Monthly Update
by Les Brooks
The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club’s October outing was well attended by 46 members, who boarded our coach and headed up ‘the hill’ to the Cobb & Co Museum, Toowoomba. Our first stop was at Picnic Point for our eagerly awaited and wonderful home cooked morning tea, gratefully provided by our members. As per usual, the wind was blowing a gale and it was very chilly to boot – especially for those brave people who didn’t bring a jacket (or remember how cold Toowoomba gets)! With morning tea over, those members going on to visit Cobb & Co headed off in the warmth of the coach. The tour of the museum started with inspections of the old horse drawn coaches and other historical points of interest around transport in the 1800s. Of particular interest was a statue of a horse carved out of a single piece of timber, with only the ears being attached separately. There were many excellent interactive exhibits such as the Blacksmith Shop that kept the interest of our members. Overall, we agreed it was a great heritage experience and was really well presented. While the members were off experiencing the Cobb & Co exhibits, those that stayed back at Picnic Point prepared a BBQ lunch so it would be ready for the main group’s return. And just as everything was finished cooking and out on the tables, the coach arrived back. It wasn’t long before we were all sitting around enjoying lunch and a few drinks talking about the Cobb & Co experience. Everyone expressed their appreciation for another great day out with the Club. This month, the Club’s extra activity was held at the Monier Hotel on 12 October for a lunch with 52 members attending. As usual, there was a lot of good humour and in particular, talk of the upcoming Melbourne Cup event to be held at The Blue Fin Fishing Club. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. New members are most welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. Date claimers for the next three meetings are 18 November, 20 January and 17 February 2017.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Just the other day, our youngest was in the pool and as everyone else was sensibly not in the pool, she was chatting away as we sat and enjoyed the late afternoon and asking us, particularly her father, all sorts of questions about ‘the past’. Most of the questions had me giggling but these two, asked in quick succession, completely undid me: “Dad, were you considered attractive at school? Slight pause, then, “Were there even attractive people back then? Needless to say, our laughter was her only answer. It’s funny, isn’t it, how what is attractive is so changeable. Fashion and style are most definitely circular phenomenon. As we all know, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. And each generation will go on thinking they are new and original and oh so very individualistic, all the while oblivious to the fact that they are simply revamping fashions and trends that have done the rounds maybe a couple of times. There are some things that should never go out of fashion though, like good character traits. Kindness, courtesy, ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ are all things that we need more of in the world and we can’t afford as a society to let these things go out of fashion. It’s tempting to think they have, isn’t it? Especially when we watch the news, spend any time on social media or read a newspaper. While I was out and about recently, a man held the door open for me. What a pleasant surprise! It’s certainly not something that happens that much any more. But it gave me hope because this man was not elderly and therefore not necessarily from the ‘era of good manners’. And that very same day, a young man, I’m guessing in his late teens, picked up something I’d dropped on the pavement. Again, I was surprised and encouraged. They both probably thought I was weird though because of my, perhaps slightly too exuberant, thanks! But I wanted to make sure that I showed my appreciation of these small acts of kindness and courtesy. It’s far too easy to give in to the current trend in society of looking out for number one. We are bombarded with messages, some overt and some more subtle, to put ourselves first, to think of us before others and ensure we get what we need or want. And it takes effort to resist the call to be selfish. It takes intention and active opposition on our part. We need to swim up-stream instead of allowing ourselves to be taken down-stream by the flow. Let’s not allow ourselves to be shaped by the pervasive selfishness in our society but rather shape our society by changing ourselves. It is possible to swim against the flow, it is possible to still be kind, good and courteous, even when others around us aren’t. It only takes a small spark to start a fire, and if we start small fires of unselfishness that will catch and spread throughout our families, our communities just maybe, we can ignite the world.

Family Focus
with Mark Mackay
In this column, I’ve often referred to a famous old African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” When we hear that saying, most people instinctively and instantly agree with it. However, it’s harder to put into practice in our high-paced isolated society. Most of us don’t know our neighbours and, even if we do know them, we don’t talk regularly. We now live in a community of six-foot fences and automatic carport doors. You may think that last phrase about carport doors is strange but just think about it for a moment. Not that long ago, we would get out of our cars in our driveway and there was a good opportunity we would see our neighbour and chat. However, with electric doors, we drive straight inside and shut the door, with no opportunity to engage with those who live closest to us. So, our opportunities to be part of a village and community are more limited today than they used to be – or are they? Recently, I saw a wonderful example of ‘village life’ at the Wendy’s store in Forest Lake Shopping Centre. No doubt, you will know the set of tables and chairs next to the Wendy’s store and, one day last week, there was a group of people sitting and talking as others came along who were obviously neighbours. They stopped, chatted and invited me to join in the conversation because I knew some of them. As we chatted, conversation turned more serious as we talked about some more serious issues. It was great! It was ‘village life’ and true community. True community isn’t found on Facebook or social media. It’s found as we take the time to look around at other people and engage with them face-to-face. A good opportunity to invest in your community is coming at the beginning of December, when we once again celebrate the Forest Lake Christmas Carols. It’s a wonderful opportunity to invite neighbours and friends to sit out and enjoy the fun and joy of the night. You’ll see the details of the Carols in this edition. God knows the importance and power of community when He says, “It’s not good for the man to be alone” at the very beginning of creation (Genesis 2:18). That’s why churches are a significant place for community and true relationships. ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ And we all have a part to play in creating the sort of village and community we want for our families. God bless you as you invest in your village.

