The Brisbane Taylor Bridge Rotary Club has had a busy few weeks. Last month, Ted Crowe became the new President of the two year old club when former President Stephen Ganko stood down at the end of his term. A Gala Dinner was held at Boulevard Gardens to celebrate the changeover and to present Sailability Graceville with a $12 000 cheque. Over seventy guests were present at the dinner and everyone was overjoyed that Sailability would be able to purchase three new boats for their disabled sailors. Every Tuesday the Brisbane Taylor Bridge Rotary Club and Sailability Graceville host a morning of sailing for children and adults who would normally be unable to participate in sailing activities. At their monthly dinner meeting, Ted Crowe inducted and warmly welcomed Cameron Crouch and Aimee Carding into the Club. If you’d like to find out more, please contact Sue by sending an email to susanrichmond@bigpond.com.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis

I

’ve spent a good amount of my life feeling like I didn’t ‘fit in’. I was never popular, never cool, not particularly sporty, and definitely not smart enough to hang with the ‘nerds’. There just was not a group where I could look around and say to myself, ‘yes, these are my people!’. The result is that once I hit about 30, I realised I didn’t care and that the sound of my own drum resonated with me, even if it didn’t for anyone else. And that was liberating. Since coming back from Thailand a year and a half ago, that feeling has slowly but steadily been creeping back but with a different slant. I look around at all I have, at all we have, in the Western world and wonder why I’m here. Why do I get to have running water, electricity, the right to vote, the ability to receive an education and find gainful employment? Why me? Contentment is the art of being at peace no matter our circumstances. And we generally take that to mean being content when we have less than we want or when we are going through difficulties. Sometimes, it’s hard to be content when things are going well and we have no problems, especially when we read or watch the news, or when friends and family are doing it tough. It’s hard to be content with all the plenty we have, in the face of so many who have so little. I find it’s a constant challenge, not to be grateful, but to be okay with all we have. While at the beach on our recent holiday, I came across a weed growing out of the rocks. It was flowering with pretty daisy-like yellow flowers. The yellow was such an unexpected bright spot against the rocks and the words ‘grow where you’re planted’ popped into my mind. It’s tempting to think we have been planted in the wrong spot. It’s tempting to uproot ourselves and go where we think we will be best suited. We’re not content with just growing where we are. We’re always on the lookout for a climate that we think will encourage more growth, where our true potential will be maximised. It’s tempting to think my life would be better spent being in Thailand working with the rescued girls. It’s tempting to think I am wasting it, here in the land of plenty. And sometimes we’re right. Sometimes we need to pick up and move halfway across the world to make a difference. And sometimes, it’s not. By speaking and writing about what is happening to these girls, I could be making more of an impact than if I were there physically. It’s important to remember that we are where we are for a reason. We may never really understand that reason but until we fully embrace our surroundings, we won’t grow or bloom. Maybe you are where you are simply to provide that bright spot among the blacks and browns in someone else’s landscape.

Sherwood / Indooroopilly RSL Sub-Branch Update

by Kevin Alcock

When Australian troops departed the base at Tarin Kowt, the large memorial wall that had been erected, and which listed the names of those American, Dutch and Australian servicemen who lost their lives in Uruzgan Province Afghanistan, had to be demolished lest it be used at some later date by a resurgent Taliban force, for purposes of propaganda. The Australian troops did have strong feelings about the demolition of that wall where they had, on too many occasions, conducted memorial services to fallen comrades. The families of our fallen had the opportunity to be present before the wall came down, and were later presented with their own piece of that wall. The Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL Sub-branch last year was involved in assisting the mother of Private Tim Aplin in having a memorial to Tim erected and dedicated at Keating Park, Indooroopilly. It was subsequent to this that it was obvious to us that it was important for the families of the fallen that their memory be preserved. We then decided to commission a bronze rendition of the Tarin Kowt Wall and locate it at our Sub-branch in Corinda. On Saturday the 16th of August, at 10.45 am, this memorial will be unveiled and dedicated by MajorGeneral John Cantwell AO,DSC (Rtd), a former Commander in Afghanistan, at the Croll Memorial Wall at the Sub-branch at Clewley Street, Corinda. An Honour Guard will be provided by the soldiers of the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment, who will also provide a Catafalque Party. The Army Band will be present. The Flags of Australia, The United States and the Netherlands will be flown and the three national anthems will be played at the conclusion of the service. Present will also be representatives from other units, family members of the Australian Fallen, together with representatives from the US and the Netherlands together with members of their ex-service communities. We at Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL Sub-branch want today’s servicemen and servicewomen to know that their service and sacrifice has been acknowledged and given the honour it deserves. Lest we forget.

