The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club’s March outing was a day trip to the Brisbane Valley Ostrich and Fish Farm at Esk. Patti Jaenke from the Farm provided a delicious Devonshire Tea and a very informative talk on the history of the farm for our members. The farm had a well-stocked dam with several varieties of fresh water fish, safely guarded by Patti’s Blue Healer Cattle Dog. Several members were given the opportunity to apply their fishing skills, with the successful anglers kissing and releasing their catch in true Rex Hunt style. From the fishponds we made our way over to the Ostrich and Emu paddock, with Patti giving us a talk on the behaviour of the African Ostrich compared to the Australian Emu. Those brave enough were given the opportunity to feed the hungry birds, with all surviving with their limbs in tact. After leaving the farm, we made our way back to Lake Wivenhoe where we had a picnic lunch provided by the club, followed by a relaxing few hours with a glass or two of wine. All good things must come to an end, and it was time to make our way back home, but not before stopping at the Old Fernvale Bakery, where a number of members purchased the famous Fernvale pies, with their mouth watering aroma following us all the way home. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club is proudly sponsored by the Forest Lake Heritage Community Bank. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands, 10.30am sign in for an 11.00am start. Please note the change in time. Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis I’ve been thinking a lot about noise lately. Noise has the ability to calm by way of relaxing music or a soothing voice; it can startle eg a loud unexpected bang; it can irritate like a barking dog or dripping tap. Our relationship with noise is dependent on our mood usually. I have memories of my mother saying, usually towards the end of the long Christmas school holidays, that she just needed some ‘quiet’, and now I find myself saying a similar thing! It was interesting to note that the dictionary definition of noise included this: Informal. extraneous, irrelevant, or meaningless facts, information, statistics, etc. There is so much more of this type of noise these days, isn’t there? I find increasingly that when I feel I need some quiet, I’m hankering to escape the ‘noise’ of the world; to take myself off where there is no internet connection and no traffic or people. We are bombarded with noise now. Our inboxes are filled with ‘noise’ - extraneous, irrelevant, meaningless facts and information. Our social media sites, as well as giving us updates on our friends, also deals out an unhealthy amount of noise. And, for me, anyway, that noise can be so loud that it drowns out the noise we do want to hear. We get so used to the white noise filling our heads that we miss out on other important sounds. We miss the sound of a friend, desperate for connection because we end up skimming our facebook newsfeed due to all the other noise. We miss the sound of our children, begging us to play, to notice them, to really see them, in the midst of our phones pinging and beeping with emails and text messages. And we miss the sound of our own souls screaming for attention in a world noisy with spiritual options, self-help mantras and conflicting dogma. We are so overcome with noise that we miss the most important sounds of all. It’s a challenge to listen when so much noise surrounds us. It’s hard to decipher the sounds we should listen to and the sounds we should ignore. But, it is possible. It just may take some decision making, followed up with some discipline. At the beginning of the year, I ‘unsubscribed’ from many newsletters, blogs and websites. There was nothing wrong, per se, with those things, it was simply too much noise. And you know what, I haven’t missed them! Not one bit. In fact, it’s been quite the opposite. I can feel myself mentally exhaling in relief that my inbox is now uncluttered and ‘less’ than it used to be. And that’s just a start. I’ve been paring down in other ways too - picking my phone up less, turning the TV on less, checking facebook less. As a result, I’m thinking more, connecting more, reading more enjoying more! That old maxim really is true - less is more. Is there too much noise in your life? What sounds are you missing out on because of it? Maybe it’s time to start tuning in to what really matters and tuning out the rest.

