Visitors to St Peters Lutheran College Chapel at Indooroopilly will discover a feast of music from around the world and across the ages this Christmas. Popular carols from the UK, Germany, Austria, Poland, Scandinavia and Australia will feature at both the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services, accompanied by Gregory Mayer on the newly-reconditioned pipe organ. The St Peters Church Choir will also shine. Young worshippers at the 7pm Christmas Eve Service will recognise Eatnemen Vuelie, the Christmas choral work adapted for use in this year’s hit movie Frozen. On Christmas morning at 9am J.S. Bach’s harmonisation of Now Sing We, Now Rejoice!, as well as his Fugue in G BWV 577 will be part of the Traditional Service with Communion. Entry is via Lambert Road or Lohe Street, Indooroopilly, and visitors are very welcome.
More news from Corinda Branch of the National Seniors. We had a very successful and interesting meeting on 11th November. Mark Furness from the Brisbane office paid us an unexpected visit. He is always welcome with news of other regions and encouraging us to try to increase our membership. A physical trainer from Prescare came along and had us doing gentle exercise to maintain our balance and strength and hopefully we put these into practice at home. Claudia from the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre also came along and gave an account of the services they provide for the community. Our Christmas party is on 9th December. As usual it is catered for by Janelle and we look forward to another of her delicious lunches and a good time will be had by all. But you do need to book if you intend to join the fun! Stay safe and enjoy the festivities of the next few weeks and we shall see you all in the New Year. Find us at the Western District Sports and Community Club, corner of Oxley Rd and Queenscroft St Chelmer. Phone Louise on 3379 8315 for more information.
Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis
Christmas or Xmas? Personally, I really don’t like Xmas; I remember as a child seeing it used for an advertisement and thinking “Cross-mas. That doesn’t make any sense! You’re supposed to be happy not cross at Christmas.” Yes, I was a strange child...and clearly not too bright either! Now, it just annoys me because I generally dislike all abbreviations. Some people get offended, thinking this is another way for society to take the ‘Christ’ out of Christmas, in a season where the meaning is all but obscured by consumerism already. It is not, in fact, a deliberate act to withdraw meaning from the season but the X has it’s origins as an abbreviation for Christ going way back to our Greek friends in days long gone. In advertising, I tend to think it’s a matter of trying to make a longish word fit; and in handwriting, I’m sure it’s because we would all rather be lazy! Neither of which are looking to take the meaning of the word away but are instead, focused on convenience. You see, the only way for meaning to be extracted from something is if the observer or participant allows it to be taken. How the word is written should have no bearing on how we all perceive it, or, for that matter, enjoy and celebrate it. It’s easy not to focus on the real meaning of Christmas at Christmas time. It’s busy. It’s hot. The kids are home on holidays (and are quite possibly bored and exhausting!). A host of family get-togethers are organised. Food needs to be prepared. Presents need to be bought. And on it goes. Yes, it’s very easy to just let the meaning of the whole thing slide right on by without a second glance. Yet, finding a little time to contemplate the ‘reason for the season’ might just help you get through all that busyness with a smile. Acknowledging that it’s a season of peace, of love and giving can stop us in our busyness and give us pause, reminding us that there is more to life than presents, food and endless streams of family and guests. If we do take the time to think about it a little, and allow the real meaning of the baby born in a manger to sink in, we might find that it can impact more than just the Christmas season. We might find that it can make a very real difference to the coming year. It might change us so that our relationships are enriched, our lives are fuller and that longing within all of us to have purpose and meaning is finally fulfilled. Will you pause this Christmas? Will you step aside to ponder and really think about what it all means? I hope you do. And I hope you find peace, love and joy not only this Christmas season, but your whole life long.

