In marriage counselling, I often share with couples that consistently one of the most significant causes of stress in relationships is money. And that stress doesn’t just arise out of debt stress. We can disagree over how money should be managed; what should be spent and when; should we have a family budget and what should be in it; if we overspend in one area, what is the other area that has to go. To be sure, in our current environment, there aren’t many families who won’t have some measure of financial stress – the cost of families, the increasing cost of living and the threat of inconsistent income all bring some measure of stress. But, there are many areas of financial stress that are frankly self-inflicted and, if we can get those areas under control, we can reduce so much stress in our homes. For one example, having a family budget can help – if we know the insurance, rates and electricity are all due in the next couple of pay cycles, we’ll be careful how we spend in other areas. The Bible is a wonderfully practical book that addresses those areas of our life that cause so much stress, including finances. One of the key points the Bible makes is that we need to have a healthy attitude in regards to money – for example, “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.” (Ecclesiates 5:10) Money is a means to an end, not the end in itself and part of having a good attitude to money is knowing the end we are looking to achieve. I know an elderly couple in Forest Lake who are an outstanding example of a healthy attitude to money. They have a very limited income and unsubstantial savings. But they budget well and are great at prioritising their spending. As such, they can afford to generously invest into the lives of others in a way that inspires me. So, from a practical point of view, here are some steps we can take in regards to money in our homes: • A household budget is a good thing! • We need to look at how we spend our money and evaluate whether we are actually spending our money in the areas that are important. Too often, if we don’t budget, we will just spend as the opportunity/need arises rather than spending on what’s actually important; • Sit down as a family and talk about money – communication is always a good step to take. 3201 1880

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis
I
’ve spent a good amount of my life feeling like I didn’t ‘fit in’. I was never popular, never cool, not particularly sporty, and definitely not smart enough to hang with the ‘nerds’. There just was not a group where I could look around and say to myself, ‘yes, these are my people!’. The result is that once I hit about 30, I realised I didn’t care and that the sound of my own drum resonated with me, even if it didn’t for anyone else. And that was liberating. Since coming back from Thailand a year and a half ago, that feeling has slowly but steadily been creeping back but with a different slant. I look around at all I have, at all we have, in the Western world and wonder why I’m here. Why do I get to have running water, electricity, the right to vote, the ability to receive an education and find gainful employment? Why me? Contentment is the art of being at peace no matter our circumstances. And we generally take that to mean being content when we have less than we want or when we are going through difficulties. Sometimes, it’s hard to be content when things are going well and we have no problems, especially when we read or watch the news, or when friends and family are doing it tough. It’s hard to be content with all the plenty we have, in the face of so many who have so little. I find it’s a constant challenge, not to be grateful, but to be okay with all we have. While at the beach on our recent holiday, I came across a weed growing out of the rocks. It was flowering with pretty daisy-like yellow flowers. The yellow was such an unexpected bright spot against the rocks and the words ‘grow where you’re planted’ popped into my mind. It’s tempting to think we have been planted in the wrong spot. It’s tempting to uproot ourselves and go where we think we will be best suited. We’re not content with just growing where we are. We’re always on the lookout for a climate that we think will encourage more growth, where our true potential will be maximised. It’s tempting to think my life would be better spent being in Thailand working with the rescued girls. It’s tempting to think I am wasting it, here in the land of plenty. And sometimes we’re right. Sometimes we need to pick up and move halfway across the world to make a difference. And sometimes, it’s not. By speaking and writing about what is happening to these girls, I could be making more of an impact than if I were there physically. It’s important to remember that we are where we are for a reason. We may never really understand that reason but until we fully embrace our surroundings, we won’t grow or bloom. Maybe you are where you are simply to provide that bright spot among the blacks and browns in someone else’s landscape.

