With the footy finals out of the way and the weather warming up nicely, there isn’t a better place to be than the garden. October is a huge month in the garden. With so much ready to plant, you’ll be struggling to get it all done, however the longer days will assist as well as the weather being not too hot and many wonderful relaxing hours can be spent in our garden. Isn’t it wonderful to see all the flowers revealing their lovely colours, shapes and fragrances? What a great time of the year spring is!

This month we celebrate our 20th year as a garden club. Not sure how many members can recall the first year when meetings were held at member’s homes. Today our membership is currently over eighty mainly due to changing the meetings to the morning instead of the evening. I’m sure the club will progress for another 20 years.

Last month was a busy one with morning tea at Donelle’s Roses and Denis and Jenny White opened their garden for members to explore, enjoy an afternoon tea and we were able to catch up with fellow members. Also last month our guest speaker was Barry Kable advising us on orchids. Barry has a vast knowledge on orchids and was recently on Gardening Australia displaying his 6,500 + orchids to Costa Georgiadis.

Although most of us live in suburbia, some members are having problems with bush turkeys. Seems some residents have recently been visited by at least one bush turkey. It is the male that is destroying gardens and lawns as with his scratching he is making a nest to impress a female turkey.

They appear to like the ‘new garden’ you have finished making as the soil is fresh. The big question seems to be ‘how can we stop him?’ Unfortunately there is no easy answer as bush turkeys are a protected species under current government laws. Chicken wire placed over the area will assist in many cases. I would be interested to hear if you have a logical and lawful solution to this problem.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Recently, my daughter and I went to see Joshua Radin, an American singer/songwriter, at a small venue in Westend. It started out fine; with the help of google maps, we found our way to the general area (I’m afraid I’m terribly suburban and don’t venture into the city very often!). Once there, we had difficulty finding the actual venue. If you know Westend at all, you’ll know that parking is in short supply, so after parking in a secure parking spot, it was a bit of a walk to find the place.

We walked and then drove up and down the same street for what seemed an age. At one point we both seriously considered just sitting down at one of the many restaurants and forgetting about the show altogether. Eventually, after driving up a tiny side street, we saw two burly bouncers outside an open door and discovered this was the place!

There was no signage. And by that, I mean, no signage at all. From the front, the building looked abandoned, which was why we had passed it so many times without realising it was what we were looking for. By the time we found it, my daughter had blisters and we were both feeling a bit cranky about the wasted hour trying to find where we were meant to be. Once inside, our mood brightened and we settled in to enjoy the artist we both love. We ended up having a fantastic night and the story of our mishaps before the show are already something we laugh about, our annoyance and sore feet all forgotten.

It struck me later how often in life we give up looking for something when the signs aren’t clear, or non existent, as in our case that evening! Even though we may have already invested in a pursuit (just as my daughter and I had already bought tickets), it can be tempting to abandon the goal when it’s unclear where to go.

And if we find ourselves being tempted to give up, it can be useful to look at the goal and whether it’s what we really want. You see, we both really, really, really wanted to see this artist, so we were determined to find where he was. When we set goals, if our motivation isn’t right, it can be our undoing when it gets tough. If we set our goals according to other’s standards or expectations, often that isn’t enough to get us over the line.

I read a great quote the other day, “If you really want to do something, you will find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.� (Jim Rohn) It’s true isn’t it? And I think the crucial part is in the ‘you’ - if the goal is propelled by the right motivation, in other words, if you own it, you’re far more likely to succeed.

Sometimes, just like our night out, we are in the right area but there’s nothing pointing us to exactly the right spot.

I wonder if that is often just as it should be...do we have what it takes, the right motivation, to not give up until we have the exact thing we went to that area for. The absence of clarity doesn’t always mean it’s a lost cause, often, it just means we need to look a little harder, dig a little deeper and be prepared to knock on a few doors that seem to be abandoned buildings before finding success.

Stop The Traffik’s Fashion Exchange will be focusing on who the real fashion victims are in our world; the women, children and men who make our clothes in conditions akin to modern slavery.

Stop The Traffik Australia’s coordinator, Carolyn Kitto, said “Since the terrible accidents in garment factories, people expect their clothes suppliers to know what is happening in their supply chain.

