The Returned Services League (RSL) is a member organisation that provides crucial services such as free entitlement advice and advocacy services; low cost and emergency housing; financial support services; home and hospital visits; and veteran research. Its members, and in particular the generous volunteers who give their time to fill committee positions, do so to enrich the lives of people who have served our country, and are now in need of some help themselves. Like most community groups, our local Forest Lake Sub Branch has been operating for 16 years at the hands of a small group of dedicated volunteers; themselves ex-serving members. Whilst most are keen to continue serving the Forest Lake Sub Branch in some way, they are reaching a stage in their own lives where a full time commitment is more than they can give. Over the years, RSL members and volunteers have been overwhelmed by the interest and participation of the younger generations in supporting the commemoration of ANZAC. Whilst ANZAC forms a very important part of RSL’s annual calendar, it is but one of many commemorative services and functions the RSL facilitates each year that enriches the lives of ex-serving members and their families. Today as we approach the centennial commemoration of ANZAC in April 2015, the local Forest Lake Sub Branch is calling for assistance in the form of both manpower and administration. If you can spare some time to help some old diggers to support their mates, would you please call Peter Foley, Secretary of the Forest Lake RSL Sub Branch to register your interest on 0412 357 756. 2015 is the Centenary of ANZAC and RSLs around Australia and organisations around the world even, will be striving to make local parades and services more special than usual. The Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch will be no different and we are looking towards staging a bigger and better parade and service in the newly refurbished Amphitheatre. Groups, clubs and organisations wishing to march should contact Peter Foley on the above number. The Sub-branch will be manning stalls to sell badges and memorabilia as usual and we desperately need volunteers to assist. Please let us know if you can help. We are also seeking a band to play for us on the day. Do you know of one?

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Somewhere in the week between Christmas and New Years, my washing machine broke. And when I say broke, I mean it would fill the tub full of water and then refuse to wash, leaving me with a load of sopping wet clothes and limited means to rectify the situation. To say I was annoyed and frustrated would be an understatement. After having guests and a full house over Christmas, I subsequently faced piles of dirty sheets, tablecloths, towels and clothes laying about my laundry. Even though I took a few loads of essentials to a friend’s house and used her machine while I waited the week and a half it took for the part to come in and the repairman to come back and fix it, there was a backlog of washing to be done. One of my husband’s well used phrases is ‘playing catch up’. It has a myriad of applications and certainly applies here! I hate ‘playing catch up’ of any sort. Whether it’s coming back to an overflowing inbox after a holiday, washing when it’s been raining (or a broken machine!), weeding the garden or the piles of washing up and dishwasher duties after a weekend of entertaining. Another circumstance in which we say ‘catch up’ is with regard to friends. And I have to be honest, this is something I would actually rather not do. Let me explain. The fact that I need to ‘catch up’ on my friends lives, says to me that I haven’t seen them enough to keep up to date on what’s happening with them. If my life is too busy to hear about the everyday things that happen in the lives of those I love, then maybe I need to refocus my life and where my time is spent. Of course, it’s wonderful, and necessary, to spend longer chunks of time with people to really hear where they’re at and how they are travelling, but when we’ve left it so long that there are the metaphorical piles of washing strewn about, it should be a warning to us that we aren’t investing enough in those around us. And in our marriages, where jobs, kids, other family, friends and commitments, all take up our time, we can find ourselves never delving deeper than the logistics of life i.e. what’s for dinner, who’s taking who to dance, sport or music lessons. Before we know it, we need to ‘catch up’ on our spouse. It’s easy to let things pile up and get behind in our relationships and often, our only fault is a lack of intentional connection. It takes time to ask the deeper questions, just as it takes time to put a load of washing on, hang it out, fold it and put it away. But just as it takes a lot more time to catch up on washing after the machine breaks down, it takes a lot more time to repair a relationship after an extended time of only relating on a surface level. Why not resolve this year to be more intentional with your relationships? Putting a load on every day is more beneficial to everyone than having to do load upon load trying to catch up.

