Brisbane figure skater, Taylor Dean, has just notched up another achievement in what has so far been an outstanding year for the seventeen year old. Taylor was announced as the Queensland Government 2013 Rising Star award recipient at the Sportswoman of the Year awards. The award recognises Taylor’s stellar year of silver medal successes at Skate Dallas (Texas, USA), Skate Down Under (Sydney), and WinterSun (Brisbane). The Brisbane teen has only just returned from representing Australia at the invitational International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix event in Riga, Latvia. The ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating is a series of international invitational junior level competitions organised by the ISU. Australia is offered very limited places at these competitions, just six spots overall for ladies in 2013, so selection is highly sought after. This is a repeat performance for Taylor who earned selection to the event back in 2011. Taylor, who is ranked fourth in Australia, is looking to earn a place representing our nation at the Junior World Championships next year in Sofia, Bulgaria. Taylor ’s impressive portfolio also includes touring Australia with Dutch “Waltz King”, Andre Rieu, in his “A Romantic Night in Vienna” World Stadium concerts. Taylor is the youngest female skater to be chosen! She has also previously been awarded the Morgan Innes Skating Scholarship (for skating potential). In 2011, Taylor scored a feature part as Tinkerbell in the support act for Disney on Ice. With the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, in her sights, Taylor is looking to earn selection to the World Championships in 2014. It is an important milestone on the long and demanding road to the Olympics. With her determination, passion for skating, and love of competing, she will be giving it her all.

Many local parents would have received a letter from myself and the police recently outlining the correct ways to park and drive around our local schools. I would like to take this opportunity to remind all residents to be aware of parking regulations in school zones because the safety of our local children is of paramount importance. By now residents should have received a fact sheet on how to be prepared for the summer storm season and bushfires. I encourage everyone to register for Council’s Early Warning Alert Service which will assist in providing up to date information in the case of an emergency. You can register via Council’s Contact Centre on 3403 8888 or via the website www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/earlywarning. Work has been undertaken to extend the concreted area surrounding the Forest Lake District Junior Sporting Facility and new long jump pits have been approved to be installed on the Sportsfields. These additions will assist in ensuring Forest Lake Little Athletics can progress to competition level on site and will further support opportunities for young local athletes to develop their skills.

I would like to extend congratulations to all participants in the recent Forest Lake Garden Competition. The many hours of effort and pride of residents in their individual gardens helps to make our local community a better place and I commend them all for it. Of course, events like this would not be successful without the hard work and coordination behind the scenes of the Forest Lake Garden Group and Friends of the Parks. Special mention does go to the Parkinson Ward Grand Champion Garden Winners Denis and Jenny White.

However, it does at least pay to be aware of the consequences of incorrect timing, especially when it comes to taxation...more specifically to the issue of capital gains and capital losses. Unfortunately, symmetry is something which is not always perfectly exemplified in the taxation system. Make a capital gain on an investment and, depending on the period of Dave Johnson investment ownership, it is likely that half of that gain will be added to your other taxable B. Comm C.A. (S.A.) income and be subject to tax at your marginal rate. However, make a loss on the investment and the ATO won’t be allowing the loss as a deduction from your other taxable income. Rather, the loss can only be offset against a capital gain. anfieldlp @ bigpond.com M.DICK ad:45mmWx65mmH 20/01/10 12 What are the practical impacts of this? Suppose Bill has two investments, one has performed rather well and the other one...let’s just say he rues the day he ever set eyes on it! He needs to unlock some funds for another purpose and decides to liquidate the two investments. In the first instance, he sells the good performing investment in one tax year and the poor Councillor for Richlands Ward investment in the subsequent year; it could even be as small a timing margin as one day’s difference. All other things being equal, for example, assuming he sold the first investment Inala Library, just before it headed southwards, this could prove costly. He will have to pay tax on the Civic Centre, gain in the first year and the loss in the second year will be carried forward for possibly an Corsair Avenue, Inala. extended period of time. In the second instance, he sells both investments in the same year. From a tax viewpoint this is a more sound strategy as Bill can offset the loss against the gain. This will either reduce the amount of tax on the overall net gain or result in no tax if the loss on the second investment exceeds the gain on the first investment. The moral of the story...yes timing is important but at least the ATO allows up to a one year period to ensure effective timing on realising capital gains and losses. Phone: 3407 1211

