Oxley Community Carols It’s hard to believe its Christmas time already.

To really celebrate the wonder of Christmas time for kids and families, this year’s special guests are renowned husband and wife, music and puppet team, Tim and Michelle Gray with their special show It’s Christmas Time.

Winners of Best Australia Gospel Song Award 2006 for their song He’s Good, Tim and Michelle and their own two kids bring a family friendly show which you’re bound to enjoy.

Now in its 18th year, the Annual Carols event, presented by Oxley–Darra Uniting Church is a night of fun and music for all ages with a baby animal farm, glow sticks, a jumping castle and free activities for the children.

There’s also a sausage sizzle and drinks available from 5.30pm with the carols starting at 6.30pm as the sun goes down.

In a world filled with too many wars and conflict, it’s time for a change of heart this Christmas.

Students and staff of Brigidine College, Indooroopilly, made a human peace sign on the oval to physically demonstrate their commitment to change, with a drone camera capturing the amazing visual.

How we treat each other and the earth are tightly interwoven into the fabric of the Brigidine charism. With this in mind, each student created a coloured heart to hold high with the theme for peace day by Morgan Evers, Year 9, being, “It doesn’t matter if you are black or white, it only matters if you have a multi-coloured heart.”

“We hear about conflict and violence every day,” Mr Andrew Beiers, Deputy Principal Mission said. “There is a groundswell among young people to create awareness to bring change to our world; to bring peace.

“The International Day of Prayer for Peace celebrations held recently focuses the attention of being the change we want to see in the world. Brigidine students are keen to become peacemakers this Christmas in the hope of bringing peace in the world.”

Brigidine’s peace celebrations also included events such as a liturgy, international fashion parade and a multicultural concert. Students dressed in clothes displaying their cultural origin in solidarity with the women of the world.

“As 70% of the two billion poor in the world are women, our commitment to the option for the poor is a key to Catholic social teaching. It’s vital that our young Brigidine women are conscious of this fact and initiate action for peace,” Mr Beiers concluded. “We hope that peace can underpin this Christmas season.”

If you are a regular reader of this column, you would know by now that I love Christmas. I love the rush, the entertaining, the present wrapping, the buzz in the air. I love it all.

My husband, though, being not so keen on the rush and busyness of the season, was lamenting it’s excess and the fact that most of the time, the reason for the season is not even mentioned.

It’s true, isn’t it? Christmas in the western world is often a time of excess. We spend too much, eat too much, drink too much, and the whole point of Christmas gets lost along the way, if it’s even remembered at all. It can be hard to see how any of what we currently do at Christmas time has any relationship to what happened in that manger over 2000 years ago.

So, how do we get around that if we want to remember the real reason we celebrate it but not boycott the whole event?

I’m not sure what the answer is for each individual but here’s how I look at it.

When we rush around looking for that perfect gift for a loved one, we are honouring the gift humanity was given on the first Christmas. When we worry if there is enough food or that the meat is overcooked, we are demonstrating we care about the people we are feeding and want to give them the best there is. When we make up another bed on the lounge room floor, we are opening our home and showing love to others - something that the person who was born at Christmas talked a bit about. When we don’t sit down all day because we are on our feet ensuring everyone has enough drinks and food, we are serving others - another thing that the same person talked a bit about. When we go on a mad cleaning frenzy in preparation for our guests, we are really saying that their comfort and giving them pleasant surrounds is important to us.

We can find the real meaning of Christmas in everything we do if we look at it a different way.

For those who feel bothered by the over-commercialism, the tinsel, the secular emphasis on a fat man in a red suit, try shifting your focus and instead of grumbling and lamenting the lack of acknowledgement of the real reason for the season, embrace the festivities.

What better way to say thank you for the ultimate gift we were given than loving, serving, laughing and thoroughly enjoying ourselves?

So, from us to you, a merry Christmas. May it be safe, full of joy and abounding in fellowship, no matter how you spend it.