The level of concern in the community has escalated and people are using their consumer power to demand answers to their questions. They don’t want the person who made their clothes to be a victim for our fashion desires.”

A great way to break the cycle of abuse and to send a message that we want fashion to be traffik-free is to recycle loved clothes. For each item of clothing participants bring, they will receive a token to swap for another item of clothing.

Whilst participants are grabbing themselves a new wardrobe, they will also be able to listen to speakers, be entertained by local belly-dancers, purchase from Fair Trade Association suppliers of clothes and accessories and view a documentary on the Sumangali bonded labour scheme which operates in Spinning and Weaving mills in India, the source of most of the worlds cotton knitted fabric. Your dentist takes x-rays of your teeth and gums because they help in discovering and diagnosing any problems you may have.

Many problems in the mouth can’t be seen by the eye. A digital image or an x-ray film will assist them.

The majority of dentists in Australia use film to take their x-rays but the popularity of digital imaging is increasing. Digital systems offer some excellent advantages, such as greatly reduced radiation exposure; faster processing; images that can be manipulated and stored on your dentist’s computer; there are also environmental benefits because chemical film processing and disposal has been eliminated.

The need for an x-ray depends on such factors as how susceptible you are to decay, whether there are other problems in the mouth, whether the position of the teeth needs to be altered and for planning restorative treatment. From childhood to adolescence, generally about six x-rays are needed. Adults need x-rays at least every two years to check for decay and gum disease.

You should not be concerned about radiation from x-rays because your dentist follows very strict guidelines to ensure your safety.

There are three main types of x-rays: bitewing, periapical and panoramic. Bitewings shows the upper and lower teeth. Periapical shows the whole tooth including the root and surrounding tissues.

Panoramic shows the teeth and jaws.

There are a number of situations where the use of x-rays may be necessary for correct diagnosis and proper treatment. They include: Decay: An x-ray may be the best way of finding decay between teeth, or under old or leaking fillings or crowns.

Gum disease: An x-ray allows your dentist to assess the extent of damage to the bone caused by periodontal disease.

Wisdom teeth: An x-ray of a wisdom tooth allows your dentist to assess the area for possible sources of trouble in the removal procedure.

Root canal treatment: Problems associated with the nerves of teeth may be difficult to assess without x-rays.

Accidents: An x-ray by your dentist can determine the extent of damage caused by injuries to teeth and jaws.

Orthodontics: An x-ray by your dentist shows the position of the teeth before treatment; and helps determine where their proper position should be.

TMJ/ Occlusion Dysfunction: An x-ray shows the position and anatomy of the jaw joints and whether there is any problem associated with the TMJ. Don’t be scared of x-rays, they show how good your teeth and gums are on the inside.

The Forest Lake Crochet group recently met for lunch at Richlands Tavern to celebrate their second anniversary as a group.

Over 40 women, and one or two men, enjoyed the lively camaraderie that comes from meeting together nearly every week for two years.

The group, that meets at Settler’s Forest Lake every Thursday morning from 9am til noon, have donated countless crocheted and knitted items to many groups and causes throughout the last two years. This year in particular, the group has collaborated with other local clubs to assist the drought affected farmers in St George, which has been greatly appreciated.

Sue Gibbens, founder and organiser of the crochet group is grateful for all the wool that has been donated, ensuring the group always has the means to continue crocheting and knitting for those in need.

The recent production of Thoroughly Modern Millie by Allstars Performing Arts was the musical treatment of the 1967 movie of the same name. The story traces the journey of Millie, from simply country girl to chic city independent woman. Along the way, she runs into different characters that either help or hinder her cause and ends up finding true love in an unlikely place.

With 36 cast members, this rendition of an old favourite was executed to perfection and included well designed sets, fabulous costumes and, of course, wonderful dancing and singing.

Joining the other 500 plus patrons gathered at the beautiful St John’s Anglican College Hall, we went as a family and our girls just loved it. We were all so impressed with the professionalism of the production, especially knowing it was a one night only show and that the cast had only 11 weeks to rehearse, on top of all their normal classes and eisteddfod practices.

