Oxley-Chelmer History Group Update

Local doctor and nurse remembered: Dr David Gifford Croll and Winifred Croll At the regular meeting of the History Group on 15 April, members were pleased to welcome Robyn Hamilton and Marg Powell from the John Oxley Library to speak about the life and military record of two local people who were distinguished by their military service in two World Wars and by their service to the local community.

The Library is fortunate to have acquired the personal papers of Dr Croll. These have become important sources of information to those researching the events of the war, particularly at Gallipoli.

Dr Croll served both at Gallipoli and in Egypt, providing medical assistance to the wounded under the most trying of circumstances. For his outstanding services in Egypt, Colonel Croll was awarded the CBE. His wife of two years, Winifred, a nursing sister, also enlisted in 1914 and served in Egypt, before returning to Australia in 1916. She then became active in the war nurses association and remained supportive of that group all her life.

Following the war, Dr Croll set up a practice in Sherwood Road. He supported many local sporting and community associations, especially the Oxley Sailing Club, the Sherwood Amateur Athletic Club and the Scouts.

On Armistice Day 1920, the Red Cross opened a rehabilitation hospital for returned soldiers affected by tuberculosis at Ardoyne, a house on the site most recently occupied by MontroseAccess in Consort Street, Corinda. Dr Croll was the honorary medical officer until its closure in 1936.

On the outbreak of war in 1939, Dr Croll re-enlisted. He was responsible for the establishment of the 112 Australian Military Hospital at Greenslopes, serving there for the duration of World War II. Following the deaths of both Dr and Mrs Croll in 1954, the sub-branch of the RSL received the bequest of their home in Sherwood Road. For some years this became the headquarters of RSL activity in the area. It was sold in 1967 and a new centre was built at Corinda. Currently the Croll Memorial Precinct, the home of the Sherwood-Indooroopilly sub-branch, is at 2 Clewley St, opposite the Services Club.

Hands up if you’re an organised person. Our youngest daughter, at 12 years old, is highly organised and it’s not really through any intention on our part! It seems to just be in her nature to love order. For example, some of the things she really wanted to do over the recent school holidays were sort out and organise the cutlery and utensils drawers, the tupperware drawer and her wardrobe. And I didn’t stop her!

She’s not just organised with things but with her homework, her assignments and her craft paraphernalia (NB organised does not always mean tidy!). Her school bag is packed and ready before she goes to sleep and she prefers her uniform to be ironed the night before - I’m not as obsessed, um, I mean, organised, as she is, so this rarely happens. And to combat the incessant nagging from her to do it, I simply taught her how to iron it herself!

Now, these are all good habits and while I agree it’s great to be organised, it becomes a problem when it overflows to the rest of her life. It can mean that she wants everyone else and everything else to be as ordered as she is. We are frequently trying to teach her the art of ‘going with the flow’ and suggesting strategies for dealing with the fact that friends and classmates (don’t even talk to me about ‘group work’!), and even some teachers, don’t have the same level of organisation as she does.

You see, it’s that old saying - too much of a good thing.

Her desire to be organised could easily become something on which she is dependent. And this in turn can become a disadvantage in life because, as we all know, all sorts of personalities make up our world and we need to do our level best to get along with all of them.

Once again, we find that balance is the key to so many things in life. So many of our desires in life are not a problem in and of themselves, it’s the excess of that desire that becomes an issue. It is right for us to eat but when the desire for food goes beyond what our body needs, we have a problem. It is right for us to want money; how else can we pay bills and responsibly care for ourselves and our family? But when we centre our whole lives around trying to get more and more money, we lose sight of why we need money in the first place. It’s good and important to have down time, to relax and stop and smell the roses but, do that too often and for too long and we can easily slip into laziness and apathy. Not being an organised person is fine yet when we allow our lives or homes to become so messy and disorganised that we are constantly forgetting things and running late all the time, we become stressed and anxious.

What areas of your life do you need to find some balance in? Maybe you need to have a big sort out and organise some cupboards or maybe you need to let the kids make a mess and not rush to have it orderly again. Whatever it might be, creating balance only ever brings us more peace and harmony. And who doesn’t want that?

