What an interesting start it was to the New Year. The January speaker was Geoff Crane, Meteorologist extraordinaire and his topic was “Tsunami”. For the past five and a half years, Geoff has been the leader of an international team working within UNESCO to set up a Tsunami Warning System for countries around the Indian Ocean. The word tsunami means ‘harbour waves’ and is attributed to Japan where these waves were believed to occur only in a harbour. Teutonic plates under the sea are mostly found in and around Japan and when an undersea earthquake erupts, the tsunami waves are created. All other waves are surface waves which are created from the top of the sea. Teutonic plates shown of the earth’s crust indicate that Australia is not at high risk, but even so it is still necessary to inform the public even when not threatened. The Richter Scale goes up to six point five but a tsunami could commence at eight. The Hoku tsunami was a complex rupture of five hundred kilometres long and one hundred and eighty kilometres wide of surface displacement. Calculating the travelling time of a tsunami is essential to enable sufficient warning to be released for those in its destructive path. The time elapsed, earthquake magnitude and rupture has to be completed before final magnitude and surface waves are beamed around the earth. The speaker showed his audience photos as well as explanatory diagrams of tsunamis and their step by step development. The speed of a tsunami is comparable to that of a jet aircraft! Information sharing is vital and occurs through the various UN Agencies. Taking responsibility for the initial notification of trouble looming and all monitoring is an area that needs more clarification and upgrading. Probians now have some miniscule knowledge of the development of a tsunami but are actively aware of the important role played by Australian Geoscientists including taking on a leadership role. It was a fascinating topic delivered in bite-size units for members to comprehend and enjoy. Probus is a club for both male and female retirees or semi-retirees who are still young at heart and want to enjoy fun, friendship and stay young. Interesting activities and trips are planned for this year so why not join us? Details page 27 of this publication.

Retirement - everybody’s doing it - but Probus does it better.

Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

As we head into autumn 2014, we will hopefully begin to enjoy some cooler weather, after, what has felt like to me, a very hot summer. I always enjoy it when there is that hint of change in the air. Come to think of it, I just like change generally! Which is why I am excited about some of the changes we have made recently, here at Local News Publications. You will notice that this edition of The Lake News is on full gloss paper, as opposed to the matte paper it was previously printed on. Our publications have seen a few different printing processes over the last 20 years and we are pleased to now move to gloss paper. Printing on full gloss paper gives a sharpness and cleaner look to advertisements, photos and text, as well as a depth of colour that can’t be achieved on the previous paper. We know it also improves the overall look of our publications, which is something we are constantly striving for and looking to improve. It’s a fine balance between ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ and wanting to give our readers and advertisers the very best we can offer. With that in mind, the other change we have made is the decision for our publications to be delivered to homes over a weekend, rather than mid week. As you would know, there are rather a lot of catalogues and other material that fight for space in your letterbox during the week. Changing to a weekend delivery, where fewer items are delivered, will increase the effectiveness of the delivery and give our publications greater prominence. Please keep in mind that whilst we have changed delivery companies, the same rules apply - houses with ‘no junk mail’ stickers will not be delivered to, as well as houses that have an obscured letterbox or houses on acreage blocks. If none of these apply to your house, and you or someone you know does not receive The Lake News, please do let us know. We pay for full coverage and are happy to pass on any non-delivery issues to the delivery company. To make our publications accessible to those who have ‘no junk mail’ stickers, or have moved from the area but still maintain an interest in the community, our online versions are able to be viewed from your desktop computer, your tablet or smartphone. We know that many of you do read The Lake News online, so I wanted to remind you that any email address or website is a direct link. This means you can simply and quickly access any of the advertisers or community groups with one click. You will be taken straight to their website where you can lodge an enquiry or else be taken to your email application where you can send off an email. Living in this technological age really is fun and exciting! It gives us all so many more ways to connect. As always, we value and appreciate your feedback and welcome any comments, either on the new look or the delivery. And in the meantime, enjoy the cooler days and nights by getting involved with a community group or simply utilise one of our many great parks and the Lake. We live in a fantastic area - let’s make the most of it!

