Personally Speaking

Need Competent Legal or Visa Advice?

with Susannah Friis If you ever listen to any of the commercial radio stations, know a girl under the age of 20 or have a social media account, you’re probably familiar with one of Taylor Swift’s new songs, Look what you made me do. If you’ve managed to listen to the full three minutes and 29 seconds, you’ll pick up on the fact that it’s pretty much a revenge song aimed at a certain other singer. Apart from the revenge aspect, I have a problem with the premise of the song. It’s something we drummed into our children when they were growing up - no-one can make you do something. What you do is your choice, no matter the circumstance (okay, barring torture, bribery where someone is threatening to kill you or someone else etc etc - but I’m guessing most of us will never be in those extreme situations!). We like to shift the blame for our negative behaviour, don’t we? If you’ve ever heard two siblings argue, you’ll be familiar with the old “He/she started it routine in an effort to shift the focus from their own behaviour to their sibling’s. And, unfortunately, some of us never really grow out of that mindset. It’s so easy to explain away a bad temper with the words “Well, you made me angry!. Yet our emotions are ours to choose, just like our actions. Are there some situations when it’s hard to keep our cool? Absolutely! Are there some situations when it’s quite okay to be angry? Of course. But it’s when it becomes our default to respond badly and then say “Look what you made me do. As adults, we should be modelling mature behaviour for those younger than us and songs like Taylor Swift’s Look what you made me do, only encourage this way of thinking. It’s an attitude full of selfishness and reinforces the notion that there’s no need to take responsibility for our actions. And isn’t that something we despise in others? We demand our children own up to their mistakes, our court system responds to a ‘guilty’ plea with a more lenient punishment, yet so much of our culture is telling us that we are fine, that everyone else is the one with the problem. The problem with celebrities like Taylor Swift, who have a large fanbase, in particular, of mainly children under 15, is that they are so divorced from real life where consequences can’t be made to go away by throwing money at them and we can’t just say and do whatever we want knowing no-one will hold us to account. Here in the real world, there are consequences for our words, our actions and our treatment of others. And it’s a shame that someone who has the ear of so many impressionable young people doesn’t take that responsibility seriously. In our families, our schools and our community, we can counteract what the world says and own our actions. We can apologise when we’ve done the wrong thing, even if it was in response to someone else’s bad behaviour (even our children’s!). Our voices can be louder than people like Taylor Swift and, even better, we don’t need an ear worm like Look what you made me do, to do it!

Forest Lake Area F

Garden Group

by John Prout

The last month of spring is upon us. I’ve looked forward to this season for so long and now we are one month off summer and our thoughts are turning to the upcoming Christmas season. Oh! Where has the year gone? I suppose the organised people are making their list of gifts for friends and family for the upcoming festive season. Why not include a couple of living gifts? There are so many colourful plants, pots and accessories on the market. Don’t forget to check-out the great deals from our local nursery Crossacres Garden Centre. Last month, we held our biennial Friendship Day and members from 20 garden clubs shared the day with us. It was also great that Milton Dick MP and Councillor Charles Strunk could share the day with us. It was pleasing to received several emails from the attending clubs thanking us for a wonderful day. Thanks to the committee and other members who assisted with the setting up, manning the stalls and the wonderful catering team. Now that the weather is warming up, there are plenty of jobs to do in the garden that will reap rewards for you. Try planting some of the larger varieties of tomatoes as they prefer the warmer temperatures more than the cherry types do. I’ve planted my watermelon and rockmelon seeds and the seedlings are starting to appear. Hopefully I will have another successful crop of organic fruit for Christmas and the New Year and A Garden A-Fair next April. Important Notices: As this month’s meeting falls on Melbourne Cup Day, we will commence the meeting at 9 am, with morning tea available from 8.30am. This early start will allow members to attend our meeting and still have time to attend a cup function. Good luck if you are having a bet. Our guest speaker will be Lloyd Hancock discussing honey bees. Sadly our honey bees are in decline from the imported American bees. I know most of my vegetables need the Australian native bees to bear fruit and vegetables. Don’t forget that on the 14 November there will be an open garden outing at Keith and Maureen Walker’s garden. Our Christmas break-up celebration will be held on 5 December consisting of a two course spit roast luncheon and entertainment by the Baby Boomer party band with music from the 50s and 60s and carols. There will be a cost of $20 per member, and, as this cost has been heavily subsided by the club, it is restricted to members only.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

