On 1st June the Parkinson Ward Multicultural and Dragonboat Festival was held at the Lake and it was great to see so many residents come and enjoy the festivities. The Rotary Club of Forest Lake hosted a Citzenship Ceremony from 9am – 10am, which was wonderful. Festivals such as this promote greater understanding of many different cultures and serve to enhance harmony in our community and in our city. Many residents will have noticed the weed harvester back in the Lake in early April removing 90 tonnes of weed and also again in late May. This program of ongoing maintenance continues to improve the state of the Lake. Well done to Forest Lake State High School students who have undertaken a community project in co-operation with OzHarvest to assist those in our community who are less fortunate. I am pleased to support this project which is a worthwhile initiative being driven by the students. It is wonderful to have students in our community who are willing to step up and help others. Congratulations to St John’s Anglican College on the success of their Carnival on 17 May, a great effort by so many volunteers working hard behind the scenes over a long period. I was pleased to have been able to provide funding for the stage through the Parkinson Ward Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund. I would also like to extend my thanks to the St John’s College students who tended to many of our local ladies for the Mother’s Day High Tea; it was a wonderful event once again and you do our community proud. I would like to remind residents of the upcoming kerbside cleanup for our local suburbs which is scheduled for pickup as follows: • Pallara and Heathwood the week commencing 9 June; • Forest Lake the week commencing 16 June; • Doolandella the week commencing 23 June. All large items are to be placed on the kerbside over the weekend prior to collection commencing. For information on what items are able to be placed on the footpath, please log on to the Brisbane City Council website www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/environment-waste/ rubbish-tips-and-bins/rubbish-collections/kerbsidecollection/acceptable-items/index.htm.

Personally Speaking
By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis
How much time do you spend on social media sites? Facebook, twitter and pinterest are fast replacing many hobbies and becoming our default when it comes to down time. I recently listened to a talk that gave some frightening statistics regarding our usage of social media and what it’s doing to our brains. It seems that part of our brain shuts down when we are using these social media sites, in order for our brain to cope with the barrage of information coming in. And when part of our brain is shut down, we become unattentive to those around us. Essentially, said the speaker, we become numb. Apparently, the worst offender of overuse of social media is my age group (which is the 40-somethings, in case you were wondering!). And the tables have, if not completely turned, at least tilted with teenagers being the ones complaining of their parents seeming addiction to their devices and wishing their mum or dad would spend less time on their phones/tablets. The thing I find interesting is that I’m noticing a real trend among my friend circle towards lessening the usage of social media. There is the, now well known, trick of everyone piling their phones in the middle of the table when out for dinner and the first to reach for their phone picks up the bill for the whole table. Families are placing a basket inside the front door in which each family member deposits their device when they come home - and that’s where the device stays for the whole evening. We need to get back to real connection. And I think the tide is starting to turn. We were all charmed by facebook, looking up old school friends and past work colleagues, but I wonder if we’re not all becoming a little jaded and have figured out that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Recognising that really being present with people in person is far better than ‘liking’ someone’s status on facebook and having a pseudo relationship is a big step in the right direction. I’m loving the fact that my friends and I are all realising this at the same time. I recently went away for a night with three friends. The only time a phone came out was to take a photo and we sat and talked for roughly six hours! And the best part was that not one of us felt the need to broadcast our exact movements to the whole of facebook! Despite what the people who make money from social media would have us believe, we can survive without the internet. More than that, we can thrive! I’m excited to notice this hint of disconnecting from our devices and really truly connecting with those around us. How about you? Are you disconnecting in order to reconnect? If not, should you be?

