Monthly Update
by Les Brooks
Last month, members of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club ventured out for a day trip to Beenleigh Rum Distillery. Our first stop was our local lake in Forest Lake for our usual morning tea which was provided by a couple of our members. With morning tea over we made our way to the Logan Motorway for our trip to Beenleigh; on the way we were able to look at the damage that Cyclone Debbie caused in the area. On arrival at The Beenleigh Rum Distillery we were welcomed and given a history on the area and how the Distillery was started and why it ended up on its present position on the banks of the Albert River. Then it was time for our short tour of the Distillery as the lower level went under in the flood and we were unable to get into that area. With tour completed, we sat around for our rum tasting and it was very interesting to hear some of the remarks on the different rums we tried. Tasting over we made our way up the street to the Beenleigh Tavern for a delicious two course lunch and some time to think of all the damage and heartache of the after effects of Cyclone Debbie. The Club’s ‘Extra Activity’ was a great breakfast on the 12th April at the Coffee Club, where there was the usual laughter and talk about our recent very interesting trip to the Beenleigh Rum Distillery. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next two meetings are Friday 19th May and Friday 16th June. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Leonie (President) on 0427 846 057 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. New members are always welcome.

with Susannah Friis Someone commented to me a few weeks ago that they couldn’t imagine me saying anything wrong or out of place. After I picked myself up off the floor and stopped laughing, I assured them that I most certainly do...and often! I quite frequently wish I had an internal seven second delay like they do for radio stations. The most recent example of this was at our daughter’s parent/teacher interview night. Here’s a brief transcript: Me to teacher I’d never met before: Hi Jennifer, I’m Susannah. Her: Hi Susannah, please, call me Jenny. Me: I’m good thanks! Her: ....right, well, take a seat. *Cue facepalm And there was another embarrassing moment with a different teacher but I’m not sharing that one with you as well! And, of course, there are times I say things that are wrong and potentially hurtful, instead of things that just make me look silly. The truth is, we all say things at the wrong times, in the wrong way, and often at the completely wrong time. And even though some people think that because I can string two sentences together in written form, the fact is that no-one is above saying the wrong thing. Maybe it’s age but I have less of an issue now with the fact that I say the wrong thing than when I was younger. When I was younger, I was mortified. Now, I either laugh or apologise (to be honest, it’s usually both!). When we understand, and are comfortable with, the fact that we can have things come out of their mouths that we didn’t intend, we are much more forgiving when others do it too. If it’s in person, we can show by our tone and body language that there was no malicious intent and we can also forgive and smooth over for others when they say something without thinking too. Of course, it’s hard to convey tone and feeling using a keyboard and an internet connection, which, unfortunately, is where many, many silly, hurtful, mean, thoughtless things can be, and are, said. There are studies conducted on the rise of ‘keyboard warriors’ who hide behind the supposed anonymity of the internet and say whatever they feel like at any given time. While, as my example demonstrates, none of us are immune from saying the wrong thing, the problem with ‘saying’ it online is its permanency and the fact that it reaches a much larger audience than we ever have in real life. The other disturbing thing is that unlike when words sometimes rush unbidden from our lips, there is more time to think when typing and before hitting that ‘send’ button. And it’s the lack of thought that is the problem. We need to be even more careful with our words online, in forums and on facebook. Face to face connection simply cannot be replaced, after all, it is the original mode of communication and, in my opinion, really is the best. Be kind, be gentle, be understanding with your words, both online and in person. Oh, and try not to answer questions no-one has asked when meeting new teachers!

