News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club Update We had 23 players turn out for the game at St Lucia Golf Club on 21st July. The weather was pleasant and conducive to some good golf after the rain of the previous couple of days. The course was damp in places but the greens fast.

Sunday 11th August we played at Jindalee Golf Club. The day started cloudy but soon cleared for great autumn golf weather. Being a nine hole course, we played it twice from different coloured tee markers. A short but challenging course with some good scores recorded.

Winners on the day were: A Grade was Dan McKay, runner up was Gil Vargas. B Grade was Craig Maguire, runner up Darryl Gore. C Grade was Dani Dvornicich, runner up Stephanie Coreless.

Longest drive in A Grade was Mick Morley, B Grade Jim Wilson and C Grade was Don Mitchell. Nearest the pin on the 8th hole Atul Bhardwaj and the 5th hole Craig Maguire.

Approach shot was won by Alistair McCosh. The eagles nest was shared by Darryl Gore and Mick Morley.

In recent months displays were held in Forest Lake, Heathwood and Ellen Grove areas to promote and highlight the Heritage Bank 2013 Parks & Garden Competition and its various sponsors.

Visitors to the displays had the opportunity to collect sample bags full of garden goodies and enter the Garden Competition and a free raffle for their chance to win a beautiful rose plant or prize packs of garden products.

Heritage Bank, Forest Lake Branch Manager, Mr Mark Newman along with Melanie Graham visited the last display held on the 1st of August to draw the winners of the free raffle.

Garden Competition organisers would like to congratulate all the winners and thank Donelle from Roses by Donelle who kindly donated the prizes.

Entries for the Garden Competition are open until the 6th of September giving residents the opportunity to showcase their gardens as the weather warms up and also be in the running for some great prizes. Entry forms are available at the Heritage Bank, Forest Lake branch.

Grand fete and markets coming up

Grand Avenue State School will be holding a combined Fete and Markets event on Sunday September 15 at Grand Avenue State School, Grand Avenue and Centennial Way. Starting at 8am and finishing at 3pm, there will be something for everyone with rides, food, showbags, entertainment from local performers and over 100 markets stalls Unlimited ride passes are available for pre purchase at the school for $25, or $30 if purchased on the day.

Gum disease – I don’t have that!

I wish I had a dollar for everyone who has said that to me over the years. Routinely, I will ask patients if they have ever noticed their gums bleed when they brush their teeth. Now, if you are like most people you would answer (truthfully) – yes, but only a little bit. One lady said to me recently that everyone’s gums bleed and it’s no big deal. If it only happened once or twice then it is no big deal.

But imagine if your head bled when you brushed your hair!

Would you think that was normal?

So what is gum disease? I am glad you asked. The film that builds up on your teeth is called plaque. It contains the bacteria that cause gum disease. If the bacteria are left close to the gum for a couple of days, then the toxins they produce seep into the gums and cause infection. That’s when your gums start to bleed.

This is called gingivitis. That’s the first stage of gum disease.

This stage can be cured very simply in most cases. Let’s go back to the lady I spoke about earlier. She said to me after I explained all this, “So I’ve got gum disease, it’s not like it can kill me.” She’s probably right. But recent research has shown a link between gum disease and the heart. That means that if you have gum disease it is more likely you could have a stroke or heart attack. Now that I’ve scared you, what should you do?

Firstly, relax. It’s not that bad. It takes a long time in most cases for gum disease to progress to a bad state. Bleeding gums can be caused by brushing too hard or using too hard a brush or if you have a dry mouth most of the time so it may not be an indicator of gum disease. Often you don’t know you have gum disease till your dentist tells you because sometimes there are no symptoms. The sooner gum disease is diagnosed the simpler the treatment and the greater success with elimination of the infection. These simple steps will help.

Visit your dentist, x-rays may be required to help diagnose any gums problems.

The hard deposits called tartar or calculus need to be removed from your teeth by your dentist or hygienist.

Brush your teeth every day, preferably twice a day.

Clean between your teeth every day using dental floss or a special interdental brush. An antibacterial mouthwash may also help when used regularly.

Keep getting your teeth and gums cleaned professionally.

Unfortunately there are a few areas that are almost impossible for you to get to. Every six months is generally often enough.

If you have active gum disease, every three months may be recommended until things are under control and improving.

Treatments Offered When local mum Michelle Hobb was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2011 at the age of just 36, it was a complete shock to her and her family as there was no prior history of the disease in her family.