Next meeting Tuesday, 7 November at 9am (1hr earlier) start. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

Rain fails to dampen local’s generosity Organisers of the Great Strides charity walk held last month were dismayed to wake up to rain on the morning of the event. Yet, despite a 50% drop in participants signing up to walk on the day, the event still raised $7600 to contribute to funds from all across the country to support families living with cystic fibrosis. “Our target this year was again $10 000, said Lisa Moore, LJ Hooker. “So to raise $7600 from half the amount of walkers was just fantastic! And I want to say a big thank you to those who braved the weather and still came along. Those who weren’t put off by the prospect of getting a little damp enjoyed a sausage sizzle, raffles and a visit from Mr Hooker Bear. “We live in such a great community and it was so good to see those who came out and enjoyed the morning despite the rain to support such a worthwhile cause. Conservatively, 2 500 babies in Australia are born with cystic fibrosis every year. There is no cure and people with the disease face a lifetime of intervention and treatment to live a normal life. To find out more, go to www.cysticfibrosis.org.au.

Proud father, Craig Pratt with son Josh at the recent State Championships. When Forest Lake youngster, 14 year old Josh Pratt, picked up his first rifle at age 11 after years of watching his dad shoot, his parents quickly saw he had a keen eye and a skill for marksmanship. With his family’s encouragement, Josh joined a rifle club and after trying the more popular full bore shooting with a riflescope, changed over to the more traditional discipline of Target Rifle after a prominent target rifle shooter suggested with age and opportunity on his side, Target Rifle was where he could represent Australia on a world stage. Proud parents, Vicki and Craig say Josh enjoys the challenges involved in the sport. “It’s so much more than just picking up a rifle and aiming for the target,” said Craig. “You have to be able to read the wind and adjust accordingly based on its strength and direction, fire a perfect shot and after making necessary adjustments, do it exactly the same time after time. “The recent State Championship he won in August saw extremely blustery conditions and he was able to accurately recognize the wind changes and adjust accordingly to defeat many highly skilled and more experienced riflemen. But it’s not all concentration and challenge, he really loves the camaraderie amongst his fellow members at the Natives Rifle Club.” This year alone, Josh has won both state and national championships and thanks to his recent win in August, now holds the record for the youngest person in Australia to win B Grade at a Queens State Championship. There is no age categories in Target Rifle Shooting which means Josh shoots against an open age field, often against those who have been shooting since before he was born. He is currently in B Grade and will quickly progress to A Grade after a few more competitions. This will then see him competing in the same categories as World Champions including those attending the Commonwealth Games in April. The grade 9 Westside Christian College student isn’t sure what he’d like to do once he finishes grade 12 but target shooting will always be a hobby he enjoys and will continue to compete in, with his future sights set on the Commonwealth Games. Target Rifle shooting is not a physical sport, it is a skill and sport that can be learned. The Queensland Rifle Association Under 25 Team is currently looking to recruit and train new members between the ages of 11-24 for upcoming competitions. Anyone interested can contact the under 25 team captain Erica Young on erica89young@gmail.com.

