As the weather heats up and the school holidays begin, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Our Forest Lake community has a great assortment of events coming up, headlined by the wonderful Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Carols at St John’s oval. Come along on Sunday 7 December for an exciting evening of multicultural performances, spectacular fireworks, and perhaps even a visit from Santa Claus himself. The Forest Lake Lions will provide sausages and drinks to the crowd which is expected to be more than the 7,000 who attended last year’s festivities.

Last month saw the passing of Wayne Goss, one of the great Premiers of our state. Like all Queenslanders, I am deeply saddened by his passing, and he will be forever remembered as a leader who changed the face of our state. Wayne grew up in our electorate, attending Inala Primary School and Inala State High School before attending the University of Queensland to study law. Wayne helped establish the Caxton Street Legal Service and subsequently the Aboriginal Legal Service in 1973 before entering politics in 1983. For those local who do not know, Wayne also helped launch the development which we now call Forest Lake, providing the government’s stamp of approval to the project on 10 April, 1991. There is no doubt that Wayne was proud of modern-day Forest Lake. A cogent reminder of his principled and humble character came with his final words as Premier: “Thank you, Queensland. You’ve been good to me. I hope I’ve left you a better place.” He most certainly did. Vale Wayne Keith Goss (1951 – 2014). I wish you and your family a very safe and festive holiday season. 3201 1880

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis

Christmas or Xmas? Personally, I really don’t like Xmas; I remember as a child seeing it used for an advertisement and thinking “Cross-mas. That doesn’t make any sense! You’re supposed to be happy not cross at Christmas.” Yes, I was a strange child...and clearly not too bright either! Now, it just annoys me because I generally dislike all abbreviations. Some people get offended, thinking this is another way for society to take the ‘Christ’ out of Christmas, in a season where the meaning is all but obscured by consumerism. It is not, in fact, a deliberate act to withdraw meaning from the season but the X has it’s origins as an abbreviation for Christ going way back to our Greek friends in days long gone. In advertising, I tend to think it’s a matter of trying to make a longish word fit; and in handwriting, I’m sure it’s because we would all rather be lazy! Neither of which are looking to take the meaning of the word away but are instead, focused on convenience. You see, the only way for meaning to be extracted from something is if the observer or participant allows it to be taken. How the word is written should have no bearing on how we all perceive it, or, for that matter, enjoy and celebrate it. It’s easy not to focus on the real meaning of Christmas at Christmas time. It’s busy. It’s hot. The kids are home on holidays (and are quite possibly bored and exhausting!). A host of family get-togethers are organised. Food needs to be prepared. Presents need to be bought. And on it goes. Yes, it’s very easy to just let the meaning of the whole thing slide right on by without a second glance. Yet, finding a little time to contemplate the ‘reason for the season’ might just help you get through all that busyness with a smile. Acknowledging that it’s a season of peace, of love and giving can stop us in our busyness and give us pause, reminding us that there is more to life than presents, food and endless streams of family and guests. If we do take the time to think about it a little, and allow the real meaning of the baby born in a manger to sink in, we might find that it can impact more than just the Christmas season. We might find that it can make a very real difference to the coming year. It might change us so that our relationships are enriched, our lives are fuller and that longing within all of us to have purpose and meaning is finally fulfilled. Will you pause this Christmas? Will you step aside to ponder and really think about what it all means? I hope you do. And I hope you find peace, love and joy not only this Christmas season, but your whole life long.

