RSPCA’s Big Adopt-Out on again If you’re looking to buy a pet, be sure to visit the Brisbane Showgrounds on Saturday September 20 from 9am to 3pm. RSPCA Queensland is hosting its second annual Big Adopt-Out! With over 150 dogs and puppies available to adopt from over 30 different animal welfare and rescue groups, there is sure to be a pet to suit your lifestyle. Last year’s Big Adopt-Out saw over 100 canines find their furever home. RSPCA Qld Rehoming and Rescue Coordinator Nicci Exposito said the Big Adopt-Out was a good example of what collaboration can do in saving animals’ lives. “RSPCA Qld works closely with many rescue groups Australia-wide. By coming together for the day, we not only saved the lives of animals adopted on the day but forged stronger links between all the groups,” said Nicci. If you are seeking a second furry companion, you can bring your own dog to the Big Adopt-Out so that your pet will be able to meet a potential new companion on the day to ensure a happy, furry Tori the Shih Tzu cross who was happily relationship. Please be mindful that there will be adopted at last years event. lots of dogs at the Big Adopt-Out, so please only bring your pooch if they are looking for a long-term relationship. Last year, Cynthia from Forest Lake attended the Big Adopt-Out. She was looking for a new friend for her Border Collie, Bandit. Stopping at the RSPCA stall, Cynthia spotted Tori the Shih Tzu cross. “She looked up at me and it was like my heart had been struck by a thunderbolt. I was smitten.” Cynthia then had time to introduce Bandit to Tori. They quickly warmed to each other and now the two are inseparable. Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis
encouragement |noun: the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope. When was the last time someone encourage you? It seems to be a bit of a dying art in our society. Encouragement is more than flattery or compliments. It is something that, as the definitions states, gives support, confidence and hope. If you’re anything like me, it can be difficult to take encouragement. Because, I think, encouraging words are mainly said at times when we are down and despondent, we can easily dismiss the encouraging words of others as mere platitudes intended to cheer us up or rally us out of a slump. Recently, I had some encouraging words said to me. I smiled, nodded, and said ‘thank you’ in the right places, all the while, I inwardly squirmed and disagreed with their words. You see, encouraging words always talk about what we are doing or have done right and it can be hard to square another’s perception of us with what we believe about ourselves. I was reminded of how I reacted to encouragement when I encouraged someone else just the other day. This person possesses a skill that I don’t, and they were freely sharing that gift with others in a beautiful way. When I commented on it, however, my words were brushed aside and almost disregarded. There is a fine line between humility and not accepting that we are blessing others. When we shun the encouragement of others, as I did on the inside and my friend did, we’re almost saying that what that person thinks is irrelevant or even wrong. We’re not allowing others the opportunity to encourage and support us, things which can inspire us to keep going or to continue using our talents and gifts for others. I’ve talked before about the importance of being good receivers as well as givers. And this is a case in point. We need to receive the words of others graciously, accept that something we did or said made a difference in another’s life and allow their words to lift us up. And when was the last time you encouraged someone? Have you told those special people in your life that you enjoy their piano/soccer/art/science skills? Or let your spouse know that you appreciate their input into your life? Have you smiled and said an encouraging word to that young mum in the shops with the screaming three year old? Or a harried teacher at the end of a long week? Have you told your kids’ sports coach that you value and support them volunteering their time for your kids and others? We all need encouragement and the opportunities to give it are endless, if we only look around us and notice others. And watch how you receive it, too. Being gracious will in turn encourage the encourager to give more encouragement! Who will you encourage today?

