An outing by bus to the ABC studios at Southbank was part of a busy week for Oxley Shed men who have now settled into a routine of regular Monday work day, Tuesday fellowship day and monthly outings on days arranged to suit particular circumstances. Fourteen of our members and our driver, Jack, a volunteer driver from the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre, enjoyed a most interesting and informative tour of the ABC at Southbank. We are now looking forward to our next event which will be a visit to an automated dairy near Beaudesert. Our Treasurer, Michael Reynolds, combines his treasurer role with that of event organiser and has arranged a number of such outings in the program for next year. Now we have enclosed our shed we can look forward to the task of setting up our workshop equipment so that the hobby work can begin. Our aim is to not only to be a place of peace and refuge for members but to offer anyone seeking to have a sense of purpose in their retirement the opportunity to enjoy it. Being involved in the community and doing things that bind us together not only pleases us but it brings joy and a sense well being in widening our horizons. This is reflected in the shed’s close working partnership with the Sherwood Neighbour Centre, Club Oxley and our association with other community groups. Some of our members also belong to these groups and this affords us the opportunity to interact in a beneficial and meaningful way. We try to make our leaders tasks as simple as we can and one of the joys of being a shed member is that there is always someone to step in to take on the task of helping out and giving the leader the backup needed when he chooses to take a holiday break or attend to other commitments. Publicity officer Jim Pascoe is taking a family break with family including his grandchildren on a caravan stay at the Sunshine Coast, our catering leader is taking his wife on a Ghan experience and two of our executive members will be combining a holiday break when attending the Australian Men’s shed AGM in Ballarat in October. In our outreach endeavours, we will be combining with Club Oxley, and the Oxley Church congregation in our annual breakup luncheon on 23rd November and this will be held at the Club Oxley, in Englefield Road Oxley.

Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

It seems to be that society celebrates the strong, or those perceived to be anyway. We are all about the winners, the heroes, strength and invincibility. And we all strive to be strong. We want to be known as someone who withstands trials, who stands firm and unwavering. We want to be those people and we want to be around those people. We don’t like weakness, generally. I’m no psychologist but I wonder if it’s because it reminds us of our own weakness and in a world that is full of platitudes about how strong we are on the inside, about overcoming obstacles and standing up, speaking out and standing up, that just won’t do. Here’s what I don’t get: if we logically can understand that we are all, each and every one of us, weak at times, why is it such a big deal? I suspect the answer lies in our past memories of being hurt, of being in a vulnerable position, mentally, emotionally, physically, that we shy away from the possibility of having to go through that pain again. And we are right. It’s not prudent to reveal your weaknesses to those who can, or who have in the past, hurt you. We must be wise about where and with whom we make ourselves vulnerable. Yet I think there is also wisdom in taking a chance. Opening up to someone about how you’re feeling, really feeling, can path the way to deeper more meaningful communication. Sometimes, until we make ourselves vulnerable we can’t truly enter into worthwhile relationships. We need to let the other person see us warts and all. And we also need to allow them to do the same. When we are sharing vulnerabilities, we form bonds that can lay a wonderful foundation for future connection. There are times, though, when we make ourselves vulnerable and we don’t know the outcome. We have no idea how that person will respond to us showing them our weaknesses, so it’s risky. The hope is that they will respond with sensitivity, gentleness and kindness. Now, you and I both know that certainly isn’t always the case is it? We’ve all been mistreated by someone we thought we could trust, we’ve all shared something close to our hearts, only to find it used against us at a later date. It’s awful. It hurts. And it’s hard to move past. But in order to not allow those incidences to affect the rest of our lives and relationships, we simply must risk again. We must resolve to not let the hurt grow into bitterness and resentment. Allowing someone else’s actions to change who we are makes no sense. Know that for every person who doesn’t handle your weakness in the right way, there are ten others who will. We just need to be discerning and never give up risking the hurt to find the ones who are worth risking it for.

Chelmer and District Probus Club Update

The newly re-established Probus Club of Chelmer and District draws its members mainly from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley. Our new Outings Officer has been very busy putting in place a varied program for the last quarter of the year. In September, many members and guests enjoyed the beauty of spring with a guided tour of the Roma Street Parklands, home to a range of Australian sub-tropical vegetation as well as beautiful examples of flora from around the world. And not to forget the public art works and the story each piece has to tell. We finished the morning with a lovely lunch. Members will visit Government House one of Queensland’s showcase public buildings in October to experience its beauty and history and learn about the role and function of our Governor. January will see our members at the Queensland Tennis Centre for an exciting day of tennis at The Queensland Open. At our last meeting on September 25th, Noel Davis spoke to us about the life and works of Walter Taylor his grandfather. We all knew the Walter Taylor bridge and the Uniting Church in Graceville, but we were not so aware about his involvement with a large number of other significant buildings and bridges in SE Queensland. At our next meeting on October 23rd, Justin Howes will tell us about his work in the application of forensic DNA profiling in Queensland. So come along to learn what is happening in this field. The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees. Headaches and Neck Pain Addressing the Cause

If You Suffer From Headaches or Neck Pain That Keep Coming Back, These Are The Facts You Must Know Living with headaches is tough.