There is a lot of research at the moment about how good oral health and general body health are closely related. There is an oral – systemic connection that shows periodontal disease is a risk factor for heart disease. The reason this occurs appears to be inflammation. Chronic inflammation, which is part of periodontal disease, has been claimed to be a major cause of diseases like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, kidney diseases, colon cancer, stroke, blood vessel damage, and complications in pregnancy. One of the most common causes of inflammation in the entire body is gum disease or periodontal disease. It is normally completely painless and often causes no symptoms at all. It can persist for many years before problems can be seen but careful examination, simple tests and x-rays show its presence. Treatment is relatively easy and certainly the sooner it is picked up the easier the treatment involved becomes. A regular trip to the dentist and hygienist can ensure further problems are held in check. Medical research is currently studying how the bacteria from periodontal disease cause chronic inflammation and how chronic inflammation can lead to many other health problems. We all hear stories of people who dropped dead of a heart attack but who didn’t have high cholesterol or didn’t have any risk factors at all. One of the hidden risk factors appears to be chronic inflammation. The most common cause of chronic inflammation is periodontal disease. Recent research is also showing TMJ dysfunction may also be a cause of chronic inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the body’s natural reaction to some type of insult like trauma or infection. It can occur in a local or acute manner and a general or systemic manner. The general/systemic type appears to be the big problem. Blood tests can show the presence of inflammatory proteins in the body. Then finding the cause of the chronic inflammation is the hard part. Many doctors are now turning to dentists to help this fight against chronic inflammation. Prescriptions for periodontal treatment could soon be coming from your doctor as well as your dentist. If you are interested in finding more about this connection between medicine and dentistry please give the friendly team at Lakedental a call on 3879 8999.

MTR Property Group Shine at the REIQ Annual Gala Event

On Friday February 7th, MTR Property Group celebrated their second consecutive year as finalists in the REIQ Excellence Awards, Small Residential Agency category. The only Forest Lake Real Estate agency to ever have achieved such recognition. The annual REIQ Awards for Excellence is the most prestigious event on the industry’s calendar, recognising outstanding achievement and commitment to integrity in the profession. The gala event was held at the newly refurbished Brisbane City Hall. Around 500 guests including the Queensland Premier and the Attorney-General attended. “Every year, our awards grow in stature and importance as agents and agencies seek to differentiate themselves in a competitive marketplace,” REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said. When asked how the MTR team felt about MTR being recognised by the REIQ as finalists, Marilyn Thurtell, Principal of MTR said, “We have grown as a team and have learnt a lot. The Real Estate industry can be very tough going at times, however with the love of family and friends and a strong team network all things are possible. “We are a strong committed team and are honoured and grateful to be selected as finalists amongst such a small elite group of incredible and successful Queensland agencies.”

MTR PROPERTY GROUP Page 6 - March 2014 - The Lake News

When asked to reflect on 2013 Marilyn said, “Looking back, it was an amazing year for MTR. We saw a welcome uplift in the Forest Lake property market which led to us finishing the year in Number One position for sales in Forest Lake for the final quarter. Demonstrating the strength of our small dedicated team. “MTR began Property Management with Courtney steadily building the portfolio and offering Landlords a personalised service which aligns with the commitment and professionalism our clients have come to expect from the MTR Sales Team. “The next awards process will commence later in the year. This takes around six months with hundreds of entries being received by the REIQ for each category. “MTR is regularly reviewing and implementing initiatives to ensure we continue to offer the people of Forest Lake a Real Estate experience that is unrivalled.” Like MTR on Facebook during the month of March and go into the draw for a $100 gift voucher.