Be a sweetheart this Valentine’s Day HeartKids Australia is offering ‘sweethearts’ around the nation a new way to show their love this Valentine’s Day, while also raising much-needed funds to fight childhood heart disease - the biggest cause of death of children under the age of one. HeartKids Australia’s Sweetheart Day on Saturday, February 14 allows anyone to demonstrate their love for a partner, friend or family member – no matter where they are in the world – by sending them a virtual gift donation via www. sweetheartday.org.au. The funds contribute to the national charity’s support, research, advocacy and awareness work. Childhood heart disease is not a single condition; it includes a wide range of heart defects which a child is born with or develops in childhood as a result of other illnesses. Some cases require major heart surgery within days of a child’s birth, while others remain undiagnosed until adolescence or adulthood. Eight babies a day are born with a heart defect in Australia. “Sweetheart Day is the charitable way to turn some of the money we would normally spend on Valentine’s Day presents into tangible benefits for kids in need, such as funding for life-saving research or family support during surgeries and treatments. The purchase of a virtual gift sends a message of love to those you care for, as well as the thousands of heartkids’ families around Australia,” said Jann Kingston, CEO of HeartKids Australia. “For the families of babies born with heart defects, the emotional and financial stress is profound. While the scope of childhood heart disease is broad, some children born with heart defects will undergo open heart surgery in the first few days of their life,” added Kingston. “However, surgery is not a cure. Children with CHD will face unique challenges for their entire lives. This may include ongoing medical treatment and repeated heart surgeries. The disease is for life, once a heartkid always a heartkid.” HeartKids helps families through every step of their journey. Sweetheart Day aims to raise the funds needed to provide this support, as well as help fund research into the causes, treatment and management of heart defects and broaden awareness of Childhood Heart Disease in Australia.

Your Teeth Your Smile

Dental
By Dr Paul Holliday
Look good, feel great Do you think of dentistry when someone says they want to look good and feel great? Probably not. You might think about getting some exercise, maybe going to the gym or going shopping for new clothes. Being a dentist I naturally think about how dentistry can help change your smile, your gums, your bite, sometimes even more. Often we take our mouths for granted. They get a lot of use (sometimes they get too much use, don’t they?). There are lots of ways modern dentistry can help you look good and feel great this summer. If you are happy with your smile but not the colour, it may just take some whitening to brighten and freshen your smile. The difference can be amazing and such a simple thing will make people ask what you did to your smile. If your teeth are crooked, there is orthodontics to correct the problem. Through orthodontics you can have the smile you want. This can make your teeth look good but it can also make everything function better as well. Most people think it’s just for kids but you can have orthodontics at any age. Orthodontics is not instant but in the long term can certainly be life changing. If you don’t like the shape or colour of your teeth there are veneers. They provide an almost instant change to the colour and the shape of your teeth. If you don’t like the silver/black fillings then these can be replaced with a variety of tooth coloured materials. These vary in size and complexity and really depend on your own very personal condition to determine the best alternative for both aesthetics and function. Gums are the foundation for your smile, so while you may sometimes forget about them, we certainly don’t. That is why we ask lots of annoying questions like “How often do you floss?” I know...you always floss but seriously flossing is important to maintain the health of your gums (as well as the health of your heart). Research has shown a relationship between unhealthy gums and heart problems and strokes. So when we tell you flossing is good for you, we mean it. Even though you brush and floss regularly you still may have gum problems and need some soft tissue therapy. That’s a nice way of saying we remove all the germs and bacteria around and under the gums so they can be healthy and happy again. Since everyone is different, the best approach to improve things needs careful evaluation. The best approach may be a combination of things to suit your lifestyle and your goals for an improved smile or a better bite. If you want more information, call our friendly team at Lakedental. We pride ourselves on taking care of you. Now it’s up to you to look good and feel great.