On a bright and cool July morning, just right for going “ho, ho, ho!”, 100 members and guests from the Forest Lake 50+ Club gathered to celebrate Christmas in July. The destination for the day was Harrigan’s Drift Inn at Calypso Bay, and there was a definite feeling of anticipation in the air as the two Concorde Coaches were boarded. On the way to Harrigan’s, there was a stop for morning tea at the Pimpama Strawberry Farm where a delicious Devonshire Tea awaited and was consumed with great enthusiasm. Next stop was Harrigan’s Drift Inn for our Christmas in July function, where a three-course lunch was enjoyed by all in a wonderful room setting. Good food, beautiful table settings and good company made the perfect way for our members to celebrate Christmas in July. Thank you to our President Leonie and Treasurer Kay for making all the assortment of chocolate treats as lovely gifts for all to take home. A special thank you goes to our local Member of Parliament, Anthony Shorten MP for joining in with our fun and frivolity, thank you very much. It was a fantastic day out, where, by all accounts, everyone had a simply wonderful time. Forest Lake 50+ Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. New members are always welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Kay (Treasurer) on 3278 9406 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618, or email fl50plusc@gmail.com Date claimers for the next three meetings are August 15th, September 19th and October 17th.

Your Teeth Your Smile By Dr Paul Holliday Preparing for retirement Retirement. The word conjures up images of happy times without work to interfere with whatever we want to do. One of the things that we need to prepare for retirement is our health, especially our dental health. Healthcare is the most expensive outlay for those already retired. Usually this is an unexpected and unplanned expense as well. Well there are some things you can do to get the costs for your dental health under control in retirement. Firstly, whatever age you are it is a good idea to talk to your dentist about a plan for your dental health. It’s never too early to plan ahead. There are several areas that should be taken care of so that only regular review exams and cleaning are required. Nothing lasts forever and unfortunately this also includes fillings and other dental work. I will run through the areas that need to be under control. Decay - It sounds obvious that decay or holes need to be fixed. Often, you can’t tell there is decay or holes until X-rays are taken by your dentist. There is a new piece of technology called a diagnostic laser that is able to tell if there is decay when you can’t see it. Both of these are completely painless. Gums - The gums are the foundations for our teeth. If there are problems with the gums, there can be more problems with the teeth. Even regular brushing may not stop bacteria or germs getting underneath the gum which leads to periodontal disease. Many people aren’t aware they have periodontal disease or gum problems. The same x-rays and diagnostic laser can help to determine if you have gum problems. Regular cleaning by your dentist is essential to ensure any problems don’t lead to losing teeth from the gum problems. Bite - Your bite is very important to your overall dental health. Actually, your bite can cause lots of health problems like headaches, blurry vision, ringing in your ears, and many others. The most common problem with a bad bite is worn down teeth. Teeth are pretty strong but that is due to the enamel on the outside, inside they are quite soft and once the enamel is gone, teeth will wear almost before your eyes. A bad or misaligned bite needs to be fixed or your teeth and any dental work will wear much faster than they should and breakages, chips and cracks can occur. Fillings/ dental restorations - Fillings don’t last forever and if you have any fillings that are old, they are best replaced earlier rather than later. Old fillings can cause teeth to break. Broken teeth and fillings are the most common dental problem. Often, it is better to get a longer lasting material, even though the initial cost is higher, than to replace them more often with a cheaper material. Longer lasting fillings are called inlays, onlays and crowns. The goal of a good dentist is to decrease the rate of things breaking down. There are lots of other important areas like diet, medications, brushing, flossing, environmental issues and saliva but the best thing is to talk to your dentist about a lifetime dental plan.