Where are all the angels? More than 80% of people with a rare genetic condition could be missing out on vital support because of a lack of diagnosis. The Angelman Syndrome Association of Australia launched a nationwide campaign to find Australia’s 1,000 “missing” members of its Angelman family to mark International Angelman Day last month. The incidence of Angelman syndrome is about one in 20,000. Australia’s population is 23 million, so where are they? People with the condition typically have high support needs, some mobility limitations, complex communication needs with no verbal language, severe sleep disorder and often intractable epilepsy. There is usually a chromosome 15 deletion, however the genetics of the condition are quite complex. Lysandra Warren, Vice President of Angelman Syndrome Association Australia (QLD), whose nine year old son Joel has Angelman Syndrome said,“Our paediatricians and geneticists are now recognizing the syndrome at a much earlier age with chromosome testing becoming more available with advances in technology.” The condition is characterised by laughter, energetic movement, hugs and a fascination with water. Angelman Syndrome was not even recognised as a separate condition until 1965 when it was first described by British paediatrician Dr. Harry Angelman. Mary Bills, spokesperson for the Association, believes that many cases, especially older individuals, have been missed by health professionals and labelled “special needs”, “on the autism spectrum” or “cerebral palsy”. “We estimate that there are more than 1,000 people in Australia with Angelman Syndrome, but fewer than 200 are registered. “There may also be families with a correct diagnosis who simply aren’t aware of the Association and of the Angelman Syndrome clinics now accessible in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria. For most families, the diagnosis will have been a bolt out of the blue and will have had life-changing consequences. As the condition is rare, a sense of isolation is all too frequent. We want to find these families and bring them into our Angelman family.” The Angelman Syndrome Association holds a conference every two years where families can come together to learn about recent advances in research throughout the world, and to share experiences and gain specific knowledge about current topics of interest. The Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics is an organisation dedicated to raising funds to support research on Angelman Syndrome in Australia and overseas. Information about Angelman Syndrome is available at www.angelmansyndrome.org.

Sun exposure in pets can lead to chronic sunburn and solar dermatitis. Like us, white-skinned pets are more at risk. In cats, the ears, nose and lower eyelids are the most commonly affected areas. In dogs, thinly haired pale skin between the legs is more vulnerable. In the early stages, the skin may look pink and scaly with some degree of hair loss, but as the condition progresses, the area becomes crusted and eroded. If left untreated, some cases progress and a malignant tumour called Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) can develop. SCC’s are locally invasive, but do not spread rapidly to other parts of the body. If the ears are affected, the cat may shake its head and cause bleeding. SCC’s on the nose often bleed if the cat rubs its nose or sneezes. Dogs will show raw sores on their skin that do not heal and bleed. How is squamous cell carcinoma treated? If the ears are affected, surgical removal is the best treatment. Usually complete removal of the earflap is necessary, but this has no detrimental effect on the cat and the final appearance is quite acceptable. Early lesions of the nose and eyelids can be successfully treated by surgery or cryosurgery. More advanced lesions may require surgery or a combination of surgery with cryosurgery or radiation therapy. In very advanced cases with nose involvement, removal of the nose is possible as a last resort. SCC’s in dogs can normally be removed completely with a good cosmetic result. The prognosis is usually good if the disease is discovered early, especially when the ears are involved. If all the diseased tissue is not adequately removed, the tumour will reoccur at the operation site. This can be a problem if the nose or eyelids are affected and is the reason why additional therapies are often used in these cases. How can squamous cell carcinoma be prevented? To prevent solar dermatitis in the first place, or to stop it progressing to SCC, exposure to sunlight should be avoided. This is best achieved by keeping susceptible pets indoors between 9.00am and 4.00pm. It is possible to use sunblock creams, but unfortunately pets will rapidly groom or lick this off. Some products may be toxic to cats so check with your vet before you start using a cream. Dogs will adapt to lycra suits but this is not for every pet.

