The Oxley and District Garden Club celebrated its 30th Anniversary at a Friendship Day at Wolston House, Wacol. The weather was very kind to us, and, although cloudy, there were no showers. We were joined by many guests from neighbouring Garden Clubs and the cake was cut by our two patrons, Wendy Brittain and Milton Dick. We have had lots of rain in the last month and the plants which gardeners planted to cut down on water use, did not like it! Gazanias, geraniums, succulents – all suffered or even died. However, no complaints as the rain would have replenished the moisture in the subsoil. One of the pests to watch for from now on is the Lily Caterpillar. I have seen the moths flying around the hippeastrums, zepheranthes and other bulbs. The caterpillars are black and white, sometimes with a touch of red. These caterpillars can devastate a plant overnight! A systemic insecticide can be effective or a ‘caterpillar patrol’ morning and evening will work! We have welcomed three new members to the Club at our last meeting. Visitors are also very welcome. Our next visit to Masters, Richlands, is on Tuesday 2nd June at 11am. We look forward to another interesting talk. For further information, contact Meg on 3379 2015.

On Tuesday 26 May Benarrawa Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Solidarity Group (BenATSI) hosted its annual Sorry Day Ceremony at the ‘Journey Home’ plaque at Sherwood Arboretum. Over 80 people attended, including both Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members and representatives from local schools, government and various community groups. Uncle Des Sandy welcomed those present to country. Gaja Kerry Charlton also spoke and participated in the planting of a Native Hibiscus, the plant endorsed by the National Sorry Day Committee as symbolic of the resilience of stolen generations. Songlines Choir closed the ceremony, which was followed by a shared breakfast. In the month following Sorry Day, Benarrawa is also coordinating a series of cultural reconciliation workshops for grade 6 students at local primary schools. These workshops will be facilitated by Gaja Kerry Charlton and are focused on connecting the students to the history of the land they are standing on and helping them to see it as a part of their personal histories. Other regular Benarrawa groups and activities that will continue throughout coming months include Nature Babes at Benarrawa playgroup, gathering every Wednesday from 9.30-11.30am; Graceville Community Garden working bees every Sunday from 7am; Community Lunches on the first Tuesday of every month; and the Benarrawa Women’s Creative Circle, which is now meeting on the second and fourth Monday of every month. Newcomers are welcomed to each of these groups. Please contact John or Jenna at Benarrawa CDA for more information on any of these events and activities. Phone 3379 9925 or email benarrawa@westnet.com.au. Benarrawa CDA is located at 79 Waratah Avenue, Graceville.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis It seems to me that one of the biggest problems with us as a society is a lack of self-reflection. I’m amazed at the number of times when I’m chatting with someone and I ask a question that the answer comes back “I don’t know...I’ve never really thought about that before. It seems that people don’t reflect and ponder on things like we used to. Obviously, too much self-reflection can lead to, at worst, narcissism or just plain old selfishness but it is necessary to have insight into ourselves, others and the world around us. And psychology backs up the importance of selfreflection and insight with many therapists recommending mindfulness or meditation in some form or another. I was listening to the radio the other day - and I’ll show my age by saying it was an ABC station! - and it was discussed that it is so important to allow children to process and self-reflect at the end of their school day, and how, often, as parents it can be easy to overlook this important part of the day. You see, if, as children, we have the opportunity to process the happenings of the day with a parent, we begin our journey of self-reflection. Without self-reflection, it’s harder to learn from mistakes, we go on to repeat behaviour that is potentially harmful because we haven’t been taught how to reflect on our actions and learn how to make different choices that will result in a more positive outcome. What we lack as a society is also what psychologists call ‘insight’, which is according to the dictionary, ‘penetrating mental vision or discernment; faculty of seeing into inner character or underlying truth.’ We barely know ourselves, so how can we even begin to have an understanding of others or the world at large? Some of you may have read this column in the April edition about noise and our need for some quiet - not just audibly but internally. I think the amount of noise we contend with on a daily basis is directly related to our lack of self reflection and insight. With so much else going on, with so many things vying for our attention, it can be hard to break away and just ‘be’. I’ve said it before but it bears saying again - we are human BEings, not human DOings. We desperately need to step aside from our lives, take a breath and take some time to think! And not only to think but to ponder, wonder and ruminate. Some of you may know that there is a labyrinth located at St Catherine’s Anglican church, 43 Macfarlane Street, Middle Park. The labyrinth is a wonderful way to take that time out - even just 15 minutes - to simply be alone with your thoughts and feelings and reconnect with yourself. The labyrinth is open to the public, available day or night, won’t cost you a cent and is just a short drive away. Why not make time to get some space in this fast paced life we all live? Drop the kids off at school, take a detour on your way to work, or whatever your daily routine is, leave the phone in the car and just...breathe.

