Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Well, we are off and running in 2017. Our February Branch meeting was very well attended and the guest speaker, Deputy Commissioner Kerrith Mcdermott from Queensland Corrective Services, provided a thought provoking and interesting presentation. Renovations at Lions are progressing well and we are all keen to see the new look club. Tran Tran dinner, our first function for 2017 in February, was a great night out. Fiona fed us well with a delicious banquet, Vietnamese style. A perfect start for the year. This year, Queensland Women’s Week celebrations will be held from 6 to 12 March, and will include a state wide series of events and activities. The theme for the week is: Queensland Women: Be involved. Lead the way. This theme encourages women and girls to participate, and pursue leadership roles, in their community and workplace. National Seniors Forest Lake provides a friendly welcome to all ladies and gentlemen in the 50 something age group. There are many, many benefits of membership with National Seniors especially in these turbulent times. The National Seniors website is also a great source of more helpful information. The next meeting date is Thursday 9 March at Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands, (second Thursday of the month) 9.30am sign in, 10am start. Morning tea will be followed by a guest speaker. Join us if you can for lunch at Lions after the meeting. To our members who are unwell, our best wishes for a return to good health. We are looking forward to our first monthly trip for the year, a great destination too. Check out our Branch website www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au/. For further information about our Branch, please contact either Julie on 3278 7274 or Val on 3372 4405.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis I think it would be fair to say that generally speaking, most of us think too highly of ourselves. I have found this to be particularly true in times of crisis. We all know those people who love to rush to the aid of the person in distress and somehow seem to lay a claim to them, as though they are the only one helping or the only one that the person in crisis trusts. There are countless quotes about knowing who your friends are by who is there in your dark times. In my experience, it is often the opposite. I find that there are plenty of people only too happy to help when times are tough but only a limited number will be just as excited about your successes and be with you through all the ‘boring’ good days. As a human race (or it could be a bit of the Aussie ‘tall poppy syndrome’!), we seem to somehow find it easier to help people up than we do to celebrate with them. Because I desperately don’t want to be one of those who overrate their own importance in a time of crisis, I tend to hang back a little and don’t like to feel that I’m intruding on what is often a very private time, especially in the loss of a loved one. A friend was recently affected by the loss of a family member on her husband’s side. And me being me, I hung back. I phoned regularly, texted and let her know I was there if she needed me but what I didn’t do was attend the funeral. In my mind, I wasn’t close enough to her husband’s family to feel it was my place to be there. I caught up with my friend a week or so ago and she raised the question of why I hadn’t come to the funeral. And that’s when I realised my mistake. A funeral isn’t just about remembering the loved one and showing respect. It’s about supporting the family. And of course, I knew that but I had allowed my desire to not be one of ‘those’ people overshadow the fact that my friend could do with some support on the day. My friend has lots of friends and I knew she would be well supported by people who knew her husband’s side of the family better than I do. But imagine if all her friends had thought as I had and not felt they had a ‘right’ to be at the funeral? And as my friend pointed out (nicely - she is the loveliest person ever!), I could have just asked her if she wanted me there. Such a simple thing yet it was a question I didn’t want to bother her with amongst all the funeral arrangements and emotions. And I should have. The bottom line is, I hadn’t given enough credit to the importance of our friendship. Sometimes we can be so busy trying not to offend or overstep boundaries, that we underestimate how much we mean to people. It’s like a weird reverse humility, isn’t it? We downplay the value of ourselves and allow ‘us’ to get in the way of being there for the people we love and who love us. And we can apply this to the good times and the bad. It is just as important that we don’t underestimate our importance in others’ lives on an everyday basis, as well as the times of crisis. Do something for someone you love this week, it’ll have a bigger impact than you might think!

FLSHS students clean up in the pool The hottest month on record didn’t bother the students of Forest Lake SHS who recently became the Yagera District Swimming Champions. The students have completed their annual swimming carnival and commenced training for basketball, touch football, volleyball, rugby league and their Aspiring Athletes Program. The annual swimming carnival saw over 100 swimmers and helpers converge on Dunlop Pool where the sweltering heat couldn’t deter the team spirit and enthusiasm. A strong team of forty was then selected to represent the school Congratulations to the 2017 Yagera District Swimming Champions. at the Yagera District Swimming Championships the very next day. The school not only won the Yagera District Championship but three of their students were named Age Champions: Kambyl for the 13 years age bracket, Elliott for the 14 years and Taine for the Open Boys. While there were many outstanding performances, Erin of Year 8 displayed incredible school commitment in the 50m butterfly to finish the race, despite having to learn the stroke for the first time, just so FLSHS could be represented. Furthermore Jonah and Annika demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship by giving their age champion medallions to the rightful recipients, which were given to them in error. It had been three years since Forest Lake SHS had experienced any team success at this event with competition coming from local schools Redbank Plains, Woodcrest, Glenala, Bellbird Park and previous winner, Springfield Central. The school’s values of PRIDE – Prepared, Respected, Included, Dedicated and Educated were certainly on display and the Forest Lake community should be proud of their incredibly talented young people.

