I have been thinking lately about how important it is to buy and shop locally. You might have noticed that ‘local’ is pretty important to us! Wherever possible, I try to purchase either in one of our publication areas or in the area where we live ourselves. And I do so, even if it means it’s a little bit more expensive, or they have to order it in. To me, shopping locally is thinking long term, instead of short term. Short term thinking is all about ‘me’ - I want it now, at a cheap price regardless of who owns the company, how many people they have laid off or cut back the hours of, or whether the money you are handing over will go offshore. Long term thinking is all about the community and supporting our neighbour. It’s about understanding and caring where our dollar goes. It’s about supporting the local shop owner so he can then employ local teenagers who might otherwise find ‘other’ things to do with their time. It’s also about thinking longterm for our local economy. If we don’t support these independent products, services and stores, soon they won’t be there as an option at all. And we are naive if we think the big chain stores are going to keep their prices down once the small local competition is gone. Prices will skyrocket, and we will have no option but to pay them. I don’t want to do that! And I really don’t want to do that knowing that I was one of the ones who helped create that situation. Shopping locally is also about building relationships. If I’m going to shop regularly in a local store, it’s much more likely that I’ll forge a friendship with the staff of that store. And what happens when we are friendly with staff? They are accommodating and friendly right back, particularly as you are showing loyalty and helping them stay in business. The owner also knows that there is a greater chance he/she will see you in the street, or in the school carpark so will be motivated to give you even greater service! And to those of us in business in the local area - take care of your customers who faithfully come and spend their hard earned dollars with you. Treat them nicely! It’s amazing to me how many business owners don’t treat their patrons with respect or any sign that they are grateful that person is shopping there. It’s a two way street isn’t it? As consumers, we need to give the local business owner a chance, before we decide to take our custom outside the area. And as business owners, we need to value and appreciate those who do make the choice to shop locally and support the independent businesses in the area. If as business owners, we keep in mind how we like to be treated as a customer, we may just find there is more synergy between the two, which can only be good for our communities and those of us who live in them.

During outbreaks of Parvovirus disease or in endemic areas, young dogs are at great risk. Last month we saw two puppies with this disease, both not vaccinated. Both died. Parvovirus is a devastating disease that affects mostly unvaccinated puppies, resulting in vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, dehydration, suffering and death. There are approximately 1000 cases being recorded each year, although many cases are not reported. Most of the cases diagnosed were accurately diagnosed with an ELISA tests. Puppies have immature immune systems and need the protection of vaccines against this disease, the vaccination regime can begin at six weeks of age, so the puppy has some protection before it moves to its new home. The reason for these disease outbreaks is that herd immunity has dropped to levels that can no longer prevent disease distribution, and new cases develop as the virus spreads through a new population. Parvovirus is a disease that is far more common than many pet owners realise. The reality is that many dogs that contract the virus do not show clinical signs, such as vomiting and diarrhoea. It has long been recognised that a high proportion of parvovirus infections in a dog are subclinical. Dogs that actually develop severe clinical illness are typically young, rapidly growing puppies with concurrent gatro-intestinal bugs or pathogens such as worms Giardia, gut bacteria and viruses. What happens in the population is that the risk arises from sub-clinically infected animals shedding the disease and spreading it to the young and vulnerable population. These dogs are a constant source of infection. The way to reduce the problem of parvovirus is to use an effective parvovirus vaccine, Talk to your vet about the right vaccine protocol for your puppy or dog. The most effective protection is vaccination and keeping your puppy at home and not in contact with other dogs whose vaccine status is unknown. It is important to raise awareness about this disease and make sure your dog is vaccinated.

During April, the children and staff were delighted to have an indigenous educator, Sharron, visit the centre. Known also by her indigenous name, Mirii, which when translated is Star, Sharron brought a wonderful cultural experience embedded in the true spirit of relationship. She shared with the children her language, dance, stories of family traditions and connections with our native animals and plants and insights into the wonderful spiritual beliefs of Australia’s first people. Children and staff alike felt both captivated and connected through her presence, her optimism and pride and her enthusiasm to embrace our cultural similarities and differences. Director of CSCK, Anne Marlay reflected on the powerful impact of this educational experience in developing cultural awareness in the wider kindy community. “I have found a deepening connection and understanding emerging from my professional and curricular focus on Culture and its place in our early childhood program,” she said. “Building on this experience is a personally emerging realisation of my relationship to Australia and its first peoples and their indigenous heritage.”

