Child safety message shared at Brigidine

Bruce and Denise Morcombe with members of the Brigidine College Spirit Squad.

MOTHERS

TRIBUTE SERVICE Friday 8th May, 2015 at 6.00pm Federation Chapel

Centenary Memorial Gardens rsvp : 6th May, 2015 A special guest speaker will bring an inspiring and uplifting message themed

‘The depth of a mothers love!’

Staff and students at Brigidine College Indooroopilly joined with Bruce and Denise Morcombe recently to spread the important message of child safety. “With the Year 7s coming to high school for the first time in 2015, it is timely to reinforce the Morcombe Foundation message of ‘Recognize, React and Respond’ to all students,” Mr Cahill, Brigidine College Principal, said. Bruce and Denise spoke to the whole school assembly of around 800. College Captain, Olivia Fidler said, “It was amazing to welcome the Morcombes after having seen them on TV so many times. They are such an inspiration.” Afterwards, a donation of $1192.40 was made to the Danielle Morcombe Foundation from just one day of fundraising at the College. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation (DMF) is committed to Keeping Kids Safe. It was established by parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe in 2005 after their son Daniel was abducted and murdered in December 2003 while waiting to catch a bus on the Sunshine Coast. The Foundation was established as a lasting legacy to Daniel and now has two main aims; to educate children on how to stay safe in a physical and online environment and to support young victims of crime. The Foundation assists educators about personal safety. Education is the key; red is the colour! Brigidine College was RED-dy and willing to join forces with the Morcombes to keep our children safe. Brigidine College has a strong focus on student wellbeing and raising awareness about important social issues. In this spirit, the College has been an annual supporter of Daniel Morcombe Day through the College Spirit Squad.

Personally Speaking Is your child falling behind? with Susannah Friis I’ve been thinking a lot about noise lately. Noise has the ability to calm by way of relaxing music or a soothing voice; it can startle eg a loud unexpected bang; it can irritate like a barking dog or dripping tap. Our relationship with noise is dependent on our mood usually. I have memories of my mother saying, usually towards the end of the long Christmas school holidays, that she just needed some ‘quiet’, and now I find myself saying a similar thing! It was interesting to note that the dictionary definition of noise included this: Informal. extraneous, irrelevant, or meaningless facts, information, statistics, etc. There is so much more of this type of noise these days, isn’t there? I find increasingly that when I feel I need some quiet, I’m hankering to escape the ‘noise’ of the world; to take myself off where there is no internet connection and no traffic or people. We are bombarded with noise now. Our inboxes are filled with ‘noise’ - extraneous, irrelevant, meaningless facts and information. Our social media sites, as well as giving us updates on our friends, also deals out an unhealthy amount of noise. And, for me, anyway, that noise can be so loud that it drowns out the noise we do want to hear. We get so used to the white noise filling our heads that we miss out on other important sounds. We miss the sound of a friend, desperate for connection because we end up skimming our facebook newsfeed due to all the other noise. We miss the sound of our children, begging us to play, to notice them, to really see them, in the midst of our phones pinging and beeping with emails and text messages. And we miss the sound of our own souls screaming for attention in a world noisy with spiritual options, self-help mantras and conflicting dogma. We are so overcome with noise that we miss the most important sounds of all. It’s a challenge to listen when so much noise surrounds us. It’s hard to decipher the sounds we should listen to and the sounds we should ignore. But, it is possible. It just may take some decision making, followed up with some discipline. At the beginning of the year, I ‘unsubscribed’ from many newsletters, blogs and websites. There was nothing wrong, per se, with those things, it was simply too much noise. And you know what, I haven’t missed them! Not one bit. In fact, it’s been quite the opposite. I can feel myself mentally exhaling in relief that my inbox is now uncluttered and ‘less’ than it used to be. And that’s just a start. I’ve been paring down in other ways too - picking my phone up less, turning the TV on less, checking facebook less. As a result, I’m thinking more, connecting more, reading more - enjoying more! That old maxim really is true - less is more. Is there too much noise in your life? What sounds are you missing out on because of it? Maybe it’s time to start tuning in to what really matters and tuning out the rest.