Benarrawa CDA Update by Jenna MacDonnell
Communities Development Worker
I n D e c e m b e r, B e n a r r a w a w i l l h o l d i t s f i r s t Management Committee meeting since the 2014 Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM saw the organisation farewell Management Committee President, Melanie Taylor. Staff and Committee members would like to thank Melanie for her longstanding support and commitment to the organisation. Into the position of President, Benarrawa warmly welcomes John FitzWalter, who is well-known to the organisation already through his work with the Graceville Community Garden. Re-elected into the positions of Secretary and Treasurer were Anne Marlay and Charles Topp, respectively. Returning as Committee members are Steven Clark and Christopher Gehrmann. Benarrawa also welcomes to the Committee local resident, Michael O’Connor. Benarrawa CDA will wind down many of its community based initiatives over the Christmas/New Year period. The organisation will be closed from Saturday 20 December through until Sunday 4 January 2015. Most groups and activities will return to their usual schedule in the new year. Regular groups and activities held at Benarrawa CDA and in its garden surrounds include a Community Lunch from noon-2pm on the first Tuesday of every month, Southside Nature Babes Playgroup every Wednesday from 9.30-11.30am, Graceville Community Garden working bees every Sunday from 7am, and Southwest Network of Carers gathering from 10amnoon on the fourth Wednesday of every month. In addition to this, a Women’s Creative Circle currently in its planning phase, is scheduled to begin meeting on a regular basis in February. Benarrawa is also involved in initiatives that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, newly-arrived refugees and migrants, people living with mental health challenges, and individuals and groups impacted by floods and other natural disasters. Please contact John or Jenna at Benarrawa CDA for more information on any of these events and activities. Phone 3379 9925 or email benarrawa@westnet. com.au. Benarrawa CDA is located at 79 Waratah Avenue, Graceville.
Plant a garden, grow a community Chelmer Station Kindy Chelmer Station Community Kindergarten has been generously assisted by Graceville Community Garden and Oxley Men’s Shed to develop four raised organic garden beds in the grounds of the Kindy at 6 Halsbury St, Chelmer. Through funding obtained from a Coles Junior Landcare Grant, Chelmer Station Kindy has been working closely with Oxley Men’s Shed and Graceville Community Garden to engage children, families and community partners in hands-on learning about sustainability, nutrition and building strong community relationships. Oxley Men’s Shed generously provided the labour to construct the wooden garden bed frames and were met with enthusiasm by children, staff and families when they visited Chelmer Station Kindy to install the garden beds and again when they were welcomed back to the kindy to celebrate with all who had helped with the food garden. Graceville Community Garden worked very closely with Chelmer Station Kindy over many months to develop the garden and the budding young gardeners. Engaging children and families over several weeks of planting allowed for more than the development of a food garden. Once the work was done, a chat over a tasty morning tea between kindy parent helpers and Graceville Community Garden volunteers allowed the chance to develop some wonderful community relationships. Chelmer Station Kindy recently held a Community Spring Gardening Day to welcome back all who had contributed to make the children’s food garden a success. The children presented Oxley Men’s Shed and Graceville Community Garden with gifts they had made to thank them for all they had done for the children and families of Chelmer Station Kindy. The Community Spring Gardening Day was also proudly supported by the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund and Tennyson Ward. Families planted a Bush Tucker garden and children danced and played with instruments made from recycled materials. Young and old were captivated by a workshop from Bee One Third about the importance of bees in the growth of food. The afternoon was a wonderful community celebration and what better way to learn that a garden really is more than a garden. For more information about Chelmer Station Kindy or this project please phone 3278 1327.

Sherwood Football Club scores funding to Get Playing Sherwood AFL Football Club will receive $91 803 in Get Playing funding from the state government to upgrade their lighting system at their grounds. Get Playing forms part of the government’s $68 million Get in the Game initiative, and provides sport and recreation clubs with better facilities. Sport and recreation clubs are an integral part of this community and are used by hundreds of children and adults so it’s essential their infrastructure and facilities are modern and safe. Almost $400 000 in Get Playing funding has been awarded to sporting clubs in the Indooroopilly electorate since the 2013 commencement of the Get in the Game initiative and the projects, delivered with this funding, have made a real difference to the community. What’s your ‘what-if’ plan? Are you ready? Do you have your ‘what if plan’? Queenslanders are urged to use their home-grown resilience and ‘get ready’ to face the possibility of wild weather this disaster season. The State Government and RACQ are encouraging residents to think about what could happen if they or their families were struck by wild weather. In recent times, natural disasters have caused havoc across Queensland and it is up to every one of us to have a ‘what-if ’ plan in case disaster strikes. Decide on a meeting point and a close contact if you find yourself caught in a disaster. Prepare your house to be storm and disaster ready and make sure you have enough food and water in your emergency kit to survive at least three days. The Queensland Government has more information to help you and your family prepare at www.getready.qld.gov.au. The Indooroopilly electorate office has a number of Get Ready slap-on USB wristbands available for interested constituents. Economic Participation Grants Program Indooroopilly electorate organisations are encouraged to apply for funding under a million-dollar Queensland Government program for projects to help migrants and refugees get jobs or to start and grow their own businesses. $1.05 million is available under the Economic Participation Grants Program at two levels with organisations able to apply for funding of up to $40,000. Funding for this round has been increased because of the success of the previous round which assisted overseas-born Queenslanders to improve their employment potential through training, networking and the acquisition of basic skills. More information about the Economic Participation Grants Program is available at: www.datsima.qld.gov.au.

