Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis This year, our family routine has had to change significantly. With only one child now at school and the other doing a gap year and not having her ‘P’s’ yet, we find ourselves with only a semblance of routine from one week to the next. It’s funny how much we rely (well, I do, anyway!) on the rhythm of life. Whether it’s a fast rhythm or a slower one, it brings a sense of order to our days and usually means we are more productive and have a clearer head space. Yet, the fact remains that nothing stays the same, and we must, indeed, accommodate and adapt to the changes that life brings us; we need to make adjustments. The word ‘adjustment’ is quite interesting, definition wise. The fourth and fifth definitions are as follows: adjustment: 4. the act of bringing something into conformity with external requirements: the adjustment of one’s view of reality. 5. harmony achieved by modification or change of a position: They worked out an adjustment of their conflicting ideas. The act of bringing something into conformity with external requirements. Sounds negative doesn’t it? For most of us, conformity is a dirty word and we will avoid ‘conforming’ at all costs. In fact, look on any social media at the moment and you’ll find nearly every ‘self-help’ message is generally about encouraging people not to conform. And absolutely, there are times we shouldn’t conform. The world would be a bland and boring place if we all conformed about everything. So, here, making an adjustment is something we might well buck against. But I love the fifth definition - harmony achieved by modification or change of position. By making a few adjustments in our lives, sometimes, harmony is the end result. Just tweaking things slightly can make a huge difference and bring cohesiveness to situations. We all need to make adjustments, don’t we? Our youngest is having to make some big adjustments as she steps into high school; our elder daughter needs to adjust to life outside the school routine; and we need to adjust our lifestyles and habits to make room for the changes in our girls’ lives. It’s important to be able to make adjustments. And it’s important to teach our children how to adjust too. Life will never be smooth or simple or easy, no matter how much we want, or strive for, it to. Not teaching them to adjust, to bend with the ebb and flow of life is to do them a great injustice. If we are always trying to make ‘the world’ fit around them, instead of encouraging them to be adaptable, we are setting them up for hardships and failure once they are out from under our care. Many researchers cite that the ability to be adaptable is essential to success - and not just in a material sense, but in a human sense. We need to be able to make adjustments and be adaptable in order to not just survive but to thrive. What adjustments do you need to make in your life that could bring harmony into your world?

Nanette Lilley book signing at Marriotts Well known business owner and resident, Nanette Lilley, has lived in the area for 40 years and her real estate agency Nanette Lilley Property is now in it’s 32nd year. If anyone is qualified to write on the history of one of Brisbane’s most loved streets, Laurel Avenue, then it would be Nanette. Nanette kindly took time out to answer some questions for The Local News on her latest achievement. What inspired you to write ‘Welcome to Laurel Avenue’? I was marketing a property called ‘The Laurels’ in 2003 with an associate, John Woods, who had helped me to write a history of the property. After a very satisfactory sale we had our first thoughts about writing a history of the street. Why has it taken over ten years to complete? We wrote and researched some early history of Laurel Avenue and the surrounding area and interviewed a number of residents. The book was under way when John was offered a business opportunity in the city. I did not have the computer skills at that time and had the responsibility of managing a thriving real estate business so the book was put on hold. However, I always had it in mind to complete the project and at the beginning of 2014, then armed with computer skills and encouraged by another local historian, I set about re-organising the manuscript and carrying out numerous interviews with local residents. I also had valuable assistance from Dr John Armstrong, a long term resident of the street, and past resident Dr Peter Vincent who, together with their wives Merrie and Jennie, provided me with interesting material and patiently proofread my ongoing manuscripts. I also had assistance from many other locals but the person who enabled it all to come together and go to the publisher was my Editor Gerard Benjamin, a historian from Newstead. He was amazing and I will be eternally grateful. What was the most enjoyable aspect of writing this book? I would have to say it was the tremendous interest and enthusiasm shown by the residents, meeting new people and the excitement of seeing it all come together. Who will enjoy reading ‘Welcome to Laurel Avenue’? The book is of historical interest and has already been widely read by present and past residents and many people who have had some connection to the area or street. It has brought a lot of nostalgic memories to many as they were so happy growing up in Laurel Avenue and the feedback I have had has been amazing to say the least. Where can residents buy a copy? The books are available from my office, Nanette Lilley Property at 291 Honour Ave, Graceville, and Marriott Books at 605 Oxley Road, Corinda. The selling price is $30 for one copy or $25 each for two or more. I will also be attending a book signing launch at Marriott Books on Saturday 14th March from 9.30 till 11am and look forward to meeting interested readers.