State of Adoption Challenge is on again! It’s on once again! In what RSPCA Qld staff and volunteers admit is a blatant rip off of the State of Origin series, the State of Adoption challenge has once again gone out to RSPCA NSW. This year Queensland is hoping to win an historic seven in a row. The goal is to re-home as many animals as possible from the start of the first State of Origin game to the end of the last. The toughly fought contest bears another striking resemblance to the State of Origin series with most of the adoptees having a bit of ‘the mongrel’ in them! “Of course, it’s a rip off on the whole concept but if we’re re-homing more animals, then it’s all worthwhile,” said RSPCA Qld spokesman Michael Beatty. “We will start as the underdogs, if you’ll pardon the pun, because Queensland has nine shelters, while NSW has twelve. But Queenslanders are used to that tag and it just stirs us on.” “Once they’ve seen the fantastic animals we have up for adoption, we know they’ll find their perfect match and for us the perfect match is Queensland winning by a cat’s whisker!” To adopt a new furry family member, simply go to www.rspcaqld.org.au/adopt/ and follow the prompts.

Cyclists set a new pace for charity Many people might think that having a pacemaker would mean you need to take life fairly slow and easy. But for a small group of cyclists in Brisbane nothing could be further from the truth – regularly riding over 100km while raising money for a variety of worthy causes. John Rayner, retired metallurgical engineer, has had a pacemaker for almost six years, and has been riding in charity events for four years. He began forming the group of pacemaker equipped cyclists – called Riders with Pace – last year. The group has three aims: • to raise money for a wide range of charities through riding in fundraising events in south-east Queensland; • to provide a physical challenge suited to their level of fitness and capability to people with pacemakers and; • to show that life can be full and rewarding with a pacemaker. The only things you need in order to join the group are a pacemaker and a bicycle. Most of the events Riders with Pace enter offer distances from 25 to 100km, so riders can choose their own challenge. In 2014, Riders with Pace raised over $2500 across several charities as diverse as medical research, support for homeless youth, and provision of care for the sick. New riders are always welcome – if you’ve got the pacemaker you can always buy the bicycle. For more information including contact details go to the website: www.riderswithpace.wix.com/riders-with-pace. The next event Riders with Pace has entered is the MS Brissie to the Bay on June 21. This event is organised annually by Multiple Sclerosis Queensland, and raises money to support the many Queenslanders living with multiple sclerosis. In Australia, more than twenty-three thousand people live with MS, and four new cases are diagnosed every working day. The average age at diagnosis is just 30. The cause of MS is unknown, also unknown is why three times more women are affected by MS than men. At present there is little prospect of a cure. Care consists of managing the symptoms, which typically become worse with time. Riders with Pace will have three entrants in this event who, between them, have over twenty-five years of pacemakers. They will be riding a total of 225km. All three riders are actively fundraising, and you can help Queenslanders living with MS by supporting their fundraising efforts. Please go to the fundraising website: www.msqldevents.com.au/champion/MS-Brissie-to-theBay-2015/RiderswithPace.

Winter and arthritis Arthritis is one of the most common diseases affecting your dog that we see in the practice at this time of year. Arthritis is a chronic, painful, degenerative condition that develops gradually over years. It can affect more than one joint, causing inflammation and pain for your dog. Arthritis can be controlled to minimise pain and increase mobility which adds to your dog’s quality of life. The key is to go to your vet and have your dog checked for an early diagnosis and treatment program. That way you and your dog are well prepared to cope with the colder winter months and by treating your pet early, you can slow down the progress of the disease. The cooler months are when the signs of arthritis increase and the pain increases. Degenerative joint disease can be managed but remember it is control not a cure. Sadly, in some cases, the crippling effects of arthritis are unavoidable due to injury, joint abnormalities, being overweight, getting older and general wear and tear which affects the larger and more active breeds and they develop ongoing problems. Your dog does experience pain with this condition but the problem lies in your pet’s inability to communicate this pain and common signs can be missed. Dogs over seven years are at a higher risk of being effected and large breeds more than toy breeds, however, it is a disease that can affect all ages and breeds. You are in the best position to identify early clinical signs as you know your dog’s personality and will be able to recognise subtle changes to your dogs physical activity. Some signs to watch out for are: • not wanting to go for a walk; • limping; • stiffness in the morning or after a sleep; • licking or biting their joints; • difficulty getting up; • difficulty climbing stairs; and, • a change in personality from happy and playful to irritable and sad. Talk to your vet about the symptoms and treatment. There are a large number of medications that are used these days to give relief and don’t forget there are supportive therapies such as condroitin blends, omega 3 capsules, green lip muscles, shark cartilage and glucosamine supplements; some are in capsule form, powders, chews or joint food. Remember to only give your pet arthritis drugs prescribed for dogs NOT medication for humans. Dogs can react differently to many medications and serious side effects can occur. Get you dog checked out with a visit to your vet and start on treatment to make their winter cosy and more comfortable. Create a comfortable, soft warm environment especially during winter away from draughts, get a bed off the ground with a lot of comfortable padding which is better than a blanket. Gentle lead exercise is good, as is swimming. Remember, an early diagnosis and treatment for this lifelong condition can mean a more comfortable and enjoyable life.