Your Teeth Your Smile by Dr Paul Holliday Why do I need to go to the dentist every six months? That is the question. It is a very good question with some interesting answers. One of the main reasons that dentists recommend a clean and checkup every six months is to maintain good oral health. It really doesn’t matter that you brush and floss twice a day perfectly (are you really flossing twice a day?). Many people are more susceptible to tartar or calculus formation which means it needs to be cleaned off before it can do any harm to the foundation of your teeth. The foundation is your gums and jawbone. Without these your teeth would not stay in your mouth (hint - this means your teeth fall out). One of the problems with periodontal disease or gum disease is there are usually no symptoms (until the foundations have been damaged). Everyone knows what happens in a house or building when the foundations are damaged. Normally that means you need to carry out expensive restoration work or even completely rebuild, depending on the damage. This is a bit harder to do with teeth once the foundations have been damaged. Luckily, the foundations are fairly deep usually. Preventive maintenance is always less expensive than trying to fix something after the damage has been done. There are different risks that your teeth, gums and jawbone have to endure. One is damage to the foundations (gum disease) as we have discussed, another is decay (that is like termites eating away at your house out of sight), still another is your bite or the way your teeth meet together. Your teeth work like gears when your upper and lower jaws come together to eat or drink or swallow. If the gears are in harmony, then everything works well but if the gears aren’t working in harmony that can damage your teeth, gums and jawbone all together. The human body is an amazing machine and it will tend to cope with this problem for a while but, unfortunately, there will come a time when the damage has been too great and the whole machine starts to collapse. That can be a big problem when it occurs. Checking regularly can nip problems like these in the bud before they become big problems. If your mouth (teeth, gums, jawbone etc) were a car it would be worth about $250,000. I am fairly certain that anyone with a car like that would get their car serviced regularly. Luckily we don’t have to change the oil when you come in for the service on your mouth. Everyone is different. Pretty obvious statement but it is definitely true of mouths. Some people may need to come more than every six months to maintain, some less than six months. Everyone thinks the condition of their teeth, foundations and gears stay the same. Unfortunately, time and age cause things to deteriorate. Things don’t stay the same in your mouth no matter how much you think they do. It would be much nicer if they did. If you are concerned about anything above or would like a checkup and clean, give the friendly team at Lakedental a call on 3879 8999.

Amy Winner follows the Yellow Brick Road
With many achievements under her belt, local resident, Amy Winner is set to take to the stage once again, this time as Dorothy in the Queensland Musical Theatre company production of The Wizard of Oz playing this month at the Schonell Theatre. As a past school captain of Grand Avenue State School, Dux of the School in 2005 at Forest Lake State High School and recipient of two university scholarships, Amy is no stranger to hard work. Residents may know Amy from her involvement as a soloist for the last 15 years at the Forest Lake Community Carols, proving that performance is in her DNA. Amy has been on the stage and performing since she was three years old. In primary school, she frequented the Ipswich Eisteddfod, where she won the aggregate trophy twice and through school and dance troupes was involved in several productions including her first female lead as Linda Street (Lois Lane) in “The Man of Steel”. Studying voice and dance privately, Amy has gone onto further studies in these areas, including short courses with NIDA and completing The Performance Workshop year long artists program in 2013, scoring the female lead in their auditioned musical. Amy has a particular passion for singing and is a member of the Ignite Choir, performing as their auditioned soloist for their end of year performances in 2012. Her most recent productions include The Boy From Oz (Ignatians) and performing as Cinderella, in Cinderella and Prince Charming’s Wedding Celebration (Pen2Stage) - a children’s musical princess show touring the Phillipines in December last year. Amy is also a dentist and qualified group fitness instructor and spent a lot of time during her study tutoring children in math, English and music. While her interests are quite varied, Amy feels the common thread is that she loves sharing magic and joy in all that she does and particularly bringing smiles to little faces. Bookings for Queensland Musical Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz are now open. The Wizard of Oz plays from 11-15 June at the Schonell Theatre, University of Queensland. Curtain is at 7.30 p.m. from Wednesday to Saturday with 1.30 p.m. matinees on Saturday, 14 June and Sunday, 15 June. The season is only one week long so bookings are essential to avoid disappointment. Bookings may be made via the Queensland Musical Theatre website: www.queenslandmusicaltheatre.com/ index/tickets/ or via Ticketek Tel: 132 849.

