What an interesting trip we had to Brisbane’s Chinatown. Our guide was the skilled and charming Young Queenslander of the Year 2009, Chin-Hing Chan and now Chairman of the Chinese Business Council. After an initial meeting and greeting at the Big Fish at the entrance to Chinatown, we were given a brief history of the Chinese in Brisbane. The Chinese came to Australia during the Gold Rush and when gold ran out, some came to Brisbane and initially were market gardeners. The area now known as Chinatown was originally Charlottetown, a place of gambling owned by Irish migrants with a smattering of Chinese eating places. During World War II, American soldiers stationed in Brisbane had a penchant for Chinese food and so Chinese restaurants became popular. In 1980 Eddie Liu lobbied the Brisbane City Council for the establishment of a Chinatown precinct. All kudos must go to the father of this concept and establishment, none other than Eddie Liu. Although he passed away two years ago, he is still revered for his massive contribution to our river city. Probians visited the Burlington Supermarket where we were introduced to various foods, vegetables and fruit and how to prepare and enjoy them. Our guide explained how to make a one thousand year egg and the symbolism behind it. We also visited a herbal store that contained 360 different herbs. Our next stop was a fashion store that also sold jade. Our guide shared the history of Chinese fashion and the role played by jade. We made several stops to rest before arriving at a restaurant. It was here that we were educated in the finer art of a tea ceremony where Barry was chosen to be the Tea Master. To keep us involved and on our toes, Chin-Hing Chan organised for six of us to learn and demonstrate how to roll spring rolls with finesse. We were instructed and supervised by a chef. These rolls were later cooked and the group enjoyed them during a scrumptious lunch. It was an enjoyable outing with a remarkable and extremely knowledgeable guide. Our April speaker was Belinda Marsden-Smedley, Community Relations Officer from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. It was the second visit from this speaker as she visited us last year. The topic of her talk was similar to her previous one where she also covered the role of QIMR Berghofer and the areas of research. The Institute employs 700 staff of which 500 are scientists and there are 53 laboratories. It takes 15 years to train a scientist after graduation to then be able to be responsible for a single laboratory. A few years ago Probus Club actually paid a visit to the Institute. The only mosquito controlled laboratory in Australia is found in Brisbane and is strictly controlled. There are 45 different varieties of mosquitoes. New areas of research are constantly being developed and funds are vital and always needed for the successful continuation of all research. Mae passed the vote of thanks. Retirees and semi-retirees who want to stay young at heart and enjoy life come and pay us a visit . The Probus Club is known for fun and fellowship. We meet every second Tuesday at 10am Forest Lake Hotel. Come for a test drive. Call Shirley on 3879 9421 or Joan 3372 9923.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Just recently, I received a lovely yellow ticket from a man in blue on the side of the road. It’s my second speeding ticket in the 25 years I’ve had my licence, which is not bad in the grand scheme of things. I’ll leave it to you to decide if I’m a great driver or just very lucky. As I sat there after handing him my licence, I felt the car rock with each car that went past. Judging by the amount the car moved, I think I could safely say that not many others knew or chose to abide by the fact that it was, indeed, a 60km/h zone. I would not be the only one to go home with a yellow piece of paper that day, I suspect! On the way home, I thought about how many cars seemed to be speeding past me and I started to get angry. Why weren’t all of them getting a ticket? Out of all the cars going over the speed limit on that road that day, only a small percentage would pay for it. And the fact that I was one of them didn’t sit well. I started to feel that it was so unfair that I now had a fine and loss of demerit points, while others were going to get away with it. And as I drove home, I noticed every slightest traffic infringement - evidence that it wasn’t just me who did the wrong thing, so why could they get away with it while I got caught!? We have a tendency to do this throughout life, don’t we? We base our behaviour more on those around us than on the actual standards for living. We might treat our spouse horribly but justify it by saying, well, at least I’m not having an affair or beating them. We are impatient and yell at our kids but tell ourselves that at least we’re providing food and clothing for them. We clock off work early but fill out our time sheet to reflect otherwise and defend it by comparing ourselves to the workmate who steals company stationary. We can’t rationalise or excuse our behaviour by comparing it to the lowest denominator. How many of us have said to a teenager “Just because everyone is doing it, doesn’t mean it’s right.? Yet, so often, we think things are okay for the very reason that ‘everyone is doing it’. The fact of the matter is that I received a speeding ticket because I was speeding. End of story. The fact that people speed every day and don’t get caught has nothing to do with it. We must decide for ourselves what our behaviour and actions will be and live accordingly, rather than looking at what everyone else is doing and lowering our standards to be the same or even just slightly better. Our behaviour is our responsibility, no-one else’s; just as we can’t control other people’s behaviour, only they can. I think we need to mind our own business a bit more, in the right way. If we concentrate on what we know to be right and good, it’s much easier to maintain the level of living that we desire, instead of being swayed by what we see others doing.

