Breaking news – the Forest Lake Community Hall development application has been formally lodged. Residents can view full details of this project reference A004060173 at www.pdonline.brisbane.qld.gov.au. Congratulations to the many 2014 graduates of Forest Lake State High School who achieved an OP of between 1 to 10. It was a pleasure to attend the Principal’s ‘Celebrating Success’ Assembly to recognise your achievements and the dedication you have demonstrated to your studies. All residents are invited to the Parkinson Ward Neighbourhood Festival on Saturday 29 March from noon to 8pm at the Calamvale District Park, Formby St, Calamvale. Preceding the festival there will a fun run commencing at 9.30am hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Forest Lake and Sunnybank Hills and raising funds for Careflight. During the Parkinson Ward Neighbourhood Festival there will be ‘come and try’ sessions for children including an Easter Egg Hunt, plus a variety of sports and fun activities, performances, food stalls and the afternoon will be capped off with a Movie in the Park featuring Planes: Fire and Rescue. I hope residents will come along with their families and share a fantastic day with others in our local community. Residents will have also noticed work has commenced on the refurbishment of the Amphitheatre in the Forest Lake Parklands. This work will include a new irrigation system and turfing and will enhance opportunities for the Amphitheatre to be used as a booking venue for special events such as weddings. For those families who have children at local schools, you will no doubt be hearing from your children about the Calamvale Carnival and Justice Crew performing on 25 July. There is a fundraising partnership arrangement between Calamvale Community College with Grand Avenue State School, Forest Lake State High School and My Little Coach for Hummingbird House for advance ticket sales of armband passes which have just been released. There are limited tickets available at affordable prices for all day rides plus Justice Crew concert or just the concert itself. These tickets are offered to local residents first. I am sponsoring Carnival Express Shuttle buses which will depart and drop off at Woogaroo St Carpark, outside Forest Lake State High School and at Heathwood Park. These buses will be free of charge for families heading to the Calamvale Carnival and will run approximately every half hour.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis This year, our family routine has had to change significantly. With only one child now at school and the other doing a gap year and not having her ‘P’s’ yet, we find ourselves with only a semblance of routine from one week to the next. It’s funny how much we rely (well, I do, anyway!) on the rhythm of life. Whether it’s a fast rhythm or a slower one, it brings a sense of order to our days and usually means we are more productive and have a clearer head space. Yet, the fact remains that nothing stays the same, and we must, indeed, accommodate and adapt to the changes that life brings us; we need to make adjustments. The word ‘adjustment’ is quite interesting, definition wise. The fourth and fifth definitions are as follows: adjustment: 4. the act of bringing something into conformity with external requirements: the adjustment of one’s view of reality. 5. harmony achieved by modification or change of a position: They worked out an adjustment of their conflicting ideas. The act of bringing something into conformity with external requirements. Sounds negative doesn’t it? For most of us, conformity is a dirty word and we will avoid ‘conforming’ at all costs. In fact, look on any social media at the moment and you’ll find nearly every ‘self-help’ message is generally about encouraging people not to conform. And absolutely, there are times we shouldn’t conform. The world would be a bland and boring place if we all conformed about everything. So, here, making an adjustment is something we might well buck against. But I love the fifth definition - harmony achieved by modification or change of position. By making a few adjustments in our lives, sometimes, harmony is the end result. Just tweaking things slightly can make a huge difference and bring cohesiveness to situations. We all need to make adjustments, don’t we? Our youngest is having to make some big adjustments as she steps into high school; our elder daughter needs to adjust to life outside the school routine; and we need to adjust our lifestyles and habits to make room for the changes in our girls’ lives. It’s important to be able to make adjustments. And it’s important to teach our children how to adjust too. Life will never be smooth or simple or easy, no matter how much we want, or strive for, it to. Not teaching them to adjust, to bend with the ebb and flow of life is to do them a great injustice. If we are always trying to make ‘the world’ fit around them, instead of encouraging them to be adaptable, we are setting them up for hardships and failure once they are out from under our care. Many researchers cite that the ability to be adaptable is essential to success - and not just in a material sense, but in a human sense. We need to be able to make adjustments and be adaptable in order to not just survive but to thrive. What adjustments do you need to make in your life that could bring harmony into your world?

