News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club Update The last of our club championship rounds was played at the St Lucia Golf Club on Sunday 27 October. Another good turnout of 31 players on the day. The course was in good condition considering the dry spell that we had been having, the fairways had a good cover of grass

by Peter Cuttance and the greens true and quick. Some very good scores were recorded, surprising what the club championships can do.

Forest Lake Social Golf Club Update Winners on the day were in A Grade Dan McKay, runner up was Alan Corless. B Grade winner was Jason White, runner up was Atul Bhardwaj (OCB). C Grade winner was Steve McKay, runner up Stephanie Corless. Longest drive winners, A Grade Ben Lalor, B Grade Mark McNaughton and C Grade Stephanie Corless. Nearest the pin winners were Mark Kinnane and Steve Donnell. Approach shot on the 3rd hole, Mark Kinnane.

Our last game for the season was played at Gailes Golf Club on Sunday 10th November. Not the usual number of players (21 only) but all enjoyed how the course had been prepared with lush fairways and well trimmed greens. The course produced some really good results.

Winners were in A Grade Alan Corless, runner up was Dan McKay, B Grade winner Colin Brooke (41 points), runner up was John Clarke, C Grade winner Steve Mckay, runner up Don Mitchell. Longest drive winner in A Grade Mick Morley, B Grade Marc Steward and C Grade Steve McKay. Nearest the pin winners were Pat Ayling and Gil Vargas. Approach shot Mark McNaughton.

Congratulations to all the winners over the two games.

Interesting and good to see some names repeated in the winners listing, obviously playing some very consistent golf.

If you are a regular reader of this column, you would know by now that I love Christmas. I love the rush, the entertaining, the present wrapping, the buzz in the air. I love it all.

My husband, though, being not so keen on the rush and busyness of the season, was lamenting it’s excess and the fact that most of the time, the reason for the season is not even mentioned.

It’s true, isn’t it? Christmas in the western world is often a time of excess. We spend too much, eat too much, drink too much, and the whole point of Christmas gets lost along the way, if it’s even remembered at all. It can be hard to see how any of what we currently do at Christmas time has any relationship to what happened in that manger over 2000 years ago.

So, how do we get around that if we want to remember the real reason we celebrate it but not boycott the whole event?

I’m not sure what the answer is for each individual but here’s how I look at it.

When we rush around looking for that perfect gift for a loved one, we are honouring the gift humanity was given on the first Christmas. When we worry if there is enough food or that the meat is overcooked, we are demonstrating we care about the people we are feeding and want to give them the best there is. When we make up another bed on the lounge room floor, we are opening our home and showing love to others - something that the person who was born at Christmas talked a bit about. When we don’t sit down all day because we are on our feet ensuring everyone has enough drinks and food, we are serving others - another thing that the same person talked a bit about. When we go on a mad cleaning frenzy in preparation for our guests, we are really saying that their comfort and giving them pleasant surrounds is important to us.

We can find the real meaning of Christmas in everything we do if we look at it a different way.

For those who feel bothered by the over-commercialism, the tinsel, the secular emphasis on a fat man in a red suit, try shifting your focus and instead of grumbling and lamenting the lack of acknowledgement of the real reason for the season, embrace the festivities.

What better way to say thank you for the ultimate gift we were given than loving, serving, laughing and thoroughly enjoying ourselves?

So, from us to you, a merry Christmas. May it be safe, full of joy and abounding in fellowship, no matter how you spend it.

Do I really need a checkup?

I was asked recently by a regular visitor – do I really need a check up? She told me that she has a good toothbrush and now, after regular nagging by us, also flosses every day so she shouldn’t need a regular checkup. We talked about it and she realized that the benefits for her overall health are worth a trip to the dentist every six months.

There is no longer any question in the medical/dental world over the direct links between periodontal disease (which I call the silent gum disease because most people never know they have it) and systemic diseases such as strokes, heart disease, diabetes and even Alzheimer’s disease and low birth weight in babies.

Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are not just about cleaning and polishing the teeth. It’s about your overall health and well-being. Regular maintenance usually means that any small problems can be fixed or prevented before they become big expensive or very painful problems.

X-rays are needed every couple of years to check between the teeth and under the gums where you can’t see. Without any x-rays, all sorts of things could be going on out of sight. The diagnostic laser helps but it can’t see under the gums either.

