Be a sweetheart this Valentine’s Day HeartKids Australia is offering ‘sweethearts’ around the nation a new way to show their love this Valentine’s Day, while also raising much-needed funds to fight childhood heart disease - the biggest cause of death of children under the age of one. HeartKids Australia’s Sweetheart Day on Saturday, February 14 allows anyone to demonstrate their love for a partner, friend or family member – no matter where they are in the world – by sending them a virtual gift donation via www. sweetheartday.org.au. The funds contribute to the national charity’s support, research, advocacy and awareness work. Childhood heart disease is not a single condition; it includes a wide range of heart defects which a child is born with or develops in childhood as a result of other illnesses. Some cases require major heart surgery within days of a child’s birth, while others remain undiagnosed until adolescence or adulthood. Eight babies a day are born with a heart defect in Australia. “Sweetheart Day is the charitable way to turn some of the money we would normally spend on Valentine’s Day presents into tangible benefits for kids in need, such as funding for life-saving research or family support during surgeries and treatments. The purchase of a virtual gift sends a message of love to those you care for, as well as the thousands of heartkids’ families around Australia,” said Jann Kingston, CEO of HeartKids Australia. “For the families of babies born with heart defects, the emotional and financial stress is profound. While the scope of childhood heart disease is broad, some children born with heart defects will undergo open heart surgery in the first few days of their life,” added Kingston. “However, surgery is not a cure. Children with CHD will face unique challenges for their entire lives. This may include ongoing medical treatment and repeated heart surgeries. The disease is for life, once a heartkid always a heartkid.” HeartKids helps families through every step of their journey. Sweetheart Day aims to raise the funds needed to provide this support, as well as help fund research into the causes, treatment and management of heart defects and broaden awareness of Childhood Heart Disease in Australia.

with Susannah Friis Somewhere in the week between Christmas and New Years, my washing machine broke. And when I say broke, I mean it would fill the tub full of water and then refuse to wash, leaving me with a load of sopping wet clothes and limited means to rectify the situation. To say I was annoyed and frustrated would be an understatement. After having guests and a full house over Christmas, I subsequently faced piles of dirty sheets, tablecloths, towels and clothes laying about my laundry. Even though I took a few loads of essentials to a friend’s house and used her machine while I waited the week and a half it took for the part to come in and the repairman to come back and fix it, there was a backlog of washing to be done. One of my husband’s well used phrases is ‘playing catch up’. It has a myriad of applications and certainly applies here! I hate ‘playing catch up’ of any sort. Whether it’s coming back to an overflowing inbox after a holiday, washing when it’s been raining (or a broken machine!), weeding the garden or the piles of washing up and dishwasher duties after a weekend of entertaining. Another circumstance in which we say ‘catch up’ is with regard to friends. And I have to be honest, this is something I would actually rather not do. Let me explain. The fact that I need to ‘catch up’ on my friends lives, says to me that I haven’t seen them enough to keep up to date on what’s happening with them. If my life is too busy to hear about the everyday things that happen in the lives of those I love, then maybe I need to refocus my life and where my time is spent. Of course, it’s wonderful, and necessary, to spend longer chunks of time with people to really hear where they’re at and how they are travelling, but when we’ve left it so long that there are the metaphorical piles of washing strewn about, it should be a warning to us that we aren’t investing enough in those around us. And in our marriages, where jobs, kids, other family, friends and commitments, all take up our time, we can find ourselves never delving deeper than the logistics of life i.e. what’s for dinner, who’s taking who to dance, sport or music lessons. Before we know it, we need to ‘catch up’ on our spouse. It’s easy to let things pile up and get behind in our relationships and often, our only fault is a lack of intentional connection. It takes time to ask the deeper questions, just as it takes time to put a load of washing on, hang it out, fold it and put it away. But just as it takes a lot more time to catch up on washing after the machine breaks down, it takes a lot more time to repair a relationship after an extended time of only relating on a surface level. Why not resolve this year to be more intentional with your relationships? Putting a load on every day is more beneficial to everyone than having to do load upon load trying to catch up.