Your Teeth Your Smile by Dr Paul Holliday Straight teeth but without braces or wires If your teeth are not as straight as you would like, there are several ways modern dentistry can help. The old fashioned way is with braces. Everyone remembers them. If you had them you probably suffered through taunts of railroad track mouth or something similar. Nowadays modern technology can help. A new method of straightening teeth with clear plastic aligners has been helping people who want straight teeth but don’t want to wear braces or don’t want everyone to know they are going through any treatment. The company that supplies these products to the dental profession is called Invisalign®. If you want to see more information about the company their website is www.invisalign.com. So what is Invisalign®? It is a series of clear aligners that are custom moulded to fit your teeth and mouth. The virtually invisible aligners gradually move your teeth into a better position. There are no metal wires or bands to irritate your mouth, and best of all, most people won’t notice you’re in treatment. Invisalign®, the clear alternative to braces, has been chosen by nearly half a million people worldwide. They are not fixed in your mouth like braces but removable which makes cleaning easier. Every 2 weeks you need to change aligners so your teeth move little by little. Visits to the dentist are about every four to six weeks. Is Invisalign® for you? The Invisalign® system can help lots of people improve their smile but, like everything, is not designed to cater for every situation. It works best for crowding or mild spacing, overbites or cross bites. You really need to see an accredited Invisalign® provider to assess if it can help you. Some people may need a combination of Invisalign® along with other orthodontic treatment. If you aren’t interested in straightening your teeth or you aren’t concerned about having metal wires and braces in your mouth, then Invisalign® is probably not for you. If you want straighter teeth and don’t want most people to know you are even going through treatment then it may be perfect for you. It looks good but how do you get started? The first step is to talk to a certified Invisalign® provider to evaluate your teeth, gums and mouth and work out a treatment plan. Records need to be taken to determine the most effective plan and these include x-rays, photos, moulds or impressions of your teeth. These days a special scanner is used to take impressions of your teeth and gums. Then your aligners are created via precision computer mapping and design and once they arrive back you are ready to smile. Call Lakedental on 3879 8999 to organise a consultation with Dr Holliday who has been a certified Invisalign® provider for almost 10 years.

Some of you may recall the story of the frog in a jar of water which is gradually being boiled. The frog thinks this is quite comfortable with the water temperature nice and warm and has no compelling reason to jump out. Of course, eventually the water starts to boil and it is too late for the poor frog. A little change here and there is often overlooked; it is only when we view all of the changes together that we think “How did all that happen?” Various changes to the taxation principles for all things medical over the past few years have been a bit like that. If they had all been introduced at once there would have been a massive outcry; small changes year by year, whilst annoying, sometimes don’t raise much attention. Over the past few years a number of changes have occurred: • In 2013-14 you were not able to claim a medical expenses offset (except in limited circumstances), unless you had claimed it in your 2012-13 return. If you weren’t able to claim in 2013-14 for this reason, guess what, you’ll never be able to claim it again. • Even if you are able to claim the offset, the percentage claimable and the threshold to be reached before claiming, has changed for higher income earners. • With effect from the 2014-15 financial year the Medicare levy becomes 2%; previously it was 1.5%. Of course, this is built into the PAYG Tax Tables so we probably don’t notice the extra 0.5% that much on a weekly or fortnightly basis. • The Medicare Levy Surcharge used to be 1% for people above a particular income threshold without private hospital cover. The income test still applies, but there are now three tranches with rates of 1%, 1.25% and 1.5%. • The 30% private health insurance rebate is now income tested and for certain income levels it is actually 0%. Furthermore, additional changes mean that the maximum rebate is now slightly less than 30%. The above only deals with medical issues. Detailing all the changes to superannuation over the past few years would require many more pages. Sadly, the government cannot help itself when it comes to tinkering with the couple of trillion dollars that is invested for our financial future. I wonder what changes the next Federal Budget will bring!