Children’s teeth are changing all the time and they also should have a regular dental checkup. Checking how the baby teeth are falling out and the positioning of the new permanent teeth could allow us to start interceptive orthodontic treatment early to prevent major problems later on. It is much better to help straighten teeth if they are growing in crooked than to simply wait till all the baby teeth are gone and then look at fixing the problems.

Also it’s important to check how well they are brushing – do you really know they are brushing their teeth or are they just wetting the toothbrush and having a bit of a chew on it?

Even though holes are easy to fix these days, it is better to prevent them before they become holes. Regular fluoride on kid’s teeth helps protect both baby and the permanent teeth against decay.

Someone from South Africa recently told me about their health fund insurance back home. They give dental bonuses or discounted premiums to everyone who visits their dentist for regular checkups at least twice a year. Obviously they have realized the value of regular dental checkups or they wouldn’t offer such a scheme.

Ultimately it’s up to you. What do you want for your teeth or your child’s teeth? That is the question. We will keep recommending regular dental checkups for your dental health (meaning the teeth, gums, jaw bone health, jaw joint health, bite health etc) and general health and well being.

Forest Lake National Seniors

By Julie Baldwin Branch Update As an exciting, fun filled 2013 draws to a close we are all looking forward to our Christmas Lunch and Meeting to be held at the Richlands Tavern on 11 December commencing at 10am. Bookings and prepayment for the lunch are essential.

Forest Lake Branch provides National Seniors members in Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs with an opportunity to get together to meet new people, enjoy social outings and also to have their say and be informed on important issues that affect over 50’s.

On a day of perfect weather late October, 19 members and friends had a wonderful outing visiting historic Ormiston House in the Redland Shire. Such a beautiful setting with lovely gardens and views towards Stradbroke Island.

We were treated to Devonshire Tea on the verandah followed by an interesting talk on the history of Ormiston from one of the lovely volunteer ladies. We were split into two groups and taken on a fascinating and very enjoyable tour of the house.

Captain Louis Hope and family were the original owners and Captain Hope is known as the father of the commercial sugar industry in Queensland.

Thanks to an enthusiastic group of volunteers, Ormiston House is a much loved and cared for historic home. Many of us ventured into the Carmelite Monastery. A monastery of vowed cloistered contemplative women, following the reforms of St. Theresa of Avila. There are 14 nuns in residence. The Chapel was so tranquil and outside beautiful roses bloomed. Lunch was a very filling buffet at Redlands Sports Club where we relaxed afterwards before our journey back home.

Broncos Melbourne Cup Lunch last month and 32 chatty members and friends enjoyed a great day out. We travelled by bus to the event with an equally excited and friendly group from Forest Lake Probus. Quite a few ladies and gents were finalists in the fashion parade and everyone looked wonderful on the day. Barry’s Sweeps proved a winner; congratulations to the lucky ones. Our buffet lunch was delicious. The entertainer was enjoyable with lots of familiar songs to sing along to.

Some of us stepped on to the dance floor to the cheers of the audience. I made that bit up.

We were very fortunate to have yet another very interesting guest speaker at the November meeting. Meetings recommence in February 2014 with an exciting calendar of events lined up. To everyone we wish a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to a bright and cheerful 2014. To Susannah and her Staff at The Lake News, warm wishes and grateful thanks from us. ocal resident, Trish, has lived in Forest Lake for almost 20 years and up until two years ago enjoyed a successful career as a real estate agent.

An unexpected turn of events resulted in the need for life saving spinal surgery and four months in hospital which put an abrupt end to her corporate career.

Learning to walk again was challenging for Trish but that same dedication and positivity that put her at the top of the Real Estate ladder has, after two years, paid dividends, she is almost there.

Safety enhancement for local school zone New school zone warning lights were installed outside Forest Lake State School in Woogaroo St last month.

“The installation of the signs serve as an opportunity to remind families and drivers to slow down when approaching or driving in the vicinity of schools,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor (Parkinson Ward).

“These flashing light school zone signs are a welcome addition to our local school community and I encourage all drivers and families to be vigilant around schools.

“There has been success through the installation of flashing light school zone signs as they have been proven to improve the visibility of school zones, serving as an active reminder to drivers of the important environment in which they travelling.