Under New Management! Readers might remember an article in the August edition of The Lake News, 2013 about local boy, Ethan who was born with a rare chromosomal disorder known as dup15q syndrome. There are less than 30 registered cases in Australia and less than 1000 worldwide. As a result of his condition, Ethan has autism, seizures, low muscle tone, sensory processing disorder, developmental and speech delay, anxiety and behavioural issues. Ethan enjoys swimming, riding his bike around the lake and playing with his school friend and younger brother Luke. On 8 February, a fundraising day will be held at Simpson Falls which will consist of four walk/run hikes, start time is 6.15am. Entry is a minimum $10 donation for adults with all funds raised going towards Ethan’s medical expenses. “We are seeking local support to raise funds to assist with ongoing medical expenses including speech and occupational therapies, psychology and behavioural services, neurological, genetic and other specialist appointments,” said joint event organiser Graeme Rundle. “The plan is to meet back at Simpsons Falls Picnic area for the walk and stay for the lucky draw prizes and have a coffee, muffin, fruit, sausages sizzle... and most importantly to meet the Ethan and his family.” Participants are encouraged to turn up on the day, no need to register. Please remember to bring plenty of water and be sun safe. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ events/1494139227516682/ or contact joint event organiser Angie Reeves on 0433 994 555. Abel & David Wan Dental Practice Some readers might remember an article in The Lake News, May 2013, about a group of Forest Lake residents making pillowcases for children in oncology wards. Local resident Una Gray is keen to hear from people who could help in this ongoing, worthwhile project. With over 500 pillowcases already donated since the group began in earnest two years ago, the group suffered last year from a lack of funds and the loss of the use of the leisure centre at The Terraces. A $2000 grant from Heritage Community Branch Forest Lake was applied for and approved which will pay for fabric. Those involved now take fabric home so they can continue to make and donate more pillowcases, despite not having a central location to get together. “I look after the distribution of fabric and collection of the pillowcases,” said Una. “My friend Judy Weston does all the cutting after her husband Barry has washed all the fabric.” Una said that the group of 9-10 helpers would benefit from some more volunteers. “Judy and Barry would like some help with the washing and cutting of fabric, while I need people to sew and to iron. I pack and despatch them. “The benefit of doing something for others, with others, cannot be underestimated. The thrill I get from working with Pillowcases4Oncologykids is the connection between what we do and the end result,” said Una. “Each time one of our sewers completes a pillowcase, we know that a hospital stay for a child is made just a tiny bit happier with a pillowcase that is unique and their own. It is such a small thing we do that can provide mountains of support for children with cancer and their families.” If you’d like to be involved or donate, Una can be contacted by calling 3879 3638 or by sending an email to unagray@gmail.com.

Forest Lake family celebrate combined 125 years of marriage One family, three couples celebrate milestone anniversaries this year, with locals Belinda and Michael marking 25 years of wedded bliss and both their parents celebrating 50 years of marriage. All the couples are long term Forest Lake residents. The three couples kindly took time to answer some questions for The Lake News.
Marion and Graeme, married 50 years: How/when did you meet? We first met at a Rock-n-Roll party at my home in Brunswick Heads, NSW, which we held almost every week. I was 17 and Graeme was 18. Graeme asked me on my first date to the Lismore Show after which we began courting. How long have you lived in Forest Lake? We have been very happy living in Forest Lake for eight years this May. What are the secrets to a long marriage? I don’t know if there are any secrets to a long marriage but you must work at your marriage by always taking the time out to listen and care for each other. At the end of our work day we always had a cuppa and talked about our day and always resolved our differences before the day ended. That always worked for us. Most of all - keep smiling.
Shirley and Bernie, married 50 years: How/when did you meet? Myself and a few friends went out for a few drinks in 1963 and finished up at the National Hotel in Queen St at the Cabaret. I noticed an attractive blonde sitting at a table with a few friends across the room. I said to my mates, “See the blonde over there? She’s mine!” That’s how we met. How long have you lived in Forest Lake? We have lived in the Forest Lake area for 24 years. What are the secrets to a long marriage? Doing interesting things together through our life and accepting our individualism. Lots of communication is very important.
Belinda and Michael, married 25 years: How/when did you meet? We met at a social night at a local ballroom dance studio, when we were about 16 years old. How long have you lived in Forest Lake? We have lived in Forest Lake for 18 years. What are the secrets to a long marriage? We are committed to our children. We also hold the same values and goals. It’s important to allow each other to have our own interests. Congratulations to all three couples! We hope you enjoy celebrating these significant achievements with family and friends. Parkinson Ward Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor is providing more outdoor facilities for residents to enjoy in Parkinson Ward, with more than $140,000 worth of park upgrades in Heathwood Park due to commence construction in the week beginning 9 February weather permitting. “The new play equipment is funded through the Parkinson Ward Parks and Footpath Trust Fund and improvements will include a new Kings Castle Playgym with rubber softfall, as well as shade sails over the play area between the carpark and the pyramid climber,â€? said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. The existing pathway will be reconfigured to join up to the new play equipment to ensure access for children of all abilities and a new multi person see-saw will replace the old equipment under the shade of the nearby trees. “As Heathwood is a growing suburb with many young families these additional facilities will provide opportunities for children to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle. “It is anticipated the construction of the new fitness equipment will be completed early March. “This park has become a focal point for local residents to come together to get to know their neighbours. “I am always conscious of reviewing of our local parks to ensure improvements keep up with the demands of the growing community, and boast new features to support the growth,â€? Cr Angela Owen-Taylor said. Cr Angela Owen-Taylor said Brisbane City Council was investing $44.5 million into new and upgraded parks this financial year to provide residents and visitors with attractive parks and recreational facilities. In addition, each of Brisbane’s 26 councillors has access to $398,000 from the Ward Parks and Footpath Trust for new footpaths and park improvements.