This year, the fundraising morning tea will be held at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands on Sunday 15 June at 9am. The cost of the morning tea, which includes raffles, is $30, $20 of which goes directly to the Cancer Council along with raffle proceeds, with the remaining $10 going to Queensland Lions Soccer Club to pay for the morning tea. Abel & David Wan Dental Practice Dr Abel Wan B.D.Sc (Hons) Qld Dr David Wan B.OralH GradDipDent Chelsea is pictured with her coach - Master Ben Hartmann. Chelsea Hobday at 14 years old has been involved in martial arts over half her life, starting in the sport at just six years old. Being bullied sparked her desire to learn the art of Kung Fu where Chelsea earned her black sash in 2010 before developing an interest in Taekwondo. Chelsea trained in both martial arts in unison, and successfully competed in both. So far, she has won over 90 medals in local, state, national and international competitions. By mid-2011, Chelsea’s passion had turned solely to Taekwondo, and she made the decision to focus on Taekwondo. She received her Second Dan (Bo) in Taekwondo in 2013 and will be grading for her Second Dan this month. Chelsea recently earned a spot on the Australian team, at a selection competition in Perth, for the Oceania Championships to be held in Sydney this August as well as a place in the World Championships to be held in Azerbaijan on 25-27 July, beating 350 other elite black belt competitors for the prized positions. Chelsea currently trains six days every week and co-instructs with Grand Master Michael Tan of Tan’s Cooparoo; she takes great pleasure assisting other students, and helps out wherever she can. Chelsea was awarded Junior Student of the Year, and this year received the award for Senior Student of the Year at Tan’s Coorparoo. Chelsea has aspirations to compete at the Olympic Games. She would also like to compete at the Commonwealth Games in 2018, where Taekwondo will be making its first appearance as an exhibition sport. Chelsea also dreams of owning her own Taekwondo Club and teaching Taekwondo to many eager students. Chelsea loves promoting her sport and gets great pleasure from assisting fellow Taekwondo students whenever possible.

It’s always easier to talk about issues that are comfortable and that aren’t going to upset people. But, I think it comes as a responsibility when one writes a column called, Family Focus that I address one of the most serious issues facing families today – domestic violence. Domestic violence is vile and evil. However, many families are caught behind a false veil of privacy. One of the most prominent social maxims in our culture is, “what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors.” Whether because of threats, disempowerment, embarrassment, or other reasons, we are left with the disturbing estimate by the Australian Bureau of Statistics that 60% of domestic violence cases go unreported. What is even more disturbing is that one recent report says, “domestic violence easily exceeded street crime as the fastest growing form of assault.” These statistics make for uncomfortable reading but we need to see them because it is estimated that one in three Australian women over the age of 15 have experienced physical or sexual violence at some time in their lives. Additionally, one in three victims of domestic violence are men. Can there really be any doubt that domestic violence is something that must be a matter to families? The first important thing we can do to address this epidemic is acknowledge it. Let’s bring it out of the dark and show people that we want to address it. One of the great commands of the Bible is to “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.” (Isaiah 1:17) Our Church motto is “Every Person Is Important To God.” Domestic violence and abuse disempowers, devalues and destroys people. Our desire is to do the opposite – to empower, value and build up people. What are some practical steps you can take? • If you are experiencing domestic abuse, know this: you do not need to accept it! You can go to the police and get help. Also, have a look at the White Ribbon website at www.whiteribbon.org.au to find a list of organisations that can help; • If you are an abuser, know this: You need to stop! You need to get some help. Go to the White Ribbon website to find out what is available; • If you know someone who is being abused or suspect it may be happening, or just want to know more, go to the White Ribbon website for information. Domestic abuse is a complex issue that needs to be addressed by governments and by communities. Domestic abuse is an issue we can all do something about. Let’s decide as a community “Family violence – Australia says NO!”