It seemed no detail was overlooked; the authentic costumes were in keeping with the 1920s theme of the story, the stage was uncluttered but expertly dressed to give a strong sense of place for each scene and the dancing was an absolute joy to watch - precision timing, energy and choreography that was in keeping with the 1920s style.

Overall, it was a wonderful night out that we thoroughly enjoyed. We’re already looking forward to next years production of Alice in Wonderland!

Our movie and theatre group have enjoyed some special events in September including a very funny movie A Walk in the Woods at our favourite cinema.

How proud our members who completed their first aid training in August were when they were presented with their Certificates by Mr Charles Strunk on behalf of the Premier. There will be opportunities for future training and refreshment of knowledge too. Once again we say how very grateful our Branch is for the donation from Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk which went towards the cost of running the training session. We are fortunate enough to have a defibrillator and well stocked first aid kit which we bring to our meetings and take on trips as well.

Meeting date for October is Wednesday 14th at Lions Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands, 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Meeting entry includes morning tea. It’s a themed meeting with everyone invited to come dressed ‘Country Style’ with entertainment on offer too.

September was a busy month with our Chinatown Tour and Stradbroke Island coach trip. At the time of writing this article a group of members were headed up to Hervey Bay for a great train trip, two overnight stays and of course Whale Watching.

A large group of travellers spent several days touring around the Goulburn region visiting some of the lovely townships and their special attractions. A trip to the National Capital was also on the itinerary.

Coming up at the end of this month is our member BBQ at the lake which includes a sausage sizzle and fun filled games also on the agenda. This is always a great get together.

On the first Tuesday in November, an enthusiastic group of members will be off to enjoy all the fun of Melbourne Cup. A great opportunity for dressing up and perhaps win a sweep or two.

Also coming up on our busy calendar at the end of November is a planned three day bus trip exploring Warwick and surrounding beautiful places of interest.

This October, what are you doing for you?

October is breast cancer awareness month, time to raise awareness and money to fund vital breast cancer research, support and education programs.

It is also a time for women to make a pledge to themselves to put their own breast health first and make time to attend for their free breastscreen.

A breastscreen is the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before a woman or her doctor can feel anything. Finding breast cancer early provides women with the best possible chance of successful treatment and recovery.

Breast cancer is still the most common cancer diagnosed among women with one in eight Queensland women developing breast cancer at some stage in their life.

Most women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 50 and have no family history of the disease.

BreastScreen Queensland has been providing quality, world-class breast cancer screening services to Queensland women for over 20 years and is the only nationally accredited breast cancer screening service in the state.

All women aged between 50 and 74 years are strongly encouraged to have a free breastscreen every two years.

Women aged 40 to 49 and over 75 are also eligible to attend.

The breastscreen is done in private with a female radiographer and a doctor’s referral is not necessary.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update

On Tuesday the 18th August, The Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc went to visit the beautiful Ormiston House. With delicious Devonshire Tea being enjoyed on the verandah, the view to Moreton Bay was spectacular as the weather was perfect. Members were divided into groups of ten and taken around the Homestead by volunteer guides who gave a running commentary, not just on the Homestead, but the history of Captain Hope, his family and the contents of the House. The guides displayed exceptional knowledge as some were retired school teachers and have been doing this for twenty years. A point of interest was that the Captain actually was responsible for building the first Sugar Mill in Queensland where he employed Kanaka labour.

Leaving behind the history and culture of our State, it was then off to lunch at the Redlands RSL where Probians imbued in a glass of wine accompanied by a scrumptious meal. Bus driver Nathan then took the members on a short exploratory drive to Cleveland Point for some fresh sea air. The Bay looked inviting and beautiful and it was a perfect end to a lovely day.

The September speaker was John Messenger of Com Active Scooters. What a dramatic entrance! He drove into the venue, tooting down the aisle and stopping at the lectern! He is involved in trying to motivate both young and older people into more sport, physical activities and a more mobile lifestyle. He works with local councils to design programmes for school holidays and to get children more involved in sport. John informed us he is helping older people as they age to stay in their homes longer. He explained the role of mobility scooters, the different types available and the regulations covering their use. It is important, once purchased, that owners feel confident to handle the machine correctly and abide by road rules. John brought in a brand new shiny red scooter upon which to demonstrate its use and drove around the room. Most of the questions levelled at John were about speed and how far one could travel.

