Belonging to a community of like-minded people who share common values is very important for children and their families in today’s fast paced world. Such a community helps to provide the stability needed to focus on the things that really matter. The month of May is a time when our College families come together as a community at events, which celebrate the values for which we stand. Our annual Mother’s Day High Tea, on 10 May, not only allowed our Hospitality students the opportunity to showcase their catering skills but also over 200 Mum’s gathered and enjoyed hearing a presentation from Kim McCosker of the cookbook series “4 Ingredients”. In spite of the threatening weather all enjoyed catching up with friends and family and the warmth of community. Our very successful College Carnival on 17 May bought together St John’s families and many people from the surrounding suburbs. Students, Mums and Dad’s, Old Collegians and College supporters enjoyed the stalls, displays and performances. We are very grateful for the efforts of the Carnival convenors and all who gave their time, expertise and donations. We would like to acknowledge our major sponsor for the College Carnival, Heritage Bank Forest Lake.
The Music came to Forest Lake on 28 May when our partner schools, Kinross Wolaroi School – NSW, Radford College – ACT, Scotch College – SA and St Leonard’s College - Vic, came together for the Combined School Music Festival. Around 200 students and teachers participated in workshops led by national and international performers including Mr Peter Ingram, Head of Music at BGS, Dr Ralph Hultgren most recently Head of the Open Conservatorium, Griffith University, Mr Barrie Gott, state examiner for AMEB and Mr Andy Firth, one of the most outstanding clarinet players in the world today. Performance groups workshopped and rehearsed throughout the three days, their efforts culminating in a wonderful Gala Concert in the College Auditorium. Congratulations to all involved on such a fine standard of musicianship on display. Being connected to one another builds the foundations for trust, confidence and success in whatever we undertake in life. The St John’s community has experienced this in May and is the richer for it. How much time do you spend on social media sites? Facebook, twitter and pinterest are fast replacing many hobbies and becoming our default when it comes to down time. I recently listened to a talk that gave some frightening statistics regarding our usage of social media and what it’s doing to our brains. It seems that part of our brain shuts down when we are using these social media sites, in order for our brain to cope with the barrage of information coming in. And when part of our brain is shut down, we become unattentive to those around us. Essentially, said the speaker, we become numb. Apparently, the worst offender of overuse of social media is my age group (which is the 40-somethings, in case you were wondering!). And the tables have, if not completely turned, at least tilted with teenagers being the ones complaining of their parents seeming addiction to their devices and wishing their mum or dad would spend less time on their phones/tablets. The thing I find interesting is that I’m noticing a real trend among my friend circle towards lessening the usage of social media. There is the, now well known, trick of everyone piling their phones in the middle of the table when out for dinner and the first to reach for their phone picks up the bill for the whole table. Families are placing a basket inside the front door in which each family member deposits their device when they come home - and that’s where the device stays for the whole evening. We need to get back to real connection. And I think the tide is starting to turn. We were all charmed by facebook, looking up old school friends and past work colleagues, but I wonder if we’re not all becoming a little jaded and have figured out that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Recognising that really being present with people in person is far better than ‘liking’ someone’s status on facebook and having a pseudo relationship is a big step in the right direction. I’m loving the fact that my friends and I are all realising this at the same time. I recently went away for a night with three friends. The only time a phone came out was to take a photo and we sat and talked for roughly six hours! And the best part was that not one of us felt the need to broadcast our exact movements to the whole of facebook! Despite what the people who make money from social media would have us believe, we can survive without the internet. More than that, we can thrive! I’m excited to notice this hint of disconnecting from our devices and really truly connecting with those around us. How about you? Are you disconnecting in order to reconnect? If not, should you be?

Sherwood / Indooroopilly RSL Sub-Branch Update

y apologies to all for missing last month’s Local News deadline. The pressures associated with the ANZAC Day preparations were immense. Our Dawn Service on ANZAC Day at Corinda was the biggest we have ever held with around 3000 attending. The Graceville service saw over 2000 attending and Services at the Sherwood Cemetery and Oxley were also well up in attendances. It was wonder ful to see the number of schoolchildren in attendance at all the services, with large contingents from the schools joining in the marches at both Corinda and Graceville. Next year will be the centenary of the ANZAC Landings and we will be looking to add some special touches to our Dawn Service in particular. I will have more detail on this closer to the time. As I mentioned in a previous article we have engaged our schools in a history research project related to the Centenary of ANZAC but also extending up to the Centenary of the end of WWI. This will not only give those participating a greater understanding of that conflict and a better understanding of its impact on those serving and their families, but will hopefully encourage the participating students to get a better feel for history through their acquisition of new research skills. I would also like to remind the community that we offer computer training for 0ver 55’s. This covers both computers and Ipads and also Android tablets. These latter two offer relatively inexpensive windows to the world of connectivity. For those wishing to participate on the Wednesday morning sessions, just contact us at the Sub-branch on 3278 6786 and book a session.

