Great fun had by all at Forest Lake State School Fete

Even the threat of rain and storms could not keep the crowds away from this year’s Forest Lake State School Fete. With a large variety of rides, entertainment and tempting food, this year’s event proved to be a hit with both young and old, despite a brief interruption of some rain during the day. Stay tuned for more details about how much was raised for the school.

One of the most precious verses in the Bible to me is Proverbs 27:6, “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” Many people think that one of the marks of true love is an unmitigated acceptance of another person without ever challenging or correcting them. In other words, if we truly love someone, we’ll just accept them as they are and never ask for any change. It’s this thought that inspired Billy Joel to sing, “Don’t go changing to try to please me...I love you just the way you are.” However, real love means we’ll have the difficult and awkward conversations with someone because we are prepared to deal with the awkwardness for their well-being. If we see a stranger doing something wrong, we may not confront them because we don’t want the potential conflict. However, if we see our child doing something harmful, we’ll confront them for their own good, regardless of the awkwardness and conflict. Love means we’ll have the difficult conversation. We all need those people in our lives who will give us the difficult word. We need people who we have invited into our lives to be that honest mouthpiece. But, it needs to happen in the broader context of friendship. A confronting word given in isolation is hard to receive. But the confronting word of a friend, who has our best interests at heart, can (as the proverb says) “be trusted.” Indeed, if you find yourself in a situation where you are confronting and correcting someone, ask yourself, “Am I doing this for their good or so that I am heard?” If it’s not done in the broader context of a friendship or relationship, it may be more about our own motives than their good. As parents, it is particularly important that we have those people in our lives who can show us where we might be getting things wrong but, again, in the broader context of a relationship. My wife has an older friend who she particularly trusts. They have built a strong, honest, real friendship and, on the basis of that friendship, my wife trusts her friend to be an honest mentor. That’s the power of community – real, honest, authentic community. Not the false community of social media where people post comments. Rather, it’s the sort of community that gives and invites true, honest investment into our lives. It’s the sort of community for which God has designed us. “It takes a village to raise a child.” And that village needs to be authentic. Let me encourage you to seek out that trusted friend and authentic community. It’s how we can work together to invest into the next generation.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis It’s a well documented fact that there are links between animal cruelty and harm to humans. And if you’re a dog owner, like me, you probably become wary of people that your dog doesn’t seem to like, I know I certainly do. Here in Forest Lake, we enjoy beautiful surroundings and an abundance of wildlife, so it’s distressing to hear that they aren’t always treated with the respect and care that all inhabitants of this planet deserve. One of the bonuses of living in a friendly community like Forest Lake is that kids can enjoy a little more freedom than in other suburbs. While I’m all for kids being kids and encouraging independence, unfortunately, when kids get together, the best choices aren’t always made. It may be timely to chat with your kids, particularly if they walk to and from school or are unsupervised in public spaces, about treating animals and birds with kindness. Often the best thing we can do for wildlife is not disturb them and if that’s unavoidable, to at least minimalise our impact and not aggravate them in any way. In this month’s edition, on page 24, you’ll see an article written by local vet and regular contributor, Dr Ian Gorrie, specifically on the effects of feeding wildlife. Ian gives some great advice about living side by side with our wildlife and I would encourage everyone to take the time to read it. I know that the majority of Forest Lake residents are respectful and caring of our animal friends, including the ever growing cygnets that we are lucky enough to have on the lake and that it’s a small minority that seems to spoil it for everyone. But! If you’ve been reading this column for some time, you’ll know I am ever the optimist! There are really just so many, many good people in Forest Lake that from month to month I have to make very difficult decisions about what articles to publish. Because I hear about so much good in the community, I know that we can band together and help our animal friends live a peaceful life alongside us. On page 9 of this edition, you’ll see an article about the Lake Litter Crew. What a wonderful initiative it is! Why wait until Clean Up Australia Day, as great a day as it is, to tidy up our own area? The Lions Club in Forest Lake are also very active in keeping areas clean with their ‘adopt a street’ program. Cleaning up the litter in our suburb does much more than make it look better; it stops wildlife inadvertently ingesting plastics and other items that can harm and kill them; less food waste lying around discourages rats and mice; and all litter not disposed of correctly eventually ends up in our waterways and ultimately, our oceans. Awareness is always the beginning of change, so spread the word about how to treat our wildlife and maybe consider picking up litter in your street or local park (it’s a great way to meet your neighbours and get them involved too!). And I look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming Lake Litter Crew mornings soon!