“So when drivers are dropping off or picking up children they need to keep an eye out for the new signs and make sure to stick to the signed speed limit,” concluded Cr Angela Owen-Taylor.

Flashing light school zone signs consist of a standard school zone sign that incorporates a red flashing ring around the speed limit as well as two flashing yellow lights.

These signs are intended to draw motorists’ attention to the operation of the school zone.

Forest Lake State School was nominated to receive these new signs as part of a $10 million Queensland State Government commitment to improve school road safety.

2013 is coming to an end and I am sure that many of you, like myself, will take some time over the Christmas and New Year period to relax and reflect on the year that was.

It has been a very busy year, particularly in the political spectrum and I would again like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting me at the federal election. I do not take this support for granted and I will continue to work for the people of the Western Corridor.

It is important to remember to take extra precautions on our roads over the holidays. There are a few simple measures that can be taken to ensure everyone’s safety.

It is undoubtable that there will be extra traffic on the roads, so make sure you plan your trip and allow for delays. Always stick to the speed limit, obey the road rules and ensure all of your passengers are wearing their seatbelt.

Remember, it is better to get to your destination safe and late, than not at all.

Lions Christmas Father Christmas has appointed Lions Clubs as his agents in Australia (see article page 15). All letters to Santa will be answered.

Lions will pay their traditional visit to the Lodge during Christmas to have a chat with the residents there and present some gifts. A fund raising BBQ will be held at the annual Forest Lake Christmas Carols.

Leos Take an Active Part in the Clean-up Lions ‘Adopt-a-road’ program is now in to its second year. Our main thorough fare, the Boulevard and its surroundings, now looks much cleaner. On Sunday October 27th many of our Leos supported by Lions took to the streets to clean-up. Good work Leos.

Over US$ 2 million Awarded for Projects Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) Board of Directors meeting at Port Douglas awarded 51 Lions Clubs grants amounting to US$ 2,443,541. These grants will help Lions in their various projects, to build playgrounds for children with disabilities, purchase of ophthalmological equipment for local hospitals, conduct medical and dental missions, purchase of low vision aids etc. It is believed that these grants will touch the lives of an estimated 4.7 million people globally.

Immediately after the recent Indian cyclone LCIF awarded US$100,000 to Multiple District 322, the Indian Lions Clubs, to bring relief to people in the affected area.

Help Red Cross stock up for Christmas As the festive season fast approaches, Red Cross is appealing for urgent donations of unwanted summer clothing to help stock local Red Cross Shops for Christmas.

National Marketing Manager, Jayne-Anne Power says ladies summer clothing is in hot demand, particularly dresses but anything light and in good condition is always appreciated.

“The early summer weather in many parts of the country has depleted our stores of summer clothing,” said Jayne-Anne.

“Christmas is the busiest time of the year for our Red Cross Shops, so we need more stock in the next few weeks to cater for the many hundreds of people who’ll be coming into our stores during December to buy something special for Christmas and help a great cause at the same time.”

The proceeds from shop sales help support people during disasters, provide daily phone calls to check on the wellbeing of isolated or elderly Australians, and prepare nutritious breakfasts for children who need a healthy start to the day.

To donate summer clothing simply walk into a Red Cross Shop and hand your items across the counter or place them in the donation box at the entrance to each store.

I recently attended the launch of the South West Designated Driver Program at Lions Soccer Club which is timely in the lead-up to Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The program was launched by Metro South Health and the Liquor Industry Group - South West Brisbane and will provide free soft drinks to those who have the responsibility of getting their family or friends home safely at the end of a night out. Under the program, designated drivers identify themselves to bar staff and receive a wrist band by pledging to remain alcohol-free for the night. I know of two venues in my electorate that will run the program - Lions Soccer Club and Hotel Richlands. All participating venues will display posters to publicise the offer.

During the last Parliamentary sitting, I had the opportunity to congratulate a couple of smart Forest Lake State School students who took out prizes in this year’s Buy Smart Competition.

The competition is an opportunity for young people to develop consumer skills and create something to teach others about their new-found knowledge. Hunter Davis and Ben McBean placed third in the Years 4-6 category with their “To buy or not to buy” board game. Roy Craig took out the top prize in the category with his “Money Mission” computer game.

Well done boys.