Could This Be Your Solution?

Day after day of being miserable, irritable, and looking a lot older than you really are. The frustration of knowing that your friends and family don’t understand what you’re going through. Add this to doctors’ visits, MRI’s and CT scans -- which only come back with “normal” results. And that’s not all … trying one medication after another, feeling like you’re on a merry-go-round of drugs. All this is enough to make anyone want to scream!

We offer a fresh approach, where we aim to identify and correct the actual cause of your problem. You owe it to yourself to find out if your headaches or neck pain are associated with an abnormal neck curve, with a $30 Headache Evaluation. What does this include? Everything. Take a look at what you will receive: • An in-depth consultation about your headaches where we will listen … really listen … to the details of your unique situation. • A complete neuromuscular and skeletal examination of the head and neck so we can find the problem. • A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if posture or abnormal spinal curves are associated with your pain … (NOTE: If needed, these are bulk billed). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-rays where we’ll map out how you can get rid of your headaches once and for all.

IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS: 1) An abnormal spinal curve is far more common in people who suffer from ongoing headaches and neck pain 2) An abnormal spinal curve can be readily identified using a standing x-ray image. 3) An abnormal spinal curve can be consistently improved or corrected using tested, proven techniques.

Why not get rid of those debilitating headaches today? Read the full facts on this page!

We are Drs Keith and Michael Charlton, and we’ve been helping patients with neck pain and headaches live pain free by improving posture and restoring normal neck curves using specialized equipment. Every week we hear how people suffer from severe headaches – statements like … • “The pain just keeps coming back” • “Nothing I have tried gives lasting results” • “I feel like my head is in a vice.” • “My eyes hurt and I’m always tired.” • “I’ve had headaches since childhood.” • “The pain affects my moods and then my relationships suffer” They tell us they’re sick and tired of jumping from one headache medication to the next. Imagine being able to live life like a normal person again, pain free and without headaches -- being able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends, and not have to worry that your headache will hit you at just the wrong time. More Pills Are Not The Solution As the clinic is actually a research centre for neck disorders and Dr Keith has two higher degrees, we are sticklers for the facts, so here’s what science says about abnormal neck curves and posture. • The further forward the head goes over the shoulders, the higher the incidence of headaches (Cephalalgia 2006;26(3):314).

• Headache patients show significantly s t r a i g ht e n e d c e r v ic a l c u r ve configurations (Headache 1993;33:90-5). • Reversal of the neck curve leads to total spinal malalignment, rounding of the shoulders, headache, neck pain, scapular pain and possibly even low back pain (Orthop Traumatol

Graceville Community Garden Update by John Fitz-Walter Graceville Community Garden - a well versed garden

RESTORE . RECOVER REPAIR . REVAMP Loose Cushions . Recliners . Genoas Dining Chairs . Polishing & Restoration Tub Chairs . Lounges . Repairs Soft Furnishings

You may recall the garden rhyme: Mary, Mary, quite contrary, How does your garden grow? With silver bells, and cockle shells, And pretty maids all in a row. However, this English verse is not suited to the Graceville Community Garden. Robby Louie Stevenson said, ‘It is a golden maxim to cultivate the garden for the nose, and the eyes will take care of themselves’ and Sydney Eddison stated that ‘Gardens are a form of autobiography’ so to consider the Graceville Community Garden as being a Graceville community autobiography would be reasonable as this garden is its gardeners. This is a garden that grows their interests, passions and lives. Orson Scott Card considered that ‘unemployment is capitalism’s way of getting you to plant a garden’, not that we are hard up on our luck, however, it would be fair to say that a garden can be many things. ‘Give me odorous at sunrise a garden of beautiful flowers where I can walk undisturbed,’ said Walt Whitman and finally a word from Douglas William Jerrold, ‘Earth is here so kind, that just tickle her with a hoe and she laughs with a harvest’. To celebrate the season of spring we wish to grow some verse at GCG and invite you to share your thoughts, rhymes or a saying about a garden or gardening. A selection of these will be placed around the GCG garden for people to share while enjoying their time in the garden. Three of these verses will be rewarded with a jar of ‘Graceville Gold’, yes, this is the golden honey given by our garden’s bees! Please email your garden verse to John at jfitzwalter@ bigpond.com or place it in the letterbox in front of the Benarrawa Community Development Centre. We will publish a selection in a future issue of The Local News so get your pens and spades out! A children’s garden playgroup, Southside Nature Babes meet at the garden on Wednesday morning, 9am - 11am, for more information contact Kerrie or Paula at Benarrawa on 3379 9925. The Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, at the corner of Waratah Ave & Cordalba St, Graceville. Everyone is invited to be part of the regular working bee and morning tea from 7am to 10am each Sunday.

