Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin It’s getting awfully close to the half way mark for 2015. Time really flies when you are having fun and enjoying life to the full. At May’s Branch Meeting, we celebrated Mother’s Day and then settled in our seats to be entertained by Richard Waterson. Richard sang a number of familiar tunes. All those young at heart made the most of the entertainment and bopped along. The Zone 101 Conference for 2015 was also held at Lions. This annual Conference was very well attended by members of the 16 branches in our Zone. Informative speakers, good food and entertainment. Our CEO Michael O’Neill gave members a very good insight to the recent Federal Budget and what it will mean to all seniors. Special thanks to the Forest Lake Crochet Group for the lovely crocheted rug for a raffle prize at the Conference.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis It seems to me that one of the biggest problems with us as a society is a lack of self-reflection. I’m amazed at the number of times when I’m chatting with someone and I ask a question that the answer comes back “I don’t know...I’ve never really thought about that before. It seems that people don’t reflect and ponder on things like we used to. Obviously, too much self-reflection can lead to, at worst, narcissism or just plain old selfishness but it is necessary to have insight into ourselves, others and the world around us. And psychology backs up the importance of selfreflection and insight with many therapists recommending mindfulness or meditation in some form or another. I was listening to the radio the other day - and I’ll show my age by saying it was an ABC station! - and it was discussed that it is so important to allow children to process and self-reflect at the end of their school day, and how, often, as parents it can be easy to overlook this important part of the day. You see, if, as children, we have the opportunity to process the happenings of the day with a parent, we begin our journey of self-reflection. Without self-reflection, it’s harder to learn from mistakes, we go on to repeat behaviour that is potentially harmful because we haven’t been taught how to reflect on our actions and learn how to make different choices that will result in a more positive outcome. What we lack as a society is also what psychologists call ‘insight’, which is according to the dictionary, ‘penetrating mental vision or discernment; faculty of seeing into inner character or underlying truth.’ We barely know ourselves, so how can we even begin to have an understanding of others or the world at large? Some of you may have read this column in the April edition about noise and our need for some quiet - not just audibly but internally. I think the amount of noise we contend with on a daily basis is directly related to our lack of self reflection and insight. With so much else going on, with so many things vying for our attention, it can be hard to break away and just ‘be’. I’ve said it before but it bears saying again - we are human BEings, not human DOings. We desperately need to step aside from our lives, take a breath and take some time to think! And not only to think but to ponder, wonder and ruminate. Some of you may know that there is a labyrinth located at St Catherine’s Anglican church, 43 Macfarlane Street, Middle Park. The labyrinth is a wonderful way to take that time out - even just 15 minutes - to simply be alone with your thoughts and feelings and reconnect with yourself. The labyrinth is open to the public, available day or night, won’t cost you a cent and is just a short drive away. Why not make time to get some space in this fast paced life we all live? Drop the kids off at school, take a detour on your way to work, or whatever your daily routine is, leave the phone in the car and just...breathe.

By Dr Paul Holliday

Several years ago the Australian Dental Association, (ADA), announced that in Sweden and Norway the use of mercurysilver, or amalgam, dental fillings has been banned. Now there are many countries that have banned its use. There has been much discussion about the health or environmental risks of the use of mercury fillings in those countries for some time. However, in Australia, the USA and few other countries the use of mercury in dental fillings is still considered safe by the government and the ADA. An alternative to the mercury-silver fillings is a resin or composite filling. Since these fillings are tooth coloured many health funds companies felt they were only cosmetic and therefore did not give much rebate for them. Resin fillings are more technique sensitive and time consuming to bond into place. But if a person is starting to get decay around a resin filling the decay can be easily seen compared to the decay starting between a black mercury filling and the white enamel. The tooth coloured fillings also make it easier to see decay starting on x-rays unlike the old amalgam fillings. Glass ionomer cement (called GIC) is another alternative to amalgam fillings. This is not as strong as composite resin but has some advantages that make it an excellent choice in some situations. It can help repair teeth and protect against decay by absorbing fluoride from your toothpaste and transferring it into the tooth. Porcelain inlays or onlays are another alternative to fillings. The porcelain material is harder than the resin and amalgam metal and therefore will last much longer than the resin filling. These are also bonded into place and help to reinforce the tooth for strength. These fillings are classed as indirect fillings as they are made up outside your mouth unlike normal fillings which are usually constructed inside the tooth itself. In years gone by the material used for indirect fillings was gold but nowadays porcelain because it is tooth coloured is used much more often. Zirconia is also used for these indirect restorations because of its hardness and its white colour. If you have mercury-silver or amalgam fillings in your mouth the chances are you will be fine. It is considered unethical for a dentist to advise a patient to have amalgam fillings removed for health reasons. If a patient wants to have them removed for their own concerns or even for cosmetic reasons it is okay. If you have questions concerning amalgam fillings you should ask your dentist. If you do not have a dental home, you are welcome to call our happy team and schedule an examination or a consultation so we can discuss your unique situation.