Easter and Autumn Easter is early this year and Easter means that there is a lot of chocolate around the house. I need to put out a timely reminder that chocolate is not good for dogs. Remember to keep your chocolate Easter eggs safely out of your pets reach. The reason for this is that chocolate contains theobromide, which is a caffeine–like substance and it acts as a stimulant for the dogs system which can cause some symptoms including vomiting , diarrhoea, hyper-excitability seizures and renal and heart problems. It is a real danger especially around this time of year. It has been an incredibly long, hot summer with plenty of rain and humidity and this weather can cause skin problems. If you have noticed your dog has reddened or inflamed skin over the summer or is scratching and itchy, it may be due to skin allergies. Dogs can become allergic to all sorts of things e.g. food, pollens, grasses, dust mites, fleas, mites, moulds. There are skin tests that can be used on your dog to find out what they are allergic to and this can lead to a more specific treatment program. Dogs that are affected by allergies can show symptoms at a certain time of year or itchiness is present all year. If they are itchy and rub and lick and scratch themselves then the trauma to the skin can develop into infections. Allergies involve an extensive diagnostic work up and your vet will ask you a lot of questions including how long it has been going on, what flea treatment you are using, what food is your dog on. There are a lot of treatment options for itchy skin so talk to your vet. The weather should start to cool down a bit now and it is a good time to look at the toll summer has taken on your pet. Ticks can still be around at this time of year if it is warm and we get some rain. So be vigilant with your tick treatment and check your pet. The best tick prevention protection includes preventative products that come in the form of once a month edible chews, topical application on your dogs skin every two weeks, tick collars, rinses. So talk to your vet about the best protection. Fleas are still around and breeding as we move into cooler weather so it is important to keep up with your flea prevention program and keep your dog clean and washed. The final check list for these cooler months should include intestinal worming for your dog and cat at this time of year. Remember around 80% of dogs and 75% of cats carry intestinal worms. This is not surprising considering that some worms can produce thousands of eggs a day, and some eggs can survive on the ground for long periods especially in warmer weather. The tapeworm lifecycle goes through the flea, so worming against tapeworms for dogs and cats is useful now. The best thing to do is worm your pet regularly either monthly or every three months according to your vet’s advice and recommendation for the best products.

Hello again from Corinda National Seniors. We celebrated our 25th birthday on the 10th March and a lovely cake was cut by long time members Bob and Heather Silver. Our speakers for the day were Lyn and John from Home Assist. They demonstrated some really helpful aids to safe and easier living. There were four visitors from Calamvale Club, which added to the pleasure of the morning. It is always good to have contact with other clubs. We are taking a trip to Walkabout Creek Nature Reserve; only a small bus as our numbers are too few for the larger busses. We hope to see new faces at our April 14th meeting. The Mad Hatters are performing, there will be a lucky door prize, a raffle and a special morning tea. Please find us at The Western Districts Sports and Community Club on the corner of Queenscroft Street and Oxley Road Chelmer. For further information ring Louise on 3379 8315 or Ruby on 3719 5347.

The inaugural Oxley Community Festival has happened and what an amazing event it was! Festival co-ordinator Lauren Jarvis said, “A big thank you to our sponsors for the day, National Storage – Oxley, Milton Dick, Tarnya Smith, Nanette Lilley, I Feel Good 24/7 Oxley, Bendigo Bank and Jetts Fitness – Darra. “Despite being washed out early, the day was a success with over $8,000 being raised towards sun shelters for the playgrounds within the school. The day wouldn’t have been able to happen without our sponsors as well as the market stall holders, the Oxley State School Administration team and the Oxley Community. “The performances by all the students on the day were enjoyed by one and all as were the rides and gorgeous food. “And a big thank you to everyone who helped organise, advertised, donated and attended the event. What a privilege it is to live in such a brilliant community that is Oxley.”