By Dr Paul Holliday

Do I really need a checkup? I was asked recently by a regular visitor – do I really need a check up? She told me that she has a good toothbrush and now, after regular nagging by us, also flosses every day so she shouldn’t need a regular checkup. We talked about it and she realised that the benefits to her overall health are worth a trip to the dentist every six months. There is no longer any question in the medical/dental world over the direct links between periodontal disease (which I call the silent gum disease because most people never know they have it) and systemic diseases such as strokes, heart disease, diabetes and even Alzheimer’s disease and low birth weight in babies. Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are not just about cleaning and polishing the teeth. It’s about your overall health and well-being. Regular maintenance usually means that any small problems can be fixed or prevented before they become big expensive or very painful problems. X-rays are needed every couple of years to check between the teeth and under the gums where you can’t see. Without any x-rays, all sorts of things could be going on out of sight. The diagnostic laser helps but it can’t see under the gums either. Children’s teeth are changing all the time and they also should have a regular dental checkup. Checking how the baby teeth are falling out and the positioning of the new permanent teeth could allow us to start interceptive orthodontic treatment early to prevent major problems later on. It is much better to help straighten teeth if they are growing in crooked than to simply wait till all the baby teeth are gone and then look at fixing the problems. Also it’s important to check how well they are brushing – do you really know they are brushing their teeth or are they just wetting the toothbrush and having a bit of a chew on it? Even though holes are easy to fix these days, it is better to prevent them before they become holes. Regular fluoride on kid’s teeth helps protect both baby and adult teeth against decay. Someone from South Africa recently told me about their health fund insurance back home. They give dental bonuses or discounted premiums to everyone who visits their dentist for regular checkups at least twice a year. Obviously they have realised the value of regular dental checkups or they wouldn’t offer such a scheme. Ultimately it’s up to you. What do you want for your teeth or your child’s teeth? That is the question. We will keep recommending regular dental checkups for your dental health (meaning the teeth, gums, jaw bone health, jaw joint health, bite health etc) and general health and well being.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach

The race that stopped a nation was celebrated by some Probians at the Broncos Club on the said day. November was our final general meeting for this year as in December we celebrate Christmas at The Mt Ommaney Lodge. We also had a visit from a special guest who came to support his sister who was being inducted as one of our new Club members. Our visitor was Douglas Geekie, President-elect 2015-2016 Probus South Pacific Limited, Probus governing body. Our guest speaker for the month was Dawn Muir whose topic was ‘Birds and their Nests’.It was her second visit to the Club. Previously she concentrated on ‘Birds of Queensland’. There was some overlapping facts from her previous talk in April. The Rufous Fantail uses cobwebs and twigs to weave its nest. It is like recycling the trap of a spider and humans thought they invented recycling! Another recycler is the Black-faced Cuckoo Shrike who decorates its nest with lichen. The Raptors put fresh eucalyptus leaves in their nests to act as air freshener cum disinfectant. When baby birds mess and drop leftovers, mostly ‘meaty bits’ in the nest, unpleasant odours could develop. We learnt that Noisy Mynah birds make different sounds depending on what they see eg there is a different call when there is a snake about. So do be careful when interpreting the term ‘bird brain’! The Club would like to congratulate and thank Dan and Julie Baldwin of National Seniors and all their members for the wonderful effort of assisting our farmers with collecting food parcels to which some Probians did contribute. It is gratifying to note that Queenslanders still uphold their reputation of lending a hand when needed. The Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc would also like to thank all our supporters and businesses alike, including our local Councillors and Members of Parliament, for their assistance throughout the year. Your help whether financial or otherwise is greatly appreciated. A special thank you to the Lake News too! We wish you all, including all residents of this wonderful suburb, compliments of the season, a merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. Do stay safe and look out for each other. Probus is a Club for retired and semi-retired people who are still young at heart, want to delay the ageing process by being active socially and mentally and thus come and join us. You can try before you buy! We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 10 am at the Forest Lake Hotel. See you in the New Year! More information on page 31 of this publication.

A life-saving defibrillator has been installed at Forest Lake Shopping Centre. The centre worked closely with the Forest Lake 50+ club to provide the defibrillator. The device has the potential to save lives as it can be used to restart the heart of anyone suffering a cardiac arrest. Centre Manager, Joanne Aston, stated that according to the Heart Foundation, around 55,000 Australians suffer a heart attack each year. “To have this device available to us in such a busy centre means that we will be able to react quickly to assist anyone suffering a heart attack. Those vital first few minutes can make all the difference to someone’s chances of survival,” she said. “This vital equipment comes with full verbal instructions and is simple to use, so anyone at the scene has the ability to save a life. As part of our commitment to saving lives, we have arranged training for our centre management staff and security team. We want our staff to feel confident in the use of this equipment in the event of a genuine emergency.” The defibrillator is fully portable and has been installed in a central position near the Gloria Jean’s entrance.