Many residents would know the work of Ann George of Project Love and Care and her wonderful band of volunteers that provide clothing and personal items for children entering foster care. Ann and her helpers sort and organise literally bags and bags of donated clothing each week and lugging these heavy bags of clothing is not only problematic for health reasons, but makes what is already a tiring task, exhausting. When Dan Baldwin of Forest Lake National Seniors was assisting Ann and the volunteer staff recently, he noticed that the system of transporting heavy loads of donations from one area to another was an issue. “After talking with Ann, we devised a type of trolley for her volunteer workers and her to use,” said Dan. “I contacted Mr Sidd Metha at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre to see if he could assist. After a visit to Ann’s house with myself, Mr Metha advised that the prisoners working in one of the workshops would be able to make the trolleys for Ann. “I have worked with Mr Metha in the past and they have been most helpful, especially in restoration work at the heritage trust property of Wolston House. They have also assisted National Seniors Forest Lake with a number of projects as well as other projects in the Inala and Goodna areas.” Mr Metha presented the finished trolleys to Ann just two weeks after they met and discussed the project. “The work completed is a win-win situation for prisoners and the greater community,” said Dan. Ann and her helpers were thrilled with the two new trolleys and very appreciative of the efforts of Dan and other members of the Forest Lake National Seniors, Sidd Metha and those at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, to help make their work much easier.

The RSPCA relies heavily on the generous donations of blankets, sheets and towels from the public to keep dogs and cats warm and cosy throughout the season. A recent news story on the RSPCA’s annual appeal prompted the Centre Management team at Forest Lake Shopping Centre to take action. The centre has created a collection point for donations outside its Coles store and donated bedding will delivered to the Wacol RSPCA. Forest Lake Shopping Centre marketing manager, Linda Loosley, said, “The residents of Forest Lake are well known for being enthusiastic animal lovers, and in addition, the local community is renowned for their generosity in support of charities such as the RSPCA.” “With the help of the Forest Lake community we are looking forward to making a positive difference to the animals the RSPCA care for by providing clean, warm bedding for them to snuggle up in.” “We would like to urge all animal lovers to donate what they can towards this appeal to help make a difference this season.” Donations of clean blankets, sheets and towels can be made at the collection point outside Coles until the end of June.

Following last month’s article on Canine Parvovirus, it has come to my attention that cases of the closely related Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV), often referred to as parvovirus in cats, are being seen as well. The infection is no longer common in Australia and it is something that younger veterinarians have not yet seen. The first case to be reported in many years occurred at Lort Smith Animal Hospital, Melbourne in October 2013. Since that time, reports have included outbreaks in other areas of metropolitan Melbourne but the virus has now been documented nearly six hours north in Mildura, on the border of Victoria and NSW. Seven kittens aged five months and one 12 month old male entire cat, diagnosed by ELISA and PCR at Mildura Veterinary Hospital, are in addition to 31 cases that have been recorded over the past 12 months around Melbourne and the South of Victoria. FPV is highly resistant to physical factors and chemical substances. As with Canine Parvovirus, FPV can remain infectious in the environment for months. Infected cats shed very high titres of virus in their faeces and as such, virus can very quickly accumulate. Breeding catteries and shelters are reported to be particularly at risk. Importantly, cats that do survive infection can still shed virus up to six weeks post-recovery. Contaminated clothing, shoes, food and water bowls, cages and flooring, and even fleas have all been reported as potentially aiding the spread of FPV. The effects of infection are dramatic. Invasion of the intestinal crypt epithelium results in enteritis and diarrhoea. Invasion and replication in lymph nodes and the thymus results in depletion of lymphocytes. Bone marrow will also be affected and through the depletion of stem cells, low red and white cell counts develop. Foetal death will occur in infected queens and the developing cerebellum of the young is also targeted, resulting in cerebellar hypoplasia and ataxia. Other clinical signs include anorexia, fever, dehydration and fever. However, kittens may only present with ‘fading kitten syndrome’ whereby the kitten is normal one day, quickly fades and dies within 24 hours. There is no cure for this disease, and as for Canine Parvovirus, consists of supportive therapy only. Vaccination is the best method we have as an aid in the prevention of FPV. If your pets are not currently vaccinated, please get them up to date before we see outbreaks in Queensland.