Fete season begins My favourite time of the year, fete season, is kicking off again in the electorate.

Our local schools and churches are busily preparing for their annual fetes, locating goods for trash and treasure stalls, cooking up cakes, jams, sweets and other treats, and scheduling entertainment for young and old.

This is the biggest fundraising event for the year for many of our schools, with monies raised used to support learning by providing resources and upgrading school facilities while our churches direct their funds towards supporting those in need in the local community and abroad.

I try to go to as many fetes in the electorate as I can. They are always an enjoyable day out, you never know who you will meet or what treasure you will find.

You can support our schools and churches by volunteering on the day, donating goods or services, or simply attending. Contact your school or church to see how you can contribute or to find out more.

School visits to Parliament House Every year, I have the opportunity to catch-up with students from the Indooroopilly electorate as they’re visiting Parliament House to find out more about our state government.

This year I’ve had the opportunity to welcome students from Indooroopilly State High School to Parliament House as they began their tour and I’m looking forward to greeting students from our other schools as the year progresses.

The student tours are provided by the parliamentary attendants. Students see and learn about the Legislative Council, the Honour Boards, the Mace, the Wind Yarn (the Parliament’s didgeridoo), the leadlight window, and, on non-sitting days, the Legislative Assembly. When Parliament is sitting, they can view the Parliament from the Legislative Assembly Gallery.

Oxley Men’s Shed Update

by Jim Pascoe We are having such a good time in the shed that shed members didn’t realise that a third of the year has passed us by already. We are still very busy with a variety of projects and with our mentoring program with Corinda State High School students.

A long running project and a great topic in the shed was one of our members refurbishing a rocking horse but to me it looks like a camel. It has now been completed and has had a test ride by some of the members and it didn’t break! We couldn’t stand watching Darrhyl making another one. It has been one of the longest projects in the shed so far.

This month’s guest speakers were from the military war games and a very interesting topic it was.

Our April outing was a trip to Parliament House where members were given a tour of the building and afterwards enjoyed morning tea. A great thanks must go to Michael Reynolds who organises these events. Our next outing will be to the Heritage Precinct at Eagle Farm.

One of our members, Bill Thirkill has been the recipient of having the area adjoining Englefield Road named after him as the Bill Thirkill Place. Well done, Bill.

Hope to see you in the shed at California Road, Oxley in the near future.

Go on, do something different – volunteer for QAS Do you have a keen interest in your local ambulance service? The Durack Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) is calling for volunteers to join up and make a difference.

LAC President, Mr Neville Goleby, said LACs play an important role supporting the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), especially at the local station and community level.

“The LAC role focuses on community engagement and awareness activities to help build safe and resilient communities,” he said.

“LAC’s have a strong commitment to providing a vital link between QAS and the community.”

LACs volunteer in partnership with QAS paramedics to deliver key safety messages to the community to help prepare and prevent injury or illness.

“LAC volunteers contribute to safer communities by delivering awareness programs. LACs also conduct community engagement and fundraise to enhance QAS services, such as funding further education or research opportunities for front-line staff.”

Mr Goleby said the awareness programs LACs deliver, improve the health and well-being of their fellow Queenslanders.

“A major community initiative led by LACs and delivered in partnership with QAS, is the CPR Awareness Program which has taught thousands of Queenslanders how to conduct life-saving CPR in an emergency,” he said.

“LACs also deliver other key safety messages, such as snake bite first aid, the dangers of button batteries, and LAC volunteers can assist QAS paramedics at station open days and community events.”

“Volunteering for your LAC is a great way to learn new skills, make friends and develop networks while also helping your community.”

developing networks. Many of our Old Collegians, such as Sarah Timmerman, Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Retail in 2014, are providing fine role models in this regard.

What a great motivator it was for St John’s Senior Business students to hear from Ms Vanessa Garrard, CEO and Founder of E3 Style Pty Ltd at the Annual St John’s Business Breakfast where the influence of our powerful network of business partnerships impacts the quality of their learning experiences as they prepare for their future. We were pleased to have Minister for Science and Innovation and Minister for Small Business, Ms Leeanne Enoch MP, who holds portfolios aligned with this topic, join us on this occasion.

