending with prizes and trophies presented to all swimming members.

The club, run by volunteer parents who participate as much as possible so that the club can run at its capacity of 60 members, is based at the Sam Riley Swim School, corner of Forest Lake Boulevard and High Street and meets every Friday night during terms one and four of each school year.

We are now a quarter of the way into 2014 and it looks like it is set to be a very busy year. It gives me great joy to represent the Algester Electorate and meet with residents to hear their views or assist them in any way I can. Again I extend an invite for any residents who have a query, concern or view to contact my office as I am always happy to hear from you, and March has proven to be a month of residents taking up my offer.

As mentioned in my column last month, through Great Results Guarantee funding, Grand Avenue State School received $378,000. I think it’s very important to communicate how this significant investment will benefit our children.

In consultation with the P&C, the following strategies have been agreed on: • employ a full-time P-2 Maths Coach, purchase support resources; • employ a Reading Coach two days a week, purchase support resources; • employ a teacher to undertake Early Start data gathering – 32 TRS days; • release P-2 class teachers to engage in data analysis and target responses; • purchase teacher aide hours to support identified P-2 students; • implement P-2 Oral Language program.

Research shows that early years intervention is the key to maximising the progress of students at each stage of learning. I applaud the hard working teachers and support staff at Grand Avenue State School and believe the children will benefit greatly from this significant investment in our schools.

Another highlight from March was the Cinema in the Suburbs held in Heathwood Park, where hundreds turned out to enjoy the free movie and support local community groups. The night was an outstanding success for Pallara State School P&C who raised over $1100 with their BBQ and the Heathwood Neighbourhood Watch who raised enough money to help pay for their Easter Egg Hunt again this year.

Foster and Kinship Carer Week was also celebrated 9 to 15 March. This is a celebration of the dedication and commitment of Queensland’s foster and kinship carers who provide children and young people with a safe, loving and stable home. I was delighted to be able to show my support for Foster and Kinship Carers by signing the open letter of thanks.

I was honoured to meet with the Forest Lake 50+ Club on their recent tour of Parliament House; it was great to share a cup of tea and a scone with them. In speaking to a few of the members, they expressed how delighted they were to have the opportunity to see the workings of Parliament.

The Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch Anzac Day Ceremony on 25th April will commemorate the beginning of the Anzac Centenary. This year marks 100 years since our involvement in the First World War. I look forward to joining many residents at the Service to remember our fallen soldiers.

Focusing our attention on the Millennium Goals to eradicate poverty in the third world, Paul showed how businesses could give generously to this cause by making connections within teams, with customers and with the world in which we live. His Singaporean company B1G1 (Buy 1GIVE1) works with businesses all over the world encouraging them to be a business with the “WOW” factor.

Young business entrepreneur Robert Hruswicki, a St John’s student who has recently established his own on-line business in personalized mobile phone covers was certainly inspired when Paul offered to mentor his business to become a Buy1GIVE1 champion.

Many St John’s students go on to study in business related fields at university and TAFE and successfully establish careers or their own businesses. Old Collegians Awardees in 2013, Tony Nyguen and Siegmund Mitterstoger are fine and inspiring role models for our students as innovative thinkers who run inspiring businesses.

At St John’s our Balance Life Program for students in Year Seven to 10 helps to raise awareness of the needs of others, develops a culture of spirituality, and inspires a sense of empathy and responsibility towards all members of the community. It builds important relationships with the wider community.

April’s meeting is Wednesday 9th April (second Wednesday of the month) at Settlers Village, 41 High Street, Forest Lake, 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Parking available at Salvation Army and on High Street.

Many thanks to the Management of the Forest Lake Shopping Centre for National Seniors being selected to participate in the Spirit of the Lake awards for 2014. Members put together a professional stand for the public which we were very proud of especially as it encapsulated the uniqueness of our special suburb.

St Patrick’s Day was well and truly celebrated by our members and visitors in March. Green, green everywhere and everyone in great spirits. Terry’s Irish jokes during the meeting were just so funny. What a character. A delicious and very green morning tea was followed by an entertaining Mike Kregor with some terrific Irish numbers and more. Lots of toe tapping and a chance to join in singing along to some well known songs. Many thanks to Councillor Milton Dick and his hard working staff for providing a huge unique green raffle major prize for the day.

Due to popular demand from members, there will be a special guest speaker at April’s meeting. You will not want to miss this one so come along and be entertained and informed.

First bus trip for 2014 was the tour of Brisbane “Unders and Overs” travelling through tunnels and over bridges

and including morning tea and lunch. Such a great outing.

Lunch at Brothers, Grange. A first time visit for many of our travellers. What an amazing and beautiful City we have and this was a fantastic way to see the sights.

On the same day President Dan and a small number of our members attended a very important meeting in the city concerning end of life issues for seniors. This was a very informative meeting organised by head office with a high calibre panel of speakers.

Members had many laughs with the Barefoot Bowls and BBQ held on March 29th at the Jindalee Bowls Club. Not sure whether it is true or not, but it seems Jindalee Bowls Club wants to have serious discussions with some of our members about playing with the club.

Coming up this month on Wednesday the 16th April is our lunch outing to the Blue Fin Club in Inala which is not far to travel and there is something for everyone on the Club’s very extensive menu. Bookings for the event will be taken at our Branch Meeting on Wednesday 9th April.

In May, we have a wonderful trip planned to visit a beautiful historical homestead including morning tea and lunch on Thursday, May 22nd. Bookings and deposits for this trip will be taken at our Branch Meeting on Wednesday 9th April.

Four friends from the Forest Lake community have registered as a team to hike the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge.