Never too young to make a difference

Photo courtesy of Tracey from Equs Images For most parents, when a child expresses interest in having a pet, it’s usually the parents who end up with the responsibility of the day to day care of the animal. Not so for mum Rachel whose six year old daughter Ruby has always taken a very hands-on approach to the care and rehabilitation of rescued horses. Rachel and her two daughters, 16 year old Ryley and six year old Ruby volunteer with Save A Horse Australia (SAHA). The organisation was established by Amanda Vella in 2001 and became a fully registered not for profit organisation in 2009. The family have been volunteering for the last six years, with Ruby being literally involved all her life. “She has always shown a keen interest in learning about all the horse’s names, health problems and especially their stories,” said Rachel. “She seems to be able to connect to the horses by just showing kindness, love and gentle hands, which is something many rescue horses have not had. “Recently when she was looking at horse photos on Facebook with me and we came across a photo of a very skinny horse with ribs showing, she asked if Save A Horse Australia could save that horse and make its tummy big. I explained that at the moment the rescue was full and couldn’t fit in anymore sick horses because they didn’t quite have enough money. “She immediately went to her money box and got all her coins out and said “Mummy will this be enough?” and that’s what started her fundraising for the horses.” As part of the charity’s annual fundraiser event, Horses Birthday Party, held every August, Ruby set the goal of raising $500, starting with the money from her money box - $5.75. From humble beginnings, big things grow; at the time of printing, Ruby has over $300 pledged on her fundraising page. The goal of $500 will easily be reached with a fundraising party for family and friends to be held at the end of July. SAHA depend entirely on donations and are grateful for the support they receive, not only from individuals but from businesses. Donations for Ruby’s fundraising efforts can be made at Horseland Jindalee at Jindalee Homemaker Centre, where receipts can be issued for tax deduction purposes. Donations can also be made online by going to www.saveahorse.giveeasy.org/campaigns/rubysrescue-dream/. Forest Lake Lions Club update by Kim Grierson

Homeless Connect Program The Lions Club of Forest Lake demonstrated their support to the recent Brisbane City Council Homeless Connect Program by delivering $300 worth of non-perishable groceries and toiletries to Councillor Milton Dick’s Richlands Ward Office. The Homeless Connect Program assists those in the community who are homeless or at risk of living on the streets. The annual event, which will be held on Wednesday May 20, at the Brisbane Racing Club at Eagle Farm also provides a safe place for the less fortunate to receive a hot meal, have access to free medical check-ups, hair-cuts and more.

Mother’s Day at the Lodge It is always a pleasure for the members of the Forest Lake Lions Club to visit the Forest Lake Lodge on such an important day as Mother’s Day. Residents’ Stella and Jean were very appreciative of the Club’s visit. A small Mother’s day gift was given to all the female residents as well as fruit baskets to share. It is nice to be able to have a chat with the residents and also spread a bit of cheer. The Lions Club of Forest Lake have visited the residents on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas Day for many years.

The heartbreaking result of an arson attack last year at the Wasps clubhouse. This time last year, the outlook for the Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club (Wasps) was not bright, with a serious arson attack on their clubhouse. Now the case has come before the courts and justice has been served. On Thursday 30th April, the three people charged with arson of the Forest Lake District Sporting Facility were found guilty. Two have had convictions recorded and received two year jail terms. The third, who has shown restitution to the club, received a three year good behaviour bond. “We are grateful that this case has been completed. We also hope that this serves as a life-changing moment for these three young men, President Richard Grimshaw said. Causing thousands of dollars in damage, the attack led to increased security measures, including a state of the art camera system and securing of the breezeway, which also put added strain on the club’s finances. On the positive side, the attack saw the local community, including politicians, businesses, sporting groups and the general public rally around the club to support them in their hour of need. “While our finances are still hurting, in terms of membership we are even stronger than before, Richard said. “Lots of junior sporting clubs are finding it harder this season, yet we are one of the few to field full teams in a range of age groups. Our U6s & 7s in particular have drawn such high numbers there is a strong reserve list into the future. So far in Season 2015, the Wasps have come out fighting, letting some impressive results do the talking. The U7s made a virtual clean sweep of their first outing at an Ipswich carnival; the U11s recently boasted a 40-nil scorecard and two U16 players, Jacob Andrews and Duane Asoau, were selected to represent MetWest in the State Carnival in Townsville this month. The Club is seeking to raise funds to assist their U16 boys with the $805 cost per player, so that they can take up this fantastic opportunity. If you would like to help the Wasps, please contact Richard Grimshaw on 0407 790 497. Raffle tickets are also being sold in the local community.