Your Teeth Your Smile

By Dr Paul Holliday

Do you snore? Is your life at risk? Snoring is the result of the airway being constricted by the soft tissues of the mouth and throat falling backwards during sleep. When this happens, the brain tries to reflexively maintain the full air flow needed by the body and so forces air through the constricted airway space faster, causing vibration of the tissues and therefore that snoring noise. Snoring is a social problem for your partner and family. It can occur in both children and adults. It can also be an indicator of more sinister medical problems. The danger is that if the blockage becomes total then the brain is starved of oxygen and to survive, forces you to jolt awake and gasp a breath of air. This can happen many times in a night and is called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). This often leads to increased blood pressure and may cause heart problems or stroke. You most certainly will be grumpy at times and feel lethargic during the day. When OSA is left untreated it can lead to a decreased life expectancy (along with the increased medical problems). If your child suffers from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea then they may have growth and development problems especially with their teeth, jaws and mouth or nose. Sometimes this lack of enough air every night can make children irritable and have difficulty concentrating in school. It is something you should get looked at as soon as you see them having difficulty breathing. There have been some studies that show a child’s IQ improves when the sleep breathing problem has been solved.

What can be done? The first action to take is to see us for a consultation to diagnose the severity and possibly refer you to one of the local sleep assessment clinics. The important thing is to see what kind of apnoea you or your child has as there are several types. The sleep assessment involves being monitored while you are asleep to see how many episodes of apnoea and what kind of apnoea is present. The treatment may involve CPAP (which means continuous positive airway pressure). This is a machine that forces air into your airway. Many people find this uncomfortable and do not wear the CPAP every night. If you are suitable for a simple oral appliance, we will advise the best type for you. If there is no Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and the only problem is snoring there are several types of oral appliances that will help with that so you (or more importantly your family) can sleep easier. At Lakedental we are now using the latest Somnodent MAS appliance that is proving successful and is being well accepted.