Milton Dick Councillor for Richlands Ward Inala Library, Civic Centre, Corsair Avenue, Inala.

St Aidan’s School Captain, Libby Jacques, has made her mark on the international stage, winning the Under 20 10,000m in a new Oceania Record time at the Oceania Area Athletics Championships held in Rorotonga, Cook Islands in June. Libby, who also competed in the Under 20 1500m and came fourth, was one of 59 athletes selected by Athletics Australia to complete for her country at the championships. The championships featured athletes from across Australia’s IAAF region for three days of competition to determine the Oceania champions for 2014. This is not the first time Libby has been selected to represent Australia - having recently competed for Australia at the International School Sport Federation’s World Cross Country Championships in Israel in March, where she returned with a sensational top ten finish in 6th place. Last year, Libby broke the 16 year 1500m QGSSSA record by four seconds, competed in the Australian All Schools Championships and received a bronze for both 1500m and 3000m, and is an Athletics Australia Target Talent Program Athlete. Libby was also recently recognised for her sporting achievement and leadership with the Australian Olympic Council’s coveted Pierre de Coubertin Awards which was presented in July.

$160,000 State funding boost for local community groups. Hardworking community organisations in the Mount Ommaney electorate are set for a mid-year funding treat as they receive their share in a pool of over $12.6 million in the latest round of State Government Community Grants. This welcome funding boost is delivered four times a year to dozens of charities and not-for profit groups through the Community Benefit Fund programs, to ensure they can continue their invaluable work within their community. The grants were a financial injection many groups could not afford to miss out on and allowed dedicated volunteers to focus on continuing their good work or providing better facilities and equipment. Whether it’s our local sporting groups, wildlife conservation societies or our brave firefighters, these groups play a huge role in our communities and need our support. Successful organisations within the Mount Ommaney electorate were: • $31,818 for Darra Cementco Bowls Club to upgrade unsafe flooring; • $31,818 for Wesley Mission Brisbane towards carer support programs; • $72,662 for Montrose Access to install an integrated call system and purchase a powered hoist; • $25,454 for Miraa House to upgrade general facilities.

Sherwood Probus Club UPDATE BY PAM DALE Sherwood Probus Club members enjoyed a wonderful d ay a t t h e P r o b u s Fe l l o w s h i p D ay a t S a m f o r d Showgrounds in late July. Probus clubs from all over south-east Queensland gathered together to enjoy fun, friendship and fellowship. Our members each brought some food to share with our table. Cold meats, chicken, zucchini slice, various salads made for a great feast. The theme was country with entertainment by Redlands Modern Country Music Club and the Probus Choir. Prizes were awarded for the best ‘Theme Dressed’ lady and gent. A great day was had by all participants. Members are being encouraged to clear out their bookshelves in August for our annual Bookfest in October. We bring along any unwanted books, DVDs, and CDs to share at no cost. All left-overs are donated to local charities. As there are so many activities already planned for August, the dinner group will organise something later. The lunch group still meets at a local golf club for their lunches on the second Wednesday of the month. The garden group meeting was at a member’s home with a lovely morning tea provided. Some members visited the garden of a well known television personality who is in the open garden scheme. The scrabble group continues to meet every second week amid much fun and laughter. Newcomers welcome and will be taught the rules of the game. As it is five years since the inception of the book group, they will be celebrating with a lunch at a local restaurant. There is no selection for this month. Mah Jong is still being played each Thursday at our meeting venue. Convivial company adds to the enjoyment of the game. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club. Friends of Sherwood arboretum by Andrew Benison

- Brisbane’s living treasure -

There’s nothing quite like the winning combination of a shady tree and your favourite book as a great way to relax. So, after 31 years in the demanding job of Curator-in-Charge at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mr Ross McKinnon AM (pictured) couldn’t be blamed for seeking out one of his favourite books, the ‘Domesday Book’. No, it’s not a Gothic novel but it is the little-known record of 100 Brisbane school students who planted trees in Sherwood Arboretum 89 years ago this month. In 1925, the students of the then Sherwood Public School also did much more by starting a long tradition of voluntary work to improve the Arboretum over the many years to come. The curiously named book, recording the Arboretum’s official and student tree planters, was kept safely at the Curator’s Mount Coot-tha office until his retirement last month. “The good work of those students represents one of the enduring strengths of both the Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Sherwood Arboretum,” he said. “Our volunteers really make such a difference when it comes to running a sub-tropical Botanic Gardens or an Arboretum dedicated to Australian native trees.” An earlier Botanic Gardens Curator, Mr Ernest Bick was one of the driving forces behind the creation of Sherwood Arboretum, which Mr McKinnon said was well ahead of its time in focusing solely on Australian native trees in the 1920s. Mr McKinnon last month accepted the first Honorary Life Membership of the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association in recognition of the support and advice he has given the Arboretum over many years. The records of Mr McKinnon’s pioneering work, establishing the Brisbane Botanic Gardens from a paddock to today’s world-class gardens, will be safely preserved by the Brisbane City Council’s Museum of Brisbane. Along with those records will be the neatly penned pages of another title, the ‘Domesday Book’. The Local News - August 2014 - Page 7