From humble beginnings, the Metro Football Club is now celebrating its 20th season The Metro Football Club, now in it’s 20th season, began when a group of fathers from Forest Lake and surrounds were watching their sons play and thought it might be fun to have a game themselves. From humble beginnings to a comp that now boasts two divisions of 16 teams, the games started on what is now the Lions carpark and part of the Centenary Highway exit and train line. “In the early days, we only had a few members who had played before and it was not uncommon for us, against the better teams, to have a 9-1 score line, in their favour,” said team member Greg Clayton. “We were happy to have scored, but it’s was a hard way to earn a beer.” The team lineup has changed as members have come and gone with David Sharp the only member of the original team still playing. “We are a very culturally diverse group with Irish, Scottish, English, Dutch, Asian and Australian players having played for us over the years. We have transformed from those early days and have played in Grand Finals in five of the last six seasons, taking out the title four years in a row. “Our new sponsors, Punjab Curry Club in Forest Lake, have enabled us to purchase a much needed new kit, for which we are very thankful,” said Greg. The winning team also had over half their players participating in last years Pan Pacific games, where they won the silver medal in the over 50s competition. Although Metro FC have a full squad for this season, people interested in playing for the 2016 season are welcome to call John White on 0406 429 974.

Another Federal Budget has come and gone. The measures announced, still, of course, to be passed by the Senate, are too many to deal with here so let’s look purely at some of the ones which will apply to small business. With effect from Budget night until 30 June 2017, businesses with an annual aggregated group turnover of less than $2 million will be able to immediately deduct an unlimited number of capital purchases, including vehicles, of less than $20,000. Given that such items were previously subject to pooled depreciation of 15% in the first year and 30% thereafter, this is a considerable boost and effectively means a cashflow injection from a tax reduction much quicker than before. However, as always, only purchase what was definitely needed for the business as the ATO only reimburses 30% of the cost, a little less from 1 July 2015 as noted below. Of course, from 1 July 2015 the much lauded corporate tax cut also applies to incorporated small business. Instead of paying tax at 30% of taxable income the rate will reduce to 28.5%, representing a saving of $1,500 per $100,000 of income. Not exactly huge but every little bit helps and presumably a step in the right direction to assist small business. In order to ensure an element of the elusive ‘level playing field’ tax breaks will also apply to non-incorporated businesses. Many small businesses carry on operations as a sole trader whereby income is subject to the marginal income tax system. The 201516 financial year will see such business operators being able to claim a discount of 5% on the tax that is attributed to their business operations but limited to a maximum of $1,000 benefit each year. To some extent this heralds a somewhat diminished return of the previous Entrepreneur’s Tax Offset which ceased after the 2011-12 due to it being considered too complex for anyone to understand! Remember, the above are the announced measures. They still have to pass the Senate and become enshrined in legislation.