Your Teeth Your Smile by Dr Paul Holliday Oral health is whole body health There is a lot of research at the moment about how good oral health and general body health are closely related. There is an oral–systemic connection that shows periodontal disease is a risk factor for heart disease. The reason this occurs appears to be inflammation. Chronic inflammation which is part of periodontal disease has been claimed to be a major cause of diseases like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, kidney diseases, colon cancer, stroke, blood vessel damage, and complications in pregnancy. One of the most common causes of inflammation in the entire body is gum disease or periodontal disease. It is normally completely painless and often causes no symptoms at all. It can persist for many years before problems can be seen but careful examination, simple tests and x-rays show its presence. Treatment is relatively easy and certainly the sooner it is picked up, the easier the treatment involved becomes. A regular trip to the dentist and hygienist can ensure further problems are held in check. Medical research is currently studying how the bacteria from periodontal disease causes chronic inflammation and how chronic inflammation can lead to many other health problems. We all hear stories of people who dropped dead of a heart attack but who didn’t have high cholesterol or didn’t have any risk factors at all. One of the hidden risk factors appears to be chronic inflammation. The most common cause of chronic inflammation is periodontal disease. Recent research is also showing TMJ dysfunction may also be a cause of chronic inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the body’s natural reaction to some type of insult like trauma or infection. It can occur in a local or acute manner and a general or systemic manner. The general/systemic type appears to be the big problem. Blood tests can show the presence of inflammatory proteins in the body. Then finding the cause of the chronic inflammation is the hard part. Many doctors are now turning to dentists to help this fight against chronic inflammation. Prescriptions for periodontal treatment could soon be coming from your doctor as well as your dentist. If you are interested in finding more about this connection between medicine and dentistry please give the friendly team at Lakedental a call on 3879 8999.

Local Forest Lake resident and active Lions Club member, Barb Rendic, flew to Sydney in September to accept the Young Mechanical Engineer of the Year Award. The Young Mechanical Engineer of the Year Award is given to the person in the industry who “has enhanced the public image of mechanical engineering and/or their contribution to the volunteer activities of Engineers Australia; and the excellence and commitment shown to Continuing Professional Development, in particular to the attainment of their Chartered Status. After Barb finished her engineering degree, rather than move straight into an engineering position in 2005, she decided to instead enrol for a Bachelor of Education, with Majors in Secondary Maths and Physics. “I worked for six months in a school for children with moderate to severe disabilities, which only reinforced my community work for those with disabilities, said Barb. Barb attained Chartered Status (CPEng) and Professional Registration (RPEQ), and after nearly a decade of experience in Coal Ports, has now decided to shift focus. “As we move towards a greener future, away from coal, oil, and fossil fuels in general, I would love to be a part of the advancement in that direction, and am currently trying to drive my career to suit my current personal passions, which include innovation, renewable energy, defence, aviation, unmanned vehicles and transport, government policy or a combination of any of these. “The world of engineering is so diverse, everything ‘man made’ on this planet would have had an engineer involved at some point. If you consider what you can do to change the world - become an engineer - for example become a Bio-Medical Engineer and work on artificial limbs, allow the blind to see through the use of computers and electrical signals, and develop medical tools and aids, and so much more. What about working on the next generation of cars or equipment for space travel, unmanned vehicles/aircraft, and being part of the future of green energy? “What you do this year in engineering will not always define what you do next year... your career is self driven, so you need to take action to make it better, challenge yourself and take seriously the responsibility you hold as an engineer. “I enjoy supporting others, mentoring, and encouraging those in middle school to consider STEM subjects in the future, with the emphasis, of course, on engineering! said Barb. “Being awarded the Young Mechanical Engineer of the Year was a great honour and I was very humbled to be the recipient. The awards night was an exceptional opportunity to meet other engineers and see what exceptional work they are doing in their fields.