Help an animal in need this winter
Have you ever wondered what happened to that poor stray dog you saw walking across the road? Or the stray cat that ran under the car? South East Queensland Animal Rescue is what happens, stepping in to support animals. Based in Brisbane, this non-profit rescue group has taken in and rehomed more than 730 animals since opening its doors in March of 2012. After discovering a litter of underweight and neglected puppies in a bin near her previous workplace, Tam Davis knew she needed to help animals and took on the huge task of founding and running South East Queensland Animal Rescue with the goal to save as many lives as possible. Now she needs your help! Taking in all kinds of animals from cats to dogs to chickens and even peacocks, staff at South East Queensland Animal Rescue have had an unusually busy summer. For non profit rescue groups who rely purely on donations from the public, this can cause a strain and unfortunately result in animals who are in need of new homes being turned away simply because the animal rescue group can’t afford to feed them or don’t have anywhere to house them. South East Queensland Animal Rescue are asking residents for a small donation to assist them in taking in and rehoming even more animals over the coming winter. Donations can include linen, food, animal bedding, bowls and various other animal products. Having participated in the Kokoda Challenge for the last two years, Corinda State High School student, 17 year old Krista is excited to this year be selected for the Kokoda Youth Program and be heading to Papua New Guinea. With only ten teenagers accepted into the program from Brisbane, Krista needed to apply and then undergo an extensive interview before being selected for the coveted position. Wanting to understand more about what our troops went through, Krista participated in the Kokoda Challenge with her school team in 2012 and 2013 with the goal of becoming part of the Youth Program and eventually to complete the Kokoda Trail as an adult. In preparation for the gruelling event, participants must adhere to a strict training program; missing more than one session results in being disqualified from the program. In the twenty weeks leading up to the Challenge, Krista will train every Wednesday afternoon with physical drills up and down the steps of Kangaroo Point Cliffs. Every Sunday will consist of a hike ranging from 12km (full PNG backpack kit) to 49km hikes, one being an overnight hike. On top of these, there is a group training camp, bonding sessions and learning about the soldiers of Kokoda legends, what they did, what they stand for, how they survived etc. They are also expected to do small assignments on these things and present them orally to the group. Training began on 4th May with a fitness assessment and will continue until July with the participants training for the Kokoda Challenge down the Gold Coast. Once completed, they continue their training with the full backpacks that they will take to Papua New Guinea, weighing approximately 13-15kg in preparation for the trip to Papua New Guinea in September to hike the real Kokoda Trail. Once they return from Papua New Guinea, those in the program will then participate in helping a number of charities and non-profit organisations until May 2015. A unique example of Brisbane’s ‘living history’ is being restored in time for a very special birthday. Next March, Sherwood Arboretum celebrates its 90th anniversary since its foundation in 1925 as the city’s first arboretum devoted solely to Australian native trees. With the support of Cr Matthew Bourke, Chairman for Environment, Parks and Sustainability, restoration of the Arboretum’s showpiece, the impressive ‘Sir Matthew Nathan Avenue’, has recently started. The Chairman described the planting of eight advanced Kauri pine trees as a great restoration project. The original eight Agathis robusta trees fell victim to a combination of wild storms in January 2013 and a rising water table along a section of the avenue. Visitors to our heritage-listed Arboretum will have an excellent opportunity in the future to discover the history behind the avenue’s spectacular evergreen trees. The Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA) will be working, in partnership with National Trust Queensland, to provide a digital ‘heritage trail’ of the avenue on a new Sherwood Arboretum website to be launched later this year. FOSA also will be working closely with the OxleyChelmer History Group to provide interpretative signs and also markers in front of each tree to highlight the name of each tree planter. Unlike traditional memorial avenues, the Arboretum avenue provides a unique history of Brisbane through its trees. The avenue records each person, from the then Queensland Governor, Sir Matthew Nathan (pictured) and Brisbane’s first Lord Mayor, William Jolly to eminent scientists, pioneering families and even the local storekeeper, who planted the 72 Kauri pines on 21 March 1925. FOSA will apply for a Council history grant later this year seeking to fund the name tag markers and interpretative signage as part of the 90th celebrations.