Longest drive winners, A Grade Colin Brooke, B grade Bob Brose, C Grade Jean O’Brien. Approach shot Colin Brooke and nearest the pin winners Brian Cruickshank and Don Pickwick. Photos snapped by a resident walking around the lake recently reveals a disappointing lack of concern and consideration, not only for other residents, but for our environment and surroundings. If you see litter that needs to be removed by council, please call Cr Angela Owen-Taylor’s office on 3131 7022. Farmers thankful for donations and support by Julie Baldwin

Readers will remember some past articles about the Farmer’s Appeal spearheaded by various National Seniors branches. Graham Brewer of Calamvale Branch with the willing participation of Centenary and Forest Lake Branches set to and raised some money and also requested donations of nonperishables. The response was very good and people were generous. Graham was able to get a truck through Avis Rental with fuel being their only cost. The two men Corny Van Eldik and Graham headed west to St George to help distribute the collection. On his return Graham felt it was essential to make another trip out before Christmas. He spoke at many venues, including other Branches, and the community at large about another trip. Over a period of weeks Graham has worked very hard collecting donations, doing speaking engagements at which donations were made to boost the cash target. Cash donations collected will be turned into vouchers by Care Balonne St George to be spent in the local businesses. Dan Baldwin of Forest Lake Branch with his enthusiastic band of volunteers manned a stall in the Forest Lake Shopping Centre for 18 days straight taking three to five trolley loads away each day to store in member Barry Weston’s garage or Dan’s home ready for packing in the now famous banana boxes with loads of packing tape keeping the contents secure. Dan visited our good friends at Sunnybank Branch to collect an enormous car full of donations from the lovely people at Sunnybank. Many, many pallets of packed boxes have been freighted to St George via St George Freight Lines. Robyn Fuhrmeister and Staff in St George at Care Balonne has taken delivery of all the pallets with boxes and boxes of donations and her many volunteers have packed items and been busy making deliveries to families. It has been a wonderful opportunity for our community to really come together in support of our country cousins. For the volunteers living in our community it has been such a pleasure to be involved and many have remarked how lovely it has been to chat to people of all ages they would not otherwise have met in our busy lives. Our presence in the shopping centre was made possible by the generosity of Coles Supermarket and Forest Lake Shopping Centre. Heritage Bank, Forest Lake Branch also were happy to have a collection tin inside the Bank. Thank you all for your support. Many thanks to all. The country folk applaud you. What you have all done has helped restore the country folks faith in our country and its people.

There are a few reoccurring problems that seem to appear every December that are worth being aware of and preventing. • Heat Stress. This is often caused by a number of factors rather than just heat. Overweight, old, sick, black coated and brachycephalic (flat faced) dogs are more prone to overheating but I have seen it in fit healthy breeds like Border Collies who do not know when to stop. Always be aware of shade, ventilation and access to water when leaving your pet unattended. • Pancreatitis. Dogs, and to a lesser degree cats, are prone to this unpleasant condition. Predisposing factors are related to fat metabolism. Being overweight, eating fatty foods, having a fatty liver and being on cortisone puts pets in the higher risk category. At this time of the year, rich foods around Christmas Day and letting your dog help clean out the fridge are other factors. • Ticks, snakes and cane toads. Ticks have been present in the Forest Lake area for the last few months – make sure you talk to your vet about your pet’s risk and about the best prevention. Snakes are normally worse in very hot, dry weather. We have seen an increasing number of Red Bellied Black snake bites in the last few years. Cane toads are worse in wet weather. Terriers are the most affected dog poisoned by snakes and toads – they are on to anything that moves. If you hear your terrier constantly barking, go and carefully investigate. Cats are very commonly bitten by snakes due to their hunting instincts. • Canine Cough and other viruses. Make sure your pets are up to date with their Canine Cough and Distemper, Parvo and Hepatitis vaccinations especially before going into kennels. If they are overdue, try to have the booster done at least two weeks before dropping off at the kennels. • Lost Pets. Many pets become separated from their owners for various reasons. Running away during storms or New Year fireworks, Christmas travel and gates being left open during the holidays are a few reasons. Take any found pets to your local vet or refuge to be scanned for a microchip. If the pet has a microchip, the owners contact details can be found within minutes. Please make sure your pet’s details are up to date. All vets can check this for you if you are not sure. I hope you and your pets have a safe and happy Christmas.