This event in our calendar originated as a means of ensuring that our Senior Business Students had the opportunity to learn about networks and how important they are in the world of business.

However, much more was provided as Ms Garrard took them through the establishment of her IT businesses.

The following week saw the students attending the international Fast Forward Your Business Conference, a two-day workshop for entrepreneurs held in Brisbane. Students established a crowd funding page to help them raise the required funds to attend the conference with a complementary Social Impact Project developed as well. Valuable lessons on growing business systems, value propositions and customer relationships, resilience and tenacity were provided. Some St John’s students have already taken the challenge, establishing small businesses and

St John’s prepares students for a very different world where students will need to be very good communicators, collaborators, critical and creative thinkers who have a sound values base and are of good character. At the Council level our Innovation Reference Group investigates advances in the Entrepreneurship and Digital Economy, in Science and Technology; and, at the school level our recently launched STEM Institute will complement our Future Thinkers program by providing opportunities for St John’s students to deepen their knowledge of how these skills can be used in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics. We recognise that the world of Business is integral to our student’s development and these experiences are preparing them to make that first step.

Brisbane Taylor Bridge Rotary Club

New community garden in Sherwood

Sherwood has a new community garden. Where you might ask? At The Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre in Thallon Street. The new community garden is 1.5 metre by 1.5 metre in size and has been donated by the local Rotary Club of Brisbane Taylor Bridge.

Twelve months ago such an idea was raised at one of the Rotary Club’s weekly meetings. At the time, the Club was looking for a community project that would allow them to be ‘hands on’ but still serve their community. The result was overwhelming support for a community garden in their local area of Corinda, Sherwood, Graceville or Chelmer.

The next question was the location for such a garden.

Following a suggestion from Cr Nicole Johnston, The Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre was contacted as they, too, were looking for support to establish the same project.

Their project objectives were two fold. Firstly, to enhance the quality of life for those in the local community who are socially isolated due to either living alone or due to cultural and linguistic diversity. Secondly, to provide an opportunity for all in the local community to develop their skills in growing and sustaining produce for themselves and others.

Completion of the community garden has achieved these objectives by providing those who are socially isolated with an opportunity to interact with others and develop friendships and provide an opportunity to all in the local community through ease of access and location.

It is hoped this community garden will one day grow in size as new plots are added and become a space where the community can harvest produce, learn from each other, and just unwind with a cup of tea amongst friends.

Sherwood Probus Club Update

Sherwood Probus meets on the third Friday each month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood Magpies AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/ Yeronga area. We are known as a friendly, caring club where member’s welfare is paramount. We have vacancies for new members to enjoy friendship, fellowship and fun.

In early April, the theatre group and friends saw the wonderful production of Sound of Music at the Lyric Theatre.

They are looking forward to seeing Singin’ in the Rain in October.

A day trip to Esk to see the great Esk Bushbashers Band was enjoyed by all members in attendance and especially by members who took part in the show with singing and dancing and joined in a conga-line. The band consisted of local people who have been doing this for 22 years with all profits going to local charities. This was followed by a light lunch. Morning tea was at a lovely spot overlooking Wivenhoe Dam. In early June we are looking forward to a tour of the Port of Brisbane followed by a fish and chips lunch at Victoria Point.

Members were enthralled by our April speaker who told us about our debt to the Ancient Greeks.

In keeping with the Greek theme, the dinner group met at a local Greek restaurant in late April.

The garden group resumed on the first Wednesday in March and visited a large, well established old garden with some interesting plants. During morning tea under the trees, we swapped cuttings and plants. In May, we will be visiting a member’s home at Chelmer.

The lunch group continues to meet at a local golf club.

The book group meets on the last Friday of the month. May’s selection is Grey Mountain by John Grisham.

Scrabble group members are meeting each fortnight.

Both the book group and scrabble group meet at the Ken Croll Centre at Sherwood Services Club.

Have you considered scouting?

Many people I speak to, of all ages, interests and walks of life, reminisce fondly that they too were once involved in Scouting and how they still have great memories of their time in Scouting. Many of our current youth members have joined because one (or sometimes both) of their parents was involved in Scouting when they were younger.