Forest Lake SHS take S/E Queensland title Forest Lake State High School’s Year 10 Boys Basketball team has won the 2016 South East Queensland Championship. Coach Mustafa Janoowalla took his team to the final rounds as the underdogs and returned as champions. Coach Janoowalla, in his first year of teaching at Forest Lake SHS said, “We have developed a very strong team this year and the dedication and passion the boys have for the game is the reason we won.” The team went through undefeated in the Yagera District with strong wins against Redbank Plains SHS, Glenala SHS and Woodcrest College. The Yagera final was a nail-biter against the very strong Springfield Central SHS. With Springfield leading going into the final seconds, the teams power forward, Ali, made a drive to the basket and scored to even the final at 40 – 40. Being fouled whilst scoring gave Ali one free throw to win the game in normal time. Ali professionally slotted the shot and the Forest Lake boys earned the right to go onto the Metro Finals. The Metro Finals are a knockout competition that pits the best of each school sporting district against each other. This competition normally consists of two knock-out rounds, semifinals and a grand final. It is an achievement for most teams to get past the first round. Coach Janoowalla said, “Forest Lake SHS faced Runcorn SHS in the first round and Runcorn being a school that promotes basketball as part of its curriculum, our boys thought they were not going to make it. Defeating them 39-26 showed our boys they were in with a chance to win the championship.” The second round saw them against Yeronga SHS, another very strong team, winning by just seven points. The semi-final against Brisbane Bayside SHS, and the final against Craigslea SHS were both extremely close games. The Forest Lake SHS team showed their strength and played their best game in the final, winning by 10 points. Ali, a natural leader for the team said, “This was incredible. We never thought we could win the championship. We’ve worked really hard and Coach saw our strengths and taught us to believe in ourselves.” Principal Tom Beck said, “We are extremely proud of our boys. This is only the third Metropolitan/South East Premiership won by Forest Lake SHS. Our Year 8 Girls Volleyball teams have won twice, in 2003 and again in 2014. Forest Lake SHS students have amazing sporting talents on the field and on the court and when they achieve at this level, we know we’re doing something right.”

Your Teeth Your Smile by Dr Paul Holliday To floss or not to floss

Recently, it was announced that flossing was not necessary for good oral care. This isn’t entirely true. It does have some basis which I will explain. First – some basics. Teeth have five surfaces and brushing can only clean three of those. Something else is required to clean the other two. One option is flossing but there are other ways as well. There are real problems with flossing. Apart from the fact that many people don’t floss, if you are not flossing correctly, you can do more harm than good. The gums can be damaged by improper flossing and in this case I agree that you shouldn’t floss. Healthy gums shouldn’t bleed or hurt when flossed. If you haven’t flossed for some time (or at all) then your gums can bleed for a short time while they get accustomed to it but it should not continue to bleed and it shouldn’t hurt. If your gums continue to bleed when flossing, then you may have gum disease or something else causing it and you should definitely get that checked out. If you are too vigorous and they bleed, then you should try and be more gentle. Flossing is supposed to act like a toothbrush. It cleans in between your teeth, removing food debris, bacterial plaque and disrupting the biofilm (bacterial colony) where your toothbrush can’t reach. Prevention is important to protect both teeth and gums. Brushing is only 60% of the solution (maybe 70%). The goal is to help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. These two things are different but preventive hygiene is the same for both. Tooth decay is caused by bacterial metabolism of food particles which results in acid production that destroys tooth structure. Saliva (if you have enough of it) can do a great job at protecting teeth by buffering the acid. Saliva can really get in between teeth and this increases the risk of decay between teeth unless food and plaque is removed regularly. Gum disease, which is generally painless until advanced stages, involves an inflammatory reaction to the bacterial plaque which results in the loss of bone supporting your teeth. Brushing and interdental cleaning helps prevent both these problems. Your dentist is the best person to work out what method would be best in your case. Some people shouldn’t floss and some should. If you are concerned you shouldn’t floss call the friendly team at Lakedental for a consultation.

Forest Lake local, 16 year old Chelsea Hobday knows the meaning of the words commitment and dedication. Training four mornings and five nights a week, Chelsea was rewarded recently when she competed at the 2016 Taekwondo National Championships and won gold, making her the National Junior Champion. This places Chelsea as the National Junior Champion for 2013, 2015 and 2016 and qualifies her to represent Australia at the World Junior Championships next month. Chelsea began her career in martial arts at the age of six with Kung Fu, achieving her black sash in 2010 before turning her focus solely on Taekwondo in 2011. She has won over 190 medals in local, state, national and international competitions. As well as training, Chelsea also co-instructs classes and enjoys assisting students and helping out wherever she can. With the high level of commitment, you’d be forgiven for thinking Chelsea has time for little else, including school work. Chelsea’s dad, Tony says otherwise. “We are very proud of all her sporting achievements and are also pleased to see that Chelsea is very committed to her school life and studies. She has received awards for academic excellence, as well as for her contribution to the school band. She shows great dedication to both school and her sport. “At home she is either studying, stretching, on the treadmill, eating or asleep. Her commitment is inspirational, and to get to where she is now has taken Chelsea 9 years. “Taekwondo is not a sport that is well funded, well not funded at all. All of Chelsea’s competitions and travel are self-funded, or should I say, parent funded! This year alone Chelsea has competed at the US Open where she won bronze, the Canadian Open, coming home with silver, and won gold at the New Zealand Open. As well as competing at many other local and interstate competitions. Chelsea’s ultimate goal is the 2020 Olympics. If you or your business are interested in sponsoring Chelsea, contact Tony on 0403 305 837.