Friends of Sherwood arboretum by Andrew Benison

Our wildlife wows the crowd! It’s quite a change to step into the exciting world of Australian wildlife when you’re usually caring for creatures with four paws and waggling tails. However, that’s just what David Stone, the proprietor of Pet Cafe at Corinda, did when he sponsored our wildlife display to promote the Arboretum at the recent Sherwood Festival. Although the Arboretum is a popular destination for dog owners, it’s also the home for an astonishing variety of Australian wildlife of many shapes and sizes. David’s generous support allowed our Association to engage the professional help of Geckoes Wildlife to display an eye-catching variety of creatures from tiny field mice to a large carpet snake at the festival. The show-stopping wildlife display also had a serious side. From slow-moving turtles to nimble-footed bush birds, like the Superb Fairy-Wren, there are many creatures which call the Arboretum home. Working in close partnership with Council’s Habitat Brisbane program, our volunteers are committed to creating a ‘green bridge’ between the Brisbane River and the protected wetlands for the safe movement of wildlife. Our habitat team, which meets for two hours each month, is working on a longterm project to plant along the creek-lines leading to and from the wetlands and the Brisbane River. Creating this ‘habitat-friendly’ environment is just one of the tasks of our volunteers, who are also committed to adding to the collection of more than 1000 Australian specimen trees. On Saturday 21 March 2015, Sherwood Arboretum celebrates its 90th birthday. If you would like to support our work in 2015, even in a small way, please email: info@sherwoodarboretum.com.au or call 3278 6525. FOSA volunteer Liz with Jessica (left) and Ayesha.

Sherwood Probus Club Update
by Pam Dale
Our November outing of a cultural experience tour of Chinatown turned out to be more than we had anticipated. Our tour guide was Chiu-Hing Chan, Chairman, Brisbane China Town Committee and ‘Faces of Chinatown’ organiser, Young Queenslander of the Year 2009 and Vice Chairman of the Australian Chinese General Chamber of Business and former Chairman of the Qld Police Chinese Crime Prevention Committee. Chan took us exploring Chinatown Mall and various shops within the Mall. We met at the Fish statue in the centre of the Mall where he explained the significance of the Fish in Chinese culture. A short stop for morning tea was followed by an extensive tour of a Chinese supermarket. He explained various fruits and vegetables, spices and other goods and their use in Chinese cooking. Next stop was a herbalist shop where various herbs and their use were explained by the naturopath. Next was an arcade which had clothing and jewellery shops, where some members bought some authentic goods. All the walking left us feeling hungry so we proceeded to a Chinese Restaurant where we were served a lovely meal and took part in a tea drinking ceremony. A staff member explained the use of hand held fans for romantic liaisons. Members are looking forward to our Christmas Lunch in early December at our meeting venue. This catered event is always very well presented by the chef and staff. Early New Year sees us all meeting for our annual Champagne breakfast at Oxley Common. Late January the dinner group will meet at a local Chinese Restaurant for their banquet. The lunch group will continue to meet at a local Golf Club on the second Wednesday of the month. The mah jong group is currently in hiatus. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club.