We are located in Grand Boulevard Shopping Centre Forest Lake resident, Mal Farrow, is inspired to push himself and participate in this years Peaks Challenge, held in August, in honour of his beloved auntie. The Peaks Challenge is a bike ride covering 235km of the Gold Coast Hinterland and has a time limit of 12 hours. Mal will be using this ride to raise money for the Cancer Council and you can be a part of his fundraising endeavour. Forest Lake Fitness are helping Mal train for the event, known as one of the top ten hardest single day cycling events in the world, with fitness instructor Kyandra setting him a rigorous training regime. In a further show of support, Forest Lake Fitness will be holding an event, ‘The King and Queen of the Revs’, over the month of April. Prizes will be offered to the most frequent male and female attendees to the Revs classes. To be eligible, entrants must donate towards the charity event and show proof of their donation. This can be made online by going to http://sa.cancercouncilfundraising.org. au/MalsPeaksChallenge or cash deposits. Donations online are tax deductible. Other Forest Lake businesses, such as Studio De Velo, Diamantes Brasserie and Ray White Forest Lake, have committed to supporting the event by way of sponsorship or prize donation. While Mal’s body is subjected to the gruelling ride, his mind will be on his inspiration; his auntie who passed away from cancer in 2013 aged just 47. “Nearly every opportunity that presents itself that can be used to raise money for cancer research, I seize,” said Mal. “The Peaks challenge is the hardest event I will have ever participated in, but in my mind up to 12 hours of pain compared to what these people with cancer go through; it’s a small sacrifice. “I would like to sincerely thank the following people for their support in my biggest challenge yet: my partner Sally, thank you in so many ways; Kyandra, for your support and going above and beyond; Mick and Kev, for helping me train and being great mates; the Forest Lake Fitness Team; Studio De Velo and Diamantes Brasserie. Thank you all, deeply, it means so much.” If you’re interested in participating in ‘The King and Queen of the Revs’ event after donating to Mal’s Peaks Challenge, Forest Lake Fitness can be contacted on 3279 9450.

Her life was centred around her family – Jack, her late husband, her two children, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was a quiet achiever who believed her greatest legacy was her family. In her fifties, when Jack became very ill, she secretly took driving lessons. When she passed the test, she left her licence on the bench for the family to find – and it was a manual licence! Other than her family, her life long passion was for her craft. Her earliest project (still in her possession) was dated 1940 when she completed when she was just seven years old. She shared her love of craft with her children and grandchildren but her great grandchildren, whom she was teaching, were proving her most eager pupils. It was her desire to share her love of craft with others that led Grace to become one of the three founding members of the Forest Lake Crafters’ Group which meets each Friday morning at the Community Centre. At their first meeting on 11th April, 1997, Grace became the group’s secretary, a role she held until her death. She thoroughly enjoyed planning outings and sourcing guest tutors. Best of all was the camaraderie of the group she had helped create. Her extensive knowledge of many crafts, such as knitting, crochet, paper tole, card making and quilling, meant she was able to teach and help everyone with their projects. Grace also made the most intricate beaded dolls. The three she decided to make for her children evolved into around 40 over her lifetime. Grace was a regular attendee over the years through many illnesses until mid January this year. Her ready smile and the twinkle in her eye were always present and she made everyone feel very welcome. She was known for her jokes and sense of fun even when she was unwell. Grace will be sadly missed by her loving family and her craft group friends.

Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Happy Easter to all in our community. April is such an important month for many reasons. This year ANZAC Day will be of significant importance to all Australians. “The ANZAC Centenary will be one of the most significant commemorations to take place in our lifetimes. It will be a time to honour and reflect upon the service and sacrifice of all those who have worn our nation’s uniform - past and present.” Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, AC, AFC (Ret’d). On 25 April 2015 we mark the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. Services will take place right around our country and overseas. For those who have gone before, and those serving overseas now, lest we forget. At our March meeting we had great fun celebrating St Patrick’s Day. St Patrick’s Day is celebrated every year on March 17 around the world with colourful parades, special foods and a whole lot of green. About 30 percent of Australians are believed to have some Irish ancestry today. Plenty of people wore something green and everyone was in great spirits at our meeting. Of course, a couple of Irish jokes were shared. Mike Kregor entertained with some well loved Irish numbers and more. A special thank you to Councillor Milton Dick and his dedicated staff who enjoyed putting together a uniquely Irish raffle prize for us. Meeting date for April is Wednesday 8th. Meeting Place - Lions Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands. (Second Wednesday of the month) 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Meeting entry includes morning tea. Our guest speaker is very well known and our discussion centres on the book The Mayne Inheritance, a non-fiction book written by Queensland author Rosamond Siemon. Please join us for an interesting experience and find out some intriguing information on our great city. Also this month there are many opportunities for all to enjoy, starting with Coffee Morning at The Coffee Club on Wed 1st, a backstage QPAC tour and TAFE lunch on Thurs 16th, a free BBQ fun day for members at The Lake on April 23rd and finally a Ladies & Men’s Day out in the city on 30 April. To our members who are unwell especially our very unique Coral, we extend our very best wishes for a return to good health. A warm and friendly welcome to our meetings awaits ladies and gentlemen in the 50 something age group. There are many, many benefits of membership with National Seniors and the yearly membership fee is very affordable. For further information about our Branch please contact either Julie 3278 7274 or Val 3372 4405.