Latest technology in dentistry Technology. We are surrounded by technology. It has changed the way we live with mobile phones and laptop computers and the internet.Dentistry is no different.Materials, techniques and equipment are changing rapidly. The following will give you a little insight into the latest technology available in dentistry. Lasers. There are three types of lasers in dentistry, which are all very different and can help with your dental treatment in different ways. Diagnostic laser. This is used to determine whether there are bacteria or germs present in either your teeth or your gums. It is extremely accurate, in the past dentists relied on their experience and eyesight but now the diagnostic laser is so reliable it will mean dentists can compare the results at each checkup to see if things are getting worse or better or staying the same. Soft tissue laser. Sounds funny but soft tissue simply means gums, tongue or skin. This laser is designed to help with anything related to the gums or soft tissues. Some examples include releasing a tongue tie or removing unhealthy gums painlessly. Hard tissue laser. This is obviously for hard tissues which are teeth and bone. There are several varieties but all can remove decay in teeth quite simply without a drill. It can’t remove silver or black fillings though, so it can’t be used in every situation but it will change the way dentistry is done because it can remove decay without removing any healthy tooth. The laser never actually touches your tooth and you only hear a popping sound rather than the whine of the drill. Ozone. I know,I know. You are thinking that I am writing about the sky since that’s where the ozone layer is.Ozone is a form of oxygen that is particularly good in dentistry. Germs and bacteria hate oxygen so that’s why they like to hide in teeth or gums.A brand new way to kill the bacteria and germs off is with ozone therapy. It is completely painless as the ozone is a gas and is sprayed into a decayed tooth or gums. It is used to kill or sterilize bacteria and germs associated with holes and with gum disease or periodontal disease. In the past, dentistry had one tool to use for killing the bacteria in teeth and that was the drill. Now there are lasers and ozone therapy. Read on – it gets better yet. Tooth Strengthening material. Its commercial name is ‘tooth mousse’ and comes as a cream or chewing gum. It contains the building blocks of enamel. This cream when used regularly can sometimes repair holes without the need for fillings. It all depends on how bad the hole or how weak the tooth is. It was designed right here in Australia and is helping to change how dentists think about holes. All this new technology means that holes could be a thing of the past. Before you get carried away, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to brush your teeth or floss regularly or stop going to see you dentist regularly either. This tooth strengthening cream is just one way to help make your visit to the dentist much easier, like lasers and ozone therapy as well.No-one should be worried about a visit to the dentist anymore.

Monique Merritt (right) doesn’t have long to wait before having her long hair shaved off. The Merritt family are no strangers to the annual Shave for a Cure fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation. Previously residing in Forest Lake and now in the neighbouring suburb of Springfield, the youngest Merritt family member, Monique, will soon have her long locks shaved off to raise money for this worthwhile cause, so close to all their hearts. Debbie Merritt was diagnosed with one of the rarest forms of leukaemia in 2010 and after two transplants, full body radiation treatment and many months of chemotherapy, is now well on the road to recovery in 2015. With her mother and an aunt battling breast cancer as inspiration, 18 year old Monique is keen to help raise funds in the hope that one day, a cure will be found. With both Monique and her brother being diagnosed at an early age with autism, the siblings prove that disability doesn’t have to interfere with helping others and making a public commitment to doing so. “Monique is such a compassionate person, like her brother who did Shave for the Cure last year,” said mum, Debbie. “This year, Monique will study a Certificate III in Disability Services. She just wants to help people. And although her life has not been easy in the school system, she’s keen to study and make a difference in the lives of others living with a disability.” During Debbie’s time in hospital for treatment, she met other leukaemia sufferers, one of which was a young man of 17 named Adem, who has sadly passed away. Adem’s family decided to create Team Adem to participate in the Shave for a Cure each year. Monique is part of Team Adem, and will travel to Adem’s home town of Buderim to participate in the Shave for a Cure event happening on 13 March at the local Woolworths store that heavily supports the event each year since Adem’s diagnosis. Team Adem has become one of Australia’s most successful fundraisers during the World’s Greatest Shave Event held every March and has also become a much anticipated annual event in Buderim each year. In four years Team Adem and its supporters have grown, and raised over $385 000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. If you’d like to donate to Monique and help her reach her target of $1000, simply go to www.worldsgreatestshave.com, click the sponsor button and insert Monique Merritt into the space provided.