Lake Litter Crew clean up After noticing the increase in litter in Forest Lake over the last 15 years, local resident, Lea decided to do something about it. “A walk by the lake really resonated with me when I noticed plastic bottles floating in the lake around our baby swans, said Lea. “I knew it was time to step up and challenge the mindset that litter was a normal part of our landscape. Lea and her daughter began collecting litter after school and chose just one litter item to focus on - cigarette butts. “After collecting 500 cigarette butts in a very small area, I realised this was going to be a big job. The total amount after a few days reached over 4000 and we stopped counting. I then contacted the Litter Officer at BCC to discuss the idea of a regular litter morning. A regular litter morning is now held on the second Sunday of each month from 9am -11.30am, meeting at the stage area at the lake. Children are welcome and participate in a scavenger hunt that encourages them to collect safe items from a list. On completion, they can choose a small prize and an activity bag that has been supplied by Cr Strunk’s office. Anyone is free to join the litter morning and lend a hand. More details are available by contacting Cr Charles Strunk’s office on 3403 8888.

Grant from Heritage Forest Lake Community Branch helps AFL kids Junior Aussie Rules players in the Forest Lake area can continue enjoying the game they love thanks to a grant from the Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Branch. The Forest Lake Junior AFL Club recently received $4,000 for the purchase of 120 footballs and a marquee, items that will be put to very good use over the coming seasons. Club President Anna O’Donohue said, “We are a not-for-profit sporting organisation that aims to encourage a lifelong enjoyment of exercise in children through Australian Rules Football. “Without this grant we wouldn’t have the equipment needed to support the players from JAFC Dragons so we are very excited and grateful to Heritage Bank Forest Lake for their support.” The 120 club balls funded by the grant will be gradually released, ensuring the club has custom club balls for the next two to three seasons. Meanwhile, the marquee will provide a shaded area allowing young players to get important relief from the sun and heat during breaks Some of this year’s Forest Lake Dragons AFL Under 13 girls in the game. Grand Final winners. (Photo supplied by Forest Lake Dragons JAFC) Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Branch Manager Mark Newman said, “As a Community Branch, a portion of our profits goes back to Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs in the form of grants to deserving local causes and community groups. “It’s such a great feeling to give to groups in the community who support us our branch, especially for some smaller groups who would not be able to get funding anywhere else. You can really see how much they appreciate it.” Some of the branch’s other recent grant recipients include: Grand Avenue State School Outside School Hours Care - $2,274 for various equipment; Forest Lake Netball Club - $2,866 for trophies; PCYC Inala - $10,000 for gym equipment; Meals On Wheels - $850 for Christmas gifts; The Dutch Club - $2,400 for a defibrillator; Lakers Netball Club - $9,234 for a marquee and post pads. Heritage Bank Forest Lake accepts grant applications all year round from community groups in the following areas: Forest Lake, Inala, Durack, Ellen Grove, Heathwood, Doolandella, Pallara, Wacol and Richlands. For more information about the grants or to request an application form, visit Mark and the Heritage Bank Forest Lake team at Forest Lake Shopping Centre or call 3714 9399. More about the Dragons... This was the first year the Dragons had entered an all girls team in the Brisbane AFL Competition. The team lost only two games all season and went on to win the Grand Final last month. Proving that it was the year of girl power, captain of the team, Ashlee Sciortino (left) was awarded the 2016 AFL Queensland’s Girls ‘Best and Fairest’ Award as well as the ‘O’Callaghan Medal’. The O’Callaghan Medal is awarded to the male or female U12-U18 player who received the most points via umpire votes each game. More than 2500 youngsters compete for this medal every year. Forest Lake Area F

Garden Group

by John Prout

With the footy finals out of the way and the weather warming up nicely, there isn’t a better place to be than in the garden. What a great time of the year spring is! October is a huge month in the garden. Isn’t it wonderful to see all the flowers revealing their lovely colours and fragrances and hopefully a couple of surprises? With so much ready to plant, you’ll be struggling to get it all done, however the longer days will assist as well as the weather being not too hot and many wonderful relaxing hours can be spent in our garden. Last month, we set off for our bus trip to see the beautiful Rosevale Garden and Larsen’s Nursery. The Rosevale property was situated on over 300 acres but our group concentrated on the area around the house and the fruit trees behind the house. A few people were a little unnerved to see a snake in one of the fruit trees but it was only a carpet snake and was equally afraid of us. After morning tea, we drove to the Marburg Pub for lunch. The owners opened up especially for our group as they do not usually open for meals on Tuesdays. Lunch was delicious and afterwards a few people hit the antique stores for a browse. We then moved on to Larsen’s Nursery to hear a history of the property and the devastation caused by floods in recent years. It was another successful bus trip and there were many tired but happy faces at the end of the day. On Saturday 15 October, Angela Naumann will open her garden from 2 – 4pm. Full details at the next meeting. It is always an enjoyable afternoon and we have the opportunity to get together and have a chat. We all like native birds visiting our gardens and plant many trees, shrubs and bushes to attract them. But what about another colourful guest we can invite? There are many species and colours of the butterfly. To attract butterflies to live and breed in your garden, all you have to do is to grow plants with flowers that produce nectar for the adults or food plants for caterpillars. Remember, every butterfly was once a caterpillar, so you must be prepared to accept some chewed leaves, however, birds and predatory insects will usually keep their numbers under control. This month’s guest speaker will be Carol Kerkin giving us all the secrets on having a successful cottage garden. I’m sure Carol will have some plants for sale. In November our meeting clashes with that popular race in Melbourne. We will have a hat competition for the ladies and gents. There will be time to attend our meeting even if you are going to a function in the afternoon. The guest speaker will be Geoff Robinson talking on the daylilies. Don’t miss either meeting and see you there! We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