Hummingbird House soon to be a reality

For Forest Lake mum, Rebecca Bell-Fuller, it was an innocent question from her son that ignited her desire for fitness with a purpose. “I had not even thought about my health or fitness until my son said to me one day, “Mummy, why do I have to go to kids fitness and you don’t?”. He wasn’t being rude to me, he had a genuine question and wanted to know why I always made sure he was active but I did nothing active myself,” said Rebecca. “In that moment I made the decision to become a fit and healthy mother who showed my children how to make the most out of life instead of just telling them.” Setting her sights on running the Gold Coast Marathon, Rebecca then resolved to support Hummingbird House at the same time. “I wanted a reason to get up on those cold or rainy mornings, a reason that gave this journey a purpose, so I decided to help a charity and without hesitation knew it would be Hummingbird House.” Set for completion before Christmas this year, Hummingbird House, Queensland’s only children’s hospice, will operate as an eight bed, 24/7 medical facility, providing physician and nursing support and pain and symptom management. It will offer scheduled family breaks and emergency respite care as key features of the services. While pregnant with her daughter a few years earlier, scans had indicated that Rebecca’s baby had a serious brain abnormality. The relief Rebecca felt when told shortly after the birth that her daughter was perfectly fine, fuels her desire to give to Hummingbird House. “I want to help build Hummingbird House to help all those families who didn’t get the miracle I did. I knew that the journey to run a marathon would be easy compared to the journey these families have to take. I joined my local running club for motivation and camaraderie and dedicated myself to training. Word quickly spread through the running community about my plan to Run for Hummingbird House and I was overwhelmed by the amazing support not only for me but for Hummingbird House.” Since then, the ranks of runners committed to Run for Hummingbird House has swelled to over 300 team members who compete in a variety of running events around South East Queensland raising awareness and much needed funds to help build Hummingbird House. With Gold Coast Airport Marathon (GCAM) rapidly approaching in July, Run for Hummingbird House has welcomed runners from all locations, all levels of fitness and all ages and now has a team of more than 200 runners set to pound the Gold Coast streets. As well as the GCAM, this year Team Hummingbird is taking marathon running international with ‘Flight of the Hummingbirds’, a follow up marathon on December 13 in the beautiful Honolulu Marathon. If you would like to join Team Hummingbird at either the Gold Coast Marathon or Honolulu Marathon, or can offer sponsorship for the Honolulu Marathon, please contact Rebecca by calling 0402 885 054 or send an email to rbell.fuller@gmail.com.

Fort Lytton at the mouth of the Brisbane River was the destination for this month’s Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club outing. Our coach set off on a typically glorious Brisbane May morning with 53 members on board. Our tour guides greeted us on our arrival at the old Fort where we were treated to a morning tea. A very interesting talk followed on the history of Fort Lytton that included a description of the early defences of Brisbane and Moreton Bay. Afterwards, our guides led us over to the area where the cannons, ammunition rooms and the control room for the mines and boom gates that were laid in the river, in the defence of Brisbane during World War II. Our free time allowed us to explore the museum that contained some very interesting exhibits from the period. With the tour complete, it was time to board our coach and make our way over to the Wynnum RSL, where we enjoyed a two-course meal, a few drinks and some of our members even managed to put some extra cash into their pockets from the Pokies. After lunch it was time to make our way back to Forest Lake where we all had time to reflect on how Brisbane was defended during the period from the late 1800’s through to the end of WWII. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands, 10.30am sign in for a 11.00am start. New members are always welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618, or email fl50plusc@gmail.com. Date claimers for the next three meetings are June 19th, July 17th, August 21st.

Hello Readers Assisting young people to find their purpose in life is probably one of the most rewarding aspects of being a teacher so it was with great pleasure that St John’s teachers and students welcomed back Old Collegians to the Annual Old Collegians Awards breakfast at St Lucia Golf Club this month. The Awards, which mirror the personal qualities we expect of our graduates, are now in their fifth year. Each year the number of nominations has increased and the committee’s work gets harder! This year the Award for Academic Excellence which recognises academic performance, research and leadership in the academic community, was made to Dr Charles Armitage (2003). Charles has completed his PhD at QUT the field of immunology and cell biology specifically investigating the role of antibodies in transporting infection and vaccine development, and frequently speaks at national and international conferences.

A place for TOMORROW’S LEADERS St John’s proudly acknowledges Old Collegian’s Awards recipients for 2015.

For more information email jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au or phone 07 3372 0176

The Award for Excellence in the Workplace which recognises the significant contribution and success in a chosen industry or profession was made to Sarah Forsythe – Timmerman (2003). Sarah launched an online business Beginning Boutique in 2008 and has one million followers on Facebook and Instagram. She was awarded the number One Australian Social Media Brand outlet, by having the best social media engagement in Australia and the 2014 Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Retail. The award for Outstanding Service to the Community recognises a significant contribution to the local, national or international community was presented to Daniel Huynh (2008). Daniel is a senior account at Becis Chartered Accountants who fosters a positive, optimistic and empowering community around him. He raises funds for many charities gaining sponsorship for physical challenges which include 2 day Cycling events, Tough Mudder, sponsoring a Vietnamese orphanage and hosting community events. The top Award for this year, the Head of College Old Collegian of the Year was made to Hannah Joye (2013). Aside from Hannah’s outstanding contribution in the world sporting arena and a rigorous training schedule, Hannah has not neglected her university, local church, charities, our College or her friends. Family Focus

