Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis One of my earliest memories of moving to Queensland from Tasmania when I was 14 was the storms. Tasmania just doesn’t get the same sort of storms that Queensland does, well, not in my memory anyway. Unaccustomed to the heavy stickiness of the air, even from early in the morning, I soon grew to expect, and dread, the inevitable afternoon storm. I did get used to it though and would happily dance around in the rain after all the thunder and lightning had passed over, enjoying the brief respite from the heat and humidity before it quickly built up again. We’ve already had our fair share of storms this storm season and are probably in for more before it’s through. Since the major flooding event of January 2011, I must confess to feeling more wary of storms than I used to be. I think, too, the warnings are more frequent and urgent sounding, due to people being caught off guard previously. When you live in an area where storms are likely, it seems to me that people go one of two ways: they are used to it and not particularly fazed by them; or their fear increases and they will go to great lengths not to be out in them and have pantries full of UHT milk and non perishables. It’s an interesting parallel with how we cope with the storms of life. Some of us, after experiencing setbacks will pick ourselves up and forge forward, others will retreat and avoid all risk-taking they can. And, as always, balance is the key. Just as it is dangerous to purposely drive into a storm and try to cross flooded roads, it’s a dangerous way to live if we draw no lessons from life’s setbacks and ‘storms’ and learn to temper our responses. It’s true, too, that cowering inside during a storm and not even entertaining the idea of venturing out 48 hours either side of a storm, is not rational, just as living in fear of what disaster may befall us, and refusing to take risks in life is no way to live. In life, we will face storms of all sorts. Some may loom over us, bearing down, dark and foreboding from the horizon and turn into just a few drops of rain and a couple of rumbles of thunder. Other times, we can be pummelled by hail unexpectedly. And yet other times, we can clearly see what’s coming, hear the weatherman’s warning and be fully prepared. The trick, I think, with life’s storms, is to be as prepared as we can be, yet not fearful. Significant storms, like the loss of a loved one, taken either suddenly or through disease and suffering can be prepared for by how we live our life and how well we maintain our relationships. Keeping short accounts, telling people how we really feel - both positive and negative, living in the moment and appreciating each individual’s unique gifts that they bring to our lives help us be prepared. How are you going to approach the storms of life as we venture forth into a new year?

“I hate my CPAP.” I have been hearing that phrase a lot lately. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. Basically it is a pump that blows oxygen into your body while you sleep. It is the treatment of choice for anyone with severe or moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Anyone who has worn a CPAP, knows what it is like. The big advantage of wearing CPAP is twofold – firstly it keeps you alive while you sleep and secondly helps you to have a good sleep rather than being woken up by your brain because you aren’t breathing. There are different levels of OSA (or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea). Severe, moderate, mild and none. The levels are different for adults and children. Children should not have OSA at all so anytime you hear your child stop breathing you should get them straight to a sleep specialist for evaluation. Adults are different for many reasons so the levels are higher. There are different types of Sleep Apnoea as well. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is where there is a blockage of the airway due to soft tissues like the tongue or tonsils/adenoids. Central Sleep Apnoea is where the brain basically forgets to tell the body to breathe. There is no blockage in the airway. Mixed Sleep Apnoea is where both Central and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea occur. CPAP has been around for some time now and it is used in congestive heart failure or chronic pulmonary disease as well as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Many people don’t like the machine but understand how important it is to use it. Many other people just stop using it because it continues to affect their sleep and they would rather sleep better. There is an oral appliance that may help if you can’t or don’t want to wear your CPAP machine. It is called a Mandibular Advancement Splint or MAS. An Australian company called Somnomed makes the most widely accepted appliance. This consists of an upper part and a lower part that work to hold your lower jaw in a position that keeps the airway open. It is not instead of a CPAP machine but it will help keep you alive and improve the OSA if you don’t wear your CPAP. Many sleep specialists recommend the oral appliance for anyone who has mild OSA as it is much more comfortable and portable than a CPAP machine. There are many different styles of MAS and you really need someone with lots of experience to ensure you are prescribed the best appliance for your situation. Some research into CPAP machines state that up to 70% of people who are prescribed a CPAP machine do not continue wearing it after 12 months. When used, the CPAP machine is 100% effective in treating OSA, Central Apnoea and Mixed Apnoea. If you are not wearing your CPAP then it may be a good idea to look into MAS to help your Sleep Apnoea. It won’t help against Central Sleep Apnoea but it will definitely help with OSA.

