Benarrawa Community Development Association will host a morning tea at its Graceville premises from 10am to noon on Thursday 15th May, as part of national Domestic and Family Violence Prevention month. The morning tea is intended to raise awareness of the issue as well as provide community members with information on simple steps they can take to help prevent domestic and family violence. The organisation believes increasing community connectedness is a key factor in preventing domestic and family violence in the community. This will be one of the principal messages relayed at the event. Lulu Milne, Principal Social Worker at the Women’s Legal Service QLD, will attend the event as a guest speaker. The Women’s Legal Service is a specialist community legal centre providing free legal and social work services to Queensland women. Ms Milne will discuss legal options for women but, more importantly, she will speak about practical safety tips for those experiencing violence as well as ideas for what we can do as a community to reduce violence. Women, men and children of all ages are welcome to attend. However, space is limited, so please contact Benarrawa Community Development Association, 79 Waratah Avenue, Graceville on 3379 9925 by Monday 12 May to register your interest. An optional $5 donation is suggested, with all proceeds raised to be donated to the Women’s Legal Service. Benarrawa would like to express its gratitude for the support and generosity of their local corporate sponsor for this event, Miette’s Boulangerie Pattiserie, who is donating bakery products for the morning tea. Benarrawa will also host a Sorry Day Ceremony on 26 May at the ‘Journey Home’ Plaque, by the river, Sherwood Arboretum (Joseph St entrance) at 7am. The short ceremony will be followed by a shared breakfast in the park. Please bring along light breakfast fare to share, however, tea and coffee will be provided. For more information please call John or Jenna at Benarrawa Community Development Association phone 3379 9925 or email benarrawa@westnet.com.au.

Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

With it being Mother’s Day this weekend, it’s a good time to reflect on mothering and the role of mothers in our society and communities. Sadly, for many the relationship with their mother is not an easy or pleasant one. I’ve been fortunate to have had a steady, loving, supportive relationship with mine, and because of this, my heart breaks for those who don’t. I was chatting about mothers with some friends the other day, and out of the conversation came a recognition for the need for mothering types of relationships, for all of us but more so if our relationship with our mother is not the best. In the street I spent my teenage years, I had a few mothers. They were women who offered a different perspective than my own mother, and who were a little removed emotionally from me. Because they weren’t as emotionally invested in me as my own mother, they could perhaps see things from another angle and give unique insight. I will always be thankful for those who took an interest in me as a growing young woman and for the time they spent listening to me and my teenage angst, most of which was unwarranted, mind you! During the conversation with my friends, I said the words “we need to embrace universal motherhood”. We all chuckled at the slightly ‘hippy’ turn of phrase but it’s true, we need to be ‘mothering’ one another. Let’s get a definition of what it means to ‘mother’ someone. According to my trusty dictionary it means to look after, care for, take care of, nurse, protect, tend, raise, rear, pamper, coddle, cosset, fuss over. So, really, mothering shouldn’t just be left to mothers, or even women. Mothering should be what we all do for everyone. As adults, we don’t need ‘mothering’ all the time but there are times we need to be looked after, taken care of, or fussed over. In our friendships, we need to be looking for opportunities to show care and nurture our friends. Mothering others means we give them attention, we listen, we take note of when they need some extra care and pampering. It was interesting to note that the antonym for ‘mothering’ is neglect. And when you think about it, when we neglect something, we give it no attention at all, no care or interest. This Mother’s Day, why not take some time to appreciate those ‘mothers’ who fill the need in your life for that little bit of TLC. And while you’re appreciating them, take a look around for those people in your life who might need some mothering themselves, after all, we do need to ‘embrace universal motherhood’!

Cooler months and arthritis in our pets

The cooler weather is finally here and with it can come the signs of arthritis in your pets. Every year osteoarthritis affects thousands of pets. This condition affects both humans and animals. The joints most commonly affected in your pets are the hips, shoulders, knees, elbows and wrists. Sadly, in some cases its crippling effects are unavoidable due to conformation, injury, joint abnormalities, being overweight, getting older and general wear and tear. This condition affects the larger more active breeds more and they often develop ongoing problems. In most cases, dealing with this condition is entirely manageable if you can have it diagnosed and treated early in the disease cycle. If you work closely with your vet to get the right ongoing treatment and support, your pet can have a better quality of life. The clinical signs to watch out for include: spending more time sleeping, difficulty getting up, problems climbing stairs, sitting or resting in abnormal position, limping, stiff after resting, avoiding stairs or not interested in going for walks, change in appetite, trembling, appearing withdrawn. Arthritic joints almost always have cartilage that has started to deteriorate, so it does not act like a cushion between the bones as it is supposed to. The fluid inside the joint loses its lubricating properties and the joints stiffen up. This causes muscle wastage and leads to inflammation and pain. Pain in osteoarthritis can be ignored and put down to old age when your pet is not moving as well or not interested in going for a walk. However, animals can react quietly to pain rather than cry out. This is because there is a difference between acute pain and chronic pain, where the effects are slower and the animal responds by not doing as much. The best way to find out if your pet is in pain is to have a vet examination and if needed prescribe pain relief and joint support injections, and then watch for the results. There are a lot of things you can do for your pet to prevent the onset of arthritis and alleviate pain. One of the most important ways is to create a comfortable warm environment especially during winter. Keep them away from draughts, get a bed off the ground and with a lot of comfortable padding which is better than a blanket. Gentle exercise on a lead can be beneficial, and a warm hydrobath during winter is really good. If your dog is showing any of the symptoms described or has osteoarthritis, there are a number of treatments available from your vet and it is a good idea to look at using supportive products such as enriched dog food, Omega 3, green lip mussel, shark cartilage and glucosamine supplements. Remember, as in humans, arthritis can be a lifelong condition, but with early diagnosis and treatment from your vet and lifestyle changes, your pet can lead a comfortable and enjoyable life.