Veterinary Voice by Diane b Di M Sheehan eh han BVSc BV

Cat Adoption Centres Our Cat Adoption Centre Program works with the community, welfare agencies and pounds to re-home cats and kittens that otherwise face an uncertain future. We believe that veterinary practices by their nature are ideal for the housing and sale of felines, as we have strict hygiene and quarantine regimes as well as very caring and knowledgeable staff. Often, we are contacted by small welfare groups that have kittens they need to find homes for and we have taken kittens from groups as far away as Caloundra. Also during the kitten season, which starts in spring and continues through the warmer months, we have taken in kittens that have been thrown in a sack and dumped on a shops doorstep. The Cat Adoption program really promotes responsible pet ownership, so all cats and kittens are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea free prior to adoption. The cats and kittens are not free. However, the adoption fee is subsidised by each centre and is designed to contribute toward the costs of the veterinary procedures and the feeding and care of the animals while they are here. The benefits of pet ownership are well researched and documented. Pet owners have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, visit the doctor less frequently and use fewer medicines. Pets also have the ability to reduce tension, confusion, fatigue and loneliness in the elderly who are less likely to suffer from depression and tend to cope better with life. While teenagers living with a pet have a more positive outlook on life and tend to be less restless. So far this kitten season we have had 20 kittens adopted out to loving homes often in the area. We know that Archie, Mia, Jazz, Figaro, Malaya, Shadow, Toby, Molly and Batman and all the others have settled into their new homes and are getting into mischief and bringing joy to the household. We have a very special five year old cat, pure white in the adoption centre at the moment. ‘Bounder’ belonged to a friend of mine who sadly lost her fight with cancer last month. She made me promise to find him a new home. Bounder has been an only cat living with my friend and has spent his life inside. He is a purely indoor cat, that has been much loved. He has settled in well here and is ready for his new life. On adoption, all new cats and kittens are sent home with an adoption certificate, a carry box, some food they have been using in here, a cat bowl and an information pamphlet on settling in a new pet.

Friends of Sherwood arboretum by Andrew Benison

- Brisbane’s living treasure -

A Fun Run to celebrate 90 years This is a wonderful chance for your family to be part of a once-in-a-lifetime birthday celebration and also win prizes. The heritage-listed Sherwood Arboretum will mark its 90th anniversary on Saturday 21 March with a ‘fun run’, for 12 years and under, starting at 8.30am from near the Jolimont Street car park. To enter, all you need do is send a brief email, with the subject heading ‘fun run’, to the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA) at info@ sherwoodarboretum.com.au or call 3278 6525 this month. Parents will be most welcome to join their young family members for the ‘fun run’ to be held within Sherwood Arboretum. Sherwood Forest Runners, which has organised events in the Arboretum each Saturday for more than 30 years, will be offering their considerable expertise for this special anniversary ‘fun run’. The Lord Mayor, Cr Graham Quirk will present the ‘fun run’ and ‘lucky door’ prizes, following a brief ceremony starting at 9am. Cr Matthew Bourke, Council’s Chairman for Environment, Parks and Sustainability, and Mr Ross McKinnon, the recently retired Curator of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, will join the Lord Mayor for the planting of a Queensland Kauri tree as part of Council’s restoration of the historic Kauri avenue. Several of our pioneering families and special guests, including State and Local Government representatives and the Oxley-Chelmer History Group, also will be planting a commemorative grove to mark the Arboretum’s foundation on Saturday 21 March 1925. FOSA welcomes you to stay for a family barbecue on the lawns overlooking the impressive Kauri avenue at 9.30am. In 1925, Sherwood Arboretum was a pacesetter in Australia by its focus on Australian native trees, at a time when botanic gardens and arboreta placed great emphasis on exotic tree species from across the world.

SHERWOOD / INDOOROOPILLY LY RSL Sub-Branch Update by Kevin Alcock ock k

As I write this article, the first three weeks of January have passed and we are preparing for our first commemorative activity, the commemoration of the battle of Onverwacht Hills. This took place 113 years ago of the 4th of February 1902. You may ask “Why do you commemorate this particular battle that took place in the Boer War?” The significance to us is that it was fought by men of the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen the ancestor unit of the current 2/14th Light Horse Regiment (QMI) which has been a proud Queensland Regiment. Additionally the 5th QIB had a strong connection with our local area. The memorial at the St Matthew’s Anglican cemetery in Sherwood was erected to honour Sgt. Robert Berry and A/Cpl John Macfarlane who were both from the Sherwood/Graceville area. Indeed the Berry family still reside in the area and have strong historical links to our local area. On the 4th of February 1902, a contingent from the 5th QIB encountered a strong force of Boers at Onverwacht Hills and in a battle in which they were vastly outnumbered, lost 11 of their number killed in action in the encounter with a further two later dying of wounds suffered in the battle. Sergeant Berry and Acting Corporal Macfarlane were among those who were killed in the battle. Those men of the 5th QIB fought under the Australian Flag, the battle having occurred post Federation, so it is only fitting that we honoured them in our service on the 4th of February. Our next big service will, of course, be the ANZAC Day services to commemorate the Centenary of the ANZAC landings. Our preparations are proceeding and I look forward to telling you all about them in later issues of The Local News. The Local News - February 2015 - Page 5