Education Accord

The Education Accord is the state government’s latest initiative to develop a 30 year plan for the future of education in Queensland. The accord will determine priorities for our schools and ensure our future generations of students are given the best possible education and job opportunities. I am pleased to announce that Dr Angela Douglas, Principal Ironside State School; Mr David Gowdie, President Sherwood State School Parents and Citizens Association; and Mr Kevin Ward, teacher Indooroopilly State High School, will represent the Indooroopilly electorate at the Education Accord Summit on 25 September. Seven key priorities have been developed to facilitate discussion and capture the diverse opinions of Queenslanders. Feedback from these questions will be extensively reviewed and will shape the content of the Queensland Education Accord. You can submit your feedback online, to the delegates or my electorate office. For more information on the Education Accord and to view the seven key priorities visit www.dete.qld.gov.au/educationaccord.

Graceville State School Parents and Citizens Association to tackle road safety issues

Families in Graceville will be safer thanks to a $22,727.27 boost to deliver a collaborative road safety initiative as part of the state government’s Community Road Safety Grants. Graceville State School P&C is the successful recipient with their initiative which will help promote road safety by widening the existing gates on the Oxley Road off-street parking area at the school. Making our roads safer is a whole-of-community effort and is part of our stronger plan for a brighter future. The Community Road Safety Grants program has awarded almost $2 million to organisations across the state after two funding rounds. These grants assist local groups who have considerable insight into both the background to local road safety problems and what type of solutions will work best for their community members. Applications for third round funding will close on 22 August. More information is available at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/roadsafetygrants.

State Netball Challenge Carnival at Graceville

I was pleased to have been invited to open the 2014 Netball Queensland Challenge Carnival at Western Districts Netball Association’s Graceville courts last month. The carnival is an annual event bringing together more than 1700 netballers between the ages of 12 and 16 from across the state. Western District’s eight new courts, constructed with funding assistance from the state government’s Get in the Game program, were put to good use over the three day weekend. Congratulations must go to Western Districts for hosting this fantastic event and providing world class facilities to benefit netballers in the electorate.

Graceville Community Garden Update

by John Fitz-Walter

Graceville Community Gardens had a stall at this year’s Peaks to Point Festival at the Oxley Creek Commons located near the Oxley Creek and the Brisbane Markets. Leaflets were available on the Gardens and the Benarrawa Community Development Association located next to the gardens. A compost sample and wormery provided some interest as did a photographic display that enabled visitors to see some of the activities at the gardens. Children had the chance to name three of the fruit and vegetables displayed on the stall table and if correct they were rewarded with a herb seedling to take home. However, the big hit was the ability to taste some of the Graceville Community Garden’s renowned honey. Everyone agreed that it was the best honey they had tasted, including our Brisbane Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk. The Lord Mayor was thanked for the support that the Brisbane Council offers Community Gardens. What vegetables to plant now - kohl rabi, lettuce, radish, beetroot, carrot, capsicum, celery, cucumber, eggplant, French beans, okra, potatoes, pumpkin, silver beet, spring The Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk sampled some of the onion, squash, sweet potato, tomato and zucchini. Happy Graceville Community Gardens famous honey. gardening, it is not long now until Spring. A children’s garden playgroup, Southside Nature Babes are intending to meet at the garden on a weekday morning from 9am to 11am, for more information contact Jenna or John at Benarrawa on 3379 9925. The Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, at the corner of Waratah Ave & Cordalba St, Graceville. Look for the ‘Community Garden’ sign on the corner of Oxley Road and Acacia Avenue to assist with directions. Everyone is invited to be part of the regular working bee followed by morning tea from 7am to 10am each Sunday. All are welcome.