Walkers of all ages are welcome to stride or stroll at the Cystic Fibrosis Queensland (CFQ) and LJ Hooker Forest Lake’s fundraiser on Sunday 27th July. Join CFQ and your local LJ Hooker Forest Lake for their 5th year in hosting the Great Strides 2014 Walkathon to raise funds to directly help CF families in Queensland. The fund raising goal for this years Great Strides Walkathon is $10 000 which will benefit support programs for families living with cystic fibrosis in Queensland. CF is Australia’s most common life threatening genetic condition – and there is no cure. A child is born with it every four days, yet many people have never heard of it or do not know what the condition really is. It is degenerative chronic illness that primarily affects the lungs and digestive systems. CFQ assists local families and individuals touched by this dreadful disease with practical and emotional support. There will be a special visit from Mr. Hooker Bear, sausage sizzle, raffles and the Nova Sandman (Nova 106.9) will be there to hand out prizes, so come and join in the fun. Take strides towards conquering CF. Join Great Strides’ 4.4 km from LJ Hooker Forest Lake, registration opens at 8.30am with the walk to begin at 9.30am. Donations are still needed for the day, no matter how large or small, in the form of goods or services that can be used to make this a fun family day. Forest Lake resident, Belinda Bischa and Centenary resident, Lester Skorka, have both been involved in DanceSport for over 30 years, and have known each other since they were teenagers. They danced at the same studio together with different partners before moving to different studios. Belinda continued to dance in Queensland and competed at a high level throughout Queensland and Nationally. In 1999, she retired from competitive dancing, but was coaxed back to perform in the 2000 Olympics Closing Ceremony. Lester was transferred to Melbourne with work and competed with his wife at both a State and National level. In 1992, he stopped competing due to the arrival of his first child. In 2008, after returning to Brisbane a few years earlier he met up with Belinda and they decided to dance together for exercise and fitness. The pair were excited to compete in the Australian National Dance Association National Championships in New South Wales last month, winning both their events in Masters 1, Open Standard and Open New Vogue. “We came home with two perpetual trophies, which was quite interesting to bring home on the plane!” said Belinda. “We have danced together competitively for over five years and love everything about Dancesport.” The recent wins add to their collection, having been State and Australian Champions numerous times.

Now in its nineteenth year, the Young Writers Award is continuing to foster the next generation of Queensland’s budding writing talent, with entries open to Queensland residents aged 18 to 25. “The flourishing careers of previous winners, runners up and entrants from the Young Writers Award have inspired confidence and determination in future writers,” State Librarian Janette Wright said. 2013 winner Kahli Scott’s (pictured) winning short story Lingerie has since been featured on Birdee, an online magazine for young girls, and Kahli has begun work on a novel-length project that expands on the themes and tone of Lingerie using a new set of characters. The 2014 submissions will be assessed by a judging panel comprised of local authors, journalists and editors, including Frances Whiting (Sunday Mail columnist), Simon Groth (Concentrate), Ellen van Neerven (2013 David Unaipon Award winner) and Jarryd Luke (Director, Townsville Writers & Publishers Centre Inc). The Young Writers Award winner and first runner up will receive $2,000 and $500 prize money respectively, along with a 12 month membership to the Queensland Writers Centre and the Australian Writer’s Marketplace online, and admission to a Brisbane Writers Festival seminar and Queensland Writers Centre industry seminar. Entries close at 5pm on Friday 18 July 2014. For full details on the application process or to pick up short story writing tips, visit slq.qld.gov.au/whats-on/awards/ywa The Young Writers Award is funded by the Library Board of Queensland, and supported by Queensland Writers Centre, Brisbane Writers Festival, and the Australian Writer’s Marketplace.

Roses for Mums at the Lodge On Mothers’ Day Sunday 11 May our Lions and their guests (see photo) visited the lodge to meet the mothers resident there. The ladies were delighted to meet and chat with us. They were each presented with a “Lions Rose of Life”. The silk roses were a fund raiser for medical research. It was heartening to bring cheer and a smile to the seventy five mothers resident at the lodge. Lions Help Measles Vaccination Program Lions in Botswana assisted the country’s Ministry of Health with a five day measles vaccination program which resulted in the immunisation of 200,000 children. The Lions project was funded by the Lions Clubs International Fund (LCIF) and included social mobilisation, education, accessing remote areas and answering questions. According to the authorities, Lions activities helped to reach more people.