Rotary Club of Brisbane Taylor Bridge Update

by Dee Douglas

What an exciting month for our club! We held our first meeting to organize the Gala Spectacular (12th July) to raise funds to buy a dinghy for Sailability. Our volunteers who help at the sailing for the disabled every Tuesday are reporting that the new dinghy (or two) is going to make a huge difference. The number of sailors (clients) has increased dramatically and most days are almost booked out. The members of the Rotary Club of Taylor Bridge were proud to also assist two volunteer organizations this month; Radio Lollipop and Montrose Access. Montrose Access representative, Justin Bobbermein, gratefully accepted a donation cheque from Rotarian Damian. After 80 years, Montrose Access is moving into new premises and donations to pay for the fit-outs are more important than ever. Brisbane Rotary was responsible for the fund-raising to build the current premises in 1932 and the Rotary Wheel and other memorabilia will be installed in the new premises. President Stephen and Damian presented Bruce Ulquorn from Radio Lollipop with a cheque and thanked him for his enlightening speech about the value of having Radio Lollipop in hospitals. Their purpose is to provide care, comfort, play and entertainment for those children who are forced to lie in beds awaiting treatment. Read more about their amazing volunteer work www.radiolollipop.org. Visit our club and be surprised at how Rotary has changed over the years. While the focus is always on helping those in need, our vibrant new club encourages every member to network their business, share interests and most of all, to socialize and have fun making new friends. Once a week (if your time permits) people like you get together for just one hour and find ways to help others in our local community. It is life changing and it’s exciting to know that you really are making a difference, both locally and world-wide. Meetings are held on Tuesday nights at 6.45pm for a 7pm start and finish at 8pm with a light supper. For more information, phone Dee on 3379 2002 or send an email to dddouglas@optusnet.com.au.

Don’t let back pain rob you of your life’s best any more!

Finally, the truth about BACK PAIN! Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions? • L ower Back Pain or Stiffness • M uscle spasm or strains • B ulging lumbar discs • N umbness or soreness in your legs • S hooting hip or thigh pain • S ciatica Having back and leg pain can bring life to a standstill. You might not be able to play golf, work, pick up the grandkids or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep.

Is back pain keeping you from enjoying what you love to do?

You’ve got too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced with the kids or the grandkids?

Life is too short to let pain slow you down. Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you something is wrong. Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough anti-inflammatories, narcotics or other pain pill. But if you mask the pain, it can prevent your back from healing – maybe even damage it further (anti-inflammatories work at a cellular level preventing healing). Many of the pain medications available are quite addictive and can have devastating side effects like heart attacks and catastrophic gastric haemorrhage or kidney failure. Here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic … “ Ma n ipu lation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.” - British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” - Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery This means in just a matter of days or weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, being able to pick up the grand-children or travelling again. So many people have said “... if only I’d found you sooner ...” that, for only $37 you can find out whether this amazing treatment can help.

Have a professional evaluation of your spine for only $37!

If you were searching for one of Australia’s finest flowering trees, it would be hard to beat the Silky Oak. With a collection of more than 1000 Australian native trees, Sherwood Arboretum is home to several fine examples of the Grevillea robusta, which simply outshine most other flowering competitors. The Silky Oak’s fern-like leaves and orange/yellow comblike flowers offer a stunning display in late Spring and an irresistible attraction for birds, insects and fruit bats. However, a word of caution about those dark green leaves, with their silky and silvery undersides: they are capable of causing serious skin irritations. Arboretum visitors can appreciate one reason why Silky Oaks have become a rare sight in the rainforests of southeastern Queensland and northern New South Wales. These tall upright trees, growing from 10 to 30 m in height, quickly became a firm favourite with furniture makers and also a popular choice for window joinery because of resistance to wood rot. English explorer and botanist, Alan Cunningham provided the first European description of this Australian favourite in 1830. Since then, our sub-tropical Silky Oaks have become ‘a global traveller’ because of their qualities of being drought and frost tolerant and adaptable to cooler climates and soil types. You can see them in shady avenues in south-western China, shading coffee and tea plantations around the world and for forestry projects in Africa and the United States. There’s a chance to meet some of the many birds which enjoy the Arboretum’s trees, during a guided bird walk, from the Jolimont Street car park, with Professor Hugh Possingham at 7am on Sunday May 25. Chelmer and District Probus Club Update