Having to give up work for 12 months to concentrate on her health, Michelle subsequently endured six months of chemotherapy and three operations, including a double mastectomy.

“I can now say I am cancer free. Kelsey has been playing Touch rugby for two years and in May this year was part of the Queensland team that won their state of origin series against New South Wales with Kelsey scoring the winning try in the deciding game.

The local walk begins its 4.4km route from the corner of Forest Lake Boulevard and The Esplanade at LJ Hooker Forest Lake, with participants able to register on the day at 8.30am, with the walk to begin at 9.30am.

With a sausage sizzle, raffles, face painting, a special visit from Mr. Hooker Bear and Nova 106.9 with their Sandman giving away prizes, it’s a fun way to help LJ Hooker reach the $10,000 target. Participants are also asked to wear red to show support for Cystic Fibrosis Queensland.

Kimberley takes on Guide challenge Guides all over Queensland were challenged to knit bonnets and booties for premature babies. All Guides were asked to set their own targets.

Forest Lake Girl Guide, Kimberley Montgomery, decided that she would set her target for 200 sets and to have them all done by the beginning of winter.

Kimberley, a member of the Forest Lake Girl Guides for the past eight years, organised various accomplished knitters to help her achieve this task and especially wishes to thank her nanna, grandmother, her little brothers in kindergarten and her mum for their part in reaching her goal.

Kimberley was also trying to knit herself and has managed one set so far. Kimberley says “It’s hard work but I enjoy doing it. This is just one of the challenges that Guides Queensland offers Guides throughout Queensland and its lots of fun.”

Kimberley handed over her very needed stockpile of 200 sets of knitted items to the Neonatal Critical Care Unit at Mater Mothers hospital.

The hospital was extremely grateful and according to Ms Gwen Grant (Volunteer) who passed them out amongst the mothers and babies, they would be very much appreciated and cherished knowing that each set was made with love and kindness.

Forest Lake Girl Guides welcomes girls between five and 18 years of age to come along for a four week free trial. Forest Lake Girl Guides meet on Tuesday nights from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Saturday mornings from 9.30am to 11.30am at St John’s Anglican College.

Programmed silt removal works will commence by the end of September at the Lake and its surrounding inlets.

This work is being undertaken in conjunction with Brisbane City Council’s ongoing Weed Removal Program. I advocated on behalf of residents for maintenance programs to alleviate weed growth in the water bodies in Parkinson Ward in the 2009-10 Brisbane City Council Budget.

These programs have been running effectively with a focus on weed management but have also been aided by regular monitoring and reviews of the aerating and pump systems.

Over the past three and a half years, close to 640 tonnes of weed matter has been harvested from the water body at Forest Lake alone, with an additional 80 tonnes removed from the Cascades off Centennial Way. This is a phenomenal amount, equivalent to the weight of roughly five blue whales - the largest animal on earth. The rate of weed growth can fluctuate considerably depending on weather conditions, although three cuts are programmed each year on the main water body, harvesting is undertaken on a needs basis. Many residents of Forest Lake take pride in this local landmark not only for its great outdoor amenities but its aesthetic character.

I appreciate receiving feedback from residents on the progress of this ongoing program which I will continue to advocate for into the future.

September will be a busy month in Parkinson Ward with many local events and multicultural activities.

The weekend of the 6th and 7th September, will welcome the Taiwan Festival to the Calamvale District Sports fields next to Calamvale Community College. There will be an array of cultural performances across the two-day event, as well as 90 stalls, family fun rides, art and craft workshops and an Education and Careers Expo. Come along for what will be a fantastic event.

As part of the PACE program students experience firsthand the life and work of practising and performing artists through links with arts industry professionals and intensive workshops with commercial theatre groups, dance companies and state and national orchestras.

“You will never do anything more important than provide care for a child who can’t live in their own home,” says foster carer Andrew. “We believe that the one vital factor foster carers give children is hope; no one can really live without hope.”

Andrew and wife Simone are two of the highly-valued foster carers supervised by Mercy Family Services (MFS). MFS cares for children in the Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and Toowoomba areas who are unable to stay at home because of their protective needs, through their Foster and Kinship Care and Intensive Foster Care programs.

Foster carers like Andrew and Simone are people living in the community who have the capacity to care for children and who, after a period of training and assessment, have been approved as suitable carers.

Kinship carers are people from within the child’s own family or community who assume the responsibility of caring for children. Foster and kinship carers provide safe and caring homes for children and young people from birth to 18 years of age, for short or long periods of time.