Next meeting Tuesday, 4 October at 9.30 for a 10am start. The Dutch Club, 123 Pine Rd, Richlands. For more information call John Prout on 3288 3131.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update by Marge Breitenbach

A number of Forest Lake Probians attended lunch at the Oxley Golf Club to celebrate the 40th birthday of Probus International. At Club level, two more new members were inducted. A very special welcome to Margaret and John G. The Dinner Club, the Coffee Club and the Book group seem to be gathering more support from members. The ‘Gastronomes’ meet the first Thursday of the month, the ‘baristas’ the fourth Tuesday and the ‘bookworms’ the fourth Wednesday at 1pm at the Inala Library where tea and coffee is also provided. The monthly guest speaker was Blake Mulo from Queensland Rail. The topic was ‘Discover Queensland Rail Travel’. Queensland Rail is Australia’s largest and most comprehensive rail network. As Blake’s audience consisted mostly of seniors, he spent some time explaining the Concession Entitlements available. Then followed details of trips. These included The Spirit of Queensland which travels from Brisbane to Townsville and Cairns; The Spirit of the Outback departs Brisbane for Longreach; and then of course there is the Tilt Train, The Westlander and The Inlander. The fleet of Queensland trains allows a person to travel to many coastal towns as well as outback regions and beyond. Each Probian was given a copy of the 2016/17 Queensland Rail Holiday Brochure where more details are available and what packages are on offer. Liz passed the vote of thanks. This month, there is a trip to the Beenleigh Rum Distillery and lunch at Harrigans and in November, the Club will be visiting an Olive farm. There is always something to look forward to at Probus. The Club is extending an invitation to retirees and semiretirees to pay us a visit to come and enjoy fun, fellowship and friendship. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at the Forest Lake Community Hall, College Avenue at 10am. Further details are available from Membership Officer Shirley on 3879 9421 or President John on 3372 1270. Looking forward to meeting new faces! Page 12 - October 2016 - The Lake News

What led you to start Allstars 20 years ago? I had a dance studio in NZ before shifting to Australia. I have been dancing since I was 6 years old, primarily in tap and ballet dance. I specialised in tap and song and dance and I’ve been involved in musical theatre and production all of my life. What are you most proud of at Allstars Performing Arts? Our students. We have an incredibly family orientated studio. There’s something about a love of music and movement that brings everyone together, no matter what our backgrounds or culture are. Dance is a vehicle for many things. To many, we are a second home. We teach discipline, responsibility, teamwork. We supply love, support and security and we help develop confidence. Highlights of the last 20 years? I have been the stage manager and program co-ordinator of the Forest Lake Community Carols for most of this time. Carols is definitely a highlight for me every year. The other highlight would be the creation of Spectacular Event Management. I’ve been involved in event management all my life. Through this company, I want to raise money for children who have less and to educate our students about ‘giving back’. Our yearly musicals are managed through this company and we also held our first Dance Spectacular this year. The Dance Spectacular is a showcase of up to 10 dance studios who perform for 10 minutes each in an action packed high energy concert to raise money for children’s charity. Our next one will be held in Forest Lake. Are you excited about the move to the Lighthouse Events centre? Yes! From the minute I met Ps Joshua about an alternative concert venue, I just knew it would be our new home. The amount of space gives us room to grow and to offer additional classes. Acoustic walls will divide the open studio space into 3-4 separate studio spaces. The location is brilliant, with onsite parking and a relaxing area for our families. The Auditorium has a seating capacity of up to 1000 people for dance concerts, presentations, corporate events etc. It is multi functional and can be transferred into an area suitable for weddings and special celebrations and can cater food for special events too. It is also used as a worship Centre for the Hosannah Church Brisbane. Samoan, Indian and African congregations have regular services at the Centre. Information on worship services can be obtained from the Hosanna Church Facebook page. With the cafe soon to be up and running, there are also plans for community events and spaces such as movie nights, a daycare centre and craft markets.