Heathwood Smiles celebrates one year of serving our local community Local business owner Anil Kamath and staff were delighted to celebrate with cake and balloons, Heathwood Smiles’ one year birthday last month. Having seen over 700 patients in the last 12 months, and with the addition of another dentist, Dr Felix, who has a keen interest in orthodontics, the surgery has gone from strength to strength, based on excellent patient care and service. “The most rewarding part of my job is meeting patients who are originally fearful or apprehensive about coming to the dentist,” said Dr Thia. “After seeing them a few times or walking through treatment with them, they are at ease and comfortable by the end of the appointment.” Located just minutes from Forest Lake in the 7 Eleven retail centre on the corner of Stapylton Road and Blunder Road, Heathwood, Heathwood Smiles prides itself on providing quality treatment, top of the range equipment, including an in-house OPG machine, digital xrays and intra-oral cameras. Also offering a ‘tooth fairy’ service, staff from Heathwood Smiles have made over 10 visits to local early education centres as well as participating in various markets and events in Forest Lake. There are a range of treatments available at Heathwood Smiles including: emergencies; extractions; rootcanal treatments; paediatric, cosmetic and prosthetic (dentures) dentistry; crowns and bridges; and whitening. The friendly team at Heathwood Smiles are looking forward to continuing the relationships with their clients as well as building new relationships with local residents. Forest Lake residents will again dig deep for the local area by donating to the Red Shield Appeal this month from 22-28 May when volunteers conduct their doorknock collection. The Red Shield Appeal has been an Australian institution since 1965 and has raised millions of dollars to help the disadvantaged and those in need in communities all over the nation. Locally, new Salvation Army Officers, Anthony and Vanessa Hunt, are hoping that over $5000 can be raised to support work in the Forest Lake area. “The money raised during the appeal funds our work supporting struggling families and members of our community as well as our Youth Services throughout the region,â€? said Vanessa. “Some of the other services that The Salvation Army provides with these funds include drug and alcohol rehabilitation, homelessness support, domestic violence crisis support and financial counselling.â€? Relocating from Sydney in January with their two children, Vanessa and Anthony, are keen to become part of the Forest Lake community and support local residents. “We’ve been in Forest Lake a short time but we have come to love it already. It’s a beautiful place and a genuine community. We are passionate about seeing families flourish and believe that when families are healthy and happy, it has a flow on effect to the wider community. “We want to see people reach their potential and be contributing to the ongoing health of this community. As a family, we just want to become part of the fabric of Forest Lake by just living our everyday lives in this area and doing life with those in it.â€? If you’d like to volunteer to collect for the Salvos this Red Shield Appeal, either by doorknocking or by manning static points at the shopping centre, call 3714 0777 or send an email to fran.probets@aue.salvationarmy.org.

For local resident, 17 year old Bailee Johnston, heading overseas in July to compete with the Australian Indoor Netball team in the World Indoor Netball Association Junior World Series will be the highlight of her time spent playing netball. The Forest Lake High School year 12 student has been playing netball since she was seven and couldn’t be prouder to represent Australia for the first time. After an extensive selection process with players having to firstly represent their club at zone level, then their state at National level before being considered to represent Australia, Bailee will make the journey with her team mates in the 17 & Under Mixed division to South Africa. Players must raise and pay for their own fares and expenses, totalling close to $4500. Local real estate agency, @ap-realty, have donated $500 towards Bailee’s costs and encourage other local businesses to consider contributing as well. “Our agency was delighted to help out by donating towards the cost of getting these young talented people across to South Africa to compete in the WINA Junior World Series,” said @ ap-realty Principal, Chris Hayter. “What an opportunity for them! Unfortunately it is a costly exercise and we would hate to see someone miss out on participating because they couldn’t afford to go.” If you or your business would like to sponsor Bailee, contact Wendy Pope by phoning 02 8736 1225 or send an email to admin@indoorsportsnsw.org.au. We wish Bailee and the teams all the best of luck and look forward to hearing of their great success when they return to Australia ~ Editor.

Lakers Dragon Boat Club off to State Championships
by Emma Woodward
After a long, intense season of training and racing, Lakers Dragon Boat Club attended their first ever Queensland State Championship regatta at Lake Kawana, Sunshine Coast. Known as ‘States’, the regatta was held on the 25-26 March with clubs from all over Queensland contesting the title. Our racing season started off in July last year, at the Tin Can Bay regatta. Nine regattas and countless hours of training later, Lakers went into the States with high hopes. The team came so close in many of the lead up events and we were due for a win. We were entered in four separate events, which is amazing with our small pool of paddlers. Many of those paddled in more than one event and ended up on the water 6-8 times each day. Due to our wide range of ages in the team, many paddlers were competing in categories two or three age groups below their own. Saturday began with the 2km event, designed to blow out the cobwebs and get the teams focussed on the 500m racing for the rest of the day. The Premier Women’s team, Premier Mixed team and the Senior A Open team vied for honours over 500m with all teams doing the Club proud in their various divisions and age groups. We are currently recruiting for the 2017-2018 regatta season and always need more paddlers. No experience is necessary as we will train you with paddles and PFD’s available to use. Just wear light clothes that can get wet and bring plenty of drinking water, a towel and sunscreen. We train on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 6.30am during summer and spring, start time is subject to change during the cooler months. Drop by and speak to us at the Lake - ready to get on the boat preferably! For more information, visit www.lakersdragonboatclub.org.