SPECIAL DEAL Multi-talented five year old Lei Lei Burke-Court recently starred alongside Lisa McCune in the QPAC much loved musical ‘The King and I’, adding ‘singing and dancing’ to her list of talents. A student of Richlands East State School, Lei Lei is also a member of Rugby Union team the Forest Lake Wasps. Just as she skips onto the rugby field and masters dodging the opposition to score several tries a match, she likewise showed great flair treading the boards, singing solo with Aussie icon Lisa McCune. With her trademark smile and enthusiasm, Lei Lei definitely made her mark and is the pride of her team, her school and her family. Lei Lei’s mother, Phillipa Burke-Court said, “Opera Australia posted an ad in a local paper looking for little singers and actors to play the King’s children. Lei Lei auditioned and a few weeks later was told she had been chosen to play Princess Ying Yaowalak.” At just 5 years old, Lei Lei was the youngest cast member of ‘The King and I’ and as well as her solo with Lisa McCune in the iconic song “Getting to Know You”, her role also required dancing and acting, including a monologue. To be able to achieve all this, Lei Lei had to get used to rehearsing for twelve hours a week. The Brisbane season ran for seven weeks, with two kids’ teams performing four shows each a week. Unfortunately, this meant that she did miss some time enjoying her other passion, rugby. She loves playing on Saturday mornings and scoring tries. And Lei Lei’s Under 6 teammates missed her presence on the field. Lei Lei enjoys training every Friday with her big sister Koheila. As for her extraordinary experience on stage at QPAC, Lei Lei’s highlights, in typical five year old fashion, were “Everything!”, but especially “Making new friends.” She also loved the costumes, getting to sing and act on stage, her family in Brisbane, Sydney, Fiji and New Zealand coming to watch, as well as friends and staff from her school, Richlands East State. So remember the name Lei Lei! She’s already a little girl who’s gone a long way. And a great reminder to get out there and have fun, whatever field you’re in. If you would like to know more about playing Rugby in 2015 (girls play alongside boys from U6 to U12), please visit the club website www.forestlakewasps.com.au or call the Club President Richard Grimshaw on 0407 790 497. Applications for 2015 are now open.

STATE MEMBER FOR INALA
Last month saw the return of NAIDOC week celebrations across the electorate for 2014, as our community honoured the history, culture and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It was pleasing to see so many schools and community groups celebrate the week, including many organisations in the Forest Lake area. For those who are unaware, each NAIDOC week comes with a theme that helps the community reflect upon a different aspect of Indigenous life. This year saw Serving Country: Centenary & Beyond selected, as all Australians looked back on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought, and in some cases paid the ultimate sacrifice, in defence of the country we all call home. Their priceless contribution must never be forgotten, and wonderful events such as NAIDOC Week ensure this is the case. As in previous years, the major event was the Inala NAIDOC Family Fun Day held at C.J. Greenfield Sports Complex on July 9. It was great to attend the event organised by local elders and other indigenous organisations. Having attended quite a few of these celebrations, it is worth noting the increasing numbers of participants who come out each year, and urge everyone in the Forest Lake community to attend in 2015.
Inala C&K celebrates 45th birthday
C&K Inala Kindergarten and Community Preschool recently celebrated its 45th birthday by installing a totem pole at the entrance to the centre. The Inala C&K Kindergarten was funded by volunteers who saw the need for a kindergarten in the area. Many fundraising activities were organised to raise the funds to purchase the land at Rosella St and then to build the centre including street stalls, lamington drives and lawn mowing. The totem pole is made of lawn mower parts to commemorate the voluntary labour that helped build the kindergarten. It was created by local builder, John Duncan, whose four children have Veronica, Tate, Ella, Rory and Neve attended the Inala Duncan with the mower pole. Kindy.