Your Teeth Your Smile by Dr Paul Holliday Disney and Dentistry There have been many new developments in dentistry over the past few years. Disney research has recently partnered with a European company ETH Zurich to produce software that can digitally create a 3D model of a person’s teeth and gums. All that is needed is a few different camera angles and the software will construct a 3D model of the teeth and gums. It is a very sophisticated system because it doesn’t need to see all the teeth. Most 3D scanning technology in dentistry requires all the tooth surfaces to be imaged but this only requires two or three external images. The software will ‘guess’ where and what size the teeth and gums should be, based on data taken from digital dentistry scans and extrapolated using their special algorithm. Even a low resolution video from an iPhone can be used to create the 3D model. Disney are not actually developing this for the dental industry but the entertainment industry. It is likely to be used in video games and movies. The nice part of the system is how simple and easy it is to create a 3D model. The system’s creators admit it cannot fully or accurately predict every tooth or gum but it provides a best guess based on its software. It can let you know where it is making assumptions so you can alter the model or leave it at your discretion. Advances like these are making dentistry easier and more comfortable. Digital scanners can take digital impressions of your teeth and gums. They require all the tooth and gum surfaces to be scanned so it isn’t as simple as the Disney system. Many people find digital impression much nicer that the traditional physical impression which is like a soft rubber material. Digital dentistry has been looking at using 3D printers to produce very strong and long lasting fillings from scanners for some time. The only problem is how to print the strongest material we have in dentistry which is porcelain. It is not easy to print this. Most laboratories these days use digital technology to mill crowns and fillings from a solid block of material rather than printing. We can print acrylic fillings but these are not as strong and they don’t last as long as current filling materials. Disney may never get involved in digital dentistry but their idea is going to help fuel new research and development which can only make dentistry more comfortable in the future.

Cancer Council is calling on Forest Lake residents to get charged up this month to help run down cancer! Registrations are now open for The March Charge – a month-long challenge encouraging all Queenslanders to run or walk to improve their health and raise funds for Cancer Council. Participants can set the distance they cover, and charge as an individual or in a team. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift urged locals to take up the challenge. “The March Charge gives everyone an opportunity to get healthy and make a difference – no matter their fitness level, Ms Clift said. “Whether you choose to walk 30km throughout the month of March, or run 100km, every kilometre brings us one step closer to a cancer free future. “All funds raised through the campaign play a vital role in transforming cancer control in Queensland and give hope to those affected by cancer. “Funds will be invested into lifesaving cancer research, prevention programs and support services for your local community. “You don’t need to be an athlete to give cancer a run for its money – join the charge and make a change! Ms Clift said the campaign also highlighted the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle. “More than 26,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Queensland – you can help reduce your risk of cancer by getting active today, Ms Clift said. “At least one third of all cancers are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices including getting active, eating well, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking and staying SunSmart. “In Australia, being overweight or obese is the cause of nearly 4000 cancer cases annually, and 1800 cancer cases are attributed to inactivity. “Cancer Council recommend Queenslanders aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate exercise, or 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity every day to improve their health. Join The March Charge today and register online at themarchcharge.com.au. Individuals and teams can set up a walking or running target, and will receive information and support on how to fundraise and reach their goals. More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available at cancerqld.org.au or 13 11 20.