By Dr Paul Holliday
Do you think of dentistry when someone says they want to look good and feel great? Probably not. You might think about getting some exercise, maybe going to the gym or going shopping for new clothes. Being a dentist I naturally think about how dentistry can help change your smile, your gums, your bite, sometimes even more. Often we take our mouths for granted. They get a lot of use (sometimes they get too much use, don’t they?). There are lots of ways modern dentistry can help you look good and feel great this summer. If you are happy with your smile but not the colour, it may just take some whitening to brighten and freshen your smile. The difference can be amazing and such a simple thing will make people ask what you did to your smile. If your teeth are crooked, there are orthodontics to correct the problem. Through orthodontics you can have the smile you want. This can make your teeth look good but it can also make everything function better as well. Most people think it’s just for kids but you can have orthodontics at any age. Orthodontics is not instant but in the long term can certainly be life changing. If you don’t like the shape or colour of your teeth, there are veneers. They provide an almost instant change to the colour and the shape of your teeth. If you don’t like the silver/black fillings, these can be replaced with a variety of tooth coloured materials. These vary in size and complexity and really depend on your own very personal condition to determine the best alternative for both aesthetics and function. Gums are the foundation of your smile, so while you may sometimes forget about them, we certainly don’t. That is why we ask lots of annoying questions like “How often do you floss?” I know...you always floss! Seriously, flossing is important to maintain the health of your gums (as well as the health of your heart). Research has shown a relationship between unhealthy gums and heart problems and strokes. So when we tell you flossing is good for you, we mean it. Even though you brush and floss regularly, you may still have gum problems and need some soft tissue therapy. That’s a nice way of saying we remove all the germs and bacteria around and under the gums so they can be healthy and happy again. Since everyone is different, the best approach to improve things needs careful evaluation. The best approach may be a combination of things to suit your lifestyle and your goals for an improved smile or a better bite. If you want more information, then call our friendly team at Lakedental. We pride ourselves on taking care of you. Now it’s up to you to look good and feel great.

Hello Readers Science plays an increasingly important role in finding the answers to some of the big questions impacting the world today. A report by the Australian Academy of Science argues that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) are the key to finding solutions to the global challenges we now face. It will be important that students graduating high school in Australia are choosing to study Science courses at university. This is particularly so, as the future prosperity of Australia is based on innovation and a skilled workforce. The study shows that there has been a significant decline in the proportion of high school students choosing Physics, Chemistry and Biology courses in Years 11 and 12 in the past couple of decades. The study also found that around two thirds of Year 10 students choosing no senior science made this decision principally because they could not picture themselves as scientists. At St John’s, Science subjects are very popular with our Year 11 and 12 students and many of our graduates choose to study high level Science courses at university. Science is a focus from early primary with students engaged in hands on Science programs utilising our new

dedicated Primary Science Laboratory. In lower secondary students undertake programs which develop their interest and abilities in the Sciences with excellent facilities, equipment and resources to support their learning. They also have the opportunity to be involved in exciting and challenging extra-curricular programs including our highly successful Science and Engineering team made up of Year 9 and 10 students. All students in Years 7 to 10 are involved in projects and activities which require them to think scientifically and problem solve: construct and test ideas and develop explanations. In Years 11 and 12, a large proportion of our students choose to study one or more of the Science subjects with high achieving students also having the opportunity to undertake first year university science subjects through our partnership with the University of Queensland. If you would like to experience our Science excellence in action, please call 3372 0113 for your personalised tour. Michelle Evans-Stuart with Eddie Gornik The children at C&K Inala Community Kindergarten have been fascinated with bugs since the shady trees in the playground became home to hundreds of harlequin beetles. To extend their interests, kindy Director, Michelle Hallesy, organised a beetle hatching program. This was followed by a visit from local artist Michelle Evans-Stuart who spent a morning helping the children draw a variety of creepy crawlies. The drawings will be on display at the Inala Library throughout the month of November.