Forest Lake Lions Club update by Michael Janz For more than 20 years you’ve probably seen the Forest Lake Lions conducting barbecues and running stalls at a range of local events like the Easter Carnival, ANZAC Day and Carols by Candlelight. People also identify Lions with the sales of Christmas cakes and puddings. The Lions are much more than that! Every year this group of service-minded men and women work actively towards improving our Forest Lake Community. We are young people, families and Baby Boomers alike. To become a Lion is to become an active volunteer, a member of a respected international organisation, a leader in your community and a friend to people in need. You can develop new friendships, learn new skills and make a positive contribution to our community. Every year the Forest Lake Lions contribute tens of thousands of both dollars Lions President Jonathan Slack presents a donation to mum Sarah and baby Riley and volunteer time to help make a difference. with Lion Sandra Fox. Over the past year, we have actively supported many people in our community who suffer disadvantage and hardship by providing dollars and time. Such an example is mum Sarah and baby Riley (pictured) who need to attend hospital on a very regular basis to help manage a serious medical condition. The Forest Lake Lions keenly provide leadership to help develop our youth through such projects as our sponsorship of the St John’s Leos. With the enthusiastic support of adviser, Lion April Lindell, Leos encourages young men and women to serve others in their community and around the world. Annually we conduct the Youth of the Year project to encourage, foster and develop leadership qualities in young Australians. This year we were delighted to congratulate Olivia Hutley (pictured) from St Johns College Forest Lake who won her way to the Toowoomba Zone Final. The Club has been very fortunate in obtaining a funding grant from the Heritage Bank for new dress uniforms and jackets. We have not had new uniforms in a long time as we put all funds we raise back into the community therefore it would have been up to the club members to individually fund the new uniforms. Fortunately, Heritage came to our rescue - thank you Hertiage Bank Forest Lake! In coming editions, we’ll share how we support projects such as medical research and keeping Forest Lake clean. If you would like find out about becoming a Forest Lake Lion, call Stuart Grierson on 0418 735 190. To let us know of any local needs that we could support, send us a message via Winner of the District Lions Lion Stuart modelling the new shirt. our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/LionsClubForestLake. Forest Lake Magpies JRLFC Update by Debra Smith It’s wonderful to see so many youngsters coming to training with passion and determination. All teams have been training hard since the start of the season - improving ball handling skills and learning to work as a team. This year we are pleased to announce that this is the first time we have had an Under 11 team in the Premier division. Well done to you all and best of luck for the season. Our Under 10’s (pictured) had the opportunity to participate in the Bronco’s March Past at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday 6 April prior to the match against the Roosters. All the boys were extremely excited and enjoyed the whole experience. Recently the club has offered sponsorship to three new players. Sponsorship covers registration, insurance premiums and uniform costs for the player. We are always looking at sponsoring more players with outstanding talent. Children from local primary and secondary schools from Under 10 through to Under 16 are invited to try out. Training is held on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Warren Ritchie Sports complex at 1449 Boundary Road, Ellen Grove. Any queries about sponsorship should be directed to President, Farren Dicker, on 0419 131 896. We value the contributions made to support and fund projects for our club. We’d like to extend our thanks to our Patron, Milton Dick MP, for his ongoing support of the club. Thanks also to 5 Star All Sports Browns Plains and Zaraffas Richlands/ Heathwood for your continued sponsorship. We would love to hear from other businesses who would like to be a club sponsor. Please contact Farren on the above mobile or send an email to admin@forestlakejrlfc.com.au for more information on sponsorship packages available. With respect, we thank and remember the commitment and sacrifice of all armed forces personnel, past and present, on ANZAC Day and their continued service to our country. For the army of mums who feed, care for and move our little troops around, we thank you too for your tireless efforts. Happy Mother’s Day to you all on Sunday, 14 May. FROM THE DESK OF
Councillor Charles Strunk Forest Lake Ward Councillor
ANZAC Day is marked by a range of ceremonies taking place across Australia and within my ward. This annual tradition brings people from various nationalities together to remember and pay tribute to service men and women both past and present who have fought in all wars. Recently, I sat down with Forest Lake residents who told me how much they enjoy living in Forest Lake and the important role that this area played during WWII as an encampment by soldiers from the Allied Forces. I left the catch-up feeling proud of our hero’s sacrifices and thankful to live in a free society, that can be enjoyed by all. On ANZAC Day, I was pleased to accept an invitation to say a few words at my first Forest Lake ANZAC ceremony and lay a wreath on behalf of the Forest Lake Ward residents at the memorial in the Amphitheatre. I congratulate the Forest Lake RSL sub-branch for once again hosting another memorable ceremony. Thank you to all involved, those who marched with pride and marked this special occasion at their local clubs or schools. I’m always appreciative of the good work our residents and community groups are doing in and around the Ward. It was great to have a large turnout for our special litter pickup on the morning of the 23 April prior to the ANZAC Day ceremony. The team had a productive time using the litter tools supplied by Brisbane City Council Litter Prevention team. I was delighted to have our local area looking great for the ANZAC march. This month, I can announce another great local initiative. Our very own Gavin Rook has founded the first local Forest Lake Table Tennis Association. This team meets weekly on Tuesday and Thursdays between 7.30pm and 9.30pm at the Lighthouse Event Centre at 65 Woogaroo St, Forest Lake, with childrens’ table tennis activities commencing soon. Special thank you to the Forest Lake Community Heritage Bank Branch for supporting this wonderful new sporting organisation. For information on membership please contact Gavin directly on 0404 792 385 or my Forest Lake Ward office on 3407 1211.