Good mental health is about being able to work and study to your full potential, cope with day-to-day life stresses, be involved in your community and live life in a free and satisfying way. A young person who has good mental health has good emotional and social wellbeing and the capacity to cope with change and challenges. Feeling down, tense, angry, anxious or moody are all normal emotions for young people, but when these feelings persist for long periods of time, or if they begin to interfere with their daily life, they may be part of a mental health problem. Mental health issues can also influence how young people think and their ability to function in their everyday activities, whether at school, at work or in relationships. Most parents can tell when something is out of the ordinary, but there are also signs that suggest a young person might be experiencing a mental health problem. These are new and noticeable changes in the young person, lasting at least a few weeks, including: • not enjoying or not wanting to be involved in things that they would normally enjoy; • changes in appetite or sleeping patterns; • being easily irritated or angry for no reason; • involving themselves in risky behaviour that they would usually avoid, like taking drugs or drinking too much alcohol; • seeming unusually stressed, worried, down or crying for no reason; • expressing negative, distressing, bizarre or unusual thoughts. Tips for parents: • Talk openly and honestly with them, and let them know that you are concerned. • Reassure them that you will be there for them, and ask what they need from you. • Let them know that there is lots of help available. • Help find an appropriate service, such as a headspace centre and support them in attending. • Help them build a support network. • Look after yourself as well. Get some support by talking to someone you trust, and seek professional help for yourself if you need it. If you think you know a young person whose mental health is getting in the way of their daily life, it is important to let them know you are there to support them. For more information about mental health visit: headspace. org.au/young-people/what-is-mental-health. What’s on at Ipswich Civic Centre? Shirley Valentine Thursday 6 April | 6.30 pm Dinner & Show Adult $60.00 | Concession $55.00 Inside 42-year-old Liverpool mother and housewife, Mrs Joe Bradshaw (Mandi Lodge), is the former Shirley Valentine longing to emerge. Her self-esteem battered by school, marriage and life in general, she finds herself talking to the wall while her husband is out working. When her best friend wins an all-expenses-paid vacation to Greece for two, Shirley grasps the opportunity to head for the sun and leave her current drudgery behind, to refind herself, follow her dreams and to get a new lease on life. The note in the kitchen reads “Gone to Greece, back in two weeks”. With much humour, warmth, sympathy, human insight and a great deal of empathy for his female protagonist, Willy Russell brilliantly shows Shirley breaking out of the mould in which she was cast by society. Don’t miss this funny but moving production starring the talented and vibrant Mandi Lodge (Just The Ticket, Always...Patsy Cline, Menopause The Musical, Dumped! The Musical, and Sweeney Todd). Included in the ticket price is a delicious two-course meal and a ticket to the performance. Drinks are available for purchase at the bar.

Thursday, 6 April Dinner and Show $55.00 - $60.00 A funny but moving production about breaking out of the mould

Groove & Grape @ Studio 188, featuring Ceri McCoy Quartet Friday 31 March Ceri was born in Cyntwell, Wales to a Welsh speaking mother and Welsh/West Indian descent father. He came with his parents to live in Australia at an early age and was fascinated with the stories of life and culture his parents told him. The duality of this upbringing is clearly reflected in his career pursuits as well as being a proud speaker of Welsh and passable Spanish. He has the greatest respect for people who take the time to preserve, promote and innovate in the Arts, especially traditional art forms, and sees this as a very important aspect of Australia and the world, both now and in the future. He has played traditional Celtic music since he was a boy on the Mandolin, Whistle, Flute, Bodhran and Guitar and is an accomplished singer of traditional songs. Ceri has toured Australia extensively and throughout his study, teaching, musical and theatrical career, Ceri has additionally performed/recorded a diverse range of work and collaborated with many artists of many cultures and art forms, recently arranging the horn section and performing with rock legends ‘The Saints’ at UQ as part of the QMF Festival production ‘PIG CITY’ based on Andrew Stafford’s book of the same name.

Join Girl Guides and get the most out of life More than 30 girls went camping at Mon Repos last year to watch the turtles hatch and enjoy a long weekend camp. This year, all Guides who have turned 10 by the start of September are invited to the GurraBarra Bash. The State Jamboree will be held over seven days from 20 September to 27 September 2017 over two camps in Tropical North Queensland. Forest Lake Girl Guides have recently moved to their new home at 528 Waterford Road, Ellen Grove. Forest Lake Girl Guides are currently planning this terms program of activities and challenges with their leaders. Several girls have set their challenges to complete their Junior BP award, Baden Powell Award and Queens Guide award. Past activities have included camping, ice-skating, badge work, ten pin bowling, abseiling, plays, singing, fundraising, canoeing, archery, learning about first aid, visiting fire stations, craft, cooking, scavenger hunts, playing games all whist having lots of fun. Girl Guides enable girls and young women to grow into confident, selfrepresenting, responsible community members. Girl Guides run programs four terms a year (breaking on holidays). The 1st Junior Guides meet every Tuesday from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and the 2nd Junior Guides meet every Saturday from 9.30am to 11.30am. Girl Guides provide a non-formal education program that is a dynamic, flexible and values-based training in life skills, decision-making and leadership. The Girl Guide program has an integrated approach through teamwork, commitment to the Promise and Law, exploring the outdoors, service in the community, learning by doing and progressive self-development. The organisation offers girls the opportunity to enjoy Guiding through the Australian Guide Program. The Australian Adult leadership Program provides the framework to equip all Leaders with the skills relevant to their role in Guiding. This year we are in need of a new Leader (or perhaps two) to come and join in the fun. If you were a Guide as a girl or have no experience with Guiding at all but like the idea of being surrounded by a great group of girls of all ages and leaders who love to have fun and are passionate about providing great opportunities for these girls, then please give the Forest Lake Girl Guides a call on one of the numbers below. For more information about Girl Guides in Forest Lake please contact: Unit Leaders Fionna Percy on 0439 333 285 or Joanne Volk on 0400 019 984 or visit the website www.forestlakeguides.org.au.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach

In 2010, Parkinson Ward, now Forest Lake Ward, took out Brisbane’s Spotless Suburb Award. Accolades should go to the residents and it is against this suburban background that the Probus Club of Forest Lake is trying to serve its senior citizens. The Queensland State Government produced a document in 2016 endeavouring to make Queensland a safe and happier place for Seniors. Probus was actually mentioned in this document and our focus is to increase membership and invite retirees and semi-retirees to pay us a visit and see for yourselves what we are about. The Club concentrates on providing fun, fellowship and friendship. We have interesting speakers and trips as well enjoying scrumptious morning teas. This year, the Club will be celebrating its 15th birthday with a special function at the Jindalee Golf Club. From its humble beginnings under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Forest Lake, then President Don Mitchell, the Club has developed and steadily grown. In the 15 years of its existence, some high profile personalities have addressed the Club. A popular guest speaker, who has returned three times, has been Emeritus Professor Bob Milns AM, who even has the Antiquities Museum named after him. Then there was the late David Gibson OAM who improved our knowledge of the history of Brisbane. Dr Wally Wood, Forensic Anthropologist and famous for many years as winner of the Brisbane Christmas lights competition, explained how bones help solve crimes. We learnt much about the Great Barrier Reef from Professor Jell. The dynamic duo Thomas Nurthern and Adrian Peppia from the DNA Analysis Unit of Queensland Health set our DNA aflutter. A trip to Stanthorpe and even Kingaroy were interesting overnight stays. The Miegunyah House visit will always remind us how easily disaster could raise its head. Sampling at the Rum Distillery, a visit to Coca Cola, a prawn farm, Tropical Fruit World, Australia Zoo and a Robotic Dairy Farm are some places we visited and form only a minute example. Come and join us! We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 10am at the new Uniting Church Hall, Waterford Road, Ellen Grove. Join us and help us celebrate our birthday. For more information, contact Membership Officer Shirley 3879 9421 or President John 3372 1270. The Lake News - March 2017 - Page 13

FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update

by Alan Greig g

Warrant Officer Class One Asveen Chand (Retd) is one of our younger veterans and is currently the Treasurer of our Sub Branch and he also holds an unofficial role within our Sub Branch as the ANZAC Day March Sargeant Major. After 25 years of full time service in the regular Army, Asveen retired to spend time with his family. Asveen has seen active service in East Timor as part of Operation TANAGER and Afghanistan as part of Operation SLIPPER and non-active service in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand as part of Rifle Company Butterworth. Asveen was born and educated in Suva, Fiji Islands. After migrating to Australia, he enlisted in the Australian Regular Army at the age of 19 years. On completion of his basic recruit and initial employment training, Asveen was posted to 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, the only Infantry Parachute Battalion in the Australian Army. After completing his parachute course, he successfully completed 51 Static line Parachute jumps, which included parachuting from many American and Australian Aircrafts. During his successful military career, Asveen had many different postings including 1st Armoured Regiment (TANK) in Darwin, where he was awarded Soldiers Medallion for Exemplary Service. Other postings included a posting to 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (Commando) in Sydney, Office of Chief of Army as a personal staff to the Chief of Army in Canberra, 1st Combat Service Support Battalion in Darwin, 2nd Commando Regiment in Sydney, 1st Signal Regiment and the final posting as the Technical Advisor/Company Operations Officers, here in Brisbane at 7th Combat Service Support Battalion. Asveen has received many honours and awards and gives credit for his successful military career to his wife, Sharlu and two children Calvin and Shania, who have made many sacrifices, missing out on family Christmas, birthdays, and wedding anniversaries. Asveen is at the beginning of a new career as a Mortgage Broker, which will give him the worklife balance he is looking for. Asveen is very much focused on helping our veteran community. He has been proactive in organising financial support through our Sub Branch for Private Joshua Sayed, a 21 year old Forest Lake serving member who suffered severe brain injuries in an off-duty car crash in April last year. Our Sub Branch has also paid for relocating Joshua’s family from Forest Lake to North Lakes, where his parents can be closer to his current hospital.

February was a very busy and productive month, with the Centenary Police Crime Unit using the Lake Parklands as the meeting point for two very successful ‘Coffee with a Cop – Safety Community Consultations’. It was great to see so many locals come out and raise their concerns with the local law enforcement team whist having a Simple Bliss coffee. Please remember to contact police link on 13 444 to report any suspicious behaviour. A special thanks goes to the local police, Neighbourhood watch, my colleagues Milton Dick MP for Oxley and Minister Leeanne Enoch for their show of support.