Free music in the park in March Local residents will be able to enjoy a free afternoon of music in the park on Sunday 15 March, from 2-4pm at Nixon Park, Oxley. Bands in the Park is an ongoing program of free performances taking place across Brisbane, and for the Oxley event will feature the Brisbane band Still Standing. Still Standing is comprised of musos who’ve been around too long to take themselves too seriously. If you like the sound of Santana, Otis Redding, Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, Garry More or the Commitments, you’ll have a good time. The glue in the six piece line-up is the three original members of the successful early 70s Brisbane band ‘Gentle Art’. Singer Dick Grantley, drummer Stu Hoffman and bass player Gary Meehan have played together now for over 45 years. Keyboard player Carlos Sibilin, guitarist Thomas Lloyd and keyboard/sax player Hugh Bristow joined the band many years ago and contribute to maintaining their tight, progressive, bluesy, rock/soul sound. So come along and enjoy the fourth annual Oxley Neighbourhood Watch ‘Bands in the Park’ event for a wonderful afternoon of live music. Food and drinks will be available, as well as a jumping castle and fairy face painters. Residents are asked to bring a blanket or chair to sit on for the afternoon. This community event is hosted by Oxley Neighbourhood Watch and funded by the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund and the Councillor for Richlands Ward. For further information, call 3407 1211.

Fun-draising for a good cause This May, for a whole week, a group of intrepid riders will travel by camel-back from Noosa to Australia Zoo on a five-day trek of fun and fundraising to benefit children with disabilities throughout Brisbane for the MontroseAccess ‘Glamel Trek’. The scenic itinerary is a special kind of road trip through some of the Sunshine Coast’s most famous locations from Inskip Point to finish at the hinterland. It’s also a once-only opportunity for sponsors to ‘buy’ a camel and join the trek as riders or to send a friend and support one of Queensland’s longest established children’s charities. The 7 Sunrise breakfast team will be joining the journey with a live cross to the Trekkers each morning and riders will be treated to a cooked breakfast each day by Jake and Elle, the 2013 My Kitchen Rules finalists. The Trek is seeking sponsors now to participate for the entire 5-day trek for $10,000, 1-day for $2,500 or to partake in an extremely unique experience as a camelwrangler for the week for just $2, 000! Each camel can carry up to two people and camels can be themed, dressed and logo-ed! Riders can also raise funds through a dedicated fundraising website. Each day, the local community, schools and MontroseAccess clients are invited to greet the camels and riders along their journey and the itinerary features a cultural, environmental and local food and wine trail through the Sunshine Coast. The MontroseAccess Glamel Trek will be held from May 10 until May 15. Companies or individual riders interested in becoming a sponsor of this unique and exciting event can contact Leanne Liesegang from MontroseAccess on 0416 275 868 or lliesegang@montroseaccess.org.au.

Chelmer & District

PROBUS CLUBupdate by Coral Rieichman

MEMBERSHIP & PUBLICITY OFFICER

The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. The year started in January with a very informative talk given by Julie Marsh, Executive Assistant and Lorraine Carter, volunteering Manager from FSG Australia who spoke to us on ‘Why Freedom, Social Justice and Growth’. FSG Australia is a ‘for purpose’, not for profit organisation. We learnt how FSGA walks alongside people in the community with disabilities, mental health, foster children and the disadvantaged. FSG Australia has many opportunities for volunteers from all walks of life which includes their host family program and their mentoring programs with corporations and industry. Our speaker on February 25th will tell us all about the Australian native bee species and how they are excellent pollinators of our native plants and also some crops. We will learn about the ten species of stingless bees, native to tropical areas and in particular which ones are native to Brisbane. Also we will learn how to keep and care for a hive in our backyard, or what to do, if anything, if you have a nest in a hollow tree. As they are stingless, they make an excellent wildlife study for grandparents and grandchildren. If you are interested in joining a warm and friendly group of active retirees and would like to learn about our native bees in February or the history of our local picture theatre in March you are most welcome to come along as a guest at a meeting. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. For further information please ring Coral on 3379 7540. Page 8 - February 2015 - The Local News

