To promote Interclub communication, goodwill and exchange of ideas, Kevin organised a Coterie at Verdant, Gardenway for Probus Clubs in our district. It was a successful lunch attended by 26 members representing Mt Ommaney, Jindalee, Ipswich East, Forest Place and our own Club. Guests also included PAQ President Peter Bishop and his wife and Rotary Probus District Chairman Nic Curry and his wife. A few Forest Lake Probians drove out to the Samford Showgrounds to attend the PAQ Friendship Picnic Day. What a jam-pcked interesting meeting we had in August! Eight visitors attended. After the proverbial Committee reports, it was the usual long trivia question and won by Pauline. A short five minute talk followed given by new member John C about his youth and background. His wife Barbara, also a new Probian, was a foundation member of Inala Meals-on-Wheels. Our next speaker was Anthony Shorten, State Member of Parliament for Algester. Anthony gave us a thumbnail sketch of his background, what he has contributed to the area and his plans for the future. Chris then introduced our special monthly guest speaker, Patrick Pickett CSM, Director Australian Musicians & Orchestral Services. He is mostly known for his Queensland Pops Orchestra. His topic was ‘Marching to a beat of a different drum’ which included anecdotes from his amazing musical career which did not follow the conventional path. His introduction to music was hearing a Police Boys Band. He joined the Cadet Band at school where initially he played the drums and at sixteen joined the Army as an apprentice. He played a variety of instruments including the clarinet and saxophone and became a military musician. While at Duntroon, he played for and met many international visitors including Princess Diana. Patrick eventually landed in London where he studied at the prestigious Royal Military School of Music. In 1988 he became a Fellow of Trinity College, London and later returned to Australia as a commissioned officer. A string of achievements and successes, including a Musical degree from Melbourne University, saw Patrick appointed Regional Director of the Conservatorium of Music in New South Wales. In this State, he taught Multiinstrumental Pedagogy at University of Queensland. Another fascinating experience he related was his involvement in performing at the 60th birthday celebrations of the Sultan of Brunei. In 2008 when orchestras became private companies, he purchased what is now the popular Queensland Pops Orchestra of which he is also the conductor. There is so much to tell and write about this successful musician that space and time does not allow. Judith passed a Vote of Thanks. Mae won tickets to the Queensland Pops Orchestra Broadway Spectacular because she was a good listener and answered Patrick’s question correctly. The Book Club run by Mae, every fourth Wednesday, is moving along smoothly. Brian and Zoe’s Dinner Club has proved to be very successful and Probians look forward to the first Thursday of a month when it is a night out to dinner. Retirees and semi-retirees come for a visit and check us out and see all the fun we have. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 10 am at the Forest Lake Hotel. Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis

encouragement|noun: the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope. When was the last time someone encouraged you? It seems to be a bit of a dying art in our society. Encouragement is more than flattery or compliments. It is something that, as the definitions states, gives support, confidence and hope. If you’re anything like me, it can be difficult to take encouragement. Because, I think, encouraging words are mainly said at times when we are down and despondent, we can easily dismiss the encouraging words of others as mere platitudes intended to cheer us up or rally us out of a slump. Recently, I had some encouraging words said to me. I smiled, nodded, and said ‘thank you’ in the right places, all the while, I inwardly squirmed and disagreed with their words. You see, encouraging words always talk about what we are doing or have done right and it can be hard to square another’s perception of us with what we believe about ourselves. I was reminded of how I reacted to encouragement when I encouraged someone else just the other day. This person possesses a skill that I don’t, and they were freely sharing that gift with others in a beautiful way. When I commented on it, however, my words were brushed aside and almost disregarded. There is a fine line between humility and not accepting that we are blessing others. When we shun the encouragement of others, as I did on the inside and my friend did, we’re almost saying that what that person thinks is irrelevant or even wrong. We’re not allowing others the opportunity to encourage and support us, things which can inspire us to keep going or to continue using our talents and gifts for others. I’ve talked before about the importance of being good receivers as well as givers. And this is a case in point. We need to receive the words of others graciously, accept that something we did or said made a difference in another’s life and allow their words to lift us up. And when was the last time you encouraged someone? Have you told those special people in your life that you enjoy their piano/soccer/art/science skills? Or let your spouse know that you appreciate their input into your life? Have you smiled and said an encouraging word to that young mum in the shops with the screaming three year old? Or a harried teacher at the end of a long week? Have you told your kids’ sports coach that you value and support them volunteering their time for your kids and others? We all need encouragement and the opportunities to give it are endless, if we only look around us and notice others. And watch how you receive it, too. Being gracious will in turn encourage the encourager to give more encouragement! Who will you encourage today?