Councillor for Parkinson Ward, Cr Angela Owen-Taylor has advised that the road widening project for Stapylton Road, Heathwood (between Wadeville Street and the Logan Motorway) will commence this month. “This road widening upgrade will deliver better traffic flow for residents of Heathwood, and as well as increased pedestrian capacity,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. “As part of this project, footpaths will be installed on both sides of Stapylton Road, permitting residents improved access to local bus stops. “It will involve upgrading Stapylton Road to four lanes between Wadeville Street and the north side connection to the Logan Motorway, with provision to upgrade to six lanes in the future.” On-road bike lanes will connect to the existing on-road bike lanes on Blunder Road to the north. The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Brisbane City Council. The upgrade will include providing an upgraded four lane, median divided carriageway, upgrading the intersection at Sanctuary Drive, Parkwood Drive and Stapylton Road, providing on-road bicycle lanes, providing pedestrian footpaths on both sides of the road between Wadeville Street and the Logan Motorway, and providing four indented bus bays to cater to future public transport “It is anticipated the construction process will commence before the end of April, with the expectation the project upgrade will be completed by December 2015 weather permitting. “This section of road completes the connectivity between Logan Motorway and the Ipswich Motorway and provides a direct suburban corridor north-south link. “The direct investment of $18.1m in this suburban road project is part of this Administration’s commitment to better roads for Brisbane and making our City more accessible for residents.” Work will be undertaken from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Some weekend and after-hours work may be required. Traffic controllers will be on-site when required during construction to ensure a safe road environment for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. “Residents have conveyed to me their appreciation of the safety and traffic flow improvements for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians” concluded Cr Angela Owen-Taylor.

Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Branch has proven that persistence reaps great rewards. The Branch recently scored recognition as a finalist in the Team of the Year category in Heritage Bank’s prestigious annual awards. Forest Lake Community Branch won plaudits for its stellar achievements in 2014, which included winning Branch of the Month, being named one of Heritage’s ‘Most Improved Branches’ and finishing number one in its region for two product campaigns. Making the recognition even more special, Forest Lake Community Branch was the only team from Heritage’s 61 Queensland branches to be selected as a finalist. Branch Manager Mark Newman said he was extremely proud of the team and what they had achieved. “The team has worked exceptionally hard to support our community and give our customers the high level of service they deserve,” Mr Newman said. “We have a strong drive and passion to support our community and look for every opportunity to do our part and get involved where we can.” The Heritage Forest Lake Community Branch is a joint venture partnership between Heritage Bank and the local community, represented by Forest Lake One Community. “Heritage established the Forest Lake Community Branch in partnership with Forest Lake One Community to make sure the people of this community had access to high-quality banking services right here in Forest Lake,” Mr Newman said. “As a community branch, 60 percent of the branch’s profits goes back to Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs in the form of grants to deserving local causes. This includes schools, churches and other not-for-profit organisations, as well as community events and activities. “Our Community Branch model provides a win-win for the community. Not only does Heritage give people access to fantastic banking products and services, but the more people do their banking here, the more money we can return to the community through these funding grants.” In the last eighteen months, 21 local community groups have shared in $102,000 from Forest Lake community funding grants. These have included various projects such as a playground for the special education unit at the Forest Lake State School, an awning at the Inala PCYC Men’s Shed, a computer for Forest Lake Seniors and the annual Christmas Carols event.