After a very successful local Probus Friendship Day, Sherwood Probus is looking forward to an interesting year with lots of activities. The Friendship Day catered for 155 Probians from 16 western suburbs clubs. Hopefully other clubs in the area will continue this annual event. The theatre group recently enjoyed Driving Miss Daisy starring those iconic actors Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones. Earlier, we saw Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap which celebrated its diamond anniversary. This show has been playing continuously over the past 60 years in London’s West End theatres. A recent show enjoyed was End of the Rainbow, a story about Judy Garland with many of her songs. Club members are looking forward to some day trips including Jondaryan Woolshed in early May and a tour of the new ABC studios at Southbank. Planning is well advanced for members to join a five night tour package at Bayview Tower at Yeppoon. This includes rail travel on the Tilt Train where pensioner passes can be used. Our garden group met at a member’s home in March and planned their activities for the whole year. The dinner and lunch groups continue to meet monthly at local restaurants and clubs. A good time is had by all with great food and great company. Mah Jong and Scrabble groups continue to attract members who enjoy a morning or afternoon of good friendship and using brain power. Both groups welcome new members who will be taught the rudiments of the game. Book group members have made their selections for the year. The April selection was Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult, while in May members will be reading Journey to a Stone Country written by Alex Miller. Probus is a community service activity of Rotary Clubs. Renovation and refurbishment Grant Program Staverton Kindergarten, Sherwood Community Kindergarten, St Thomas’s Riverview Kindergarten and Indooroopilly Kindergarten and Preschool have all been successful in the latest round of funding under the Renovation and Refurbishment Grant Program. This Department of Education, Training and Employment grant is to support early childhood education centres and care facilities to deliver quality kindergarten programs. The funding is to assist the centres to enhance their facilities and day-to-day operations. I congratulate theses kindergartens and preschools on their commitment to providing quality early childhood education and care for children in our community. Gambling Community Benefit Fund Three local organisations have been successful in the latest round of the Gambling Communities Benefit fund. Glenleighden School, Western Districts Netball Association and Cerebral Palsy League Fig Tree Pocket Services each received a grant to undertake works to enhance their facilities and provide better services for our community members. It is heartening to see grants going to such well-deserved recipients. The Gambling Communities Benefit Fund provides one-off grants to not for profit organisations with revenues sourced from the gaming taxes placed on golden casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines. ANZAC Day I was honoured to attend three ANZAC Day events in the Indooroopilly electorate this year. Beginning at the citizens’ march and dawn service at the Kokoda Memorial Stone at the Sherwood Services Club, I then attended a service at the Boer War Memorial at the Sherwood Cemetery, followed by the Indooroopilly service at Keating Park. An ANZAC Day service is a humbling and emotional experience. It is a privilege to attend these events every year and pay tribute to our fallen soldiers. Lest we forget. Nominations open for the Queensland Carers Advisory Council Carers or people who are passionate about supporting carers are being asked to nominate to become a member of the Queensland Carers Advisory Council. Eight representatives from Government and non-government carer and grandparent carer organisations are being sought for the two year term. The council plays an important role in working closely with the Queensland Government to ensure carers receive ongoing support and to have strategies in place that recognise the contribution carers make, for the people they care for and the broader community. I urge anyone with a broad awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by carers and with strong links to carer organisations and networks to nominate for a place on the council. Local at-risk children to get more support Some of South-West Brisbane’s most vulnerable children and their carers will benefit from ongoing support thanks to a renewed funding commitment from the Queensland Government. Member for Mount Ommaney and Assistant Minister for Child Safety Tarnya Smith said the Inala Community House would receive more than $410,000 each year over the next three years to protect and support young people who are at risk. “The Inala Community House is working hard to provide the support services that some of our children and their families need,” Mrs Smith said. “Where it is not possible for families to stay safely together, Inala Community House helps us provide somewhere safe for children and young people to live.” Child Safety Minister Tracy Davis said the Newman Government was committed to ensuring children and young people were safe and supported. “Child protection is everyone’s business,” Ms Davis said. Ms Davis said the Commission of Inquiry, which is currently looking into Queensland’s child protection system, was formulating recommendations to improve child safety. “We want to give Queensland kids the chance of a bright future and the Inquiry will help us chart a roadmap for the next 10 years,” she said.