Never too young to make a difference

Photo courtesy of Tracey from Equs Images For most parents, when a child expresses interest in having a pet, it’s usually the parents who end up with the responsibility of the day to day care of the animal. Not so for mum Rachel whose six year old daughter Ruby has always taken a very hands-on approach to the care and rehabilitation of rescued horses. Richlands residents, Rachel and her two daughters, 16 year old Ryley and six year old Ruby volunteer with Save A Horse Australia (SAHA). The organisation was established by Amanda Vella in 2001 and became a fully registered not for profit organisation in 2009. The family have been volunteering for the last six years, with Ruby being literally involved all her life. “She has always shown a keen interest in learning about all the horse’s names, health problems and especially their stories,” said Rachel. “She seems to be able to connect to the horses by just showing kindness, love and gentle hands, which is something many rescue horses have not had. “Recently when she was looking at horse photos on Facebook with me and we came across a photo of a very skinny horse with ribs showing, she asked if Save A Horse Australia could save that horse and make its tummy big. I explained that at the moment the rescue was full and couldn’t fit in anymore sick horses because they didn’t quite have enough money. “She immediately went to her money box and got all her coins out and said “Mummy will this be enough?” and that’s what started her fundraising for the horses.” As part of the charity’s annual fundraiser, Horses Birthday Party, event held every August, Ruby set the goal of raising $500, starting with the money from her money box - $5.75. From humble beginnings, big things grow; at the time of printing, Ruby has over $300 pledged on her fundraising page. The goal of $500 will easily be reached with a fundraising party for family and friends to be held at the end of July. SAHA depend entirely on donations and are grateful for the support they receive, not only from individuals but from businesses. Donations for Ruby’s fundraising efforts can be made at Horseland Jindalee at Jindalee Homemaker Centre, where receipts can be issued for tax deduction purposes. Donations can also be made online by going to www.saveahorse. giveeasy.org/campaigns/rubys-rescue-dream/. For further information and all general inquires, please go to www.saveahorse.org.au.

Chelmer & District

PROBUS CLUBupdate by Coral Rieichman

MEMBERSHIP & PUBLICITY OFFICER

The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members mainly from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. At our last meeting, we were inspired by Richard Swindell, who founded U3A (University of the Third Age) in Brisbane in 1986. Richard not only spoke about the history of U3A in Brisbane but also about successful ageing. He explained that to ‘age successfully’ we must make five choices: to keep our body active, to keep our minds active, to do interesting things, to have social networks, and to follow sound advice. Richard spoke in a most vibrant and humorous manner which we all thoroughly enjoyed and he certainly inspired us. U3A is an autonomous organisation managed by the members themselves. Many of the members are volunteer tutors and share their skills, knowledge and experiences with fellow members. Like Probus, U3A members practise active retirement. Also at our last meeting one of our members gave us a five minute cameo of her very interesting life. She shared with us her many travel experiences including those when she worked as a volunteer in Mongolia, North Vietnam, East Timor and Laos. This is a wonderful way for members to get to know each other, to hear some interesting stories and to learn something new. One of our members will be our speaker this month and she will take us on a travel journey along the south west coast of Greenland, the land of the mid-night sun and giant icebergs. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Avenue, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded active retirees. For further information please ring Coral on 3379 7540.