By Dr Paul Holliday

Minimal intervention dentistry

Sounds scary doesn’t it? Well maybe anything with the word dentistry sounds scary! Did you know that in the 19th century people thought decay was caused by a ‘tooth worm’? Dentistry has come a long way since then and continues to change at a rapid rate just like the rest of the world. New materials and techniques appear every week. So what is minimal intervention dentistry? It is the approach where dental professionals help everyone to keep their teeth for a lifetime without holes. Now obviously you are thinking “I already have fillings, what about me?”Well the idea is to stop you from needing more fillings or needing larger fillings when the old ones need replacing. How does it work? Since everybody is different, it works differently for everyone. Your particular risk of dental problems be they holes/ cavities, known as decay, or gum problems or bite/TMJ problems are assessed and various tests are needed to help work this out. Normally x-rays are required to make sure no holes or problems are present before a personalized dental plan can be worked out. This may include looking at your diet or testing your saliva. If you are at risk for any of the potential problems then different methods of managing these potential problems would be used. You may not like some of them. For example, I recently talked to a young lady who loved soft drinks and I am sure you could guess which one in particular she loved. She was drinking it several times a day every day and had come to see me because her teeth were sensitive. After a comprehensive exam, x-rays, diet analysis and saliva testing we found she was dehydrated (because of the soft drink and lack of water intake) also, the enamel (the white, strong bit of the teeth) was very weak from acid (yes that was from the soft drink too). She had a choice to make – stop drinking as much soft drink or face lots of problems with her teeth. Luckily she loved her nice smile more than the soft drink, so she cut down a lot and started using a tooth strengthening paste on her teeth and drank more water. The sensitivity also disappeared. How often should I go to the dentist? Since everybody is different it depends. If you are diagnosed as high risk, you should go more often and if you are diagnosed as low risk, you don’t need to go as often. Everyone still needs to go to the dentist for regular checks and cleans, so don’t think because you don’t get holes that means you don’t need to go – it just means you may not need to go as often as your partner or your children. A good routine would be every six months. A visit to the dentist should start no later than around five years of age or earlier if you are worried about something. Even if you don’t have any of your own teeth anymore you still should see a dentist even though you should not need to go very often. It sounds great but I am still too scared to go to the dentist! Many people are scared of going to the dentist but the best way to stop being scared is to go regularly so that any potential problems can be fixed before they become big problems.