On the weekend of 19-20 July, Gary, Melissa, Loris and Sarah will be treking in Australia’s toughest endurance event – The Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge.

96km course that encompasses more than 5000 metres of elevation and 12 creek crossings through the Gold Coast Hinterland within the time limit of 39 hours. And there is a good reason behind this distance and time - 96km is the length of the actual Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea and the 39 hour time limit is in honour of the 39th Militia, the first Australian Troops to set foot on the Kokoda Track.

In addition to the physical challenge of the trekking event itself, teams are required to take up the challenge of raising funds for the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP) & by seeking sponsorship and support. All funds raised go to youth programs, supporting local young people.

The KCYP is a 14 month early intervention program is helping young people from a variety of backgrounds to gain confidence, direction, new friends and the skills to overcome any obstacles that life throws at them.

The Lions Club of Forest Lake are also offering a fantastic opportunity to work off those chocolate Easter eggs next month, organising an inaugural charity walk to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland. The event will take place on Sunday 18 May and will make full use of the picturesque lake and Forest Lake scenery. The walk will also be a celebration of the club’s 20th Anniversary, so come along and join me for some fun and a fantastic chance to support a worthy cause.

Finally it gives me great pride in acknowledging the students from St Johns College who were contestants at the Forest Lake Lions’ Youth of the Year competition this year.

Joshua Harris was selected from a pool of incredibly talented candidates, and is someone truly worthy of the honour.

Snake bites and your pets

Snake bites are a relatively common occurrence in regional areas of Australia. Around Forest Lake, Brown and Red Belly Black snake envenomation are by far the most common.

There are a number of signs which are typical of snake bites and, if observed, should be followed by prompt attention.

In the vast majority of snake bites, evidence of a bite wound is absent. Clinical signs observed are largely dependant on the species of snake as well as the dose and potency of venom delivered in the bite. Similarly, the clinical course of signs is also variable.

Dogs often show initial signs of transient collapse, salivation and vomiting that can be missed by owners. These signs may be followed by a seemingly spontaneous recovery.

However, the presence of these signs almost invariably means the patient has received a lethal dose of venom, with patients usually deteriorating with weakness, ataxia and urinating blood within hours.

In contrast, cats rarely display any initial signs, with the earliest signs usually being weakness and ataxia.

Your pet should be checked if you: • observe a snake attack incident; • find a dead snake in the yard – please bring in dead snakes for identification; • observe collapse, weakness, ataxia and urinating blood.

Snake bites are largely diagnosed on suspicion given the presence of signs suggestive of a bite. Blood samples to assess clotting times and kidney function and urine tests are also helpful in determining if a bite is likely, as well as the severity of the bite, but are not specific for snake bites. Venom detection kits are available to identify the correct venom.

Treatment of snake bites revolves around prompt administration of antivenin and supportive care.

Intravenous fluids, antihistamines, adrenaline and respiratory support with oxygen, may all be necessary if supportive therapy is to be successful. Hospitalisation for a minimum of 24 hours is usually necessary to ensure adequate monitoring and treatment.

Snake bites should always be given a guarded prognosis as many complications can occur, but generally, treatment outcome is significantly improved if the animal is hospitalised and antivenin is administered promptly.

Easter chocolate can prove fatal With chocolate in abundance over the Easter period, our pets are at increased risk of poisoning, warns RSPCA Qld. Just 50g of chocolate can be toxic and kill a dog.

Despite the danger, chocolate is highly palatable and often irresistible to both dogs and cats.

RSPCA Qld’s Senior Veterinarian, Dr Anne Chester, says cats and dogs can go to great lengths to seek out chocolate and warns people to keep their trays of Easter eggs out of reach of opportunistic pets.

“The problem is that the internal systems of cats and dogs cannot tolerate theobromine, one of the key ingredients of chocolate,” Dr Chester said.

“Theobromine can cause a range of problems in domestic animals because it triggers the release of adrenaline, which can lead to a greatly accelerated heart rate and an irregular heartbeat.

“A pet can vomit, suffer diarrhoea and excessive urination and become hyperactive.

This can be followed by depression, coma, seizures and death.”

With most pets considered part of the family, there’s a quite normal inclination to share food with the family pet.

Probus Club Update

It was one of those typical summer days, hot and humid with threatening cumulus clouds. The Probus Club was scheduled to take a trip with River City Cruises and members had to find their own transport to South Bank. En route, the heavens opened but fortunately by the time we had to board MV Neptune the rain had abated. Once on board Devonshire tea was served and members enjoyed the interesting and informative commentary delivered by the Captain as we cruised along to Bulimba.

Along the route certain landmarks, beautiful homes and flood peak levels with their relevant histories, were pointed out. Working barges and plenty of construction was evident as work was still in progress to heal the after effects of an earlier flood. There was some relief from the humidity as members enjoyed a cool breeze on board. Upon disembarkation some Probians headed for a ride on the Brisbane Wheel while others opted for sustenance at a wide choice of restaurants.

There was no speaker for March as it was the Annual General Meeting and thus changing of the guard time.

Committee members give up some of their free time to help the Club function and provide a service. The monthly Committee Meetings are held at the home of the President and this also includes morning tea. It takes a special kind of person who does not mind his/ her home being “invaded”.

Probus is part of the Rotary family whose motto is “Service above self” and although we do not raise funds any more, we still are part of this wonderful organization. It is important for us to put aside our selfishness and our own self-centredness and help others to feel appreciated and give credit when due.

To be conscious of others and show gratitude can only help to prevent people of becoming victims of “Beyond Blue” and contribute to a more positive approach to life. Thank you Alan Johnson for being such an understanding and compassionate President!