Local bodybuilder wins Qld Junior title Twenty year old local resident Jake Mollenhauer has recently taken out the IFBB Queensland Championships Mr Qld Junior Bodybuilder title. Held last month at the Gold Coast, the championships demand some serious training on the part of the competitors, with Jake preparing for the event since February this year. Jake has been strength training since Year 12 when the school he attended, St John’s Anglican College, provided a student gym, and his love of the sport began. After graduating, Jake undertook Personal Training Certificates at Southbank Institute and currently works as a personal trainer at a fitness centre in a nearby suburb. Although Jake was invited to attend the National Championships this year, he has his sights fixed on competing at the event next year and is already training and preparing.
More yarn needed as group continues to grow
With over thirty people regularly attending the weekly crochet group held a t S e t t l e r s Vi l l a g e o n Thursdays at 10am, the blankets are piling up but the supply of wool is running out. Thirty five blankets have now been made by the group, with plans on distributing them to charities next year closer to the cooler months. Despite donations of wool and members buying balls of yarn themselves, there is a need for more wool to be donated. Sue Gibbon would love to hear from anyone who has any spare wool that could be used by the group to crochet for this worthy cause. Members of the group have not only found a great use of their time by way of crocheting for charity, they have also formed friendships and created a very social get together each week. Why not join them? If you are in a position to help with donating wool, or are interested in coming along to the group, call Sue on 3279 9561.

COUNSELLING The Lakes Swimming Club aims to provide local swimmers with a fun and challenging environment with the focus on individual and team achievements within a friendly family atmosphere. The club is also registered for the Get Going Funding Program offered by the Queensland Government. New members may be able to qualify for club vouchers that assist parents to afford the joining fee. For more information contact Dianna Remington on 04000 155 39 or lakesswimming@ymail.com. The Lake’s Swimming Club provides opportunities for swimmers who are able to swim at least 12.5m of any stroke. Swimmers can put into practice skills learnt during their swimming lessons while having fun making new friends, catching up with old friends and increasing their confidence when in the water. As the club is run by volunteers, parents and carers are encouraged to be actively involved and to enjoy the experience along with their child, whether participating with time-keeping or fund-raising activities. The Lakes Swimming Club meet every Friday night during Terms 4 and 1 from 6pm to 8pm. The social club is a great way to promote swimming as a healthy and fun past-time, and also to increase water confidence through ongoing skill development and reinforcement of pool safety. Based at the Sam Riley Swim School at the corner of Forest Lake Boulevard and High Street, interested residents can go to the club website www. lakesswimclub.blogspot.com.au, send an email to lakesswimming@ymail.com, or phone Dianna Remington on 0400 015 539.
There is an alternative to nappies
Babies and nappies go hand in hand, right? Not necessarily. Local resident and mum, Christine Nonn, is starting a group to teach mums and dads the technique that enables parent’s to read the signs their babies are sending them. Known as Elimination Communication (EC), the technique is becoming widely accepted all over the world, including Australia. Rather than an early toilet training technique, EC simply taps into what the baby is trying to tell us, much the same as babies having a different cry for hunger, pain or tiredness. Christine would love to hear from any parents in Forest Lake who are interested in learning this technique and would like to attend a two hour workshop called ‘Babies without nappies’. The workshop is free and will cover how to start EC, possible setbacks, and also plenty of opportunity for questions. Participants will also be given a handout with useful links and resource lists. Christine can be contacted on 3129 5970.

Forest Lake Lions Club by Alex Eramudugolla, VP Public Relations, Forest Lake Lions Club.
Lions Forest Lake turn twenty Lions Club of Forest Lake was first established on 29th September 1993 and was awarded the charter by the International Association of Lions Clubs on the 15th of October of that year. At the time of granting the charter, there were 30 founding members presided over by Lion Linda Paton. During the past 20 years, Lions have worked closely with the Forest Lake community initiating and implementing several projects benefitting the community. To mark the 20th anniversary, Lions held a dinner at the Oxley Golf Club in October attended by many past and present members, Lions from other clubs and well wishers including Hon Anthony Shorten MP. Cr Milton Dick, Hon Annastacia Palaszczuk MP and Hon Bernie Ripoll MP who were unable to attend due to other engagements sent their best wishes. Past District Governor and a former president of the club, Lion Heather Short, gave an overview of the club’s achievements during the past 20 years. The achievements are remarkable in making a difference to the community and individuals. Long standing members recalled some of the jolly moments of the club relating some hilarious stories highlighting that Lionism is also a lot of fun in addition to the service provided to the community. We are planning to expand our services further and make the next twenty years a growth period. An Australian First Lion Barry Palmer became the first Australian to hold the prestigious position of President of Lions Clubs International (LCI) when he was elected this year to that position at the International Lions Convention in Hamburg. Lion Barry will lead the world’s largest service club organisation comprising of 1.35 million members in 46,000 clubs in 207 countries. Lion Barry, a retired real estate company director, hails from Hornsby NSW and is a member of the Lions Club of Hornsby. Barry has worked tirelessly in Australia as well as in many overseas countries to make a difference to the people who seek help to better themselves. Lion Barry’s modus operandi is to dream and make those dreams come true. So his vision and theme for his tenure is to set the Lions on a course to ‘turn big dreams into reality’. Lions Help to Eradicate River Blindness River blindness, also known as onchocerciasis, is a parasitic disease that can lead to irreversible blindness which is prevalent in South America and some African countries. Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) donated US$6.3 million to the Carter Centre which has led the campaign to wipe out the disease in Latin America.