New site for Community Hall revealed

Parkinson Ward Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor announced the $2 million Forest Lake Community Hall development phase is ready to proceed at a new location. “I am pleased to announce the Forest Lake Community Hall will be constructed on Council land in College Avenue adjoining the existing carpark and within close proximity to the sportsfields,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. The new site will be home to a community facility catering for groups and clubs based in Forest Lake and will include some storage facilities. The College Avenue site has an existing carpark and on-street carparking and is in close proximity to public transport. Due to changes to State Government legislation as part of the 2011 Flood Commission Recommendations, the previous site on Forest Lake Boulevard had too many impediments after being classified as a dam wall. This new location will allow construction of the Forest Lake Community Hall to proceed this financial year and become a facility to serve the clubs and organisations which call Forest Lake home. Funds have been dedicated in the current Brisbane City Council budget for the project. “During construction there may be some disruption to car parking facilities on site, however, we will endeavour to keep this to a minimum. “The Lord Mayor and I committed to building this facility within this four year term and it will be delivered. “The Community Hall is about creating opportunities for local clubs and organisations to have a home base in the suburb and for locals to have easy access to participate in activities. “I am pleased to ensure this facility is being built for our local community and I know it will serve the community well for many years to come,” concluded Cr Angela Owen-Taylor.

Forest Lake National Seniors Branch Update By Julie Baldwin
Bit chilly outside? Come along and enjoy a wonderful morning. We invite ladies and gentleman in the 50 something age group in Forest Lake and its surrounding suburbs to join us. August’s meeting is Wednesday 6th (First Wednesday of the month for August only) at Settlers Village, 41 High Street, Forest Lake, 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Parking available at Salvation Army and on High Street. Members keep in touch through morning teas, concerts, plays, movies, lunches, evening dinners or just a friendly greeting at the shopping centre. Our trips are very popular either local or around the great south east of Queensland. To our members who are unwell, best wishes for a return to good health. At July’s branch meeting, we were given a presentation by James Herbert from Centrelink. James’ presentation was very informative. Many of us remarked that we had learnt something new on the day. James stressed the importance of keeping Centrelink informed of any changes to your circumstances as soon as these occur. Calamvale Branch Vice President, Graham Brewer and wife, Betty, visited us at our July meeting. Graham had just returned from a journey out to St George to visit and distribute the items of non perishable food, toiletries, clothing and cash donations to the farming families out west who are doing it tough. Calamvale, Forest Lake and Centenary Branches rallied to support the Relief Drive and members and friends were very generous in their response. Some members from Calamvale will join Browns Plains Branch on a trip out west and have donated $1000 to “Buy a Bale” and will take $500 in cash to donate directly. A second trip will take place before Christmas this year.

The monthly meeting has been bought forward due to the Exhibition holiday. In July the “Theatre Goers Group” enjoyed a great movie morning watching The Jersey Boys and are all looking forward to a Theatre restaurant night out on 2nd August. On Thursday 17 July, 63 members and friends ventured to The Old Courthouse Restaurant in Cleveland for a fun filled Christmas in July celebration. A delicious lunch was enjoyed by all and we received a surprise visit from two of Santa’s Elves. An entertainer is booked for August’s meeting as we celebrate our 3rd birthday. In late August we will celebrate Seniors Week. For further information about our Branch please contact either Julie 3278 7274 or Ros 3372 9432.

The recent Ride to Conquer Cancer fundraiser I co-hosted with Becis Chartered Accountants was a success, raising over $10,000. The challenge is now on for business owner Tony Becis, who lives at Heathwood, former St John’s student, Daniel Huynh (a resident of Doolandella), and Forest Lake resident Lorrie Patrick and her team to complete the ride of 230km in the upcoming weeks. I was so pleased to be at the Rotary Club of Forest Lake Changeover lunch at which Ann George from Project Love and Care was awarded recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow for her dedication to helping young people in need. I have known Ann for a number of years and I have seen firsthand how she has opened her home to store items for these children and works tirelessly with her team of volunteers to give children who are taken into care essential items to assist them.