The Forest Lake Christmas Carols have a new venue this year at St John’s Forest Lake Secondary College. Their sporting oval will allow more people to be catered for safely and more off-road parking. This will be the 18th consecutive year that the event has been held. Congratulations to Forest Lake Community Events Committee, local churches and major sponsor the Forest Lake Heritage Community Bank for holding this signature community event.

South-West Brisbane Motoring Club Inc

The South-West Brisbane Car Club has been very active this year and a lot of interest in the club outings. This is what we having been doing so far this year.

July: We held a car display and sausage sizzle at Auto Barn at Browns Plains. There was a lot of interest in our club. Our club had its monthly run and this month was a games day, where we intended to participate with our cars, Blind Driving, golfing and many other interesting events.

Unfortunately we only got to throwing the rod and guessing games when the rain started, so that was the end of that day.

August: The club attended the Jimboomba Auto Extravaganza Car Show, where we had a lot of interested people joining the club.

September: The club decided to try a mid week run and this was to Canungra for morning tea and then travelled to a wine factory. Lunch break was at a look out. Lovely day and good weather. Some of the members decided to go to the Tamborine Mountain Distillery on the way home. The monthly club run was to Jacobs Well, this was an observation run with a stop at Yatala Pie Shop. Some of the members tried fishing at Jacobs Well, with no success.

October: The mid week run was to Redcliffe Museum which offers an intriguing insight into European History since 1799. Then onto lunch break on the foreshore. The club attended the Black Snake Creek Festival, where we parade through the town of Marburg. Interesting item was also part of the Festival. Our monthly club run was to Goombungee, this was most enjoyable and a great day.

November: Our run will be a short one and then on to Forest Lunch for our Christmas Lunch at Diamantes.

If anyone is interested in viewing some of the cars, they will be there from 1 pm.

The October speaker was marine pilot Graham Stretton. His topic was Brisbane Marine Pilots and the work they do. What an interesting raconteur speaker who enthralled us with his delivery to such an extent that he has been asked to return sometime in the future. Unfortunately time caught up with the speaker and members had to limit their questions! Marine pilots work under the Navigation Act and English is the language of the seas. Any ship over fifty metres demands that a marine pilot has to guide it into Port.

Unlike in the past, where only thorough local knowledge was relied upon, today there are electronic charts as well as technology to assist safe navigation.

Graham started his career as a cadet with the P & O Line. Ship handling experience is vital as well as being able to enjoy it. He explained what was involved in boarding and disembarking from a tug to the ship. The best way to make a comparison was to abseiling but there was no connection because you also had to contend with wind and waves on the side and timing was vital to get to the ship’s bridge as soon as possible. That is where the exchange of information with the Captain takes place. Although the Master of the Ship retains command, it is the pilot that has control and delivers the instructions that have to be followed to the letter. Graham also related some interesting information about the Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s Tudor flagship. This included the problem of its raising from the seabed, restoration and preservation of all items found including dating methods. With a fine sense of humour and such an entertaining delivery, Graham certainly was one of our outstanding speakers this year.

The monthly trip was to the Scenic Rim’s Robotic Dairy at Tamrookum which is a family operation of the Dennis family. Everything is automated and robotically operated. The herd of Holstein Friesians can come into the dairy for milking any time. Robots ensure that there is a five hour break in between milking. The entire system is feed based and cows are creatures of habit so they quickly adjust to the system. Sprinklers shower the cows as they enter en route to the milking cage where a laser fits the milking cups to the cow’s udder. During the milking process valuable information is gleaned and recorded e.g. temperature of the animal, percentage of butterfat in the milk and how much is produced, to name just a few data. A robot remembers each cow and makes the necessary adjustments, Because of the fierce competition between retailers, the milk price to farmers was also dropped and to make a living and still be viable, Dennis and Co now process their own milk. This is also automated. It is sold under the label 4 Real Milk.

Salvos appeal to community for support at Christmas As part of The Salvation Army Annual Christmas Appeal 2013, The Salvation Army is seeking the support of local residents and businesses to buy food for distribution to families in the community in need this Christmas.

Each year The Salvation Army conducts its Christmas Appeal where the community is encouraged to give non-perishable food and monetary gifts to help those in need.

The Salvation Army Lake Community Church Leader, Brendan Rule, said, “Non perishable food items are always in high demand at Christmas.”