Bronze reward at National competition Lachlan Cramond and Tobias Smith from the Centenary Rowing Club both won Bronze Medals at Sydney but sadly had to crew with other rowing clubs. Lachlan Cramond won two Bronze Medals gaining the best club result, his first in the U17 Quad Scull and the second in the U17 Double Scull. The Centenary squad fielded one of the smallest teams the Club has ever sent to the Nationals, but a difficult training programme resulting from the January floods may well have caused this. Centenary Rowing Club member, Lachlan Cramond Cramond who is in Grade 11 at Centenary State High School was lucky brings home two Bronze medals. to compete at the Nationals this year as he had not been regarded as good enough to gain a place in the Centenary Team but was instead part of the Coomera Anglican College team. Australian Coach Alan Bromiley very quickly picked up Cramond as he was looking for an extra oarsman for his Under 17 Quad Four from Coomera Anglican College. Mr Bromiley said yesterday that he only uses two criteria to select his crews – sculling trials and a stop watch. “For me this has proved to gain the best results at National competition for in the last 15 National competitions I have had rowers compete I have always returned with either Gold, Silver or Bronze. In regards to Lachlan Cramond he has to be one of the fittest and strongest young men I have ever come across in my coaching career and though not tall is ideal as either a bow or stroke oarsman in a light crew. I hope very much that he will be able to fit into any future crew that I am coaching as he is in my opinion a fantastic find for Queensland rowing,” Mr Bromiley said. Cramond said that he would love to be coached by Mr Bromiley again. “Whatever we did was always as a crew - we ate together, we trained together, discussed the result of each training row together and had team meetings every night,” Cramond said. “The regatta was simply huge with a massive number of boats, trailers, spectators and of course everywhere you looked there seemed to be rowers in their thousands. Gaining two Bronze Medals has made me re-set my goals to want to become a better oarsman to maybe one day represent Queensland,” Cramond said.
Chelmer Probus Club Update The re-established Chelmer Probus Club meets in Corinda on the fourth Wednesday of the month and welcomes new members from Chelmer, Graceville, Corinda, Oxley and other nearby suburbs form. The club was entertained on 24 April by guest presenter Malcolm Thorne on the topic “Fifty Years of Comic Verse with Stanley Holloway”. The guest speaker on 22 May will be Adele Rice, recently retired principal of Milpera State High School who will speak on “Milpera - The World in One School”. Milpera provides quality on-arrival education services in English to prepare students to transition into further education and Adele will speak about the challenges of meeting the educational and social needs of this diverse community of students from many countries.
On 26 June Helen Coughlan will speak about her experiences in Cambodia and recent developments including re-building the agricultural industry and providing better access to education for girls. The club is also arranging movie mornings followed by lunch. Let’s get back to our best - Spinal Health Week Back pain is a common ailment for local residents. It’s long been known to public health experts that 85% of us all will be disabled with back pain at some stage of our lives. Over two million Australians have back problems each year. The consequences of back pain are serious – it affects families, lifestyle and productivity. And people with longlasting back pain report 2.5 times more other disorders, such as depression. One in eleven residents in the local area can be expected to have back problems this year. And one of the most powerful preventative health steps you can take is to improve your postural fitness. That’s the message from the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) which is urging residents to Get Back to Your Best this Spinal Health Week (20 – 26 May). Local Chiropractors Drs Michael and Keith Charlton have called upon Forest Lake residents to take up the challenge of improving their postural fitness. “Postural fitness helps you lead an optimal healthy lifestyle; reduce muscle fatigue and improve your postural endurance,” Dr Michael said. “Postural fitness means optimal spinal alignment. It gives you greater strength and endurance, better coordination and balance”. To take control of your postural fitness, you need to think and walk tall and pick an exercise plan that strengthens your core muscles and if needed, to rehabilitate your spine. Dr Michael suggests exercise such as brisk walking, yoga and/or swimming as good choices to improve spine function.