We are here X

We are located in Grand Boulevard Shopping Centre Local residents, married couple Nick and Christina, together with Megan Halliwell and Bradley Crosby, form the team Bigger Berries and will be participating in the Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast this year. The team are seeking the support of the local community in reaching their fundraising goal of $1600 for the event. “I am doing the trek again this year as a personal challenge as I had to stop at the 64km mark due to hyperthermia and nutritional deficiencies,” said Christina. “Nick was my support crew and was so inspired by everyone’s personal challenges and struggles he witnessed on the track, he felt he needed to be a part of it and experience the mateship of the team.” The Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast is hailed as Australia’s toughest team endurance event. It is a gruelling, cross country, four-person team event held over 96km, with a time limit for completion of 39 hours. There is a good reason behind this distance and time 96km is the length of the actual Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea and the 39 hour time limit is in honour of the 39th Militia, the first Australian troops to set foot on the Kokoda Track. Participants (with the help of their support crew) trek a 96km course that leads along fire trails, crosses 12 creeks and summits of 5,000m vertical elevation. The goal is to finish as a complete team of four in honour of the spirit forged on the Kokoda Track in 1942: courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice. In addition to the physical challenge of the trekking event itself, teams are required to take up the challenge of raising funds for the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP) by seeking sponsorship and support. All funds raised go to youth programs, supporting young people in our own backyards. Regardless of fitness level, age or background, people from all walks of life find participating in The Kokoda Challenge not only a great personal achievement, but a way to honour the Kokoda legacy and support local teenagers to gain a brighter future for themselves and their families through the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program. Councillor for Parkinson Ward, Cr Angela Owen-Taylor has proudly unveiled a new memorial at Forest Lake to recognise the ANZAC spirit forged and continued over the past 100 years since the Gallipoli landings, as well as recognising the service of all men and women in uniform. The memorial, unveiled on ANZAC Day by Cr Angela Owen-Taylor and George Churchward President of Forest Lake RSL Sub Branch, was designed as a twin for the previous memorial which was dedicated on Remembrance Day 2000 to those who have given their lives for our nation. “I would like to thank the members of the Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch and Mr Terry Meehan, State President RSL Queensland, for their valuable input into making sure the memorial reflected true recognition for all who have contributed to the freedom and democracy we benefit from today,” said Cr Angela Owen-Taylor. As part of the Centenary of the Gallipoli landings Brisbane City Council also undertook an extensive improvement program for the Forest Lake Amphitheatre including returfing, new irrigation systems, expansion of usable space, as well as the renewed memorial area. The two memorials are now located on a terrazzo base which is triangular in shape and will permit easier access for people, particularly those in wheelchairs or with mobility walkers to lay wreaths around the memorials or under the relocated and now centred flagpole. “This memorial site has become a focal point of ANZAC Day ceremonies in Forest Lake and it was important to ensure it reflects the standard expected by the community. “The new memorial also has the Australian Defence Force Tri-Service Emblem to reflect the contribution of all services, as approved by the Vice Chief of the Defence Force. “I was pleased to be able to provide funding for this memorial through the Parkinson Ward Parks Trust Fund to ensure we have a legacy in our local community to the service of so many for our nation.”

St John’s students had the opportunity to develop their winning entry (an environmentally friendly insect deterrent to protect crops) with leading engineers, scientists and business leaders. Students at St John’s were provided with many opportunities to take part in ANZAC Day Services and activities as the nation paused this year to celebrate 100 years since the ill-fated Gallipoli landing in 1915. Our community takes seriously our commitment to empower all our students to be people of influence throughout their lives and on significant occasions such as this, fine role models held in high esteem in public life are there before our children at all stages of their St John’s educational journey. Students actively participated in cadets, marches and services in both city and local areas in addition to the services held at both primary and secondary campuses prior to the day. At these school services members of our own College community who have served are honoured, providing the opportunity for strong and supportive bonds to form within the community. While many schools have been quiet places during the past holiday break it was business as usual for St John’s students who, in addition to our vacation care programs, were attending sport clinics, dance camp, strings workshops and the Duke of Edinburgh Camp each in their own way providing them with greater opportunities to develop their confidence and to be personally empowered.

Again St John’s highlighted its continuing success as a top destination for STEM students when, in partnership with Queensland University of Technology, we welcomed over 90 high achieving Year 10 and 11 students from nearby schools to the 2015 STEM FORUM. QUT student ambassadors, under the direction of the QUT STIMulate Coordinator, Mr Ian Lightbody conducted interactive workshops in which teams of students were stimulated with construction and electronics challenges. Guest Speaker, Mr Peter Nikoloff, Executive Director of Nova Systems, spoke about the amazing opportunities for Science and Engineering graduates in the Defence Industry in Australia. Mr Nikoloff and his team set up an interactive display featuring the latest in Virtual Reality technology simulating flying an aircraft. To see the greater opportunities available for your child at St John’s first hand, please contact our Registrar, Janette Collins email jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au

Further afield, three Year Ten St John’s Future Thinkers students attended an Innovation Summit at the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, USA through the Conrad Foundation. The competition, which has such partners as NASA and Lockheed Martin, promotes creative solutions to world problems on the part of students.