ICHLAND SCOUT GROUP UPDAT

The Joey Scouts started off our final term for the year learning about communication so we were ready for the JOTA/JOTI camp. Along with abseiling, water activities and radio/internet communication, we met lots of friends from other Mobs around Brisbane and are really excited to be doing combined activities with them now and early into next year.

As always, the Richlands Cub Pack has kept busy this term. The highlight was our Group Camp. The Cubs joined Joey Scouts, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers from around the state in the annual Jamboree of the Air/Internet.

This two night camp gave the Cubs the opportunity to speak with other Scouting Members around the world via dedicated internet chat sites and good old fashioned ham radio. The Cubs reported speaking to others in many different countries. In fact, they were able to communicate with children as close as Stradbroke Island and as far away as the Netherlands. It was a great opportunity to reinforce that Scouting is a world-wide fellowship that unites people from many different cultures and faiths. The camp also provided more traditional Scouting activities such as abseiling, an obstacle course, a campfire sing-along and swimming. In other news, the pack has welcomed new members Hayley, Kien and Jason.

The Scout Troop has been involved in a variety of activities this term. From navigation and light-weight camping skills preparing for our end of term hike to water safety and canoeing. The troop invested Peter as a new Scout. We also installed Lucas as Patrol Leader. The Venturers were hard at work finalising their Constitution before turning their hands to redecorating and spring cleaning the Den ready for the new term. After all of that hard work it was time for some fun. Being teenagers aged between 15 and 17, Venturers are responsible for choosing and planning activities they want to do. Our Venturers are interested in both outdoor Scouting and social activities such as movies, bowling etc. They are always ready to welcome new members and looking for new ideas for things to do.

This month the photo is of the Group at Richlands McDonald’s. We spent the morning of McHappy Day helping to collect donations for Ronald McDonald Charities. While there, the kids had great fun with the staff, dressed as super heroes, playing games and face-painting. The Group provides fun and adventurous activities for young people (both boys and girls) from ages 6 to 17. We rely on the support of our local community and we are currently looking for extra leaders to help grow the group.

I welcome the announcement by the minister for Education, Training and Employment Mr John-Paul Langbroek, of more funding for our local schools as part of the Advancing Our Schools Maintenance Fund.

Our local schools, Grand Avenue State School, Forest Lake State High School and Pallara State School together will receive more than $235,000 for their school maintenance backlog in the 2013-2014 allocations.

Combined with the amount our three local schools received in the 2012-2013 allocation, that brings the total to over $656,000 between 2012 and 2014.

In addition, our Government has relieved schools from having to use Q-Build leaving them free to use outside contractors to complete their maintenance requirements.

This has resulted in major improvements for Grand Avenue State School, Forest Lake State High School and Pallara State School being able to achieve more work for the same cost.

At the end of this month we will, of course, be entering the Christmas holiday period, and an important time to reflect on road safety.

Last month the Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mr Scott Emerson launched the Join The Drive To Save Lives after research indicated that Queenslanders have become desensitised to the traditional ‘shock ads’ commonly seen in relation to road safety.

The Queensland Government wants to hear real stories from real people in a campaign designed to engage with drivers.

You can get involved by uploading messages to the campaign website (www.qld. gov.au/jointhedrive), sharing content, or a simple ‘like’ via social media.

On that note, I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and my staff and I look forward to working with you in the New Year.

Once again we are onboard our favourite coach and heading north for Montville. Most are geared up for a great day.

On the way we stop for morning tea, supplied by our hard working ladies of the committee. As usual we have an assortment of delicious cakes, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed all washed down with a hot cup of coffee or tea.

All settled back onboard we continue our journey to Montville. Today is a free day in as much as there is no planned lunch, which means we can please ourselves where we eat or if we eat.

There is a good range of shops, mostly hand craft for that unusual gift, so we were able to browse the shops, and many purchased early Christmas presents for loved ones and friends, stopping briefly for a spot of lunch.

Alas then it was 2pm, it came so suddenly or at least that’s how it seemed and we all climbed aboard the Concorde Coach to head for home. Everyone, although tired and weary, seemed to be very satisfied with their purchases.

This was our last trip for 2013 and all are looking forward to finding out what next year brings.

Forest Lake 50+ Club meet the third Friday of each month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am, and new members are always welcome.

The Christmas season and your pet How do I find a good boarding kennel or cattery?