SHERWOOD / INDOOROOPILLY RSL Sub-Branch Update by Kevin Alcock
This will be my last column for this year and how quickly this year seems to have passed. In addition to our usual commemorations this year, we had the unveiling and dedication of our Tarin Kot Memorial wall in August. This wall incorporated all the names listed on the original wall that was demolished on the pullout from the base in Afghanistan, with the addition of that of the last soldier who died in Kabul. Why did we do this? We did it so that those soldiers who have served there, and the families of those who have made the supreme sacrifice, know that we recognise and honour their sacrifice. As well as the 41 Australians who have died in Afghanistan, about 250 have been wounded, many by the improvised explosive devices, IED’s. Many more also suffer from the effects of Post Traumatic Stress disorder. The RSL has set up Mates4Mates to assist with the rehabilitation of the wounded and assist their families to become part of that rehabilitation. I am currently in Da Nang in Vietnam as I write this column but before I left I presented Curtis McGrath with a cheque for $1000, which was raised via raffles (thanks to organiser Lola Brewer), as a contribution towards his participation in the Para Olympics in Brazil. Curtis, as you can see from the above photo, has lost both legs but has set himself the goal of winning Olympic gold in Kayaking. He has already won a gold medal in the world championships earlier this year in Moscow. Curtis is a most impressive young man who is truly inspirational in overcoming the wounds he suffered, and our Sub-branch is pleased to lend our support to his campaign to win Olympic gold. In conclusion I wish all readers the very best for Christmas and the New Year.

Hello Readers St John’s students are being well prepared for their role as global citizens in the 21st Century. It is our desire to assist our students, not only in achieving their very best academically and seeing them thrive in the cultural, sporting and social aspects of our school community, but also introduce to them to a global community through enhancing our teaching programs. To be successful as adults in the workplace and in community life, our students will not only need to be highly literate in English and Mathematics, but they will also need to learn more about other countries than text books can provide. Real world experiences will teach them to be culturally sensitive, socially and emotionally competent and able to work in multi cultural teams. All of these skills are being developed in St John’s students. This year we have further developed our sister school links with Chinese schools in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Tianjin. On a recent school trip to China, our students spent time in these sister schools visiting classrooms and working together with Chinese students. This real life experience generated a lot of interest and excitement for our travellers. A partnership with our sister school in Shenzen, China presently sees primary aged students from Shenzhen Nanshan Bilingual School spend an entire term in our Primary classes, immersed in English lessons and conversing with our students. This program also allows the children from St John’s to practice their Chinese speaking skills as well as gain a greater understanding of the Chinese culture.
A place for INNOVATION
Two St John’s students were selected to travel to Tokyo and regional cities this year to participate in the Jenesys 2.0 Cultural Appreciation Program. Links with Kobe University Secondary School in Japan are also being established by St John’s.
St John’s is a collaborative, online, interconnected learning community.
As part of our commitment to developing deeper understandings for our staff and students in Chinese language and culture, our partnership with the Confucius Institute based at the University of Queensland has enabled our Head of Humanities Dr Odendaal to travel to Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin experiencing the Chinese language and culture first-hand. A volunteer teacher Judy Xiao from Shanghai University has also worked with small groups in our Chinese language classes in the primary and secondary classrooms to develop their speaking and listening skills. If you would like to know more about a St John’s education for your child, please contact our Registrar, Janette Collins 07 3372 0113 to arrange a time for your personal tour.
Our teachers motivate their students to use new technologies, to source real time information and to create and publish their work. They are being well prepared for a rapidly changing future.

Oxley Men’s Shed update
by Jim Pascoe
It was a great start to November with the inaugural Oxley Men’s Shed racing carnival held at the California Downs Race Course at Oxley and held in conjunction with Melbourne Cup Day. There were over fifty members, wives and guests in attendance for the three race carnival. The morning tea was supplied by members of the St John’s Oxley Ladies Fellowship. It was a fun day for all and they certainly all enjoyed themselves with their punting skills (or lack of it). Our providore, David Schonfisch was the instigator of this event and a great vote of thanks must go to him for the time that he spent and the great effort that he went to so that it was the success that it was. Thank You David. The shed’s machinery is now getting a good workout with a number of projects being attempted at present. One member has made two baseball bats and another is making tool boxes. A request was received from the Oxley State School music department for help in repairing their music sticks that were used by the students. These were found to be irreparable so the shed went about manufacturing new ones from the bare timber. Shed President, John Brown said, “It was a great exercise for shed members to participate in activities for and within the community.” On behalf of the Oxley Men’s Shed, John wishes all members of the community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and thanks them for their help and support over the last twelve months. The shed’s last meeting for the year will be held on Tuesday 16 December and will resume on Tuesday 13 January 2015 at California Road, Oxley.