Forest Lake Area
Garden Group by John Prout
Our first month of winter is here. Time to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday and get out the electric blanket for those chilly nights ahead. Would you believe June once had only 29 days and was the fourth month of the year? Back in 46BC, Julius Caesar reformed the calendar and made January 1 the beginning of the year and increased June to 30 days. Some authorities believe the Romans named the month after Juno, who was the Goddess of Marriage. Maybe this is why ladies like to be June brides. While there will be plenty of cool weather ahead, the winter solstice means that by the end of the month the days will start to become longer. Although winter is a time for our gardens to have a well-earned rest, there is still plenty of colours in the garden with sweet peas, cyclamens, pansies and not forgetting the wonderful colour of the freesias, jonquils and other bulb plants showing their colours. One advantage is I don’t have to mow the lawn every two weeks. Some of the vegetables that don’t mind the cooler months are broccoli, snow peas, cabbage and onions. Spring onions will grow faster than the normal onions, however, make sure the vegetables receive around six hours of sunshine daily. Our next bus trip will be a South Coast Herb & History tour on Saturday 19 July. We will be visiting Mudbrick Cottage & Herb Garden in Mudgeeraba, then onto the historic township of Tyalgum where we will have a two course lunch at Flutterbies Cottage Café. Cost of lunch is included in the fare. In the afternoon, we visit Banana Cabana Fruit Barn & Bush Tucker Gardens with a tour of the ‘bush tucker orchard’ in the schedule. If you have not received a flyer, please contact me, details below, until 13 June then either Heather (phone 3879 2129) or Jill (phone 3372 6800) and a flyer will be sent to you. Cost of the trip is $50 for club members and $55 for guests. Last month, our members Graham and Andrea Donnelly opened their garden. Just less than two acres, their property has an array of many flowers, including some large roses as well as a large vegetable garden and several fruit trees. Twenty three of our members enjoyed the tour of the garden as well as a delicious afternoon tea. At our next meeting the guest speaker will be Ian Wintle talking on “Passion for Plants”. Ian is well known throughout the gardening world and we visited his home when it was opened as part of the Australian Open Garden Programme. Ian will also have some plants for sale at very reasonable prices. I hope to catch up with you, share a cuppa and have a chat after the meeting.
We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us! Next meeting Tuesday June 10th, 2014. Forest Lake Community House, Alpine Place

Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach
The monthly outing was attending “Merry Melodies” with Ian Stenlake as the major drawcard at the Logan Entertainment Centre. Probians were most impressed with the venue, and enjoyed the entertainment as well as the lunch. The May speaker was Geoff Day, National Account Manager of Nerada Tea Pty Ltd. At the outset Geoff surprised his audience with some interesting tea statistics. This beverage is now mostly consumed by the over 35 year age group as Australians have increasingly become coffee drinkers. Australia is ranked 55th on the world table as tea drinkers. The top consumption spot is held by the United Arab Emirates and Ireland is third. More than 15 million kilograms of tea is imported annually. The speaker also gave us a brief account of the origins and history of Nerada. We learnt about the role of the Tully River and Bingal Bay that dates back to 1882 as well as the Cutten brothers of 1912, and the Great Cyclone of 1918 that destroyed the plantation. Dr Maauff, in the 1950s with CSIRO, went searching for the remnants of the Lost Plantation and found some remains of tea plants that had survived for forty years. At the back of his surgery at Innisfail, the doctor started a nursery and in 1965 planted by hand 200 acres with tea plants. He was assisted by some of his followers and also helped by school students. The first leaf tea was sent to Sydney and Melbourne. Burns Philp was approached to assist with expansion to 400 acres and in 1974 the Nerada Brand as it is now known, was launched. Normally very labour intensive, Nerada invented a mechanical harvester which can harvest 24 hours a day and works four and a half days a week. This machine harvests 4000 kilograms per hour of black tea. Nerada is one of very few Australian teas as most is imported. The life of a tea bush can be between 100-125 years old but in India it has been found that 85 years seems to be the optimum. This brand, Nerada, is Australian grown, pesticide free and packaged in Australia at Acacia Ridge. The company has an eight percent market share in Queensland. We also learnt the difference between black tea and green tea. Coles and Woolworths are the company’s biggest clients. Probians were informed where the other popular tea brands originated and where they are packaged. Geoff was plied with a plethora of questions. Val passed a vote of thanks on behalf of the Club. Retirees and semi-retirees the Probus Club is for you if you are still young at heart. Come and join us the second Tuesday of every month at the Forest Lake Hotel at 10am. You are welcome to try before you buy. More details see page 27 of this publication.
We all retire - but Probus does it better. Page 20 - June 2014 - The Lake News