Tick season starts now
Tick season has begun with a vengeance this year and we have been seeing cases since July. At this time of year, when the temperature is warming up and spring is here, we all need to think about the dangers that ticks present to our pets. The paralysis tick is found along the eastern seaboard from north Queensland down through NSW and into northern Victoria. They are not always restricted to the coast line; in the right conditions and with the right habitat they can be found more inland, usually along waterways. The bandicoot is the natural host of the paralysis tick but they can also be found on animals that live in or near scrub, including some marsupials, birds and reptiles. The problem for pet owners is when the ticks attach to your pets. The tick sucks the blood from the animal and at the same time secretes its saliva that contains neurotoxins which are absorbed into your pet’s system and causes signs of tick paralysis. Our leafy suburbs mean that this is a high risk area for the paralysis tick and the symptoms to watch out for include: • loss of co-ordination or wobbly hind legs that progresses to front limbs, difficulty standing or walking • change in bark • coughing or dry retching • loss of appetite Remember it is really important to go over your pet every day searching for ticks. If your pet shows symptoms of tick paralysis or you find a tick keep your pet calm and comfortable. Do not give them food or water and talk to your vet. Your vet will kill and remove the tick and give your pet a tick anti-toxin and supportive treatment for respiratory complications. Your pet may need hospitalisation until fully recovered. Prevention really is better than cure and to protect your pet talk to your vet about the best preventative product for your pet’s circumstances. Options include a tick rinse, topical liquid on the back of the neck at the tick dose which is every two weeks, tick collars and sprays. Cat bite abscesses and infections We have had a number of cats coming in recently with nasty infections from cat scratches and bites. Several of the injuries had occurred a week before, and the owners thought that once the wounds closed over they were healed. However, that is never the case; without treatment, the infection grows in the tissue and causes an abscess and damage to the underlying tissue. Treatment usually includes antibiotics. The secret here is to get your cat checked out and antibiotics started immediately, that way you reduce the need for anaesthetic and surgery. Cats that get into fights are more at risk from contracting viral diseases such as Feline Infectious Viraemia FIV which causes other health risks.
Colourful past and a bright future ahead To celebrate the 85th year of Brigidine College, Indooroopilly, Principal, Mr Brendan Cahill commissioned stained glass windows to be created for the Chapel. “The artwork aims to honour and celebrate the Brigidine Sisters who established the College in 1929,” Mr Cahill reflected. “The project would not have been possible without the sponsorship of the College P&F Association.” Brigidine College has a proud history and tradition. Artist Gail Donovan was very cognisant of this when designing the images. “The windows use visual symbols to incorporate the Brigidine Core Values,” she said. “The large golden spiral symbolizes the spiritual energy and generosity of God and of St Brigid, Brigidine College’s patron saint. “The 5th century Celtic St Brigid was reputedly a woman of extraordinary faith, love and compassion. Artist Gail Donovan with Principal, Mr Brendan Cahill These are the qualities alive in the school community and Brigidine Sister, Sr Maree Marsh csb in the College Chapel. since 1929.” “The lamp of learning with its flame is also a central symbol for our College,” Mr Cahill said. “Because today, as in the past, education ignites a sense of purpose and hope for young women.” The vibrant colours express a sense of celebration and welcome. This richness is a far cry from the hardships that the nuns encountered in the early years. “We are in awe of the founding principal, Mother Foley and the four other sisters who provided so much with so little. Whilst the local community around Indooroopilly was as generous as it could be, there are many stories of deprivation and uncertainty.” Currently, the College is experiencing wonderful growth and the next fifteen years heading towards the centenary celebrations are looking bright.

Graceville State School and Building Opening I was pleased to attend the Graceville State School fete and open their new multistorey classroom block. The fete is the school’s biggest fund-raising event and generates incredible benefits to Graceville students for years to come. Proceeds from the school’s fetes have been used to air condition the new multi-storey classroom block, and install electronic whiteboards and computer labs. Funds from this year’s event will go towards the new adventure playground. Thanks to the parents and local community who are enthusiastic supporters of the Graceville State School. Unveiling of Tarin Kowt Memorial A large crowd gathered at Corinda for the unveiling and dedication of the memorial for those who served and died whilst based at Tarin Kowt. The Sherwood/Indooroopilly RSL sub branch commissioned the plaque as a memorial for the 114 coalition soldiers killed in Uruzgan Province including 40 Australians. The memorial will serve as a reminder of the contribution and sacrifices of the soldiers who have served in Afghanistan. Taylor Bridge Junior Rugby Union The Taylor Bridge Junior Rugby Union Club recently held their annual dinner dance fundraiser which I attended. The club is focused on making rugby a fun, participant sport for boys and girls with teams from under six to under 17. They also have a Bull Sharks Pups training squad for keen three to five year olds. Congratulations to all the players and their supportive families for their successful 2014 season. Kids Get Started again with sport funding The fourth round of the hugely popular Get Started funding program has opened. I strongly encourage local sport and recreation clubs, and families to take advantage of this wonderful program and check if they are eligible to take part in this successful initiative which helps to lower the cost of living for local families. Get Started provides vouchers valued up to $150 to help kids whose families can least afford for them to join a sport or recreation club. Get Started was designed to encourage more young people to get into sport or recreation, and to ease the financial burden on families. 106 vouchers have been issued in this electorate since the program commenced. For more information on how to apply for a Get Started voucher, visit the website at: www.nprsr.qld.gov.au.