Oxley-Chelmer History Group Update by Marion Mackenzie A residential development known as Arbour Reach is in train at Magazine and Ferry Streets, Sherwood, on a site with a significant history. From 1881, the Queensland Defence Force stored ammunition in a magazine on high ground safe from floods. The name remains in the street name. After Federation, the Commonwealth Government took over the site. Plans for a naval wharf and storage of ordnance were rejected after pressure from local residents and the Sherwood Shire Council. For several years the land was leased for grazing. In 1921, it became the national headquarters of the Commonwealth Prickly Pear Board. At the time, the menace of the prickly pear cactus crippled 26 million hectares of farmland, to the extent that some farmers were forced to walk off their properties. The Board established a laboratory to investigate possible ways to eliminate the plant. The Argentinean cactoblastis moth caterpillar was found to be effective. This culminated in the first release of the insects in 1926 in a campaign that lasted until 1939. It was considered one of the most successful examples of biological weed control in the world. The biological section of the Queensland Department of Lands then assumed responsibility of the laboratories and conducted various important campaigns of weed control. When a new office and laboratory building opened in 1967 the complex was re-named The Alan Fletcher Research Station after the then Minister of Lands. Since the research station closed in 2010, the work has continued at the State Government eco-sciences precinct at Boggo Road. On completion of the current project, 29 lots will be available for a range of housing on riverfront land. Page 8 - June 2015 - The Local News

Fete preparations get underway An amazing new adventure playground is a step closer for Graceville State School children as preparations get under way for the school’s popular annual fete. To be held on August 29, the fete is the P&C’s biggest fundraising event and a real showcase of the spirit and sense of community at the Graceville school. Principal Zoe Smith said the event had generated enormous benefits for Graceville students over the years, including airconditioning in the new multi-storey classroom block, electronic whiteboards, musical instruments, computer labs, school hall upgrades and new classroom furniture. Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards facilities such as an adventure playground. “There’s no way that we would be able to put new playgrounds into the school or even upgrade some of the older ones without the fete funds,” she said. “It’s certainly providing something that the children absolutely love that we couldn’t have provided with our usual funding.” Class representatives have started motivating parents and students in the lead-up to the fete as the call goes out for items to be sold on the big day. Budding Master Chefs at the school are starting to cook jams, chutneys, preserves, cakes, biscuits and sweets; all manner of goods are being collected for the Grand Bazaar sale, including books, toys, games, CDs, DVDs and other garage sale items; and in class the prep students are picking up their paint brushes to create little masterpieces. Ms Smith, who earlier this year was appointed as the new permanent principal at the school, said the fete highlighted the community passion that exists in Graceville and surrounding suburbs. She is looking forward to engaging with parents, students and other community members on the day – and has even volunteered to be dropped into a large tank of chilly water in the dunking machine. “I’ve got no problem going into the dunking machine,” she said. “It’ll be a bit of fun.” Fete chairperson Kathy Whitefield urged potential sponsors, especially in the business community, to support the community event this year. “Apart from helping our children, many sponsors find that backing the fete is a great way to connect with parents in the community and promote their business,” she said. For more details, contact sponsorship co-ordinator Stephanie Dow on 0427 793 799 or email gss.fete.sponsorship@gmail.com

Sand sculpture is a rare and intricate art form that takes sand and water and breaths it to life with seemingly impossible beauty. For many people seeing a sand sculpture for the first time is a memorable experience. As well as delicious food, coffees and snacks you can take time out from wandering through the stalls, side show alley and other exhibits by relaxing in the Power Shack licensed area. Rides and amusements for all ages to enjoy with discounted ride arm bands are available through the website www.centenaryrocks.com. The kids will enjoy the daily Geckos wildlife shows and the free entry animal farm sponsored by Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre. Don’t forget the Carfest car show on the Sunday sponsored by Future Auto and Custom RV Creations. If you wish to enter your machine, its $10 entry with plenty of giveaways, prizes and trophies on offer, contact Ashleigh on 0423 917 127 for more information.