Locals rally to raise funds for domestic violence charities

Marilyn Thurtell and the MTR team raised over $26,000 towards the incredible overall total of just over $136,000. Brisbane’s largest and newest corporate running challenge, The Running CEO’s Run for Charity Event, was held on 7 October when over 1,200 people attended the Pallara road course, to walk, run or jog 10kms. The charity run was the culmination of 10 months’ effort on the part of 20 of Brisbane’s leading CEO’s to raise awareness and fundraise for people affected by domestic violence. It was announced on the night that the Running CEO’s campaign had raised an incredible $136,000. The charities involved in the Running CEO’s campaign were RizeUp Australia, Women’s Legal Services Queensland and Run 2 Give Foundation. Running CEO’s Founder and Director, Maria Becis, chose to support these charities because they provide practical assistance and make a tangible difference to victims and families affected by domestic violence. Marilyn Thurtell, Principal and Owner of MTR Property Group Forest Lake, was one of the CEO’s who took part in the Running CEO’s campaign and together with the MTR team raised over $26 000 and bringing home the title of Top Fundraising Team. “I would like to thank everyone for their donations, their time, and their efforts throughout the many fundraising events I have held over the duration of the campaign. I would like to thank each and every person who ran on the MTR Team. It was fantastic to see so many people willing to come down and complete the 10kms. “I believe that community involvement can effect real change, and key to this is building meaningful relationships and collaborating with other members of the community to help create positive outcomes and changes that benefit the whole community. “The Running CEO’s Campaign was about putting that thought into action, and I am so glad it has been such a great success. I have personally seen how these charities have made a positive difference in people’s lives, and for me, knowing that the money we have raised is going to actually make a difference in someone’s life – that’s what is important.”

ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N

E

Our Group came straight out of school holidays and hit the ground running! Our Joey Scouts got straight into their Caring and Sharing Challenge. The first week activities included a program at our den, with the Cubs, based around caring for each other. Week two meant a visit to Durack Fire Station for the Joeys and Scouts, while the Cubs enjoyed a messy night at the den. The Durack Fire Station visit was very interesting. The Scout section also joined in on this visit as part of their Citizenship Target requirements, and we all learned about how they prepare for an emergency and the youth members got to hold some of the equipment. They were also excited to hear a call out alarm and get a special message from Fire Comms. The following weekend, as part of their Caring and Sharing Challenge, the Joeys were treated to a behind the scenes tour of the RSPCA Wacol facility, including the Animal Hospital. Special thanks to our own little Summer, who very caringly purchased items to donate out of her own pocket money. I love that she is applying the aims of Scouting so willingly and without prompting. All sections of our Group also participated in McHappy Day, raising funds for Ronald McDonald House Charity. We also spent a few hours handing out billy tea and damper at the Grand Opening of the new Bunnings Oxley outdoor nursery. I’m pretty sure the kids were more excited by the jumping castles and other activities that they got to join in on once they had completed their service time. October is also the time of year we participate in JOTA JOTI or Jamboree of the air and internet. A Jamboree is a large gathering of Scouts at an event. Because Scouting is such a wide spread International organisation, sometimes we have youth members who are geographically isolated. JOTA JOTI gives all Scout members an opportunity to interact with Scouts from other cities, States or Countries using radio, skype, Scout Minecraft, facebook chat etc as well as other activities suited to younger people. During week four we enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the Rocklea Fruit and Veg Markets. Part of Scouting focuses on teaching young people good eating habits and we thought this would be a good way to show them a part of the process of how the food gets to their tables. After all, Scouts is about learning by doing! After all of the service work and tours, we decided to end the month by joining in the Light Party hosted at Grand Avenue State School. The kids enjoyed getting dressed up and hanging out with other kids in a fun and positive alternative to Halloween. Meanwhile, our Venturers spent the month visiting Parliament House, discussing Disability inclusion in Scouting, preparing for a two day hike and attending a weekend Leadership Course. Congratulations to Marcus and Troy on completing Bronze Boomerang, and Charlie on completing your Silver Boomerang. Congratulations to Patrick, Cooper and Annaliese on completing your Promise Challenge. Well done Group ~ Rosella.

Finance Corner

WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.

Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues

So you’ve seen a great property in which you would like to live and decide to move out of the current home, rent it out as an investment property, and move into the new one. You borrow a $40,000 deposit by redrawing on the existing home mortgage as security, just as you did when you bought that new car for $35,000 last year. No problem! After the borrowings, the mortgage against the old home is $175,000. Such a decision is certainly quite a common scenario, and no, there isn’t a problem as long as you are mindful of a few issues when it comes to tax. The first issue is how much of the loan will have deductible interest to claim against the rental income that will now be received. Is it the full $175,000, or something substantially less? Rule No. 1 - it is the purpose of the borrowing that is always critical when it comes to tax deductions, not the means by which the finance was secured. The $40,000 was borrowed solely for the purpose of acquiring the new residential home and has nothing to do with the previous home which will now generate taxable income. Rule No. 2 – you cannot claim interest on borrowings to fund private expenses. Accordingly, the $35,000 for the new car, assuming it is not used for work related purposes, represents a private expense. In fact, it is likely that the portion of the loan attributable to the car may be slightly less than $35,000, given that repayments would be proportionately reducing both the original borrowing and the additional $35,000, but let’s not get too technical at this stage. Essentially, only the interest on $100,000 would be deductible against the new stream of rental income, so a ratio of 100/175 would have to be applied to the total interest bill after the $40,000 borrowing. One needs to be mindful also of capital gains tax (CGT) implications, and it is suggested that an appropriate market valuation of the previous home be obtained as the CGT applies to any increase in the value of property since it became income producing, and not on a time apportioned basis since it was first acquired. Other quite complex rules can apply in these circumstances as well.

We wish all Probians who are not in the peak of health a speedy recovery and to the overseas travellers a safe return. The guest speaker this month was Dr. Clifford Saunders, a brain reprogramming doctor. The most fascinating topic of the year especially relevant to our senior society. Most pet owners have their pet’s parasite control well organised. Despite this, I frequently see pets that have inadvertently been changed to products that do not prevent everything the pet owners think they are preventing. There are many odd parasites that affect dogs but in the Forest Lake area the following need to be prevented. Fleas. Fleas are small brown parasitic insects that infest the coat and skin of your pet. Many people think fleas are just an irritation but if left untreated, they can cause skin disease, tapeworm infection and anaemia in some dogs, especially young pets Ticks. Paralysis Ticks are small, round-looking parasites that burrow into your pet’s skin to feed and breed. While doing so, the paralysis tick produces a neurotoxin, which is absorbed into the blood and then gradually diffuses into the nervous system, causing progressive, life threatening flaccid paralysis of all muscles. Intestinal Worms. Dogs and cats can become infected with a range of intestinal worms including: hookworms, roundworms, whip worm and tapeworm. Intestinal worms from our pets can be transferred to other family members and children, the elderly and people who are immunocompromised are at a higher risk. Heartworms. Heartworm is a parasite that is transmitted by mosquitos and infects both cats and dogs. The parasite matures in the pet’s organs for six months, becomes a worm, and then migrates to the heart and the blood vessels of the lungs. It causes very severe disease that cannot be easily fixed. Not all pets will be exposed to every parasite especially if they stay at home or even stay indoors like a lot of cats do. It is best to assess what the risks are for your pets and work out the most convenient and effective product that suits. It is best to talk about this with a pet care professional so that you are aware of your treatment options and to make sure you are on the right product.

There’s always something new and exciting happening in Forest Lake. The month of September stood out for lots of good reasons, especially, with so many festivals, market dates, school events – too many to mention. Forest Lake State High School Library Art showcase. Congratulations to Principal Anne McLauchlan, students, staff, parents and volunteers for an incredible night of dance, culture and remarkable art at the annual Forest Lake State High School Library Art showcase. I consider this a highlight! Thank you Anne and everyone for your hospitality and invitation to spend a wonderful evening with you. Federal member for Oxley Milton Dick and I could not have asked for a more delightful night. Homeless Connect. This year, the ward office will be once again collecting non-perishable food items for the Homeless Connect event. I encourage residents to participate by donating items before Thursday 23 November. Homeless Connect is an event to raise awareness of those experiencing or at risk of becoming homeless. I’m pleased I will be doing my part to support this very worthy cause. World Teachers Day Nominations are now open. This year, I have spent lots of quality time with local teachers and feel it’s appropriate to acknowledge them publicly for all the good work they do. I would like to thank all the students and former students who made time to nominate their local teacher for World Teachers’ Day 2017. Your stories were truly moving, inspirational and heart-warming. It reminded me how truly grateful I am to all of my teachers who made sure I was given the opportunity to make a difference in my later years. I will forever be appreciative to my grade 7 teacher Mrs Daley, who helped and managed to get everyone in my year 7 class to a first-year university level with speed reading course(SRA) when the speed-reading course was taught in schools. As a result, I learned valuable comprehension skills and possess the necessary literacy skills needed in my day-to-day life. Keeping our Lake Parklands looking beautiful. As we draw closer to the end of the year, I cannot thank all the residents who use their own time to keep our Lake Parklands and surrounding streets clean. I was pleased to join the Forest lake - Australian Air League Squadron at the monthly litter pick-up at the Lake Parklands precinct. What an enthusiastic team of volunteers! A special thank you to Lea and everyone who goes above and beyond to keep our community looking beautiful. Don’t forget – we have litter pick-up equipment you can borrow for free at the Forest Lake Ward office. As always, if you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to contact my friendly staff at the Forest Lake Ward office on 3407 1211. I hope to see you when I’m out and about in the ward.