PROBUS CLUBupdate by Coral Rieichman
MEMBERSHIP & PUBLICITY OFFICER
The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. At our last meeting our speaker was Natasha Scott an audiologist from Australian Hearing in Sherwood who shared with us all we need to know about protecting our hearing, having a hearing test and how to get the maximum benefit from a hearing aid. We were all ears and found Natasha’s talk most informative. This month we had a tour of the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, the largest stand alone planetarium in Australia. Many of us had never visited the Planetarium before and found it quite exciting to be transported through the Cosmic Skydome through our galaxy the milky way and out into outer space. We heard about cosmic collisions and the energy released which drives the growth and evolution of the universe and the question was asked “Are we truly alone in space?”. The tour was followed with a convivial lunch at the Mt Coot-tha Gardens café overlooking the pond. Our next outing is a Rivercity Cruise with commentary from Southbank to Newstead House and then onto the Brekky Creek Hotel for lunch. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. For further information please ring Coral on 3379 7540.

Oxley Men’s Shed update
by Jim Pascoe
What a fantastic and fruitful time we have had in the shed over the last few months. We received one hundred old railway sleepers and they were put to good use around the grounds, especially in the garden area. Some have been used to create wheelchair friendly access to the garden and also creating a slip rail fence and garden bed edging. These gardens are open to everyone in the community and are wheelchair friendly. There is a good crop of vegetables already planted and other beds are being prepared. There has already been one crop of peas picked and distributed around. In July, our garden area was officially opened and blessed by Bishop Alison Taylor, Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Brisbane who also planted a Lisbon lemon tree to mark the occasion. It was a day of celebration not only for shed members but for members of the community who came along and partook of a morning tea and sausage sizzle. There was a plant stall together with hand made toys for sale. The necessary requirements needed to comply with the building completion, namely the soundproof fence and designated bitumen carpark including handicapped sites have been finalised and work can now proceed inside the shed. Santa’s little helpers have to work somewhere don’t they. The shed has just constructed and installed timber garden beds for the Chelmer Station kindergarten and is also doing some repair work to some musical instruments for the Oxley State Primary School. The shed held it’s third Annual General Meeting in early August where all positions were filled. John Brown said that it was very pleasing to see the enthusiasm generated by members in all activities of the shed since it’s inception. The recipients of the perpetual awards this year were Eddie Smit and Wally Gisler (pictured). Our shed is open to all men in the area and meet every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 9.00am at 18 California Rd, Oxley. A warm hand of friendship as well as a cup of tea or coffee is extended to all. There is even a “rest for the weary” spot complete with tables and chairs under the Camphor Laurel tree where you can while away the time with a cuppa.

Friends of Sherwood arboretum by Andrew Benison
- Brisbane’s living treasure -
If you were looking for an ideal spot to enjoy a spring sunset, it would be hard to go past the John Herbert Memorial Vista. Thanks to Council’s unanimous decision last February, the John Herbert Memorial Vista at Dewar Terrace today is a prominent feature of the heritage-listed Sherwood Arboretum. It’s also a very special place for Mrs Yvonne Herbert and Mrs Alison Arvier, who fondly remember their late husbands’ long friendship, which started at The University of Queensland in the 1940s after returning home from war service. With views west over a sea of trees, the Vista was the result of a determined effort by volunteers of the then Lions Club of Brisbane - Sherwood and the bond of friendship between John Herbert and Sherwood Botanist, Maurie Arvier. The Lions Vista project, between 1979 and 1984, which was nominated for a Lions International award, was a community response to the tireless community work of John Herbert, who served as the State Member for Sherwood for 22 years, until a few weeks before his death in 1978. Mr Herbert, a former State Cabinet Minister, was also a well-respected member of the National Trust of Queensland and served as Trust President between 1971 and 1974. Mr Arvier put his Botany skills to great use to guide the Lions volunteers in transforming this forgotten patch of elevated land into a showpiece of Australian native trees overlooking the Arboretum. Maurie is fondly remembered by the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA) for identifying and placing name tags on many of the Arboretum’s collection of more than 1000 specimen trees. Both FOSA and Council have continued work to improve the Vista, particularly in transforming the creek-line, running along the northern edge, into a flourishing wildlife corridor in the late 1980s. As a result, those Vista sunsets can now include the bonus of Eastern Whipbird calls during spring and summer. Please call Pauline at 3372 2577 if you would like to know more about the Brisbane Oxley - Sherwood Lions Club. To become involved with FOSA, call 3278 6525 or send an email to ilovesherwoodaboretum@gmail.com.