From the desk of SCOTT EMERSON MP Member for INDOOROOPILLY

Sherwood Respite Service Seniors Expo. Congratulations to the Sherwood Respite Service for its Seniors Expo which was held as part of this year’s Seniors Week. More than 20 organisations, specialising in helping seniors in our community, participated in the expo with displays, and providing information and advice to seniors and their families. Special guest was Noeline Brown who attended the expo in her role as the Australian Ambassador for Aging. I was pleased to be able to attend and support this local organisation which provides such a valuable service in our community. Have your say on Queensland’s electricity future. Indooroopilly electorate residents and businesses have an opportunity to speak up on the future of the State’s electricity by providing feedback on the government’s 30 Year Electricity Strategy discussion paper. The state government is working hard to address the build-up of costs which are driving the unsustainable electricity price rises we have seen over the past few years. Having a strong electricity supply system relies on government and industry working together to establish a common understanding of the issues facing the sector and negotiating a way forward on key issues. I encourage you to make the most of this opportunity to have a say on the changes needed to address the immediate and long-term challenges for Queensland and help shape the final 30 Year Electricity Strategy. The discussion paper is available at www.dews.qld.gov. au, with submissions closing on 6 December 2013. Nominations open for Disability awards. The Queensland Disability Awards are an opportunity to recognise, as well as celebrate, the commitment and passion of people who work hard to support some of Queensland’s most vulnerable members of our community. The awards offer the opportunity to shine a light on the many achievements and hard work of those who give their time to help make another person’s life a little easier. This is an opportunity to recognise the outstanding contribution of people and organisations in our community who have shown passion, excellence and vision to help improve the quality of life of people living with disability, their families and carers. Nominate a local disability champion online in any of the six award catagories: Inspiring Individual, Community Initiative, Education and the Arts, Employment and Training, Community Awareness and Technology and Innovation. Nominations close on Wednesday 27 November 2013. For updates about the awards, visit www.communities.qld.gov.au/disability.

SHERWOOD / INDOOROOPILLY RSL Sub-Branch Update by Kevin Alcock

The year has been a busy one, starting with our Boer War Service in February, at the St Matthew’s Anglican Cemetery, followed by Anzac Day, our Coral/Balmoral commemoration in May, and our recent Kokoda Commemoration in August. M.DICK ad:45mmWx65mmH 20/01/10 12 Our next commemoration will, of course, be Remembrance Day on the 11th of November, when we will be having a service at the Subbranch commencing at 10.25 a.m. Whilst I realise that this will be a Monday, we would welcome all members of the public who are able to attend our service at the Sub-branch at 2 Clewley Street, Corinda. On Saturday the 14th of September, we hosted a forum for younger veterans to see how Councillor for Richlands Ward we can better adapt and communicate with the latest veterans coming out of the conflicts in the Middle East. Whilst I would have liked to have had a larger group of younger veterans Inala Library, attend, those that were here gave great feed back which will help us with our communication Civic Centre, Corsair Avenue, with this group in the future. The CEO of the RSL’s Mates4Mates organisation, Mr Michael Inala. Quinn assisted us in acting as our facilitator on the day, contributing to a successful outcome. In October a group of Contemporary Veterans from the Mates4Mates program will be paddling sea kayaks from the Sydney Opera House to Southbank in Brisbane, leaving Sydney on the 19th of October and arriving at Southbank on the 9th of November. Other activities through the program are a group climbing the 10 highest peaks in Australia in October. Another group have participated in a cattle muster. For more information on Phone: 3407 1211 the program check out the Mates4Mates facebook page as this has been a most worthwhile richlands.ward@ecn.net.au contribution based on similar programs in the UK and the US.