I’m committed to ensuring that all young people have access to a quality education no matter their circumstances. This includes making sure our schools are properly funded and our teachers well supported. We’re lucky to have some of the best schools and teachers anywhere in the country right here in our community. Whenever I visit a school, it’s clear to see the dedication and passion of our teachers. As this school year comes to a close this month, almost 30,000 students in primary and high school will finish their studies ready for the summer holidays. This includes 1,500 grade 12 students who will be doing their final exams and completing their last year of school. This is a major milestone for our young people and their parents who have worked hard for this achievement. There are many pathways available for graduating students which include undertaking further study at TAFE or University, entering the workforce or spending some time travelling abroad. Whatever the case, I send my congratulations to all graduating students and wish them the very best on the journey ahead. I’m fortunate to meet many students not only by visiting schools in our community but also when year 6 students make the trip to Parliament House in Canberra. This year, schools from every corner of our community have visited the nation’s capital to learn more about democracy and law making in our country. There is also financial assistance available through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) initiative for students in Years 4 to 12 to travel to Canberra. More information for schools and parents is available through their website www.pacer.org.au. As always, if there is anything I can ever help with, please contact my office on 3879 6440 or send me an email at Milton.Dick.MP@aph.gov.au.

Family Focus

with Mark Mackay

Chemistry was never my strongest subject at school. I didn’t see the point in doing experiments for which we already knew the outcome. It seemed to me that all that was proved by me doing the experiments was how poorly I did them (given the results). I followed the text book as best I could but I just couldn’t get it...until my teacher came by my desk one day and demonstrated the experiment for me. As much as we may learn things through hearing them, there is no greater teacher than example. Research shows that “70% of all knowledge we possess has come to us through our eyes, not through our ears.” The same principle applies in our families. Our kids learn more about life from watching us than listening to us. We live in a time when our words as a society are not matching our actions. We proclaim tolerance and respect and yet we berate and belittle those who disagree with us. On one hand, we say we want a pluralistic society and yet we decry people who hold different opinions. Social media has been a massive contributor to this dichotomy. And our kids are picking up on it! Young people are feeling the pressure of having to hold other people’s opinions for fear of being called names and being pigeon-holed for their views. It’s not enough to say “people have a right to say what they think,” if we’re then going to deride them for holding those views. We need a culture of respect for different opinions and for those who don’t see the world the way we do. And that culture will only be built by us living out that virtue. Actions speak more powerfully than words and people will follow them (and are following them)! Over recent years and months, we have seen some incredibly important debates being played out in our society – same sex marriage, immigration, climate change, to name a few. These debates are pivotal in shaping our future society and they deserve better than “clever” memes on social media. They deserve better than name-calling and hurtful epithets. They also deserve better than some in the social media and political realms using them to score cheap points. If we want to have a society where we treat each other with dignity and respect, it starts in the home by modelling how we can respectfully disagree with others. As Jesus taught, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” These important issues continue to be discussed and debated. Let’s set a standard in our homes and communities of listening to others with the same respect we would expect of them. Let’s set an example for our families to follow. Algester Update Forest Lake Schools. As a former school teacher and mother to two teenage sons, I am incredibly proud of the work that the State Government has done in our schooling sector. I know how far an extra hand in our classrooms can go in ensuing our children get the quality education they deserve, so I’m proud that over the course of the Palaszczuk Government’s term, we have invested more than $11 million dollars in our local schools. This has helped out our kids by employing 27 extra local school teachers and many more teacher aids in our classrooms. By doing so, already high achieving classrooms like those in Forest Lake State High School will be able to teach more students more effectively. Our Environment. The Statewide Landcover and Tree Study Report has been released and shows the rate of excessive tree-clearing in Queensland has skyrocketed to 395,000 hectares per year. This rate has more than doubled since 2011-12. This is equivalent to over one thousand football fields being cleared each day, or an area more than twice the size of Brisbane being cleared each year, and the impact this is having on our environment is devastating. Queensland is now contributing ninety percent of Australia’s carbon emissions from land use, and this is having a real effect on our state. Land clearing has been directly responsible for two plant species becoming extinct, and has been identified as a real threat to 739 flora and 210 fauna species. At the 2015 state election, the Government committed to reinstate vegetation management legislation, which was repealed by the previous state government. However, when this Bill was introduced to the Parliament in March 2016, it was blocked by the opposition and crossbench. I want to make sure our state’s great natural heritage is protected for generations to come and the Great Barrier Reef continues to provide opportunities for tourism and regional communities. If you feel strongly about this issue, please sign my petition to join me in supporting strong, sensible tree clearing laws to stop the destruction of Queensland’s bush. You can find the petition online at www.fight4qld.org/laborstreeclearinglaws. If you would like to read the report, you can find it at https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/land/vegetation/mapping/slatsreports#slats-most-recent-reports.