PROBUS CLUBupdate by Coral Rieichman

MEMBERSHIP & PUBLICITY OFFICER

The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. At our last meeting, our speaker was Rae Sheridan who told us about the setting up of the Queensland Museum Loans Collection, the largest in the world. Many volunteers played a vital role doing everything from specimen collection and preparation to building collection boxes. The collection has gone from supplying schools and pre-schools locally and throughout the State with much needed resources to The Living Treasures Heritage Collection which goes out to nursing homes. A most valuable resource used by many in the community. At our August meeting, Natasha Scott an audiologist from Australian Hearing in Sherwood will come and tell us all we need to know about protecting our hearing, having a hearing test and how to get the maximum benefit from a hearing aid. We will be all ears! This month we are looking forward to a tour of the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, the largest stand alone planetarium in Australia. We will take a tour of Brisbane’s night sky created in the Cosmic Skydome and also hear about cosmic collisons and the energy released which drives the growth and evolution of the universe, how the Egyptians used the stars to tell the time and whether we are truly alone in space. And of course, we will follow with lunch at the Mt Coot-tha gardens café. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. Hello Readers As we begin Term Four at St John’s we can look back over Semester One and be very pleased with student outcomes and achievements across the full range of our balanced College programs. Highlights of Term Three included our community oriented events in May where Hospitality students catered for over 200 guests and the College Corelli Strings performed at the Mother’s Day High Tea; students joined forces with the very focused and enthusiastic College Carnival Committee to raise funds for College facilities and resources; students performed in choral, band and orchestra ensembles demonstrating a very high level of musicianship at the interstate Combined Music Festival; and students committed themselves to performing well and with excellent sportsmanship in their first ever team sport competition in the Blue Division of TAS Sports. In the Primary school students have also enjoyed a very successful semester, participating in a host of engaging learning activities including academic challenges, performing arts concerts, sporting events, camps and excursions. Unlike other schools, a St John’s education provides a truly enriched experience which develops the whole child and encompasses academic, creative, physical, spiritual and social aspects. These experiences and more ensure our students are provided with the best foundations for future learning. On the world stage, two St John’s athletes will represent our country in the forthcoming Commonwealth and Young Olympic games. Old Collegian, Hannah Joye competing in High Jump in the Commonwealth Games and Year 12 student Trae Williams competing in sprint events at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games in August. As part of our commitment to continuous review and development of our programs, recently, we have engaged with the Confucius Institute at the University of Queensland in order to provide our students with the opportunity to develop deeper understanding of Chinese culture and language. This alliance will provide us with resources and opportunities for in country teacher professional development. This additional support for the teaching of the Chinese language fits with the expanded opportunities for students to study an additional language in the secondary school through our Language Hub. Please visit St John’s at our next Open Day and experience the St John’s spirit first hand.

Pet dental health month

As pet owners, we all know that dental care is very important for our pets. Current research shows that at least 85% of dogs over three years show some signs of dental disease. This can range from tartar and plaque, staining and build up on the teeth. This causes inflamed, reddened gums. Regular care at home, daily brushing, using oral sprays, products for water, kelp products for the food and feeding special dental diets can help prevent the build up of plaque and tartar which reduces gum disease by as much as 90% and has the added benefit of your dog have better smelling breath. It also helps prevent the need for professional teeth cleaning, and tooth loss that your vet will need to deal with. There are some important contributing factors to dental disease. Periodontal disease is more common in smaller breeds of dogs and some cat breeds. It is more common in older pets and poor oral hygiene and plaque build up can lead to gum disease, tooth loss and other more serious conditions such as heart, liver and kidney disease. The causes of gum disease include plaque which is a film that contains large amounts of bacteria which, if left unchecked, can build up on the teeth, causing infection, ulcers and destroying gums and this results in loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth. As always, prevention is the best cure and can reduce the formation of plaque and help maintain proper oral health throughout your pet’s life. Some signs of gum disease include bad breath, yellow crusting on the teeth, bleeding gums, difficulty eating or a change in eating habits, tooth loss, behavioural changes, salivating and dropping food from their mouths. Your pets teeth can be cleaned by you at home using a pet toothbrush or a spray to use directly on the teeth or a rinse to add to their water bowl. Cleaning your pets teeth and controlling tartar build up by using specific dry food diets is very important. Talk to your vet about the dental food available for your pet. The easiest way to prevent teeth and gum problems is to get their teeth checked regularly at their annual visit to your vet. Start an oral care program at home by brushing their teeth to remove plaque. There are pet toothbrushes available and chicken flavoured toothpaste and mouth washes that can be added to their water bowl. Also there are specially formulated dental dry food available for dogs and cats to help clean their teeth which helps ensure your pet receives good oral care every day. August is Pet Dental Health month, so ask your vet what is the best way to look after your pets teeth. Don’t forget - tick season has started early this year so start checking your pet for ticks and use tick prevention products.