But Dr Michael also says we need to pay attention to how we sit and how long we sit, especially since some spend up to 16 hours a day sitting. Recent research shows that those who sit more than eight hours a day shorten their lives. Tips for improving your posture at work include: try standing when you’re on the phone for extended periods; during meetings, take regular stretch breaks or make them walking meetings; while working at your computer, sit tall, take short breaks to stretch and stand; check and adjust your position regularly. Rosellas (pictured) are not only great for making jam but they make a nice tea - tasty and refreshing and, in my opinion, tastier than rosehip. In fact, many herb teas are a great alternative to their caffeine-laden cousins and can become quite addictive (in a good way!) Many gardeners who like herb teas grow some in their own gardens. Herbs like a sunny, well-drained position, particularly sage. Don’t ever put saucers under herb pots as they hate wet feet (except for mint). If herbs are grown in pots a good potting mix is important and fertilizer should be added once a month. Too easy!

Lemon grass. It makes a light and refreshing tea, particularly when combined with lemon basil, sage and lemon balm. Chop up only the flat, top part of the lemon grass plant and infuse with the other herbs. It must be remembered that lemon grass is a grass and so should be chopped back to control its growth or grown in a pot. Thyme and sage tea is an excellent tea for colds and sore throats particularly when combined with honey and ginger. Thyme is easy to grow and is attractive in a rock garden. Chamomile tea is an excellent drink any time of the day but if drunk before bed it helps to relax the body and mind, bringing satisfying sleep. Sage may also be added to the brew. Chamomile is a lovely little plant with daisylike flowers and it’s the flowers which are used for tea. Peppermint tea is one of the most popular herb teas in the world and a small amount of peppermint may be added to most herb teas for flavour. On hot days try making a weak tea using 12g. peppermint and 500ml. boiling water. Add the juice of one lemon. Cool in the fridge and add ice and a sprig of fresh mint. Peppermint plants like a lot of water and are best left in a large pot as, like common mint, they can become invasive. Enjoy. New gardeners are always welcome at the Oxley Garden Club. Children plot at Graceville Community Garden Children who come to the GCG are always plotting and scheming and while some may think that they are up to no good, at the gardens it is always up to much good. How to find time to look after a veggie garden is the major hang up people have about growing their own food. A way to overcome this is to start off with weeding one square metre of the garden and then plant it out. It may lead to two square metres or even four - that is up to you. Lolo Huubein’s book ‘One Magic Square’ gives plenty of ideas of what to plant in that square metre. In a short time it will provide you with fresh food. Your depressive moods will evaporate when you tend your magic square, and you will discover other micro worlds than the world you thought you lived in. Boredom will subside and you will do a daily three minutes bending and stretching routine without being aware of it. Hand watering the square will become your meditation. Grow vegetable varieties in minute little plots within your square, interspersed with companion plants, self seeding herbs and marigolds - the insects will fly over and the weeds will find no space. Less time spent on shopping for vegetables provides time to tie up the beans and plug in a few seeds. Bend, reach, turn, stretch and take deep breaths of fresh air, so you don’t need to go to the gym. Move beyond one square and you won’t need to go jogging either. Food gardening is the most intelligent endeavour on earth and ought to be understood by anyone who eats. Page 12 - May 2013 - The Local News

Time wise, if you plan to spend 10-15 minutes per day in the veggie garden you will be able to provide the ongoing assistance your garden requires. Gardens do the work of collecting sunlight, air and moisture and you as the gardener just assist with this. If you miss a day, that’s fine just add a bit more time to your next foray. Bees are similar to gardens in that they are the ‘busy’ ones. Our GCG beehive is filled with activity and filling with honey! In the next GCG article we will let you know more about how bees can keep you in honey.