Wow, what a month; we have been very busy as a club. The Citizenship Ceremony was a roaring success with barely a dry eye in the house. As I mentioned last month, we assisted one of the local members Angela Owen, to coordinate and run one of the biggest Citizenship Ceremonies in Brisbane which was held at Calamvale. The multiculturalism that was there was unbelievable and the sharing between all the participants was a display of what this country is all about. We followed that up with the opening of the New Calamvale Aquatic Centre. If you have not been to see this centre, I would suggest you take the family and make a day of it. It’s fantastic and will serve the community well. There are life guards on patrol so you can feel safe as well as food and drinks available for purchase. We will be conducting BBQ’s on both Saturdays and Sundays during October and November. If you want to help, phone Bob on 0412 982 566. For anybody who helps on the day, we will give a sausage and a cold drink or two. Come and chat to us. Don’t forget the Carols are coming up and are the ideal finish to the year for families and friends to unite and enjoy. If there are any past Rotarians out there from any part of the world, please contact us so that we can keep you in the picture, as far as Rotary is concerned world wide. Community Carols - Sunday 4 December Once again, children and parents start the count down to Christmas, and what better way to get into the spirit of things than by attending the annual carols night. So gather family and friends, chairs, picnic rugs and your best singing voices and head to St John’s oval for the Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Carols. The much anticipated carol night will be held this year on Sunday 4 December, so save the date on your calendars now! From 5pm there will be food available to purchase, as well as music and entertainment to help create a festive atmosphere. Performances from local choirs will begin from 6.00pm. The carols committee are excited to welcome the new Director of Performing Arts at St John’s Anglican College, Russell Morgan, as MC this year. Russell lived on the Sunshine Coast before accepting the position at the College, and amongst other things, was the founding director of Inside Out Theatre Company. He has performed professionally in various musical theatre productions but in recent years has focussed on directing shows. He also loves Christmas and is excited to host the Carols this year. There will be all the usual fun and excitement featuring school choirs, including St. Johns Anglican College Brass band and lots of home grown artists. Regular Carol performers Karen Baxter, Ross Bogaart, Paul Cleary, Tammy Mathieson and Amy Winner are performing again along with the kids from Allstars Performing Arts. There will be cultural groups performing as well as an exciting variety of cultural food available this year, so why not try something new and different from one of the stalls in the cultural food tent? The night will finish around 8.15pm with a spectacular fireworks display, courtesy of Lake Dental. Don’t miss out on one of Forest Lake’s most anticipated and much loved traditions. Bring the family for a night of singing, entertainment and fun to ring in the Christmas season.
Local swim club attracts all levels of swimmers Handy to Forest Lake is Woogaroo Swimming Club which attracts all level of swimmers, from beginner to elite. Offering three local training facilities, at Goodna Aquatic Centre, Carole Park and Ipswich Girls Grammar School, Woogaroo Swimming Club provides a high level of coaching, ably lead by president, Australian Swimming Champion, Justin Lemberg. The club has a proud history spanning over 40 years and are keen to build their swimmers up and see them reach their goals. “I look forward to another successful year,” said Justin. “Early indications are that we will grow again in membership. We are a small committee that absorb a lot of work and would always love new members to put up their hands and lend some support on Club nights or through sponsorship. Also remember that our helpers are all volunteers and need to be respected that way. “As we have programs in different pools around Ipswich, it is my committees and coaches goal to bring all closer together. “Good luck to all our swimmers this year. We hope you all achieve your personal goals for the season and we look forward to seeing all the smiling faces around the pool.” The Club has some impressive stats to build on from last season: • 138 members – a record for the club and ranking them in the top quarter of all 257 swim clubs in Queensland. • Most amount of swimmers at competition level attending swim meets throughout the year, including Queensland State Championships. • Most amount of medals won at swim meets attended throughout the season. • A record of over 200 people attending the end of year function. • IGGS have achieved a huge improvement in results at both Junior and Senior Championships. • Gold Silver and Bronze medal received at School state titles - a record for the club. • Representatives in the Queensland team, another record for the club. Woogaroo Swimming Club meets at the Goodna Aquatic Centre each Wednesday night of the swimming season, with the pool open on Club Nights at 5.30pm. It’s not too late to join the Club. In memoriam: Forest Lake’s very first home owners Hailing from Nottingham, UK originally, much loved locals, Tom (also known as Fred) and Irene Allen, moved from Durack to Forest Lake in 1991 becoming the new suburb’s very first residents. Living in Inala since emigrating to Australia in 1970, Tom, a bricklayer by trade, was keen to build in Forest Lake after seeing the plans for the community. Aussie battlers and proud parents to Terry, Steven, Patrick and Betsy, Tom and Irene endured the loss of their eldest son Tony in a car accident, just two years after coming to Australia. “Dad put Terry, Steven and I through our apprenticeships,” said son Patrick. “And all three of us still live in Forest Lake with Betsy close by in Springfield. We love the area and sense of community here as well as the fact that our mum and dad were the pioneers! “About ten years ago Mum was diagnosed with dementia and had been slowly going down hill since then. It was hard on all of us to see the mother we knew, who loved to cook and knit, was active in her church community and the former vice president of Woman’s Aglow in Inala, deteriorate. “It was hardest on dad but once mum moved to the Forest Lake Nursing Home, dad soon joined her which meant they could still be together, even though mum needed extra care. “Residents might remember seeing him getting about Forest Lake on his mobility scooter which gave him the freedom to go to the shopping centre on a daily basis for brunch. He would often get funny looks as he went through various shops running into things and knocking things over but that was dad!” Over the years, the family, including ten grandchildren, would visit often and wheel Irene into Tom’s room so they could all be together. Earlier this year, Tom suffered a broken leg after a fall and, sadly, did not return to his previous health, passing away on 9 September just six days before his 88th birthday. Irene, after months of further health deterioration, passed away just two days after Tom, on 11 September. “I think he came and got her! It’s romantic in some way, we think,” said Patrick. Tom and Irene were bid a loving farewell by family and friends early last month with a joint celebration of their lives held at Centenary Memorial Gardens.