Garden Group by John Prout

Yes, yes it’s now spring and what has September in store for us? Apart from Father’s Day, the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, football finals and the majority of the flowers in our gardens are about to reveal their true colours and wonderful display that only nature can produce. It is easy to be inspired by the colour and perfume of annuals and bulbs in flower and vegetable gardens continue to soldier on. Also as the days are getting longer, this gives us time to relax in the garden before the sun sets and do some pretty serious fertilising, both with our homemade compost, liquid manure, or some of the organic products on the market. This month two of our members gardens will be opened under the Australian Open Garden Programme. First up on 6 and 7 September Carnhugh at 8 St. Ives Circuit, Forest Lake, you will find a charming cottage garden bursting with colour and diversity. Unusual perennials and shrubs thrive beneath mature sasanqua camellias and palms. Sweet peas, orchids and brugmansias scent the air. Flowering peaches and nectarines flank old-fashioned roses, rondeletias and salvias shelter masses of spring bulbs, and glorious hanging baskets abound. The second garden will be opened on 27 and 28 September is Serenity at 8 Collingrove Place, Forest Lake. This is a stunning garden where limited space has been used skilfully. The front is a tropical retreat of cordylines, crotons, spathiphyllums, coleus, orchids and epiphytic ferns. Lush plantings of bromeliads, liriope and gingers lead to an entertaining area featuring lovely hanging baskets. Productive and ornamental plants encircle a small pond. Both gardens are opened from 10am – 4.30pm and admission is $7 to each garden. Our final bus trip for the year is aptly titled Eumundi Markets & Fairhill Native Nursery Shopping Spree on Wednesday 29 October, departing at 8am sharp. Please contact either Jill (phone 3372 6800) or Heather (phone 3879 2129) if you have not received a flyer. Cost will be $30 for members and $35 for guests. What an opportunity to purchase some early Christmas gifts. The many types of orchid species produce many different interesting and beautiful flowers in all shapes and sizes. The latest one to appear is the Orchis italica, which is commonly known as the naked man orchid. This is a species of orchid native to the Mediterranean. They are widely popular for their petals looking like naked men. For a full report and photographs, make sure you obtain a copy of our monthly newsletter The Good Dirt. This month’s guest speaker will be Debbie Aitcheson from The Chilli Patch and her topic will be cooking with herbs. From the scrumptious ones she cooked last year, we are looking forward to sampling more of her herbal cooking this month. Hope you can share the meeting with us. Spring is Nature’s way of saying ‘Let’s Party’.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Join us! Next meeting Tuesday September 9th at 7.30pm Forest Lake Community House, Alpine Place

Celebrating its 20th year, Forest Lake State School is having their biennial fete on Saturday 13 September. It takes many hands to make a fete as successful as in 2012, where over $48,000 was raised to build a playground for the children in the special education program. Forest Lake State School have an old fashioned fete where all stalls are run by parents. The P&C committee rely heavily on volunteers from parents to past students who are now attending Forest Lake High School, and the local Forest Lake Lions Club lend a hand working alongside the P&C with the steak burger stall. The high school run a community program where students volunteer hours, many students will take this opportunity to help at the primary school fete, with face painting, sideshow alley or even flipping a burger on the day. There lots of fun to be had with every child wining a prize at side show alley. Huge trash-n-treasure and great quality second hand books, plus rides for all ages. Mouth watering international foods; butter chicken and chop suey, dagwood dogs and hot chips. Many games to be played and fabulous prizes donated by local business at the cent auction. There will be loads of entertainment all day from primary performances to high school students show casing their talents, dance groups and local talents. To cap off the night, Forest Lake Property have generously become the fireworks sponsor with a spectacular show to light up the skies.

Readers may remember a story in the July edition of The Lake News of Forest Lake National Seniors supporting an effort to take relief packages of food, clothing, toiletries and homewares to drought stricken country areas. The trip was such a success that another round of donations are being trucked into areas in November. Graham Brewer, of Calamvale National Seniors, said the experience was an emotional one. “We were given the use of a large hall in the centre of St George, where we set everything up in long lines of separate items. People then came and selected for their needs at their leisure. “This part of our expedition was both eye opening and heart wrenching. Their embarrassment at having to accept donated food and goods was obvious. Many left trying to hide tears of gratitude. “To sum up on our venture, I can only say this: if old codgers like us at our three little clubs, can pull something like this off, anyone can. So come on all you other clubs, especially those with younger members, give it a go. You will not believe the feeling of doing something very special, on a personal basis. “A special thanks must go to AVIS, the Algester sports club, the Centenary National Seniors, as well as the generous members of Forest Lake and Calamvale National Seniors Branches and the National Malaya & Borneo Veterans Association, and other good folks who gave us cash and goods, including the several local MPs.” Residents can donate items of non perishable food, toiletries, games and DVD’s for kids or cash donations for the November trip by contacting Forest Lake National Seniors President Julie Baldwin or Dan Baldwin on 3278 7274.