This photo was taken in 1998. One of the young girls in the photo, who was around seven at the time the photo was taken, recently contacted me on facebook to ask if I had been a Leader at Toohey Mountain in 1998. When I answered yes, she sent the photo to me and asked what I was up to these days. I told her I was still in Scouting, currently running Richlands Scout Group.

This young lady (front row right) is now a Cub Scout Leader at Kurilpa Group, in Benarrawa District, the same District as our Richlands Scout Group. One of the other young ladies (left back row) is our own Joey Scout Leader at Richlands.

When we take on the task of mentoring young people through Scouting, we encourage them to apply the Principles and Aims of Scouting into all areas of their lives - home, school, social and sporting events - not just while at Scouting events. We teach them a broad range of skills to help them grow spiritually, socially, intellectually and physically.

For example, to help develop self-esteem by having the opportunity to succeed at new things, to encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyle and learning by doing, to give back to the community eg by volunteering at the recent Inala Youth Week events. We teach them to show respect (eg by being involved in the recent ANZAC day March). It does not matter if they are not great athletes, or intellectual geniuses, there is always something in Scouting for every child. All we ask is that they do their best and above all else have fun!

For some, Scouting ends up being a fond childhood memory. For others, they develop life long skills that leads them to succeed in their chosen field (eg Dick Smith). For some of us, Scouting is a way of life, an opportunity to give back to our community and a chance to make a difference in the life of even one child. For that one child - it is worth it. Friends of Sherwood arboretum

It’s not every day that you get to start your morning with a relaxed walk among an avenue of 91-yearold rainforest giants. However, that’s just one of the treats of discovering the Arboretum this month during a special tree walk to mark the inaugural National Botanic Gardens Open Day. B r i s b a n e ’s B o t a n i c G a r d e n s Volunteer Guides, Ray Steward and Dick Date, assisted by the Curator, Dale Arvidsson, (pictured) will provide this fascinating introduction to the Arboretum’s collection at 9.30am on Saturday 28 May. The Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA) is joining with Brisbane’s Botanic Gardens in promoting this 90-minute guided walk, which starts at the Jolimont Street entry and finishes with morning tea among some of the Arboretum’s tallest trees.

Brisbane City Council last December appointed the Botanic Gardens Curator to manage the Arboretum’s historic and diverse collection of more than 1000 native trees from across northern Australia.

Among the collection is some of the stand out ‘stars’ of Australia’s forests, reaching heights of up to 50 metres in their natural environment.

The Arboretum is home to four of the State’s best known cone-bearing trees, the Bunya and Hoop Pines, the Bull Kauri and the Queensland Kauri.

These spectacular, tall tree species are noted for their edible seed, particularly the Bunya nuts, which were of great significance to Aboriginals, who once gathered every three years in the Bunya Mountains, north-west of Brisbane, for traditional feasts and cultural exchanges.

One of the Arboretum’s most impressive features is the avenue of 72 Queensland Kauri, planted on the opening day, 21 March 1925 by a wide cross-section of Brisbane society, from the State Governor and leading scientists to pioneering families and the local storekeeper.

Right beside the northern end of this avenue is the Bull Kauri, growing on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, and regarded as the largest of Australia’s 38 Conifer (cone-bearing) trees.

Riders with Pace

As the weather begins to cool, Riders with Pace has already had entrants in three charity rides around south-east Queensland. The group is now gearing up for two important rides which will each involve thousands of riders, and are two of the biggest events on the local charity cycling calendar.

On May 15, Riders with Pace will be raising money for Diabetes Queensland in the Great Brisbane Bike Ride. This ride starts and finishes on the river at West End, and in its loop around Brisbane and suburbs passes through Jindalee, Oxley, and Chelmer along the 75km route.

June 19th sees the Brissie to the Bay and Riders with Pace helping to raise much needed funds for Multiple Sclerosis Queensland (MSQ). Starting at Musgrave Park this ride heads east to Wynnum then along the coast to Lota, then visiting Wellington Point and Cleveland Point before turning for home.

In 2015, Riders with Pace raised over $4400 across seven different charities. In 2016, the aim is for at least $5000, including $1500 for both Diabetes Queensland and for MSQ. There are two ways you can help meet these goals – by joining or by donating.