Cr Charles Strunk at the first Coffee with a Cop at Forest Lake Shopping Centre. I’m also pleased to announce lots of exciting things are happening around the ward especially at the Lake Parklands. It brings me much joy to let everyone know I have worked hard to secure two new pieces of play equipment to be placed at the all abilities playground at the Lake Parklands. The playground will includes an amazing pirate ship, shade sails and all abilities spring seesaw, among other fun features that the kids are sure to enjoy. We are very excited to see it taking shape. I would like to remind everyone that with the hot weather there has been an increase in snake activity in our parks and homes. Snakes are a natural part of the environment we live in, so please take care when out and about and keep yards free of debris or hiding places. If you see a snake around play equipment, please contact Brisbane City Council on 3403 8888. If you encounter a snake, move away quietly, allowing it to escape. If you are bitten by a snake call 000 immediately. I’m also proud to support amazing community initiatives. One act of kindness I would like to acknowledge this month is the hard work of Angela and Chris from A Touch of Compassion Café at Ellen Grove. One of the reasons I love this community so much is because it’s so caring and giving. Every Sunday Chris and Angela and a group of volunteers with the support of Lighthouse on Woogaroo St, Forest Lake get together to cook, feed and hand out hampers to many members of our community. If you would like to donate, volunteer or take part, please don’t hesitate to contact my Forest Lake Ward office on 3407 1211.

,V QRZ WKH WLPH WR Ă€[ \RXU KRPH ORDQ" A lot has happened in the mortgage market over the last couple of months, with several lenders lifting the interest rates across their suite of home loan products. Moving forward, many economists believe rates will rise further this year, with the Reserve Bank of Australia widely expected to lift rates at some point within the next 12 months. With this in mind, it is clear that the bottom of the rate cycle may soon be behind us. As such, now really is the perfect time to review your current ďŹ nancial situation and make sure you are still in the right product for your needs. Whether you’ve been in your mortgage for a few months or a few years, the start of a new year is always the ideal time to compare lenders and investigate what deals are available. With some lenders offering ďŹ xed rates below 4% p.a., you may ďŹ nd that now is the perfect time to ďŹ x part or all of your mortgage.

Is ďŹ xing right for you? A ďŹ xed rate will not only help you to avoid any future rate rises, but it will also provide you with some surety around your regular mortgage repayments. Over the past few months, we’ve seen an increase in the number of people locking into a ďŹ xed rate mortgage. According to the latest data from Mortgage Choice, 19.5% of all home loans written in November were ďŹ xed – up from 17.4% the month prior. By ďŹ xing your home loan, you can lock yourself into a low and stable rate for a certain period of time. This rate will not be affected by any rate changes that happen in the market. Furthermore, you will know exactly how much your repayments will be, meaning you can plan your ďŹ nances ahead of time and maintain your current standard of living.

Expert home loan advice at no cost for you. Of course, before you make any decisions and potentially reďŹ nance into a ďŹ xed rate mortgage, it’s worth speaking with a mortgage professional. Your local Mortgage Choice broker can help you investigate what home loan options are available and help you decide whether or not reďŹ nancing is the right ďŹ nancial move for you.

So why not give Mortgage Choice a call today and see if you are still in the right product for your needs?

+ 0 Club Update

5

by Les Brooks

Last month, 52 members of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club gathered for our first trip of the year to the Beenleigh District. On the way, we picked up our local guide, Mr. James Hesbst who provided an excellent commentary on the history of the entire Beenleigh district. Our first stop was Poppy’s Chocolate where members enjoyed samples of hand made chocolates and bought supplies for a ‘rainy day’. The next stop was at the Logan Village Museum where we enjoyed a wonderful home cooked morning tea, which was followed by a talk on the Logan Village and District’s history. Following this we were able to explore the old beautifully restored buildings at the site. With further commentary by James, we then made our way to the Shearers Arms Tavern at Ormeau for a two course lunch and a couple of very cold drinks, which was enjoyed by everyone. Next stop was a mystery factory outlet to OzKleen, where we were able to buy a selection of their famous cleaning products. Further on down the road was a stop at the Ezy Bake Factory to sample and purchase some of their lovely pastries. After a very busy day, we picked up the much awaited prawn orders from The Tiger Prawn Farm at Jacobs Well which concluded yet another memorable day trip. This month the Club’s ‘Extra Activity’ was held at the Greenbank RSL on Wednesday 8th February for a lunch with 45 members attending. As usual there was a lot of good humour and in particular talk about our June trip to the Outback Spectacular Show. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Thursday of the month, for March and April while renovations are in progress, at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next two meetings are Thursday 16th March (AGM) and Thursday 20th April. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Leonie (President) on 0427 846 057 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. Its March already, and we have been busy since the start of the year, visiting other clubs in the area, playing lawn bowls, and generally having fellowship. We also held a large BBQ at Calamvale, BBQ’s at Office Works, a dinner social night at the Little Beirut Bistro, Indooroopilly, then the End Polio Film Night 15th, with the final social night being the Foundation Dinner on the 23rd. Overall a good month in February for Rotary. We are busy organising BBQ’s for the year ahead and encouraging the younger generation within the community to become involved in the many Youth Programs that Rotary run. Should you know any young person who would benefit from attending one of these programs, please contact Bruce Pocklington by writing to him and sending to PO Box 4110, Forest Lake, 4078. We will also be running a recruitment drive for volunteers, business people, and anyone who believes they can contribute to our community and Rotary. That time could be as a full-time member, a volunteer who can help us run the many items on the program or business owners who want to grow their business by being a member or just make donations to the cause. All are welcome to join us on a Monday night at the Lions Football Club. This is a dinner meeting, so please confirm with Alan your intention to attend. ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N