Intensive foster care provides additional resources to foster carers looking after children with particularly challenging behaviours, such as supplementary payments, respite care and extra services to assist the child.

“In all our out-of-home care programs, we strive to respond to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, their families and communities, as well as families and communities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” says MFS Manager Shenade Sawyer, who manages the Brisbane North and South Foster and Kinship Care programs.

“Children and young people need foster care for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it’s because a parent is unwell or they have limited personal resources or support around them,” Ms Sawyer says.

“Or it could be because of poverty, homelessness or serious abuse and neglect. Poor housing, unemployment, ill-health, social isolation and disability can all contribute to a child or young person entering foster care,” she adds.

The aim of foster care is to reunite children with their families. “We recognise that the best place for a child to be, if it’s safe, is in the care of their family. Unfortunately this is not always possible,” Ms Sawyer says.

Mercy Family Services are reaching out to the community to find a diverse range of foster carers throughout the Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and Toowoomba areas.

“Our greatest need is for foster carers willing to care for children and young people aged between seven and eighteen years and/or sibling groups,” Ms Sawyer says.

“Children and young people in foster care are just like other children, except they are likely to have experienced abuse and harm and, as a result, are often traumatised. They need patient and caring adults who can offer them support and understanding.

“As a foster carer, you can provide respite, emergency, short or long-term care. Whatever you choose to do, your commitment will be highly valued,” she says.

July was a very busy month with no less than three functions to attend and of course a monthly speaker.

This month it was the popular, always friendly John Riordan, Director of the local Malouf Pharmacy.

The morning commenced with an open forum, taking questions as John went along.

With the Federal Government cutting costs, there is increased pressure on recommending generic brands.

Probians also learnt about the crises in antibiotics that has become a world wide phenomenon. The development of some bacteria and its spread is also cause for alarm as some bacteria have developed immunity to antibiotics.

If one is on more than five prescribed medicines, a medication review becomes necessary which can be conducted by the pharmacist. John reminded his audience that the over consumption of energy drinks lead to over stimulation as well as hydration. He also touched on the power of the human mind and the placebo effect which has been responsible for some research drugs not reaching the consumer market. A myriad of questions was answered and some queries put to rest. Marge passed the vote of thanks to John.

Driftwater Restaurant at Brookwater was the venue for a Christmas in July celebration. With an excellent choice of three courses or whatever combination one wanted from the menu, Probians thoroughly enjoyed the food on offer deliciously prepared by Irish Chef Kevin Meates. Service provided by Daze Anderson was tops and his experience and professionalism added to the enjoyment of the lunch. A word of thanks also has to go to Supervisor Matthew Tanner and Manager Louise Fletcher. The attractive setting, of course, looking over the golfing greens and enjoying drinks on the terrace beforehand added to a lovely day.

Of course one Christmas is not enough for the Forest Lake Probians so they enjoyed another one at the Broncos Leagues Club.

On the 25th July some members attended the Probian Association of Queensland Friendship Day held at the Samford Showgrounds. They were entertained by the Probus Choir, bush poets and a Dixieland Group.

The Probus Dinner Group is going well and meets on a designated Thursday.

Retirees or semi-retirees come and join Forest Lake Probians who certainly know how to enjoy food, fun, friendship and frolic. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at the Forest Lake Hotel. Contact Membership Officer Kevin, details on page 27 of this publication.

Thanks to the generous support from Parkinson Ward Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor, our Branch now has a defibrillator. Angela assisted our Branch in securing a grant through the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund for our Healthy Hearts program and

presented the portable defibrillator at our August Branch Meeting.

We were fortunate enough to have Mr Da-en Preston attend this meeting and demonstrate the use of a defibrillator and resuscitation procedure. The defibrillator will be taken on our trips. We hope that we will never use it, but it is nice as a back up just in case.

Thursday 15 August saw the launch of National Seniors Election Priorities at Jindalee Bowls Club.

Twenty members from Forest Lake Branch attended along with over 100 members from the other Branches.

Following the launch there was also an opportunity to hear from the Federal Member for Oxley and candidates from other parties. Many important questions were asked. It is worth noting that 47% of voters in Australia are aged over 50. We deserve to be heard.

National Seniors Forest Lake Sewing and Craft group have changed their meetings to every second Monday commencing 10am. Each Thursday afternoon at 2pm Settlers Village hold Bingo. Settlers activities are for anyone over age 55.