Monthly Update

by Les Brooks

Last month, 42 members of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club gathered at Roma Street Railway Station to board The Spirit of the Outback to Longreach. The Minister for Transport Stirling Hinchliffe MP and our local Member for Algester Leeanne Enoch MP were present to meet our group and farewell us. The train trip was fabulous with great scenery and lots of good humour amongst our group. On arrival at Longreach we were met by Aussie Outback Tours who looked after our program for the week. There were many exciting venues and activities including The Stockman’s Hall of Fame for a show and dinner where we were welcomed to the district by the Mayor of Longreach Shire, Mayor Ed Warren. Our program included visits to Longreach School of Distance Education, Qantas Founders Museum, and the Wellshot Hotel at Ilfracombe for a great show and dinner. A highlight was a trip out to the Australian Age of Dinosaurs, in Winton including The Waltzing Matilda Centre. Back at Longreach, our Club presented a donation to the Rev. Jenny Coomber of the Western Queensland Drought Association, which was gratefully accepted. Wednesday was also a full day with a visit out to Strathmore Station. Our planned visit to The Stockman’s Hall of Fame was unfortunately not possible due to a major power failure. While this was disappointing, we took the opportunity to relax back at the motel in preparation for our Drover’s Sunset Cruise on the Thompson River, which included dinner and the live Smithy’s Outback Show, which was a real highlight of our visit to Longreach. What a spectacular sunset Mother Nature put on for us just to cap off a great day. All good things must come to an end, and on Thursday it was time to pack up and make our way to the station and board the Spirit of the Outback for our trip home to Brisbane after a truly fabulous and memorable trip to Outback Australia. A special thank you goes to Annastacia Palaszczuk MP for the donation towards the cost of our lunch at the Qantas Founders Museum. For the members who were unable to go to Longreach, they enjoyed a trip to the Mt. Coot-tha Café and Gardens followed by a lunch at the Blue Fin Club. This month, the Club’s ‘Extra Activity‘ was held at the Coffee Club at Forest Lake on September 14th for a breakfast with over forty members attending. As usual there was a lot of good humour and in particular, stories about our trip to Longreach. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. New members are most welcome. For more information on the Club and its activities, please contact Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mob 0466 377 618 to register your interest, email fl50plusc@gmail.com. Date claimers for the next three meetings are October 21st, November 18th & 20th January 2017.

FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y

It’s been a busy month throughout the electorate with beautiful winter skies making for some terrific events and activities. We’re fortunate to live in such a vibrant community, and that neighbourhood spirit was on show with huge attendances at the Grand Ave SS Fete and the 9th annual ‘Welcoming the Babies’ ceremony Durack SS where we welcomed our 1,000th baby. It seems like only yesterday that we held our first ceremony back in 2008 when I was councillor for Richlands and it’s great to see my good friends Cr Charles Struck and Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MP along with the South West Richlands Progress Association making the event bigger and better than ever. Congratulations also go to 15 aspiring young athletes who each received $500 towards their sporting pursuits recently through the Local Sporting Champions grant. It’s great to see the huge sporting talent we have in our community as the athletes and their parents joined in a celebratory afternoon tea at the electorate office. It was inspiring to see the hard work and dedication of the recipients and we wish them all the best as they chase their sporting dreams in athletics, rowing, gymnastics, ice hockey and other sports across the country later this year. The next round of the Local Sporting Champions grant is open now with applications closing on October 31; apply through the www.aussport.gov.au website. You can stay up to date on upcoming events, activities and everything else happening in the electorate at www. miltondick.com.au or feel free to call my office anytime on 3879 6440. There needs to be a plan to control both external and internal parasites for all pets, not only for their sake, but for their owners. The most common known external parasites are ticks, fleas, lice and mites. There is an incredible variety of internal parasites, the most common being stomach worms such as round, hook, whip and tape worms. Heart and lung worms are the most common of the other worms that live outside of the intestines. When deciding on the best way to control these annoying creatures owners need to consider the following: • Are your pets inside or outside? This mainly applies to cats but isolated inside pets are less exposed to parasites. Inside pets can still be exposed to parasites by contact with pets in the same household who go outside. • Do your pets hunt? This mainly applies to cats again but eating lizards, birds, rats and mice will give your pets certain types of worm infections. For example, eating lizards will give pets tape worm and eating rats and mice will cause round worm infections. • If your pets are outside, do they mix with other pets? For example fleas will easily jump from one pet to another and fleas give your pet tapeworm infections. Also, pets that visit areas where other pets defecate are very prone to picking up intestinal worm infections. • Is your pet exposed to mosquitos that carry heartworm? The answer is yes if your pets go outside and possibly if they are inside. • Do you live in an area where there are ticks? We have both bush and paralysis ticks in this area, so it is a consideration for Forest Lake residents. • Are your pets easy to medicate? If they are not, long acting products and spot ons are easier options. • Will I remember? Choosing long acting products with reminder systems in place is a very sensible option. If you are still not sure what your pet needs, discuss your options with a veterinary staff member. There are many product options available for many different situations.

You may wonder what the Lions Club of Forest Lake get up to. On Saturday 10th September we provided labour for the Forest Lake State School Fete. It was a very busy day and it was good to see so many people lined up for burgers and sausages. Even though it rained, our dedicated Lions managed to get the cooking done to feed the hungry hordes! We also distributed fruit plates to the gentlemen at the Forest Lake Lodge. It is always a special occasion to visit the residents of the Lodge and have a chat and a laugh. We have to thank Lions Sharon Hartig as she is the organiser for these visits. We all enjoy our visits and it is nice to see the friendly faces (hi to Janice if you’re reading this!) welcoming us. We will be holding a Halloween themed trivia night, all welcome but bookings are essential. The trivia night will be held at Community House, Saturday night, 29 October. Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Welcome to our October edition. Glorious weather this time of the year. Important information - due to renovations and availability of our usual meeting room at Lions Soccer Club we have been asked to change our meeting dates for October (Thursday 13th) and November (Thursday 10th). Meeting Place - Lions Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands. 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Meeting entry includes morning tea. To our members who are unwell or recovering from surgery, we extend our very best wishes for a return to good health. At the September meeting we enjoyed a light brunch and welcomed the new Management Committee with three new members coming on board. The Farmer’s Father’s Day Appreciation Packs were sent out to St George in the Balonne Shire just before Father’s Day. The farmers who received their packs were over the moon that their city friends have thought of them. A very big thank you to all who contributed. Those who travelled out to Longreach are still talking about the great time they had. The itinerary organised through National Seniors Travel was packed with wonderful things for us to do. We highly recommend this trip. The weather was terrific, fresh mornings and evenings but we were well prepared. The Spirit of the Outback train journey was very comfortable. Very nice meals and lots of laughs in the Tucker Box car. One of the many highlights included a visit to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame. A wonderful tribute. There’s nothing better than country hospitality like the sunset dinner evening at Camden Park Station. Great hosts and of course a beautiful sunset. To round off a very busy month in August a large group headed down to the Wynnum foreshore to enjoy a picnic lunch. Many purchased the freshly cooked seafood from a local shop whilst some packed their own very interesting picnic lunches. Morning tea was a delight with some of our great bakers bringing along delicious cakes and slices which we enjoyed with our tea and coffee. Lots more events are planned for the rest of the year including another of our popular away trips, this time to the Ballina/Yamba region. Check out our website www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au/ and for further information about our Branch please contact either Julie 3278 7274 or Val 3372 4405.