Animal foster carers needed RSPCA Qld is looking for enthusiastic and compassionate people who can provide a safe and loving temporary home for an animal that needs time away from the shelter environment. The team of foster carers at RSPCA Qld dedicate their time to nurturing and loving those animals who need it most. This includes young puppies and kittens too young to be adopted, animals recovering from injuries or illness, dogs or cats that are not coping well in a shelter environment, and animals that are victims of abuse, neglect or abandonment and are awaiting court case outcomes. RSPCA Qld’s State Foster Care Coordinator, Julie Herbert, said one of the most rewarding experiences for foster carers is seeing a previously uncared-for animal enjoying life and learning to trust once again. “For many foster carers, the experience of fostering an abused or neglected animal is tremendously rewarding,” she said. “These animals are in desperate need of human contact and to the special few fostering these animals, the experience can change their lives.” This was the case for foster carers Nicky and Scott, who provided a loving home for gentle giant Bruce, a four-yearold Mastiff-cross, while he waited for adoption. Found as a stray, Bruce was a long-term RSPCA guest – chalking up more than 500 days – most of which were spent at their home, in between popping into the Brisbane Animal Long-term guest of RSPCA Qld, Bruce the four-year-old Care Campus occasionally to try to find a new forever home. Mastiff-cross, was adopted at Christmas by his foster Bruce did not have to look far to find his second chance carers who could not bear to part with him. after all. Just before Christmas his foster carers decided to adopt him. “We finally caved in when we realised that if someone else took him now, we wouldn’t be able to say goodbye,” Nicky said.Nicky and Scott said Bruce was learning to be a foster brother for all the little kittens that the family continues to foster for RSPCA Qld.RSPCA Qld has a range of different animals that need the love and assistance of foster carers. Some animals only need a week or two in foster while others require long-term care. Carers can specify the duration of care they are able to provide. RSPCA Qld provides all food, equipment, veterinary care and training for foster carers. Currently, RSPCA Qld is in greatest need of foster carers who can take large breed dogs and adult cats. Bruce was Nicky and Scott’s first large breed dog. “I have never owned a big dog in my life. The biggest dog we have ever had was a Springer Spaniel, so Bruce was a huge change. And I would happily get a giant breed again. They are gentle (especially with little kids) and so goofy, and everyone wants to meet them when you go for a walk. So he has helped us meet all of our neighbours, and he is great company when I am home alone,” Nicky said. For more information on becoming a foster carer visit www.rscpaqld.org.au or contact RSPCA Qld’s foster care team on 3426 9997 or fostering@rspcaqld.org.au.

Last month I had the great privilege of participating in the induction of Forest Lake State School’s student leadership team for 2014. The ceremony brought together a wonderful community of parents and teachers, as well as students who are keen to learn and exceed. Listening to the well-spoken school captains and house captains only reinforced the fine reputation for academic excellence and friendliness that Forest Lake State School enjoys within the wider community. This is also the only time we will have both Year 6 and 7 school leaders, as all of these students will move to secondary education next year. It was wonderful to speak with P&C President Margie Nightingale and Acting Principal Paul McSwiney, both of whom share a passionate view on effectively educating our youngest members of society. So congratulations to the students who have the honour of representing Forest Lake State School as student leaders in 2014; I look forward to watching you all progress throughout the year.

Running Girl qualifies for Boston Marathon

For Forest Lake local of ten years, Nicole Fels, running has always been a big part of her life. From competing in high school cross country to this year running in the Boston Marathon next month, Nicole is no stranger to training for and reaching her goals. “Over the last three years I have become a lot more dedicated to my running and have trained really consistently to reach my goals,” said Nicole. “Starting the Flakers Running Group (Forest Lake Runners and Walkers) has certainly been a huge motivator for me. “After leaving school, I found my exercise took a backseat, but when my brother bet me I couldn’t run a half marathon, I took him up on it and completed my first Half Marathon in 1995. “I ran on and off over years since then but in 2011 my husband had a heart attack at the age of 39 which came as a great shock. He fully recovered, thankfully, but from that moment I became determined to be the fittest I could be for my family. “I rediscovered my total love of running and then with the consistent training I started to improve greatly. I focused on 5k and 10k events initially but then last year I had an idea to run 42.2k (a full marathon) while I was 42 years old in the hope of qualifying for Boston. I ran the Sunshine Coast Marathon and got the qualifying time I needed and was accepted into the Boston Marathon for this year which is an absolute dream come true. After the events of last year at Boston I think this years will be highly emotional and it will be amazing to see all these runners come together and show that terrorism won’t stop them.” Nicole and members of the Flakers Running Group have a fundraising tin that, for the last two years, has gone towards raising money for the Mater Chicks in Pink organisation. “We actually have about 80 women running at the International Women’s Day Fun Run this month at South Bank, where we will be dressing up in pink tutus to raise awareness for the Mater Chicks in Pink program and we will hand over our fundraising money then.” Nicole has competed in many fun runs in Australia, in particular the Gold Coast Marathon and the Sunshine Coast Marathon as well as regular participation in the free timed 5k Parkruns throughout Brisbane. For anyone interested in joining other runners in Forest Lake, the group leaves Red Rooster every Sunday morning at 6am. Good luck at the Boston Marathon, Nicole! We can’t wait to hear all about this wonderful experience. ~ Editor.