Letter to the editor Dear Editor, On 25 March, a person or persons, let my daughter’s two dogs out of her yard, while she went to pick her daughter up from school. The smallest little girl, Fifi was hit and killed on Forest Lake Boulevard. A lovely lady in a white car stopped and helped us get Fifi into my car. I just want to thank her again so much, and let her know the boy was hit too, and was found at about 6.20 pm, he is doing ok but misses his sister very much. My daughter would like to catch up with you to thank you properly. Name and details withheld. Please contact The Lake News office on 3201 1880 if you are the lady who stopped to help.

Walk with the Lions on Sunday 17 May After the successful inaugural ‘Walk with the Lions’ held last year to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, this year the Club are holding this event to raise funds for another worthy cause, the Heart Foundation. The Walk will be two laps (4.4kms) around the Lake starting at 9.30am after a warm-up demo at 9.15am. There is no pressure for participants to complete two laps. At 10am, the fire truck from the Durack Fire Station (subject to operational convenience) will be onsite for the kids to explore. Registration is necessary and can be made by logging on to www.doitforheart.org.au/event/walkwiththelions2015. Registrations can also be made by contacting Alex on 0422 008 359 or at the Forest Lake shopping centre where there will be a registration table on the following dates in May Saturday 9th, Sunday 10th, Thursday 14th, Friday 15th and Saturday from 9.00am till 4.00pm. Late registrations will also be accepted at the Stage at the Lake (nearest Forest Lake Boulevard) from 8.00am on the morning of the Walk. Entry fees, with all proceeds going to the Heart Foundation, will be: family (two adults and children under 18 years) $30, individual $15, school/community groups (12-18 years) $10 per participant. Raffle tickets will be sold at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre prior to the event and on the morning of the event in the stage area. The raffle will be drawn after the Walk with 25 prizes to be won. Coffee will be available for purchase and there will be a free sausage sizzle after the event. Prizes will be awarded to the top three fund raisers. Participants can wear decorated hats or other outfits highlighting the fight against heart disease. Prizes will be awarded for the most innovative hat or other outfit. Please make sure that your decorated attire does not interfere with your walk.

The children at Inala Kindergarten and Community Preschool worked on a special project to celebrate Harmony day recently. Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity, it is about inclusiveness and a sense of everyone belonging. Each child chose a piece of fabric and worked with Assistant, Jill Powell to sew a quilt. The quilts will be used by the children as a welcome mat each morning and are a way of saying ‘we all belong here and we all look out for each other’.

Forest Lake teenager, 14 year old Curtis Campbell has been involved with Forest Lake Little A’s for over four years, and training usually six days a week. For Curtis, his hard work and dedication have paid off with his recent Gold win in the 1500m at the State Championships held at Nathan. Curtis qualified for the championships with the time of 4.45.78 minutes, beating his personal best by 20 seconds in just three months. Already well on his way to success, Curtis hopes to one day represent Australia in the Commonwealth or Olympic Games. His next immediate goal is to qualify for nationals for the cross country at his school this year. Well done Curtis. We look forward to hearing more of your success in the future. All the best with your training and preparation for the upcoming event. ~ Ed.

Twenty- seven members attended the Carbrook game on 12th April. The course was in great condition, however the greens were extremely fast. Once again the water claimed a lot of the players balls. The format for this game was a Stableford event, with congratulations going to all winners on the day – A Grade Winner Corey Almond with 38 points and runner-up Greg Robson with 37 points; B grade was won by Marc Stewart 38 points and runner-up Atul Bhardwaj with 33 points; C Grade was won by Brenden Clarke 38 points, and runner-up Craig Maguire with 35 points. Our Long Drive exponents were Gil Vargas - A Grade; No winner - B Grade and Dani Dvornicich - C Grade. The Nearest the Pin sharp shooters were Jason White at the 14th hole and Mick Eveleigh at the 7th hole. Colin Brooke won the nearest approach at the 10th, prize kindly donated by Brimik Cleaning. Forest Lake Lions Club update by Kim Grierson

Children of Courage awards

L to R – Bianca Hopkins, Sean Tuffield, Blake Gee, Marco Villetri

The Lions Club of Forest Lake recently sponsored a ‘Children of Courage’ award ceremony. These awards are not a competition, with all children nominated receiving an award. Children can be nominated in the following areas - special needs, courageous act or deed, sibling recognition, inspiring sporting achievement. The children were presented with Medallions, Certificates and a goodies bag by Lions District Governor, Greg Rollason. They were all very pleased and proud to be nominated. The event went very well and there was a good turnout of the children’s families, school teachers and Lions members from Forest Lake Club and from neighbouring clubs. The children really enjoyed the event and were proudly showing off their certificates and medallions to their families and teachers.