Last year, Cr Angela Owen-Taylor attended the Forest Lake National Seniors Christmas lunch to make a special presentation. “In recognition of the efforts of the Forest Lake National Seniors supporting the drive to provide items of need for farmers doing it tough out west, it gives me great pleasure to present my Spirit of Brisbane Award to this group,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. “It is wonderful to know we have so many people generous in spirit living in our local community who are willing to support others in their time of need. “This award was presented to Dan Baldwin as President of Forest Lake National Seniors and presented at the annual Christmas lunch so all involved could share in the acknowledgement of their efforts. “This is a small way of saying thank you to our local residents who care enough about others to make a difference.”

Forest Lake angels spread festive cheer Forest Lake Shopping Centre embraced the true spirit of Christmas in its 12 Days of Giving Campaign last month. The campaign started on Saturday 13th December, when customers were approached by roving Centre Angels and greeted with, “Merry Christmas, this gift is for you.” The Angels gave a variety of gifts away each day up until Christmas Eve. In line with the 12 days of Christmas, there was 12 gifts on day one, 11 on day two, 10 on day three and so on, until 24th December, when the centre drew the $10,000 cash giveaway competition. “We value our customers and wanted to find a way to thank them for shopping with us throughout the y e a r, ” s a i d m a r k e t i n g manager, Linda Loosley. “We also wanted to spread a little Christmas happiness and decided that giving Christmas presents to our customers would do just that. We hope that receiving one of our gifts was a lovely experience for our customers.” Centre Angels gave
away gifts such as Xboxes, iPads, Thomas Sabo necklaces, toys, centre gift vouchers and fragrances, sponsored by centre retailers including Malouf Pharmacies, Pascoe Jewellers and Target. Those customers who didn’t receive a gift had the opportunity to participate in the centre’s $10,000 cash prize giveaway, which was drawn on 24th December when one lucky family won the cash prize, just in time to celebrate for Christmas. Editor’s note: Unfortunately, this edition went to print before December 24. An article with news of the lucky winner will appear in the February edition.

Local resident, Peter Streety, recently competed in the Australian Masters Games in Alice Springs where over 3800 competitors participated in the games. Peter competed in squash events and won a silver medal in the individual and a bronze medal in the doubles with a partner from Adelaide. Peter plays in the Queensland Masters Squash tournaments throughout the eastern seaboard twice a month and hopes to play in the Australian Masters Squash tournament held in Perth this year as well as the Australian Masters Games tournament held in Nelson NZ. Playing at Ipswich PCYC on Monday nights and Brassall squash on Wednesday nights each week, Peter loves the sense of achievement in the competition the sport gives along with the relaxation and wonderful friendships formed over the many years of playing.
Volunteer wildlife drivers needed Volunteer drivers are urgently needed to transport wildlife patients. Based at the Wacol Animal Care Campus, the job would suit any applicants who are passionate about animal welfare, have a commitment to learn and are particularly interested in wildlife rehabilitation. This role of transport driver involves a lot of travel around Brisbane and the surrounding areas in an RSPCA vehicle. Duties include collecting, transporting, reuniting and releasing wildlife. You will be required to be outdoors for extended periods of time. The role is available Monday to Sunday, 8am - noon or noon - 4pm. A minimum commitment of four hours per week for a minimum of three months is required. Full orientation and training is provided, however for legal reasons, all applicants must be over 25 years old. Applicants require a clean open manual drivers licence, a willingness to learn and wildlife knowledge or training would obviously be an advantage. For further information, please contact the Brisbane Volunteer Coordinator on 3426 9915 or volunteering@rspcaqld.org.au.