During March St John’s staff and students, in partnership with Queensland University of Technology, invited students from high schools in the community to a STEM Event. The Event was held in the St John’s Auditorium. It welcomed over 90 high achieving Year 10 and 11 students. The students were able to experience some of the challenges engineers face in their work and to hear from the Director of a top Australian engineering firm. QUT student ambassadors, under the direction of the QUT STIMulate Coordinator Mr Ian Lightbody, conducted interactive workshops for the students. One was the Marshmallow Challenge where teams of students competed to build the highest structure out of spaghetti and string, to support a marshmallow. Another was the LittleBits Electronics workshop where the students were challenged to build an electronic system that is based on an animal adaptation in nature, then present their ideas to the rest of the workshop. There were several imaginative creations based on rattlesnakes and fireflies.

St John’s staff and students were extremely excited to share this opportunity with other students in the community and student visitors were very positive with their feedback after their St John’s STEM experience. In other exciting news, three Year 10 St John’s science students have won a competition through the Conrad Foundation which has now extended an invitation to participate in an additional competition at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA. The students will be able to further develop their winning entry (an environmentally friendly insect deterrent to protect crops) with leading engineers, scientists and business leaders. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to extend their critical thinking skills. This competition is partnered with NASA and Lockheed Martin, and promotes creative solutions to world problems. We wish the team success in the United States! To find out how a St John’s education will take your child into the future, please contact our Registrar, Janette Collins email jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au Kind regards Suzanne Bain Head, St John’s Anglican College

Guest Speaker at the Event, Mr Peter Nikoloff, Executive Director of Nova Systems, spoke about the amazing opportunities for Science and Engineering graduates in the Defence Industry in Australia. Mr Nikoloff and his team set up an interactive display featuring the latest in Virtual Reality technology simulating flying an aircraft.

Friends of Sherwood arboretum by Andrew Benison

- Brisbane’s living treasure -

Smiles all round at the Aboretum’s 90th anniversary celebrations It was easy to spot the smile on the face of one of Australia’s foremost authorities on trees, great and small, last month. Mr Ross McKinnon, Curator of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha for 31 years, was a special guest at the 90th anniversary of Sherwood Arboretum on Saturday 21 March. It’s no surprise that the Arboretum, with its wonderful combination of trees, wetlands, river views, bird-life and an historic avenue planted by Brisbane citizens in 1925, has a loyal ‘fan club’. Many residents, and also families, connected with the early days of this heritage-listed Arboretum, certainly hold that view and turned up to celebrate this landmark anniversary. Mr McKinnon spoke with both pride and knowledge about the Arboretum‘s important collection of more than 1000 Australian native specimen trees. Later, Mr McKinnon joined the Lord Mayor, Cr Graham Quirk and Cr Matthew Bourke, Council’s Chairman of Environment, Parks and Sustainability, to officially plant the missing Queensland Kauri, tree number 71, in the impressive Kauri avenue. The avenue is looking its best thanks to the recent work of Council’s arborists to replace five Kauri trees along a section adversely affected by the high water table. Mr Dale Arvidsson, the new Curator of both the Brisbane and City Botanic Gardens, was among the many guests, including the National Trust of Queensland, the Society for Growing Australian Plants, the Queensland Naturalists Club and the Institute of Foresters of Australia. The Sherwood Scout Group, with the help of Peter and Robyn Jones, formed a guard of honour, similar to the 1925 ceremony, for the Lord Mayor and also helped guests plant trees in the 90th anniversary grove. Mrs Margaret Hughes and Mrs Betty Rowles, the younger daughters of Council’s first Arboretum caretaker, Mr William Hodgson, joined the special guests, Mrs Yvonne Herbert, Mrs Alison Arvier, Dr Glenise Berry, Mrs Corinne Berry and Mr Roger Hartigan in planting trees in the grove. Mrs Ann Neale of Canberra, the younger daughter of Romeo Lahey, founding president of the National Parks Association of Queensland, and Mrs Jill Power of Sydney, granddaughter of Francis Octavius Nixon, a driving force behind the Arboretum’s creation, planted trees in the grove. It was little wonder that the Oxley-Chelmer History Group were kept busy gathering information from guests for our current project, the Sherwood Arboretum website. Mr Brian McMillan, founder of the Sherwood Forest Runners, which staged the popular Junior Fun Run event before the anniversary ceremony, also joined the 15 grove planters.