Youth of the Year for 2015 In March, we held our annual Youth of the Year competition. The contestants were Rowan Elson-Green, Jack Ennis, Rebecca Quick and Sunay Joubert - all students from St John’s College. May is the month we celebrate Mother’s Day, so happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, nannas and grandmas. At this time of the year the Chrysanthemum (chrysanthemum grandiflorum) is the popular flower to give on Mother’s Day. Maybe it’s because it ends in “mum. Instead of giving your mother a bunch of flowers that will last a week or so, why not give her a living plant. There are many lovely and colourful ones available from your local nursery and this gift will last for years. What a busy month we had in April with Easter, ANZAC Day morning service, Anita Simonis’ award winning open garden afternoon tea and A Garden A-Fair (a competition between all garden clubs in South-east Queensland) at the Auditorium in the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. Several of our members entered and I’m pleased to report we achieved five firsts, and five thirds as well as Best Exhibit in the Home Grown Produce class. Thanks to all the members who exhibited. A full list of our exhibitors and results will be in this month’s The Good Dirt, our monthly newsletter. Talking about winning, our club won the Forest Lake Community Expo recently held in the Forest Lake Shopping Centre. Thanks to the tenants who voted for our display and many thanks to the members who set-up and maintained our display for the week. We will be having a morning tea at Crossacres Garden Centre, our sponsor, on Monday 11 May at 10am and will include the drawing of the ‘Name the Raptor’ competition. Hope to see you there. A Nursery, Wine and Lavender tour will be our next bus trip on Wednesday 17 June departing the Forest Lake Shopping Centre at 8am sharp. Seats are limited and if you have not booked please contact Jill (phone 3372 6800) or Heather (phone 3879 2129) for your flyer. First stop on the day will be the Wharkuroogma (try saying that quickly) Wetlands & Nursery. Lunch will be at the Kooroomba Vineyard & Lavender Farm with the ‘Great Aussie Roast’ lunch included in the trip cost. After lunch there will be a wine tasting before we head home. On the route home we will have a stop-over in the sleepy township of Aratula giving us the opportunity to explore some of their crafty shops. The guest speaker at our meeting on 5 May is Bruce Ham from Brisbane Organic Growers discussing ‘Soil Diversity and Companion Planting’. In June we will be entertained by Anne Gibson advising us the details of ‘Urban Abundance in the Garden’. Hope to see you at our meetings and share a chat and a coffee.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us!! Next meeting Tuesday June 2nd at 9.30 for a 10am start. Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove

WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.

Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues

A common and quite reasonable question that is often asked is how much income one can earn before income tax has to be paid. Simple question but the correct answer is “It depends”! Actually, it is not too complex. The answer essentially depends on your age and marital status. The first point to bear in mind is that tax only becomes payable once your taxable income exceeds $18,200, at which point you pay 19% on every dollar earned above that amount. However, people on low incomes are entitled to a Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) which is set at a maximum of $445. Accordingly, the first answer, assuming the next offset doesn’t apply, is that you don’t pay tax if you earn below $20,542. The tax on $20,542 is $445, but this is reduced to nil once the LITO is applied. For those people on a pension or self-funded retirees, the income level is higher due tto the entitlement to the Seniors and Pensioners Tax Offset (SAPTO). The value of the S SAPTO is $2,230 for singles and $1,602 each for a married couple, with the unused portion ffrom one spouse becoming available to the other spouse. Taking the case of a single person eligible for the SAPTO, taxable income of $32,279 ccan be earned with no tax being payable. On this income, the tax on the excess above $ $18,200 is $2,675. Applying the SAPTO of $2,230 reduces this to $445, but then the LITO oof $445 referred to above eliminates the remainder down to nil. In the case of a married ccouple, the income level is $28,974, or a combined income of $57,948. It should be noted that both the LITO and SAPTO are categorised as non-refundable ttax offsets, that is, they can reduce tax to zero but any excess thereafter is lost. This must b be contrasted with refundable tax offsets such as imputation credits from dividends and tthe health insurance offset. Of course, in addition to the above, all income from a taxed superannuation fund after tthe age of 60 is tax free and not counted towards the income levels mentioned above. And there is a Federal Budget next month so I hope the above information has a longer llife than one month!