I’ve always been curious as to how much practical experience cosmetic injectors have access to, whether it be on a refresher course basis, or a new product launch. Well, I can tell you that my curiosity is now fully satisfied! As you know, we have the wonderful Dr Andrew Molloy on board to administer our cosmetic injectables. It was at Andrew’s request that I was his model for both a refresher course, and new product launch, held in Sydney on 30th and 31st August. Unbelievable! Just unbelievable! The course was over two full days and boy, not only was the workload high, but both the attendees and their work were minutely scrutinised. No stone was left unturned. Training was conducted using Phi callipers (everything in the universe is based on the proportion 1 to 1.618- often called the Phi or Divine/Golden proportion). This universal system of balance and harmony is the only reliable, methodical, mathematical and logical approach to facial assessment and enhancement. The callipers were used to maximise each individual models beauty by bringing the proportions of their features as close to Phi as possible within the divine proportion for that individual face, using the existing blueprint of their facial anatomy! No model got the same lips and cheek bones. Each injector worked towards the ideal facial contour, harmonious proportions and balanced facial curves. The closer a face is to Phi proportion the more attractive they are considered. Both Andrew and I returned exhausted (yes, being a model is exhausting!) yet fully charged and ready to put the new techniques and products into practice. We are a clinic that focuses on complete facial aesthetics so, are my features aesthetically balanced? Are they in keeping with my age? Do I look more refreshed and feel better in myself? Well, opposite is a picture of myself two days prior to the injectables. Below is a link to a picture of myself 10 days post injectables – I will leave you to be the judge. www.facebook.com/pages/Advanced-Skin-CareClinic/335166836502782 If you are considering injectables or topping up what you currently have, then we would love to give you a free, no obligation consultation.

Sherwood Probus Club Update Retirement – everybody’s doing it – but Probus does it better.

by Pam Dale

Another busy month has passed with lots of activities and outings. We visited the Queensland Art Gallery for their exhibition of Quilts 1700-1945. This fascinating guided tour with full explanation showed the intricate work of quilters throughout the ages. Another guided tour was of the newly refurbished City Hall with its wonderful auditorium, followed by a guided tour of the Brisbane Museum which has many displays, including the enjoyable revisiting of Expo 1988 which brought back many great memories. Lunch at the refurbished Shingle Inn, situated in City Hall, was enjoyed by our members. The Queensland Museum’s remarkable exhibition of stunning artefacts revealing Afghanistan’s rich culture was another wonderful day out. There are more than 230 priceless treasures, some thousands of years old. These objects of extraordinary beauty and significance are from the heart of ancient Afghanistan. A short film at the beginning reveals a story of bravery by a small group of men who risked their lives to protect their nation’s cultural heritage and showcases some of the most remarkable archaeological finds in all of Central Asia, hidden from view for decades. The garden group continues to meet at member’s homes to enjoy their gardens and exchange plants and cuttings. Grease at the Lyric Theatre was enthusiastically enjoyed by our recycled teenagers. David Williamson’s play When Dad Married Fury starring John Wood was the story of a family’s reaction to their millionaire father’s will. Crossfire by Dick Francis and Felix Francis is the book club’s choice for October. Our happy scrabblers are very enthusiastic and having fun on alternate Wednesday afternoons. Likewise the Mah Jong group who meet on Thursday mornings. The dinner and lunch groups continue to enjoy outings each month where good conversation and good food make the occasion. Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area. Contact Pat 3372 7525 or Pam 3375 4698 to find out more about Sherwood Probus Club.

Friends of Sherwood arboretum by Andrew Benison

- Brisbane’s living treasure -

If you ever felt the urge to hug a tree, the brachychiton rupestris could be the tree you’ve been searching for. Better known as the Queensland bottle tree, this eye-catching specimen captures all of the romance and toughness of the Australian bush. If you walk into the Sherwood Arboretum from the Joseph Street entry and head south-west towards the river, you will see a magnificent narrow-leaf bottle tree nearly as old as the 88-year-old heritage-listed Arboretum. Capable of living up to 120 years, this hardy, iconic Queensland tree can withstand long periods without water and can also tolerate a variety of climates and soil types. The tree grows best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sunshine. Contrary to popular belief, the swollen trunk, which can reach 2m in diameter, is not hollow but is primarily used for water storage. Not surprisingly, the tree has helped sustain both people and animals in times of need. For example, Aboriginals once hollowed out the soft bark to create reservoir-like recesses. In urban areas, without the competition for light, the Queensland bottle tree normally reaches up to 7m in height with a canopy spread of 3m to 4m. In the bush, the maximum height can be 18m to 20m. This semi-deciduous tree drops its leaves before a flowering period from October to December. The characteristic bottle-shape will normally develop after some five to eight years, so patience is a virtue, if you’re planning to grow this wonderful example of our bush. Local creativity on show this month