Through the blog, police officers are able to share tips for crime prevention, personal safety and keeping property secure; and display comfit images or stills from CCTV highlighting people of interest at a local level. They feature an online reporting function, interactive crime mapping and statistics. In the event of a disaster, crucial information for residents and visitors including updates on road closures, and weather conditions will be posted. Get on board with Buy Smart Local students are encouraged to get creative and submit an entry in the Queensland Government’s 2015 Buy Smart competition for a chance to win $1500 for their school. The annual competition for students in years four to 12 invites them to research a consumer issue and present it to their peers in the most creative way possible. In previous years, rap songs, posters, short films and drama presentations were submitted as part of the competition. This competition is a great way for children to learn about the marketplace, while also giving them creative freedom to have a bit of fun with their friends expressing what they have learnt. Students can enter individually or in groups of up to six through their school, community group, or other organisation. The 2015 competition closes on 18 September. Sherwood Probus Club UPDATE *A 8)5 ,)4The theatre group is spoilt for choice this year and members are looking forward to enjoying the musicals Anything Goes, Dirty Dancing, Strictly Ballroom and the Glenn Miller Orchestra featuring America’s finest musicians paying tribute to the spirit of ANZAC in this anniversary year. Our speaker for April will be a representative from Red Cross who will speak about basic first aid. May’s speaker is Michael Beatty who will talk about his former career as a TV reporter and his current involvement with the RSPCA. The dinner group is in abeyance for the time being due to illness of the convenor. It is hoped that this wonderful opportunity to enjoy a great night out will continue in future months. Scrabble continues to be played at a nearby club where newcomers are welcomed and taught the rules of the game. On the first Wednesday in April the garden group will be meeting at a member’s home at Chelmer. There will be a tour of their lovely garden followed by morning tea and group members exchanging plants and cuttings. The lunch group meets on the second Wednesday of the month at a local Golf Club where they espouse the Probus slogan of Fun, Fellowship and Friendship. The book group continues to meet at a member’s home on the last Friday of the month. Due to difficulties in obtaining enough copies of suggested books from the City Council libraries; members will be discussing a book that they have read recently. Probus is a community service activity of Rotary Clubs. Clubs are non-profit making and non-fundraising. It is now a world wide movement in 22 countries. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Oxley-Chelmer History Group Update by Marion Mackenzie

The end of an era of care at Corinda Demolition of all buildings and re-development is under way at the site recently known as Montrose Access, Consort Street, Corinda. The 3.7 hectare site is to be sub-divided into 35 residential lots, and incorporate a small park on the corner of Consort and Keble Streets, and a riverside park of approximately one hectare. This site was favoured by aboriginal hunter gatherers as the echidnas seemed to thrive in the sandy red soil. The first European person to occupy the site was pioneering farmer William Gray, in 1862. Gray emigrated on the vessel Prince Consort and he named the locality Consort Cliff. William Gray was of great assistance to all his neighbours in the following years. He was variously called Reverend, Doctor or Mister, as he had high Christian principles, a sound medical knowledge and legal expertise. William Gray initiated Protestant church services on his site, and also preached at the Oxley multi-denominational church. Gray sold the property to Union Bank Manager, Charles Collins, who built a gentleman’s residence, which he called Ardoyne after his previous home in Wicklow, Ireland. The house had quality finishes and the entry had very extensive leadlight, as did the French doors opening out to the verandahs. The next owner was a bachelor, A G C Hawthorne, who was followed by Mr and Mrs Alexander Smith-Leslie. Other residents were J Brownlie-Henderson and family, John Watts Snr and Jnr, and the Reverend Leslie P Copeland. Following WWI, Ardoyne, and its nine and a half acre gardens, was purchased by the Queensland branch of the Red Cross Society, for use as a convalescent hospital to care for returning servicemen suffering war injuries and tuberculosis, officially opening on Armistice Day, 1920. Ardoyne Hospital facilities included a barber shop and two berth morgue. Occupational therapy was part of the hospital’s function, and the RSL controlled operations for some time. In January 1938 the generous benefactor George Marchant arranged to move 55 children from Montrose Disabled Children’s’ Home at Taringa to the Corinda site. The remaining soldiers transferred to Taringa, which then became called Kingsholme. Montrose became a centre for disabled children run by the Society for Crippled Children. Many individuals and institutions supported Montrose over the following decades, with the institutional care on site giving way to the more recent MontroseAccess mobile activities. The only remaining links from this past are the panorama from the western frontage, which Scottish immigrant W Gray described in 1862 as being “like the loveliest highland lake scenery”. Also, a large boulder, near the southern boundary of the riverside parkland remains and was claimed by Gray to be an aboriginal burial site.