Chelmer & District
PROBUS CLUBupdate by Coral Rieichman
MEMBERSHIP & PUBLICITY OFFICER
The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. In February, a group of our members went on a most informative guided tour of the two city cathedrals – St Stephen’s Catholic Cathedral in Elizabeth Street and St John’s Anglican Cathedral in Ann Street. Both cathedrals are devout places of worship but also have impressive architecture and wonderful stained glass windows and a varied and interesting display of artworks. We learnt of the history of the Cathedrals and their place in Brisbane’s history. Our February speaker was Denis Peel, from the Annerley-Stephens History Group, whose topic was ‘Researching your House or Family Home’. The ASHG has access to ‘The Frank Corley House Photo Project’ which is held by the State Library and covers Greater Brisbane, Toowoomba, Ipswich and Redcliffe. Dennis gave us an insight into what information is currently available and how to research our family home with many very useful tips. Our next meeting will be an interesting trip down the years and into the future of our very own local Regal Twin Art House Cinemas. We are all looking forward to this talk as we all have fond memories of the Regal and all appreciate the quality entertainment provided on our very doorstep. Our March meeting is our annual AGM, a very important time of year when all committee members step down and a new committee is formed to lead the Club into the following year with an exciting program for all members to enjoy. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. For further information please ring Coral on 3379 7540. The Local New News ws - March 2 2015 015 - Pag Page ge 5
Some people think that once a child enters school the time for lots of play should cease so that teachers can get down to the serious business of teaching children how to read, write and do mathematics. But studies show that the most powerful tool for fostering brain development and the growth of neural pathways, in young children is physical movement and play. Children should be encouraged to play outside, explore the environment, and participate in activities such as walking along balance beams, climbing into cubbies, digging in sand and playing with pebbles. With the introduction of touch screen, mobile devices many children of today are spending significant amounts of time sitting still, looking at a screen, their only movement a simple ‘swipe’ to open a new page. Participation in perceptual motor activities helps children to develop stronger perceptual and motor skills and builds neural pathways. These pathways are the connections by which information travels through the brain and the more neural pathways the more likely learning will come easily. When a child does not have properly developed perceptual motor skills, he or she is more likely to experience difficulty in learning basic academic skills.
At St John’s Anglican College we are acutely aware of the need for a balanced approach to education which incorporates plenty of perceptual motor experiences for our youngest students. We want all our students to have strong foundations for future academic learning and so we ensure that every child participates in perceptual motor activities. Children in Kindergarten and Prep all benefit from regular lessons with our qualified Physical Education teacher and they learn academic subjects through the right balance of handson experiences, technology and purposeful play. Our newly developed Prep Playground provides that something extra, because while the children are playing on the equipment, stepping stones and balance beams they are at the same time developing those all-important perceptual motor skills, so essential for future learning. St John’s is the place where your child grows with the support of the whole community. Long-time Sherwood resident, Betty Rowles has one very special reason for encouraging our community this month to celebrate 90 years of one of Brisbane’s best-loved green spaces. Betty and her sister, Margaret Hughes, are the two daughters of Mr Bill Hodgson, Council’s first caretaker appointed to look after the city’s brand new arboretum, officially opened on 21 March 1925. The sisters have fond memories of standing behind their Dad on his horse-drawn mower in the early 1930s as he cut the grass in a very sparse-looking Sherwood Arboretum, a far cry from today’s home of more than 1000 Australian native specimen trees. Both sisters also remember their Mum, Olive, the daughter of the pioneering family, Joseph Berry, serving afternoon tea to Mr Ernest Bick, the Curator of the City Botanic Gardens, during his regular arboretum visits to plant new tree species. Most of all, Betty and Margaret recall the fun of impromptu roof-top concerts on Council’s water-supply ‘Valve House’, which provided the perfect ‘stage’ for happy performances for their young friends. Betty will be among the guests, including Brisbane’s Lord Mayor, Cr Graham Quirk and Mr Ross McKinnon, the recently retired curator of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, for the Arboretum’s 90th anniversary, on Saturday 21 March, at Jolimont Street. The celebrations will be off to an action-packed start, with the help of the Sherwood Forest Runners, with a one kilometre ‘fun run’ for children 12 years and under, along the historic Kauri Avenue from 8.30am. It’s important to register now for this free ‘fun run’ by sending a brief email, with the subject heading ‘fun run’ to the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA) at info@sherwoodarboretum. com.au or by calling 3278 6525. The Lord Mayor will be presenting ‘fun run’ and ‘lucky door’ prizes during a brief anniversary ceremony starting at 9am. The Arboretum’s special guests, including Betty, will be planting a 90th anniversary grove with the help of the Sherwood Scouts, which provided the original guard of honour for the 1925 ceremony. FOSA is inviting all guests and the community to enjoy a fund-raising barbecue from 9.30am to celebrate this landmark birthday of Brisbane’s heritage-listed arboretum.