Cat fights can occur in any area but our surgery sees a lot of cat fight injuries in Forest Lake. This may be due to the population of Forest Lake and the high pet ownership in the area. Fighting is more common when new residents come to Forest Lake with their cats or if residents acquire a new cat. Inside every cuddly kitty there may be a ferocious, territorial lion! The good news is that not all cats fight. The following points are suggestions on how to minimise fighting between your cats: • Tom Cats will fight more and will roam into other cat’s territory regularly. All male cats should be desexed at five to six months of age before these patterns develop. • Cats are nocturnal and are naturally more aggressive at night. Keeping cats in at night, or all the time, is a simple way of preventing contact with other cats (and other dangers). Cat enclosures are also a good idea if practical. • Some cats (even female cats) are more aggressive than others. Behaviour modifying drugs can be used to reduce uncontrollable aggression. Should your cat get into a fight, despite taking all the above precautions, you should consider the following problems that can occur. Cats inflict deep wounds by biting with their canines. These wounds are not obvious as they are punctures and can be hidden by hair. They will normally cause severe abscesses as soon as 24 hours after the fight, or longer depending on the type of germ in the wound. If your cat is in pain, is cranky or has obvious wounds, veterinary attention should be sought and antibiotic treatment started. Scratches from razor sharp claws rarely get infected, but eye damage can occur. If you do not notice a wound or an early abscess developing, pain, swelling and illness will become apparent over a few days and sometimes large areas of skin will lift off. If your cat is a chronic fighter and begins to lose weight and suffer declining health, a FIV (Cat AIDS) test should be requested. If your cat has to live outside, a FIV vaccination is now available for protection. For more information on any of these points, please contact your local vet.

WASP’s flying high in 2015 by Vanessa Poskus, Communications Officer, WASP’s. Though there were challenges to overcome in 2014, the Forest Lake WASPs Junior Rugby Union Club is already powering forward in 2015. One of the few junior rugby union clubs in Brisbane able to field a full U16 side, there are close to two teams in the U7s and sign ons in the U6s were the best they have been for years, ensuring a strong future for the local club. After a lot of groundwork by the club in partnership with Brisbane City Council, the ovals are now officially named the ‘Forest Lake Sports Fields’. This will greatly benefit all users of the grounds, as the name will now literally put them on the digital map. The other exciting news, to benefit both the WASP’s and Little Athletics, is that Heritage Bank Forest Lake have granted funds for the purchase of lights, making night time training and competition possible. The WASP’s are grateful to Heritage Bank Forest Lake for their generous support. Other football codes, sporting clubs and fitness organizations look set to reap the benefits of these developments, as moves are underway to lease the grounds at reasonable cost, thus ensuring the ‘Forest Lake Sports Fields’ truly reflect their name. This will also help the WASP’s to continue to rebuild after the arson attack last year. With all repairs to the clubhouse completed, Sunday grading trials have already commenced and the first games will start after Easter. The Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club is sure living up to its moniker, the mighty WASP’s! Players are still welcome to sign on, especially in U8, U10 & U13. Registrations are great value at $225 for the season, which entitles every player to a training and playing jersey, shorts, socks, football and backpack. Visit www.forestlakewasps.com.au for the link to register online, make enquiries and find out more information. It is not too late for sponsors from local businesses to be a part of all that is happening, with advertising options including handrails and water tanks still available. If you would like to sponsor the WASP’s please contact Richard Grimshaw on 0407 790 497 for a sponsor pack.

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR OXLEY
This April, we will come together as we do each year to commemorate one of the most significant events in our national calendar. On the 25th of April, 100 years ago, Australian and New Zealand Soldiers landed on a small beach on the Galipolli Peninsula in Turkey. Many of these men were only teenagers at the time, some as young as 16 years of age. These were not professional soldiers, nor a battle hardened army; these were volunteers who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom and quality of life we enjoy today. It is important to also acknowledge all current and former members of our defence forces for being the brave and resilient representatives of our country every day. Those currently serving, those lost in training, on operation, the wounded, injured and ill. It is important to acknowledge each and every one of the members, regardless of the time they served. The spirit of ANZAC is as relevant to us all today as it was 100 years ago. We will come together on this occasion to remember the ANZAC’s, their achievements and losses and not to glorify war or to praise victory but to appreciate how our history has derived from their self-sacrifice. It is important for our younger generations to be involved in these commemorations so they may be able to appreciate the peace and freedom we relish today came at the ultimate price. Please join your local community at a ceremony this ANZAC Day, Sunday 25th of April to help commemorate the spirit of ANZAC.