As a learning community, St John’s teachers focus on using “next” practice to provide opportunities for students at all year levels to achieve the best educational outcomes. As an independent school St John’s has the capacity to take a balanced view about what’s important for our young people to know and be able to do in the future and to encourage them in their learning and development in both academic and extracurricular pursuits. As “custodians of opportunity” our teachers challenge young minds to develop confidence in using their natural creativity and being innovative in their thinking. As we prepare young people for their future in the rapidly changing digital world, we are aware that they will need to reinvent themselves over and over as they move through careers and into new ones. Confidence and personal resilience will be essential attributes of the St John’s graduate. Students at St John’s are developing inquiring minds through our recent successful application to be a candidate school within the world-renowned International Baccalaureate program. In addition to our strong focus on literacy and numeracy, this year students are using their natural inquisitiveness to think for themselves and solve problems in creative ways. Complementing our focus on teaching inquiry methods to children of all year levels is our commitment to providing many and varied opportunities through our extracurricular programs in sport, performing arts and service programs. A balanced educational program is the key to success for your child so please take the opportunity to visit us on our first Open Day for 2015 or alternatively contact our Registrar to arrange a personal tour email: jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au Kind regards Suzanne Bain Head, St John’s Anglican College Kindy to Year 6 07 3372 0888 Years 7 to 12 07 3372 0111 www.stjohnsanglicancollege.com.au enquiries@sjac.qld.edu.au

Enjoy a relaxed night out with Music at the Hub Music at the Hub is a quality, casual, relaxed ‘night out’ to enjoy talented musicians and performers from Brisbane and any touring acts that can be enticed to come to the Centenary suburbs. The genre includes styles of Folk, Blues, Jazz, easy listening and soft Rock depending on the artists. This month on Saturday 21 February, the performers will be Tim Gaze and Blue Café. Residents are encouraged to book early as this is sure to be another terrific evening. Tim Gaze has enjoyed a long career as one of Australia’s pre-eminent guitar player/vocalists. Through the years Tim has been an influential member of several highly regarded Australian bands – Tamam Shud, Kahvas Jute, Ariel, Rose Tattoo, The Aussie Rebels and The Hoochie Coochie Men – as well as several bands featuring his own name. Today Tim is a quiet, unassuming man who downplays his talent but is also quick to point out that his career is “still a work in progress” with traditional and modern blues, rock, roots, surf, acoustic electric slide guitar, vocals all featuring. Blue Café is a means for the “not so young” to continue their love of music. The band focuses mainly on swing, jazz, Latin and a little blues. The band consists of Julie Lee Rae as vocalist (apart from Blue Café, Julie, a talented performer, also has her own “one person” show based around Country Rock); Neville Monks on bass (Neville has played for many jazz line-ups over the years and continues to have a high level of enthusiasm and skill); Robert Walsh, drums (Robert has had a part-time career as a drummer in Rock’n’Roll - he wanted to turn his hand to more diverse styles and has done that very well); Harry Strybos, guitar (Harry has played in quite a number of rock bands over the years and is basically a rhythm player gone wrong). Music at the Hub takes place at Centenary Community Hub, 171 Dandenong Rd Mt Ommaney, and doors open at 6.00pm with ample parking on site, before performances begin at 7pm. The cost is $10 entry per person (under 14 years old free entry) and is cash only, cost includes entry to lucky door prize. Light meals, nibble platters, snacks, soft drinks, water, tea and coffee will be available at very reasonable prices. BYO alcoholic drinks only, don’t forget your glasses; audience members are asked to not bring snacks or food, as the sale of food and soft drinks helps to keep the entry price low. Bookings are essential and can be made by sending an email to bookings@ccconnect.asn. au or by phoning 0499 999 772 to secure your table, if unanswered please leave a message.
Don’t ditch it, re-gift it! Did this year’s Christmas presents miss the mark? Not impressed with the joke hand towel, the ‘his and hers’ bath robes, rainbow socks, keep calm t-shirt, fluffy slippers, wallet chain, crazy pattern leggings or animal suit? “Don’t ditch your unwanted Christmas presents, donate them to a Red Cross Shop,” says Red Cross Shops General Manager, Kate Dear. “It’s been found Australians spend over $1 billion each year on Red Cros unwanted gifts,” said Kate. “Instead of throwing away your dud presents, s Shop why not re-gift them? All our shops are desperate for donations of unwanted clothing, bric-a-brac and gifts. “The proceeds from our shops help fund the everyday work of Red Cross such as making daily phone calls to elderly people who live alone, breakfast for schoolkids who might otherwise go to school hungry and clean drinking water for vulnerable families in the Asia-Pacific. “Donations can be delivered to any Red Cross store Monday to Friday, and in some busier locations, seven days a week. Unfortunately we can’t accept donations of electrical items, large furniture or mattresses and we ask people not to dump rubbish or leave large items outside our shops.” Red Cross Shops also welcome new volunteers, particularly over summer when many of the regular volunteers are on holiday. No experience is necessary and volunteers can opt to work as little as four hours a week, on weekdays or weekends. To enquire about becoming a volunteer, call 1800 811 700, email retail@redcross.org.au. The nearest Red Cross Shop to Forest Lake is located at 669 Sherwood Road, Sherwood - phone 3278 0344 for opening hours. “By the way,” says Kate. “If you’re looking to buy an unusual bath robe, rainbow socks, keep calm t-shirt, fluffy slippers, wallet chain, crazy pattern leggings or a cute alligator suit; check out your nearest Red Cross Shop!” The Lake News - February 2015 - Page 17