Welcome to 2015. Who made New Year’s Resolutions for 2015? Let’s hope it was to get out there and enjoy life more and get to know other wonderful people in this very special community of ours. There is no meeting in January as we all take a bit of a break to recharge our batteries for another year of fun, friendship and fabulous trips and activities. Come along next month on Wednesday 11 February. Meeting Place - Lions Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands. (Second Wednesday of the month) 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. We will be clearing out the cobwebs with games of trivia. Get organised and get a team together. Teams of two, four or six people works well. There are small prizes to be won. Why not join us for lunch at Lions after the meeting. To our members who are unwell, best wishes for a return to good health. During the first week of December many of our members enjoyed the Lord Mayor’s Seniors Christmas Party and Concert at the City Hall Auditorium. The MCs were hilarious and the entertainers were fabulous. We look forward each year to attending these concerts and are very grateful for the tickets from our local Councillors. December’s Christmas lunch and meeting was held at our local Richlands Tavern. Morning tea of shortbread and chocolates was a good start and everyone was in fine festive spirit. Fabulous raffle prizes were won by lucky folk to be enjoyed during the Festive Season. The special treat was a great performance by Lachlan; a young man with a fantastic voice. We loved it, especially the Christmas numbers. The 2015 calendar produced by our very talented Committee member Terry was a nice Christmas gift to members as well as beautifully wrapped tins of shortbread to enjoy over the holidays. President Dan Baldwin thanked his Committee, Meeting Volunteers and Members for making 2014 such a wonderful year for all of us. It was with great pleasure that Dan accepted the 2014 Spirit of Brisbane award on behalf of Forest Lake National Seniors, which was presented at the Christmas lunch by Cr Angela Owen Taylor. A group of members took a trip to Norfolk Island for a few days in November. Plenty of sightseeing and really enjoyable tours. The weather was so mild and a welcome break from the high temperatures of Brisbane. There was time for a spot of Christmas shopping or a little self indulgence. Meeting the locals and learning so much of the history was a highlight for the tour group. It was lots of fun with a great itinerary all planned and booked through National Seniors Travel. What a wonderful way to get to know your fellow members better. More exciting away trips and day trips are on the Calendar for 2015. For further information about our Branch please contact either Julie 3278 7274 or Val 3372 4405.