One of the best things we can do is look beyond ourselves. And one of the best things we can do for our families is provide opportunities to look beyond ourselves. It’s too easy in the noise and demands of life to just keep our eyes down and not look beyond the immediate. We can be dominated by the ‘tyranny of the urgent.’ As that happens, small problems can become bigger to us than they actually are. When I was a younger man, before I had the responsibilities of a family, I used to be concerned about things that now seem unimportant to me – looking beyond myself helped me get a better perspective. A friend of mine began a tradition with his children to help them see beyond themselves. After each of them graduated grade 12, he took them on a trip to a third world situation. He wanted them to see how others live and have to work just to make ends meet. We talk about ‘making ends meet’ in our society. But, it’s not until one sees really dire poverty that one fully comes to appreciate what that phrase means. Each of his three children are now adults and each of them still talks about the impact those trips had on them. We can’t all go overseas to see how others live and, in reality, we don’t need to go overseas. There is plenty of need in our own country and community. Serving others, participating in charity, helping those less fortunate can expose us to real need and help us gain perspective and a better sense of what is actually important. Solomon wrote, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1) That is perspective – to appreciate the ebbs and flows of life, to know ‘this too shall pass’ and that ‘stuff ’ can’t last. Ultimately, only God gives meaning. Some years ago, our Church hosted the Watoto Childrens Choir from Africa. These kids have known real heartache and pain, loss and tragedy. But now they sing of new hope and joy. This choir is coming again on 12 May at 7pm in the Performing Arts Centre of Forest Lake State School. Come along and hear this amazing choir. This event is free but tickets do need to be booked and can be done by calling 0403 772 990 or sending an email to admin@forestlakebaptist.org.au. There is a world beyond our own little niche. There is beauty and tragedy, life and conflict, hope and pain, joy and need. God has created us to take our place in the wider community, not just our own little space. Lead your family into that wider world.

From the desk of Angela Owen-Taylor Parkinson Ward Councillor

It was a privilege and honour to unveil the new memorial in Forest Lake Parklands at the Amphitheatre on ANZAC Day. Congratulations to the Forest Lake RSL Sub Branch for yet another memorable ANZAC Day tribute to the men and women who have served and sacrificed for the freedom we benefit from in this country. I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all those members of the Defence Services who are currently serving, including those who have recently been deployed. It was wonderful to see so many in the community coming out to pay tribute. Now the Amphitheatre has been revitalised, it is not appropriate for residents or personal trainers to undertake personal fitness sessions in this space. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our local mothers a very happy Mother’s Day; you all make a valuable contribution to our community building the foundations for our future generations. We will see the Forest Lake Amphitheatre and the Sails Stage activated on 7 June for the annual Parkinson Ward Multicultural and Dragonboat Festival, commencing at 9am with a Citizenship Ceremony hosted by Rotary Club of Forest Lake Inc, the Official Festival Opening at 10am followed by performances, dragonboat races and multicultural food stalls until 2.30pm. Please come and join in a truly wonderful multicultural experience in our local community. With one sporting season coming to a close for our locally based Forest Lake Little Athletics, we are now approaching the new season for rugby union and I encourage local children to join our local club the Forest Lake Wasps. I am proud to be Patron of both of these clubs which have their home base at the Forest Lake Sportsfields. Having local clubs ensures our children have the opportunity to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle and being based close to home makes access to these opportunities easier. The Stapylton Road upgrade is underway between Wadeville Street and the Logan Motorway and I remind residents to be aware of changed traffic conditions.