Hi all, yes it’s that time again for me to put fingers to keys and write about this months’ successful outing. We left Forest Lake at 8.30am on board the Concorde Coach with our driver Mark, to travel up to Kumbartcho Nursery, Aboriginal word for Hoop Pine, at Eatons Hill on the north side of Brisbane. Upon arrival we were greeted by the happy staff of the nursery, who guided us to a lovely covered area where the committee set up for morning tea, an assortment of homemade goodies cooked by Kay our treasurer with the help of other members of the committee. After morning tea, we ventured into the nursery where the staff, mostly volunteers, made us very welcome. They talked about the nursery and how it came into being. The nursery was once a privately owned wildlife reserve started by the Hogan Family in 1968. This reserve had the second largest Koala colony in the world and cared for the sick to introduce them back into the wild. Then in 1994 it closed its’ doors for the last time. In 1996/97 some of the land was used for housing and later the Council made the environmentally sensitive part of the land a wildlife corridor and habitat. Then it was onto Osprey House where we learnt why these areas are so important to preserve. The wildlife and flora are native to this part of the world and need to be preserved for future generations.

STATE MEMBER FOR ALGESTER Last month saw more than 600 representatives from across Queensland meet at a summit in Brisbane to consider more than 78,000 submissions to The Queensland Plan and identify 10 key priorities. I had the pleasure of attending the Mackay Queensland Plan summit earlier this year with two delegates from the Algester Electorate and taking part in the very first discussions leading towards the final plan, due to be released in early 2014. The 600 representatives at the summit created a list of the top ten priorities for Queensland’s future: 1. Education that is flexible, affordable and accessible to all, including rural, remote and disadvantaged; 2. Communities that are well planned, well connected and engender community spirit; 3. Queensland being recognised as internationally competitive with an increase in exports/business especially in agriculture and ecotourism sectors; 4. Regions being attractive to study, work and life for bright minds and trained professionals; 5. Delivery of economic, social and community benefits through infrastructure; 6. The highest productivity rate in Australia with no skills shortage; 7. I n v e s t m e n t a n d r e s e a r c h i n t o i n n o v a t i o n i n Queensland’s areas of strengths; 8. Centres of excellence attracting human capital and driving innovation; 9. An education model that leverages community and industry partnership; 10. A long term approach to planning and delivery of infrastructure. I am a big supporter of the Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) program and believe NHW groups have a positive effect in lowering crime rates. This year, the Government announced an extra $1 million in funding to NHWQ and Crime Stoppers to encourage the growth of both programs. I would be more than happy to meet with residents who are interested in forming a Neighbourhood Watch. I am pleased to introduce a new email newsletter keeping the community informed on current community news, events as well as available grants and funding. If you would like to receive this service, please email me at algester@parliament.qld.gov.au with your details.