Family Focus
with Mark Mackay
If it’s May, it means our family is in the middle of birthday celebrations. Most of our family’s birthday’s are clumped around the end of April through to the middle of June so there’s a lot of happiness and fun...and food! It’s good to celebrate together – we need times of fun. My wife, Catherine, is great at making a fuss at birthdays and other celebrations. She loves to make the person being honoured feel special. Many households have routines that are so ‘wall-to-wall’ that there’s hardly any time left to celebrate things but we need these high moments to stop and enjoy the moment. The monotony needs to be punctuated. It’s not just birthdays but anniversaries, graduations, finishing a semester at school, finishing work before a holiday. These are all moments of celebration when we should stop and have some fun together. In most other societies, ‘feasting’ is a big part of their culture. Feasts come at harvest time, at weddings, at special birthdays, etc, because they know the importance to the family unit and wider community to celebrate. Some time ago, a friend of mine married a lady from India and they went to India for the wedding. Whereas in Australia, the wedding will last for an afternoon and then into the night for the reception, the wedding festivities in India lasted for days! It was a celebration of family, of love, of the couple and of the community. We can learn a lot from other cultures about how to feast and celebrate well. God knows we need moments of celebration in the relentless ebb and flow of life. He knows we need to take a break and celebrate (and sometimes mourn) together. That’s why He instituted feasts for the ancient Israelites to observe and I think it’s part of the reason why Christ’s first miracle took place at a wedding feast. It is in punctuating the monotony that God also knows we may stop long enough to consider some of the deeper, more meaningful questions of life. Let’s not let the busyness of life crowd out moments of celebration. Celebrate one another and the blessings in your life and family. These celebration moments become memories which we carry for the rest of our lives and serve as good markers when times get tougher. Page 16 - May 2017 - The Lake News

Forest Lake residents once again dug deep and gave generously when the call went out from a nearby organisation in their quest to help Lismore residents severely effected in the recent floods. Goodna Street Life founder and CEO, Helen Youngberry said the response was overwhelming. “KS Easter offered the truck to transport the goods and Forest Lake residents gave half of the items we filled the truck with,â€? she said. “It was great to help out the flood victims in Lismore as so many of the charities in the town were effected too, so they weren’t in a position to help anyone either. “I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated. Your generosity was really appreciated by those doing it tough right now after the floods.â€? Help mothers-in-need this Mother’s Day Everyone appreciates being a parent can be difficult; the neverending laundry, picky eaters and sibling in-fighting to name a few. But for families in crisis or mothers in shelters who are escaping domestic violence, their challenges are much more serious. One of the most significant challenges for these mothers can be the ability to provide basic healthcare items for their babies and children such as nappies. At an average of 45 cents each and with newborns using up to 3000 nappies in their first year, nappies are one of the largest ongoing costs of raising a young family. From May 5-19 inclusive, The Nappy Collective is calling on families across Australia to address this rising and significant need through the donation of their leftover nappies, which will provide vital material aid to mums in need, and help share the joy and love of Mother’s Day. Forest Lake residents can drop off their left-over nappies or new packets to LJHooker located on Forest Lake Boulevard. The May collective spans 50 cities and towns across Australia, where over 340 workplaces will collect hundreds of thousands of left-over, unused, disposable nappies (largely destined for landfill). The Nappy Collective will then sort and redistribute the collected nappies to over 180 organisations around Australia that support mothers fleeing family violence, asylum seekers, refugees and families struggling with homelessness, mental illness, drug abuse, and extreme financial hardship. Sandra Jacobs, Founder said, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity and support of the community, and to date have collected over 1.75 million nappies, which have greatly benefitted tens of thousands of babies around Australia. However, demand continues to increase with shelters and welfare agencies struggling to provide nappies for their clients with their limited funds. This Mother’s Day, we urge all our donors and the community to contribute nappies to our campaign and help struggling mums around the country. “The stories from our beneficiaries of the sheer relief and gratitude of the mums when they receive their nappies is what drives the ongoing commitment of The Nappy Collective. A handful of nappies may not mean much to you or me but they make a huge impact on a mum in crisis and, importantly, show her the community truly cares.” For more information, visit www.thenappycollective.com.