The heart is a four chambered muscular organ that functions to pump blood around the body. Heart failure occurs when the heart fails to pump enough blood to meet the body’s demands. This causes changes in the body as it tries to support a faltering system. These changes include increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and fluid retention. Heart disease can have many origins. It can be caused by changes in the heart’s muscular walls, defects of the valves separating the chambers of the heart or narrowing of the vessels leaving the heart. As with humans, heart abnormalities can exist at birth or can develop late in life and of course in pets, heartworm can be a contributing factor. When the heart is unable to function correctly, there is a build up of fluid pressure within the circulatory system. This can cause “leakage” of fluid into the chest or abdomen and is responsible for many of the clinical signs seen with heart disease. These signs include: • coughing and difficulty breathing • engorgement of veins (often can be seen in the jugular vein in the neck) • swollen abdomen (ascites - fluid in the abdominal cavity) • enlarged liver • weight loss • decreased exercise tolerance - the dog tires easily • pale or purple mucous membranes • cool extremities (toes, tips of ears etc) • fluid swelling of lower limbs If you suspect your pet is suffering heart disease, it is wise to have it examined by your veterinarian. Diagnosis of heart disease begins with a thorough physical examination. Listening to the patient’s chest with a stethoscope can allow the veterinarian to identify any abnormal heart sounds, rhythms or lung sounds. If an abnormality is suspected, the next step is to x-ray the chest. Chest x-rays show the size and shape of the heart silhouette, any blood vessel enlargement within the chest and any changes in the lungs. Some heart diseases can be diagnosed with the above, but there are other tests that can help further define the problems. Ultrasound of the heart is a technique that is very useful. It is used to see the size of the heart chambers, the degree of contraction of the heart and more advanced ultrasound machines can even show the direction of blood flow through the heart. An ECG is another way to investigate heart disease. This device records the electrical impulses across the heart as nerves fire to stimulate the heart to beat. ECG’s are useful to determine any changes in the heart’s rhythm and can give an indication of changes of heart chamber size. Other tests such as blood and urine tests can help determine changes caused by heart disease and are often recommended before therapy for heart disease is started. Many different therapies for heart disease are available depending on the type and severity of the disorder. Most pets with mild heart disease respond well to therapy and can have an extended lifespan with treatment. Unfortunately, many heart conditions are progressive; this is why diagnosis of heart disease can be very important to give a more accurate prognosis. Therapy for heart disease is lifelong and generally requires regular rechecks to assess the stage of heart disease and any changes occurring.