For many residents the significant number of volunteers who support our local community are not those who they see in the limelight, but they are always there in the frontline when needed. I would like to congratulate Tony Daniel, a long term member of South Western SES Group, who recently celebrated 40 years of service to the SES. Tony is one of those people who gets on with the job and was humbled to receive the first ever 40 year clasp from Minister for Police Fire and Emergency Services, the Hon Jack Dempsey MP, in front of his family and peers. I know how hard Tony worked in 2011 floods, assisted in Cyclone Yasi and the statewide flood recovery, and a number of years ago successfully located an elderly woman who had become disoriented and became lost in bushland. Well done Tony, your dedication is to be admired and applauded. Work is well underway on the Amenities Building for the Philip Place Sportsfields and residents will notice in the upcoming months that construction will commence. It is anticipated, weather permitting that the building will be completed by the beginning of 2012 and this will be a great way for our local youth to enjoy their sport with facilities to support them. Some residents have raised with me the importance of being able to identify locations around the lake for the purposes of emergency services. I am currently working with Council staff to ascertain how we can utilise some of our bikeway signage into serving a secondary purpose of being directional signage when the need arises. As this project progresses I will keep you informed. The Blunder Road deviation is tracking on schedule and will be completed before year end. Recently the pylons for the second bridge were hoisted into place by a 450 tonne crane. Many residents will have already noticed the changes to the road and work on the murals on the sound attenuation barriers will start shortly.

We had a lesser number than expected turn out for the game at Palmer Colonial on the Gold Coast. A cool and misty start to the day obviously held back some from making the long drive. Winners on the day were A Grade Josh Wilson, runner up was Bob Brose. B Grade winner Colin Brooke, runner up was Bob Pearce. C Grade winner Jason White, runner up was Peter Cuttance. Longest drive winners were A Grade Josh Wilson, B GradeForest Don Pickwick andGolf C Grade Jason White. Nearest the pin winners Lake Social Club Update Josh Wilson and Mick Morley and the approach won by Alistair McCosh. Sunday July 13 was the second round of the club championships played at the Oxley Golf Club with 30 players turning up. The course had been prepared for an upcoming tournament and their own club championship with the greens very fast and requiring a lot of concentration to avoid three putting. A real challenge for all. Winners were in A Grade Cory Almond, runner up was Gil Vargas. B Grade winner Colin Brooke, runner up was Jason Lee. C Grade winner Michael Eveleigh, runner up was Glen Mostyn. Longest drive winners were A Grade Gil Vargas, B Grade Bob Petrie and C Grade Steve McKay. July has been a jam-packed month for Probians with a few celebrations in tow. At our Club meeting, Mark Newman, Branch Sales and Service Manager of Forest Lake Community Branch of Heritage Bank presented the Club with a $500 grant to purchase a camera and slide frame. President Joan thanked Mark and assured him the requested items would be put to good use and very much appreciated. During morning tea we all joined in to help Ted celebrate being ninety years young with a large birthday cake. To tie in with Christmas in July, the PAQ Choir then entertained us for the remainder of the morning. At the outset, Chorister Ellenore Lynam gave a brief history of the Choir and what category of songs were to be performed viz. Christmas Carols, Spirituals and Australian Carols. It was most enjoyable and relaxing listening to the strains of melodic voices. Marge, a previous chorister and an original member of the Choir, passed the vote of thanks. We live in beautiful sunny Queensland but once a year we seem to want to enjoy the cold and Christmas in July has become a popular gastronomic celebration. Not to be left behind, Probians also indulge in this celebration and this year we went to Tarampa for a July Christmas lunch. En route we stopped at Rosewood for morning tea. Kaysuelle experienced an influx of shoppers and the large discounts enticed some Probians to shake their wallets and shop to their hearts content! After all the retail therapy, it was off to Tarampa to the Tarampa Hotel “Good times since 1880”.It likes to be known as catering for families and offers live entertainment on Fridays. After a very traditional Christmas lunch, followed by the proverbial plum pudding, we were pleasantly surprised by the arrival of a young Santa with his young helper. Everyone in the dining room received a gift. We were tickled pink as we were totally caught unawares! Throughout lunch we were entertained by Kylie Castle and Kym Carson. On the way home, we stopped at the award winning and famous Fernvale pie shop to make purchases for future meals. A message to any retirees or semi-retirees who are still young at heart come and join us for food, fun and frolic. We meet every second Tuesday of the month at 10 am, Forest Lake Hotel. If you have private health insurance cover good luck in deciphering your annual tax statement this year...but unless you are an accountant, you probably have better things to do! For my sins I am an accountant, and I have to admit to being a little confused. As many of you might be aware, the private health insurance rebate has been means tested for a few years. Whereas the typical rebate used to be 30%, depending on age, it now depends on your income, or more precisely your income for Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) purposes which, of course, is a little different just to ensure some additional confusion! Thus, if your MLS as a couple exceeded $280,000 you can kiss the rebate goodbye. Actually, you can still claim it temporarily as a reduced premium, but don’t spend it all on a holiday as you will be paying it back through your tax assessment. However, for 2013-14 some additional changes were introduced. With effect from 1 April 2014 your rebate contribution from the Australian Government changes based on a weighted average ratio. The weighted average ratio is determined using a formula which takes into account growth in the Consumer Price Index and the industry weighted average premium increase. Under the current legislation, an industry level approach applies through the use of the weighted average ratio. The weighted average ratio results in 96.8% of the premium paid (excluding Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loadings) attracting a rebate...in simple terms, if you receive a rebate it will be less than previously. However, the extra sting in the tail comes from the LHC no longer being subject to a rebate. The LHC results in a person paying 2% higher premiums for each year that one joins above age 30. Thus a person joining a health fund at age 53 would pay a premium 46% higher than a person joining at say 28. Without complicating it with the weighted average ratio issue above, if the annual premium paid for a single person is $1,460 the eligible rebate percentage will essentially apply to $1,000 only. Good news, with a little reverse engineering I worked my annual statement figures out. Who cares, the bad news is I get less back than in the previous year! Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues.