Forest Lake Rotary Club update by Jeff Jones - President. As we move forward into October 2016 we are excited in the fact that we, the Forest Lake Rotary Club, have served the people of Forest Lake and the wider community for 20 years. Yes, 20 years. Many of the founding members are still active in the club. We will be celebrating this important occasion on Sunday 30th October. We will have a light meal at Rotary House Goodna, enjoying the fellowship of Rotary, family, friends and invited guests. As Alan mentioned in last month’s news, we are only a small club but a very efficient one. We run BBQ’s, are involved with the Christmas Carols by Candlelight, Dragon Boat Festival and many other community matters. With this in mind we would welcome any member of the local community who wishes to join us as a member or even a volunteer who can give up a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday. If you can help in anyway please contact either, Bob on 0412 982 566, or Alan on 3271 3358. During September, Forest Lake Rotary Club helped organise a Citizenship Ceremony of massive proportions, where 2000 new citizens were officially welcomed to our beautiful country. Many people still look at us as a small club but we are part of a bigger organisation, and when there is a problem within the world, Rotary acts. We don’t have boundaries, we just get out there and do it. Rotary is responsible for nearly the total eradication of Polio, a crippling disease that killed 1000s, that one project is now saving thousands of lives across the world. Don’t you want to be part of that great community spirit? Work to help humanity, work on a project that you think of that will help others, your project with the support of 1000s from across the world. We will be conducting a BBQ on both Saturdays and Sundays during October. If you want to help Phone Bob 0412 982 566, anybody that helps on the day will enjoy a complimentary sausage and a cold drink. Come and chat to us. Page 22 - October 2016 - The Lake News

The Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club celebrated the end of Season 2016 with competitive final matches, a successful participation in the Kenmore Junior Carnival and, the highlight of the calendar, their annual Trophy Day. Patron Cr Angela Owen was on hand to present the two perpetual trophies she established for the club, Team of the Year (to the U6s) and Club Player of the Year (to Bradley Smith). Cr Charles Strunk, having generously donated this year’s trophies, presented Most Improved and Player of the Season to each team, while Hon. Leanne Enoch was also in attendance to present our smallest (and cutest!) players, the Little Stingers, with their trophies. Our newly elected Federal representative, Hon. Milton Dick, appropriately presented the Volunteer of the Year award to John Nuendorf. The strength of the Wasps is its grassroots community connections, dedicated volunteers and enthusiastic and committed players and families. All were on show on this special day. Now the club has moved its equipment to storage space in the new Community Hall, thanks to Brisbane City Council. It is time for the summer sports to have their time in the sun! The Wasps share their clubhouse and fields with Little Athletics, who are expecting a bumper season in this Olympic Year, to cap off successful State and National representation last year. Registrations are now open for Little Athletics, another encouraging club with a strong coaching foundation that benefits children in a whole host of ways. But mostly it’s about fun! For sign on details, visit the FLLAC website: www. forestlake.littleas.com.au. ICHLANDS SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY ROSELLA

E

While most of the Richlands-Forest Lake Scout Group took advantage of the September holidays to rest up ready for Term 4, one of our Venturers, Lucas, spent a week at Samford helping out at Agoonoree. Agoonoree is a camp hosted by Scouts Qld each September school holidays for young people with special needs. Hundreds of Scouts, Venturers and Rovers volunteer to help run activities, help with prep/ planning or join in Troop lines with their guests to show them what Scouting is all about. They get to camp, abseil, do water activities, campfire, and night activities are also put on to entertain them. Lucas, Connor and our little cub, Lucy, were also busy rehearsing and performing for the Limestone Scout District performances of Limestone Revue. This years performance was a musical production based around Robin Hood and his band of merry men. We can’t wait to get back this week and take advantage of the warm weather to get back into our fun filled programs. Just some of the things in store this term are Air Activity camps for our younger sections, water activity camp for our Scout section, a visit to the Science Centre and Southbank, Planet Commando plus many other activities both in our den and away from it. Our committee are just about to kick off our last fundraiser for the year plantable Christmas cards. Each card is embedded with seeds, so that at the end of the season the recipient can plant them and have a lasting memento instead of Director Kate Green with more landfill. Scout Connor McLaughlin. Anybody interested in more information regarding youth or adult membership, or coming to try Scouting out, please contact Rosella on 0402 308 182 or email richlandsscoutgroup@gmail.com.