Advanced Beauty
with Thea Soons Advanced Skin Care Clinic
If you recall, my first article was all about the huge changes within the beauty industry. Well, I’m going to tell you about how the financial side has changed. Instead of spreading the cost of several services over a series of months, clients now demand that more and more services be combined in the one treatment. The upside of combining services is that it increases the results and longevity of the treatments – and the downside? Well, today there isn’t one! The introduction of our weekly payment plan alleviates financial strain. Many of our clients prefer this method. It enables them to have the treatments and services when they want, and as often as they want. Our $25.00 weekly payment plan is our most popular. This enables a client to have an average of $5,000 worth of treatments and products. Now, who would have thought some 20 years ago, well not even 20, let’s say five years ago, payment plans would be introduced into the beauty industry? Me for one! Well, enough of finance, we’re coming into the party season, so let me tell you what this season’s party essentials are: What’s hot... • Feet! Smooth heels along with manicured and painted toes, • For both men and women, white teeth and perfect nails, • And for women, great lips. What’s NOT hot... • For both men and women, face and body hair! • And for women, un-exfoliated skin. This season’s look is all about enhancing; making the most of your natural, physical attributes and we’re experts in this field! From perfect feet, to the all American smile, our treatments ensure all our swans leave with extra beauty, extra grace and oodles of confidence. And yes, we’re coming to that time of the year again! If you’re not sure what to buy your loved one, how about one of our gift vouchers? You don’t even have to leave your seat. Give us a call and we will mail it out to you. Now, how easy is that?!

Veterinary News by Dr Ian Gorrie BVSc
Bat Lyssavirus exposure in cats and dogs
Reports are regularly received by Biosecurity Queensland of domestic pets, particularly dogs, coming into close physical contact with bats, for example, through chasing and catching bats and/or ingestion of bats. This close contact forms a theoretical risk of transmission of Lyssavirus to dogs and cats and, theoretically, to their owners. Currently this chain of transmission is rated as remote, but possible. When this contact has occurred, there are two ways of identifying and minimising risk: • Submission of the bat for autopsy to see whether the bat is carrying Lyssavirus. Please do not handle a live bat. Ring Biosecurity or your vet if the bat is still alive. Please wear gloves when handling a dead bat. • A post exposure protocol to protect your pet by vaccination should be started immediately even if a bat has been sent for testing. The veterinarian must have authorisation from the Chief Veterinary Officer to use rabies vaccine which protects against Lyssavirus. Your pet has two rabies vaccinations five to seven days apart and two blood tests 28 to 35 days apart. The primary purpose of the serum sampling is to monitor the response to vaccination. The day zero serum sample is necessary to allow comparison of titre with the day 28 sample to demonstrate the level of response to the vaccine. An appropriate rise in titre between day 0 and day 28 will provide a basis for declaring the dog has a protection from Lyssavirus infection and is safe. Pet owners with unhealed cuts or abraded skin must exercise caution cleaning up pets that have been wounded by a bat. For further information please go to www.daff.qld.gov. au/animal-industries/horses/horse-health-and-diseasemanagement/information-for-veterinarians/australian-batlyssavirus-handling-guidelines.

Forest Lake Area
Garden Group The last month of spring is upon us. I’ve looked forward to this season for so long and now we are one month off summer and our thoughts are turning to the upcoming Christmas season. Oh! Where has the year gone? While you are making that list of gifts for friends and family, why not include a couple of living gifts? There are so many colourful plants, pots and accessories on the market. As we prepare for the festive season, take this opportunity to ‘dress-up’ your garden for the upcoming BBQ’s, parties and other celebrations that roll around this time of the year. I’m beginning to wonder if summer will be hotter than spring. Summer also brings the thunderstorms and it is best to be prepared. Lop off any loose branches on the trees, empty the gutters of leaves and ensure all loose items are secured.

Do you have a particular area in your garden that is always dry as it does not hold the water? Well here is the ideal plant group for that area. Succulents are survivors. We’ve heard it before, but it’s worth saying again. This is an entire group of plants that have adapted to get through tough times. They have clever ways and means of storing water so that they can handle dry periods. Many succulent plants are grown for their attractive leaves. Flowers are often secondary, but can be stunning. Succulents will live where other plants might simply fade away. A typical example is a sunny bank that doesn’t hold water and is baked by the sun through most of the day. An ideal succulent spot! Have a good look at your grafted fruit trees throughout November, and, if there are any shoots appearing below the graft, it’s best to remove these at once! Your tree will thank you for it! At the end of last month we had our last bus trip for the year. What a trip it was! We visited five open gardens in the Boonah area and enjoyed country cooking for morning tea and lunch. Thanks to The Boonah Garden Club for organizing an excellent day. At our last meeting, Noel Burdette informed us of the tricks and tips for successful landscaping. As usual his presentation was excellent and we look forward to having Noel back next year. As our November meeting will be the last for the year, we will have an early Christmas Party. To entertain us, a duet will perform Christmas carols and music from the 50’s and 60’s. Why not come along and join us for this early festive celebration? Visitors always welcome. I wonder who will be first onto the dance floor.
We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us! Next meeting Tuesday November 12th, 2013. Forest Lake Community House, Alpine Place