Local support for those effected by cancer Anyone who has been effected by cancer, either themselves or a loved one, will know that the support of others is invaluable to coping with the emotional rollercoaster that is the cancer journey. Forest Lake resident, Charmaine, is all too familiar with the highs and lows of battling cancer. “I lost my Dad to cancer after he battled with two cancers six years ago. My sister fought and won her battle with cervical cancer over ten years ago,” said Charmaine. “I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) three years ago and now, after treatment, am partially in remission.” Seeing a need in Forest Lake for a support group for others travelling a similar path, Charmaine would like to hear from anyone interested in getting together on a regular basis. “During my cancer journey, I was unable to find cancer support group meetings available for patients and their loved ones in my local area. I believe that my new journey is to give those who have been touched by cancer and loved ones a safe, friendly and supportive place to share their stories. I am blessed to be sponsored and supported by the Uniting Church in Forest Lake who have kindly offered their premises to hold the meetings.” The first meeting will be held on 10 November from 7 - 9pm at the Uniting Church hall, and every second Friday of each month. Charmaine plans to have guest speakers attend some meetings and talk on topics such as health and wellbeing, naturopathic information as well as a local GP and a counsellor regularly attending. If you’d like more information or to express your interest in attending, phone Charmaine on 0400 346 610 or send an email to charmaine.FLCSG@gmail.com.