The Sherwood Uniting Church would like to invite residents to their Exhibition of creative efforts by members of the congregation to be held at the Inala Art Gallery and Community Centre, Corsair Avenue entrance, in October. Entitled ‘Uniting in Creativity’, Councillor Nicole Johnstone will officially open the Exhibition on Monday, 14 October, at 10.00 am and light refreshments will be served. The Exhibition will include paintings, photography, quilting, craft goods, handwork, cards and a working model of a fairground. Some items will be for sale on the day. The Gallery will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10.00am to 4.00pm and Saturdays from 9.00am to 1.00pm from 14 to 31 October. Page 10 - October 2013 - The Local News

Hello Readers Globalization is flattening the world and challenging companies, countries and individuals as never before, as Tom Friedman points out in his 2005 book, The World is Flat. Societies need citizens who are smarter, more creative, and more capable of leading, managing, collaborating and networking with productive people around the world. In the future, people won’t think twice about working with someone at a distance on a collaborative project. Being able to collaborate effectively requires a range of skills including listening, evaluation of ideas and suggestions, problem solving, articulation and communication of ideas, reflection and learning from others. The St John’s newly developed Future Thinkers Program is an extension program which provides students with the opportunity to better understand the elements of creative and critical thinking, and to practice and enhance their own creative and critical thinking skills whilst collaborating both locally and globally. The course work for the Future Thinkers Program is set in the context of some important global challenges that affect us all, and to which we have no clear “correct” solutions, for example: the risk and spread of serious infectious diseases in epidemics in modern societies, the implications of increasing human population on global resources, energy, environment and climate, and the challenges that the development of robotics in our everyday lives will impact the future in which we live. Possible solutions to global issues such as these are hotly debated, and give the perfect setting to practice recognising and evaluating facts, ideas, opinions and arguments. Special emphasis is put on understanding and extracting the arguments in different kinds of discourses, analysing the arguments and discerning whether the reasoning is correct. Students work on topics and concepts that they are engaged with and develop actual “plans of actions” for problems and innovations that they have identified. The Future Thinkers Program is offered, by invitation, to students in Years 9 and 10. If you would like the opportunity to find out more or if you would like your child considered for this program please contact St John’s , enquiries@sjac. qld.edu.au or by phone 07 3372 0176. The foundation of St John’s educational philosophy is personalised, future focused education that leads to exceptional student achievement.

Veterinary Voice by Diane M Sheehan BVSc

Silent killer - rat bait

Last month a client came in for advice because her dogs had gained access to under the house where rat baits were placed. Because the dogs were showing no signs of illness she thought they would be fine. However, once ingested there is a time lapse for the anti-coagulant to destroy the blood clotting factors. Only when the dogs were bumped did they show signs of internal bleeding. Once this occurs, it is not too late to save the dogs but the earlier the treatment the less chance they have to die. One of the biggest dangers to your pets are the widely available pesticides used to kill rats and mice which are the anticoagulant rodenticides. Although, in the past, warfarin based products were the most commonly used, with the increase of warfarin resistant rats, a lot of research has gone into developing what are known as second generation anticoagulants. These products are widely used and commonly found in kitchen cupboards which is why it is inevitable that accidental poisoning of your pets with these products continues to occur. The major threat from ingestion of these products is that there may be no early symptoms. Once ingested, these rodenticides are very readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and then starts to accumulate in the liver. Here in the liver they have their effect of slowing down or stopping the formulation and activation of clotting factors. This whole process is dependent on there being active vitamin K and Vitamin k being recycled by an enzyme. This enzyme is vital to the process and if this process is shut down by the poison, then the level of vitamin K becomes exhausted and clotting factors are not produced. Generally problems can occur within 12 - 36 hours following your pet eating some rat poison but in my experience pet owners will notice symptoms two to six days afterwards. The signs to look out for include: excessive bleeding which includes internal bruising; depression; lethargy/ weakness; difficulty breathing; blood in faeces; and a swollen abdomen. Early treatment would include making the animal vomit and seeing the blue green, purple colours in the vomit. Then using Vitamin K therapy in injection and orally with or without blood transfusion. The good thing is that treatment outcomes are excellent with a high survival rate. As always prevention is better than cure especially if you have a puppy, remember they are inquisitive and playful so keep them safe. If we have a headache we often take paracetamol, this is a reminder that paracetamol given to your cat or dog will kill them. Cats are more sensitive to this drug than dogs. Some of the symptoms include depression, vomiting that may be blood tinged, lethargy and not eating, increased respiratory rate, panting, pale gums, muscle weakness and seizures leading to coma and death. Remember to only use pain relief subscribed by your veterinarian.