March, the month named after Mars, the Roman God of War, is an excellent month to wage war on your garden. Be it ripping out the weeds, mulching up a storm, or popping in a plethora of plants, March is the ultimate time to launch a full scale (but well planned) attack on your garden! So, all you weekend warriors...March into action! March means bright skies, warm days and, as the month progresses, that hint of autumn in the evening air that makes it the ideal weather for gardening. March is also a big month for lawn care. Feed lawns to encourage maximum growth before winter. A slow release fertilizer, applied now, will see the lawn right through until the colder weather.

Insect pests are on the march in March. They’ve had ample time to build up numbers through the warm weather and there’s a lot of growth around for them to get stuck into. Caterpillars grow ever bigger as they feast on your favourite plants. Buy one of the eco-friendly products to control caterpillars, and also treat smaller sap suckers like aphids and thrips. Tidying and dead-heading will be the main pruning jobs for this month. Prune off sun-damaged sections on hedges and feed to encourage as much new growth as possible before winter. It is said that a ‘gardeners work is never done’ as there is always something one can find to do in their garden. You earned a break from all that work so why not join us on our next bus trip on Wednesday 19 March? It’s a Gold Coast Sea & Garden Escape as we enjoy a two hour cruise around the Gold Coast Broadwater, followed by lunch at one of the restaurants in Jupiter’s Hotel & Casino. In order to ‘work off ’ those extra calories from lunch, the afternoon will be spent exploring the Gold Coast Regional Botanical Gardens. These gardens are another beautiful hidden treasure on the Gold Coast. Due to the cruise, we are limited in the number we can take. If you have not received a flyer phone Heather (3879 2129) or Jill (3372 6800) and one will be mailed to you. In regard to the reports that our meetings may change to a morning time, voting within the club is currently being held at time of writing this report. Watch for further details! At this month’s meeting, the popular Noel Burdette will be our guest speaker and his topic will be Beautiful Productive Plants. Mark this evening in your diary as Noel always draws a good response from members and guests.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us! Next meeting Tuesday March 11th, 2014. Forest Lake Community House, Alpine Place

Residents may have noticed a new structure near the Forest Lake Boulevard/The Esplanade corner of the Lake being installed recently. This new dome like structure is a spillway guard which has been placed over the existing three bellmouth spillways in that location. Following is a more detailed technical explanation which I hope assists residents. The purpose of the spillways is to allow water to pass through and maintain the set water level and it is important that these inlets are kept clear of weed and debris so they can perform their function as designed. The original three guards consist of individual horizontal grates over the bellmouth spillway inlets which can at times become blocked with weed and debris. The new spillway guard is a larger structure which covers all three inlets and is designed so the flow through the spillway is not restricted even when there may be occasions when significant weed may build up outside the guard. The size and shape has been determined from hydraulic modelling and maintenance considerations.