Where science and culture collide FLSHS student brings his indigenous culture to the STEM program Forest Lake State High School student, Fox will spend his Christmas holidays studying at Townsville’s James Cook University. Fox was recently awarded a place in the Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technology and Science (ASSETS). ASSETS is just one part of the Indigenous STEM Education program that recognises the fundamental importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and identity and is aimed at improving student participation and achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The program is managed by CSIRO and funded by the BHP Billiton Foundation. Fox, a proud member of the Wulli Wulli Nation from Central Queensland, will attend the residential summer school with other Year 10 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who have shown an aptitude in STEM subjects. They will work with scientists and other professionals to develop their research and study skills. Following the ASSETS program Summer School, students will continue their career focus through a mentoring program that supports them throughout school, university and into their chosen profession. Fox said, “I love anything to do with science and maths. Even as a little kid I wanted a microscope and a chemistry set, as well as a play station! For Years 11 and 12, I have chosen Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Math B and C and my goal is to get into university and continue studying Science.” Forest Lake State High School Principal, Tom Beck said, “This is such a great opportunity for Fox. He is in a position to share his passion for Science and Maths with his peers in an environment that recognises and values his Indigenous culture. We hope he enjoys his summer camp and look forward to his contribution to the school academic success in his senior year.”

With experienced dentists and assistants, Heathwood Smiles prides itself on providing quality treatment with top of the range equipment, including an in-house OPG machine, digital xrays and intra-oral cameras. “Our staff love coming to work, having built some amazing friendships with our patients, seeing the genuine smiles after treatment makes it enjoyable to do what we do,” said Business Manager, Anil Kamath. Senior Dentist, Dr Thia Baskerville, has extensive experience in rural areas and is excited to be in private practice with the opportunity to get to know and become part of the community. Teighler has a number of years experience as a dental assistant and is very patient centred and is one of the first people patients meet when they enter the practice. Chernath, after years of dental assisting experience in Australia has just returned from the US where she owned and operated a teeth whitening company and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and skill. “Something that’s a favourite with the patients is the wide-screen digital TV positioned on the ceiling above patients as they sit in the dental chair. Not only does it entertain patients during their visit, it can also provide live images so that patients can see first-hand any cracks, decay, fillings and gum disease that may be present. “We believe our patients deserve the best care possible and we are committed to ensuring everyone’s experience with us is positive and personalised.” There are a range of treatments available at Heathwood Smiles including: emergencies; extractions; root-canal treatments; paediatric, cosmetic and prosthetic (dentures) dentistry; crowns and bridges; and whitening. “We also offer tooth fairy visits to early education centres to teach children the importance of dental hygiene and the importance of looking after their teeth and gums. Forest Lake Lions Club update by Kim Grierson Leos Planning Day On the 17 September, 21 Leos and 11 Leo Advisors from our 201 Q3 district got together for a planning day. The day was hosted by St Johns Anglican College. The Leos discussed topics such as looking after existing Leo members, inviting new members, projects such as Youth of the Year (open to all Forest Lake residents between the ages of 15-19), Youth Exchange etc. Out and About We will be conducting fundraising BBQ at the following locations, come along and grab a snag and help put funds back into our community: Saturday November 5, Hans Smallgoods Outlet, McRoyle St Wacol; Sunday November 12, Bunnings Oxley; Sunday November 20, Super AMart Oxley; Sunday November 20, Masters, Richlands. Christmas Cakes and Puddings Yes, it’s that time of year again when we start thinking about Christmas cakes and puddings. We will be selling cakes and puddings again this year. We will be at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre on the 10th and 17th December. But, if you are unable to get there or can’t make it on those dates, we will deliver to the Forest Lake area. Please contact cake chairman Stuart on 0418 735 190. Keep Australia Beautiful Week We did our bit during keep Australia Beautiful week in September, walking along Forest Lake Boulevard and College Avenue. We also had a cleanup on Sunday 9 October. Compared to September’s clean, the Forest Lake Tavern and BWS was greatly improved in terms of the volume of alcoholic drink cans/ bottles etc in the immediate vicinity. However, unfortunately the fast food joints (Pizza and McDonalds especially, but there were other culprits) have patrons/customers with very poor manners, with one of the worst pick-ups on record - we have been walking this stretch this since 2012. Within the area of the bus stop on the shopping centre side, where there are several bins available people still choose to litter. This is unacceptable. Finally, with the changes in laws regarding smoking, we should see an effective elimination of butts under seats at the bus stops. However, consequentially there has been a noted increase on the grassed areas, which we cannot sweep up like on the concrete so please consider the environment (and our poor backs) before dropping your butts. Please visit our Forest Lake Lions Club facebook page for updates for the next road clean up if you would like to participate. There are also the Lake Litter Crew mornings, which anyone can attend, and this month, is on Saturday 12 November from 8-10am at the Lake. If you would like more information about the Lions Club (including membership) please call our membership chair Stuart on 0418 735 190.