3UREXV &OXE 8SGDWH E\ 0DUJH %UHLWHQEDFK The year has just galloped past with lightning speed. And what a year it has been with so much focus on our river city with Brisbane playing host to the G20. Probians also enjoyed a busy latter half year and again showed the very caring attitude so typical of our members. When help and support is needed we rally. Some Probians assisted Rotary with another Citizenship Ceremony and this time it was held at Calamvale. Five hundred individuals were officially welcomed to become new Australians and plead allegiance to this wonderful country of ours. Despite a blistering hot day with no air-conditioning in the hall as well as a shortage of fans, those Probians who helped were proud to be assisting in another community service. A very special thanks has to go to President Joan, Kevin, Chris, Jim and Marge. At the Heritage function, Joan and Chris represented the Club. The Lord Mayor’s Concert was another popular event and well attended. What a delightful Christmas function was organised by Judith and Barry at Mt Ommaney Lodge. Most members attended and the food was excellent. Judith made beautiful red napkins as presents for each member which displayed a single initial. Amongst all her other activities, she still found time to embroider each one. Inside the napkins were packets of traditional short bread biscuits. Entertainment, most enjoyable, was provided by Mike Kregor. Trish and Marge were the Amazon Security Team who allocated table seating to members. They later played the role of elves assisting the suave, dynamic Santa, who was the ‘youthful’ Kevin. Probus has its next meeting on January 13, which is the second Tuesday of the month; our normal meeting date. We get together at 10 a.m. at the Forest Lake Hotel. By that time all would have drawn up their New Year Resolutions...remember these should be achievable and not be the cause of stress! To all retirees and semi-retirees come and visit us and see how down to earth we are. We are all very young at heart and love meeting people. Come for a test drive! Opportunities to hone your art skills in the new year The Inala Community Art Gallery and Cultural Centre will be conducting a series of art classes during late January, February and March. The classes are open to adults and children seeking, as beginners, to learn how to draw and paint or enhance their existing skills. The classes will take the form of Multimedia Workshops over 10 weeks, scheduled to commence on Tuesday, January 27. Every class costs $10 for each session with materials supplied. The Management of the Inala Plaza Shopping Complex have partnered with The Inala Art Gallery, by funding the cost of materials for the workshops. “We are very grateful that they have chosen to be involved with us to assist in making these workshops available at minimal cost to the participants. We look forward to a rewarding and positive relationship,” said Rowena Solomon, the Inala Community Art Gallery and Cultural Centre Secretary. An experienced and well qualified university graduate, Ms Parvin Azima, who is skilled in all the media disciplines on offer, will take each class and provide participants with a taste of new media such as ‘ink painting’. The Inala Art Gallery has been operating as a not for profit organisation run by a dedicated group of volunteers for just over 20 years. It has been widely recognised for the diversity of programs and exhibitions, as well as for providing valuable art education (basic and advanced), encouraging participants, young and old to learn and practise skills they never thought they had, as well as giving them an opportunity to display their talents in a well known local facility. The Inala Community Art Gallery and Cultural centre is located in the lower Civic Centre shopping precinct just next to the Brisbane City Council Library on the Corsair Avenue, Inala frontage. For more information or registration for the Multimedia Workshops 2015, other art classes or exhibition details to view or show, call the Gallery on 3372 8208 on Wednesday and Thursday or visit on those days in person.

irstly, I would like to extend to all residents my best wishes for the new year - 2015. I would also like to remind motorists that during the school holidays please take extra care on our roads, particularly when in close proximity to parks. To all of the school students who have accepted school leadership positions for the new school year I extend my congratulations to you and I look forward to working with you in your official roles. Congratulations to all the families who celebrated the arrival of babies into their families in 2014 and it was a pleasure to formally welcome these children into our local community at my annual Baby’s First Christmas event on 6 December. If you are expecting a child in 2015 or had a new arrival since 6 December please let my office know and we will organise for your child to be pre-registered for the 2015 event. For many families, keeping young ones occupied during school holidays can be a challenge and from a Council perspective, it is a great time to see many children enjoying our local parks. There are many Council initiatives in relation to school holiday activities and these can be accessed at www. brisbane.qld.gov.au/whats-on/featured/school-holiday-activities-for-kids or for the many children who are avid readers in our Gold Star reading program you can also take part in our summer reading program with more information available at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/facilities-recreation/libraries/whats-library/summer-readingbrisbane-libraries/good-summer-reads-children. Residents will notice in upcoming weeks that fencing will be erected at the Amphitheatre at the Lake to commence a refurbishment program which will include irrigating and re-turfing the Amphitheatre site. It is expected the Amphitheatre will remain closed and declared a construction zone with no public access until its official re-opening in time for Anzac Day 2015. Once re-opened it will be declared a booking venue for special events such as weddings or community events and will not be able to be used for exercise activities and personal training. In recent times people have been utilising training equipment such as large tyres and this has unfortunately caused a lot of damage to the site which we are now endeavouring to rectify. As a reminder, my office will re-open on 12 January 2015 so my hardworking staff can enjoy some time with their families and any residents requiring assistance can contact the Call Centre on 3403 8888.