by Coral Reichman, Membership and Publicity Officer

The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship. In March, we held our first AGM and celebrated a very successful year, one of establishing the club and getting to know each other. At our meeting in March, Dr Andrew Rozefelds, head of Ancient Environments, Geology and Paleontology at the Queensland Museum spoke about ‘Museum Exhibitions: turning Pandora’s Box into an Alladin’s Cave’. Dr Rozefelds started his talk with a quiz on dinosaurs and, to our surprise, we discovered we didn’t know quite as much as we thought we did! He told us about the diverse fossil finds ‘unearthed’ almost daily in Queensland and gave us an insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes in the museum with the focus on the latest exhibition ‘Lost Creatures’. In April, Dick Bennett, the publicity officer from Brisbane Seniors On-line (BSOL), gave us an overview of this not-for-profit organisation and how it offers affordable computer training for seniors and over-50’s using volunteers. He brought us up to date on current issues such as computer security, what to do with e-waste, phone fraud and much more. Dick very willingly answered all our questions. In coming months, we will hear about the current controversies involving the mining and agricultural industries and a recent traveller’s tales of discovering Greenland and Iceland without the chilblains. Our outings officer has been busy organising many varied outings for us to enjoy this year. Our next outing will be a trip to the ABC studios in South Bank to see how a radio station works, which many of us are looking forward to. This will be followed by lunch at a nearby eatery with much convivial conversation. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. For further information, please ring Coral on 3379 7540.

Celebrating our community centres

A Community Centre Day will be held on Friday 23 May, from 10am – 2.00pm at Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre to celebrate neighourhood/community centres throughout Australia and to promote activities and events available to everyone in our community. The program on the day includes an information session on services/benefits available through Centrelink, as well as guest speakers. There will also be a free sausage sizzle courtesy of the Grumpy Old Men who meet weekly at the centre. Computer lessons and pottery demonstrations and the opportunity to meet the Seniors Enjoying an Active Lifestyle and maybe some little people who come to Time to Play every Tuesday and the mixed social group for all ages. Bargain hunters will also enjoy access to the Thrift Shop. Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre is located at 38 Thallon Street, Sherwood and can be contacted by calling 3379 6963.

Sherwood Probus Club Update

by Pam Dale

April was a busy month for Sherwood Probus members with many activities and opportunities to enjoy fun, fellowship and friendship. Our cruise on the Brisbane River on the Lady Brisbane was a wonderful day. After many days of heavy rain, the weather was perfect. Well known historian David Gibson did the commentary about various places and of life on the river, now and in the early days of settlement in 1825. A magic day. Mid April, the theatre group loved the magnificent production of The King and I starring Lisa McCune and Teddy Tahoe Rhodes. Government house was visited while the Governor was in residence the day before Anzac Day and a lovely morning tea was provided. We then had lunch at Botanical Café at Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens. Members enjoyed the guided tour of wonderful Cai Guoqiang “Falling Back to Earth” exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art, followed by lunch at a nearby venue. The lunch group continue to meet on the second Wednesday each month at a local golf club to enjoy good food, laughter Page 8 - May 2014 - The Local News

and pleasant conversation. Much fun and laughter ensured a good night for everyone when the dinner group met at a local restaurant recently. The Mah Jong group now meets every Thursday afternoon at our meeting venue and continues to have a lot of fun and friendship. The Scrabble Group now meets at 1pm at a nearby sports club. May’s selection for the book group is Barbara Kingsolver’s Flight Behaviour. Probus offers many member benefits to keep you young, including international and domestic travel, day trip excursions, luncheons and opportunities to meet new friends. Probus is a community service activity of Rotary clubs. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club. Retire from work, not life. Age is not a number but how you feel inside.