Aspiring young writers are invited to enter State Library of Queensland’s annual Young Writers Award for the chance to win $2,000. Now in its nineteenth year, the Young Writers Award is continuing to foster the next generation of Queensland’s budding writing talent, with entries open to Queensland residents aged 18 to 25. “The flourishing careers of previous winners, runners up and entrants from the Young Writers Award have inspired confidence and determination in future writers,” State Librarian Janette Wright said. 2013 winner Kahli Scott’s (pictured) winning short story Lingerie has since been featured on Birdee, an online magazine for young girls, and Kahli has begun work on a novel-length project that expands on the themes and tone of Lingerie using a new set of characters. The 2014 submissions will be assessed by a judging panel comprised of local authors, journalists and editors, including Frances Whiting (Sunday Mail columnist), Simon Groth (Concentrate), Ellen van Neerven (2013 David Unaipon Award winner) and Jarryd Luke (Director, Townsville Writers & Publishers Centre Inc). The Young Writers Award winner and first runner up will receive $2,000 and $500 prize money respectively, along with a 12 month membership to the Queensland Writers Centre and the Australian Writer’s Marketplace online, and admission to a Brisbane Writers Festival seminar and Queensland Writers Centre industry seminar. Entries close at 5pm on Friday 18 July 2014. Gambling Community Grants Some of our local clubs have been successful in the latest round of the Gambling and Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Funds. The Graceville Bowls Club received $26, 300 to replace their roof. Sherwood Girl Guides were successful with their application for $28,000 to go towards the upgrade of their buildings. The Graceville Croquet Club Inc will use the $18,734.50 they have been granted to upgrade their facilities. Caring for our Community Grant Staverton Kindergarten has been successful in their application to the Caring for our Community grant and will receive $3909. This grant supports our community and volunteer groups purchase essential items and equipment to enhance their services. Groups like Staverton play a vital role in our community so it’s important we support them in their efforts to help local residents. 2015 Premier’s ANZAC Prize Secondary students are being urged to enter the 2015 Premier’s Anzac Prize for their chance to experience the historic Anzac Day centenary commemoration at Gallipoli next year. Every year, the participating students are the envy of their peers as they travel halfway across the globe to honour Australian service men and women. Students from Year 8 to Year 11 are eligible to enter the competition and must submit an original two to five minute multimedia presentation on how the ANZAC tradition has shaped the nation, why it is still important and how future generations can keep the spirit alive. Seventy secondary students will have the opportunity to attend the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC campaign at Gallipoli in 2015. Entries opened on 20 April and close on 19 September. Chelmer and District Probus Club Update

The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. At our last meeting, one of our new committee members gave a five minute cameo of her love of growing roses and gave us all inspiration. This is a wonderful way for members to get to know their committee and any member who wishes may also volunteer to share their story at a meeting. Barbara grew up in a cold NSW town, and her parents’ garden was always full of roses. As much as she loved roses, it was not her intention to have a rose garden in Brisbane, that is until she walked into a nursery and saw Princess de Monaco (a beautiful white with deep pink edges). She knew she couldn’t go home without one and she now has three bushes! Soon after this, a friend took her to a sale where they were selling roses for $5 each – she came home with six and so grew Barbara’s rose garden. Barbara said sadly it is almost time to prune and she won’t have huge bowls of multi-coloured roses, like those pictured, for a while. However it will be exciting to see the new growth and she looks forward to her second year of enjoying and sharing these lovely blooms. Barbara has inspired us all to try growing roses. This month David Allen, a fellow Probian from Taringa Probus and exPresident of Probus South Pacific will tell us about his travel adventures on a cruise to Antarctica. David will concentrate on the variety of wildlife they were privileged to meet. Our last outing was to City Hall to see the result of the extensive renovations carried out over the last few years. Brisbane residents are indeed lucky to have such a beautiful and historic building preserved for future generations. This, of course, was followed by lunch at the Red Cross Café with much convivial conversation. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. Graceville Community Garden Update by John Fitz-Walter The Hon Scott Emerson, MP Member for Indooroopilly Minister for Transport and Main Roads recently visited the Graceville Community Garden to see firsthand what happens to old railway sleepers when they are ‘awoken’ into a new usefulness. The Graceville Community Garden members wish to thank Scott for his interest and ongoing support of our gardens. Unfortunately, John has just moved residence to Moreton Bay and his presence will be greatly missed. The terraced area for community members to gather after each Sunday’s working bee and for other special Benarrawa community gatherings is now named the ‘John Ullman Terrace” in thanks for all that John has contributed to the gardens and with the hope that he will pay us a future visit for morning tea. Tim Auld’s raised garden bed timber edging is progressing well, as is Anna Thompson’s management of our three wormery’s or vermicomposting. Thanks also go to Marjorie Heasman for organising our annual Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, as does our thanks to Bunnings Hardware Oxley for hosting this important fundraising event. Thanks to the local tree loppers we have a much needed supply of mulch and the Graceville Newsagent for their supply of old newspapers. Community gardens reach out much further than their immediate boundaries so the thank yous have to be given far and wide! The Peaks To Points Festival on Sunday 20 July will be at the Oxley Creek Common, located near Oxley Creek off Sherwood Road. Amongst the many activities at this festival, the Graceville Community Garden will have its presence, so please mark off this day and be part of this fun filled and informative event. The Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, at the corner of Waratah Ave & Cordalba St, Graceville. Look for the ‘Community Garden’ sign on the corner of Oxley Road and Acacia Avenue to assist with directions. Everyone is invited to be part of the regular working bee and morning tea from 7am to 10am each Sunday. All are welcome.