Save with Jamie by Jamie Oliver
I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t love Jamie Oliver and all he stands for - great food which is fancy without being too tricky, health conscious without being ridiculous, and he likes to give others a hand up in life. Yep, he’s an all round good bloke. We’ve been tuning in to watch his latest TV offering, Save with Jamie and loving it, so when I was offered the book of the series to review, I jumped at it. Written in Jamie’s typical laid back manner, I literally sat down and read it cover to cover one afternoon, drooling over the recipes as I went, of course! As well as the 120 economical meals, the book provides tips on getting the most out of your freezer, how to organise your fridge and what should be in it, and of course, items no self respecting pantry should be without. A double page spread of shopping tips that will save you money completes the set before the recipes begin. Along with gorgeous photos, each recipe comes with a write up from Jamie and the ingredients and method set out in an easy to read and execute format. Save with Jamie is available at Dymocks for $49.99RRP, so why not see that outlay as an investment in saving money on the grocery bill with this thrifty cookbook!
The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith
I’m going to shock you all by telling you that I have never read JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series but it’s true! So when her latest offering of crime fiction came my way, I was a bit ho-hum about it. I’ll admit that the opening paragraphs didn’t grab me and I was a little under-whelmed given her writing credentials but on the whole, it’s a good crime story. Private investigator Cormoran Strike is a likeable, if not predictable, character, putting us at ease by way of a limp and less-than-Hollywood looks. A man in trouble, Strike grabs at the chance of making some decent money and thus begins his investigation into the death of international model Lula Landry. Rowling creates a character that leaves plenty of room for a sequel within a good story line, even if the writing is a little too laborious in parts. The Cuckoo’s Calling is available from Dymocks for $29.99RRP.
Burial Rites by Hannah Kent
I like to support fellow Aussie’s, so when the debut novel, Burial Rites, landed in my hands I was delighted to see that the author, Hannah Kent, is a 28 year old from Adelaide. While spending time in Iceland as a teenager, the author heard the tale of Agnes Magnusdottir and returned to Australia with a story brewing. Burial Rites is that story, and brings to life the true events surrounding the conviction of Agnes in 1829. Accused of murder, the story of Agnes unfolds as she works alongside a local family on their farm in the harsh and unforgiving landscape of Iceland in the 1800’s. With an execution date on the horizon, Agnes requests a young, inexperienced reverend, Toti, to give her Godly counsel during whatever time she has left. The reverend listens as the story of Agnes’ life is slowly revealed. Told with sensitivity and beautiful prose, Burial Rites is a masterful telling of life in the 1800’s in Iceland, of the society and the poignant real events of one woman. I loved this story. It will move you, cause you to question beliefs and will resonate with you long after the last page is turned. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and seeing life in the villages and farms in Iceland in years gone by, and gained, all over again, an appreciation of our modern way of life. This is an impressive debut novel from author Hannah Kent, and I’ll certainly be on the look out for her next novel. Burial Rites is available from Dymocks for $32.99RRP - perfect as a Christmas gift, or why not buy it for yourself!

Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach
With a hiatus in the speaker program, the September meeting really tested the little grey cells of Probians! Barry was responsible for devising a giant quiz divided into three sections which covered normal speaker time. It was the Australiana section that was the most testing and demonstrated our ignorance or was it just temporary amnesia? No team scored a perfect one hundred percent. The best result was only eighty percent and therefore the time has arrived for some serious brain training! A visit to the Brisbane Tramway Museum was a winner. Upon arrival at our destination, our guides Peter Hyde and Ken Howard met us and a tram was boarded that took us to the picnic area where a delicious morning tea was enjoyed. Because of safety requirements, certain areas were off limits to public access. The guides related a brief history of the tramways and its operation which began in August 1885 with horse drawn trams. The first electrical tram commenced service in June 1897. In 1925 Brisbane Tramways Trust introduced bus services but this did not last long and were withdrawn in 1927. Tramways Passenger loadings peaked in 1944-45 when 408 trams carried 160 million passengers. The tram fleet reached its maximum of 428 passenger trams in 1949 to 1950. The end finally came on Sunday 13th April 1969. The trolleybus service also came to an end in the same period. The tramway history also experienced a great loss. On 28th September 1962 a fire destroyed the Paddington depot with sixty five trams. Eight new trams were constructed to partially replace those destroyed in the fire. The guides related interesting stories of the hunt for disused trams to be restored. One 113 year old tram was found under a fig tree and had been overgrown with grass. Volunteers spend many hours restoring these beautiful relics of the past and so preserve a small slice of Brisbane’s history. Volunteers play a vital role in keeping the museum going. Taking a ride in these restored vehicles ignited a lot of nostalgia in this group of senior citizens. Some remembered using this form of transport to go to work or to cricket matches at the Gabba or tennis at the Milton Tennis courts. It was an interesting day full of some youthful memories. An open invitation to all retired and semi-retired male and females, who want to stay young at heart, shake off age, appreciate life and also have fun, come and join the Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc. See page 27 of this publication. Retirement - everybody’s doing it - but Probus does it better.