SHERWOOD / INDOOROOPILLY RSL Sub-Branch Update by Kevin Alcock
Tarin Kowt Memorial dedicated at Corinda in a moving ceremony On Saturday 16 August, in a moving service, Major-General John Cantwell AO, DSC (Rtd) unveiled the bronze rendition of the original memorial wall that was demolished when the Australian troops pulled out of their Tarin Kowt base in Afghanistan. Soldiers of the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment provided an Honour Guard and the Catafalque Party for the ceremony held at the Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL Sub-branch in Corinda. The haunting strains of the trumpet solo ‘Il Silenzio” (The Silence) set the scene and tone of what was to be a most moving and emotional service. The memorial listed the names of 24 Dutch, 49 American, one French and 41 Australian troops who died in Afghanistan, including that of the latest Australian to die. Family members of 11 of those soldiers attended, as well as representatives from all other units, sub-branch members, schools and the general public. Also in attendance were the Honorary Dutch Consul Dr Kasper Kuipers, representatives from the American Legion, the French Foreign Legion, the Commander of the 7th Brigade, Brigadier Greg Bilton AM,CSC,ADC., and RSL State President Mr Terry Meehan. General Cantwell gave his speech whilst standing in front of the soldiers, in the rain, and in so doing, earned the respect and admiration of all. A wreath laying and floral tributes ceremony was included in the service. The attendance of children representing all the local schools was appreciated by all, in particular those from Sherwood State School where Corporal Matthew Hopkins, one of the soldiers listed on the memorial, attended as a student. The service received television coverage from Channel 7 and the Sub-branch intends to have all the footage recorded by an Army PR crew edited for a presentation DVD to be made available to the families of the fallen. At the conclusion of the ceremony, those attending enjoyed the hospitality of the Sub-branch for a light lunch.

What’s happening at the Benarrawa Community Centre? Benarrawa Community Development Association has welcomed back the Southside Nature Babes Playgroup to its list of regular activities. The organisation held a morning tea in late July to gauge community interest in getting this outdoor, nature-focused playgroup up and running once again. The morning tea saw a positive response from the community, and the Southside Nature Babes has since reconvened. The group now gathers every Wednesday from 9.30am to 11.30am at Benarrawa, and in the adjacent Graceville Community Garden. The Playgroup includes unstructured outdoor play, as well as some organised activities which aim to encourage children to explore creative ways of incorporating nature into their play. The group warmly welcomes new parents and their children (primarily aged 0-5 years). In other news, in conjunction with Graceville Community Garden, Benarrawa will host a Samoan-style Hangi, or ‘Umu’, on Saturday 20 September. A Samoan Umu is a traditional method of cooking which sees food placed on a fire pit over heated stones and roasted from the heat underneath. Food preparation and cooking will begin at 8.30am, followed by lunch at noon. Community members are invited to come along from 8.30am to help with preparation. Singing voices, guitars and other musical instruments are also most welcome. Gold coin donations will be gratefully accepted. Other upcoming events on Benarrawa’s radar include a ‘Mental Health Awareness Week’ Community Lunch, to be held at Benarrawa on Tuesday 7 October, and the annual Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander’s Elders lunch, to be held at Christ the King Primary School on Saturday 11 October. Regular groups and activities include a community lunch on the first Tuesday of every month from noon - 2pm and Southwest Network of Carers gathering on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 10am - noon. Please contact Benarrawa CDA for more information on these and other events and activities. Phone Jenna on 3379 9925 or email benarrawacd1@westnet.com.au. Benarrawa CDA is located at 79 Waratah Avenue.