Monthly Update

by Les Brooks

The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club’s October activity was a trip to Redcliffe’s Woody Point Reserve on the Bay for a picnic day out. The weather was perfect despite early predictions of rain. After a wonderful morning tea, some of the members strolled along the foreshore and even attempted to ride on the playground equipment which was hilarious! A few members stayed behind and indulged in a game of Bocce (Pétanque for the French people amongst us. Pétanque is a form of boules where the goal is to toss or roll hollow steel balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet or jack, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground.) - fortunately all survived without squashed feet. In the meantime, a few of the men fired up the BBQ’s to start cooking our picnic lunch. The wonderful aromas wafting from the onions and sausages enticed members back from their walks. After a relaxing lunch and a few wines, on the way home the bus took us on a scenic trip around the foreshore and past some beautiful homes, before heading off into the sunset. On Wednesday 11th October, the Clubs ‘Extra Activity’ was a lunch at The Hotel Monier. As usual there was a great turnout of 40+ members who enjoyed a wonderful lunch with their friends. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Are you over 50, new to the district, recently retired, looking to get more involved? We would love to meet you. Come along to our November meeting and you will be made very welcome. The movie and entertainment group have enjoyed excellent movies and shows this year. There’s always time to enjoy lunch afterwards. Our movie group travel to Orion Cinemas in Springfield Lakes, an easy commute from Forest Lake. The entertainment group love to attend morning shows at the Logan Entertainment Centre also no great distance to travel. We look forward to enjoying many more in 2018. The photo with this edition was taken at Queens Park, Toowoomba while we were on a fabulous four day three night trip up to Toowoomba. So much to see and do. We had a great time. At the last meeting members enjoyed the songs sung by our guest entertainer, Romain. He has an amazing voice and sang many requests from the members. Lots of people joined in and it was great to see the ladies who like to get up and rock. Ladies, you’ve still got it. Our popular Melbourne Cup Function is always loads of fun. At the time of writing all plans for a fantastic event are well in place. We are all ready for Christmas Lunch next month, Thursday 14 December. Is it possible we have been very good and will get a visit from Santa’s helpers? We are collecting old Xrays and used postage stamps for Lions. If you have any you wish to dispose of please contact the number at the end of this article to arrange for pick up. With the postage stamps, please leave some of the envelope around the stamp for ease of removal by the volunteers. We are also continuing with collection of no longer needed reading glasses. Next Meeting date is Thursday November 9 at The Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands, 9.30am sign in, 10am start. Branch meeting is followed by guest speaker. Join us if you can for lunch at The Lion after the meeting. This is the last Branch meeting for 2017. Christmas Lunch in December and we recommence in 2018 on Thursday 8 February. News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling The Club’s fourth round of the Club Championships was held at the Gailes Golf Club on Sunday 8th October with a field of 27 players, all eager to put in a good score. The recent rain helped soften and green up the fairways, and produced slow greens. The course proved to be a challenge for most players with only two players returning sub par results. Prizewinners on the day were: A Grade - winner Brian Cruickshank, net 67; runner-up Dan Jones, net 72; B Grade - winner Dave Chettle, net 74; runner-up Jason Rowe, net 77; The Long drive exponents were Don Pickwick (A), Mark McNaughton (B) and Kirrily Brooke (Ladies) on hole 15. Nearest approach winners was Brian Cruickshank (holes 4 and 17). Nearest the pin winners were Kirrily Brooke (hole 3); Mark McNaughton (hole 6) and Brian Cruickshank (hole 12). Our second game in October was held at Redland Bay Golf Club, our Clubs first game to be held at this lovely course. Results for this game will be in the December edition of The Lake News. Date claimer for the next game is November 12 at River Lakes Golf Club, with an early 6.30am tee time. If you play golf and are interested in joining our club, please contact me on 0417 213 659. Thanks go to our Club Sponsors, Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake, the Jindalee Golf Club Professional and the Drummond Golf Club Underwood.

A strong contingent of seven Forest Lake Lions recently joined over 330 others at the District 201Q3 Annual Convention in Dalby. During the weekend, keynote speakers provided valuable information on Lions medical research activities as well as electing the District’s key leaders for the next three years. Commitments were made to continue with several important projects including: Children of Courage Each year, the Lions Club of Forest Lake honours local Children of Courage which recognises a very special group of children and their families. It is not a competition. Every recipient of an award is a winner in his or her own right. Children of Courage recognises children want to be accepted by others, regardless of any special needs they may have. This program awards children who have successfully overcome additional barriers. Lions inPlace Lions inPlace provides short term crisis accommodation and related support services for single women, families and single men who have overnight or extended contact with their children. There is also a shelter comprising self-contained units for women and children escaping domestic and family violence. The shelter provides safety and security at a confidential address and staff can be contacted 24 hours a day, seven days a week in case of emergency or for after-hours admissions. Camp Duckadang This facility is set on a magnificent 1.5 hectare site on the upper reaches of the Brisbane River and provides a truly picturesque setting catering for groups wishing to absorb themselves in the countryside and its many attractions. Owned and operated by Districts 201Q1, 201Q3 and 201Q4 of Lions Club International, Camp Duckadang offers social, community and school groups the ideal location to be challenged and learn new skills as individuals and teams, enjoy relaxing times together and broaden experiences within a natural environment. Want to know more or join the Lions? Find out more at our new website, www.forestlakelions.org which outlines how your Forest Lake Lions serve our community and others in need. If you have one hour spare a week or at different times, we would love to hear from you. Come see what we are about. Please contact our Membership Chairperson, Lion Stuart Grierson if interested on 0418 735 190.