Oxley Men’s Shed Update Rotary Club of Taylor Bridge update by Jim Pascoe, Newsletter editor
It has certainly been a very busy and fulfilling time for members of the Oxley Men’s Shed over the last few weeks. Members have completed a large donation box for the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre who placed it in the Sherwood Woolworth’s store to receive food donations for needy families in the community. The big success story, however, was the complete restoration of the cement and timber bench seats that were situated around the oval of Oxley State Primary School. This project was only made possible by the generous monetary donation given to us by the Sherwood Services Club. These seats were presented to the school at a combined ceremony on Monday 19th May when the Oxley School officially opened their new garden. Local member Tarnya Smith MLA officiated the opening, with Councillor Milton Dick in attendance. The School Council presented Certificates of Appreciation to Shed President John Brown for the construction of the seats, Matt Conway, President of the Sherwood Services Club and Mark Johnston from the Sherwood/Indooroopilly RSL Sub-Branch for their financial support to the project. John Brown said that this was a three way successful project with the school receiving new seating and both the Men’s Shed and Sherwood Services taking part in a very fulfilling community project. This month’s outing was a visit to the Ipswich Railway Workshops by fourteen of our members. Our June trip is programmed for a visit to Farmfest at Kingsthorpe near Toowoomba where warm clothing will be to the fore. We have been fortunate enough to have received a grant for the implementation of carparking and the installation of a soundproof fence on the premises. We are also receiving some sleepers for the construction of garden beds and edging. The shed in California Rd, Oxley is open from 9.00am until noon every Monday and Tuesday and we invite all men to drop in for a yarn and a cup of tea.
Many of our guests at the Rotary Club of Taylor Bridge inspire us, but one recent guest both inspired us and touched our hearts more than others. So much did David Yohan impress us with his tireless work for PAWES (Providing Awareness With Education and Sport) that we recently presented him with a cheque for $500. David Yohan arrived (as a refugee) from Ethiopia under a humanitarian program and saw the next generation of youth falling into the traps he had experienced such as antisocial behaviour and taking risks within their lives. David founded PAWES as an organisation to use sport and recreation to attract young people who are at risk, marginalised, disadvantaged or from refugee backgrounds. Their slogan is ‘Many shades- one shadow’ and it is making the community a better place by offering physical activity and social interaction as well as education and life skills. Our club’s contribution assisted PAWES purchase much needed equipment and uniforms for its teams to compete in local basketball competitions such as ‘Hoop Dreamz’. David and PAWES have been recognised with numerous Community awards including Quest Business Achiever Award in 2010 and nominations as Young Australian of the Year in 2009 and 2011 and Young Citizen of the year in 2010. Sherwood Probus Club Update

I did forget to mention in my May update that while visiting Government House we were welcomed by the current Governor Penelope Wensley, a very proud grandmother who brought her new grandson down to meet us, who was visiting from Switzerland. Upon leaving we were all presented with a lovely memento; a large book titled All for Queensland - The Governors and The People. This is a most interesting record of Queensland history from the early days of settlement. In early May, together with members from the McGregor Probus Club, we were to visit Emu Valley, the site of the Helidon Air Force WW1/11 Camp. Early that morning our tours organiser received a call to say the site had torrential rain the night before and it was still raining, so our trip was cancelled. Our driver from Highway Coaches suggested we visit the Military Museum at Mudgeeraba, as we had already prepared salad lunches. This museum has so much information about military conflicts in WW1 and WW2, Russia and Malaysia as well as Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. After our lunch we had a guided tour and members were encouraged to have a look for themselves. Members are looking forward to the Margaret Olley Exhibition at Tweed Heads in early September. The book group’s selection for June is The 100 Year Old Man who jumped out of the window and disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. The theatre group is looking forward to the Glen Miller Orchestra and The Lion King later in the year. Due to our club’s busy round of activities, the dinner group has now scheduled their next dinner for late June at a local restaurant. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Assistance Dogs Australia’s newest puppy recruit Brandy, may look cute and cuddly, but in two years’ time she will change the life of someone with a physical disability. Pups like Brandy will open the door to a new independence for their future clients, but to do this they need your help. That’s why Assistance Dogs Australia is sniffing out puppy raisers and sitters in Brisbane to be “puppy parents” to the litter of seven puppies Labrador mum Dee Dee gave birth to recently. “Raising a puppy lets you give back to the community with the added bonus of the pitter-pattering of puppy paws,” said Assistance Dogs Australia’s Senior Trainer, Cherie Bekker. “Puppy raisers and sitters will teach these pups to undertake tasks that are difficult or even impossible for people with physical disabilities to achieve. They’ll teach them to pick up all sorts of objects such as mobile phones and keys and make sure they are able to alert bark when required. “You can also take the pups to the shops, cafes, on public transport and even to the cinema as it is all these experiences that will help them become an Assistance Dog.” The pups will be helped in their quest to be Assistance Dogs by experienced Senior Trainer Cherie who will be there with raisers and sitters every step of the way during training, providing them with instruction and support for the 14 months the puppies spend on their “L” plates before returning to the National Training Centre in Heathcote, Sydney for Advanced Training. “The best part of being a puppy raiser or sitter is helping to change someone’s life by training a fantastic Assistance Dog,” Brisbane Puppy Raiser Joanna Zietek said. “To see the impact that Brandy will make to someone with a physical disability one day is priceless.” Assistance Dogs Australia is a charity that trains Labradors and Golden Retrievers to give freedom and independence to people with physical disabilities. Assistance Dogs do everyday tasks for their recipients that people with physical disabilities find difficult, if not impossible, to achieve, like opening and closing doors, pressing the button at the traffic lights, retrieving dropped items and even getting the phone. Each dog takes two years to train and is worth an investment of $27,000 but are placed with recipients free of charge. Our pets, like their owners, are living longer for a number of reasons. Advances in veterinary medicine enable vets to successfully diagnose and treat more conditions, and better diet and preventative health care such as heartworm prevention, means our pets reach an older age than in previous years. It is always a good idea to look at the changes you need to make in the way you look after your pet as they age. Remember that, in general, cats are seniors at around seven years of age, the equivalent to 56-60 human years. With dogs, it is a little more complex and ageing is linked to your dogs weight and breed size. Giant and large breeds are mature at five to six years, while medium dogs reach senior years at around eight years and toy and small breeds are mature at nine to ten years. If you look at the statistics, 36% of dogs and 40% of cats are in the mature age category. Many senior pets remain healthy and active for most of their old age, although the risk of developing a number of serious health problems increases with age. These include osteo-arthritis, kidney problems, liver disease, problems associated with obesity, dental disease, endocrine disease, heart disease and cancers. The changes associated with ageing often include reduced activity levels, decreased sensitivity to hearing, sight, taste and smell, changes in body weight and condition, specific health problems and behavioural changes that can include senility and dementia type symptoms and toileting changes eg old cats can forget they are litter trained. It is important to talk to your vet and have a plan to examine and screen your older pet to recognise any disease process present and often the course of a disease can be markedly influenced by the presence of another disease, so blood screening is more important in your mature pet. Talk to your vet about the nutritional requirements for your mature pet. The points to consider include: energy requirements; highly digestible protein sources; joint health; skin and coat health; cognitive function; and antioxidants. There are mature dog and cat foods available that provide a complete and balanced diet for the older pet and their changed dietary requirements. These include high palatability and digestibility, additional vitamin, antioxidants and trace elements,as well as additives for joint health, skin and coat health and urinary tract health. Obviously to keep your mature pet looking good and feeling great does require a bit more attention than when they were younger but they are worth it.