With the end of the year rapidly approaching there are some important dates to add to your diary. Grand Avenue State School Twilight Markets will be held on 18 November, so come along and support one of our local schools while doing some early Christmas shopping and having fun! This year the Twilight Markets is on a Friday night and I’ll be holding a joint mobile office with Minister Leeanne Enoch MP, Member for Algester. I look forward to talking one-on-one with local residents and will make sure I have lots of goodies ready to be handed out to everyone. Good news for all – more fun in the playground! Expect to see more play equipment at Wivenhoe Circuit end of the Lake Precinct. A brand new pirate ship and additional equipment will make the all-abilities playground bigger and better! In addition to new play equipment, a barbeque and seating have been scheduled to be completed by the end of the year near the Grand Avenue and Lakeside Crescent, Forest Lake Parklands. I’m pleased to announce and invite everyone to the Forest Lake Community Planting day. It will take place on 3 December, set up at 9am, Forest Lake Park, corner The Esplanade and Montego Way. The following streets will be included: Catalina Cct, Cayman Pl, Forest Lake Parkland, Jetty Walk, Mauritius Pde, Montego Way, Montserrat Pl, Riviera Way, Santa Cruz Pl, Santorini Pl, Santorini Pl, Seychelle Lane, Sorrento Way, St Tropez Pl, The Esplanade, Tuscany Cl. I would like everyone to join me in thanking Brisbane City Council and Treescape who have organised this great day and for supplying the following: gloves; toilet, if not already one on site; shovels; access to first aid kit; safety vests; sausage sizzle after planting for volunteers; water; and free give away plants for volunteers. On a more serious note, last month, reports emerged of an anti-social clowning craze that has been reported by local residents and the media. Please try to remember these people are not clowns and have been alarming residents. Please contact your local police station and anyone with any information is asked to contact the local police beat. Last but not least, it was such a nice moment to hear Bobby and Jetzy (loved dogs) are home safe and sound with their owners. I was pleased to meet Shannon and give him the support needed to help find his lost dogs. Thank you everyone for sharing and spreading the word. I would also like to congratulate our new Federal MP for Oxley and good friend Milton Dick who delivered a brilliant maiden speech on 12 October. Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach
The breakfast at Gardenway was an enjoyable and well supported affair. Four new members were inducted at our meeting. A very special welcome is extended to Margaret and John G, Eileen H and Josephine G. Our monthly speaker was Julia Lawrence, Head of Care and Service where the ultimate goal is to keep seniors living longer in their own homes. It was a very informative talk delivered in an interesting and excellent manner. At the outset she gave her audience a thumbnail sketch of her background. With thirty years experience as a qualified nurse in the Care and Community Sector of Health, she is very aware of quality of life to be maintained in our ageing population. There are options and choices available to seniors including assistance. By the year 2014 there will be an increase of 38% in the need for facilities for Aged Care. The generation that changed everything and demanded new expectations was the Baby Boomers. This generation has an overwhelming desire to age in their ‘own place’. These people want to retain the pharmacy where they are known, support the same shops where they have always spent their money and feel connected to their community. Then there is the ‘Sandwich Generation’. This group has their own children, live on two incomes and also caring for parents. Existing providers are struggling to know how to provide and care for our ageing population. However, there is to be a change in the Government Policy roadmap and in 2017 this information will be available. What is needed is flexible, holistic and innovative support, choice and control, a feeling of belonging and curated supported for easy navigation for seniors. There should be efficiency and transparency, trusted relationships, current options available and be a cost effective program. Julia also mentioned Residential Care, problems associated with it and this often exacerbates the trauma of moving if no local facility is available. The speaker also covered the option of Retirement Living and the Retirement Act as well as the terminology of the Deferred Management Fee. Then, of course, there are Private Services to help the aged stay in their own environment. Five Good Friends is such a service soon to be launched in early November. Barbara passed a vote of thanks. We would like to invite all retirees or semi-retirees to join us for morning tea on the second Tuesday of the month at 10am at the Forest Lake Community Hall in College Avenue. Come and see what Probus is all about. Come and join in fun, friendship and fellowship. Details Membership Shirley 3879 9421 or President John 3372 1270. The Lake News - November 2016 - Page 17

Setting a new standard in After-hours doctor services Dial a Home Doctor is changing the face of the after-hour industry by guaranteeing that a doctor will be at your home in 90 minutes. The local after-hours doctor’s service with their head office in Forest Lake, is offering local residents in Forest Lake, Ellengrove, Doolandella, Heathwood and Forestdale a 90 minute service guarantee. Priding themselves on being patient focused and local to Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs, Dial a Home Doctor is excited to be able to give something back to the local community that can help improve the service for its patients. The special offer is exclusive to those patients that book online or through their Dial a Home Doctor app, before the cut off time each day, which are: Monday – Friday by 4.30pm, Saturday by 10.30am, Sunday and public holidays by 9am. The full conditions can be seen by visiting www.MyHomeDoctor.com.au. “We are taking the opportunity to provide the community with something completely different to what any other service can offer them,” said Executive Chairman, Mr Zaffar Khan. “We want to show the local community that they are always front of mind in everything Dial a Home Doctor does. “We are helping the government to reduce the queues in the public hospitals, helping residents of the community, aged care centres, and busy people who can’t access their GP’s during the day. “It’s an ideal service for mums and dads with children who can now wait for the doctor in the comfort of their homes. This is a fully bulk-billed service and we can even provide free medications to get them through the night if needed. “At Dial a Home Doctor we believe in the importance of everyone having their own GP. We are not a replacement of your own GP but when you don’t have the access to your own GP, which is always after-hours, then we can help you as we work together with local clinics and send the clinical report to your GP on the next business day.” Executive Chairman, Zaffar Khan