With the festive season and holidays now in our memory and the children returning for another school year, holidays are over and the traffic problems continue, I suppose one could say ‘life is returning to normal!’ But wait...life is not normal within the garden club. The meeting will now be held on the first Tuesday morning of the month commencing on Tuesday 3 February and then on Tuesday 3 March. The meetings will commence at 10am with morning tea available from 9.30am. The venue is the Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Road, Ellen Grove. Membership remains at $25 per calendar year, and some of the advantages are discounted bus trips and a 10% discount on all purchases from our sponsors, Crossacres Garden Nursery, 58 Crossacres R o a d , D o o l a n d e l l a w h e n y o u s h o w y o u r c l u b ’s membership badge. With the change from evening to day-time meetings, we have introduced an Associate Membership and details are available upon request. Visitors pay $5 per meeting and this includes morning tea, The Good Dirt newsletter, a lucky door ticket and any of the free plants on offer. Did you plant an Australian native tree or plant on Australia Day? One of the most popular trees in most gardens is the gorgeous Grevillea. Like the Bottlebrush, Grevilleas are loved by our native birds and what better than to sit back and watch the native birds enjoying these trees even though the lorikeets may get noisy from time to time. Some of the popular grevilleas are the Silvereye Cream, Pink Midget, Fire Sprite and my favourite Peaches and Cream. I’m as guilty as anyone for buying ‘eye-catching’ plants and we plant the drought tolerant plants and water loving plants together...one of them will not survive! For further information check the February’s edition of The Good Dirt. Presenting a bunch of cut roses is the traditional way of celebrating Valentine’s Day, but a potted rose plant that will live for many years is a far more appropriate way to acknowledge a long-lasting commitment. Red roses are always the number one choice for Valentine’s Day. Other roses available with Valentine-friendly names are Angel Face, Best Friend, My Hero, Seduction or Sentimental. I’m sure you will find the appropriate rose for your friend. Guest speakers throughout the year are diverse and interesting ones covering many aspects of gardening. This year many of the guest speakers will be with us for their first time. The February guest speaker will be the popular Noel Burdette and Dan from Rocky Point Mulching & Fertilizers in March. Why not come along and join us for morning tea, friendship and a casual chat with other local gardeners?

STATE MEMBER FOR ALGESTER TER R
As we head into the new school year for 2015, I am happy to report on some important safety upgrades provided by the State Government in the Algester electorate. It was with excitement that the Pallara State School community received their promised flashing lights in late 2014, joining Grand Avenue State School, Algester State School and Boronia State School in the safety provisions promised by the Government and all of which are now delivered! The safety of our children walking to and from school is paramount as the State Government continues its commitment to the safety of all Queenslanders on our roads – especially our little ones. Reflecting upon safety throughout Queensland I feel confident that 2015 will not only be a brighter year for our children (as our local schools have received over $700,000 collaboratively in maintenance backlog funding, hundreds of extra teacher aide hours across all schools in the electorate, safety upgrades and new schools being built – including a brand new school in Pallara) but also for our families. This is due to many necessary measures and initiatives being taken by the State Government including the well-known ‘Safe Night Out’ legislation, tougher Grooming Laws aimed at preventing incidences before they happen, stronger Animal Cruelty Laws and legislation being passed, stronger powers given to police to fight organised crime and the atrocities that come with it, and tougher Juvenile Penalties with the aim of intervening and preventing the cycle of crime. In this summer season nothing seems to reel home to me as much as the rights all Queenslanders deserve to a safe, happy holiday season with their loved ones and families and I’m happy to hear personal reports coming through from everyday families of how much safer they feel and how it is helping them enjoy their well-deserved time off with their family in a relaxed and safe environment. I remember as a kid playing cricket with my friends on the front lawn without a worry or care, enjoying the long summer holidays, sometimes on Bribie, with a complete feeling of safety and security. This is my wish for my children and grandchildren and it warms my heart that I can slowly see the shoots coming through for a brighter and more secure future for our kids thanks to these strong choices made and implemented by our State Government. Something else dear to my heart is the up and coming Commemoration of the Centenary of ANZAC. I know that the planning is well advanced by both the Forest Lake and Greenbank RSL sub-branches for their commemorative services. I have enjoyed working closely with both sub-branches in supporting their services and the members have been, and are, working tirelessly in collaborating these events which are shaping up to be events I believe will be very memorable and an enriching experience for all involved as well as the wider community. Here’s hoping the return to the 2015 work and school year has been and is a smooth transition and please, stay safe, stay hydrated and stay sun safe in the Queensland summer weather!