E

It has been a hot start to our 2017 year, so the Joey Scouts headed to Robelle Lagoon to do some water rescue practice and have some fun in the water. They have also been reviewing their Promise and Law, developing their anti bullying code of conduct, and learning about personal safety before enjoying an outing at the Historic Wolston House at Wacol. This is a great introduction to the Early Australia theme they will be looking at next. We have had a few new people visiting us and they have very quickly made new friends and started enjoying the fun of Joey Scouts. The Cub Scouts started the year doing activities based around symbols of Australia - flags, coat of arms, flora and fauna etc. We also had some games and activities based around our Promise and Law, so that our brand new Cubs could learn about all of the aspects of being a Cub. The extreme heat wave was a great excuse to head to the water for a cool down with the Scouts, and was a good chance for the Cubs and Scouts to spend time together before their combined skills camp at the end of February. The Scout section has had a slow and steady start to the year. After seven weeks away, there was a bit of time needed for practicing knotting & lashing skills, learning how to strain and purify water, how to light fire without matches and, of course, there is always time for games, chilling out with hot chocolate and catching up with friends. Unfortunately, the extreme heat conditions meant a cancellation of one of our camps, so we headed to Robelle Lagoon for a swim with the cubs instead. We had fun getting to know the new cubs, which made it a lot easier at the annual skills camp. Can’t wait for March when we start our fire month. Venturer Scouts have been spending time with Units from Goodna, Camira and Redbank. Along with a trip to Maccas and a water night, they have enjoyed a Valentines night and, of course, The Brisbane Gang Show has kicked off rehearsals again, bringing much excitement with it. There was even opportunity for a canoe weekend at the top end of the Brisbane River! We are planning many more fun nights and activities as we head in to the year.

Family Focus

with Mark Mackay

The Christmas and New Year period is great but for many families the period that follows, February and March, brings us back down to earth really quickly – especially as the credit card statements come in. We all know what it’s like to be enjoying the ‘silly season’ but then wake up with the bill. This stress points to a wider problem in our community – that of debt stress. With the growth of the ‘instant society’ in which we live, we don’t have to wait for many things – the internet gives instant information, social media gives instant connection, entertainment platforms give instant fun. But one of the downsides is that we don’t learn to save money – we expect to buy something instantly. So, we take on credit and debt. The Australian Securities & Investment Commission (ASIC) has reported that the average amount of credit card debt per Australian cardholder is $4,784. Considering many households have multiple credit cards, store cards, etc, this amount can become large for families. Now, let me be clear – there is nothing inherently or implicitly bad about debt. Sometimes debt is necessary. And I’ll leave it to people smarter than me to advise on the types of good and bad debt. My concern is the effect bad debt has on families. Financial stress has become one of the leading factors in family dysfunction. The Bible sheds light on the issue of financial stress, “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them.” (Ecclesiastes 4:10-11) So, we are led to treat money as a tool to achieve ends, not an end in itself – to provide for our needs but not become slaves to our ‘wants’. Here are some practical tips: • A household budget is a good thing! Come along to one of the seminars our Church conducts on household budgeting. • Prioritising your expenditure is a helpful way of meeting needs first, and then ‘wants.’ • If we find ourselves continually out of control when it comes to finances, some professional help might be a good idea. If you find yourself in debt and it has become a source of stress, let me encourage you to not become a slave to that debt. Start with a plan, seek good advice and then set out to put money in its right place. The Lake News - March 2017 - Page 21