It’s been a busy start to the year, with a significant increase of enquiries coming to my office and I am very happy to be of service and to have delivered on an array of issues for the community. I am delighted that over $600 000 has been allocated to Forest Lake High and Grand Ave State School as part of the Queensland Government’s new education program, Great Results Guarantee. Another example of our commitment to education, the extra funding aims to encourage improved student performance and best results outcomes, and I will update residents with how each school allocates this significant investment in education. In my last column I mentioned that Flashing School lights would be installed along Grand Avenue, well, they’re in and working! I would like to remind drivers to please be aware when travelling around our schools. Local sports clubs like Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union, Lakers Netball and Little Athletics have started their new 2014 season enrolments intake. I am advised there has been a large increase in families taking up the offer of the Get in the Game vouchers from the Queensland Government which is providing up to $150 per child for registration costs, enabling participation for children and young people who can least afford it. Check your eligibility and information at www.nprsr. qld.gov.au/getinthegame. I encourage anyone thinking of joining in sports to consider these dynamic clubs with fantastic facilities and dedicated committees. We are truly fortunate to have them in our area. Other news of note has been the re-establishment of a new Neighbourhood Watch Heathwood. This is the second new or renewed Neighbourhood Watch in my electorate since I was elected and I am proud to support them and other community groups wherever possible. I invite all residents to get out the blanket and chairs, and come along on March 8 to the Heathwood Park to a free Cinema in the Suburbs event that I am proudly sponsoring to support the Pallara P& C and the Heathwood Neighbourhood Watch. Bring the kids and make a night of it, seeing a great movie ‘The Croods’ and support local community groups by purchasing a sausage or a drink from 5pm onward and the movie will begin after dark. Hope to see you there!

Crochet group says thanks for donations

Sue Gibbon and members of the Crochet group would like to thank all those who have donated wool to the group so far this year. “We can’t keep crochetting and making blankets to donate to charity if we don’t have any wool,” said Sue. “So it was wonderful to receive these donations to kickstart 2014. “The generosity in the Forest Lake community is overwhelming. The members of the group and I simply cannot thank enough, those who have contacted me regarding wool donations.” The Crochet group meets weekly on Thursdays at 10.30am at Settlers, High Street, Forest Lake. If you would like to join, or donate some wool, contact Sue on 3279 9561.

Hello Readers There was a great buzz around St John’s as our students eagerly started their school year. We know from experience that students who commit to being involved in all there is to offer, build their confidence, learn how to get along with others, establish positive relationships and do well academically. Such is the case with our 2013 graduates who have received the highest ever academic results in the history of the College. The achievement of 6, OP1’s from a cohort of 88 eligible students is not only the highest number in the history of the College but a very credible percentage and favourably compares with Queensland’s best schools. Having 59 students in the OP 1-10 band is very pleasing and due largely to the commitment of the individuals involved and the whole year level working together to support one another in the goal of producing their very best outcome. 89% of our students were in the OP 1-15 band, a statistic which has been rising every year and places St John’s favourably in the rankings. The Core Skills Test scores were very credible and is a testimony to the hard work applied by the students and the encouragement and challenge provided by our very talented teachers. Recently our College community welcomed back our graduates of 2013 who received an OP 1-5 and invited them to sign the Scholar’s Book which records their fine achievement in the Archives of College. Some students opted to study the Business Certificate Three Course as part of their senior studies course through our partnership with AXIOM College, which guaranteed those students the equivalent of an OP 15 upon completion. Over the years as we have developed our Senior Pathways program which has provided a strengthening of post school outcomes for St John’s graduates with future study and employment options for our young people in the courses of their choice being assured.

A place for TOMORROW’S LEADERS St John’s Anglican College offers families in south west Brisbane coeducation from Kindergarten to Year Twelve. Forming young hearts and minds St John’s offers personalised learning for exceptional achievement. Shaped by Christian values in the Anglican tradition as they guide everyday College life, St John’s graduates are well educated, respectful, resilient and compassionate; equipped to be people of influence in their communities.