News from the 19th Hole
Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling
Well, here it is 2015 already and the clubs first game of the year was held at Wolston Park Golf Club on 18 January. Despite the oppressive heat, 38 eager golfers assembled at the first tee with hope and expectation of shooting the elusive great round, and from some of the results, it was obvious we had some very happy golfers when we all got back into the 19th hole! The results from this game were: A Grade Winner Pat Ayling & Runner-up Dan McKay; B Grade Winner Don Pickwick and Runner-up Ben Lalor; C Grade Winner Glenn Mostyn & Runner-up Michael Eveleigh. Our Long Drive exponents were Don Pickwick in B Grade and Jason Rowe in C Grade. Nearest Second Shot went to Dan McKay, while Nearest the Pin sharp shooters were Pat Ayling and Ben Lalor. Congratulations to all prizewinners on the day. The Clubs Annual General Meeting was held after the game, where a new Management Committee was elected to guide the Club through 2015. A vote of thanks went to the former President and Committee for doing a wonderful job in 2014. Our Club Sheriff collected ‘fines’ from our members at each of the games during 2104, raising a total of $660.00 that will again be donated to the clubs chosen charity – The Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital Perinatal Research Centre. The clubs next game will be held at Mount Warren Park Golf Club on the 8th February with a 6.30 am tee time. Golf carts and lunch will be provided by Mount Warren as part of the game fees. For anyone who is interested in joining our club, please contact Cory (Secretary) on 0407 339 794 or like ‘Forest Lake Social Golf Club’ on our Facebook Page and register your interest there. The Heritage Community Bank Branch at Forest Lake and the Jindalee Golf Club are proud sponsors the Forest Lake Social Golf Club.

First book is a dream come true For many, working full time and living one’s dreams don’t often go together but for local author, Peter Ship, writing as a hobby at night and on weekends has produced a published novel. The idea for an action adventure novel struck Ship while on holiday in London, steeped in its rich history and the close proximity to the royal family. The first in a trilogy, McNiven: The Kingdom Guardian, follows the life of McNiven a royal security chief who risks his life to save his mistress while averting an impending war. Set in 2037, McNiven provides personal security for the reigning Monarch of the United Kingdom, a position his family have fulfilled for 500 years. Following a devastating terrorist attack on London that leaves almost 400,000 people dead, Queen Penelope secretly unleashes McNiven to track down the terrorists and destroy their plans for additional attacks. The Queen becomes a target for the terrorists and is betrayed by members of her family and staff. There is non-stop action stretching from Hastings in the south to the highlands of Scotland and across the channel into Europe. Unexpected twists and events are bound together by the twin threads of romance and loyalty as McNiven hunts those responsible for the destruction and deaths that were a smokescreen for an even more sinister plot to make London the capital of Western Europe. McNiven races against time to unmask the terrorists and saves the lives of the Queen and the G8 leaders. The second book in the McNiven series, called One Hope is already well underway, with the third book still in the research stage. Ship was determined to head into impending retirement with a plan and a purpose, so began writing the novel while on holidays. “I succeeded in writing around 10,000 words with my two finger typing. After that I wrote 1000-1500 words at night instead of watching television and then for a couple of hours on weekends,” he said. “If I had a busy day at work then sometimes I wouldn’t write. The secret for me is to not place pressure on myself by committing to a fixed finishing date. It has to be a pleasure like any hobby and then I can be creative. All up it took about eighteen months.” To purchase McNiven: The Kingdom Guardian, simply go to Amazon or buy direct from the website mcniventhekingdomguardian.com. Peter Ship can be contacted by sending an email to guidinglight@y7mail.com.
From the desk of Angela Owen-Taylor Parkinson Ward Councillor After a hot January with many residents heading to the beach and on holidays, we have seen the return to school of many local students and welcomed new students starting school. I encourage all drivers to take extra care around local schools and to make sure you abide by school zone speed limits and do not illegally park which places children’s safety in jeopardy. Council officers undertake patrols around schools and infringements will be issued if you do not comply with parking conditions as per signage or yellow no stopping lines. Congratulations to the new school leaders, who have just taken up their roles in each of our local schools. I am sure you will serve your school and fellow students well. These young people, as role models, often take part in community events in their own time and your commitment to service is commended. As we are still not completely out of the summer storm season, I remind all residents you are still able to sign up to the Early Warning Emergency Alert notification. Forest Lake has one of the areas with the highest number of residents taking positive action to be prepared and I encourage those who have already signed up to let your friends, family and neighbours know. We can all follow the Scout’s motto of ‘Be Prepared’. To sign up online go to www.brisbane.qld.gov. au/community-support/emergency-management/brisbane-early-warning-service/index.htm We have now seen another successful season draw to a close for Forest Lake Little Athletics (Falcons) and I am proud of the growth of this new sporting club in our local community. Only a few years ago I attended the first meeting to get this club off the ground and I am pleased that today it is thriving and providing great benefits for our youth. March will see the return of Rugby Union to the Sportsfields. As Club Patron I encourage young people interested in playing Rugby Union to come and join the Forest Lake Wasps. It is great to see many young people engaged in an active and healthy lifestyle in our city and local community. Forest Lake is a great community, I look forward to continuing to work together with many local groups and for you, to make it even better. Page 24 - February 2015 - The Lake News