With Easter only a few days away, it is important during this time that we think about road safety as many of us take the Easter long weekend off to visit family and friends. It was my pleasure to attend the induction of the Forest Lake State School Captains and Leaders assembly. I was honoured to present the new School Captain’s with their badges and meet their very proud parents. I was impressed with the way the School Captains spoke and conducted their part of the assembly. It is inspiring to see the way Principal John Faragher and his team create an environment that nurtures academic and social outcomes of which our community can be proud. The hard work by P&C President Margy Nightingale and her Committee making resources available to support the school and its programs is also commendable. On 25 April Australia will commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC – 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War. This historic ANZAC Day will see our local community come together and pay tribute to the first ANZAC’s and to all the brave servicemen and women who have since followed in their footsteps. I encourage Forest Lake residents to make an extra effort this year to commemorate this special anniversary. If you have any questions or problems, you are always welcome to call my office on 3372 3207 or e-mail inala@ parliament.qld.gov.au.

During March St John’s staff and students, in partnership with Queensland University of Technology, invited students from high schools in the community to a STEM Event. The Event was held in the St John’s Auditorium. It welcomed over 90 high achieving Year 10 and 11 students. The students were able to experience some of the challenges engineers face in their work and to hear from the Director of a top Australian engineering firm. QUT student ambassadors, under the direction of the QUT STIMulate Coordinator Mr Ian Lightbody, conducted interactive workshops for the students. One was the Marshmallow Challenge where teams of students competed to build the highest structure out of spaghetti and string, to support a marshmallow. Another was the LittleBits Electronics workshop where the students were challenged to build an electronic system that is based on an animal adaptation in nature, then present their ideas to the rest of the workshop. There were several imaginative creations based on rattlesnakes and fireflies.
St John’s staff and students were extremely excited to share this opportunity with other students in the community and student visitors were very positive with their feedback after their St John’s STEM experience. In other exciting news, three Year 10 St John’s science students have won a competition through the Conrad Foundation which has now extended an invitation to participate in an additional competition at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA. The students will be able to further develop their winning entry (an environmentally friendly insect deterrent to protect crops) with leading engineers, scientists and business leaders. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to extend their critical thinking skills. This competition is partnered with NASA and Lockheed Martin, and promotes creative solutions to world problems. We wish the team success in the United States! To find out how a St John’s education will take your child into the future, please contact our Registrar, Janette Collins email jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au Kind regards Suzanne Bain Head, St John’s Anglican College
Guest Speaker at the Event, Mr Peter Nikoloff, Executive Director of Nova Systems, spoke about the amazing opportunities for Science and Engineering graduates in the Defence Industry in Australia. Mr Nikoloff and his team set up an interactive display featuring the latest in Virtual Reality technology simulating flying an aircraft.

Many residents will have noticed recently the amount of work which is taking place behind the scenes at the Amphitheatre as part of the refurbishment in advance of the Centenary celebrations of the Gallipoli landings. The Amphitheatre will be ready for ANZAC Day and the Forest Lake RSL Sub branch have been included in the updates relating to the progress of onsite works. This year is a very special time of refl ection not only for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifi ce, but also to the many who have served and continue to serve in times of peace and conflict. I extend thanks to all who have made such an important contribution to the establishment and preservation of our freedom and democracy. We would not be able to enjoy so many benefits today without these efforts.