Wasps Monthly Update

R

by Vanessa Poskus R

UGBY

One of the goals that the Wasps have had is to keep our teams amongst rugby action in the off-season. This year it has been accomplished, via the inaugural Super Saturday 7s Competition run at Ballymore for U10 teams. For four weekends our players are doing friendly battle with other clubs in our first experience of this form of the game. As usual, our players have got into it with gusto and grit and it puts them in good stead for the shift to a Sunday game day next season. The shift to Sundays will be the first the Wasps have fielded for two seasons and is a significant moment in the growth of the club. We are keen to find any players in our community who would like to join us for either a mixed U10 team or girls U11s Viva7s team. Please get in touch via our website www. forestlakewasps.com.au to be part of it. Our AGM was held in October and it remains as important for us as it is for any non-profit organization to have dedicated volunteers in place to make any sports activity available for children. This is even more so if you want to keep it local. We are fortunate at the Wasps to have amazing people who give sacrificially so that our grassroots venture will not only survive, but thrive. We are always happy to have more on board! We are a community group and we invite the community down to the ovals at any time to use the facilities, but we would ask people to remember that as we are the primary Lease holder our activities will necessarily take precedence from time to time. We do our best to ensure these activities do not impinge greatly on the general public’s enjoyment and consider the needs of local residents as much as we can. However, if you are an organised team or other group running training or a regular activity, you do need permission and to hire the grounds for this purpose, as our members pay for its maintenance. We are more than happy to include more local sports in our activities! We have also had some issues of late with dog owners taking their dog off-leash on the Fields. There are BCC signs at all entrances outlining that BCC By-Laws apply and as such dogs are to remain on a leash. There is a dog off-leash park right next door to the Fields that can be used to give Rover a free run. We want a safe place for our kids and to this end, we ask dog owners to consider this and please keep your dog leashed. We look forward to lots more summer fun down at Forest Lake’s Sports Fields!

SHERWOOD / INDOOROOPILLY RSL Sub-Branch Update by Alan Greig g

Remembrance Day, November 11th, 2017 will be with us as usual except the RSL Forest Lake Sub-branch commemoration will be slightly longer this year. The Memorial Day Service starts at 10.30am at the RSL Lakeside Memorial. The Service will be followed by the Dedication of a new War Memorial to all War Animals. In view of the commemoration for War Animals, it is appropriate to devote this month’s article to animals at war. Aside from the more famous charge of 4th Light Horse Brigade on October 17, 1917 which led to the capture of Beersheba, and Simpson and his donkey who rescued many wounded soldiers at Gallipoli, there is a lesser known element of dogs in war. The following is an excerpt from A Centenary of Australian Animals at War by Nigel Allsopp. “The 4th Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR) worked with tracker dogs in Vietnam where they were hated by the Viet Cong (VC). They were regarded as a valuable target and a bounty was placed upon on the heads of both the dogs and their handlers who shared every danger together. It was inevitable that a very strong bond developed. Eleven tracker dogs were deployed in South Vietnam during the Vietnam war. Each tracker team comprised of a tracker dog, handler, cover man, team commander (visual tracker) and signaller. The teams would be airlifted by helicopter into an operational area. Once on the ground the tracker dog would be put on the scent of the retreating enemy and lead the fighting elements towards the enemy, which is one of the most dangerous jobs in any war, requiring both excellent scouting skills as well as absolute confidence in the tracker dog’s ability to sense the enemy before actual contact was made. Although not specifically trained to detect mines, the dogs were intelligent and sufficiently well-trained enough to do so. As sad as it may seem all tracker dogs in Vietnam were left behind when our troops withdrew just as every other war animal before them.” The Lake News - November 2017 - Page 27