Vomiting and diarrhoea can occur separately or together as part of the same syndrome. Young pets, especially dogs, are very prone to gastrointestinal upset due to their age and the variety of things they chew on. There are many causes of these symptoms, some of which are obvious, others that are not obvious and require testing to diagnose. The list of causes is long with viruses, bacteria, protozoa, worms, poisons, foreign bodies being common primary causes and pancreatitis, liver and kidney disease being common secondary causes. The following advice can be given but if your pet is very sick, getting worse or has a history of a particular issue, early intervention is by far the best response Vomiting If your pet seems otherwise bright and happy, you could withhold food and water for at least two hours. You can then offer small amounts of water every one to two hours for six hours. If there has been no further vomiting, the water can be given ad lib and a small amount of bland food (such as boiled chicken and rice) given. Feed small, frequent, bland meals for two to three days before slowly reinstating regular diet and feeding schedules. If your pet appears quiet, has profuse vomiting, there is blood in the vomit or it continues to vomit despite not having food or water, please seek immediate veterinary attention. Diarrhoea Do not offer food for 12-24 hours (only two to six hours in pups under six months old or miniature breeds as these small pets can become dehydrated and hypoglycaemic quickly). Provide plenty of fresh water. Feed small, frequent meals of a bland diet (homemade or prescription) when re-instituting food - continue for three to four days, or until passing normal stool, with a gradual transition back to the regular brand of food. If your pet appears quiet, continues to have diarrhoea despite not having food or water or there is blood in the diarrhoea, please seek immediate veterinary attention. Collecting a faecal sample for analysis by your veterinarian can be beneficial. Vomiting and Diarrhoea Pets with both vomiting and diarrhoea are best assessed by a veterinarian as soon as possible as they can become dehydrated very quickly.

STATE MEMBER FOR ALGESTER TER R
Welcome to 2015! I hope all residents had a wonderful and safe Christmas, with family and friends. It was such a pleasure for me to attend so many Christmas lunches or dinners to thank the hard working community groups that contribute to and make the Forest Lake community the supportive and caring community it is. I had the great honour of turning the sod for the new school being built in Pallara. I was joined by the Pallara school student leadership team, representatives of the school’s P&C and the coordinator of the Heathwood Neighbourhood Watch. This school is one of 10 new schools being built across the state to cater for future growth. This significant investment in educational facilities is a clear tick of confidence in our area, and delivers on the Government’s commitment to deliver better planning and infrastructure. We all know the Salvation Army does a sterling job right across our community, and I am happy to advise residents that $117,000 has been approved to them to deliver youth renewal services in Forest Lake and surrounding areas. 2015 is shaping up as a very exciting year for the Forest Lake community. The building of the new school in Pallara, continued investment in our schools, the Centenary of Anzac which I am working with the Forest Lake RSL on and much more. I will continue to work hard for the community, as I have over the past three years. We have achieved much together but there is more to do. The job isn’t finished, I hope you will roll up your sleeves and join me in building a strong and supportive community.

Hello Readers As you have been enjoying the January holiday break, I am sure that like most people throughout the world, you have remained “connected”. Digital technology certainly offers us an array of personalized services, day and night, at our fingertips on many and varied devices. It’s certainly going to be a very different world for young people beyond graduation from formal schooling. Already they have the capacity to access 90% of all human knowledge on their personal device; and the ability to organize their own learning and respond quickly to new challenges, thanks to these amazing advances. The new digital world will be profoundly beneficial to society with an abundance of information available at our fingertips. It has never been a better time to be a worker with special skills or the right education, because businesses will use technology to create value.
A place for INNOVATION St John’s is a collaborative, online, interconnected learning community. Our teachers motivate their students to use new technologies, to source real time information and to create and publish their work. They are being well prepared for a rapidly changing future.
For more information email jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au or phone 07 3372 0176
However, technological innovation will also disrupt the world of work, as we know it. If a task can be automated it will be. Boundaries will cease to matter and work that can be performed offshore will be. There will be under employment and unemployment. The economy will be reshaped and jobs that we have not even thought of will be invented. At St John’s we are actively preparing our students, with the best education possible at each stage of their education. The real and lasting skills that will assist young people to cope in the new world are what some might call the ‘soft skills’. In addition to being highly literate in English and Mathematics, and adept with technology, young people will need to think for themselves, to have maintained their childhood creativity and inquisitive nature; to be culturally sensitive, socially and emotionally competent; to be resilient when the unexpected happens; to possess high level interpersonal skills and the confidence and ability to lead and to participate in teams. The imperative for young people is to have plenty of opportunities to develop these skills as a foundation for work in the new digital age. A St John’s education will prepare your child for this exciting future. Our first Open Day for 2015 will be 7 March or you can request a personal tour by contacting the Registrar email jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au

Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Carols draws a huge crowd again
Not even a late change of the date, due to wet weather, could stop the crowds from coming to what has become one of Forest Lake’s showcase community events of the year. The Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Carols was a huge success with thousands of residents attending and experiencing a true sense of community. With the support of the local Heritage Community Bank and Forest Lake Combined Churches, local singers, dancers and musicians showcased their talent in what can only be described as a thoroughly entertaining and professional event. The Forest Lake Community Events Association would like to sincerely thank all the sponsors, performers and all the behind the scenes people who helped ensure the event ran smoothly. If you are interested in being part of the team to plan for the 2015 event, please contact either Katrina Spencer on 0419 766 164 or Linda Paton on 0402 061 907.

Finance Corner
WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.
Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues
For those of you who may be contemplating purchasing a rental property, or perhaps have recently done so, it is important to obtain an acceptable report detailing depreciation and capital allowances which can be claimed against the rental income. Typically, this report will outline on an asset by asset basis the amount of depreciation you can claim under two methods, namely the diminishing value or prime cost basis. Items costing less than $300, and not forming part of a set, are fully deductible in the year of purchase. So what is the difference? The diminishing value rate is calculated by dividing the effective life of the asset (the ATO has published “safe harbour” rates for these) into two. Thus, an asset with a deemed effective life of 10 years would have a diminishing value depreciation rate of 20%, that is, each year the depreciation is calculated by multiplying the written down value (WDV) of the previous year by 20%. Example A rental property’s asset’s cost is $10,000 and the effective life is 10 years. The first year’s depreciation (if held for a full year) is $2,000 and the WDV becomes $8,000. Next year the depreciation is $1,600 and the WDV is now $6,400, depreciation of $1,280 in the third year and so on. It follows that under this method the depreciation claimable becomes smaller each year and the asset is never quite written off. The prime cost method calculates the depreciation by simply dividing the cost by the effective life in years. In the above example, this would generate an even deduction of $1,000 each year until the asset is fully depreciated at the end of the tenth year. So which method should one use given that one cannot change tack midstream? If you were reasonably confident of a significant increase in taxable income a few years down the track, such that you would move into a higher marginal tax rate, the value of the deductions for tax purposes may be worth more later on under the prime cost method. However, taking into account the time value of money and the principle of a “bird in the hand is worth two in the bush” the diminishing value has tax and corresponding cashflow advantages for the first few years (four years in the above example), and would generally be preferred. This would especially be the case if income was likely to decrease in a few years, perhaps because of imminent retirement. The key issue is that there is a choice and one should therefore make a decision taking into account your personal circumstances.