There has been much discussion recently on social media and other platforms about crime in the local area, particularly in relation to break-ins. With this in mind I have joined with my colleagues Federal Member for Oxley Milton Dick, State Member for Inala Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Councillor for Forest Lake Ward Charles Strunk to host a Community Safety Forum for the Forest Lake area. The forum will include presentations by QPS on recent crime trends and crime prevention measures as well as an opportunity to identify strategies for how we, as a community, can improve safety and reduce crime. The forum will be held on the evening of Monday 6 March and registration is open now. To register for the forum and for all the details please contact my office on 3737 2110 or via email algester@parliament.qld.gov.au. Of course, there are a number of things we can each do to improve our own home security. The QPS Community Safety and Crime Prevention unit identifies that homes with windows or doors left open or unsecured, curtains closed during the day or mail and newspapers left to accumulate in the mail box are more likely to attract a potential burglar. Steps you can take to improve the safety of your home include: • Fitting external doors and windows with quality locks, and keeping these locked even when at home; • Fitting security screens to doors and windows that meet Australian Standards and are correctly installed to allow exit in case of an emergency; • Installing an intruder alarm to cover external doors, windows and garage; • Trimming trees and shrubs to allow visibility of your property; • Locking away valuable items and keeping your garage door locked; • Installing perimeter security lighting, including sensors; • Getting to know your neighbours and joining a local Neighbourhood Watch group. Forest Lake is a wonderful place to live and by working together we can make it even better. I look forward to catching up with you at the forum on 6 March.

Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program Prep students at Forest Lake State School will this month be among the first in Queensland to benefit from the state Government’s $14 million primary school nurse program. Forest Lake State School is among around 70 schools across the state to receive the service first. Vision screening is vital in early childhood, particularly for conditions such as the most common cause of visual impairment in children, amblyopia (or a ‘lazy eye’), which affects about one in every 50 Australian children. As part of the testing process, where vision or other health problems are detected, children will be referred to appropriate healthcare through Children’s Health Queensland and other agencies. By providing early detection of health problems, we can help ensure our children get the best chance to achieve at school and in their lives. Local Hero’s – Queensland Week Awards Do you know someone who volunteers their time to others? The deadline for our community’s annual local Queensland Week Awards is almost here. During Queensland Week (2-10 June) the South West Progress Association will again be hosting the local Queensland Day Awards. It is a perfect opportunity to honour those unsung local heroes who contribute their time to volunteer for local community groups, organisations and schools. This is the 10th year of this event, and the quality and quantity of the nominations is expected to grow even further than last year. If there is someone you wish to nominate please contact the SWPA via email southwestprogressassoc@gmail.com or my office on 3737 2100 for a nomination form, as nominations close on 16 May 2017.

In an age where we are more connected than ever before, it’s never been more important that all homes and businesses have access to reliable and high quality internet. Whether it be the thousands of business owners who work from home, young students doing homework on their iPads, or simply watching Netflix after a long day at work. It’s vital that we have the infrastructure needed to take us into the 21st century. Unfortunately, I’m hearing on a daily basis about the ongoing problems with the NBN rollout right across our region. From drop outs and slow connection speeds, all the way through to delayed connection times and a lack of information as to when services will become available. Whilst some areas are now benefitting from the NBN being made available, too often I’m seeing cases of community expectations not being met. Just last week, I visited a resident who told me how the NBN cables run directly behind his back fence but due to the direction his house faces he is not able to be connected and must rely on a wireless connection. He told me about his frustration that a connection to his property had been continuously delayed and the difficulties that his two primary school aged children faced when using the internet for their schoolwork. All the while properties nearby were connected months ago. This is a classic example of the digital divide occurring throughout our region and the ongoing delays to homes and businesses being given access to high quality broadband. For too long we’ve heard the promise that all homes and businesses would be connected by now. Ensuring the NBN is rolled out on time and on budget remains a key priority for me and I’ll continue fighting to see this happen as quickly as possible. Please email me at Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov.au if you would like to share your NBN experience. I’m happy to hear positive stories or any troubles you may have had.

Forest Lake Area F

Garden Group

by John Prout The beginning of autumn can still be quite hot if the heat continues from the last month of summer but get ready for a busy few weeks once the weather cools down. Not only will it be more pleasant to work outside then but it will be time to plant a wide variety of cool-season vegetables, annual flowers and spring-flowering bulbs. Talking about bulbs, it’s time to plan which bulbs we’ll be planting for summer. If ordering from a catalogue or from the net, ensure the bulbs you order are suitable for our climate. Place the bulbs, clearly marked, in the crisper of the fridge until around Easter. March, the month named after Mars, the Roman God of War, is an excellent month to wage war on your garden. Be it ripping out the weeds, mulching up a storm or popping in a plethora of plants, March is the ultimate time to launch a full scale (but well planned) attack on your garden! So, all you weekend warriors... March into action! Insect pests are on the march in March. They’ve had ample time to build up numbers through the hot weather and there’s a lot of growth around for them to get stuck into. Caterpillars grow ever bigger as they feast on your favourite plants. Buy one of the eco-friendly products to control caterpillars, and also treat smaller sap suckers like aphids and thrips. Tidying and dead-heading will be the main pruning jobs for this month. Prune off sun-damaged sections on hedges and feed to encourage as much new growth as possible before winter. Our first bus trip for the year will be a Gardeners Delight and Plant Lovers trip. First stop will be to Carol and John Kerkin’s Garden of Eden. This 3.2 ha property is a haven of bird life with flowers and plants arranged in a multitude of different ‘rooms’. Lunch will be at the Beenleigh RSL, followed by a visit to Nielsen’s Native Nursery where there is a large range of native plants. Cost will be $40 for members and $45 for guests and lunch is included in the trip cost. For further information and a flyer contact either Heather (phone 3879 2129) or Jill (phone 3372 6800). Life is a garden for everyone; garden novices, green thumbs, and everyone in between. What better way to relax and enjoy Mother Nature as well as reap the rewards with the wonderful colours that she produces. Carol Kerkin will be our guest speaker at the March meeting discussing salvias. Come along and join us for a friendly chat and I hope to share a cuppa with you.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