with Donna Miscamble
Join me in welcoming Donna Miscamble to the pages of The Lake News. Each month, Donna will address different problems we all have with our fourlegged best friends. And you can participate by asking her about your dog problems, simply send an email to donna@caninecorrections.com.au.
Excessive barking It can be confusing and frustrating, if you are training your dog and it’s still not working for you. Everyone has an opinion, but it is just not helping. You are made to feel inadequate as a dog owner. Take heart, there is a lot of misleading information out there. Only someone who is a certified canine psychologist with hands on experience with all breeds can help you and your dog. Barking when excited or in defence of their territory is a natural response from dogs, however dogs that are bored will bark all day. Unfortunately, consistent barking can become a behaviour pattern. Once this type of barking has become a habit, the dog will require training to control the barking. This training will require patience, consistency and rewards for positive reinforcement. The first and foremost question to ask with all behaviour problems, is “Why? What sets the dog off?” “Everything”, you say. Well no, not really. It needs to be determined if it is excitement, defence, territorial, boredom, or loneliness. Once you establish the why, you are able to understand which training guide will help you achieve results. The breed of your dog will also play a major role in the best training regime that will give the best results. Yelling at your dog to ‘stop’ really won’t do it, and in some cases it creates more excitement, which leads to more barking. Dogs have an excellent sense of hearing, yelling only gets you more upset than the dog. You need to get their attention, focus on you and what you are saying. A firm ‘no’ as soon as he stops, reward with “Good dog” and a favourite treat. Their focus of attention on barking has now been interrupted. “I tried that, and it doesn’t work”, you say. Be patient and consistent. And remember this is not an overnight result; it takes 60 days to change and to reform a habit. Consistency is the key to your dogs success and everyone happiness. While you are away from the home, mind stimulating toys are incredibly helpful in keeping your dog busy for the day. These toys can be filled with your dog’s favourite treat and will take mental ability to work out how to retrieve the food. When a dog is tired, they are much less likely to bark when bored. Toys are also a good way to keep your dog occupied when you are not at home. Regular exercise for dogs such as walking or ball games is a great way to relieve boredom. Now you have a well-excised and restful dog. When you come home, give lots of love and attention. A well-balanced dog is a happy dog and less likely to bark or seek attention. Email me your dog’s behaviour problem and each month, I will select one to write about for a solution donna@caninecorrections.com.au.
Veterinary News by Dr Ian Gorrie BVSc
Fleas - Here are the facts I have noticed a lot of flea infestations recently. Although the warmer months tend to be when fleas are getting r e a d y t o a t t a ck our pets and make their lives itchy and uncomfortable, they can also cause irritation during the winter months. The answer to good flea control is simple; use a product that works and use prevention all year round. Fleas are tiny dark brown parasitic insects that infest the coat and skin of pets. They have an amazing skill allowing them to jump up to 150 times their own length. That’s like a human jumping over 300 metres. Their remarkable jumping skills allow them to transit easily between hosts and the surrounding environment. One of the first signs of a flea infestation is that your pet will be scratching and seem quite irritated especially around the base of the tail or backs of their hind legs. Parting the fur for a closer examination you could find adult fleas on the skin. You are likely to find flea dirt that looks like small black specks of grit, similar to finely ground pepper. Flea eggs and pupae can remain dormant for astonishingly long periods of time under a variety of conditions. They lay dormant in the garden, or in your carpet and furniture, until the conditions are favourable to hatch. From there, they jump great distances to find a host on which to feed. They travel on pets, wildlife (such as possums) and even on people and don’t care who or what they bite! Fleas are the number one cause of skin disease in pets and can cause problems ranging from simple itchiness to weeping sores, scaly skin and a strong smell. Some pets are even allergic to flea bites (a condition known as Flea Allergy Dermatitis), where the saliva from one flea bite sets off a whole body allergic reaction, making the pet miserable. All skin conditions like this require veterinary treatment. Fleas also are the host of an intestinal worm called a tapeworm. This worm can be transmitted into the gut by ingesting a flea (such as when the pet is chewing at its fur). Fleas breed at a phenomenal rate. Ten adult fleas can multiply to more than 250,000 fleas in only 30 days. The fleas you see on your dog represent only 5% of the fleas in the environment. The rest of the population is represented in the egg and larval stages found in your carpets, furniture, bedding and around the garden. There are many products that kill fleas and from experience some are much better than others. Ask and make sure you are on the best product for your pet’s lifestyle.