Sherwood Probus Club Update
by Pam Dale
Our August meeting had the most interesting speaker; James (Jim) Lergessner is a prolific author who lives on Bribie Island. Several of his fascinating books are about the history of Bribie and the inhabitants. He enthralled our members with stories of Snippets from a Baby Boomer’s Diary and Queen of the Dance Halls: Cloudland Ballroom in Brisbane 1939-82. His talk was interwoven with anecdotes from these books and reminded us of earlier times with the mention of so many objects and people from our childhood, teens and early twenties. All done with a wonderful sense of humour. Members are looking forward to our September speaker, Dr Jonathan Miller whose subject is the Variety Bash. This general practitioner travels with and provides medical services to the participants. Early in September, members will be joined by Kenmore Village Club on a long day trip to the Margaret Olley Exhibition at the Tweed River Art Gallery at Murwillumbah, followed by lunch at the Gallery Café. Also in early September, the Garden Group will be going by train and ferry to New Farm Park to have morning tea at ‘The End of the Road Coffee Shop’ and looking at the rose gardens, followed by a picnic lunch. The lunch group continues to meet each month at a local venue to enjoy good food, and pleasant conversation. The dinner group will meet in late September at a local restaurant. September’s selection for the book group is “The Pact” by Jodi Picoult. Late in September, some members will be going on an extended tour to Goulburn and surrounding areas together with Mt Gravatt Probus Club. Mah Jong and Scrabble groups are enjoying much fun and laughter. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club. At the meeting the Club reflected on its many achievements during 2013-14 including raising $12,000 for Sailability Graceville to purchase two boats to take disabled people sailing on Tuesdays each week. Looking forward, the rest of this year promises to be busy for the Club, starting with a BBQ at Montrose Access’s ‘Walk with Me’ event on 31 August, which celebrated the achievements of people with disabilities. The Club’s Effective Services Director, John Newton (pictured on the right with the District Governor), said, “This annual event is always a fun way to raise both awareness and funds for a wonderful cause and is one that the Club is very happy to support each year.” The Brisbane Taylor Bridge Rotary club was formed a little over two years ago. It meets weekly for one hour to discuss its activities and service projects, listen to interesting guest speakers and to have some fun at the same time. The Club is looking for new ways it can help the local community and for new members. Contact Dee on 3379 2002 for more information.

Graceville Community Gardens has recently been awarded a Brisbane’s Spotless Suburbs Award 2014 for Community Action and Partnerships. This award acknowledges that the GCG has, as part of its work within the community, involved many others within their activities; these have included Iranian refugees, people from the Pacific Region and local schools and other clubs. In a ceremony at King George Square, our Brisbane Lord Mayor, the Honourable Graham Quirk, presented this award as part of an event in which many other Brisbane groups also received acknowledgement. Belonging to a group is more than involvement in the purpose of that group. There is also a reach beyond its purpose and this award acknowledges that the activity of gardening happens within a community and as such is about more than growing plants as it is also about growing community. Spring Seasonal Tasks Fertilise bulbs, pawpaws, citrus and roses and water well. Protect seedlings from snails and slugs with non-toxic, iron based baits. Prune hibiscus now and azaleas, poinsettias and snowflake bush after flowering. Re-pot and fertilise indoor plants. Control azalea lace bug, aphids, scale, leaf miner and bronze orange bugs. What vegetables to plant now - beetroot, capsicum, kohl rabi, okra, pumpkin, rockmelon, rosella, silver beet, sweet corn, sweet potato, watermelon and zucchini. Southside Nature Babes, a children’s garden playgroup, meets at the garden on a weekday morning from 9 to 11am. For more information, contact Jenna at Benarrawa on 3379 9925. Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, at the corner of Waratah Ave & Cordalba St, Graceville. Look for the ‘Community Garden’ sign on the corner of Oxley Road and Acacia Avenue to assist with directions. Everyone is invited to be part of the regular working bee followed by morning tea from 7am to 10am each Sunday. All are welcome.