Friends of Sherwood arboretum

Mother Nature has a spectacular way of reminding us that Christmas is just around the corner. On the doorstep of each summer, the Illawarra Flame Trees (Brachychiton acerifolius) shed their leaves and explode on the scene like a daytime fireworks display. This is certainly true in the heritage-listed Sherwood Arboretum where our flame trees produce masses of bright coral-red flowers.

It’s no surprise that a tree that becomes a brilliant tangle of bell-shaped flowers was the obvious choice for the elevated slopes of the Sherwood Arboretum, known as the John Herbert Memorial Vista.

In 1982, agronomist Maurie Arvier guided the local Lions Club volunteers in planting the Vista with some of the most spectacular Australian native trees, including the Flame Tree, which grow in rainforest from central New South Wales to the tropical north. Maurie, responsible for placing many of the The Flame Tree’s bell-shaped flowers.

Arboretum’s original name tags on the specimen trees, made an excellent choice with this tree.

In a “good year”, and this has certainly been one, the generally deciduous Flame Tree will shed all of its maple-like leaves and replace them with waxy crimson-coloured bells during November. It is little wonder that this most dazzling of Australian native trees is now cultivated world-wide for its beauty. Without the competition for light, most Flame Trees normally reach about eight to 15 m in height. The pod-like seeds that follow the flowering are best handled with garden gloves, as they contain masses of irritating thin bristles that can stick in your skin. Preferring a well-drained soil with protection from wind and frost, the tree grows best in sunny spots.

On the subject of sun, you can certainly beat our summer heat with a relaxing bird walk at 6am on Sunday December 22 with noted Australian ecologist Professor Hugh Possingham.

Help Red Cross stock up for Christmas

As the festive season fast approaches, Red Cross is appealing for urgent donations of unwanted summer clothing to help stock local Red Cross Shops for Christmas.

National Marketing Manager, Jayne-Anne Power says ladies summer clothing is in hot demand, particularly dresses but anything light and in good condition is always appreciated.

“The early summer weather in many parts of the country has depleted our stores of summer clothing,” said Jayne-Anne.

“Christmas is the busiest time of the year for our Red Cross Shops, so we need more stock in the next few weeks to cater for the many hundreds of people who’ll be coming into our stores during December to buy something special for Christmas and help a great cause at the same time.”

The proceeds from shop sales help support people during disasters, provide daily phone calls to check on the wellbeing of isolated or elderly Australians, and prepare nutritious breakfasts for children who need a healthy start to the day.

To donate summer clothing simply walk into a Red Cross Shop and hand your items across the counter or place them in the donation box at the entrance to each store.

Corinda SS takes home gold and silver

Corinda State School’s Instrumental Music Program achieved outstanding results recently at the Brisbane band festival at Centenary State High School.

The Concert Band and the Senior Strings Ensemble both received Gold awards. The Beginner Band received a silver award.

Instrumental Music teachers Harmony Woollett and Karen Newham were very proud of their students who have worked extremely hard this year.

Corinda State School’s Instrumental Music Program is very unique with all Year 5 students learning an instrument at the start of the year.

Over 140 students participate in the school’s instrumental music program and many of these continue their musical careers through high school and into adult life.

Sherwood Probus Club Update Retirement – everybody’s doing it – but Probus does it better.

As we near the Christmas and New Year festive season, our members are looking forward to our club’s celebrations.

Christmas lunch is held in early December at our meeting venue where the chef prepares a lovely meal. A Dixieland Jazz Band will play both before and after lunch. Many lucky door prizes consisting of hampers which contain donations from members are distributed on the day. We celebrate the new year with our very popular New Year Breakfast held at a local park.

The book group continues to meet at a member’s home each month. At their Christmas meeting in late November they discussed the books that members are currently reading. They had four guests who are literacy tutors, giving a talk about their work. January’s selection is The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty.