Rugby Club celebrates ten years E
FO
K
This year marks the tenth year of operation for local rugby club, the Forest Lake Wasps. EST LA Formed out of the success R of Kenmore Centenary Rugby Union Club, which had 80 players from the Forest Lake area, the Wasps came into being when Simon Abubakar and Nick Black R from the Kenmore club saw UGBY potential for Forest Lake to have a club of it’s own. The pair were soon joined by ‘the two Martins’ Martin Tower and Martin Bowden and expressions of interest began to be sought. “The commitment of the two Martins was the spark of magic that really led to this project becoming something more than a simple dream,” said Nick Black. “After a successful recruitment process, the ball was rolling at last and the interest was enormous. It was an impressive start for The Wasps. “The first training night at The Wasps was an event. There were Queensland Reds players, former Wallabies international Duncan Hall but most importantly, a gathering of young players and mums and dads, all wearing big smiles, all being part of the birth of this very new club. “It was a sight to behold with so many people putting their hand up to help. We found new coaches, BBQ chefs, and people to help with the sign-ons. It was a magnificent summer night that was filled with fun and energy. Along came 30 young players wanting to have a go at this game of rugby. And then the night found another couple of rugby fanatics in John and Lisa Miller. John would go on to become President of the club and then also Secretary of the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union joining Martin Bowden who was Treasurer for several years. Others followed such as Richard Grimshaw and Ben Hofenk who have continued the drive the club forward. The Club had one more hurdle to overcome - the issue of a sportsfield to call home. “There were parents garages that ended up full of rugby equipment such as goal post pads, tackle bags, hit shield and so on. Every Friday night, just like magic, all of the equipment would appear to ensure the training sessions were well equipped. As winter began and darkness arrived much earlier, portable lighting towers were found to ensure the teams had enough lighting to safely enjoy their evenings. With the support of Cr Angela Owen Taylor the Wasps home is now located at Phillip Place Park. The club celebrated the opening of their new clubhouse and community centre in January 2012. If you’d like to enquire about being involved in the Club, please email:president@forestlakerugby.com.au.

In last month’s edition of The Lake News, page seven featured a fundraising event to help locals Ethan and his family. Over 200 people attended the charity walk/run event on 8 February to raise much needed funds for the family. From the Forest Lake and Springfield communities, both runners and businesses played a major role in the charity event, which, without the support of both, could not have been such a success. “I really felt strongly about helping this little family and have known the family since Ethan was born - the struggles, the battles. Then I read one day that they were looking for help,” said Angie Reeves, organiser. “I was planning a little walk with friends to raise some money directly for the family, until I shared my idea with Graeme Randle, then it all happened from there.” Graeme Randle was only too happy to get on board with the event. “This was better than our expectations and while there was a lot of work and organising being done behind the scenes, I am so proud and blessed to have such great friends who supported the event.” “It was great to hear so much positive feedback from participants and volunteers stating how well organised the event was and how wonderful it was to help a family in our own community. Ethan’s mum Kylie, would like to thank the community for their support “Funds raised will go towards much needed medical and education expenses we incur every day,” said Kylie. “Ethan has gone without speech and occupational therapies for over a year now, due to the lack of funds. We have ongoing appointments with a psychologist, neuro developmental paediatrician and genetic specialist, but also require special sensory products, so the money raised will help financially. “I would also like to personally thank Angie Reeves, Graeme Randle who organised the event, Brisbane Broncos who kindly donated a signed jersey from all the team to raffle, AMart All Sports, BOQ ForestLake, ForestLake Tavern, Prosafe, Carl Groenewald Photography, Run Qld, Shafton Hotel, Bellbowrie Tavern, Athletes Foot, Malouf Chemist, Trail Runners Qld, Town and Country Fruit and Moorooka, Bros Saint Brendans Rugby League Club, Springfield Runners Group and to all the volunteers on the day and especially to Nicole Fels, Elissa Nathan and Graham Whittaker.”