Next meeting Tuesday, 7 March at 9.30 for a 10am start. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

Wasps Update K

Forest Lake Friendship Group

Forest Lake Wasps are all ready to go for their most exciting season yet! We are the only club in the Southern suburbs to R UGBY offer the all-new, fast-paced Viva7s. Run by the Qld Reds. It is a great way for the whole family to get into rugby. It’s for all ages and is touch, not tackle, so it’s safe for everyone. There’s music to get you in the mood and a couple of families can join together to make a team. We have three Come ‘n Try sessions for Viva 7s on our normal training nights 4.30-5.30pm, on Thursday March 2 and March 9. The ARU has mandated that all registrations for U5-U9 for the current season be made online only. For the link, visit www.forestlakewasps.com.au. This link will take you straight to the online form. We have sibling discounts that are automatically calculated at registration. We also have payment plans available and accept the Getting Started vouchers, so come down to the club on training nights, Thursdays, 4.30-5-30pm to find out how we can help your child get into rugby. We are especially on the lookout for U6 & U9 to join our encouraging environment. Our successful Little Stingers program will run again this season from Term 2 but you can sign up now. Our cute three and four year olds get their own jersey and ball and get to train the same night as the bigger kids. They love being part of it and often sleep with their boots and socks on! Don’t forget the all new Girls 7s Competition on Sundays. The BJRU has established this so girls who wish to follow in the footsteps of our successful Aussie women from the Olympics have a pathway to do so. You can choose touch or tackle from U12 and up. You can sign on and train with us, compete on Sundays at a central location and you are guaranteed a game! Qld Reds sponsor, St George, have come to the party in a big way with a registration offer. Participating accounts can attract a $60 rebate of your registration fees. Visit our website or Facebook (The WASPs: Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club) for details. We are still on the lookout for volunteers. If you would like to help out, please come along to one of our training nights. We would love to have you as part of our team! All enquiries about the current season can be made by sending an email to president@forestlakewasps.com.au.

Snake bite and your pet

Snake bites are a relatively common occurrence in regional areas of Australia. Around Forest Lake, Brown and Red Belly Black snake envenomation occurs in summer when snakes are active. There are a number of signs which are typical of venomous snake bites and, if observed, should be followed by prompt attention. In the vast majority of snake bites, evidence of a bite wound is absent. Clinical signs observed are largely dependent on the species of snake as well as the dose and potency of venom delivered in the bite. Similarly, the clinical course of signs is also variable. Dogs often show initial signs of transient collapse, salivation and vomiting that can be missed by owners. These signs may be followed by a seemingly spontaneous recovery. However, the presence these signs almost invariably mean is that the patient has received a lethal dose of venom, with patients usually deteriorating with weakness, ataxia and urinating blood within hours. In contrast, cats rarely display any initial signs, with the earliest signs usually being weakness and ataxia. Your pet should be checked if you: • observe a snake attack incident; • find a dead snake in the yard – please bring in dead snakes for identification; • observe collapse, weakness, ataxia and urinating blood. Snake bites are largely diagnosed on suspicion given the presence of signs suggestive of a bite. Blood samples to assess clotting times and kidney function and urine tests are also helpful in determining if a bite is likely, as well as the severity of the bite, but are not specific for snake bites. Venom detection kits are available to identify the correct venom. Treatment of snake bites revolves around prompt administration of antivenin and supportive care. Intravenous fluids, antihistamines, adrenaline and respiratory support with oxygen, may all be necessary if supportive therapy is to be successful. Hospitalisation for a minimum of 24 hours is usually necessary to ensure adequate monitoring and treatment. Snake bites should always be given a guarded prognosis as many complications can occur, but generally, treatment outcome is significantly improved if the animal is hospitalised and antivenin is administered promptly.