If you have a pacemaker, regardless of whether you can easily ride 100km or if you find 25km enough of a challenge, Riders with Pace has a place for you. If you’ve got the pacemaker, you can always buy the bicycle. Your heart may have electrical problems but to help other people it just needs to be in the right place. You can help Diabetes Queensland or MSQ support people with diabetes or MS to live fuller lives, and in the case of Diabetes Queensland to educate the public so as to avoid Type 2 diabetes. Winter is closing in now and the days are shorter and the temperature is dropping. This is the time of year when upper respiratory infections really flourish for a variety of reasons. We have heard a lot over the past few years about the swine and bird flu origin viruses that are spread worldwide effecting the human population. Those viruses does not effect domestic pets.

However, there are specific respiratory viruses that effect dogs and cats. The feline respiratory disease otherwise known as ‘cat flu’ is caused by a feline rhinotracheitis and/or combined with feline Calici virus.

Cats of any age can be effected and the young kittens are particularly susceptible, while some pure bred cats notably Siamese and Burmese are also more prone to the infection.

This disease is very contagious. Some of the clinical signs include sneezing, coughing, discharge from the eyes and nose, and ulcers on the tongue. All this is accompanied by a loss of appetite; cats like to smell to enjoy eating - if their sinuses are blocked or they have mucus in their nose, they will not eat.

This disease is distressing and can persist for an extended period but is not usually life threatening although young kittens can die. Vaccination is effective against the disease and will protect your cat, so talk to your vet about the right vaccination program for your cat. We have seen a number of kittens recently that have presented with cat flu and they were exposed in the breeding cattery. This will be an ongoing lifelong problem for the kittens effected.

Canine cough is a condition in dogs that is caused by several highly infectious diseases. It is very contagious and spreads when dogs are together. Dogs effected have a dry hacking cough that can persist for a long time, which is distressing for your dog and for owners as well. Sometimes the dog coughs so much it gags and brings up mucous and can continue to vomit.

Once again, prevention is better than cure. Talk to your vet about the right vaccination program for your dog so that your pet is protected when you go to the off-leash parks or the beach or other places where there are dogs that you do not know.

Often treatment is necessary for these conditions and the medications used are prescription only drugs made specifically for your pets as they need to be safely processed through your animals liver and kidneys to be excreted by the body.

So talk to your vet about a sound vaccination program that will give you peace of mind through the winter and the rest of the year.

Meg Oxley & District byGagen Garden Club Update Our meeting this month was held at Ann’s. She and her husband have a lovely garden with many trees, including two old crepe myrtles with huge trunks. She happily shared cuttings of old-fashioned plants with us.

Dale Arvidsson, the Curator of the Botanical Gardens in Brisbane was our guest speaker at our April meeting. He told us that Botanical Gardens have several purposes but they must be relevant to the present day. He reminded us that the Gardens were somewhere we could go to see really big trees (like our native figs), that we should not grow in suburban gardens.

Another purpose is to trial new plant introductions to see if they are suitable for the local conditions. They are presently trialling native hibiscus, which are indigenous to Queensland, in the new area gained by the building of Legacy Way. He said these plants are at their best in autumn or winter which is their flowering period.

So for Brisbane, Dale recommended Holly fuchsia, native hibiscus (sold under that name) and a little daisy, gynura drymophila. The daisy will bring the butterflies but he warned us that there could be more caterpillars too as the butterflies lay eggs!

Dale recommended a visit to the Japanese Garden where native plants are used instead of typical Japanese plants, as these do not do well in the sub-tropics.

The Sherwood Arboretum has had a ‘Friends’ Group for many years. A similar group has been established for the City and Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens. They have had many volunteers but will now have a more formal group. Dale expects that the City Gardens will become even more important as public space with the increase in city apartment living.

The Club plans a visit to the Mt Cootha Gardens soon so we were very glad to have Dale give a brief overview of the Gardens.

We welcomed two new members and several visitors to the meeting. Our next meeting will be at Christine’s on Tuesday, 17th May. Our guest speaker will be Jocelyn who will talk to us about ‘frogs and your garden’.