Excessive thirst generally leads to increased urination and in our feline friends this can be symptomatic of some serious diseases including, kidney failure, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism and liver disease just to name a few. Cats are particularly prone to kidney damage and it has a variety of causes. Infections, cancers, exposure to toxins, and malfunction of the immune system may all be responsible for starting a slow process of damage, leading eventually to loss of function and kidney failure. Kidney disease (or chronic renal failure) is the most common medical disease affecting cats. It is mostly seen in older cats with only about 10% of diagnoses in cats less than three years of age. The kidneys play a very vital role in removing waste products from the blood stream, retaining essential nutrients such as potassium, maintaining hydration and producing urine. Chronic renal failure is a condition where, over time, the function of the kidneys deteriorates, resulting in the inability to remove the body’s waste matter and purify the blood. The kidneys have a large amount of capacity to perform their various functions, so at least 70% of the kidneys need to be affected before any signs of disease are seen. In most cases, this means that the damage has been occurring over a number of months or even years before the failure of the kidneys is evident. Signs of kidney failure are weight loss, high blood pressure, poor coat quality, increased urination, inappropriate urination, incontinence, excessive drinking and vomiting. Renal failure is usually diagnosed by a urine test and a blood test that looks at various markers of kidney function. These tests help to determine the extent of the disease allowing your vet to proceed with the best course of treatment. The risks associated with chronic renal failure can be minimised by maintaining good hydration and a high quality diet. There are many good filtering and flowing water bowls available that can help encourage good hydration. Once kidney disease is diagnosed, there are many specific diets available which can help support the kidney to maintain good function. High blood pressure should be medicated and monitored to avoid complications. The key is early diagnosis. Annual blood tests are recommended so any irregularities can be detected early.

As we approach Mother’s Day, I suppose all children, regardless of their age, are planning where to take Mum, Nana or Grandma to lunch for her special day of the year. Select somewhere nice as all Mums deserve the best treatment. This day is our opportunity to express our gratitude to our Mums. Children love to show the cards they have made at school which becomes a treasured keepsake for Mum. The earliest history of Mother’s Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honour Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. One of the popular flowers to give Mum is the chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum grandiflorum). Most chrysanthemums are upright plants with lobed leaves that can be aromatic. The many showy flower heads, carried at the tips of strong stems, begin to bloom as the days shorten. Maybe this flower is sort after on Mother’s Day as the spelling ends with ‘mum’. Last month A Garden A-Fair was held in the auditorium at Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. This is an inter-club challenge between the 40 garden clubs in south-east Queensland and organised by the Queensland Council of Garden Clubs. What can I say about our entries? The floral art ladies did a magnificent job by benching fifteen exhibits. Angela Naumann (pictured) was awarded Best Exhibit of the show and the Club Gaining Most Points in Floral Art was won by our club. The club display competition was also won by Forest Lake Area Garden Group. Several members also won sections in the flowers and foliage section and I won the Best Home Grown Produce with my 14kg watermelon. Our most successful show to date and my sincere thanks to all those members who contributed. The full list of results will be in this month’s Good Dirt. Our next bus trip is on Thursday 18 May when we will visit Brindabella Country Rose Garden. After viewing this English style rose garden it will be on to the Chocolate Cottage for lunch. On the return journey we’ll stop at Spring Buff Railway Station. Its significance stems from 150 years of railway history and the beautiful landscape gardens. Cost for members is $45, and $50 for guests with lunch included. This month’s guest speaker will be Shirley Dance from the Queensland Rose Society naturally talking on roses and on 6 June we’ll have Ian Wintle discussing Bold and Beautiful Plants. Visitors most welcome.
We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!
Next meeting Tuesday, 6 June at 9.30 for a 10am start. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.