New Community Hall underway

Parkinson Ward Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor has announced the $2 million Forest Lake Community Hall is ready to proceed with designs for the building now released. “I am pleased to announce the final designs for the Forest Lake Community Hall have been released,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. The new community hall will be built taking into consideration nearby residents, with the location being oriented along the College Avenue side of the land and fronting the existing carpark. The community hall will provide easy access to people of all abilities and the facilities will include hall space and a balcony for up to 130 people, two meeting rooms, kitchen, toilets and storage. The community hall has been designed based on feedback from many local community organisations which have been searching for a permanent home in Forest Lake. The development application process will commence in early 2015 with construction starting mid-year. “I look forward to construction going well, with the new community hall anticipated to be open by late 2015. “During construction there may be some disruption to car parking facilities on site, however we will endeavour to keep this to a minimum. The Lord Mayor and I are committed to delivering this facility within this four year term. “The Community Hall is about creating opportunities for local clubs and organisations to have a home base in the suburb and for locals to have easy access to participate in activities. “I am pleased to ensure this facility is being built for our local community and I know it will serve the community well for many years to come,” concluded Cr Angela Owen-Taylor.

WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.

Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues

Those of you who know me well will be aware of my allegiance to a certain English Premier League side whose fortunes have been somewhat erratic over the past several years. However, I don’t think I will be swapping my support to follow another club any time soon, and I am sure the same goes for those who follow rugby league and AFL teams. There are times when it comes to investment that one might look at performance and become disillusioned about mediocre performance which has fallen short of expectation. This might apply to the general form of investment, perhaps property versus shares, or the particular fund manager with whom one has entrusted hard earned savings. When it comes to fund managers, how easy is it today with the plethora of statistics that are published and readily available to compare Fund A with Fund B and wish you had placed your money with Fund B that earned 3% more last month, last quarter or last year. This is, of course, analogous to looking at the short term performance of your football team. Perhaps over the past month there has been only one win amongst two losses and a draw. However, over the whole season, or perhaps several seasons, such performance should be put in the perspective of losses in only 15% of their games as compared with a 50% loss rate over the past four games only. It is easy to look at things in hindsight and be disillusioned with what is happening in the short term. A ship on a long journey may encounter some severe storms along the way but its ultimate destination is known and locked in. The storms were something that was expected at some stage of the journey, yet they did not prevent the ship leaving its home port. When it comes to long term investment, a similar view should be taken. Provided your long term goals and aspirations were sound, and you do maintain some degree of flexibility from time to time, there is normally little reason to change course. The issue is not whether, with the benefit of hindsight, you could have had one percent more had you been with Fund B throughout, but that you invested wisely over the long term in the first place. Meanwhile, I look forward to a victory in my team’s next Premier League fixture!

We Wish you a Merry Christmas We wish you a merry Christmas We wish you a merry Christmas We wish you a merry Christmas And a Happy New Year. Good tidings we bring To you and your kin Good tidings for Christmas And a happy New Year. (Repeat)

Away in a Manger Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh. Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay, Close by me forever, and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children, in Thy tender care And take us to heaven, to live with thee there.

O Come, All Ye Faithful O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold him, born the King of angels; - RefrainO come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal, Lo, he shuns not the Virgin’s womb; Son of the Father, begotten not created; - RefrainSing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation; O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest; - RefrainSee how the shepherds, summoned to his cradle, Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze; We too will thither bend our joyful footsteps; - RefrainChild, for us sinners poor and in the manger, We would embrace thee with love and awe. Who would not love thee, loving us so dearly? - RefrainYea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning, Jesus, to thee be all glory given. Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing. - Refrain-

Aussie Jingle Bells

Joy to the World

Dashing through the bush, in a rusty Holden Ute, Kicking up the dust, esky in the boot, Kelpie by my side, singing Christmas songs, It’s Summer time and I am in my singlet, shorts and thongs.

Joy to the world! The Lord is come; Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

CHORUS Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, Christmas in Australia, on a scorching summers day, Hey! Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!, Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute. Engine’s getting hot; we dodge the kangaroos, The swaggie climbs aboard, he is welcome too. All the family’s there, sitting by the pool, Christmas Day the Aussie way, by the barbecue. Come the afternoon, Grandpa has a doze, The kids and Uncle Bruce, are swimming in their clothes . The time comes ‘round to go, we take the family snap, Pack the car and all shoot through, before the washing up.