I would like to congratulate Del Greenway on her appointment as President of Lions Club Forest Lake and also Bruce Pocklington on his appointment to President of Rotary Club Forest Lake. I wish them every success. Both these volunteer organisations contribute so heavily to the Forest Lake community through many and varied projects. Residents within the boundaries of the Algester Electorate in Forest Lake have received over the last month my Algester’s Biggest Survey to have their say on issues ranging from health, education, jobs and the economy. Residents have been busy filling them in and returning them to my office. I value greatly your views and comments. Keep them coming in until the end of this month, when we will draw the winner of the great prizes up for grabs. The safety of our children is paramount and as residents know particularly around our schools, safety has had a boost with the installation of flashing school lights by the State Government. I am very excited that we have been able to contribute $28 000 out of a total cost of $55 000 for safety improvements to the Grand Avenue State School crossing. The construction of the crossing is organised by local government as a council owned road. With my mention of the Ekka previously, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Grand Avenue State School P&C on organising an Ekka Fun day on the 13th of this month. For many families the cost of attending the Ekka can be challenging, so this local event with rides, show bags, animal farm, food and side shows is a great alternative. I would also like to recommend the Grand Ave Markets held at the school. It was great to attend the recent market day and catch up with so many residents. I understand that over the coming months the markets will be having live music and even more stalls. We all remember the markets when they were held at the shopping centre, and I urge all residents to make the trip to Grand Ave Markets on the next market day. Pick up a bargain, support the school and have a chat with me.
Hello Readers As we begin Term Four at St John’s we can look back over Semester One and be very pleased with student outcomes and achievements across the full range of our balanced College programs. Highlights of Term Three included our community oriented events in May where Hospitality students catered for over 200 guests and the College Corelli Strings performed at the Mother’s Day High Tea; students joined forces with the very focused and enthusiastic College Carnival Committee to raise funds for College facilities and resources; students performed in choral, band and orchestra ensembles demonstrating a very high level of musicianship at the interstate Combined Music Festival; and students committed themselves to performing well and with excellent sportsmanship in their first ever team sport competition in the Blue Division of TAS Sports. In the Primary school students have also enjoyed a very successful semester, participating in a host of engaging learning activities including academic challenges, performing arts concerts, sporting events, camps and excursions. Unlike other schools, a St John’s education provides a truly enriched experience which develops the whole child and encompasses academic, creative, physical, spiritual and social aspects. These experiences and more ensure our students are provided with the best foundations for future learning. On the world stage, two St John’s athletes will represent our country in the forthcoming Commonwealth and Young Olympic games. Old Collegian, Hannah Joye competing in High Jump in the Commonwealth Games and Year 12 student Trae Williams competing in sprint events at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games in August. As part of our commitment to continuous review and development of our programs, recently, we have engaged with the Confucius Institute at the University of Queensland in order to provide our students with the opportunity to develop deeper understanding of Chinese culture and language. This alliance will provide us with resources and opportunities for in country teacher professional development. This additional support for the teaching of the Chinese language fits with the expanded opportunities for students to study an additional language in the secondary school through our Language Hub. Please visit St John’s at our next Open Day and experience the St John’s spirit first hand.