Past students of Forest Lake State High School found themselves back at school again but this time it was to celebrate that their hard work from last year had paid off. The Forest Lake State High School staff, parents and fellow students are proud of the achievements of last years Grade 12 cohort. With 35 students being awarded an OP between one and ten, the school has reason to celebrate, as much hard work, by both teachers and students, has gone into producing these outstanding results. The school has worked hard to achieve raise the bar and implemented a continuous improvement agenda in 2010, which has seen significant and sustainable improvement in measurable student outcomes over the last four years. A celebratory morning tea and achievement parade was held in February to congratulate students on their OP’s and subsequent Uni offers and scholarships. Five of the students received the highest possible OP score, with the 2014 cohort scoring higher than the state mean for the Queensland Core Skills testing and received more ‘A’s’ on the test than the state average. Andrea Cupac, Bojan Djukic, Rachel Kim, Joseph Le and Dimity Thoms all received OP one’s and were exemplary students who worked tirelessly to achieve at the highest level. Dimity and Rachel both received scholarships from Griffith University which will cover most of their tuition fees while at university. Joseph Le won the Vice Chancellors Scholarship for Queensland University of Technology worth $30 000. These year 12 successes leave behind them a legacy of positivity; because of this success, students in younger yeas will believe in themselves as learners who can achieve anything they set out to do.

Clean Up Australia Day Clean Up Australia Day is just around the corner and this year we celebrate the 25th year of voluntary community engagement to keep our environment clean. Last year, 572,406 volunteers around the country contributed towards the collection of 15,708 tonnes of rubbish from local streets, bushland, parks and waterways. This year, Sunday March 1, hundreds of thousands of volunteers will again join forces to help to keep our country healthy. But it is important that each of us consider the environment on a daily basis. If you are unable to join the crowds on the day, you can always organise an event through your local school, street or community group to do your part. If you would like to take part this year, be sure to register your Clean Up site and request a Clean Up Kit. This can be done through the website, www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au, or by calling 1800 282 329. Basic Clean Up Kits contain: • Rubbish and recycling bags • Gloves • A site supervisor vest • Documentation including Site Guides and volunteer registration forms. If required, a sharps container can be included with your kit upon request. Business Clean Up Kits contain: • Rubbish and recycling bags • Gloves • A site supervisor vest • A sharps container • Instructions regarding online documentation To make the most of your event, ensure you report back to Clean Up Australia with any stories or photos which can be entered into a competition. I would also love to know of any events taking place across the electorate of Oxley. For further information you can contact the team on cleanup@cleanup.com.au.

“You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.” ~ Franklin P. Adams. Parenting is hard! Discipline is hard. Most parents will confess to moments where they have overreacted, only to regret it later. Alternately, we also have moments when we ‘go too easy’. They are the perennial questions for parents – “How do I appropriately discipline my child?” “Should I spank my child?” “Where is the line between being naughty and being expressive?” “How do I discipline my child without stifling them?” Unfortunately, our kids don’t come with manuals and I do not intend to lay out a blue-print for parenting – I’m still learning as well. But, one thing I have learnt is that parenting is made far easier when we do it in community. As the old African proverb says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” There is a growing sense among many parents whom I meet that they feel isolated from other families. Whether they are parenting young children with the demands they bring or teenagers with whom they feel they are losing touch, parents seems to have a greater sense that they are “doing this on my own.” There are so many people in our community who have experience to offer to younger families. There are many people who have time on their hands to get alongside others, who would be more than willing to if they had the opportunity. The Bible endorses this idea of communities getting alongside one another with help and advice. Proverbs 27: 17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” That’s why the Churches of Forest Lake want to stand with the families of Forest Lake. That’s why we have Playgroups, Youth Groups, family groups and other assistance – to foster real community and to help children and families find their God-given potential. Parenting is the most important job in our society but it’s not one we’re meant to do alone. Reach out to others in your community and share this awesome and rewarding task together. God bless you and your family!