ICHLANDS BYSCOUT GROUP UPDAT TA N I A McLAUGH LI N

Wow! I can’t believe it’s the end of October already. Time really does fly when you’re having fun - and fun is what we are all about at Richlands-Forest Lake Scouts. Our Joey Scouts dived into October making ships and tying knots as part of our Pirate themed programs. Of course, you can’t make ships without testing them out, so it was off to Rocks Riverside Park to launch their vessels before searching for pirates gold using the old treasure map they found. They also tried their hand at making (and eating) scrambled eggs! To finish off the month - and leading in to the next theme - flying things - our Joeys headed to Oyster Point Scout Den for a sleepover before taking part in the Qld Branch Air Activities. Mid October is the time for JOTA JOTI - Jamboree of the Air & Jamboree of the Internet. The Joeys, Cubs and Scouts all participated in activities designed around the internet and amateur radio - exploration of internet communication, chatting to other Scouters interstate and overseas, playing Scouts Minecraft etc. With communication and World Scouting in mind, the Joeys and Cubs have also started written communication with young Scouts in England and USA under the Scouts International Pen Pal program. Our Cub Scouts also took advantage of the fantastic spring weather to visit Rocks Riverside Park. Here they explored the parklands and investigated some of the historical aspects of the area such as the history of the Queensland Cement and Lime processes, before enjoying a delicious sausage sizzle cooked up by some of the West Centenary Rovers. The Cubs also had fun with their Halloween program and their Flight program. Making paper planes and kites is always a lot more fun when it comes to testing them. We also took advantage of the pupil free day to join the Scout section at the Brisbane Science Centre exhibit ‘Measure Island’, where we got to have fun while learning applied maths, estimations etc. After enjoying a morning at the Science Centre with the Cubs, our Scouts headed off to Southbank Parklands for some fun and games. October has been a very relaxed month for us, engaging in some of our favourite activities such as cooking on coals, having a movie night, games night etc, as well as our District JOTA JOTI night activities. We have also been learning how to prepare for lightweight hikes and still working on mastering the knots we need for our Water Activities Target badge. Richlands-Forest Lake Joeys would like to welcome our two newest Leaders Tabitha and Danni-Elle to our Scouting family. Thank you ladies, for taking the big step and allowing our Joeys to keep enjoying the awesome fun they are used to. Bravo! The Lake News - November 2016 - Page 19

Many people these days own an investment property that needs to be reflected on their annual tax return. It is worth noting some common misconceptions about eligible deductions. Here are a few of them. Deductibility of stamp duty. Many people think that in the year of acquiring an investment property, the stamp duty paid on the purchase price is fully deductible. The operative word here is ‘acquiring’. All costs of acquisition of a property, which will also include associated legal costs and any immediate repairs to remedy pre-existing defects, are included in the cost base of the property. As such, they will help to reduce any potential capital gains tax liability on sale, rather than reduce income tax in the first year. Below market value rental. You can rent your investment property for whatever weekly amount you like but don’t think that this will always meet with the ATO’s approval insofar as offsetting rental property losses is concerned. For example, Bob rents out an investment property for $150 per week to his daughter when the market rental for that area is closer to $400. Of course the interest paid to the bank and council rates don’t change and total expenses amount to $24,000 for the year. As the rental charged is not at arm’s length, the expenses can reduce the net rental income down to zero but won’t be able to create a loss to offset against other income earned during the year. Of course, what is commercial is subjective and there is some degree of latitude involved, particularly where there may not be a need to incur agent’s commission. The key issue is be aware of the need for a reasonable and not a token rental to be charged in these type of circumstances. Travel expenses. Bill and Mary have an investment property at Proserpine and are planning a two-week holiday to the Great Barrier Reef. Given that they will be in close proximity to their property, they decide to drive past just to make sure it still looks OK and the garden has been maintained. They look forward to a healthy year end deduction for the flights and hire car expenses of their holiday. Mistake...visiting the rental property was merely incidental to the main purpose of their trip, which was, of course, for a holiday. Claim what is fair and what you are entitled to but be aware of the rules at the same time.

Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling
The Forest Lake Social Golf Club held its third round of the Club Championships at the Oxley Golf Club on 25 September with 30 players attending. There was an early start to the day with the weather dry but overcast, presenting great conditions for good golf, as evidenced by some very hot scores! Part way round we were treated to some very light rain but not enough to dampen the spirits and the pace of play was very good thanks to everyone keeping up with the group in front, rather than keeping ahead of the group behind. With the sub-par scores & returned, the Handicapper will be bringing out the sharp pencil to make some well-deserved adjustments to a few of the members handicaps. FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update
by Alan Greig g
At 11am on 11 November 1918, guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. At this time each year, Australians observe one minute’s silence for all Australians who died as a result of war. This date became known as Armistice Day. Following WWII the Australian Government agreed to the proposal by the United Kingdom that Armistice Day be re-named Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. Today the loss of Australians lives from all wars and armed conflicts is commemorated on Remembrance Day. As usual Remembrance Day will be commemorated at 11am on November 11th at the Forest Lake Amphitheatre. All interested members of the community are invited to join with representatives of all political parties and levels of Government and representatives of local schools from 10.45am. We will remember them. LEST WE FORGET. The Forest Lake RSL Sub-branch will have poppies available together with other Remembrance Day memorabilia at the Inala Shopping Centre, the Forest Lake Shopping Centre and Richlands Shopping Centre in the lead up to 11 November. Readers will recall in last month’s update I mentioned that the Sub-branch was negotiating with another organisation with the view to having our own premises (office and meeting rooms). I am pleased to announce that a Memorandum of Understanding has now been signed between the Forest Lake Sub-branch and the Durack Inala Bowls Club (corner Bowhill and Blunder Roads, Durack). All future executive and members meetings will now be held at the above address. Correction to article in the October edition: 60 000 Australians served in Vietnam, not 6000 as stated. Ed.
Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Welcome to our November edition. This year 11 November marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Meeting date for November is Thursday 10. Meeting Place - Lions Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands at 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Meeting entry includes morning tea. We have a guest speaker for this meeting. To our members who are unwell or recovering from surgery, we extend our very best wishes for a return to good health. At the October meeting, we enjoyed a wonderful performance from the Forest Lake State High School Jazz Group. It was fantastic and thank you again to the talented students from Years 7 to 12 and their great teachers. The students received a standing ovation from our happy group of seniors. In September, our group boarded the MV Mirimar on a 19km journey up river towards Lone Pine. A Devonshire tea was served as we got under way. It certainly was an entertaining, narrated journey and many of us agreed we did learn a great deal about the river’s history. There were some beautiful old historic homes and modern mansions to see along the river banks and many other landmarks of great historical interest. Our vessel travelled alongside Indooroopilly Island, home to a unique inner-city colony of fruit bats hidden among the trees. The Mirimar docked at Sherwood Forest Park. Some of us stretched our legs with a short stroll through part of the lush green parkland. It was then back on board for lunch, a lovely roast meal, a very nice dessert, finished off with tea or coffee. On our return journey we relaxed, chatted and enjoyed some John Williamson songs. What a great day out. More events have been planned leading up to Christmas including our Ballina/Yamba trip with a really great itinerary, Members free BBQ at the Lake, Melbourne Cup party, Ladies Fashion function, XXXX Brewery tour, as well as our usual coffee mornings first Wednesday of the month at The Coffee Club. Check out our website www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au/. For further information about our branch please contact either Julie on 3278 7274 or Val on 3372 4405.

by Vanessa Poskus
While Little Athletics and the sounds of running and throwing and jumping have taken over at the Forest Lake Sports Fields R UGBY this summer, the hard working volunteers of the Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club don’t stop their work behind the scenes to make each season better than the last. With the club’s AGM taking place this month, the Management Committee will welcome new faces to bring fresh ideas and energy to club operations. The path ahead will include consolidating and building on successful initiatives from this season, including Little Stingers, Come N Try Days, ANZAC Day and other fun family events. We look forward to continued development, including a much-needed storage shed, new look website, improvement of our ovals, the installation of a cricket pitch and, long-term, lighting for the top oval. We will also continue to nurture partnerships with schools and community organisations, casual hirers and our valued local business sponsors, as well as explore the options available for other sports. The Wasps and the Forest Lake Sports Fields will only grow bigger and better and remain an exciting place to be! It’s not too early to think about signing on and joining us. Our fees remain great value but it is the encouraging climate, inclusive teams, wonderful coaches and, of course, the fantastic game of rugby union that makes the Wasps the best place for kids to be their best. And for local businesses, to sponsor the Wasps means you not only get great exposure in the centre of Forest Lake, but you also help us to bring families together. For details please visit www.forestlakerugby.com.au, check us out on Facebook or contact President Vanessa Poskus on 0412 560 143.

Algester Update Last month, Justices of the Peace from across the electorate joined me at the Greenbank RSL for a Justice of the Peace Seminar. Certificates where presented to those who have diligently served the community over many years. I commend all of our JPs for their tireless efforts in providing such an important service to the community. You can now find JP services available at the Algester Electorate office with the commencement of our new Electorate Officer Nicolette Lowe. Nicolette has joined our office after a varied career working in the community and education sector across Queensland. She looks forward to meeting community members and working in partnership with local individuals and groups to identify and respond to the needs of the electorate. Please contact her on 3737 2110 or at Algester@parliament.qld.gov.au. Students in Forest Lake have impressed me with their eagerness to learn skills in coding and robotics. I have donated Ozobots to our schools to facilitate the teaching of coding, robotics and new technologies to students. Coding is the process by which a computer is advised to perform complex tasks. It’s critical that young people in our electorate have access to learning tools that will prepare them for a world increasingly reliant on this technology.

Twilight Market swings into action Grand Avenue State School P&C are hosting a twilight market on Friday 18 November from 5-9pm. The annual event is this year raising money to build a new playground for the Grade Three children which will transform a dusty area of ground into a wonderland of climbing frames, slides, ropes and swings, along with low maintenance artificial grass and a raised seating/stage area. Ray White Forest Lake are once again sponsoring the lights so make sure you come and see them at their stall on the night. The market will be held at the school both inside and outside the auditorium, with over 80 stalls to start your Christmas shopping. Where else can you out find an array of homemade and locally made items while treating your family to dinner out. Food stalls will range from the P&C barbecue serving steak burgers and sausages, pizza, Dutch pancakes, Turkish and Indian cuisine, and desserts from ice cream to fresh fruit sundaes, churros, fairy floss and, of course, coffee to keep you going. Come and enjoy this great event and support your local school.