Apart from the musicals already mentioned in earlier months, our theatre group is also looking forward to Strictly Ballroom. Baz Luhrmann always said he wanted to bring the show back to Brisbane where it all started at the old Cremorne Theatre during Expo. Local dancers were part of this original production. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is returning to Brisbane in late May by popular demand for a concert spectacular featuring America’s finest musicians paying tribute to the spirit of ANZAC. An evening of nostalgia and unforgettable music is not to be missed. Due to inclement weather conditions, our previously advised speaker for February was unable to attend and has been rescheduled for later in the year. One of our members gave an interesting and illustrated talk about his recent trip to Canada. There will not be a speaker for the March meeting as that is our AGM. Our April speaker will be a representative from Red Cross who will speak about basic first aid. The lunch group has returned to meeting on the second Wednesday of the month at a local Golf Club where the Probus slogan of Fun, Fellowship and Friendship applies. The book group continues to meet at a member’s home. A discussion list is planned for the coming year. On the first Wednesday in March the garden group will be visiting the Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens. Scrabble continues to be played at a nearby club where newcomers are welcomed and taught the rules of the game. Probus is a community service activity of Rotary Clubs. Clubs are non-profit making and non-fundraising. It is now a world wide movement in 22 countries. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club. CONTACT The Local News ... if you know someone who should be recognised for their contribution to the community On Sunday 1 March, the Clean Up Australia campaign celebrated its 25th anniversary. Since 1990, around 570,000 volunteers have removed 288,650 tonnes of rubbish from 145,754 sites across the country. As in previous years, the Rotary Club of Brisbane Taylor Bridge focussed its attention on the Walter Taylor Reserve, beneath the southern end of the iconic bridge that gave the Club its name. After the recent heavy rains, there was plenty of debris along the banks of the river to clear. Members of the Club gathered at the Reserve at 10am on the day and ended the morning with a BBQ.

During my last term as your local member, I delivered the Myla Terrace noise barrier, new facilities in our local schools, commenced the upgrade of the Graceville rail station, installed flashing speed lights in school zones and supported community and sporting groups in their applications for grant funding. I look forward to delivering more services and facilities for the electorate and continuing to support community groups. Thank you to those who contributed to my campaign whether by giving up time to man a polling booth or to stand at railway stations, displaying signs in your yards, or your words of support – it was much appreciated.

This has been a long hot summer with high humidity, rain and storms. These are perfect conditions for a lot of infections in your pet and particularly ear infections. Ear infections are very common especially in dogs with ears that hang down and curly poodle coats. The condition usually presents as redness which is the inflammation, with swelling and pain associated with the external canal (otitis externa). A more serious ear disease can involve the middle ear (otitis media). There are a number of causes of ear infections and these include dirty ears or foreign bodies in the canal itself to various allergies. They can also be caused by specific mite infections and the presence of certain bacteria, fungi and yeasts can contribute to the infection. There are some breeds that, due to their genetic makeup and anatomy, may be predisposed to ear infections and the top of the list would be poodles because they have narrow ear canals, often with a lot of hair in them and their ears hang down which reduces air flow. Some skin conditions may predispose a dog to ear infections also. Vets see a lot of ear infections during summer due to moisture being retained in the ear. This condition is similar to ‘swimmers ear’ in humans. As always, prevention is better than cure and it is advisable to use an ear cleaning and drying solution regularly through summer if your dog goes swimming or after it is bathed to prevent infection and dry the ear canals out. You will be able to tell if your dog has an ear infection as they often scratch excessively at the opening of the ear canal, shake their heads or rub their ear on the ground or carpet. Often the inside of the ear is red and can have a foul smell with or without discharge. You need to seek veterinary attention if you notice these symptoms. Remember, there is a golden rule for cleaning ears nothing smaller than an elbow in a dogs ear, never use cotton buds as this may push debris further down and block the ear canal passage. Talk to your vet about an ear cleaner for your dog, there are some that you can use once a day. If your pet is prone to ear problems or swims a lot, use the drops regularly through the year. When you put the drops in your dogs ear, rub at the base of the ear and then wipe the ear out with cotton wool. The tip is to do this regularly to prevent infections through the year and always after the dog is bathed or has been swimming.