Children’s Moon Festival Families from all over South East Queensland descended on C.J Greenfield Sports Centre, Richlands, to take part in this year’s Vietnamese Children’s Moon Festival. The Festival is held each year on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. It is a happy time for the kids who take part in the lantern parade, exchanging gifts and dressing up in traditional costumes. There is a wide variety of food, wares, information stalls and rides that allowed families many hours of enjoyment. Springfield Train Station Many Forest Lake residents are looking forward to the opening of the Springfield Railway Station in the next few months. Two years ago, I turned the first sod on this project over at Richlands and soon the second station at Springfield will be open. The popularity of the Richlands station has been clear and the opening of the Springfield Station should reduce the parking congestion at Richlands. Forest Lake Garden Awards I was so please to hear that the Forest Lake Garden Awards were well patronised this year. The bi-annual awards have the potential to bring a lot of joy to residents who love their gardening and the majority of us who like seeing a beautiful well-presented garden. I would like to congratulate this year’s winners and extend a big thank you to Lorraine Salisbury, Park Rangers, Dawn Dormer, Forest Lake Area Garden Group and Mark Newman, Heritage Bank, who worked very hard to make the event such a great success.

ICHLAND SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY GEOFF H U NT
E
October was a very special month for two of our youth members. Charlie Dawson and Connor McLaughlin were both awarded the Grey Wolf Award! The Grey Wolf Award is the highest award given to Cub Scouts and represents the pinnacle of achievement for a Cub Scout. The recipient of the award receives the Grey Wolf badge, which they may continue to wear as they move up into the Scout Troop. They also receive a special Certificate which may be framed and a letter from the Branch Commissioner for Cub Scouts congratulating them on their achievement. To achieve this award, Charlie and Connor both completed their Gold Boomerang badge. This required the boys to complete tasks in 10 of 14 possible fields, including: health and first aid, safety, ropes, outdoor scouting, our Cub Scout traditions, symbols of Australia, promise and law and three other areas of the boys’ own choice. The Gold Boomerang is intended to give Cub Scouts a well-rounded experience of scouting and develop the skills they will need to progress to the Scout Troop. In addition, Grey Wolf recipients must complete four Level 2 Achievement Badges from the fields of arts and literature, nature science and technology, sports and recreation, and our world plus one special interest badge. They must also participate in at least four outdoor activities in the past 12 months including an overnight camp and lead a group of cubs (called a Six) on a bushwalk. Finally, candidates for the Grey Wolf Award are to prepare a presentation to teach their Six about the Jungle Book, which was the inspiration for the way Cub Scouts are organised. As you can see, the Grey Wolf Award is a very special achievement for a 10 year-old Cub Scout and the Richlands Scout Group would like to congratulate Charlie and Connor on their fantastic achievement! Also in October we had our annual group camp where group members had the opportunity to talk with scouts from all over the world via the internet and short wave radio. We had fun abseiling, canoeing, swimming and playing games. A great weekend was had by all. The Group provides fun and adventurous activities for young people (both boys and girls) from ages 6 to 17. We rely on the support of our local community and we are currently looking for extra leaders to help grow the group. For information about any of the Group’s activities or to enquire about joining, please contact Geoff Hunt on 0414 460 402.