It was a pleasure on 13 March to officially open new play equipment at Heathwood Park, and if the assessment of the new equipment could be measured in the smiles on the children’s faces, it is deemed to be a roaring success. A special thanks to Rebecca Bell-Fuller for co-ordinating the fundraising BBQ for Hummingbird House. I think it is only fitting to support this charity (which focuses on children with life limiting illnesses) on a day when we are truly enjoying seeing happy and healthy children in our community. Thank you also to the many residents who came down for the afternoon and supported the BBQ. The Stapylton Road Upgrade is about to get underway so residents are advised to be aware of changed traffic conditions between Wadeville Street and the Logan Motorway in the near future. During March, I attended the Forest Lake State High School, Grand Avenue State School, Pallara State School and Forest Lake State School student leaders inductions. It never ceases to amaze me how mature and responsible these young people in our community are and they are truly a credit to their families and schools. I look forward to working with you in years to come. Reminder – Calamvale Carnival armbands are on sale at local schools so if your children are keen to see Justice Crew in concert on 25 July grab your armbands as tickets are limited. Family Focus
with Mark Mackay
This year’s ANZAC Day commemorations mark 100 years since the landing at the beaches of Gallipoli. Once again we will be reminded of the self-sacrifice and heroism of those who have served in our armed forces and have an opportunity to express our gratitude to them and our commitment to honouring their legacy. One of the great lessons of ANZAC Day for me is the willingness of those who have served to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. They understood that our humanity is really only understood in the context of the wider community. As John Donne wrote, “No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” The stunning self-sacrifice of our men and women in uniform stands in stark contrast to the growing narcissism of our modern society. The cult of fame seen in the explosion of reality TV, the ubiquitous selfishness of advertising and the cacophony of opinions on social media all fuel this growing selfishness and our families are often caught up in it. So, ANZAC Day gives us an opportunity to recalibrate our priorities and world view. We have an opportunity to change the culture by starting with our families. Are we serving others? Are we generous in charity? Do we know our neighbours? Of course, ANZAC Day this year falls just a few weeks after Easter, when we remember the greatest act of self sacrifice in history – the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ who, Christians believe, died for humanity. Christ embodied and taught this principle: “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13) And, it’s important that we pass this virtue of self-sacrifice onto the next generation. It will not always call us to give our lives on the battlefield but it can show in simple acts of local service and kindness, of generosity towards those less fortunate than us. And, it is a virtue that is, more often, “caught rather than taught.” That is, people learn it by seeing it in the actions of others, rather than in words. Make a priority to take your family to an ANZAC Day ceremony this year - head along to the RSL service at the Lake Amphitheatre to honour the sacrifice of our service-people and to pass that legacy to the next generation. Also, you’re welcome to join with the churches in Forest Lake this Easter to honour the sacrifice offered by Jesus Christ at Easter.

STATE MEMBER FOR ALGESTER
Hi! First of all, as the newly elected Member for Algester I’d like to say thank you to our local community for the trust you’ve placed in me. It’s been a busy time, going from campaigning through to becoming the elected Member, and although the challenges are greater, so are the opportunities – I’m still going to be out there every day, meeting and talking with people in the community about the issues that matter to them, and how Government can work to help them. I’ve been along to the Grand Avenue Markets every month on a Sunday morning for well over six months now, and I have to say I really enjoy the experience – it’s a great opportunity to catch up with residents while also supporting local community groups and businesses. If you haven’t been for a while I encourage you to come along and check them out. During the campaign I door-knocked hundreds of houses throughout Forest Lake and surrounding areas, and I also spoke to hundreds more constituents over the phone. That direct contact is important to me – it’s one of the ways I hear about the issues that are impacting our community, and it helps me in working to be an effective voice for Algester in the State Parliament. So if you have any issues you want to raise, please feel free to contact my Electorate Office which is up and running following the change of government. The phone number is 3737 2110, fax is 3737 2119, and the email address is algester@ parliament.qld.gov.au. Or you can always drop in and visit us at 3/137 Parkwood Drive, Heathwood. I look forward to talking to you soon.