Hello Readers At this time of the year we celebrate the success of our graduates of 2014 and acknowledge their success in achieving the tertiary study course of their first choice. 103 students graduated from St John’s in 2014 with most taking up places at universities to study an array on disciplines such as Engineering, Law, Business and Health Sciences. We know they have been well prepared for this stage of their learning lives and we wish them every success. As a learning community, St John’s teachers focus on using “next” practice to provide opportunities for students at all year levels to achieve the best educational outcomes. As an independent school St John’s has the capacity to take a balanced view about what’s important for our young people to know and be able to do in the future and to encourage them in their learning and development in both academic and extracurricular pursuits. As “custodians of opportunity” our teachers challenge young minds to develop confidence in using their natural creativity and being innovative in their thinking. As we prepare young people for their future in the rapidly changing digital world, we are aware that they will need to reinvent themselves over and over as they move through careers and into new ones. Confidence and personal resilience will be essential attributes of the St John’s graduate. Students at St John’s are developing inquiring minds through our recent successful application to be a candidate school within the world-renowned International Baccalaureate program. In addition to our strong focus on literacy and numeracy, this year students are using their natural inquisitiveness to think for themselves and solve problems in creative ways. Complementing our focus on teaching inquiry methods to children of all year levels is our commitment to providing many and varied opportunities through our extracurricular programs in sport, performing arts and service programs. A balanced educational program is the key to success for your child so please take the opportunity to visit us on our first Open Day for 2015 or alternatively contact our Registrar to arrange a personal tour email: jcollins@sjac.qld.edu.au

Benarrawa CDA Update

by Jenna MacDonnell, Communities Development Worker

February is set to be a busy month at Benarrawa CDA as regular group activities return to their usual schedules and a new women’s creative group commences early in the month. Benarrawa Women’s Creative Circle will begin meeting on a weekly basis at Benarrawa from Tuesday 10 February (10-12pm). The creative circle will provide a space for women who share a common interest in art and other creative endeavours to come together to work on various joint and individual creative projects. It also hopes to provide opportunities for women to connect with one another, and build healthy, positive relationships and a sense of belonging in their local community. The first month will see the group work on leopard seed painting, painting balsa wood, and begin discussing ideas for a longer-term group project. New participants are welcomed and encouraged to contact Benarrawa for more information, or simply head along on a Tuesday morning. In other news, Southside Nature Babes met for a planning session in mid January. This session saw the group reflecting on 2014, including such achievements as being awarded Runners-Up for Best Nature Playgroup at the Annual Playgroup QLD Awards Ceremony. One outcome of the planning session was a decision by the group to change its name to ‘Nature Babes at Benarrawa’ which was seen to better reflect the geographical location of the group and its connection to the local area. Nature Babes at Benarrawa continues to meet every Wednesday morning (9.30 - 11.30am) at Benarrawa/Graceville Community Garden. New families are most welcome. The Graceville Community Garden continues to support Nature Babes in its various endeavours, most recently aiding the group to find a home within the garden for a timber cubby-house kindly donated to Benarrawa by a local Corinda family. Graceville Community Garden meets for working bees every Sunday from 7am. Other regular activities held at Benarrawa CDA include a Community Lunch from 12-2pm on the first Tuesday of every month, South West Network of Carers (SNOC) gatherings on the fourth Wednesday of every month, and Benarrawa Aboriginal and Torres Islander Solidarity group (BenATSI) meetings every two to three months on a Saturday. All of these groups and activities welcome new participants. Please contact John or Jenna at Benarrawa CDA for more information. Benarrawa CDA is located at 79 Waratah Avenue, Graceville. Phone: 3379 9925 or email: benarrawa@westnet.com.au.

Oxley Men’s Shed Update After a break over the Christmas, New Year period, the shed is up and running. Our last two Tuesday meetings have been well supported with nearly thirty members in attendance. There are already a number of projects for us to start the year with not including those that the members bring in themselves. Our garden had a break as well and is now ready for new plantings. It is amazing what was produced from it during last year. One of our next projects for the shed is to have an awning erected on the Eastern side so that we can have activities and work outside where it is certainly cooler. It will also benefit the St John’s parishioners who will use it for morning tea after services. Following the November storm, we were fortunate enough to have obtained some Silky Oak timber which will be put to good use when it finally dries. Some has already been earmarked by members. Shed President, John Brown said that he is looking forward to the coming year and wondering what it will bring and if it is anything like 2014, he will be very satisfied. Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 11th February followed by our ordinary meeting. If any men would like to come and visit, the shed is open from 9.00am until noon every Monday and Tuesday at St John’s Anglican Church hall, California Rd, Oxley. Call in and have a cuppa with us. Inagural Oxley Community Festival on Saturday 21 March This year, Oxley State School will be hosting the inaugural Oxley Community Festival on the lower oval on Saturday 21st March from 10am to 3pm. The festival will be a great day out for all with rides, handmade crafts and gifts, activities and entertainment available to enjoy on the day. Oxley State School has over 500 students enrolled in classes from Prep to Year 6 and this year will be celebrating 145 years. With many significant occasions happening locally, including Harmony Day and the Centenary of ANZAC Day, what better way to kick the year off that with a community festival. The local RSL, Rotary Club of Rocks Riverside, Oxley Bowls Club, Oxley Uniting Church, I Feel Good 24/7, National Storage, Nannette Lilley Realty and Oxley Girl Guides are just some of the local groups and businesses who have come on board to make this event as successful as possible. The idea of the day is that all local community and nonfor-profit organisations can raise some much needed money. The School is raising money for some new shade structures for around the grounds. If you would like information about this event, or would like to get involved please contact Lauren Jarvis, the P&C President on 0418 987 291 or send an email to eljarvis1@ optusnet.com.au or contact the school on 3716 2444.