catering would be provided and a massive bar tab would be included. His only request, apart from the fact that everyone have a great time, was that people pay for drinks once the generous bar tab had been exhausted and that folks help to tidy up later on in the night. That’s more than fair, all the guests thought. Well, a great time was being had by all, and indeed some got a little carried away! However, guests weren’t too happy when the bar tab ran out and it was time to clean up before leaving. “Why should I have to buy my drinks now? That lot over there used up the bar tab by consuming a lot more than me.” “We only had a few spirits...you must have consumed a few litres of wine.” “Those guys made all the mess...why don’t they do all the cleaning up?” “I’d love to clean up but I have to go now as my dog is sick at home.” “Sorry, I’ve got to be up early in the morning.” And so the excuses and allocation of blame continued. However, equally there were many who thanked the host for a fantastic party and were more than willing to help restore his home to pre-party splendour. And so the Budget 2014-15 was handed down the other week. The party had been a bit more expensive than originally thought and it was time for all the guests to do their bit and chip in a little, some more, some less. None of us like paying more tax, none of us are ecstatic when things that cost $1.00 now cost $1.25. We can all say “It’s just not fair; I now have to pay for this or for them. I never caused the problem in the first place.” Perhaps it’s time for an attitude change. Instead, let’s be thankful that we had a great party and we can probably have another great one sometime later. Despite the pain that was spread around in the Budget, Australia is without doubt the greatest country to live in (and I wasn’t born here)...let’s do our bit to keep it that way. Belonging to a community of like-minded people who share common values is very important for children and their families in today’s fast paced world. Such a community helps to provide the stability needed to focus on the things that really matter. The month of May is a time when our College families come together as a community at events, which celebrate the values for which we stand. Our annual Mother’s Day High Tea, on 10 May, not only allowed our Hospitality students the opportunity to showcase their catering skills but also over 200 Mum’s gathered and enjoyed hearing a presentation from Kim McCosker of the cookbook series “4 Ingredients”. In spite of the threatening weather all enjoyed catching up with friends and family and the warmth of community. Our very successful College Carnival on 17 May bought together St John’s families and many people from the surrounding suburbs. Students, Mums and Dad’s, Old Collegians and College supporters enjoyed the stalls, displays and performances. We are very grateful for the efforts of the Carnival convenors and all who gave their time, expertise and donations. We would like to acknowledge our major sponsor for the College Carnival, Heritage Bank Forest Lake.
The Music came to Forest Lake on 28 May when our partner schools, Kinross Wolaroi School – NSW, Radford College – ACT, Scotch College – SA and St Leonard’s College - Vic, came together for the Combined School Music Festival. Around 200 students and teachers participated in workshops led by national and international performers including Mr Peter Ingram, Head of Music at BGS, Dr Ralph Hultgren most recently Head of the Open Conservatorium, Griffith University, Mr Barrie Gott, state examiner for AMEB and Mr Andy Firth, one of the most outstanding clarinet players in the world today. Performance groups workshopped and rehearsed throughout the three days, their efforts culminating in a wonderful Gala Concert in the College Auditorium. Congratulations to all involved on such a fine standard of musicianship on display. Being connected to one another builds the foundations for trust, confidence and success in whatever we undertake in life. The St John’s community has experienced this in May and is the richer for it. Young achievers doing our community proud Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor has congratulated local young achievers who are representing our local community, on not only the State and National scene in competition but also internationally. “In our local community we have a number of young people who, through dedication and commitment to their chosen sport, are achieving personal bests and reaching the highest levels,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. Lachlan Cook represented Australia recently in the World Schools Cross Country Championships in Israel in March and performed well achieving a second place. A former Forest Lake State School School Captain, 16 year old Lachlan’s next goal is to make the Australian team for the Youth Olympic Games in China and to further represent Australia at major championships. Skye Smith represented Queensland in the National Indoor Netball Championships and was selected to represent Australia in the World Indoor Netball Association World Cup from 25 May to 2 June. Skye has been representing Queensland in the State team since 2008, and has been a member of the Australian Indoor Netball team in 2010 and 2012 and is part of the 21 and under Australian Touring team in 2013 and 2014. Chelsea Hobday competes in her sport of Taekwondo and trains six days a week and has done for the last six years with a real dream of going to the Olympics. In the last six months alone Chelsea has won the Sports Taekwondo Australian Championships, won Gold at the NZ Open and been selected to represent Australia in Azerbaijan this July at the World Championships and represent Australia at the Oceania Championships. Bailee and Braith Johnston formed a sibling double act at the State Oztag championships with both selected to represent Queensland in Oz Tag early May 2014, Bailee in the U14 Girls Team and Braith U10 Boys. They took part in the Queensland State Cup and from there were selected to represent Queensland at the Oz Tag State Of Origin held in Canberra 3-4 May 2014. Bailee was also selected as the Most Valuable Player of the U14 girls for the whole tournament. Family sporting prowess also runs deep in the Parai family with Genesis, Harlem and Marino all being selected to play in the Queensland OzTag team in the State of Origin competition in Canberra in May. In the State Carnival, Harlem represented the Under 13 girls, Marino in the under 14 girls and captained her team, whilst Genesis captained the under 16 boys team. Cr Angela Owen-Taylor has assisted all of these young achievers with donations to assist them to attend these events, and to recognise their efforts in pursuing their goals.
Forest Lake Rotary Club by Don Mitchell
Rotary shows it’s face in many ways. On the International stage there are many Humanitarian Projects like Polio Plus; Malaria Eradication and closer to home there are projects like Donations In Kind (Dik) and Computers For Kids and I guess I could fill the page with many more. The thing is, every little dollar from every little Rotary Club around the world, it all adds up to a large contribution to Rotary International Project Fund which can then support the wonderful global Endeavour’s that are a hallmark of Rotary. However, it is the local face of Rotary that I would like to highlight here in Forest Lake and that is besides the ongoing projects such as Bowelscan kits in the local Pharmacies, Project Love and Care, Youth Enrichment Activities, Sausage Sizzle Fundraisers. More so it is the quiet presence Rotary had helping organize the recent Citizenship Ceremony Neighbourhood Festival at Calamvale Park and a future one at Forest Lake itself in conjunction with the Dragon Boat Festival. Thinking back to ANZAC Day, we had Rotarians on the ground helping the RSL and Rotarians in the air flying a formation of Remembrance over the marchers with Cessna C172 aeroplanes kindly donated by the Royal Queensland Aero Club. As a small Club, it seems that we pop up everywhere in the most unexpected places and, of course, we are always on the lookout for new projects and especially new members who can come from any walk of life. So if you are interested in joining with us in Rotary, why don’t you call Bob Briton on 0412 982 566 or Bruce Pocklington on 0418 198 778 as well as Google search Rotary Club of Forest Lake on the web.