with Donna Miscamble

Body Language Dogs communicate through body language. Learning to read your dog’s body language is a key to learning about your dog. We talked about why dogs bark when they are excited, defending their territory, or are bored. Other factors are fear and illness. Illness can play a large part in unwanted behaviour and a dog that is unwell may react or act out. Diet may also have an effect on your dog’s behaviour and personality. Dogs communicate with us and other dogs. It is up to us to learn how to listen and pay attention to what they are trying to tell us. Looking at a dog’s tail and ears is the best way to understand what your dog is communicating. A tail that is tucked down and under or between the legs is a fearful or anxious dog. If the tail is slightly up and wagging from side to side but only a little, the dog may be unsure of the situation or surroundings. A straight and stiff tail signals confrontation - be careful of this sign as the dog may react badly. The tail that is up and curled over but still wagging a little means the dog is on guard. We all know what the tail of a happy and friendly dog looks like - like your dog is about to take off and fly away! These are only some of the tail movements which can change in the blink of an eye. The ears are another great indicator of how your dog is feeling; they can be straight up, flattened, forward or backward. Learning your dogs body language will help you understand what your dog is trying to tell you, so when they bark or whine you will understand why, which is a big step towards changing unwanted behaviour like barking. There are, of course, other methods to control barking - citronella spray, E-Collars or bark collars, water spray, whistles, and clickers. A bark collar or citronella spray can help but are not a permanent solution unless used in conjunction with a training regime, as once the dog becomes accustomed to the effect they will still continue barking. These products are best used as a negative reinforcement and are more effective when followed by a positive reinforcement. When they stop the unwanted behaviour, a treat and a positive verbal affirmation works best. Dogs are happiest when you are letting them know what you want from them. A quote from a well-known canine behaviourist The way a positive reinforcement is carried out is more important than the amount. Veterinary News by Dr Ian Gorrie BVSc

It’s tick season again We are preparing for the onset of the tick season around Forest Lake. Paralysis ticks infest pets that walk in or near bushland or in well-established native gardens. The tick completes a three-stage lifecycle with larva, nymph, and adult requiring a host animal for survival. The main native host is the bandicoot which is immune to the poison. Pet owners may not ever see bandicoots but may see holes in their lawns where bandicoots feed. Larvae are the size of a pinhead and have a light gray to blue-black appearance. Nymphs are a few millimetres long with similar colouring to the larvae. Adults are light gray, oval shape and engorge to the size of a thumbnail if not found. Symptoms appear as quickly as one to two days after the start of engorgement. The first symptoms are loss of coordination, a change in voice and retching, coughing or vomiting. Not all pets follow this simple progression. Pets will die from the complications related to not being able to get enough oxygen due to uncontrollable heart and respiratory problems. If you suspect your pet has tick poisoning, contact your vet. Keep your pet cool, relaxed and don’t allow them to drink or eat as vomiting can lead to aspiration. Spray the tick with a pyrethrum to kill it and remove it when dead or let your vet remove it. Treatment involves giving an appropriate dose of antiserum and intensive support in hospital until better. These sounds easy, but believe me it is not! Each case is so different. Some dogs seem more susceptible to the severe complications than others. Each tick also seems to have a different amount of poison as well which alters the dose of serum needed for treatment from case to case. Some ticks cannot be found even though we know they are there. Thick coats, knots, hiding in body orifices and preexisting health issues all make treatment frustrating. Pets that have been treated before and cats in general are prone to allergic reactions to the serum. Only prevention is the safest and least expensive approach to the tick problem. In addition to daily searches and grooming and clipping in thick coated breeds, we recommend one or all of the following: • Advantix spotton for dogs only; • Preventic tick collars for dogs only; • Frontline spray or Topspot spotton in cats; • Pyrethrin sprays or dips. There is nothing new on the market so pick up your favourite products that you used last year ASAP.