3UREXV &OXE 8SGDWH E\ 0DUJH %UHLWHQEDFK To state the obvious, Christmas has come and gone and Probus was delighted that Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor and Anthony Shorten, Member of Parliament for Algester, attended our Christmas function for the first time. Our first meeting of the year had no speaker so Barry and Judith stepped in with a quiz session. The New Year was certainly heralded in with blazing summer days and afternoon showers. The gardeners amongst the Probians have been very busy rejuvenating and replanting plants that have been destroyed by storms and excessive heat. The Probus Club also needs new members to instil more rejuvenation and extra energy. A form of contemporary existentialism is that man is, to some extent, determined by the character of the world yet is also free in so far as a being can constitute its own world and that world comprises of health, happiness, growing old gracefully and the ability and motivation to enjoy life. This is what the Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc is all about. We are inviting all persons who are retired or semiretired from their previous occupations and are interested in advancing their intellectual and cultural interests with hilarity and enjoyment to contact the Probus Club. We enjoy a morning tea and then it is time for our monthly speaker. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 10am at the Forest Lake Hotel. The third Tuesday of a month we enjoy and participate in an activity. This could range from a day trip, picnic lunch or visit to an interesting facility. Forest Lakers come and give us a test drive and see for yourselves how friendly, caring and fun-loving we are! Membership Officer Kevin is waiting for your call. He can be contacted on 0408 933 561 or secretary Chris 0404 452 052 or President Joan 3372 9923. Some exciting things have been planned for the year. Come and join us.

Family Focus with Mark Mackay
Mark Mackay is one of the Baptist pastors in Forest Lake
For many people, February means Valentine’s Day. Personally, I’ve never really bought into the whole Valentine’s Day thing. It has never really made sense to me that on a day named after a martyred saint (St Valentine), we honour that by giving gifts of romance. Then again, to be fair, I’ve never been the most romantic person. I suspect I’m not atypical of most Australian men. In general, we don’t do romance well. However, romance is important. One of the great dangers in families is that, as the years go on, and kids come along, and life gets busy and financial pressures creep in, we just forget the priority of romance. Perhaps early on in the relationship, we used to buy little gifts, go for walks together, go out on dates, etc, and it’s not as though we’ve stopped loving the other person - we’ve just stopped making romance a priority. Now before we go any further, let me make one thing clear. When I say “romance,â€? I’m not just talking about sex. Yes, sex is a part of it. But, romance is about taking time to value the whole person - the mind, soul, body and emotions. Once upon a time, I would have read that statement and thought, “What a load of greeting card nonsense.â€? But, I’ve come to learn that romance is important in any healthy relationship. One of the worst false caricatures of Christianity is that God is not interested in romance and sex. But, that misses the point that it is God who has imbued us with that desire for romance. It was God who performed the first marriage and caused Adam to sing a love song to his wife, Eve. It was God who gave us the incredibly romantic book of Song of Solomon. But the importance of romance in the family goes beyond just the couple. If you have kids, the way you show romance around the home will give your kids a picture of what they will understand as healthy. Of course, discretion and wisdom needs to be used in terms of what our kids see. If I grab my wife forcefully and treat her poorly, I would be giving them an unhealthy example that will impact on their expectations of a relationship. But, when I kiss my wife in front of my kids, I am showing them a healthy affection and respect. Even if my kids wince and say, “grossâ€? when I kiss my wife, I want to show them a healthy, romantic, affectionate, loving relationship that will speak into their lives and expectations. Don’t let the tyranny of the urgent stop you from showing affection. And don’t just show affection on Valentine’s Day. But, perhaps the affection levels in your relationship have been dropping. If that’s the case, use this Valentine’s Day as a prompt. Here are some practical tips: • take a walk somewhere quiet, without any smartphones; • go on a date night; • buy a little, thoughtful, unsolicited gift; • write a card. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to show affection but the impact can be powerful for the health and vibrancy of your relationship and family. God bless you as you show affection in your home.