Chelmer & District

PROBUS CLUBupdate by Coral Rieichman

MEMBERSHIP & PUBLICITY OFFICER

The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members mainly from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. In March, we held our annual AGM when we reflected on the past year and look forward to an exciting year ahead. It is also a very important time of year when all committee members step down and a new committee is formed to lead the Club into the following year. This year our Speakers Officer has made sure we were informed and entertained with a varied selection of speakers. Topics have ranged from a behind the scenes look at putting together an exhibition at the Queensland Museum; all we need to know about our hearing; the wonderful work the RSPCA does each year; to the controversies involving the agricultural and mining industries. We started in our travel talks with some tips on ‘Travel for Seniors’ and then we were taken on journeys from above the Arctic Circle in an ice tent viewing the Northern Lights, to places in between and to getting up close and personal with the penguins in Antartica. And we all enjoyed another very successful year of outings which ranged from a guided tour of the Walter Taylor Bridge pylon with Brisbane Greeters to celebrating Queensland Day with a walk at the Oxley Creek Common, followed by a BBQ breakfast using the wonderful facilities there (which we hope to repeat again this year), to a Riverside cruise with commentary to Newstead House. Our next meeting will be an interesting trip down the years and into the future of our very own local ‘Regal Twin Art House Cinemas’. We are all looking forward to this talk as we all have fond memories of the Regal and all appreciate the quality entertainment provided on our very doorstep. Graceville Community Garden Update

by John Fitz-Walter

As you drive, walk or cycle away from the city along Oxley Road, opposite the Graceville Memorial Cricket Ground and next to the Graceville State School, you will see a sign directing you along Acacia Avenue towards the Brisbane River and to the Community Garden, the Graceville Community Garden. Can you name a commercial Australian native plant? Macadamias have been the only commercially developed and grown food known worldwide however in Hawaii they are known as Hawaii nuts! I suppose this is a bit like Kiwi fruit that originated in northern China which were known as the Chinese Gooseberry. For thousands of years Aboriginal people lived off this land, eating well when food was plentiful and conserving in times of drought. Bush tucker or bush food is Australia’s native food. Graceville Community Gardens has planted many species of bush tucker in a special area where visitors and gardeners can discover and learn much of what was never known to us. Today bushfood is modern, contemporary and fun and can be incorporated into all your favourite recipes. All roads lead to Rome but We are interested in having others in our community assist with the development of this area so if you or a friend wish to know more please contact Benarrawa on 3379 this one leads you to Graceville Community Gardens! 9925 or email John Maume at benarrawaprojects@westnet.com.au to have a chat. The Southside Nature Babes is now known as the Nature Babes of Benarrawa. This is an active group of young children and carers who meet every Wednesday from 9 to 11am at Benarrawa and The Graceville Community Gardens to explore nature, friendship and to have much fun. For further information please contact Jenna McDonald at benarrawaprojects@westnet.com.au or on 3379 9925 and have a chat. Tim Auld, the GCG president, is continuing to develop our raised bed area. This year we look forward to much more locally produced honey that can be shared around our local community and is available at Benarrawa Community Development Centre. Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, at the corner of Waratah Ave & Cordalba St, Graceville. Everyone is invited to be part of the regular working bee followed by morning tea from 7am to 10am each Sunday. All are welcome.