February was the month Michael Beatty came a-visiting. Journalist extraordinaire, extensively travelled, attendee at two royal weddings and has comprehensive experience in various media forms. Michael was a very interesting speaker and although his topic was the RSPCA, he gave us a thumbnail sketch of his background. Probians are always interested in learning something about the visiting speakers. Michael was a reporter, writer and host for a number of BBC programmes. He came to Australia with an Elton John tour and returned later to work as a reporter and producer for ABC radio in Talks and Light Entertainment. The most beautiful woman he interviewed was Ingrid Bergman and the most fascinating man was the blind Lars Olsson who worked saving the Great Horned Owl in Sweden. Michael worked for various networks and during his career has been under fire on the Thai-Burmese border, knifed in London’s Brixton riots, sat on the back of a three point six metre crocodile, ridden bulls and bare-back broncs and even been a barrel man for rodeo clowns. In 2003, he agreed to help the RSPCA for six weeks and is still there today. With his unique and wide background, Michael is a strong proponent for the difference animals can make to peoples’ loves. At times, his current job can be depressing but the good always outweighs the bad. We were shown a video of animals in before shots when they arrived at the RSPCA centre and after rehabilitation. What an enormous difference! Last year the RSPCA took in 45,000 domestic animals. There were 15,000 native animals cared for by the dedicated staff at the Wild Life Hospital at Wacol. The annual costs of this organisation amounts to $38 million and money mostly comes from people as the State Government only contributed just over $200,000. It costs $420 to house one dog and slightly less for cats. Eighty three percent of animals are found homes. There is no end time and this means that animals are fostered until a home is found. The Humane Education Truck named Emu, visits schools and education centres teaching about animal welfare, costs of owning a pet and wild life preservation. Domestic violence is often responsible for Pets in Crisis where pets are used as objects to be tortured in this control of power play. The innocent human victims do not want to leave their pets. Last year 15,000 complaints of animal cruelty were received. These complaints vary and can also include neighbourhood disputes. Research has found that there is a link between premeditated animal cruelty and other violence committed down the track. Probians brought old towels and blankets and a gold coin donation for Michael to take back to the RSPCA. Barbara passed a fitting warm vote of thanks to the speaker. Retirees and semi-retirees come and join the Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc. at the Forest Lake Hotel at 10 am the second Tuesday of the month. The third Tuesday is activity day and in February it is a visit to Behind the scenes look at the Museum and in March it is a conducted tour through Chinatown with lunch included. For more details contact Kevin or Joan on page 27 of this publication to let either know when you are visiting us.
Some people think that once a child enters school the time for lots of play should cease so that teachers can get down to the serious business of teaching children how to read, write and do mathematics. But studies show that the most powerful tool for fostering brain development and the growth of neural pathways, in young children is physical movement and play. Children should be encouraged to play outside, explore the environment, and participate in activities such as walking along balance beams, climbing into cubbies, digging in sand and playing with pebbles. With the introduction of touch screen, mobile devices many children of today are spending significant amounts of time sitting still, looking at a screen, their only movement a simple ‘swipe’ to open a new page. Participation in perceptual motor activities helps children to develop stronger perceptual and motor skills and builds neural pathways. These pathways are the connections by which information travels through the brain and the more neural pathways the more likely learning will come easily. When a child does not have properly developed perceptual motor skills, he or she is more likely to experience difficulty in learning basic academic skills.