Forest Lake Area
Garden Group by John Prout
The last month of winter is here and the lengthening days bring us promise that spring is just around the corner as the garden sees the first stirring of the new season. Maybe some of our natives are trying to outdo the spring flowers with many in bloom now. It’s great driving around the suburbs seeing the Acacias (wattles) revealing their many shades of yellow. How can I not mention the Camellias? So many different colours are on show highlighting many gardens. Our Royal National Show is on this month, giving everyone the opportunity to see what the country and city can produce with stock, agriculture and many arts and crafts displays. The RNA also has the habit of bringing the cool westerly winds so we still have to ‘rug-up’ before spring arrives. Last month, we had an enjoyable Gold Coast Herb & History bus trip. The day was cold and we didn’t have to be asked twice to get on the bus. First stop was Mudbrick Cottage and Herb Garden in Mudgeeraba and after being fortified with a cuppa, we descended on the herbs for sale. There were plenty of plants, soaps and pottery available to be purchased and we came away with lighter purses. We set forth for Tyalgum where we were to have lunch. Along the way we had views of Mt. Warning and scenic rural countryside. In Tyalgum, there were a number of gift shops, a secondhand book shop and a dress shop to further deplete the contents of our purses.
Lunch at Flutterbies Cottage Café was the best lunch we have had for a while. First course was yummy and the pavlova/ cake dessert was delicious. After a little more shopping and collecting a number of brochures for future outings, it was on to Banana Cabana Fruit Barn. In spite of the lovely lunch, a few of us managed to finish the day with a chocolate coated banana or an ice-cream. The next bus trip will be on Wednesday 27 October as we visit the Eumundi Markets and Fair Hill Nursery. Keep this day spare in your diary. Now for some exciting news - under the Australian Open Garden Program, two of our member’s gardens will be open to the public next month. The first one is the lovely cottage garden of Denis and Jenny White at 8 St Ives Circuit on 6 and 7 September. Anita Simonis’ tropical garden at 8 Collingrove Place will be open on 27 and 28 September. I can recommend it will be well worth visiting these magnificent gardens. Our August meeting will be the AGM followed by a Question & Answers evening with Noel Burdette. As you know, Noel is a popular guest speaker and not to be missed. Hope to see you there and share a cuppa with you.
We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us! Next meeting Tuesday August 12th at 7.30pm Forest Lake Community House, Alpine Place