There will be times when you choose not to take your pets on holidays with you or you will be unable to take them along. Some pet owners use pet sitters, others choose to board their pets.

What should you look for? Ask for a tour and look for cleanliness. The kennel and cattery workers must be kind to the animals and they must promise to consult your veterinarian should an emergency arise.

If you have an aging or ill pet, boarding your pet with people who are familiar with your pet’s problems and are on hand to monitor any health problems is essential. A good history of any problems and contact numbers of who to contact in an emergency must be given to your pet’s carers.

All kennels and catteries should ask for vaccination records for your pets. Make sure you seek advice from your vet about the correct protection needed. If you aren’t familiar with a reputable kennel, ask your veterinarian for a referral.

Are ticks still around?

Even though it has been dry we are still seeing a lot of tick poisonings around Forest Lake. Please ask your vet what the best prevention is.

Do dogs and cats get sunburn?

Some dogs and cats get sunburn and can develop skin cancers. Just like fair-skinned people, white haired dogs are sensitive to sun exposure especially in thinly haired areas. Cats with white ears and noses are very susceptible to sunburn as well.

It is important to keep cats and dogs inside more on very sunny days and to talk to your veterinarian about the occasional use of sunscreens and early intervention if cancers start to develop. Like us, any suspicious skin lesions should be examined.

Can I take my dog swimming?

Not all dogs are good swimmers. Short-legged dogs, such as Corgis, are very poor swimmers, but most dogs with long legs, such as Labrador Retrievers, swim quite well. Common sense says not to take your dog swimming in dangerous places where the current is too swift, the boat traffic too busy, or where if something went wrong you would both be in danger of drowning.

Do dogs and cats get heat stroke?

Yes, they sure do. Don’t ever leave your pet in the car with the windows rolled up. On very hot days, don’t lock your pet in the garage. Remember that your dog and cat are just as vulnerable to the heat as your children and need to have plenty of water available and a cool place to rest.

If it is hot, take it easy with your pet - play less, run less, cool off more often.

Can I give my dog lots of treats for Christmas?

Be very careful with rich fatty food and alcohol.

Pancreatitis, gastroenteritis and toxicity can ruin your pet’s holidays.

I can’t get rid of these fleas!

of paperwork that relates to your tax returns over the past 10 years. Surely I don’t have to cart all of this to my new abode, you wonder.

Well, that kind of depends on the nature of your tax return. If your tax affairs were very simple, then you only need to keep the relevant documentation for a period of two years after you lodged the tax return to which they relate. That of course begs the question - what is meant by “simple”? If your only income was from salary and wages, a little interest and perhaps a dividend or two then you would pass the test. However, deductions would also have to be limited, for example, donations, cost of managing your tax affairs.

Failing the above, the default period is generally five years after the date of lodgement of your return. This would apply if there were other types of income, perhaps managed funds income, superannuation income streams, rental property income or capital gains, or perhaps deductions such as motor vehicle expenses, income protection insurance etc. I guess if you wanted to err on the side of safety, five years regardless might be the way to go.

However, there is another little detail of which one must be mindful. For example, the ATO requires records relating to the realisation of a capital gain or capital loss to be maintained for a period of five years after the capital gains tax event. You may think that this is no different from the standard five year rule, and generally you would be correct.

However, bear in mind that the calculation of a capital gain or loss essentially involves the deduction of the original cost from the proceeds of sale. You sold that investment property three years ago but you acquired it ten years ago. You had better keep the purchase contract, stamp duty and legal fees documentation for a couple of years before you shred them!

By the way, I moved house last weekend so the above was of some immediate relevance!

Family Focus with Mark Mackay

Mark Mackay is the Baptist pastor at Forest Lake and teaches at Malyon College.

What’s your favourite thing about Christmas? Some of my favourite things are eating white Christmas, watching cricket (my wife never really gets this one!) and having some time off over the holiday season. But, the supreme thing about Christmas is not a thing at all – it’s the person of Jesus Christ!

We so often get caught up in the subsidiary elements of Christmas without seeing the primary reason for the season. So many parts of Christmas point to the nativity but we never get around to seeing the One to whom they point – Candy canes, gift giving, carols are all meant to point us to the child in the manger whom heaven called the Prince of Peace. To not take some time to see Him is a bit like going to a birthday party, enjoying the food, meeting other guests, having a good time but never stopping to acknowledge the one celebrating the birthday.

