Starlets may star in the 2028 Olympics The year 2028 for many young 12-year-old girls may sound a long way off but some girls looking to the future and setting their goals for this Olympic year could well mean they will be representing Australia at an Olympic Games wherever they might be held. Recently at Kawana, St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School held an exhilarating end-ofseason Junior rowing regatta dedicated to help find Queensland’s next young rowing stars. Races in sculling boats, quads and even eights, saw a program full of variety with the young Year 7’s performing above expectation and appropriately called ‘The Starlets’. St Aidan’s Junior School is one of the only girls’ school in Brisbane offering rowing to Year 7 students. Year 7 co-ordinator, Ms Sally Mills, said that it was the largest group of Year 7’s that has been produced by the rowing program which will hopefully transform one day to become the next crop of Queensland high performance rowing athletes. Head Junior coach, Mr Ian Cook, reverently known as ‘Cookie’, said it was one of the best days he had ever spent with the program. “Everybody laughed and enjoyed seeing these young rowers having a good time, however conditions were atrocious with a cross cold south westerly wind blowing strongly across the course. I am not sure what the temperature was but it felt sub-zero which only showed that if St Aidans rowers decide to accomplish what they set out to do, it will happen. “But what did amaze me was the way these ‘starlets’ handled the rough conditions. “Not one of these young 12-year-olds fell out of their boats, showing our team of coaches have certainly done their job in starting these young girls off on their rowing careers,” Mr Cook said. Director of Rowing, Mr Cam Stephenson, said the Junior Rowing instruction at St Aidan’s offered a dynamic schedule of rowing education from the teaching of basic skills progressing to rowing technique refinement through to Year 12.