Local connection with blockbuster movie

Forest Lake resident and author, Brian Robertson was surprised to learn of the close connection his biographical tale of his late friend, David Barrett, had with the blockbuster film, The Railway Man, starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth. “Imagine my surprise after seeing the film - I had no idea,” said Brian Robertson, co-author of Digger’s Story. “I know a lot about Nagase Takashi from my late friend David Barrett.” Digger’s Story, co-written by David Barrett and Brian Robertson (pictured), describes in detail Mr. Barrett’s connection and eventual friendship with Nagase Takashi, the alleged torturer in the film The Railway Man. Digger’s Story describes the reaction and behaviour of Nagase Takashi during September and October of 1945 immediately after the Japanese surrender in August of that year. David Barrett and Nagase Takashi were members of the Allied War Graves Commission charged with locating and logging the positions of the bodies of the allied soldiers who died on the infamous Thai/Burma railway. Mr. Barrett was charged with “looking after” Takashi by the allied officers in charge of the War Graves Commission project. The officers wanted little to do with him because he was a despised Kempeitai officer. The Kempeitai were the Co-authors, David ‘Digger’ Barrett, now deceased, dreaded Imperial Japanese Army police. (Similar in function and Brian Robertson (right). to the Gestapo in the German army.) “When writing Diggers Story, David described in detail how Nagase confessed to him that he was very worried about being arrested for war crimes. He never admitted to having tortured anyone but said that he was there only as an interpreter,” said Mr. Robertson. “David always had his doubts about the truth of this. Nagase and David had long conversations about the attitude of the Japanese to the war and why the Japanese treated their prisoners as they did. David believed that these talks helped engender in Nagase a realisation that what the Japanese Imperial Army did to their prisoners was very wrong.” In 1986 David Barrett became the founder of the Australian Ex—POW Reparations Committee, and was again in contact with Takashi for several years, who by this time was devoting his life and considerable resources trying to make amends for Japan’s war crimes. David and Nagase had a long and mutually supportive friendship over many years until Nagase’s death in 2011. The Railway Man has uncovered an amazing part of wartime history. And you’ll find that Digger’s Story - Surviving the Japanese POW camps was just the beginning, will provide much more detail on the life of Nagase Takashi. The book is available on Amazon, and through all local bookstores.

Family Focus with Mark Mackay

Mark Mackay is the Baptist pastor at Forest Lake and teaches at Malyon College. About 10 years ago, my wife and I travelled to Scotland with my parents. One of my Dad’s goals had been to see the town from which our family had come to Australia – Tongue on Scotland’s north coast. So, we drove the seven hours from where we were staying and, to be honest, we were pretty underwhelmed when we got out of the car – Tongue’s best days are probably behind it. I was too young then to realise how privileged I was to be seeing this part of my heritage. I couldn’t understand why we had left the excitement of the city to take a 14-hour trip to see a little town. However, as I look back now, there was something special about seeing the place where generations of Mackay’s had lived, grown families, worked, fought and died. There were even the ruins of a fort where once our ancestors ran when in danger. Recognising our past is important. If we have no appreciation for our history, we can be isolated. This applies at an individual level, a family level and even a national level. George Santayana famously said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” The potential of knowing our history is amazing. It’s good to recognise those positive attributes that have been passed down to us, that might explain why we instinctively act certain ways. Knowing our history can also be helpful in recognising those bad attributes that have been passed down to us. If we can see those bad legacies that need to stop with our generation, we can start a new legacy for the next generation. I was talking with a guy once who recognised that a bad legacy that had been passed down through his family was how the men in the family treated women. It was “normal” to speak down to them, to put them down and treat them with disrespect. He realised that this legacy needed to stop so he decided to set a new legacy for his kids – one where he taught his sons to treat women well and where he taught his daughters to expect to be treated well. This started with how he treated his wife. He recognised the Biblical imperative to husband to “love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25) A new legacy was created! John Donne rightly wrote, “No man is an island, entire of itself.” We are all a product of our family, our society and the legacy given to us. As we recognise that legacy, we can be intentional in what we pass on to the next generation. Take some time to teach the next generation about the values you see in your past and the legacy you want to leave to them. It’s an investment in the future and leaves a better legacy than was left for you. 8:00AM - 1:00PM