RSPCA’s domestic violence service under pressure as numbers double RSPCA Queensland’s Pets In Crisis program is struggling as the numbers of domestic violence victims using the service rose dramatically during the last year. Back in 2005, RSPCA Queensland agreed to help DVConnect deal with women and children who felt trapped in violent domestic situations because of concerns for their pets. “Women often delay leaving a violent relationship because they’re worried about what will happen to their pets,” said Di Mangan Manager of DVConnect. “Unfortunately refuges are not equipped to take animals and women have been have been reluctant to leave if they cannot find or afford emergency pet care.” The Pets in Crisis domestic violence program solved this problem by providing temporary care for the pets of women and children during their stay in domestic violence refuges. The number of pets being cared for by the RSPCA has been gradually increasing every year, but last year the numbers doubled. “In 2015, we cared for 126 animals but last year that number jumped to 236. We’re struggling to cope,” said Foster Care Coordinator Julie Herbert. “However it remains our long term commitment to help address the disturbing links between animal abuse, child abuse and domestic violence.” Last year Pets in Crisis provided temporary accommodation for 147 dogs, 68 cats, nine kittens, four birds, four guinea pigs, three reptiles and one horse. In total, the animals spent 7356 days in care and cost the RSPCA over $230,000. Pets in Crisis is a critical program that delivers many community benefits. On the one hand, it provides women with a release from their ‘hostage’ situations and enables families to seek refuge and on the other, pets are protected from violence or abandonment and are able to be reunited with their families when they are in a safe environment. At the time of writing, the Federal Budget is only a few weeks away. As is frequently the case, it is quite likely that there will be the annual tweaking of superannuation rules with one of the issues included in the media of late being young people’s access to superannuation for the purchase of a home. This is a complex issue and one can appreciate the arguments from both sides. On the one hand, for younger people the thought of how much superannuation they might have in 35 or 40 years time rarely enters into their economic equation of today. Purchase of a house is typically a more immediate goal, and saving enough money for a deposit is the target. If the superannuation money is theirs, notwithstanding normal access only in the long term, is it not fair that they can use their money now to help fund what is typically their major investment? In the other corner is the argument that superannuation is intended to be a long term investment, where the impact of compound interest over perhaps 40 years can help reduce the burden on the public purse for retirement incomes in the future. The other compelling concern is will this not simply increase the cost of housing based on the simple laws of supply and demand, and thereby just make the problem that is trying to be solved even worse? History is chequered with ideas that sounded good at the time but ended up creating all sorts of additional problems down the track. The story of the cane toad has nothing to do with fiscal planning or public finance, but I think you know what I am getting at. I often envisage the economy being a machine controlled with numerous levers; pull one down to have a desired effect and something else unexpected happens which then requires adjustment of another lever...and so it continues. Perfect equilibrium, fairness and balance may be the aspiration of our politicians but it is typically an elusive goal. Talking of superannuation there are a number of changes coming into effect from 1 July 2017 following legislative changes last November. A little research on the internet might be worthwhile to see if you are affected.

MTR have proven that a kiosk can be something truly extraordinary.... “The most amazing attribute that stood out for me with their kiosk was that MTR was breaking the customer service mould - MTR had told consumers how they wanted to engage before the consumer even knew it them self – Just pure innovation!” (Rod Facey REIQ Finance and Corporate Services Manager) The inception of a kiosk to represent the company was the brainchild of Marilyn Thurtell, whose vision has propelled MTR into the future of the Real Estate industry. In the first of its kind initiative, moving the business from a traditional office to a kiosk situated at the heart of a busy shopping centre in November 2014, thrust the company into the forefront of real estate in Forest Lake, and brought the business face-to-face with the public. Seeing the community up close and personal in the Forest Lake Shopping Centre has been a giant leap into developing relationships within the Centre and the greater community. At the kiosk, MTR staff see clients in a completely different setting. The team hears about their weekends, or things that are affecting their everyday life. The MTR team are readily available to offer any advice or information people may need in regards to buying or selling property, and in many cases, just to listen. Featuring a state-of-the-art interface between clients and MTR services, the kiosk positioned at the heart of the Forest Lake Shopping Centre, is situated in a prime, high traffic flow area with hundreds of passers-by and numerous touch-points daily. The kiosk has a high visual appeal to passers-by and utilises modern technology for ease of information dissemination. MTR is always a just a phone call away. The MTR kiosk’s latest technological offering is the new red phone on the counter you can simply pick up the handset to be connected to one of the MTR Team OR Dial 07 3271 2595 and your call will be answered 24/7. When Rod Facey, REIQ Finance and Corporate Services Manager visited the kiosk he noted “I discovered that some of the key attributes of a successful small business such as being future focussed, curious, tech-savvy and action oriented were all present in the MTR business model. Marilyn and her team deliver this in spades and achieve small business outcomes and personalised service in a high profile and highly visible environment, and sure, whilst kiosks have been around since the dawn of time, the concept of delivering professional support for the biggest asset in anyone’s life through this business model is truly unique.”