Hello Readers Assisting young people to find their purpose in life is probably one of the most rewarding aspects of being a teacher so it was with great pleasure that St John’s teachers and students welcomed back Old Collegians to the Annual Old Collegians Awards breakfast at St Lucia Golf Club this month. The Awards, which mirror the personal qualities we expect of our graduates, are now in their fifth year. Each year the number of nominations has increased and the committee’s work gets harder! This year the Award for Academic Excellence which recognises academic performance, research and leadership in the academic community, was made to Dr Charles Armitage (2003). Charles has completed his PhD at QUT the field of immunology and cell biology specifically investigating the role of antibodies in transporting infection and vaccine development, and frequently speaks at national and international conferences. The Award for Excellence in the Workplace which recognises the significant contribution and success in a chosen industry or profession was made to Sarah Forsythe – Timmerman (2003). Sarah launched an online business Beginning Boutique in 2008 and has one million followers on Facebook and Instagram. She was awarded the number One Australian Social Media Brand outlet, by having the best social media engagement in Australia and the 2014 Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Retail. The award for Outstanding Service to the Community recognises a significant contribution to the local, national or international community was presented to Daniel Huynh (2008). Daniel is a senior account at Becis Chartered Accountants who fosters a positive, optimistic and empowering community around him. He raises funds for many charities gaining sponsorship for physical challenges which include 2 day Cycling events, Tough Mudder, sponsoring a Vietnamese orphanage and hosting community events. The top Award for this year, the Head of College Old Collegian of the Year was made to Hannah Joye (2013). Aside from Hannah’s outstanding contribution in the world sporting arena and a rigorous training schedule, Hannah has not neglected her university, local church, charities, our College or her friends. She holds Scholarships from the Australian Institute of Support and Griffith University and is in her second year of study in a Bachelor of Science, majoring in ecology and conservation. Hannah is currently focused on her training for the Rio Olympics.

A place for TOMORROW’S LEADERS St John’s proudly acknowledges Old Collegian’s Awards recipients for 2015.

Friends of Sherwood arboretum by Andrew Benison

- Brisbane’s living treasure -

For our dedicated volunteers, Sherwood Arboretum definitely beats tackling the garden at home. Where else could you enjoy ‘a back yard’ of more than 1000 Australian native specimen trees, a wetlands rich in bird life and an historic avenue of 72 Queensland Kauri trees dating back to the 1920s. Helping encourage trees and plants to thrive is only part of the appeal. There’s the great satisfaction of being in a team caring for one of Brisbane’s outstanding botanical sites. Our working bees (pictured), on the third Sunday of each month, are helping maintain both a valuable collection of Australian native trees, some rare and endangered, and also caring for an ideal environment for Australian wildlife. For an experienced bird watcher, it is really quite common to see 40 or 50 species of birds in an hour. In fact, more than 160 species of birds have been sighted over the past decade in the Arboretum. The Arboretum also is home to a rich variety of wildlife from insect-eating micro bats and eastern long-necked turtles to striped marsh frogs and echidnas. Those grassed open spaces may be perfect for picnics but they are definitely a ‘no go’ zone for smaller wildlife, which live in constant peril of becoming dinner to hungry predators. With the support of Habitat Brisbane, Council’s bushland restoration program, our volunteer ‘green thumbs’ are working to help create safe and secure ‘pathways’ for our local wildlife. Our specimen tree and habitat team has the goal of establishing these ‘pathways’ between the Brisbane River, an important ‘wildlife corridor,’ and the security of the wetlands’ three protected islands. FOSA welcomes your financial support through membership and your volunteer help during this key 90th anniversary year to secure a brighter future for the heritage-listed Arboretum.

Sherwood Probus Club Update Retirement – everybody’s doing it – but PROBUS does it better.

by Pam Dale

Theatre group members thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Glenn Miller Orchestra at the Concert Hall QPAC in late May. There are so many new musicals coming in 2016. In January we will see Cameron McIntosh’s exciting new production of Les Miserables and in March, John Frost will be bringing the London production of The Sound of Music to Australia. June’s speaker is Richard Edwards, Stroke Foundation Ambassador, who will be speaking on the cause and treatment of strokes. There will not be a speaker in July as that is our birthday lunch. The book group’s selection for June is The Light Between Oceans by M L Steadman. After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast, where the supply boat comes once a season. Our outing for early June is a tour of a Robotic Dairy near Beaudesert with lunch at a nearby hotel. The dinner group now has a new convenor and members met at a local hotel in late May. It is hoped that this wonderful opportunity to enjoy a great night out will continue in future months. The convenor for the computer group is organising a talk about Cloud storage for interested members. In early June, Garden group members will be visiting yet another flood ravaged garden which has recovered well, followed by morning tea and members exchanging plants and cuttings. Probus is a community service activity of Rotary Clubs. Clubs are non-profit making and non-fundraising. It is now a world wide movement in 22 countries. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. We are known as a friendly, caring club where member’s welfare is paramount. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club. Page 12 - June 2015 - The Local News