STATE MEMBER FOR ALGESTER I would like to congratulate the Lions Club of Forest Lake for organising and supervising the Walk with the Lions fundraising walk in support of the Leukaemia Foundation on Sunday 18 May. I joined with 80 residents to walk twice around the Lake to raise much needed funds for the ongoing research into Leukaemia, a disease which affects many families and individuals in our community. I would also like to congratulate the Lions Club of Forest Lake on this, their 20th year of service to the Forest Lake community. Members past and present need to be commended for the many projects and programs they have engaged in over the last 20 years to improve our community and the lives of residents. I was also privileged to be able to join another well known community organisation which celebrates 20 years of service to the Forest Lake community this year. The Baptist Church of Forest Lake held a beautiful morning service on the banks of the Lake which drew a large crowd. Congratulations to Pastor Mark Mackay and the members of the church. I wish them every success for the next 20 years. Grand Avenue State School, I am very happy to announce, has been awarded over $28 000 to support their music program. Having attended a number of music nights showcasing the school’s wonderful musical skills, I know this significant investment will only allow students to improve what is already a great program and in turn allow students to expand on their already fantastic music skills. The 2nd Algester Queensland Day Festival was held on the 1st of June and what a wonderful day. A great crowd gathered to celebrate the birth of our wonderful state and to experience an afternoon of great music, dancing and food. The celebrations started with a bang from the six pounder cannons from the Victoria Barracks Historical Society ‘A’ Battery firing a salute to our wonderful state. I would like to thank all those community groups from Forest Lake that took part and I look forward to next year’s event.