Caring for our local wildlife

by Ian Gorrie

Most people are drawn to wildlife and try to get as close to them as they can. Studies all over the world have shown that people find wildlife encounters fascinating and feeding can often be the easiest option to make this happen, especially in their own back yard. Despite this, wildlife, including ducks and other birds in residence at the lake, should not be fed unless it is by an experienced carer rearing orphaned wildlife or sick and injured wildlife. These dedicated people work with National Parks and Wildlife and have the authority and experience to do this without causing problems. Feeding wildlife inappropriately causes many complex issues ranging from illness to social and behavioural problems.

If you wish to interact with wildlife, I would suggest the following: • In your own yard you can create your own wildlife habitat. Grow native plants that provide nectar-rich flowers, fruits and leaves that local wildlife will feed on. In time, these plants will form part of a wildlife-friendly garden that provides patches of shelter and habitat for native birds, mammals, reptiles, frogs and invertebrates. Add a comfortable seat to watch from and you can start to enjoy watching some of your local wildlife in a safe and friendly way. • Know your local area or know national parks where specific wildlife is likely to be and when it will be active. This often requires time and patience and a good set of binoculars. • If you interact with wildlife, make sure your pet dogs and cats are not endangering them. There are many wildlife organizations and, of course, the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service, who can advise you on situations you may encounter or if you wish to become a carer.

Forest Lake Friendship Group If you’re new to Forest Lake, or just want to extend your social network, this is a great opportunity to meet new people, make friends and enjoy some friendly conversation. 4th October:

Coffee at Jamaica Blue, Mt Ommaney 10.30am RSVP by 3rd October - 0409 789 625

Forest Lake residents are thrilled to again see Pisiconto the Dragon operating in the Lake Parklands, it has been two years since the fountain water feature has been in operation. Many residents have contacted me to say their morning and afternoon walks are extra special now that Pisiconto is back in action again! I have seen many photos being shared on Facebook by residents. I recently took a photo and uploaded it onto my Facebook page, feel free to like, comment and share it. I would also like to acknowledge the Brisbane City Council team, residents and local businesses that work tirelessly to keep our ward clean and tidy. It is also great to hear that residents are contacting the ward office to voice their concerns. As a result our ward is improving and it continues to improve. Council Crews recently completed the removal of sediment from the Lake fringes. Officers monitor the levels of accumulated sediment regularly and remove when it is warranted. Council has recently repaired some erosion that was occurring at the lower section where the Cascades meet the main Lake. I’m also in discussions at the moment with community and relevant groups with the hope of having a planting day in the Lake Parklands. We had a very successful planting day with our local scouts in Kev Hooper Park a few weeks ago. Stay tuned for more details or feel free to contact the ward office if you would like to assist. It has been brought to my attention that snakes are out and about in our ward. I ask that people take caution, please do not go within five meters of a snake and please don’t try to remove or harm the snake. If a snake is seen resting on or in a playground for more than 30 minutes, please report it to the Council 3403 8888 or call my ward office at 3407 1211. I would like to congratulate the Forest Lake State School for hosting another fun event, despite the rain. I was please to be joined by the Primer Hon. Annastacia Palaszczuk and Milton Dick Federal Member for Oxley. We had a great time meeting and supporting the school, P&C and students. I would also like to acknowledge Sue Gibbons and the Forest Lake Crochet and Knitting group, who are really going above and beyond for our community at the moment. This talented, multicultural group meet every Thursday at the Community Hall at Settlers Village, Forest Lake to make unique one-off gifts to donate to well deserving causes. If you’re interested in joining the group, have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Forest Lake Ward office on 3407 1211. As always, If you have any questions or need assistance please do not hesitate to contact the Forest Lake Ward office on 3407 1211.

WITH DAVE JOHNSON B. COM C.A.

Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues

The other morning I purchased a coffee en route to work and had a chuckle reading the joke of the day at the barista’s shop: “I went back to the supermarket the other day and exchanged a kilogram of raisins for 500 grams of sultanas. I can’t believe the currant exchange rate these days! For those of you with monetary investments, and basically that includes most people with superannuation, small or large, there is a fair chance that you are exposed without realising it to the vagaries of exchange rates due to some of those funds being allocated to international investments. For those with some investments more specifically targeted to overseas markets, perhaps through investments in international shares, bonds or property funds, the significance of exchange rates plays an even larger role. Take an example of an international fund that has a 100% exposure to the American share market. Perhaps the Dow Jones has risen 20% since you acquired the investment a year ago but the Australian dollar has risen from 0.75 to 0.90 against the greenback over the same period. One might initially expect the investment to be showing a 20% return. However, due to the decline in the US$ versus the A$ of similar magnitude, the net return is, in fact, zero. Of course, it could have been the other way around. If the A$ had dropped 20% the American portfolio of shares becomes a much healthier 50% over the year. The Dow Jones went up, and its value in A$ terms was even greater due to the relative strength of the US$. The key issue is awareness of the impact on risk. For those who are risk averse, you may want to look at an international share fund which hedges its currency exposure to some degree, or perhaps one which spans multiple currencies. Although the A$ is perhaps a relatively stable currency in the main, it is worth noting that it has been as low as US$0.48 in April 2001 and as high as US$1.10 in July 2011. Of course no one knows where exchange rates may go from one day to the next. As one stockbroker once quipped, “Tomorrow the stockmarket might be up, but on the other hand it might be down. The same can be said about exchange rates.

Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling

The Forest Lake Social Golf Club had two games in September at Brookwater and at Oxley. Brookwater was the Jim Wilson Memorial Cup day with a great attendance of 29 players. Everyone was looking forward to this game all year, and while the course had 16 temporary greens in play, it didn’t diminish the enjoyment we all had from playing this course, which was in otherwise perfect condition. The weather on the day was perfect which made up for the tiny temporary greens, which had very challenging pin placements. Nevertheless, there was some pretty good scores carded with several members returning sub-par rounds on the day. Two great shows on offer this month at Ipswich Civic Centre

shake & stir theatre co are bringing their award-winning Australian play, Tequila Mockingbird to Ipswich Civic Centre for one show only on Tuesday 18 October. Featuring the original stellar cast, including Barbara Lowing, Bryan Probets, Nelle Lee, Nick Skubij, Ross Balbuziente and Shannon Haegler, and directed by Michael Futcher Tequila Mockingbird visits themes of racial prejudice, the perversion of justice and the consequences of alcohol abuse, all in a uniquely Australian context. Nominated for six Matilda Awards in 2014 and winner of Best Mainstage Production and collected three coveted Gold Matilda Awards - this is a bold, brave work examining a darker side of Australian culture lurking just below the surface which The Australian garnered “OUTSTANDING.” After a woman is attacked in a remote Australian town, the racist underbelly rears its head as the community targets a young Indian doctor who recently relocated to the area. Only one local man possesses the strength to uncover the truth and defend the accused in the ultimate fight for what’s right, but first, he must take care of other matters a little closer to home. “Tequila Mockingbird has been a cherished production for shake & stir since 2013; it commenced a dialogue with our audiences surrounding racial issues and we want it to be seen by more Australians, and given the terrifying recent increase in atrocities fuelled by discrimination – it’s more important than ever,” said shake & stir’s Artistic Director, Ross Balbuziente. Book online at www.Ipswichciviccentre.com.au or by calling 3810 6100. Tickets cost $32 for an adult, and $27 for concession.

Grab the girls on Friday 7th October and leave the kids at home so you can reminisce about your childhood BFF: your DOLL. Babushka: DOLL will star Alicia Cush, Bethan Ellsmore and Judy Hainsworth, who are coming to nurse dolls, break dolls and become dolls in a crazed and cutesy cabaret that brings you a taste of everything from Guns’n’Roses to opera. This frenzy of fuchsia is a riotous celebration of our playthings, our challenges as women in this ‘day and age’ and the ability to be our own hero. These potty-mouthed Polly Pockets are not afraid to go for broke when it comes to consumerism, gender-bias, the pressure to be a good mum and to look damn fabulous while you’re at it. Babushka has an excellent formula for taking both wellknown and obscure songs and completely re-imagining them, creating stunning and often hilarious moments. Coupled with their blazing individual personalities and a knack for idiosyncratic humour, you have the recipe for an enthralling, sidesplitting piece of theatre. Audiences can expect the unexpected, with bizarre musical mash-ups and a fantastically feminine production with a truly dirty mind. These incredible singers bring every inch of their stunning voices and performance skills to deliver a high-energy, uplifting and hilarious show that has real meat on its bones. Babushka: Doll is a cabaret creation that’s simply not to be missed. Starting at 7.30pm on Friday 7th October, tickets cost $25 per person and can be purchased online at www. ipswichciviccentre.com.au or by calling 3810 6100.

FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update

by Alan Greig g

Almost 6,000 Australians served in Vietnam, including 13 members of our RSL Sub-branch. To honour these men and women, we held a special luncheon at the Richlands Tavern Hotel which also commemorated the Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan on August 18th. Of the 6,000 who served in Vietnam, more than 3,500 casualties were experienced including 521 who paid the supreme sacrifice. As a nation, it is timely for us to continue to pay our Vietnam Veterans the respect they deserve. One of our sub-branch members, Bob Richards is our trained advocate in matters affecting former members of the Australian Defence Force. Should any ex service person need advocacy or advice they should contact Secretary Peter Foley (0412 357 756) who will put the inquirer in touch with Bob. Bob was also our guest speaker at the September meeting of the Sub-branch and spoke on the topic of “WAR DOGS and their involvement in the Australian Defence Forces”. Attendees at our ANZAC Day ceremonies may have noticed that members of the Rotary Club of Forest Lake assist the RSL Sub-branch in organising parking arrangements. The Rotary Club requested that our members help them out with the Citizenship Ceremony that was held at the Calamvale Community School on September 17th and 18th. More than 4,000 new citizens became Australians. The RSL has been seeking its own premises for some time and matters look like coming to fruition in the not too distant future. The Sub-branch has been conducting negotiations with another organisation with the view to having its own office and meeting rooms. More about this move will be available after the agreement has been signed. The Lake News - October 2016 - Page 27