With its symptoms of severe blood-stained diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration, parvo virus is one of the worst of the canine group of preventable diseases. This is particularly worrying for new dog owners as parvo virus is most severe in puppies with mortality rates of up to 80% in untreated cases. Veterinarians around Brisbane have reported more than the normal number of cases this year. Although Canine Parvovirus is not a reportable disease, in the last 12 months alone 1088 cases of Canine Parvovirus were recorded with Disease Watchdog from throughout Australia. There are a number of possible reasons for this. Like a lot of viral diseases, parvovirus has been well contained by an aggressive vaccination program since it began to spread in the 1980’s. We only see parvo virus now in dogs that have no immunity due to not being vaccinated or inadequate vaccinations. The wetter weather recently may also be a factor. Parvo virus is passed in dog faeces then lives in the ground and is hard to kill. When it rains and the ground gets muddy, people can take it home with them on their shoes or car tyres. Treatment has improved since the initial worldwide outbreaks 30 years ago. Once suspected, patients are admitted into hospital for tests and gastroenteritis treatment based around IV fluid therapy. There are many complications of the disease and patients are monitored for these. In house pathology, particularly to monitor serum electrolytes has improved treatment and survival rates. The current use of plasma products to supply protein and antibodies to these deficient patients has also improved survival rates. There is no doubt prevention by vaccination is the best treatment. Puppies should be first vaccinated from six weeks of age and receive three boosters a month apart. Adults are then best vaccinated every year with a combination of Distemper, Hepatitis and Kennel Cough vaccines commonly called a C5.

The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club’s April outing was to the Strathgordon Clydesdale Farm at Woodford. On a very wet April Fools day, 52 members of the Club thought they were in for a very wet day. With fingers crossed and our prayers answered we arrived at the farm with the rain behind us. Harry and Marlene Churches warmly greeted us on arrival and gave a very informative tour and talk about their beautiful horses. We set up our morning tea at one end of the stables and were entertained by the horses at the other end. Harry gave a very interesting talk about their various horse breeds and later we were given an opportunity to hand feed them and have our photos taken with a huge Clydesdale and a tiny Shetland pony. The Caboolture RSL was our next stop where we enjoyed a delicious lunch and great service. A few generous members made their donations to the RSL (via the Pokies), and then it was time to make our way back home. The Club held its AGM on the 20th March, with members voting returning Leonie Ayling as President, Glenn Mostyn as Secretary, Kay Wills as Treasurer, and Les Brooks as Activities Officer. The Management Committee wishes to thank all those who attended the meeting and is looking forward to another successful year for the enjoyment of all members. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands, 10.30am sign in for a 11.00am start. Please note the change in time. New members are always welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618, or email fl50plusc@gmail.com. Date claimers for the next three meetings are May 15th, June 19th, July 17th.

Algester Update I’ve been delighted in recent weeks to be able to catch up with a number of young people from across the electorate who are putting their hand up and getting involved in some great extra-curricular activities. In April, I met with Jamie Collyer, who has been selected as this year’s YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament representative for Algester.

Jamie is one of 93 young Queenslanders chosen to take part in this year’s program, which is now in its 20th year. The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament offers young Queenslanders the opportunity to be a voice for their communities and learn first-hand about parliamentary process. It has a strong history of empowering young people to take up challenges and lead the way. I would like to commend Jamie for his choice to stand up and nominate for this excellent program and I look forward to following his progress as the Youth Member for Algester throughout the year. I was also able to catch up with four students from St John’s Anglican College who were attending the Legal Studies Youth Parliament at Parliament House. This is another great initiative, with students from 24 schools across 20 different electorates taking part and learning about Parliament first hand. Congratulations to Australia Care and Trauma Services at the Unidus Community Centre in Willawong, who have received funding in the latest round of Queensland Government Caring for our Community grants. Across the state, $1.3 million is being provided in this round as small one-off grants to help Queensland organisations buy essential items and equipment. Community and volunteer groups play an important role in helping Queenslanders, so we need to support them to continue the fantastic work they do. Through the Caring for our Community program, successful organisations can receive small grants of up to $5 000, or for larger projects, grants of up to $15 000.