SHERWOOD / INDOOROOPILLY LY RSL Sub-Branch Update by Kevin Alcock ock k

ANZAC Day preparations underway As this year is the Centenary of the ANZAC Landings, the Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL Sub-branch is determined to make this year’s services special. The Dawn Service traditionally attracts the largest attendance, so the Sub-branch has made a special effort to address issues of sound levels and visibility. This year we will have a stage erected over the existing podium in front of the Croll Memorial Wall, which will ensure that all attending will have a better view of the proceedings. In past years some in the audience have had difficulty hearing the speakers, so we will have additional speakers installed and we will have the services of a professional sound engineer operating from the Service Club balcony. This year we will have the Brisbane Municipal Concert Band also on the Service Club balcony together with the singers who will be singing both the New Zealand and the Australian National Anthems. Veterans and members of the public who wish to march are asked to assemble in front of the Croll Memorial Precinct opposite the Sherwood Services Club at the corner of Browne and Clewley Streets Corinda at 4.50 a.m. and the march will commence at 5.00 am. The service will commence at 5.15 a.m. At the conclusion of the service, breakfast will be served at the Sherwood Services Club. Other services will be held at the Boer War Memorial at the Sherwood Cemetery at 6.25 am, and the Graceville service will see the marchers assemble in Appel Street in front of the Graceville Railway Station at 7.00 am, to march off at 7.15 am. The service in the Graceville Memorial Park will commence at 7.30 am. The Indooroopilly Service will see those marching assemble at the corner of Stamford and Belgrave Roads at 7.10 am marching to Keating Park at 7.20 am, where the service will commence at 7.30 am. You will note that these timings are 30 minutes earlier than in past years. This is due to the City march having been brought forward by a similar amount. The Service in Bannerman Park Oxley will, however, be held at its usual time. Here marchers will assemble at the shopping centre at the corner of Bayford Street and Oxley Road at 10.00 am, stepping off at 10.15 am marching to Bannerman Park, where the service will commence at 10.30 am. We look forward to seeing as many as possible attend our services as this year we commemorate the landings at ANZAC Cove 100 years ago.

VIEW clubs celebrate 55 years of community service VIEW Clubs of Australia is marking its 55th anniversary in 2015, and VIEW Club members are using the anniversary celebration as an opportunity to extend an invitation to any local women keen to meet new people and forge new interests in the New Year. VIEW stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women and was established by children’s charity The Smith Family to offer women the opportunity to have their voices heard on issues of national interest and provide a service to the community. Over 55 years it has grown to become one of Australia’s leading women’s volunteer organisations, supporting the education of disadvantaged children through The Smith Family’s educational support programs. Fifty-five years ago women were discouraged from speaking their minds and pursuing business and community interests but VIEW offers members the chance to do exactly that, in addition to pursuing a raft of leadership, fundraising and volunteer opportunities through the organisation. VIEW members come from all walks of life and the 350 clubs have spread throughout Australia since 1960 into every state and territory. Clubs meet regularly to provide members with an outlet to help others, as well as establish lasting friendships and contribute to the local community. VIEW supports The Smith Family so that young Australians in need can get the most out of their education and create better futures for themselves. In addition to raising awareness and fundraising, VIEW members can volunteer their time and talents in a number of ways. Members can read with local children to advance their literacy skills; help children with homework after school at Smith Family Learning Clubs; act as mentors for students; make library bags; donate school stationery packs for use at home and school and donate funds for toys and books for children in need at Christmas time. Clubs are always looking for women from all backgrounds and ages to join. It is vitally important that memberships continues to grow, so that the volunteer work with The Smith Family and local children and families support can continue. To find out more about VIEW visit the website at www.view.org.au or call 1800 805 366. Page 12 - April 2015 - The Local News