In early November, club members joined the garden group for a coach trip to the privately owned Maleny Botanic Gardens which covers eight acres with spectacular views of the Glasshouse Mountains. This labour of love was an inspiration to all gardeners. From sloping farmland, he created many pools and dams while preserving most of the existing trees, complemented by numerous lakes and waterfalls providing countless options for photography. We enjoyed a delicious Devonshire morning tea before exploring these exquisite gardens.

Early December, we enjoyed a self catered Christmas lunch at a member’s home before exploring their garden which has been looked after well despite the drought conditions.

The scrabble and mah jong groups enjoy a regular get-together at our meeting venue.

Lunch and dinner groups will continue with their monthly outings in January. Full details of our activities appear in our monthly newsletter which is posted to every member in the week following our meetings.

Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area.

SHERWOOD / INDOOROOPILLY RSL Sub-Branch Update

This will be my last article for the year as it is now the December issue of The Local News. 2013 has seemed to pass by so quickly. It certainly is true that when you are very young, time seems to pass slowly but the older you get the quicker it gets. This year has seen quite a few improvements at the Sub-branch. Our outdoor area has been upgraded with a new BBQ area and we have even more improvements to make next year. This allows us to better cater for out social events for our members.

On Saturday the 9th of November I attended the welcome for the Mates4Mates paddlers who had paddled in kayaks from the Opera House in Sydney to Riverside in the Brisbane CBD. These paddlers include soldiers who had been wounded in Afghanistan. It was a tremendous effort that included a bit of sunburn and more than a fair share of blisters for the participants. The Spirit of Mateship, a Volvo 60 Round the World sailing boat bought by the RSL for the Mates4Mates, also put in an appearance. This boat will be competing in the Sydney to Hobart race this year with a crew made up of wounded diggers under the tutelage of Kerry Spencer, a very experienced Skipper who just happens to be an old mate of mine.

The Mates4Mates organisation is owned by the RSL and they have funded and set it all up. The Family Recovery Centre is based at Albion next to the Breakfast Creek Hotel and provides physical training facilities and also has a full time psychologist and other professionals on hand to assist the veterans and their families in the recovery process.

It is inspirational to see the dedication that the staff of Mates4Mates show in their efforts to help the veterans and their families.

In conclusion, I wish all the readers and Susannah and her staff a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Christmas at Sherwood Market The next market in the Sherwood Uniting Church grounds, cnr. Sherwood Road and Thallon Street, Sherwood, will be held on 7th December, 9.00 am to noon, with an emphasis on Christmas.

This is an opportunity to buy the little extra Christmas presents. There will also be the popular Thai cooking demonstration with opportunity to taste or buy. Live music will be the background to a variety of stalls which include cakes, craft of various kinds, paintings and cards.

This is an opportunity to meet with friends and enjoy morning tea in the courtyard which overlooks the children’s playground. Come and relax over a cuppa with pikelets, jam and cream.

New stall holders have already booked and other stall holders are welcome but insurance is essential. Cost of stall space is $5.

The storms of the past weeks have brought welcome rain to the gardens. Fortunately for the gardeners, that is all they have delivered, with Graceville escaping the destructive hail that has shredded the gardens of the less lucky.

The difference a drop of rain can make to the dedicated gardener as opposed to watering needs no explanation to the faithful.

Everything just smells clean. The air has crispness to it that you can’t explain, and the soil feels heavy and fertile – not to mention the sweet odour of wet, rotting mulch.

The rain shouts ‘renew’ and the gardeners have been doing just that. Over the last two weeks we have been busy planting with okra, honeydew melons, eggplants and zucchini settling into their new patch.

I popped around to have an encouraging chat to the zucchini earlier in the week. They need the attention; I’d planted them out in a bit of a hurry and draped them with nylon netting in a bid to thwart the ever vigilant scrub turkeys. There they were, standing tall and proud like little green soldiers on parade. They stood arms up, saluting the sun and enjoying the cooler, damp conditions.