Forest Lake Crochet group members greatly appreciated the recent donation of $500 from Settlers to purchase wool for their ever growing list of charities to give rugs and other handmade goods to. The group, that now has over 38 regular members, has contributed 100’s of items over the 16 months they’ve been up and running. Not limiting themselves to crochet and knitted items, members also contributed significantly to the National Seniors ‘Support the Farmers’ appeal with members donating canned goods, toys for children and toiletries, among many other items. The group will take a break from December 11 and start again in the new year on January 15. Family Focus with Mark Mackay

Mark Mackay is one of the Baptist pastors in Forest Lake Christmas is just around the corner again. Is it just me or is it arriving quicker and quicker each year? Christmas is a beautiful and special time because it is one of the greatest times of year for people to cross their boundaries and connect with their neighbours. Our lives are so busy and our family schedules are so full that we can go weeks, months, even years without saying ‘hi’ to our neighbours. But there is great potential in simply saying “hi.” Universities have studied the impact of simple greetings and found they make people generally happier and they are more likely to then pass the same greeting on to someone else. Christmas is a great time to cross the fence and meet that neighbour you’ve only ever nodded to. Go over there and do a good deed, help them out, show them you care. Christmas is all about going the extra mile, going out of your way to love someone else. The Christmas example par excellence was Jesus who came as a baby, grew as a man, died and rose again to be the Saviour of the World, the Prince of Peace. Why not invite your neighbour to the Community Carols on 7 December or to one of the Christmas Church services at a church listed at the back of this magazine. On behalf of my family and our church, we pray you have a blessed and joyful Christmas, surrounded by family, friends and neighbours.

Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin As an exciting, fun filled 2014 draws to a close and with our photo album bulging with great memories, we are all looking forward to our Christmas Lunch and Meeting to be held at the Richlands Tavern on 10 December commencing at 10am. Bookings and prepayment for the lunch are essential. Forest Lake Branch provides National Seniors members in Forest Lake and its surrounding suburbs with an opportunity to get together to meet new people, enjoy social outings and also to have their say and be informed on important issues that affect over 50s. Visitors are always welcome. The Farmers Relief Appeal has been a wonderful opportunity for our community to lend a helping hand to our fellow Australians way out west in the Balonne Shire. Support for this appeal has been absolutely wonderful and we extend our sincere thanks to all contributors for their kindness and generosity.

Broncos Melbourne Cup Seafood Lunch last month was a great day out. A bus full of chatty members and friends dressed in their finery got into the spirit of the day and really enjoyed themselves. We were joined by an equally excited and friendly group from Forest Lake Probus. A few ladies and gents entered in the fashion competition. Barry was a clear winner in his very smart outfit complete with stylish fedora. Everyone looked fabulous on the day. Barry’s Sweeps proved a winner, congratulations to the lucky ones. Our seafood buffet lunch was delicious. The entertainer was enjoyable with lots of familiar songs to entertain and some of us stepped on to the dance floor for a bit of fun. We were very fortunate to have yet another very interesting guest speaker at the November meeting: Mr Frank Levey, Queensland Rail Travel. Frank’s presentation was so lively and informative we just wanted to jump onboard a train right away. Exciting things are in store in 2015. Monthly meetings recommence in February 2015, second Wednesday, February 11, with a fantastic, fun filled calendar of events lined up. To everyone we wish a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to a bright and cheerful 2015. To Susannah and her staff at The Lake News, warm wishes and grateful thanks from us. For further information about our Branch please contact either Julie 3278 7274 or Val 3372 4405. Please visit our Branch Website at: www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au/.

The G20 weekend proved fruitful for thieves who broke into the home of a recently widowed 83 year old Forest Lake resident, stealing precious wedding rings and jewellery, while she was in hospital. The woman’s daughters are now tasked with telling her the devastating news that the treasured symbols of a blissful 60-year union with her husband, who passed away in May this year, are gone and they fear the shock will be too much for her to bare. While the callous thieves stole a lifetime of jewellery including watches, antique brooches and other rings, it is the wedding rings that the family is most keen to recover for their sentimental value and the link to the woman’s recently deceased husband. These rings are all 18ct yellow gold, while the engagement ring is distinctive with a centre diamond close to one carat in size surrounded by 12 smaller diamonds set in a leaf pattern. There are two eternity rings with five diamonds in each. Plus, a plain yellow gold male wedding band with a bevelled edge. Anyone who sees these rings, or has information to help find them and reunite them with their widowed, pensioner owner, please contact: Forest Lake Police on 3710 1344 and quote Police Report No: QP1401597658, Crimestoppers on1800 333 000, or the office of The Lake News on 3201 1880.