At St John’s Anglican College we are acutely aware of the need for a balanced approach to education which incorporates plenty of perceptual motor experiences for our youngest students. We want all our students to have strong foundations for future academic learning and so we ensure that every child participates in perceptual motor activities. Children in Kindergarten and Prep all benefit from regular lessons with our qualified Physical Education teacher and they learn academic subjects through the right balance of handson experiences, technology and purposeful play. Our newly developed Prep Playground provides that something extra, because while the children are playing on the equipment, stepping stones and balance beams they are at the same time developing those all-important perceptual motor skills, so essential for future learning. St John’s is the place where your child grows with the support of the whole community. Walk with the Lions th Last year we held the inaugural Walk with the Lions event which was a fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation. This year we are raising funds to aid the Heart Foundation. The walk, which is two laps of the lake starting at the amphitheatre, will be on Sunday 17th May, with registrations starting at 8am, for a 9.30am start. Residents can register online or at the Forest Lake shopping centre prior to the 17th. Children of Courage The Lions Children of Courage Awards Program is now established as an important and extremely worthwhile project of Lions Clubs in our District. The Children of Courage awards recognise a very special group of children and their families. There are many awards that recognise the achievements of young people, however children with ‘special needs’ were not catered for. These awards are especially designed to recognise the courage and bravery shown by these children every day. The Children of Courage Awards are not a competition. Every recipient of an award is a winner in his or her own right, as the recognition of these young peoples’ achievements will: 1. Act as an encouragement for their future 2. Help them to believe in themselves, and 3. Help to increase their self-worth The 2015 Children of Courage Ceremony will be held on Saturday 21 March at St John’s Primary Campus at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. For further details regarding the project please contact Lion April on 0402 287 066. Forest Lake Leos St John’s Anglican College Leo’s met on Sunday 1 February to plan another exciting year of speakers and activities. For any enquiries regarding Leos please contact Leo Advisor Lion April on 0402 287 066.
The Big Egg Hunt on again The Big Egg Hunt will be on again this Easter with children up to the age of 12 invited to come and join in the fun. There will be lolly scrambles, colouring in competitions, free raffles, music, balloons and gift bags of chocolates to give away. The fun will all be happening on Saturday 28 March between 8am and 9am at the lake. Hundreds of Forest Lake families joined in the fun last year and, organisers MTR Property and the Forest Lake Uniting Church are hoping even more come down to the lake this year. The event is free, however there will be a sausage sizzle and cold drinks available for a gold coin donation. Last year, $600 was raised on the day for the Forest Lake Uniting Church. Last month, the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club headed off to the Jacobs Well Tiger Prawn Farm. Fifty-two members gathered for the first trip of the year on a fantastic February morning. The first stop was to pick up our guide for the day at the BP Service Centre at Stapylton, Mr. James Hesbst who provided an excellent commentary on the history of the district while we travelled to Cabbage Tree Point for morning tea. Here members could put in their order for boxes of freshly farmed Tiger prawns. After morning tea, we continued on with the guided tour, finally arriving at the Hesbst Family Prawn Farm at Jacobs Well. Members could not believe the size of the farm – it was enormous with many dams all filled with beautiful prawns! With the dinner bell ringing, it was then time to head over to Harrigan’s Irish Pub at Calypso Bay. Our guided tour continued after another fabulous Harrigan’s lunch to visit a local fruit farm, where many of us topped up our larder with a selection of locally grown fruit and preserves. After another great day, we headed back to the BP stop to drop off James and then back home to Forest Lake after yet another memorable day trip. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands, 10.30am sign in for a 11.00am start. Please note the change in time. New members are always welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618, or email fl50plusc@gmail.com Date claimers for the next three meetings are (AGM) March 20th, April 17th, May 15th.

Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Welcome to autumn. Cooler temperatures makes for lovely outdoor activities. We had a wonderful first meeting in February. The big Trivia Games event was lots of fun. Thank you to Lyn for putting together some quirky and challenging questions which Barry our Quiz Master delivered in fine form. Lots of people stayed on for a friendly lunch afterwards at the Lions Soccer Club. February each year by tradition members and friends meet at our favourite local restaurant, the Red Door. The Dinner to celebrate Chinese New Year was a great night. Weatherwise it couldn’t have been better. The food, good company, a glass of wine or something softer and excellent service ensured it’s such a fantastic way to get together for the start of what promises to be a year full of fun and enjoyment of life. Who could resist cracking open their fortune cookie and sharing their message with friends around the table? A warm and friendly welcome to our meetings awaits ladies and gentlemen in the 50 something age group. There are many, many benefits of membership with National Seniors and the yearly membership fee is very affordable. National Seniors website is a great source for more helpful information. Meeting date is Wednesday 11 March. Meeting Place - Lions Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands. (Second Wednesday of the month) 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Meeting entry includes morning tea. Special theme for this meeting is St Patrick’s Day. St Patrick’s Day is an annual observance that is popular in Australia on March 17. To our members who are unwell, we extend our very best wishes for a return to good health. This month there are four wonderful opportunities for all to enjoy, starting with Coffee Morning at Diamantes on Wed 4th, Branch Meeting Wed 11th which includes entertainment with a St Patrick’s Day theme (think green), Thurs 19th Lunch Cruise on the Kookaburra Queen, Sat 28th Barefoot Bowls and BBQ at Jindalee Bowls Club. Visitors can collect a copy of our 2015 Calendar at March’s meeting and will certainly find many things to enjoy joining in. Check out our website www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au. Keep your Easter eggs locked up and out of reach. Easter is often a time for celebration, reflection, family and eating. Where would Easter be without chocolate and Easter eggs? But don’t forget that the chocolate treats we enjoy so much are actually poisonous if shared with our furry friends. The danger with chocolate is that animals such as dogs, cats, parrots and horses can’t effectively metabolise the chocolate chemical known as Theobromine. Like humans, our pets love chocolate as well but for them, Theobromine causes a wide range of problems including vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive urinating and hyperactivity. In severe cases, this can be followed by depression, coma, seizures and even death. Most of the chocolate toxicity cases we see occur when dogs jump onto benches and devour whole packets of chocolate or break into children’s bedrooms where a stash of Easter eggs has accumulated. Sniffing through shopping bags and hampers is fun and games to most dogs but potentially dangerous especially at Easter time. Your pets can enjoy the Easter festivities too as there are many yummy and safe treats available for pets such as; dried liver, carrot sticks, dried dog and cat treat biscuits and carob is a perfect chocolate alternative for dogs. If the unthinkable happens and you suspect that your beloved pet has eaten chocolate, please contact your vet as soon as possible. We wish you a Happy Easter and hope that you enjoy the yummy Easter chocolate! But please, don’t let your pet be a victim of your little indulgence. Keep your Easter eggs locked up and out of reach.

Finance Corner
WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.
Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues
Accountants will tell you that when it comes to making an informed financial decision, it is important to take into account all relevant costs. This means not only the direct costs of perhaps purchasing something, but also any offsetting savings and other avoided costs. To give an example, in order to get into better shape over a period of a few weeks my girlfriend and I recently decided to commence a non-contractual diet program involving the purchase of daily prepared meals. The meals and snacks are superb but are also accompanied by what at first glance seems quite an expensive outlay. It would have been easy to dismiss the program based on an initial calculation of the direct costs alone. However, the first obvious offsetting cost was the weekly groceries bill. For the next several weeks the cost of visiting the supermarket to buy weekly food provisions has been eliminated. Next is the normal daily cost of the cup of coffee that is so easily purchased during the walk to work each morning out of habit. Miss it – yes, but keeping to the program and feeling a lot healthier is more satisfying at this stage. The frequent meeting up after work on a Friday for a meal in town accompanied of course by a bottle of wine also came into the equation. Always something to look forward to, but in the meantime it represents a reasonable cost saving to mitigate the cost of the weekly delivered meals. Finally, and this is a difficult one to apply a quantitative measure, there is the considerable saving in time. Whilst I really enjoy cooking up a storm once or twice a week, there is currently no need to spend a reasonable time in the kitchen making breakfast, preparing lunch and considering what to cook for tea. This has been replaced by a simple visit to the fridge followed by a few steps to the microwave. Savings – you decide, and don’t underestimate yourself here, but this time can now be allocated to other things. So, before deciding yes or no on a financial decision make sure you are fully apprised of all relevant costs. In the meantime, I think I’ll have the Moroccan chicken with quinoa for dinner tonight!