Be part of our singing community The St Aidan’s Community Choir was established in 2006 and rehearses in the second half of every year. Membership is free and the choir is for anyone aged 18 and up. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 6.30-8pm and all levels of musical skill (including zero) are welcome and encouraged to join.

The choir sings a broad range of music and performs at a number of events, including a final performance every year as part of a massed choir at QPAC. The St Aidan’s Community choir is led by experienced music teacher, lecturer and conductor, Jen Teh, and there is a focus on developing singing techniques, performing fabulous music and having a great time.

Graceville Community Garden UPDATE

Cooler weather great for gardening With the onset of the cooler weather, gardeners have been taking advantage of the magnificent autumn mornings.

In preparation for a bountiful harvest through winter (we have our fingers crossed), the enthusiastic gardeners have been preparing new garden beds; digging in the beautiful, rich compost, mulching, weeding and turning over the soil. Our abundance of rich, healthy compost is the gardener’s best friend and a huge shout out goes to Louise who has been overseeing this very important ingredient in our garden.

With the preparation completed, it was time to start the planting. At various stages over the coming months we will be enjoying beans, snow peas, snap peas, silver beet and tomatoes. We are currently experiencing some great growing weather, and if we could be blessed with a few light showers over the coming weeks, we would all be very happy.

The rosella crop has been amazing and continues to produce an unbelievable amount of fruit. The gardeners have been making jams and pickles from these bushes. It is not only the rosellas that are thriving, but the eggplant as well. The large, dark purple varieties have been producing heavily since November last year, and continue to do well and our more specialised varieties of yellow, striped and Lebanese are now bearing fruit.

The garden is also producing a large crop of pawpaw which have been delicious, not only as a tree ripened fruit but also in the guise of some green pawpaw pickle. All the gardeners enjoy the camaraderie of gardening as well as the produce which we share.

Graceville Community Garden would like to welcome anyone in the community who would like to come down and enjoy the social side of gardening, as well as learning and enjoying the garden. We have lots of space and also host community barbecues and pizza nights during the year. Some of the activities we are involved in at the garden are native bush tucker, composting, permaculture, worm farming, bee-keeping, propagating, organic produce, nature play for kids and delicious morning teas.

There is something for everyone.

The Probus Club of Chelmer and Districts draws its members from Chelmer to Oxley and all surrounding suburbs and welcomes new members to join in the fun, friendship and fellowship.

We have had a busy month with one of our members speaking at our last meeting.

She gave us an insight into the history of fashion and the many levels of fashion from Haute Couture to the High Street and the op shop. She is an Associate Professor and an academically qualified dress historian who is fascinated by the styles we wear personally on a day to day level. She feels the function of fashion is to communicate our social position and express our identity, creating a narrative about the wearer that leaves room for our personal aesthetic tastes. A talk with a little difference and we came away thinking about what fashion means to us as individuals.

In our travel talks, a member took us on a journey to Iceland, the land of fire and ice.

We were introduced to the geology of Iceland and the volcanic activity and then taken on a tour of the sights. It is indeed a land of contrasts.

The tours group had a busy month with two outings. Many members enjoyed a most informative tour backstage at QPAC and also a train trip to Sandgate with a guided tour of the Museum followed by a walk around the historic areas.

The garden group enjoyed visiting a member’s shaded bromeliad garden with a number of striking bromeliads in flower. We learnt about propagation and her approach to minimalist care. At afternoon tea we literally feasted on the fruit of a bromeliad, with fresh pineapple, pineapple and cream cheese dip and pineapple cake. An enjoyable and informative afternoon.

Our next meeting is Wednesday 25th May when Dr Philip Almond, professor and deputy director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Queensland will speak on ‘Life and Death in the Modern West’. He has published a number of books including: A History of the Afterlife; The Devil: a new biography; and The British Discovery of Buddhism. We look forward to this fascinating expose.

The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and outings with other active, like-minded retirees.

Another month into the year which is proving to be a very interesting time for us in National Seniors. At our April meeting we had a very enlightening talk by Charlie Greer, a retired prison Chaplain. It left a lot to think about.