For those on low incomes, meeting the cost of daily needs like electricity and transport can be a real struggle. That’s why I’m so pleased to report that as part of the Fairer Fares package, the Queensland Government has expanded public transport concession rates to include dedicated job seekers. From now on, job seekers on Newstart or Youth Allowance will be eligible for 50% discount on public transport fares. This concession on Translink buses, trains, and ferries will connect job seekers with employment opportunities and interviews. The Queensland Government has also introduced reforms to electricity rebates, which benefit families with a Commonwealth Health Care Card, and low-income households experiencing short-term financial difficulty. Low income families in our community can now save $330 a year on their energy bills, hopefully alleviating a great deal of financial stress. This is an important addition to concessions already available to those who hold Pensioner Concession Cards, Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Cards, and Queensland Seniors Cards. The Palascczuk Government has also reformed the vital Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme to help low-income households experiencing short-term financial difficulty to get back on their feet. I’m proud to be part of a government that is committed to investing $170 million to expand the current electricity rebate. I know from my many conversations with people in the community that support such as this makes a real difference in the daily lives of families with limited income. If you’d like more information on the new public transport concession, visit www.translink.com.au/ticketsand-fares/concessions/job-seekers and for information on electricity rebates, visit www.qld.gov.au/community/cost-ofliving-support/concessions/. Despite the school holiday break, Richlands-Forest Lake Scouts still managed to keep busy. Scouting ideals and values are encouraged all of the time, not just at Scout meetings, so while our youth program does not run over the holidays, there are still plenty of community events and service opportunities for us to be involved in. Thanks to the efforts of our parent group, we had a busy Sunday at Bunnings Oxley running a sausage sizzle fundraiser. These funds will help us purchase resources for our youth program and help pay for ongoing training for our Leaders. The lovely ladies of our committee were also happy to attend the Women in the Community High Tea at Blue Fin Inala. We would like to take the opportunity to thank the hardworking members of Lions Forest Lake for organising this event and Cr Charles Strunk for his support in helping to make it happen. This was a fantastic opportunity to meet and talk to some of the amazing women who work and volunteer in our community groups and schools. We are so blessed to have so many awe inspiring women in our community. We also spent a day running First Aid for the Inala Youth Service at their Youth Week event at DJ Sherrington Park. What a fantastic day it was, and how great it was to see so many young people out and being active, getting together and having fun. Easter Saturday saw us back at Bunnings Oxley. This time we were there to help the Bunnings team hand out hot cross buns to their customers and spread a bit of good will. Bunnings Oxley is one of the many businesses in our community who focus on giving back, and Richlands-Forest Lake Scouts are proud to help them where we can. April also means ANZAC Day, and involvement in ANZAC Day marches and services is an important event on our Group calendar. Honouring those who have sacrificed so that we can enjoy the freedoms and lifestyle that we have today, and teaching our youth members about service and respect. Lest we forget. Service to the community is a large part of Scouting. Of course, Scouting is not all about hard work and service, and once the youth members returned from school holiday break it was back in to the fun, games and friendship, with lots more exciting and adventurous activities planned for the coming term, including hiking, camping, day trips and much more. Why not come along and see if there is something here for you? All of our sections meet Tuesday afternoon/evening. Contact Rosella on 0402 308 182 for more information on how you and your family can be involved.

Easter Carnival another huge success On Sunday 4 April, crowds of local families flocked to the Lake to enjoy the fun and frivolity of Forest Lake’s Annual Easter Carnival. This year the Carnival was bigger and better than ever with over 600 people coming along to join in all fun and free activities including the egg hunt, face painting, popcorn and snow cones, a jumping castle, colouring in competitions, lolly scrambles and photos with the Easter Bunny. The Forest Lake Lions Club also attended and supported the event with a sausage sizzle and drinks. One happy carnival goer said, “The Eggstravaganza was incredible! My children loved everything about it. Can’t wait for next year. We will be back.” The Easter Carnival was proudly supported by MTR Property Group, Forest Lake Lions Club and Heritage Bank. Hopping into the Easter Carnival was Milton Dick MP who said, “Well done to Marilyn and her team for another great local event alongside The Lions Club.” When Marilyn Thurtell was asked about how the event began she said, “I started this event three years ago so that I could give back to the community that has supported me over the past 15 years. “The Easter Carnival is just one part of my commitment to the Forest Lake Community, but it is the event I am most proud of. “I would like to thank my team from MTR, the Forest Lake Lions Club and Heritage Bank for working with me to make this event possible. Hopefully we will see everyone again next year!” Page 28 - May 2017 - The Lake News

ANZAC Day holds a special place in the hearts of many Australians as we pay our respects to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As part of commemorations for this year’s ANZAC Day, students from across the electorate were invited to participate in the inaugural Oxley Electorate Spirit of ANZAC Award. This competition was open to students in Year 11 to submit a short essay, poem or piece of artwork on what the spirit of ANZAC means to them. My office received entries from schools across the electorate including Springfield Central State High School, Forest Lake State High School and Centenary State High School. I’m proud to work side by side with our local RSL Branches who also participated in the competition by sending representatives to be a part of the selection committee to select the most worthy recipient and five other highly commended awards. After much deliberation, Sam Wallace was chosen as the winner for his essay entitled – The ANZAC Spirit. Sam will receive flights and accommodation with a parent to visit Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial later this year including a private tour of the memorial and participating in the last post ceremony. Below is an excerpt from Sam’s essay. There is nothing more poignant than attending a dawn service and commemorating our brave servicemen and women over the rising orange sun. This commemoration service itself is a unifying event as all walks of life can be observed attending and paying their respects. The very idea of the ANZAC Spirit and the impact it has upon our society is something that should not be forgotten or degraded for at the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. Congratulations also goes to Royston Peterson, Paris Knapp, Mimi Dang, Fatema Noor and Mohamed Adam who were recipients of the highly commended awards. Thank you to the many students who submitted entries for the award and to our local schools who supported them doing so. I’m happy to report that the competition will again be open in 2018 and I look forward to receiving more fantastic entries this time next year.