Garden Group
YOUR INVITATION
by John Prout
Welcome to gardening in autumn and isn’t it great the weather is cooling down and making it more pleasant to work in the garden. March was a very busy month with The Ipswich Plant Expo, Plant Fair @ Pocket farm, Jill’s open garden in Creekwood and our Garden of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland bus trip kept me out of the garden during the month. We had 26 members visit Jill Lowe’s garden for an enjoyable afternoon tea and the opportunity to explore her garden and there were lots of free cutting available. A full bus of members and guests enjoyed an exciting bus trip as we visited the Maleny Botanic Gardens; the walk in the bird aviary was an experience with so many types of birds on display. It was also great to have the opportunity to visit some of the many boutique shops in Montville and Magnolia Place garden in Flaxton. Watch for details of our next trip in June. April is appearing to be another busy month with Easter and the centennial of the Gallipoli landing at ANZAC Cove. Even if you don’t normally attend a dawn service, this year we all should make the effort. One event not to be missed this month is A Garden A-Fair on the 11 & 12 April in the auditorium at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. This is an inter-club competition between garden clubs who are members of the Qld. Council of Garden Clubs. Hopefully many of our members will exhibit many of their flowers, foliage and vegetables. Come along and check out how we went! Admission is $3 per person and a delicious Devonshire tea will be available. Now is the time to remove your bulbs from the crisper and plant them so you will have some extra colour in your garden next spring. If you have limited space in the garden, some of the bulbs will successfully grow in pots. For one reason or another, there appears to be a plague of small cane toads in our suburb. If you go for a walk in any park in the evening, there are hundreds of them. Not sure what the solution is but when these small cane toads mature they will only increase their population. Has anyone a solution to stop this happening? Changing our meeting to the day-time has proved popular with local gardeners as numbers have increased. This month we have Geoff Day from Nerada Tea visiting and on 5 May our guest speaker will be Bruce Ham form Brisbane Organic Growers advising us on ‘soil diversity and companion planting’. Don’t miss either of these presentations!
We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us!! Next meeting Tuesday April 7th at 9.30 for a 10am start. Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove

3UREXV &OXE 8SGDWH E\ 0DUJH %UHLWHQEDFK A common conception often applied to persons in the autumn of their lives is that some suffer from gerascophobia. Probus likes to remedy this to a certain extent by ‘delaying’ the ageing process through fun, companionship and mental stimulation. To this end, the February outing was a visit to the Museum but a look behind the scenes. Guides Liz and Jonothan met Probians on the third floor for our guided educational tour. Two thirds of insects found in Australia are yet to be named and entomologists are hard at work to classify and name when sent a new specimen. Identification is then sent around the world. Most dragonflies and Lepidoptera (butterflies) have been mapped. For the arachnophobics there was nothing to fear as all spiders were safely in jars. Fortunately for hereptophobics (reptiles & creepy crawlies) all specimens were preserved in various liquids or on pinboards. The preservative liquid used, if a form of alcoholic spirits, tends to change the colour of the contents of the jar. Probians were even shown preserved parasites of blood and malaria. An enormous Moray Eel was stored in an alcoholic vat. In 1882 a whale skull washed up on a beach near Mackay and it was not until 1995 that a similar species was found in Somalia. We were fortunate to view the earlier skull and were shown the different features. Of special local interest was a World War II Japanese flag captured and signed by the soldiers of the Regiment who captured it. We also saw some ancient, as well as modern, Japanese swords and a saddle used in the Great War. Later we were ushered through the Lead and Arsenic Door into a room of stuffed animals. Some snide remarks as we entered through ‘that door made some of us smile. It was an interesting outing but some found it tiring as some members were not used to standing for such an extended time. March heralded in our Annual General Meeting and the election of a new Committee. The meeting was chaired by Don Mitchell from Rotary. As no member was forthcoming to serve as President, Joan Browne was willing to continue. The new office bearers are: Vice President, John Cansdale; Treasurer, Jim Morris; Secretary, Christine Toy; Membership, Shirley Soblusky; Hospitality, Frances Rowe; Programme, Barbara Cansdale; Newsletter, Brian Phillips; PAQ Delegate, Kevin Howson; Welfare Officer, Ruth Boock; Activities, a welcome return to the experienced Lyn Scott & Val Horrigan and Publicity, Marge Breitenbach. Past Presidents were rewarded with a pin and a certificate. Ruth delivered a fascinating anecdote about the magical properties of onions and mushrooms that could also be lethal. Retirees and semi-retirees are invited to attend a Probus meeting to witness for themselves what fun we have, enjoy companionship and improve knowledge by listening to visiting speakers and participating in fascinating trips. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. at the Forest Lake Hotel. Further information see page31 of this publication.