Tori the Shih Tzu cross who was happily adopted at last years event. If you’re looking to buy a pet, be sure to visit the Brisbane Showgrounds on Saturday September 20 from 9am to 3pm. RSPCA Queensland is hosting its second annual Big AdoptOut! With over 150 dogs and puppies available to adopt from over 30 different animal welfare and rescue groups, there is sure to be a pet to suit your lifestyle. Last year’s Big Adopt-Out saw over 100 canines find their furever home. RSPCA Qld Rehoming and Rescue Coordinator Nicci Exposito said the Big Adopt-Out was a good example of what collaboration can do in saving animals’ lives. “RSPCA Qld works closely with many rescue groups Australia-wide. By coming together for the day, we not only saved the lives of animals adopted on the day but forged stronger links between all the groups,” said Nicci. If you are seeking a second furry companion, you can bring your own dog to the Big Adopt-Out so that your pet will be able to meet a potential new companion on the day to ensure a happy, furry relationship. Please be mindful that there will be lots of dogs at the Big Adopt-Out, so please only bring your pooch if they are looking for a longterm relationship. Last year, Forest Lake resident, Cynthia, attended the Big Adopt-Out, looking for a new friend for her Border Collie, Bandit. Stopping at the RSPCA stall, Cynthia spotted Tori the Shih Tzu cross. “She looked up at me and it was like my heart had been struck by a thunderbolt. I was smitten.” Cynthia then had time to introduce Bandit to Tori. They quickly warmed to each other and now the two are inseparable. Local Playgroups celebrate Dress Up Day Playgroup Queensland supporters are celebrating Dress up Day to raise funds for the Playgroup Children’s Foundation. Dress up Day, held during the week of 15 to 19 September, is the chance for all kids and adults to dress up and raise much needed funds so children can play in excellent quality, low cost, safe and supportive environments. “Dress up Day is all about supporting Queensland kids and highlighting the importance of play for children,” said Playgroup Queensland CEO Leonie Wallwork. “We encourage all local Playgroups to participate in the day and encourage local families to attend Playgroup.” “By dressing up and making a donation, groups will be helping very young children across Queensland. Many children do not attend childcare or kindergarten, so families depend on the work of Playgroup Queensland to provide social and educational support for children’s young developing minds and provide emotional support for parents,” Ms Wallwork said. The Foundation endeavours to establish new Playgroups, improve Playgroup facilities, purchase educational toys and equipment and provide parenting resources and support. Local Playgroups can get involved by registering their event with Playgroup Queensland and inviting local families to attend on the day. There are several prizes up for grabs, including a $500 Crayola gift voucher. For more information and to register your Playgroup to participate, email dressupday@playgroupqld.com.au.

Opposition teams who arrived to take on the Forest Lake Wasps Junior Rugby Union Club on Saturday, 26 July, could be forgiven for thinking nothing untoward had happened just two days before. On a crisp and clear August morning, 66 enthusiastic members from the Forest Lake 50+ Club eagerly boarded our Concorde Coaches and headed off to Redcliffe for the day. Our first stop was Woody Point picnic grounds right on the bay, for a delicious morning tea, catered by some of our talented members. Following morning tea, the majority of members headed off to Redcliffe to explore the Bee Gees Walk of Fame and then partake of some retail therapy at the local shops. After shopping, it was back to Woody Point for a wonderful picnic lunch which was eagerly devoured by all. We then enjoyed a relaxing afternoon at this very picturesque bayside park. Reluctantly, members boarded the coaches for the trip back to Forest Lake. The Forest Lake 50+ Club Inc. is a local community based organisation that was formed over 20 years ago for people in the over 50 age group living in Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs. Charity Book Swap gets kids reading Something magical happens when you read a good book and this August Forest Lake Shopping Centre launched its inaugural Charity Book Swap, encouraging local book-lovers to share their favourite books with others. The ‘Book Nook’, located outside Nextra, was quickly filled with a variety of donated books. “We discovered a whole range of different reading tastes – customers swapped an eclectic range of books, from cookbooks, to children’s books, text books and a good range of non-fiction,” explained Forest Lake Shopping Centre Marketing Manager, Linda Loosley. Customers who swapped a book were asked to make a $2 donation to Books in Homes Australia – a project which aims to encourage a lifelong love of reading in young children by giving them and their families a variety of brand new books to take home and keep each year. Leanne Hodge, Principal of Ngalangangpum School, facilitates the Books In Homes program for some of her students. “The high quality new books provided by Books in Homes are special to the children and their families, as they are not secondhand cast-offs. The books are valued as a gift, the children are excited to receive them and therefore excited about reading them,” said Leanne. Through the fun of the Book Swap, and with the help and generosity of the Forest Lake community, the centre will be presenting the Books in Homes with a donation which will sponsor several families on the program. Due to popular demand, The Book Swap, which was due to run until the end of August, will continue at Forest Lake Shopping Centre until at least the end of September.