Of course, it isn’t just the cultivated plants that thrive with the rain. Did I mention the supersizing weeds and grass that have set to with unbelievable energy to take over the world? The steady chip, chip, around the garden is keeping them in control for the moment. There are good weeds and bad, and we are happy to share but if we all keep to the designated areas, everyone will be happy.

Oh yes, for those of you who were wondering, the battle continues to rage with the redoubtable turkeys. The beans have emerged as clear winners with the gardeners enjoying a great crop, which they have selfishly kept for themselves.

Alas the strongly established rosella canes have felt the wrath of these birds – someone had to pay and unfortunately the thai basil and rosellas have taken the brunt of their foraging. Not even the rain will save some of them.

The Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, on the corner of Waratah Ave and Cordalba St, Graceville. Everyone is invited to be part of our regular Sunday working bee and morning tea from 7am to 10am.

Oxley Men’s Shed Update

The Oxley Men’s Shed has had a very busy and enjoyable month. Our President, John Brown and Secretary Robert Irwin attended the Australian Men’s Shed Association of Australia’s Annual Conference that was held in Ballarat in late October. They came back with a lot of new ideas and information for other shed members. There are now over one thousand Men’s Sheds in Australia.

Last month, we were fortunate to receive a grant from the Gaming Benefits Fund.

This grant will be used for the purchase of tools for the shed as well as hopefully paying for the soundproof that we have to construct on the western side of the shed as part of the building requirements.

Local MP Tarnya Smith visited the shed this week and presented a mounted Gaming Benefits Fund Grant Certificate to Shed President John Brown.

Another project that is nearing completion is the Community Garden that is being constructed behind the church building. There is even a garden bed being completed that is being constructed for wheelchair access. After all the rain that we have had, members are anxious to see if our tank has filled up yet.

We now number over forty multiracial members who have come to us from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Great Britain, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and Yugoslavia and who also have a wide variety of skills, trades and tertiary qualifications.

Our Melbourne Cup day was a great success with a very overweight jockey and suspicious bookmaker organising the sweep. Thanks must go to David and Patrick for this event. Our trip to the Scenic Rim Robotic Dairy at Tamrookum was a very enjoyable and interesting day. The cows didn’t perform like this when I was milking. Our shed had a display at St Matthews Anglican Church during the recent Sherwood Street Festival with a powerpoint presentation of various shed activities.

Members have been attending our Monday work days and participate in a number of activities some being bicycle repairs, garden bed making, welding, setting up the workshop, cleaning up the pathways, tree trimming and organising the storeroom.

Oxley Men’s Shed extend a welcome hand to any male who would like to join us on a Monday or Tuesday. Our Mondays have been classified as work days and our Tuesday meeting are used for our formal monthly meeting, guest speakers and just having a yarn over a cup of tea or coffee. Premier’s Reading Challenge Congratulations to the enthusiastic students from four of our local schools who took part in celebrations after reading their way through the eighth annual Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Graceville State School, Fig Tree Pocket State School, Christ the King Primary School and St Peters College have done a fantastic job encouraging a love of reading in students from Prep to Year 7. Their efforts help set Queensland children up for a lifetime of learning by encouraging children to read a range of different books, helping to exercise young imaginations and open up a world of facts and figures.

Get Playing Grants The next round of the Get Playing grants closes on 28 February 2014. Get Playing is one of three funding programs that comprise the government’s Get in the Game initiative to support sport and recreation. Get Playing aims to assist local sport and recreation organisation with facility development so more Queenslanders are encouraged to become involved in the sport and recreation activity of their choice. Queensland ANZAC Centenary Campaign To celebrate the centenary of the First World War, the Queensland Government is funding a series of milestone commemorative events such as ANZAC Day 2015 and a community grants program for local projects and events across the state. This is one of the most important anniversaries of modern history, marking the period of the Great War, which claimed tens of millions of lives and left a huge emotional scar across the globe.