Forest Lake F R RSL Sub-Branch Update by Steve Ford
With ANZAC Day now behind us for 2017 we can make the observation that the March and Commemoration Service for the 62,000 Australians who gave their lives is growing each year. The Board of the Forest Lake RSL Sub Branch sincerely thank those who turned out on the day and particularly to those volunteers who manned the badge selling stations. Your support shows that the defining moment in our history will not be forgotten. Leslie Boyce On this occasion may I (courtesy of Aust War Memorial) invite your attention to one of the real heroes of WWI - “The boy from Burketown. Leslie Boyce won a Military Cross near Ypres. Leslie was born in Burketown in 1897 and enlisted in January 1916 at the tender age of 18. His mother’s patriotism outweighed any fears she had about her eldest son and she readily signed the documentation allowing him to join the war. In 1916, those under the age of 21 needed to obtain the permission of parents to enlist. He reached the front line in March 1917 and in the two years on overseas service he wrote more than 100 letters to his mother. It is from these letters that some concept of the fighting on the front line can be gained. He was rapidly promoted through the ranks during his time in the trenches later being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. The operations in which he was involved (which he called ‘stunts’) seemed to be for the most part very successful and he initially formed a negative opinion in the fighting abilities of ‘Fritz’ (the Germans). This opinion changed to respect for his foes in later fighting. Leslie wrote of ‘going over the top’ when his Officer Commanding was wounded and he was made Office-inCharge of C Company for the rest of the time. He had a very high opinion of his troops and that he could not find better men than Australians to fight with. “No better men could be found anywhere. In October, he was wounded when an enemy shell landed in their midst. He commented that he was very lucky as the ground was extremely muddy and when the shell hit the ground it buried itself deep in the mud before exploding. In another letter he described his platoon’s part where he was awarded his Military Cross. The citation read “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of his platoon during an attack and of the Company on reaching the objectives, all the other officers being killed or wounded. He remained in command for two days consolidating the position and repelling counter attacks. In March he was badly wounded in both thighs by machine gun fire. He was repatriated to Australia in July 1918 having just turned 21. Due to his injuries, Leslie could not sire his own children. He was a true Australian hero even though he had not played, nor would he ever play, football.
Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach
March was a very busy month for the Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc. Firstly, there was the AGM and the election of a new committee. This was ably supervised by Rotarian Nic Curry. Frances Rowe is the new President; Vice President, Barb Grant; Secretary, Jenny Wiemers; Treasurer, Shirley Soblusky; Newsletter Editor, Brian Phillips; Programme, Janet Du Thaler; Activities, Joan Browne; Membership, Judith Weston; Publicity, Marge Breitenbach; PAQ Representative, Kevin Howson; Hospitality, Joyce Birch; Welfare, Ruth Boock. On 21 March, the Club celebrated its 15th birthday in the Garden Room of the Richlands Hotel. It was an enjoyable evening with an excellent three course meal prepared by Chef Alan Gillmore. Rebecca Heaps, Hotel Function Co-ordinator, impressed Probians with her attention to detail and the beautifully decorated Garden Room in Probus colours. Fun and laughter permeated throughout the entire evening and was well guided by Master of Ceremonies, Barry Weston. Councillor for the Forest Lake Ward, Charles Strunk, presented the Club with an Australian Flag and a Brisbane City Council Flag. The guest speaker for the evening was Daniel Castanheira, a Rotary Peace Fellow who had just returned from a trip to Mexico. Daniel is a qualified lawyer with a Masters Degree in International Relations, who at one stage worked with the Protection Unit of UNHCR. In her vote of thanks, Function Co-ordinator and Foundation President, Marge not only referred to her hardworking committee but thanked all past presidents for their contribution over the years. On the back of the evening programme, each president recorded a few memorable words about their presidency. The April Meeting was addressed by a very interesting speaker, Dianne Lonergan who wrote the story Mavis the Tugboat for primary school children to help cope with our natural disasters. It is the true tale of Doug Hislop, who during the 1974 floods in Brisbane was hailed a hero for saving Brisbane’s Gateway Bridge. The 300m walkaway, weighing more than 1000 tonnes, became partially submerged in the Brisbane River and was swept by the raging torrent towards the Gateway Bridge. Doug Hislop, in his tugboat Mavis, braved the torrent and saved the floating structure from slamming into the Gateway Bridge. The author is a volunteer at the Mater and with a group of volunteers, led by Rod Walsh, June Jolley and herself met every Wednesday for nine months to write the tale of Mavis. Her talk concentrated on the background of the process required in writing a book. The author did receive a grant from the Mater Foundation and sale proceeds are donated to the Mater’s Little Miracles. Janet passed the vote of thanks. An invitation is extended to all retirees and semi-retirees to visit Probus for fun, friendship and fellowship.