The state election on January 31 was certainly a memorable one for me, for obvious reasons. I want to thank all those who participated in any way, from those who actively supported the candidates during the campaign, to those who manned the election booths on polling day and everyone who voted. The campaign in Inala was once again conducted in a fine spirt and the very best elements of our democracy were on show. That speaks volumes about Inala, its sense of fairness and its wonderful people. I would like to thank the candidates, Adam Hannant for the LNP and Silke Volkmann for the Greens, and their supporters for the way the campaign was conducted. I would also like to record my appreciation to all those in the community who helped my campaign in any way. I am humbled by the faith Inala voters have shown in me as their representative in the Queensland Parliament and I am determined to reward that faith by continuing to be a champion for local issues. My focus will be on fairness, job security and job creation and the frontline services that play such an important part in the lives of all of us. It is deeply rewarding for me personally that I received a greater share of the vote than ever before and I can assure you that I will never take that support for granted. My work as a local MP in Inala is my driving force. I encourage anyone experiencing difficulties or requiring assistance or advice to contact the electorate office in Inala where my hardworking team will do all they can to help. I will never be too busy to listen. On election night, as the remarkable events unfolded, the focus of Queensland’s media, and everyone interested in who governs our great state, fell on Inala. The reporters and the cameras could not have been in a better place. I could not have been more proud of my community. Thank you once more for your support.

Men’s Shed garners interest and support Look what’s new in 2015 Since the recent article in The Lake News calling for expressions of interest for a Men’s Shed in the area, organiser, Steve is pleased at the positive response from the community. “We are submitting an application to the BCC for their Men’s Shed grants, and will hopefully secure some funding from there. We have a site in mind which is council owned, so we will be having talks with the Council about using it as a possible location for the Men’s Shed. “So far we have had great support from Milton Dick, Bernie Ripoll and, prior to the election, Anthony Shorten,” said Steve. If you’re interested in being a part of this great initiative, contact Steve by phoning 0421 520 804 or sending an email to bruboy53@yahoo.com.

Garden Group by John Prout
March, the month named after Mars, the Roman God of War, is an excellent month to wage war on your garden. Be it ripping out the weeds, mulching up a storm, or popping in a plethora of plants, March is the ultimate time to launch a full scale (but well planned) attack on your garden! So, all you weekend warriors... March into action! Our first bus trip for the year, Gardens of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, is filling fast. We will tour the Maleny Botanic Gardens, explore the crafty shops in Montville and visit Magnolia Close Garden. For further information contact Jill on 3372 6800 or Heather on 3879 2129. The beginning of March can still be quite hot, but get ready for a busy few weeks once the weather cools down. Not only will it be more pleasant to work outside then, but it will be time to plant a wide variety of cool-season vegetables, annual flowers and spring-flowering bulbs. Talking about bulbs, it’s time to plan which bulbs we’ll be planting for summer. If ordering from a catalogue or from the net, ensure the ones you order are suitable for our climate. One does not want to spend money on bulbs that are only suitable for the colder climate. Place the bulbs in the crisper of the fridge until around Easter. This is also a big month for lawn care. Feed lawns to encourage maximum growth before winter. A slow release fertilizer, applied now, will see the lawn right through until the cooler weather. Insect pests are on the march in March. They’ve had ample time to build up numbers through the warm weather and there’s a lot of growth around for them to get stuck into. Caterpillars grow ever bigger as they feast on your favourite plants. Buy one of the ecofriendly products to control caterpillars, and also treat smaller sap suckers like aphids and thrips. Tidying and dead-heading will be the main pruning jobs for this month. Prune off sun-damaged sections on hedges and feed to encourage as much new growth as possible before winter. Why not include sweet peas in your gardening program? Wait until the end of the month or early April before planting. Planting on St Patrick’s Day, according to the old tradition, may be a little premature if conditions are still hot and wet. However, the date nevertheless serves as a useful reminder to prepare a bed (add lime or dolomite if it hasn’t been done recently), buy seed and prepare the trellis. Our March guest speaker was a representative from Rocky Point Mulching and in April Geoff Day from Nerada Tea will be speaking and will have samples available. I hope you can join us and have a friendly chat with other local gardeners.