Chelmer & District
PROBUS CLUBupdate by Coral Rieichman
MEMBERSHIP & PUBLICITY OFFICER
The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. At the end of November we all gathered at a local venue for our second annual Christmas Celebration Lunch. It was a great opportunity to get together to reflect and celebrate our second year which has seen our club grow and prosper. This year our Speakers Officer has made sure we were informed and entertained with a varied selection of speakers. Topics have ranged from the origins of Brisbane’s suburbs and localities; a behind the scenes look at putting together an exhibition at the Queensland Museum; all we need to know about our hearing; to how the volunteers at Brisbane Seniors On-line can help us with our computer problems. We started in our travel talks with some tips on ‘Travel for Seniors’ and then we were taken on journeys from above the Arctic Circle in an ice tent viewing the Northern Lights, to places in between and to getting up close and personal with the penguins in Antarctica. And on the home front we were entertained by the stories of two of our members who spent three months volunteering on a remote Northern Territory cattle station and Eco-retreat. And we all enjoyed another very successful year of outings which ranged from a visit to the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium to view the cosmic skydome to celebrating Queensland day with a walk at the Oxley Creek Common, followed by a BBQ breakfast using the wonderful facilities there, to a most informative tour of the ABC Studios. We look forward to another year of coming together to hear a range of informative speakers and hearing about members travel and going on some interesting outings. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. For further information please ring Coral on 3379 7540. The Local News - December 2014 - Page 11

Veterinary Voice by Diane M Sheehan BVSc
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, your family and your lovely pets. I can hardly believe that another year will soon end and we will be welcoming in 2015. This is the time of year when we look at keeping our pets safe from over indulging on Christmas fare and we can make healthier choices when it comes to a present under the Christmas tree for your dog, cat or bird. There are fun cat toys available and environmental enrichment treat balls, puzzle balls for your dogs that will keep them occupied and active. I have listed some food items that need to be avoided at this time of year and the issue of heat stress during the holiday season. Heat stroke can really be a problem, remember to walk your dog in the cooler mornings or evenings. Don’t over exercise your dog out in the heat of the day. They will want to please you and can keep going until they suffer from heat exhaustion. Make sure that there is plenty of fresh clean water available for your pet during these hot summer days, add some ice cubes and if you are going to the park take some water with you for them. There are also some new products available that help keep your pet cool in the heat. Evaporative cooling mats that you soak in water and they provide a cool resting place that can last up to 5-6 hours. Also available are cooling coats/jackets that you soak in water and put on your dog to keep them cool. Food Treats Keep in mind that your pet should not be fed cooked bones of any size, cooking does change the bone structure which makes them more likely to splinter and cause damage to the tummy and gut lining. Leftovers Another one to remember. Do not use your pet as a rubbish bin. We all hate waste but if the leftover ham or turkey is not good enough for the family to eat, it is not good enough for your pet. The same can be said for the fatty bits of ham you cut off. They should be thrown out not given to your pet as a treat. Large amounts of fat may cause pancreatitis which is a painful, debilitating disease that starts with vomiting inappetence and lethargy and you must then see your vet. Remember too much fat can trigger the symptoms. Chocolate We can’t talk about the festive season without talking about chocolate poisoning. It can cause real damage to your pet affecting the gastro intestinal tract, central nervous and cardio-vascular systems. The clinical symptoms can occur within six to eight hours of chocolate ingestion and can cause sudden death so remember the signs are vomiting, diarrhoea, thirst and agitation, urinary incontinence and seizures. Treat your pet this Christmas by getting them a toy, a cat or doggy treat, they will enjoy it more and it is better for them. And take the time to use the holidays for extra walking with your pet. Have a wonderful Christmas break and we wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.