Oxley-Chelmer History Group Update DANCE STUDIO History group collects memories of Sherwood Arboretum The Arboretum has been a special place for many local residents for ninety years. The Oxley-Chelmer History Group is keen to collect stories and photographs so that its history can be recorded and kept. On 21st March 1925 a large crowd gathered to witness the Governor, Sir Matthew Nathan, declare the Arboretum open. He spoke about the importance of preserving Queensland native trees. On that day, 72 prominent people planted trees in what was to become known as Sir Matthew Nathan Avenue. Many of them were local residents, former Sherwood Shire Councillors and members of the Queensland Forestry Association which had been at the forefront in proposing the establishment of the Arboretum. Local Scouts and schoolchildren were also involved in tree planting. Since then, numerous public events and family celebrations have taken place there. The Oxley-Chelmer History Group is keen to hear stories and to copy photographs which may be hidden away in old family albums so that a record may be kept of events such as the original tree planting, Sunday School picnics, Scout and Guide events, family birthday parties, weddings, school functions, tree plantings and working bees. The History Group will be present, along with the Friends of the Sherwood Arboretum Association, at the 90th anniversary celebrations on Saturday 21 March from 8.30 am. Phone Marion Mackenzie on 3379 1967 for more details.

Rotarians looking for local projects to support To kick off what promises to be another busy year for the Clubs, members of the Rotary Clubs of Brisbane Taylor Bridge and Rocks Riverside recently got together, along with some family members, to enjoy a night of barefoot bowling at Oxley Bowling Club. While it was clear that there were no champions participating, a couple of the younger players demonstrated their raw potential, but still not enough to defeat the oldies. The Brisbane Taylor Bridge Rotary Club, which meets Tuesday evenings at Corinda, is in the process of developing their community service plan for the next six months and beyond. Being a relatively new club, it has keen members looking for opportunities to make a difference in their local community, which includes the area from Corinda to Chelmer. The Club has an excellent mix of genders and ages and aims to have fun while undertaking its service activities. Members and their partners also meet for dinner at local restaurants each month. If you’re interested in knowing more about Rotary or would like to come along to one of the meetings, contact the Club President, Ted Crowe on 0415 515 000.

Sherwood Probus Club Update

by Pam Dale

Sherwood Probus was lucky to have Frank Levy from Queensland Rail as the speaker for January. Frank gave a most informative talk about the new train called the Spirit of Queensland, which runs between Brisbane and Cairns. There are no sleeper cabins on this train but it has sleeping pods which are made up by rail staff into a bed at night. He also advised us of concessions available for pensioners and senior card holders. From July this train will run six days a week, so there is no limit to the number of pensioners who can book. We were able to take home notices about concessions and a book ”Discover Queensland by Rail”. Frank was ably assisted by Greg Hopper from Probus sponsors Trade Travel who can design a trip to suit our members. In February, we will have a completely different type of speaker in the Reverend Ian McIver who will speak of his time working as a minister in Kenya and the challenges that presented. Our outing for early March is a Gold Coast Canal Cruise and a trip on the tramway from Broadbeach to the Southport terminus. Morning tea is on the boat and lunch at Surfers Paradise RSL. The lunch group has returned to meeting on the second Wednesday of the month at a local Golf Club. The book group continues to meet at a member’s home. The selection for January is When the Night Comes by Favel Parrett. At this meeting, the group will decide a discussion list for the coming year. The garden group will resume in early March when a program for the coming year will be organised. Scrabble continues to be played at a nearby club where much fun and enjoyment is had. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club.