Hello Readers St John’s students are being well prepared for their role as global citizens in the 21st Century. It is our desire to assist our students, not only in achieving their very best academically and seeing them thrive in the cultural, sporting and social aspects of our school community, but also introduce to them to a global community through enhancing our teaching programs. To be successful as adults in the workplace and in community life, our students will not only need to be highly literate in English and Mathematics, but they will also need to learn more about other countries than text books can provide. Real world experiences will teach them to be culturally sensitive, socially and emotionally competent and able to work in multi cultural teams. All of these skills are being developed in St John’s students. This year we have further developed our sister school links with Chinese schools in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Tianjin. On a recent school trip to China, our students spent time in these sister schools visiting classrooms and working together with Chinese students. This real life experience generated a lot of interest and excitement for our travellers. A partnership with our sister school in Shenzen, China presently sees primary aged students from Shenzhen Nanshan Bilingual School spend an entire term in our Primary classes, immersed in English lessons and conversing with our students. This program also allows the children from St John’s to practice their Chinese speaking skills as well as gain a greater understanding of the Chinese culture.

A place for INNOVATION

Two St John’s students were selected to travel to Tokyo and regional cities this year to participate in the Jenesys 2.0 Cultural Appreciation Program. Links with Kobe University Secondary School in Japan are also being established by St John’s.

St John’s is a collaborative, online, interconnected learning community.

As part of our commitment to developing deeper understandings for our staff and students in Chinese language and culture, our partnership with the Confucius Institute based at the University of Queensland has enabled our Head of Humanities Dr Odendaal to travel to Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin experiencing the Chinese language and culture first-hand. A volunteer teacher Judy Xiao from Shanghai University has also worked with small groups in our Chinese language classes in the primary and secondary classrooms to develop their speaking and listening skills. If you would like to know more about a St John’s education for your child, please contact our Registrar, Janette Collins 07 3372 0113 to arrange a time for your personal tour.

Our teachers motivate their students to use new technologies, to source real time information and to create and publish their work. They are being well prepared for a rapidly changing future.

STATE MEMBER FOR ALGESTER

It was a pleasure to welcome so many families to the Grand Ave State School Cinema in the Suburbs event which I was able to sponsor. Many parents both on the night and afterwards spoke to me about how great it was to have such an event for the community. As you know, Brisbane has just played host to the G20, and student leaders from our very own Forest Lake State High School had the opportunity to be a part of President Obama’s Historical speech at the University of Queensland. I was excited to be able to deliver the much sought after presidential tickets to Forest Lake State High School’s Deputy Principal, Ms Hamill. With Christmas just around the corner I want to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who do such sterling work in our community. I would like to wish all residents a safe and joy filled Christmas. Be careful on the roads if you are travelling and I look forward to catching up with you at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre or a local street corner in 2015.

Forest Lake Lions Club update by Kim Grierson

Christmas Cakes – yes it is that time of year. The Forest Lake Lions are now selling cakes and puddings. 1kg cakes are $12, 1.5kg cakes are $16 and plum puddings are $12. If you would like a cake or pudding you can email me at liongreos@gmail.com or phone me on 0421 281 718 (we are happy to deliver in the local area). We will also be selling them soon at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre. The Forest Lake Lions were very proud to assist the National Senior’s initiative ‘Supporting Farming Families’ by donating 53 Christmas Cakes and a box of toiletry items. Bridging Communities – on the 19th October representatives from most of the Forest Lake area community groups attended an afternoon tea at the Richlands Hotel. The aim of the afternoon was to meet other like minded people doing community work in our area to encourage networking opportunities, discuss current and upcoming projects and to discuss how we can work together in our community. Funding was received from the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund via a very supportive Milton Dick (Councillor for the Richlands Ward). Thanks heaps Milton! The funding went towards the room hire at the Richlands Hotel with a lovely afternoon tea of sandwiches, slices and fruit provided. Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor (Parkinson Ward) was also in attendance. If you would like further information on this Lions initiative, don’t hesitate to email me at liongreos@gmail.com. Bikes4Life – thanks to all who have called me re unwanted bikes. I am still collecting, so if you have a spare bike in any condition let me know and we are happy to collect. Bikes will be going to help the less fortunate in the Cape York area.