Brisbane West

COUNSELLING

with Mark Mackay

It’s always easier to talk about issues that are comfortable and that aren’t going to upset people. But, I think it comes as a responsibility when one writes a column called, Family Focus that I address one of the most serious issues facing families today – domestic violence. Domestic violence is vile and evil. However, many families are caught behind a false veil of privacy. One of the most prominent social maxims in our culture is, ‘what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors.’ Whether because of threats, disempowerment, embarrassment, or other reasons, we are left with the disturbing estimate by the Australian Bureau of Statistics that 60% of domestic violence cases go unreported. What is even more disturbing is that one recent report says, “domestic violence easily exceeded street crime as the fastest growing form of assault.â€? These statistics make for uncomfortable reading but we need to see them because it is estimated that one in three Australian women over the age of 15 have experienced physical or sexual violence at some time in their lives. Additionally, one in three victims of domestic violence are men. Can there really be any doubt that domestic violence is something that must be a matter to families? The first important thing we can do to address this epidemic is acknowledge it. Let’s bring it out of the dark and show people that we want to address it. One of the great commands of the Bible is to “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.â€? (Isaiah 1:17) Our Church motto is ‘Every person is important to God.’ Domestic violence and abuse disempowers, devalues and destroys people. Our desire is to do the opposite – to empower, value and build up people. What are some practical steps you can take? • If you are experiencing domestic abuse, know this: you do not need to accept it! You can go to the Police and get help. Also, have a look at the White Ribbon website at www. whiteribbon.org.au to find a list of organisations that can help; • If you are an abuser, know this: You need to stop! You need to get some help. Go to the White Ribbon website to find out what is available; • If you know someone who is being abused or suspect it may be happening, or just want to know more, go to the White Ribbon website for information. Domestic abuse is a complex issue that needs to be addressed both by governments and by communities. Domestic abuse is an issue we can all do something about. Let’s decide as a community “Family violence – Australia says NO!â€?

FROM THE DESK OF

Annastacia Palaszczuk MPP STATE MEMBER FOR INAL A

Queensland Day Volunteer Awards will be held on June 6 at the Lions Soccer Club. The South West Progress Association have received a record number of nominations this year. This is the 7th year that Cr. Milton Dick and I have partnered with South West Progress Association. It is wonderful to hear inspiring stories of locals who contribute their own time and effort, volunteering through different community projects and initiatives across the entire Inala electorate. Many of the nominees come from Forest Lake; a strong reminder of the wonderful spirit that our Forest Lake Community possesses. It is always a great pleasure to honour the volunteers who selflessly contribute to the community, as we thank the generosity of these committed volunteers who work, not for acclaim of applause but simply out of the goodness of their hearts. I hope that all members of the Forest Lake community celebrate Queensland Day in their own way, a day that commemorates the anniversary of Queensland becoming a state. I want to congratulate the Forest Lake Lions Club on their ‘Walk with the Lions’ Charity Walk held on May 17 at the Lake. This important annual event gives the community the opportunity to come together and support their local Lions Club in a good cause. The ‘Heart Foundation’ was the beneficiary of many thousands of dollars raised this year. I am always impressed with the way residents, businesses and community groups support this annual event. If you have any queries about the Forest Lake area, please feel free to contact my office on 3372 3207.