Forest Lake Lions Club update

by Alex Eramudugolla, VP Public Relations, Forest Lake Lions Club. Youth of the Year (YOTY) It is that time of the year our Club has launched the Youth of the Year contests for 2014. We have received entries from contestants representing St John’s Anglican College. By the time this issue of The Lake News is delivered to homes, we would have had the interviews on Saturday 22nd February at the Community House Forest Lake to select contestants for public speaking. Then on Wednesday 26th February the selected contestants would have presented their public speaking skills at the Clubs’ monthly dinner meeting held at the Forest Lake Hotel. Each contestant will have to speak on a topic of their choice and then an impromptu speech. The results of the competition will be in the April issue of The Lake News. Thinking of Becoming a Lion? You can find Lions Clubs in almost any part of the world. As the world’s largest and most active service organisation Lions offer fellowship, good times, meeting people, lasting friendship, service to the community, learning new skills, leadership and personal development. Lions have been part of the Australian community since 1947 serving the people without promise or want of reward. Lions Club of Forest Lake has been serving the Forest Lake community for 20 years. This year will be busy with current projects and the launching of a new project to mark our 20th anniversary, details of which will be revealed in the April issue of The Lake News. We will also continue with our fund raising efforts and the popular social events. And as always we render our support to local individuals and groups who are in need. We welcome new members and new ideas. If you would like more information about our club please visit forestlake.qld.lions.org.au or find us on twitter www.twitter.com@ForestLakeLions.

Monthly Update

The newly renovated City Hall was the first venue for our much awaited trips for 2014. Everyone must have been very eager as the bus was full, with 53 of us onboard. We arrived at City Hall with its outstanding sandstone pillars greeting us. As we entered the building, we were welcomed by the bubbly staff who were to take us on our tour. We visited the basement and were shown the “cancer” in the cement of the original foundations which was discovered when the refurbishment was in progress. Luckily this was before the 2011 floods so it had been protected. The main auditorium, which has been completed to a wonderful standard with the most magnificent copper dome roof with a random light show and its Father Henry Willis Organ taking pride and place at the rear of the stage, was wonderful to see. Unfortunately, the clock tower was not on the list for us to visit as we were limited for time. The original Bustard Stained Glass Windows were beautiful, as was the lovely marbled floors and pillars. Once the tour was over we were shown to our morning

by Maureen S.

venue, where we were served lovely hot scones, cream and jam, coffee or tea. Councillor Milton Dick was present and our President, Leonie presented him with a certificate for all the support he continues to give the club. With morning tea was finished, it was back on the Concorde coach for lunch at the Breakfast Creek Hotel. Once we had filled up on the appetising meal, it was time to head home after yet another great day out. Forest Lake 50+ Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road Richlands at 10.30am, and new members are always welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Kay (Treasurer) on 3278 9406 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618, or email fl50plusc@gmail.com. Date claimers for the next three meetings March 21st AGM, April 11th, and May 16th 2014. Please note that the April meeting is one week early as it clashes with Good Friday.

course, the Christmas spending, or maybe last year’s holiday, might be added to a reasonable pre-existing debt and you are left wondering how long it will take to pay it off. Of course, ideally you should pay off the credit card each month so that your statement only reflects last month’s transactions, and you are taking advantage of the interest free period. That’s great if you can do it; sadly for some people it doesn’t work that easily. I can’t help you pay off your credit card but here’s perhaps a different way of looking at that credit card debt and becoming a little more motivated rather than depressed at the current balance. Let’s say you have a debt of $10,000, the interest rate is 21% and the minimum payment this month is 2.5% or $250. Suppose you can pay off more, say $500 instead of $250. When you receive your statement next month, assuming there are no further transactions, the balance will probably be around $9,675. It still seems that it will take a long time to pay off. However, let’s look at it from another perspective. Paying off the minimum balance of $250 reduces the interest slightly but let’s take that as a given. The additional $250 payment you made has saved around $52 in interest over a year. Next month when you pay an additional $250 your annual savings are $104; actually more when you take compound interest into account. That saving is tax free and depending on your current level of taxable income, those savings over two months might be similar to receiving a pre-tax pay rise of $160, increasing each month. Focussing on the debt still to be paid off...a little depressing. Choosing to view additional payments, no matter how small, as a pay rise...a little more encouraging. Of course, the above principle applies to all debt, whether it is your mortgage or the personal loan on the car. It’s just that credit card interest is more onerous, and you certainly should not be paying more off your mortgage when the credit card balance remains unpaid. As they say in life...where you are at the moment is not as important as where you are heading.