Forest Lake National Seniors By Julie Baldwin Branch Update Next meeting to be held at Settlers Village, 41 High St, Forest Lake is Wednesday 13 November. Parking is available on High Street and the Salvation Army carpark on High Street. Come along ladies and gentlemen for a relaxing chat over morning tea. Sign in is 9.30am. Meeting opens at 10am. Forest Lake Branch provides National Seniors members in Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs with an opportunity to get together to meet new people, enjoy social outings and also to have their say and be informed on important issues that affect over 50’s. With over 200,000 members Australia wide, National Seniors advocates at the federal, state and local levels of government to protect and enhance our rights. At the recent Federal Election, 47% of all eligible electors were aged over 50. Check out our website www. forestlakenationalseniors.org.au. Members and guests were treated to a fun hour listening to the talented duo of Jay ‘n Doll. Toe tapping, hand clapping, singing along to some well known songs made for a very entertaining time. Jay ‘n Doll started in the entertainment business together in 2004. Jay ‘n Doll also known as Jay and Carole Jacobs, is a duet made up of a Texan and a Queenslander. They are Country/Western with a little bit of Blues & Folk. Jay was born into a Texas country
music family. While in the US Navy he was a member of his ship’s recreational band, The Oz Trio. The Oz band performed goodwill shows in Hawaii, The Philippines, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Japan. The OZ Trio performed shows in Brisbane and the Gold Coast in Australia for 4KQ Radio. Carole developed her love of country music from living in Texas for twenty-one years and has a passion for playing bass and percussion. Their live shows are a combination of traditional 50‘s country songs and upbeat pop songs from Carole’s repertoire. At home in Queensland, they perform for club socials, cafes, festivals and fundraisers. Several of our members booked to go on a visit to heritage listed Ormiston House, built in the 1860’s, in October to be followed by lunch at Redlands Sports Club. A group will be going to Broncos for the Melbourne Cup function which includes entertainment, buffet lunch, chance to win a sweep or raffle and, of course, watch the big event. We have invited a guest speaker for our enjoyment at the November meeting. The November meeting is the last Branch Meeting for 2013 as we have our Christmas Lunch on 11 December. This is our final event for 2013. Meetings recommence in February 2014. For further information about our Branch please contact either Julie 3278 7274 or Ros 3372 9432.

Mark Mackay is the Baptist pastor at Forest Lake and teaches at Malyon College. I love Brisbane in November! The cold weather is now well-and-truly gone, the cricket has started and it’s a stunning time of year to be outside. Yet, so often we don’t take the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the natural beauty of our region or the weather at this time of year. We get so busy that we don’t stop to “smell the roses.” Getting outside in the fresh air and sun is rejuvenating for body and mind. I was talking to a Scottish lady who grew up in Glasgow back in the days when the smog was so bad that it was possible to literally go weeks without seeing the sun. The haze was so bad that the sun was little more than a dull glow through the fog. She said that they craved the warmth and light of the sun. It reflects our human need to be outside regularly, exercising and feeling the warmth of the sun. I’d be surprised if any of this is ‘news’ to anyone. I think most people know the benefits of getting outside and it’s certainly not uncommon to hear people say “we should get outside more”. But, statistics tell us that we are getting outside less and, particularly concerning, many children are rarely playing outside. And yet, I think two of the greatest benefits of getting outside as a family are quality time and learning to appreciate nature. Recently, we decided as a family to pack a small picnic and head to the local park for Saturday lunch. It was simple and easy to do but what a great time! Leading up to that weekend, we had been particularly busy and this simple picnic gave us a chance to reconnect as a family, to explore a local park and to enjoy some really good time together. Getting outside into nature, enjoying it and, indeed, learning from nature is something that is both assumed and encouraged throughout the Bible and Christian tradition. A traditional prayer says, “How wonderful, O Lord, are the works of your hands! The heavens declare your glory, the arch of the sky displays Your handiwork...A divine voice sings through creation.” Getting outside and enjoying creation is an important part of our humanity. It has benefits for us physically, relationally, emotionally and spiritually. And this time of year is an especially good one in which to get outside and appreciate God’s creation. Take a step this week – go for a walk, have a picnic, go on a bushwalk – and you will see the benefits.
Mums reunite!
Mums in Touch was started in 2003 and so this year will be holding a ten year reunion and celebration. Scheduled for November 16th at the Nook in Jindalee at 7pm, past and present members are encouraged to come along to share memorabilia and stories from over the years. If you were ever connected with the group and would like to attend, please contact Jane on 0407 154 232 before November 14 to secure your place at the dinner.