Algester Update Hi! Since we last spoke it’s been very busy. Parliament has resumed and I have been out and about in the electorate discussing what’s important for people in our community. In my last column I mentioned that I attended Parliament to meet with four students from St John’s Anglican College. I regret to say that after going to print the students were not able to attend Parliament. I value the opportunity with talk to young people in Algester. With the support of staff at St John’s Anglican College I was able to go and visit the year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students. When we got together I was able to share my experiences as a member of parliament and share my insight into the different paths to politics. I was thrilled to speak with many enthusiastic young people about our democratic process. In May I met with a number of community organisations and celebrated Mother’s Day with the community and my own children. On Saturday I shared a delicious high tea to celebrate Mother’s Day at St John’s Anglican College, which was prepared by students. It was lovely to talk to families on Mother’s Day and come together as a community at the Markets on Grand which are held on the second Sunday of the month at Grand Avenue State School. Once again we saw fantastic stalls, products and services for sale. I recently hosted a morning tea at my office for our local police where we talked about the importance of working together to serve our community. I want to once again take the opportunity to thank all the men and women of the Police Service who served our community after that heavy rain on the 1st of May. From May 27 to June 3 is National Reconciliation Week. There are a number of events across the community which I have attended. On Friday 29 May I joined with local Aboriginal Elders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and the school community at Forest Lake State High School to pay our respects and reflect on Reconciliation Week. I enjoyed talking to those young people about my life experiences and reflecting on the challenges and obstacles that life can throw at you. I really want to hear the views of local people. If you have any questions, concerns or just wanted to have a yarn call me on 3737 2110 or send an email to algester@parliament.qld.gov.au.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Carolyn Nottingham Twenty- five members attended the Mount Warren game on 3rd May. The course was a challenge, water two days before had inundated the course leaving it very muddy and soggy if you ventured off the fairways. The greens were difficult to read and pin placement was not kind to the players. Once again the water claimed a lot of the players balls. The format for this game was a Stroke event, with congratulations going to all winners on the day – A Grade Winner Greg Robson Net 70 and runner-up Colin Brooke with 71 Net ; B grade was won by Jason Lee 66 Net and runner-up Alan Corless with 69 Net; C Grade was won by Danny Dvornicich 73 Net, and runner-up Brendan Clarke with 74. Longest Drive exponents were Alan Corless- A Grade; Atul Bhardwaj - B Grade and Brendan Clarke - C Grade. The Nearest the Pin sharp shooters were Bob Brose at the 16th hole and Gil Vargas at the 9th hole. Greg Robson won the nearest approach at the 18th, prize kindly donated by Brimik Cleaning. The clubs next game will be held at Oxley Golf Club on the 14th June with a 6.21am tee time. For anyone who is interested in joining our club, please contact Cory (Secretary) on 0407 339 794; or like ‘Forest Lake Social Golf Club’ on our Facebook Page and register your interest there. Garden Group

by John Prout The first month of winter is upon us, time to put the electric blanket on the bed, buy wood for the fireplace or just snuggle up under a warm blanket. Did you know that the month of June was named after Juno, the Roman Goddess of Marriage? Maybe this is why many women like to be June brides. Meeting venue change: With the success of changing our meetings to the morning, we have outgrown the room at the Community Life Centre. Effective from 7 July, our meetings will be held at The Dutch Club, 123 Pine Road, Richlands (opposite the main entry to Masters). There is no street parking, however, there is plenty of parking inside the complex. Please let me know if you have any queries. Another busy month has passed as 41 members enjoyed morning tea at Crossacres Garden Centre (our sponsor) and the drawing of the Name the Raptor competition. The two lucky winners who each received a $25 voucher from Crossacres were Angela Naumann and Warren Ricketts who named the raptor Plantasaurus and Gardenasaurus respectively. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to Col Kath for donating the vouchers. Our second outing was an open garden visit to Robyn and Alex’s home in Drewvale. Under a cloudy sky, we were able to explore their fine manicured garden consisting of a wide assortment of plants and catch up for a chat with fellow members. If you are growing tomatoes during the cooler months, it is best to grow the smaller varieties. Cherry and Grape varieties would have to be the most popular of the smaller tomatoes. If you want to be adventurous why not try the sungold (yellow) or the black cherry (a deep purplish). As you know, tomatoes are officially a fruit and wisdom is knowing not to put them in a fruit salad. Winter brings shorter days giving us less time to spend outdoors however there is still plenty to do in the garden. Although growth in the garden slows down in these cooler months, there are still plenty of tasks to complete. • Prune hydrangeas and take cuttings to grow new plants. Only cut back those stems that flowered last season. • Reduce watering of indoor plants in winter. • Plant hippeastrum bulbs with the top of the bulb protruding from the soil. Our Nursery, Wine & Lavender bus tour on Wednesday 17 June is full however there is awaiting list if you would like to come. I’m looking forward to the Great Aussie Roast for lunch at the Kooroomba Vineyard. For further details contact Jill (phone 3372 6800) or Heather (phone 3879 2129). Remember the new venue, from July, is The Dutch Club, 123 Pine Road, Richlands. I hope to share a cuppa with you there.