The state government will provide $49.3 million in funding for significant legacy projects such as the restoration and refurbishment of ANZAC Square and many commemoration events and re-enactments around the state over the four years of the celebrations.

Proposals from community groups who want to get involved in commemorative projects and activities to honour the Anzac spirit in their local community are being sought. Information about legacy projects, major commemorative events and the grants program is available on the ANZAC Centenary website at: www.qld.gov.au/Anzac100.

Chelmer and District Probus Club Update The newly re-established Probus Club of Chelmer and District draws its members mainly from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members.

On our last outing, a group of members caught the Citycat from Toowong to New Farm Park where they admired the many beautiful roses flowering in the rose garden and some regaled us with stories of their successes or failures growing roses in Brisbane. We then walked to the Merthyr Bowls Club for lunch where we enjoyed much laughter and chatting and the magnificent views of the Brisbane Members at the Newfarm Park outing in November.

At our November meeting, we were all fascinated to hear about the recent trip taken by two of our members, a husband and wife to the Northern Territory, staying at Lorella Springs, a million acre outback cattle station and 4WD wilderness park. Based in their camper trailer for seven weeks, they combined volunteering in hospitality, general maintenance and gardening with a relaxing holiday and met many interesting people. Many members said how interesting it was to hear about other members travels as it opened up new ideas for their own travel plans.

The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees.

Christmas message for pets A very merry Christmas to you, your family and your pets. At this time of year it is always good to make a note of some rules on feeding. During this holiday season there are a few things to remember that will help you and your pet get through the holiday season fit and healthy.

Leftovers: Your Christmas leftovers should not be shared with your pet. Any leftovers are calories that are not counted and can lead to them putting on weight. Often at this time of year I have clients who have leftovers that have been out on the table all day. They contain bacteria that can cause GI tract disease in your pet. The symptoms include gut pain, vomiting and/or diarrhoea. Throw them out. Your pet has a digestive system similar to ours and as a mammal, we need to eat fresh food. Sometimes leftovers go into the fridge following Christmas dinner and stay there for a while, as we are never short of food around Christmas time. The rule for leftovers is that if they are old or not fresh and you would not eat them, do not feed them to your pet; they will become ill.

Fatty ham and other food: If you are cutting the fat off the ham or skin off the turkey or chicken, please do not give it to your pet. Too much fat can cause pancreatitis and other metabolic disease. Pancreatitis is always considered in every animal that presents with vomiting, diarrhoea, anorexia, dehydration and or abdominal pain. Canine pancreatitis is a potentially fatal disease and can be difficult to diagnose as presenting signs are common and non-specific. Your vet may need to take some blood to confirm a diagnosis of pancreatitis and then start specific therapy which may include fluids, antibiotics, anti vomiting medication, and pain relief. Dogs as well as cats can suffer from this disease.

Cooked bones: While barbeques are fun during the festive season, it is important to remember that your pets should not be fed any cooked bones. Cooking changes the structure of the bones and makes them brittle and more likely to splinter, which can cause serious health problems, gut irritation, trauma to the gut lining and obstruction and constipation.

Exercise in the cool: Nothing is better than a good walk following a holiday meal, but remember during these summer months to walk your pet in the cooler times of the day, early morning or late evening. That way they can rest during the hotter parts of the day. Heat stroke can be a consequence of too much exercise on a hot day. Remember to take water out with you for your dog and rest them if they are too hot. If they do get over heated, cool them down will a cold bath and call your vet for advice.

No chocolate: This is what I say every Christmas, because we forget that chocolate can poison your dog.

The theo bromide is toxic to dogs. It can affect the gastrointestinal system, central nervous system and cardiovascular system. The signs to watch out for include vomiting, thirst, diarrhoea, incontinence, agitation and seizures.

A merry Christmas and happy New Year to you and your pets. The years are going faster and in the holidays it is nice to spend time with family and pets. Don’t forget a little doggy treat or feline fancy under the tree for our pets.