These poisons cause a vitamin K deficiency in the body. As a result, the clotting factors that are dependent on vitamin K (II, VII, IX and X) become depleted, leading to a coagulopathy or bleeding disorder. Because the circulating vitamin K dependent factors are not affected, there is a lag time anywhere from 12 hours up to seven days between exposure to the poison and development of clinical signs. Ultimately, a bleeding disorder will occur in some location in the body, either internally or externally. Common areas affected are joints, bladder cavity, thoracic and abdominal cavities, and the gastrointestinal tract. If exposure has just occurred, your pet can be forced to vomit to remove the poison before it is absorbed. If exposure has happened in the last seven days, and your pet has not bleed yet, then vitamin K can be started and the situation monitored. If you pet is bleeding, a blood transfusion will be needed as well as vitamin K. There are newer and older rat baits. Warfarin is the oldest and less potent, while Brodifacoum is one of the most potent. Warfarin toxicity however is still fatal, the difference being that Brodifacoum needs at least twice the dose and twice the duration of vitamin K therapy. Despite using vitamin K, clotting times should be monitored especially for 24-72 hours after stopping vitamin K. Pets should be kept quiet and to avoid trauma and bruising that happens easily when these poisons are in your pet’s body. Pets seem attracted to these poisons, so be careful where they are placed and stored.
News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club Update We had a new experience for some of the club members by playing at a course that was new to our regular Sunday games – Sandy Gallop Golf Club at Ipswich. Although some had played here over the years, the wind and the cold made for an experience for all of the 26 by Peter Cuttance members who turned out on the 4th May. The course offered a challenge at most holes with sloping fairways and dog legs on many of the holes, small with Forest Lake Social Golf Clubgreens Update fast breaks. The comments after the game were encouraging with Sandy Gallop a likely contender for future games. Winners on the day were in A Grade Gil Vargas, runner up was Steve Donnell. B Grade winner Cory Almond, runner up was Jason Lee. C grade winner Peter Cuttance, runner up was Carolyn Nottingham. Longest drive winner in A Grade Steve Donnell, B Grade Pat Ayling and in C Grade Michael Eveleigh. Only one winner on the nearest the pin holes Peter Cuttance and no winner of the approach shot. Congratulations to all the winners. Our next games are 1st June at Gainsborough at 8.04am Tee time, and 22nd June a Palmer Colonial (Gold Coast) at 7.30am. The Forest lake Social Golf Club is proudly sponsored by the Heritage Community Bank Branch at Forest Lake and the Jindalee Golf Club.

s Year 6 1 or un F R & Pictured are last year’s recipients of this well deserved award Next Saturday will see the winners of South West Progress Association’s Queensland Day Volunteer Awards announced, and during the nomination period it was wonderful to be inundated with inspiring stories of locals who contribute their own time and effort, volunteering through different community projects and initiatives across the entire Inala electorate. Many of the nominees come from the local Forest Lake area, another strong reminder of the wonderful spirit that our Forest Lake community possesses. It is always a great pleasure to honour the volunteers who selflessly contribute to the community, as we thank the generosity of these locals who work not for acclaim of applause, but simply out of the goodness of their hearts. I hope that all members of the Forest Lake community celebrate Queensland Day in their own way, a day that commemorates the anniversary of Queensland’s separation from the then colony of New South Wales in 1859. So much has changed in the 155 years that followed, including an interstate rivalry showcased by State of Origin. I’d like to wish our boys good luck for the remainder of the series. If you have any queries about the Forest Lake area, please feel free to contact my office on 3372 3207.

Australia Zoo is well known to most Australians, none more so than Queenslander’s, and was our destination for a fun day out. This attraction has grown in leaps and bounds since its humble beginnings in 1974. The late Steve Irwin made sure of that, by bringing the wildlife of the world to our TV screens with his usual passion. Together with his wife and the support of his family, Australia Zoo soon became a well-recognised conservation area, aiming most of his enthusiasm at the younger generation to appreciate and care for our wild life, something our older generation was not so careful with. Morning tea was served by the committee when we stopped at the Roadhouse Burpengary and as usual they did a great job; thanks ladies. Once that was over, we headed for the zoo which was a little way further up the highway and arrived at 9.45am. Everyone alighted the coach and were able to wander around at our leisure to visit all the residents. As no lunch was organised we were able to choose what we wanted. Some people brought sandwiches and a drink in a small cooler bag and others chose to buy there. All too soon it was nearing 2.30pm and time to hit the road for home on our trusty Concorde Coach. Forest Lake 50+ Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am, and new members are always welcome. For more information on the club and its activities, please contact Kay (Treasurer) on 3278 9406 or Les (Activities Officer) on 2379 9449 or mob 0446 377 618, or email fl50plusc@gmail.com Date claimers for the next three meetings are June 20th, July 18th and August 15th 2014.