Coming up on our calendar for members and friends is our trip this month to Noela’s Gardens at Donnybrook followed by lunch. We have an entertainer booked for our October meeting and a trip to Ormiston House.

Gastrointestinal Tract Disease (GIT disease) is amongst the most common disorders that your pet may encounter. Often these conditions can be minor issues or signs of something more serious.

The most common causes of gastrointestinal disease in dogs and cats are caused from diet, infections, poisons, inflammatory disease or cancer disorders.

The first step in determining the underlying cause of the GIT disease is to rule out the common causes.

This is usually done through taking a dietary history, performing a physical exam and asking questions about your pet’s preventative health care program for parasites.

If the problem cannot be determined based on these findings, your vet will often perform diagnostic tests to find out if the condition is potentially dangerous.

Faecal tests, blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound and sometimes a specialist referral may be needed to get to the bottom of more difficult problems.

If your pet is sick or dehydrated or exhibiting unusual behaviour, treatment may be started to support their body and internal organs. This is particularly relevant for older pets that may already have some organs compromised. Seeking early medical attention can help with a quick recovery. It is important to monitor your pet for signs that could indicate GIT disease.

The symptoms will often vary according to the type and severity of disease. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhoea, bloody stools, constipation, loss of appetite, pain, restlessness, bloating, and weight loss.

Commonly seen causes of gastrointestinal disorders are bacterial, parasitic or viral gastroenteritis, food allergies, blockages, ulcers, cancers and inflammatory bowel disease.

It’s that time of the month where we board the Concorde Coaches for another exciting outing.

This time we travelled to Samford Valley to visit the Samford Museum where we had morning tea and learnt some history of our early settlements in Queensland.

Their history started when the Government sold off Lease land in 1865. Unlike today, the area was heavy forest land with a good water supply. Many changes have been made over the years and land that was once dairy farms and crop growing is now all housing. The museum opened in 1986 but collection of memorabilia started as early as 1977. All the items collected came from all walks of life in the Samford Valley.

We were given a demonstration by the volunteers of how the pioneers cut the timber for their homes and the equipment they used. In the blacksmiths shop we were given an idea of how they made shoes for the horses and fixed any broken tools. Now it’s time to go back to school to see how different it was back then. It’s a real eye opener especially for those unfamiliar with Samford Valley and it’s history of life over the past 158 years.

Lunch on the day was at the Arana Hills Football Club and from the feedback I received, all enjoyed it very much.

Forest Lake 50+ Club meet the third Friday of each month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am, and new members are always welcome.

Yes, we all make mistakes from time to time and such mistakes can even extend to our tax return. In many cases, we realise some time after we lodged the statutory Dave Johnson form that there was a deduction that we forgot to claim.

We are lucky in Forest Lake to have a wide variety of community groups to suit every age and interest, and the Forest Lake National Seniors is one such group.

I have had the pleasure of attending many meetings of the National Seniors and have seen the amazing effort put in by all members when it comes to fundraising, barbeques and hosting social activities for the senior community.

When Dan Baldwin, President of the Forest Lake National Seniors, asked me for a marquee so that they could host events by the lake, I was very happy to oblige.

Last month, statistics were revealed that indicated Queensland has the country’s highest rate of prisoners re-offending while on parole.

To this end, the Attorney-General has suggested a review on whether court-ordered parole and suspended sentences still have a place in our legal system.

Family Focus with Mark Mackay

Mark Mackay is the Baptist pastor at Forest Lake and teaches at Malyon College.

An issue that I have seen cause increasing stress in families is money. Questions arise like: “How do we budget?” “Should we budget?” “What are our financial priorities?” “Should we have separate or joint bank accounts?”

One reason I can see for this is the growth of household debt, which has increased enormously over the last few decades. Many of us can’t actually afford the lifestyles to which we’ve become accustomed. This can have an enormous impact on families – mum and dad arguing over money; not knowing when the next bill will be paid; not having food on the table; collection notices, etc, etc.

To be sure, there are many in our community who simply can’t earn enough – they are in a position completely out of their hands. However, many of us are in financial stress because we don’t make wise decisions.

I knew a family who constantly struggled for money for petrol and groceries and, yet, they had pay-tv and went to the movies as a family on a weekly basis. Though young at the time, it occurred to me that this was really a matter of priorities, rather than a low wage.

The impact, however, of a healthy attitude to money can have the opposite effect on a family. I am blessed to have seen a good attitude to money by my parents. My dad was self-employed and went through tough times in the building industry but my parents knew how to budget and prioritise.