Family Focus Recently, we went on a family break to Sydney. As a born-and-bred Queenslander, it’s no secret that I am parochial about that fact so I probably went with a fairly critical eye to the land south of the border. But one thing that really struck us was how unhelpful people seemed to be when we were in the city. Particularly when it came to getting around train stations with little children, we found that people very rarely offered to help my wife. But, on reflection, I think I was probably just being insular when I blamed the issue on Sydney-siders. Simple acts of courtesy and kindness don’t seem to be as common as one might expect. Elementary things like opening the door for people and helping someone on the footpath are simple examples but then we turn to the more significant acts of kindness like helping a neighbour in need or striking up a conversation with someone who is lonely. We need acts of kindness – simple, random, unprovoked and unrequited acts of kindness. Think about when you have been the beneficiary of a kind act. For five months earlier this year, I was unable to drive for medical reasons. I am incredibly grateful to the people of our church who helped our family out so much by giving me lifts so often over that five months. Those people did it without any concern for something in return – it was just a simple kindness. Mother Theresa famously said, “In this life we cannot always do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” The Bible also speaks of the virtue of kindness as both a character at the heart of God and also one of the virtues encouraged in people. Indeed, we are told to ‘clothe’ ourselves in kindness (Colossians 3:12). It may seem a simple thing to say – perhaps even trite to talk about the ‘power of kindness’ but, in a world torn apart by strife and hatred, the counter-cultural impact of radical kindness will have a world-changing effect. Where can this kindness start? Take Mother Theresa’s advice and set an example in the small things of life – in the simple opportunities that come across our paths every day. Show the next generation what can happen when we approach each day with kindness. Let’s see the positive impact it has in our homes and our community.

FROM THE DESK OF

Anthony Shorten

MP

STATE MEMBER FOR ALGESTER

I would like to start this month’s column with a big congratulations to the Grand Ave State School P&C, led by their President Gavin Rook, for a fantastic Ekka day carnival held at the school on the public holiday. The carnival was well supported by Forest Lake residents and I had the opportunity to talk to so many about local issues. Well done to the P&C and given its success I suspect that it will be on again next year. We all know someone in our community who has been affected by cancer; it is doubly testing when that someone is a child. As a show of support for children with cancer, I have asked Joanne Aston of Forest Lake Shopping Centre if the clock tower can be lit gold as part of Going Gold in September. So if you are out and about in Forest Lake and see the clock face gold, please stop and remember the families and children going through the battle with cancer. As residents would know, our local Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club suffered damage from an arson attack last month. This senseless act of vandalism on a community group which is providing our young people with sport and enjoyment is simply disgusting. I was able to join with the club and other local sporting groups, Little Athletics and Lakers Netballers at their Fun Day to raise money to assist the club. It was great to see the Forest Lake community rally around and support the club.

Anthony Shorten, MP with Grand Avenue State School music students Tiana Hughes, Cameron Randolph, Neve Duncan and Georgia Arthur-Womham Grand Avenue State School has hit a high note after being awarded $31 547 from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to purchase musical instruments. The funding has enabled the school to add a tuba, French horns, timpani, clarinets and a double bass to the pool of instruments that are loaned to students. Not every family can afford to buy expensive musical instruments so this grant will help more students with a passion for music to be involved. The school has a vibrant music program with the band and string ensembles recently participating in Fanfare with over 400 other Queensland state schools. The band received a Gold Award and the Senior and Junior Strings Ensembles both received a Silver Award.