But, even if you don’t share the Christian faith, the message of Christmas is one worthy of your attention. It is a message of humility, family, peace, sacrifice, joy, hope, community and love. Consider how God chose to announce the birth of Christ not to a king or the wealthy or elite but to poor shepherds. It speaks of the dignity of all humanity.

The message of Christmas is summed up by the angels: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those on whom His favour rests.” (Luke 2:14) The true message of Christmas is that all-important word peace.

Christmas reminds us of God’s desire that we live at peace with one another and peace with Him. The most remarkable thing about this “Christmas peace” is that, though we didn’t deserve it, God initiates this peace through sending Jesus.

On the evening of December 8, the Forest Lake community will join together to celebrate Christmas at the annual carols event. Come along and celebrate the most joyous event in history - bring your family, bring your neighbours. Most of all, consider what the Christmas message might mean for you. Throughout the month of December, the Churches of Forest Lake will be celebrating Christmas. Drop in and celebrate it with us.

Monika (left), mum Paula and Simona (right) celebrate MDS’s 20 years of success at the recent awards presentation night.

For the owner of local dance school, Monika’s Unlimited Dance Studio (MDS), the last twenty years has been the result of a childhood dream and many long days of hard work and determination.

Whilst still in high school, Monika Vuorlahti, along with sister Katrina, choreographed and taught 70 other students the dances for the school musical, giving Monika a taste of what would become her reality just a few short years later.

Having always had the dream to open her own dance studio, Monika registered Monika’s Unlimited Dance Studio in December of 1993, with the first classes being held in 1994. Starting with just 20 students, the school quickly grew and by the end of the first year, over 100 students were enjoying dance classes.

In 2010, Monika’s sister Simona joined the dance studio as partner and now co-runs MDS, helping take the studio from strength to strength. After operating from multiple locations for many years, Monika and Simona made the decision to find one central location and now operates solely from their very own premises, just a short drive from Forest Lake.

Reflecting on the last 20 years and the success of the studio, Monika noted, “Like any business it didn’t happen over night. It’s taken a lot of long days, long hours and commitment.

“Simona and I will continue to grow and develop MDS. We will continue to provide as many opportunities for the students as possible. We take pride in our work and are firm believers of “quality not quantity”.

Garden Group That wonderful season of Christmas is upon us as I recall the words to a popular Christmas carol “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere I go.” Christmas parties, my shopping list for the family, all those extra brochures in the letter box, Santa in the shops and not forgetting the homes that display their Christmas lights are evidence that special night when Santa visits is not far away. I guess the younger ones will be ‘counting the number of sleeps’ before Santa visits.

When making up your list of gifts, don’t forget to include a gift that keeps on giving. I’m talking about a productive pot plant. There are potted plants to suit every pocket both in flowers, vegetables, chillies, cherry tomatoes or even a herb.

Now before we all go Christmas crazy, let’s not forget about our garden. Our gardens seem to get a little forgotten and it is the hottest month of the year.

One of the main solutions is we must be ‘water wise’.

Watering your garden may seem simple enough.

Here are some tips to ensure you make the most of our precious resource.

• Water the gardens deeply and less often – you’ll lose less water through evaporation and your plants will learn to send roots deep into the soil to find moisture, making them less reliant on watering.

• Water in the cool of the morning or evening. Avoid watering disease-susceptible plants at night. With the recent rains, although a blessing and filling our tanks, some plants may be affected by rust.

• Work with nature as there is no need to stick to your watering routine if there has been lots of rain.

If the weather is hot and dry, your garden may need extra water.

Our last bus trip for the year was a wonderful trip to Boonah where five different types of gardens were open and enjoyed by our touring party of 51. From the amount of plants, wine and other items we returned home with, the day was enjoyed by all. I must not forget to mention the ‘country cooking’ we consumed for lunch and morning tea. Watch out for details of our next trip in early 2014 and make sure you receive a flyer.

The last meeting for the year was a fun-filled Christmas party with trivia and the duo who had us all singing along with the carols. There is a rumour going around that some gardeners would like the club to introduce day time meetings in lieu of our current nightly meetings. I am interested in your thoughts in relation to a day time meeting.