The Oxley and District Garden Club is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. Its objectives are to encourage a love of gardening and to help members gain knowledge of propagation and care of plants. To meet these objectives, we hold monthly meetings, usually at a member’s home, to which we invite guest speakers. Our meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, except December and January, from 10 am. We hold competitions and have a ‘trade table’, so that members can obtain plants from other members. Plants which are old-fashioned and not available commercially are often found on the ‘trade table’. Visitors are welcome. Some of the topics which will be covered by guest speakers this year are: potting and dividing orchids; subtropical gardening; roses and their care; bulbs; cordylines; floral art. In March, Michael will be demonstration the dividing and potting of orchids. As the venue changes each month, please ring Meg on 3379 2015 to find out where the Club will be meeting next.

Benarrawa CDA Update
by Jenna MacDonnell, Communities Development Worker
Throughout the month of March, Benarrawa CDA will focus on acknowledging and celebrating women from the local community and beyond. This focus is in line with International Women’s Day, which takes place each year on March 8. This year the theme for the day is ‘Make it Happen’. Activities at Benarrawa throughout the month include an International Women’s Day morning tea, which will see women come together to share stories of how they are making something worthwhile happen in their local community. The regular Community Lunch, which is open to all community members to attend, will also focus on celebrating women. Community Lunches are held at Benarrawa from 12-2pm on the first Tuesday of every month. Other regular groups and activities held at Benarrawa CDA and in its garden surrounds include Nature Babes at Benarrawa, every Wednesday from 9.30-11.30am; Graceville Community Garden working bees every Sunday from 7am; the Southwest Network of Carers gathering from 10am-noon on the fourth Wednesday of every month; and the newly-created Benarrawa Women’s Creative Circle, meeting every Tuesday 10am-noon. Benarrawa is also involved in initiatives that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, newly-arrived refugees and migrants, people living with mental health challenges, and individuals and groups impacted by floods and other natural disasters. Please contact John or Jenna at Benarrawa CDA for more information on any of these events and activities. Phone 3379 9925 or email benarrawa@westnet.com.au. Benarrawa CDA is located at 79 Waratah Avenue, Graceville.
Oxley Men’s Shed Update
by Jim Pascoe
There have been four projects in hand over the last month. Members have been busy restoring wardrobes, chairs and a sewing machine table. The first project completed has been the restoration of the St Matthew’s font which looks terrific. The font was made from silky oak and was donated to the church by the church Sunday school in 1923. Shed manager Ken Manton oversaw the work of removing, repairing and replacing the font in the church. We have had a guest from the Public Trustee and also Michael Beatty from the RSPCA who both gave interesting talks and information to our members. Our first trip for the year was a visit to the Herbarium at Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens where members were given an interesting talk by a very knowledgeable guide. Shed members have obtained their blue cards and are looking forward to being involved in a mentoring project with students from Corinda State High School. This project will continue over a number of weeks. We meet at 9.00am every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at St John’s Anglican church in California Road, Oxley and welcome all men to come and join us. For further enquiries, please call Shed President John Brown on 3379 6096.
SHERWOOD / INDOOROOPILLY LY RSL Sub-Branch Update by Kevin Alcock ock k
By the time you read this ANZAC Day will be about six weeks away. We have been getting our arrangements in place for our various services. This year, the services at Corinda (the dawn service) will start 30 minutes earlier than usual. This is because the march in the city has been brought forward by 30 minutes. As a result, all of our services with the exception of the one at Bannerman Park Oxley, will commence 30 minutes earlier. This means that those attending the dawn service should aim to assemble by 4.30 a.m.. We have a different format for the dawn service. We have had problems with not all being able to hear the service in the past. This year we have had sound experts in and we will have a lot of extra sound equipment and will have a sound technician at the service. We will have the Brisbane Municipal Concert band on the club balcony and both the New Zealand and Australian anthems will be played. We will have a stage erected in front of the Croll Memorial wall, so all attending will this year be able to see the ceremony clearly. As this year is the centenary of the ANZAC landings, we hope to have a really good attendance and I look forward to seeing you there. Page 12 - March 2015 - The Local News