From the desk of Angela Owen-Taylor Parkinson Ward Councillor On 7th June the Parkinson Ward Multicultural and Dragonboat Festival will once again be held at the Lake from 10am to 2pm and I encourage residents to come and enjoy the festivities. The Rotary Club of Forest Lake will also be hosting a Citzenship Ceremony from 9am – 10am. Festivals such as this promote greater understanding of many different cultures and serve to enhance harmony in our community and in our city. Many residents will have noticed the weed harvester back in the Lake in early May removing tonnes of weed. This program of ongoing maintenance funded in the annual Council budget continues to improve the state of the Lake. Thank you to all of the residents who have reported personal trainers using the Amphitheatre for training activities without approval or a permit. As I stated on ANZAC Day, the Amphitheatre is a place of respect and should be treated appropriately. I have recently co-ordinated with Council staff to have signage erected confirming that personal training activities are not permitted in the Amphitheatre. I appreciate local residents who take an interest in our local community and want to see this area, which is special to our community, kept in the best condition possible. Congratulations to Forest Lake Lions and the Leos for hosting Walk with the Lions to raise funds for the National Heart Foundation. It was a pleasure to join you for the walk around the Lake Parklands. I would also like to extend my thanks to the St John’s College students who tended to many of our local ladies for the Mother’s Day High Tea; it was a wonderful event once again and you do our community proud. I would like to remind residents of the upcoming kerbside cleanup for our local suburbs which is scheduled for pickup as follows; • Pallara and Heathwood during the week commencing 8 June, • Forest Lake during the week commencing 15 June, • Doolandella during the week commencing 22 June. All large items are only to be placed on the kerbside over the weekend prior to collection commencing. For information on what items are able to be placed on the footpath please log on to the Brisbane City Council website www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/environment-waste/rubbish-tips-and-bins/rubbish-collections/kerbside-collection/ acceptable-items/index.htm.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach

It was an early morning start to hail public transport to enable Probians to be punctual to board the Miramar II at the Cultural Centre Pontoon. We were taking a cruise on the Brisbane River to Lone Pine, the world’s largest Koala Sanctuary. The Miramar II is an ultra modern cruise boat with a licensed bar, tea and coffee facilities including refreshments. Soon after arrival we were served a delicious Devonshire tea. Our Captain and guide delivered a running commentary as we passed notable places of interest, including pointing out some magnificent historic homes as well as modern mansions. Probians did not disembark at Lone Pine but all the tourists did. We chose an amble through the Arboretum. Having worked up an appetite, we thoroughly enjoyed the scrumptious lunch which was roast pork with apple crumble and ice-cream. It brought back some childhood memories for some seniors. The weather was a perfect Queensland day and even all the tourists on board complimented us on our friendliness, weather and beautiful city. The May speaker was Bryan Nicholson, Community & Relationship Officer for the Brisbane Airport Corporation. His topic was the new Parallel Runway Project at Brisbane Airport. The new runway has been on the master plan drawing board for three decades but fortunately civil works commenced in 2012. As so much land had to be drained and sand pumped, the dredge Charles Darwin, one of the biggest dredges in the world, was used. At all times, throughout the entire operation environmental issues had to be taken in account. Two hundred and eighty five hectares has been set aside for wildlife and the environment. Even a Sea Eagle nest had to be relocated and the birds found their new nest. China has 183 civil airports and by 2020 will have a further 97 to help cope with the increase in air cargo and passenger travel. Brisbane cannot afford to be left behind. It is estimated there will be one hundred million more passengers travelling annually! Beryl passed the vote of thanks and in her delivery mentioned she used to work at the old airport in her youth. Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor arrived for a fleeting visit to hand out Certificates of Appreciation to Joan, Jim, Chris, Kevin and Marge for their assistance at the Australian Citizenship Ceremony last year under trying heatwave conditions with no air conditioning. The Probus Club was presented with ‘The Spirit of Brisbane’ plaque as evidence for their contribution to the Forest Lake community. Retirees and semi-retirees come and join us for fun, friendship and frolic on the second Tuesday of the month at 10 am at the Forest Lake Hotel. Please call Shirley on 3879 9421 or Joan on 3372 9923 that you will be attending. Come, try and see! The Lake La News - June 2015 - Pa Page age 27