Myla Terrace Tennyson Noise Barrier Construction work has commenced to erect a sound barrier along the Myla Terrace section of the Tennyson rail corridor. The sound barrier is to reduce the impact of noise from trains and rail operations for residents on Myla Terrace. Queensland Rail undertook a community consultation activity last year which was instrumental in helping my Department of Transport and Main Roads make the decision on how to best mitigate rail related noise in the area. I am pleased to be delivering improved noise mitigation for the benefit of the Tennyson community. Bug Attack Bug Attack is the theme of a schools-based competition pitched at getting students hooked on agriculture. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) competition offers engaging ways for students to understand skills in the Australian Science Curriculum. Focussing on bugs raiding food stuffs in the kitchen pantry, students from prep to year 12 will undertake hands-on experiments, observing bugs in the classroom and at home to learn more about insect pests and hopefully ignite a love of agricultural science and research. Prizes include digital microscopes and cameras, gardening packs, science kits and educational DVDs. Entries for the DAFF Hermitage Research Facility Schools Science Competition close on Friday 27 June. For more information, phone 13 25 23 or visit www. daff.qld.gov.au/plants/field-crops-and-pastures/research/hermitage-competition. Youth ambassador program nominations open I am pleased to announce nominations are now open for the Queensland Youth Strategy Ambassadors program 2014–2015. The ambassadors will be exemplary role models under the Queensland Youth Strategy’s six areas of connection – family, friends and social networks; education, training and employment; health and wellbeing; volunteering and participation; supports and services; and arts and culture. One ambassador will be chosen for each area and receive a $1000 bursary for personal or professional development related to the area. Young people can nominate to be a Queensland Youth Strategy Ambassador or be nominated by someone else. Applications are open until 2 June 2014. Graceville Community Garden Update

by John Fitz-Walter

The Graceville Community Gardeners and members of our community wish to thank the Hon Scott Emerson MP Member for Indooroopilly Minister for Transport and Main Roads for his assistance with the donation of used railway sleepers for use in our community garden. The sleepers have begun being used to create a terraced area for community members to have gatherings on after each Sunday’s working bee and for other special community gatherings. ‘Working bees’ are true to their name, not just the Sunday gatherings of community members. In a year, the Graceville Community Garden bees have produced over 115 kilograms of honey under Tim Auld’s management of their hive. By donating a small amount to assist with the costs involved in keeping the bees, gardeners can take home some garden sweetness each week. GCG member John Ullman meets two Queensland Rail The raised timber edging of the garden beds is well employees to assist with the delivery of hardwood sleepers underway so that the garden beds will be ready for for the Graceville Community Garden. spring plantings and we now have three wormery’s in operation for vermicomposting at the gardens. Thank you to Fundies at Corinda for their weekly donation of vegetable scraps used to feed our very contented worms. Many thanks go to Councillor for Tennyson Nicole Johnston for signage on the corner of Oxley Road and Acacia Avenue to assist with directions to the community gardens. The Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, at the corner of Waratah Ave and Cordalba St, Graceville. Everyone is invited to be part of the regular working bee and morning tea from 7am to 10am each Sunday. All are welcome. Page 10 - May 2014 - The Local News

Hello Readers There has been considerable conversation amongst the community about the shift of Year 7 into secondary school from the commencement of 2015. A number of families I have spoken to are concerned that the secondary environment is not appropriate for children in Year 7 who are only 11 or 12 years old. Parents do not want to see their children lost amongst large numbers of older students. Where schools do not have effective programs in place for a smooth transition for students into secondary, parents have every right to express their concern. Queensland is one of the last states to move Year 7 into the secondary environment and the shift will bring the schooling structure in our state into line with New South Wales and Victoria that have educated Year 7 students within the high school setting for decades. St John’s Anglican College is somewhat unique in Queensland in that we have always had Year 7 within the secondary environment and was established with programs in place in Upper Primary and in Middle School to ensure a smooth and successful transition. St John’s students are guided towards working with greater independence while still in primary classes. They are able to access lessons and information from class websites set up by their teachers and can review their lessons and assessment tasks via remote means. Many of their learning activities utilise Web 2.0 tools and students can save their digital creations on the class website, leave comments, questions and blogs and therefore interact with their learning community online as well as face to face. The teachers also regularly utilise a strategy called ‘the flipped classroom’ which describes a reversal of traditional teaching methods. Instead of the teacher providing the students with all the content information they require and then setting homework based on that information, the Upper primary teachers flip this model and set homework that requires students to read information and watch videos from the class website. Valuable class time is then used for higher order thinking and problem solving. Students and their teachers are able to engage in deep discussions, analysing and evaluating the information they have gained. This ‘flipped’ model shifts the focus from passive to active learning, really engages the students and prepares them for more advanced learning experiences. St John’s next Open Day for Kindergarten to Year 12 is Saturday, 30 August 9 am to 12 noon. It would be wonderful to welcome you to the College so that you can learn more about our Year 7 transition program.

e g e l l o C l a v i n r Ca ay M Sat 17 noon 12 m to 6p

A place for INNOVATION St John’s is a collaborative, online, interconnected learning community. Our teachers motivate their students to use new technologies, to source real time information and to create and publish their work. They are being well prepared for a rapidly changing future.