Preparations are underway for our annual ‘Welcome the Babies’ community event, and I would love any new parents in Forest Lake with a baby less than 18 months of age to take part in the celebrations. Additionally, every baby will receive a welcoming certificate and a gift bag. This year promises to build upon last year’s popular event, with planned activities from clowns to jumping castles, as well as stalls and tips for new mothers and fathers. Because of the high demand this event normally brings, I urge you to get in contact with Margaret of South West Progress Association on either 0419 026 738 or 3271 4867 to give notice of your attendance. As always, if you have any queries for me, please feel free to contact my office on 3372 3207 or email Inala@parliament. qld.gov.au at any time.

Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Peter Cuttance

Member for Inala

Sunday 3rd August saw the club members at the Carbrook Golf Club for an early start and dressed for the cold weather and the threat of rain, which fortunately held off. Twenty-six members and three visitors turned up to a course that was dry with plenty of run and the pins in some tight positions. Nonetheless, everyone enjoyed the game, as they should. Winners on the day were in A Grade Gil Vargas, runner up was Andrew Baker. B Grade winner John Clarke, runner up was Pat Ayling. C grade winner Murray Diaz, runner up was Steve McKay. Longest drive winners in A Grade Josh Wilson, B Grade Pat Ayling and no winner in C Grade. Nearest the pin winners Colin Brooke and Gil Vargas and the approach shot was won by Bruno Dvornicich (visitor). Congratulations to all the winners. Our next games will be 14th September at Oxley Golf Club (check tee time) for the 3rd round of the Club Championship and 28th September at St Lucia Golf Club, tee time 6.28am. Unfortunately two of our club members have passed away in the last few months Ellis Lalor and Jim Wilson, both previously held office as treasurer and president respectively. The committee, on behalf of all the members, offer their sincere condolences to their families. Both will be missed. Rule 2.d.6 (b) A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The senior player must estimate the distance the ball would have travelled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there. Rule 3.b.3 (g) There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging himself or herself with a penalty. Rule 4.c.7 (h) If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity supersedes the Rules of Golf. The Forest Lake Social Golf Club is proudly sponsored by the Heritage Community Bank Branch at Forest Lake and the Jindalee Golf Club.

From the desk of

Angela Owen-Taylor Parkinson Ward Councillor

The past month has seen so much happening with projects moving ahead in Parkinson Ward. Not only is Parkinson Ward going to have the $2m Forest Lake Community Hall built in College Avenue, we are also into the next phase of the Parkinson District Pool. The Parkinson District Pool will be located at 751 Algester Rd, Parkinson and will include a heated 50 metre eight lane outdoor pool, a 25 metre indoor pool, changerooms, kiosk, and carparking. As there are approximately 12,000 students living and attending school in Parkinson Ward, the new pool will be a great asset for our local community, especially for such events as school swimming carnivals. On 18 August, work commenced on repairing the Forest Lake District Junior Sporting Facility to rectify the damage caused by the arson attack. It is anticipated the work will continue until approximately the end of September (weather permitting). During the repairs, the site will be classified as a construction zone and no entry onto the site is permitted. Work will be undertaken in accordance with times permitted under Council by-laws and I expect to see the facility looking as good as new and being able to function in time for the start of Little Athletics season. I am pleased to have once again provided funding through the Parkinson Ward Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund to support the Forest Lake State School fete on 13 September. I encourage residents to get behind our local schools when they hold these events because the funds go into long term improvements for our students. Congratulations on the 3rd Birthday to Forest Lake National Seniors Group. It is wonderful to see many people prepared to be involved in community groups and most importantly to those who accepted positions on the committee a big thank you for volunteering and leading this organisation. I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents to be aware of cybersafety and to educate your children on how to avoid cyberbullying and identity theft. It is important for all parents to also be aware of how to help protect children from online threats and information is available at www.thinkuknow.org.au For those residents who enjoy running, PARKRUN is coming to Parkinson Ward in October – more details will be available in my column next month.