Garden Group by John Prout
A Happy New Year to all the green and brown thumbs in the world of gardening. Although the wonderful season of Christmas has passed and we have treasured memories of our family gatherings, we are still in holiday mode with many families enjoying their annual vacation and trying to make sure our New Year resolutions last more than a couple of weeks. As we are still in the warmer months of the year, don’t forget to move pot plants into the shade especially if you are going on holidays. Remember a messy yard is similar to having a letter box full of uncollected junk mail advertising to any undesirables that you are away. Why not add water crystals to your garden to cover the period while you are away.
Did you give or receive a living gift for Christmas? I was fortunate to receive a Ceratopetalum gummiferum more commonly known as the NSW Christmas Bush. This attractive tree will produce a mass of white flowers followed by deep red bracts. On Australia Day why not plant an aussie native. There are many on the market like lillypillies, bottle brushes, grevilleas and many ground covers to name a few. These will reward you with many colourful flowers as well as being appreciated by our native wild life. There is a large display of plants available at Crossacres Garden Centre in Doolandella. You’ll be surprised at their low prices and remember to support your local nursery. A couple of jobs to do this month are to pick out the growing tips of the poinsettias as they will become bushier, which means more flowers in the coming winter months. Also prune bougainvillea and other climbers that may be taking over the garden and don’t forget to gather your lawn clippings as it can be composted into plant food and mulch. Important: From February our club will met on the first Tuesday of the month, details below. This is an exciting change and we look forward to meeting many more gardeners. Don’t forget, at our meetings all members and guests receive a copy of our monthly newsletter, The Good Dirt, be informed by information from the guest speaker, free plants, raffles with great gardening prizes as well as meeting friendly local gardeners to chat with. Our first bus trip for the year will be in late March or early April so watch for details as well as open garden visits. Morning tea will be served from 9.30am for a 10am start. Enjoy the holidays, give the garden plenty of water and I look forward to catching up at our next meeting on 3 February.
We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us!! Next meeting Tuesday Feb 3rd at 9.30 for a 10am start. Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove

Happy 2015! Welcome to the New Year with all the potential it brings. I love the start of a New Year because it gives a moment to stop, reflect, plan and dream about the future. For many, 2014 was a difficult year – many social commentators noted a general malaise in our society. It may not have been a particular event but there did seem to be a lack of confidence in our economy, society and community. But, now we have 2015 – a chance to reset our sails, to re-calibrate our priorities, to reach for new heights. So often, we start a new year, new job, new school, new opportunity worrying about all the ‘little things’ but fail to see what’s really important. It’s not that we don’t understand what should be important – we just fall victim to the tyranny of the urgent and miss the bigger picture. On the other hand, when we set our priorities correctly, we invest in the important things. A new year is a good time to re-set the priorities. We’re not talking about New Year’s Resolutions – they don’t usually work! What we’re talking about is stopping to re-examine where we spend our time, money and effort so that we are continually investing in the important things, which, as it happens, are not ‘things’ at all. Jesus knew the importance of setting right priorities and living by them when He said, “where your treasure is, there your heart is also.” (Matthew 6:21). In other words, the place where you invest your treasures of time, money and effort is where your heart is focused. If we let the tyranny of the urgent dictate our priorities, our treasure ends up being invested there. In December, our family welcomed a new member – a baby boy. I look into his face and see potential. I see a wonderful gift from God, uniquely and wonderfully made. I see someone who can make the world a better place (as we all can). As I’ve looked into my little boy’s eyes, God has lifted my own eyes to see beyond the immediate and look to the future – to dream. My prayer for you and your family is that you take the opportunity of a New Year to reset, re-calibrate, reprioritise and to dream! God bless you and your family as you set your priorities and dream for 2015!

I hope you had a Merry Christmas and a wonderful new year! It is incredible to know that 2015 has already arrived. During December I was honoured to visit and support Happy House Playgroup with their Christmas Wishing Tree Appeal sponsored by Kmart. The Forest Lake based group took part in the Kmart initiative, which annually helps collect more than half a million gifts to spread some festive cheer to the less fortunate. In other festive news, the annual community Christmas party was again held at the Dutch Club, and it was wonderful to catch up with so many members of the Forest Lake community. It was a pleasure to thank those who help the community so selflessly, and I think the afternoon was a great break from the hustle and bustle of work and school. It is definitely an event you should try to attend in 2015. Let me finish by saying that January is a time for friendship and support within the community. It is as easy as making sure your neighbour is doing okay, and ensuring that your home is ready for storm season. We have already seen some extraordinary weather in the Forest Lake area, and it does not look like stopping for a while. Remember that the Energex power outage hotline is 13 62 62 if you are experiencing electrical supply problems, and to report fallen power lines call 13 19 62. If I can be of any help on such matters, please contact my Electorate Office on 3372 3207 or email inala@parliament. qld.gov.au and speak with myself or my staff who are more than willing to help.