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go” are the opening words to one of the more popular Christmas songs and it is true at the moment. Wherever we look Christmas lights, Christmas parties, decorations in the department stores, advertising on television and in the press who are all telling us where to buy our Christmas gifts. Not forgetting, our letter boxes are filled with so many different Christmas catalogues that seem to increase each year. Looking at all the battery powered toys available and their cost, I’m thinking of giving the children some batteries with a note attached saying “Toys not included!” On behalf of the garden club, I’m pleased to announce that Crossacres Garden Centre, 58 Crossacres Street, Doolandella will be the club’s sponsor in 2015. Sincere thanks to Col and his team for their valuable support. Why not give a friend or relative a productive plant from Crossacres Garden Centre? This is one gift that will keep on giving. Also we must remember to support our local nursery. Now before we get carried away with another festive season, parties and holidays, let’s not forget about our garden as this is the hottest month of the year. We would all appreciate more rain as our tanks are nearing empty if not already. Topping up the mulch, especially if you are going on holidays, is important in assisting the moisture be maintained longer for all plants as they grow throughout the hot summer days. Remember not to place the mulch up against the plant stems. Why not add some water crystals? Water deeply as this will encourage the roots to go further into the soil to find the moisture. Water in the cool of the morning or evening but avoid watering disease-susceptible plants at night. Another helpful hint is to raise the mower height during the warmer weather as longer grass means cooler soil at the root level. Also the slightly longer grass will reduce the risk of weeds growing through the lawn. The big change coming in 2015 is that our meetings will now be held on the first Tuesday of the month (February to December) at the Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Road, Ellen Grove commencing at 10am. Morning tea will be served from 9.30am. Watch for the list of interesting guest speakers, bus trips and garden visits coming in 2015. Thanks to The Lake News for their support throughout the year. Wishing all readers a very Merry Christmas, a safe and happy New Year and hoping you can make it to our first day-time meeting in February. Remember the best Christmas gift is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us! Next meeting Tuesday February 3rd at 10.00am Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove

For more information call John Prout on 3288 3131

From the desk of Angela Owen-Taylor Parkinson Ward Councillor Firstly, I would like to extend to all residents my best wishes for the Christmas season and a special thank you to all our local police officers, ambulance officers, fire and rescue officers, Council officers, doctors, nurses and hospital workers who continue to work throughout Christmas. Thank you also to all State Emergency Service personnel who are also on standby if we need assistance. Baby’s First Christmas will be held at the Unidus Community Centre at 204 Sherbrooke Rd, Willawong on 6 December at 9am, so come along and join with me as I welcome these new additions to our community and present them with a specially cast medallion and certificate. If you have a new baby in your family you can register via my office. Immediately following Baby’s First Christmas will be Christmas 4 Kids at 10am in the same location so please bring the whole family along for a great day. Community Christmas in the Park will be held Saturday 6 December from 4-8pm at Calamvale District Park, Formby St, Calamvale which will include a Dog’s Christmas event with parade, Christmas Carols by Blonde Chocolate, a visit by Santa, free face painting for the children, food stalls and a free Movie in the Park which will be RIO 2. I hope you and your family can come along and join us. To all the students graduating from our local schools, I wish you all success in your future endeavours and to all students who received awards at the recent award nights I attended, I commend you on your hard work and achievements. Recently, Council officers have been undertaking investigations into the airflow of the pump system which creates the water fountain from the dragon and the water flow through the Cascades. As the pipes are underground and, in some parts, under water, it has been a long process to try to isolate where some blockages have been occurring. Due to the age of the pump system, it is now necessary to undertake further repair work which will require some excavation near the end of Seychelles Lane within the Forest Lake Parklands. We will endeavour to minimize disruption to walking paths as much as possible. My office will be closed from close of business Thursday 18 December 2014 and will reopen on Monday 12 January, so my hardworking staff can enjoy some time with their families and any residents requiring assistance during this time can contact the Call Centre on 3403 8888. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club’s last outing for this year was to the Kingston Butter Factory. Sixty-six members boarded our Concorde Coaches and eagerly headed off on a beautiful November morning. On arrival at The Butter Factory, a wonderful morning tea was ready and waiting for us. We then explored their extensive art and craft display including the Logan City Historical Society Museum, which brought back a lot of memories. Many a Christmas present was purchased from their fabulous arts and craft shop. With full shopping bags in hand, we made our way to The Greenbank R.S.L for lunch and a flutter on the Pokies. Like all good things that come to an end, it was time to make our way back home to finish off a really enjoyable day out. The Clubs Committee and members would like to pass on their appreciation to Heritage Bank Community Branch Forest Lake for their assistance in the construction of a storage facility located at The Uniting Church Community Life Centre. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club Committee would like to wish its members and The Lake News readers a very merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2015. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. New members are most welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Kay (Treasurer) on 3278 9406 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618, or email fl50plusc@gmail.com.