If your child is too young to write to Father Christmas, you can write a letter on their behalf. If you would like your child to receive a letter from Father Christmas, just give the Lions Club their name and address and they will see that he writes before Christmas Day. FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y
Last month I had the privilege of making my first speech to Parliament House since being elected as the new member for Oxley in July. It was an honour to stand before the house and talk about how great the electorate of Oxley is, how our multicultural community is a shining example and also talk about some of the needs for our region. Here’s a small passage of when I spoke in Canberra on Wednesday October 12th. Named after the explorer, John Oxley, the electorate of Oxley takes in the south-west suburbs of Brisbane. It is home to young families, local businesses and industry but also dense bushland, stretching from the transport and logistics hub of Larapinta in the east to the history-rich Redbank in the west, from the leafy Centenary suburbs in the north and to the modern and exciting city of Greater Springfield in the south. Oxley is located in one of the fastest-growing corridors in the country, and I could not think of a better piece of Australia to live in and represent. One of the major issues regularly raised with me is the adequate provision of infrastructure for our growing area. The less time people spend in traffic jams means the more time they have with their families. That means more efficient business, stronger communities and a better quality of life. As part of this, I want to take the opportunity today to pledge that I will continue to work towards fixing the notorious Ipswich Motorway bottleneck. It is an issue I campaigned vigorously on during the election period. This road must be fixed, and I will not stop until this bottleneck is fixed. Multiculturalism is not just a great social strength of our nation but increasingly a great economic strength. When I walk out of my home in Durack, my office in Forest Lake or do my groceries in the bustling Inala civic centre, I meet people from all backgrounds. They proudly call Australia home and are entitled to feel welcome and part of our vibrant community. You can check out the full version on my Facebook page, otherwise I look forward to speaking to you again soon.

The last month of spring is upon us. I’ve looked forward to this season for so long and now we are one month off summer and our thoughts are turning to the upcoming Christmas season. Oh, where has the year gone? While you are making that list of gifts for friends and family, why not include a couple of living gifts? There are so many colourful plants, pots and accessories on the market. As we prepare for the festive season take this opportunity to ‘dress-up’ your garden for the upcoming BBQs, parties and other celebrations that roll around this time of the year. We are moving! Yes as from our 6 December meeting, all meetings will be held at the Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Road, Ellen Grove. Details of our move will be advised at our November meeting. Do you have a particular area in your garden that is always dry as it does not hold the water? Well, here is the ideal plant group for that area. Succulents are survivors. We’ve heard it before, but it’s worth saying again. This is an entire group of plants that have adapted to get through tough times. They have clever ways and means of storing water so that they can handle dry periods. Many succulent plants are grown for their attractive leaves. Flowers are often secondary but can be stunning. Succulents will live where other plants might simply fade away. A typical example is a sunny bank that doesn’t hold water and is baked by the sun through most of the day. An ideal succulent spot! And don’t forget, bromeliads will thrive under any tree canopy. Now that the weather is warming up, try planting some of the larger varieties of tomatoes as they prefer the warmer temperatures than the cherry types do, I’ve planted my watermelon and rockmelon seeds and the seedlings are starting to appear. Hopefully I will have another successful crop of organic fruit for Christmas and the New Year. The 6 December meeting will be our break-up party. Come along and enjoy the fun as we have a surprise guest and also Noel Burdette will be joining the Christmas celebrations with us. Don’t forget to dress up in your favourite Christmas costume. Remember this meeting will be at our new location. When buying Christmas gifts, a living plant will be appreciated. Crossacres Garden Centre will give members an extra discount when you present your membership badge. We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!
Next meeting Tuesday, 6 December at 9.30 for a 10am start. Uniting Church Community Life Centre,, 528 Waterford Road, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout on 3288 3131. Page 30 - November 2016 - The Lake News

Hot spots: An acute dermatitis
Acute Moist Dermatitis or a hot spot, is a raw skin sore that appears suddenly and looks like a burn. The skin on the rump and below the ears is most often affected but other areas can get them as well. This type of dermatitis requires immediate veterinary attention as there can me multiple areas and they can double their size overnight giving pets a great deal of discomfort. These are more prevalent in dogs, especially thick coated breeds. Most of the damage is done by the dog continually chewing and/or scratching itself, causing trauma that triggers off rapid growth of microorganisms. A pet owner usually notices or smells a weeping inflamed skin area often with matted or no hair. Pus on the skin or underneath the matted hair is common. They are intensely itchy and painful. Conditions and common underlying causes include: • hot, humid weather • dense hair coat that may not dry out easily or may accumulate dirt • clipper burn • anal sac impaction • ear infections • fleas • mites • atopy/environmental allergy • adverse reactions to food Treatment and prevention Hot spots require aggressive therapy with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. For hot spots due to specific conditions, attacking the underlying cause is the best plan of attack. This may not always be possible but some causes like flea and mite control is easy. For those dogs with ear problems leading to hot spots below and around the base of the ear, prophylactic ear washes are helpful. Regular washing with Dermcare Pyohex or Malaseb to reduce buildup of bacteria and yeast in thick coats is very helpful in preventing hot spots. Your vet will advise you on the best way to deal with hot spots if your dog suffers from them.