The Bible speaks in great detail about money and financial priorities. For example, “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.” (Ecclesiates 5:10) Don’t misunderstand this. The Bible is also clear that we should put in a good day’s work as we are able and that we should enjoy the fruit of our labour – the Bible is not prudish!

So, we are left with the need to use our money wisely, to provide for our needs but not become slaves to our ‘wants.’

Here are some practical tips: • A household budget is a good thing!

• Prioritising your expenditure is a helpful way of meeting needs first, and then ‘wants.’

• If we find ourselves continually out of control when it comes to finances, some professional help might be a good idea.

These are just some tips from an ex-accountant who saw many people get into strife through poor planning and decision-making. Let me leave you with this: money and possessions are the means to an end, not the end in itself.

Welcome to spring! This is the season we have been waiting for as our gardens have sprung into life revealing the colours of the flowers we planted and a couple of surprises.

September also brings us Father’s Day, Carnival of Flowers, lots of Open Gardens to visit and, of course, the footy finals.

In between watching the finals, there will be time to spend in the garden doing some of the enjoyable tasks required.

Our August meeting was our Annual General Meeting and after we had Donelle detailing the new released roses for this year. Many thanks Donelle for a great presentation and showing us the roses. At the AGM, I was again elected as President, with Carryl Pullan, Heather Pevitt and Jill Lowe re-elected as Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Welcome to the new committee members Bev Burnett, Lorraine Luke and Monica Whelan while Lesley Lambert, Linda Hore and Terry and Lyn McGarrigle have opted for another term. I’m sure with the talent in the committee, we will have an exciting year ahead.

On behalf of all members I would like to sincerely thank Scott and Ashleigh from Hondacare at Sumner Park for sponsoring the garden club for a further twelve months.

There has been a change of date and venue for our next bus trip. The new venue will be Boonah as we visit five open gardens as part of the “Boonah at her Finest” program on Wednesday 30 October. Book early to ensure your seat!

On Saturday 15 September, we will be having a guided tour around the Mt. Coot-tha Botanical Gardens. If you wish to join us, be at the Information Centre inside the gardens by 10am. The walk will be an easy one with no steep hills to climb.

Did you know that growing lemon grass will repel ants and cats! Also Chives grown at the base of fruit trees will help to deter climbing insects and if grown amongst roses, chives will help to deter aphids, borers and spider mites. ICHLAND SCOUT GROUP UPDAT

This month the Joey Scouts learned about games and activities from different countries around the world but the big event was an Australian Bush sleepover where the Joeys learned about the Australian Bush and how to care for it. They put up tents, cooked on a fire, and sang songs around a campfire. In the morning, Kianah had her linking ceremony as she graduated to Cub Scouts. While the Joeys were sad to say goodbye to Kianah, they welcomed three new friends; Daniel, Charlee and Matthew.

The highlight of the Cub’s term has been the District Cub Camp. Cubs from the Richlands groups joined 100 other Cubs from throughout the area for a weekend of skill-building and fun. The Cubs were divided into groups of six and moved through a set series of activity bases. The Cubs also took responsibility for many aspects of their own care and enjoyed a traditional evening bonfire with campfire songs and skits. The most talked about activity was the all-in giant slip’n’slide. It was thirty metres of wet, soapy, heavy duty PVC pitched on a slope capable of sliding multiple Cubs at a time. A big Cub Scout howl to Charlie and Connor for earning their Gold Boomerang badges, and for Mitchell, Callum, Alexander and Cody for earning their Bushcraft badges.

The Scouts this month welcomed Steven and Samuel to the troop. Thenga was awarded his Pioneer Campcraft badge and Nicholas and Lucas both achieved their Agriculture badges for work on their school farm. But the high achiever this month is Lucas, who completed his Explorer Target Badge and Coord by leading his Patrol on two major activities. Firstly an overnight hike along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail around Lowood and then two weeks later, a Lion Hunt through the city searching for all the buildings with lion statues and sculptures.

August has been a busy month for the Venturer Scouts. Our numbers have grown with the linking up of Patrick and joining of new members Brayden, Troy, Kenny and Daniel. Our most senior Venturer Tamika has been working hard and has completed more of her Venturer Award tapes along with attending a Branch Venturer Initiative course.

The Group provides fun and adventurous activities for young people (both boys and girls) from ages 6 to 17. We rely on the support of our local community and we are currently looking for extra leaders to help grow the group.