Not to miss an opportunity, some Probians, at the conclusion of his talk, jumped onboard the scooter to give it a try.

Some were so adept that one could actually visualise them whizzing around the footpaths of Forest Lake! Pedestrians beware! Elaine passed the Vote of Thanks.

Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc is a club for retirees and semi-retirees who want to stay young and enjoy fellowship, friendship, fun and frolic. Why not pay us a visit and see for yourselves what a wonderful group of people we are.

0434 519 413 346rush@ gmail.com In recent times, our televisions, newspapers and social media have been bombarded by horrific images of the growing humanitarian crisis in Europe as Western countries struggle to deal with the growing numbers of refugees fleeing poverty and war.

As these images are broadcast into our lounge rooms and onto our electronic devices, many are struggling to work through how we deal with them with our families. What do we say to our children when an image is suddenly broadcast onto breakfast TV of a child lying on a beach?

There are many strategies we can employ for working through these images with children. People far wiser and smarter than me have written extensively on these issues. But one area I think we can be more effective as families is teaching our families to act where we can.

Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

We can feel disempowered by these images and the increasing debate in our own country about refugees. Or we can use it as a trigger to teach our own children about our values. One example is to take on a sponsor child as a family and make a difference in the world. By doing that, we’re helping a child in poverty and we’re teaching our own families our values.

Recently, I went with Compassion Australia to see the work they are doing in Haiti (often cited as the poorest country on earth). While there, we met a man who lost both his parents by the age of four which resulted in him living on the street.

Through the generosity of a sponsor in Sydney, he received health care, education and food. Now, he is an adult training to be a doctor. He had the opportunity to leave Haiti and live in the States. But he has chosen to stay in Haiti so he can make a difference there. Indeed, he already has started sponsoring a child himself. He hopes to go on and serve his fellow Haitian people and be part of a generation of change.

That’s the power when we chose to be the change we want to see in the world.

Jesus said, “Much will be required from everyone to whom much has been given.

But even more will be demanded from the one to whom much has been entrusted.”

(Luke 12:48) Most people in the West have been blessed with great resources. We owe it to our fellow man to be generous with what we have. But even more than that, we owe it to the next generation to leave a legacy of generosity so they can go on to be the change we want to see in the world.

Kiwanis makes history with 100th birthday Members from the Brisbane Kiwanis Club attended the 47th Kiwanis Australia District Convention held in Melbourne in August. Under the banner of ‘Let’s Make History’ members travelled from around Australia to celebrate the 100th Anniversary Birthday of Kiwanis International and hear about the Kiwanis volunteers world wide and their contribution to children and communities.

In 2010, Kiwanis International joined forces with UNICEF to raise US$110 million to eradicate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus throughout the world. Australian Kiwanians raised $30,000 for Heart Kids Australia, allowing a continuation of research into children born with a heart defect. A cheque for $30,000 was presented to Erin Cerevelli, Heart Kids Board member and a survivor of VSD, making a total of $300,000 donated to Heart Kids research by Kiwanis Australia over the past seven years.

Marcel Kreienbuhl, Kiwanis International Trustee, was one of the keynote speakers who spoke about the Kiwanis family in Switzerland and their contribution to communities. A new board of trustees was elected to manage the Australian District for the next year leading into the 50th Anniversary of Kiwanis in Australia in 2017.

I am pleased to advise that Council’s Congestion Reduction Unit has confirmed the locations of the Pedestrian Countdown Timers that have been recently installed in Forest Lake. The locations of the Pedestrian Countdown Timers include Alpine Place, Forest Lake, which has been completed and Woogaroo Street, Forest Lake which is anticipated to be installed by the end of September 2015. I will continue to ensure that the pedestrian crossings are maintained and enhanced in order to ensure that the school children in the community of Forest Lake are safe.

Many residents will already be aware of the commencement of construction of the Forest Lake Community Hall which is located on College Avenue, Forest Lake. The building was designed with residents in mind and in a manner that reduces noise to adjoining properties. Further, to accommodate the growing families in the area, planning is underway for the new fenced playground which will be developed on the opposite side of the carpark to the Community Hall, for the enjoyment of children with all abilities. I am pleased that both the building and the playground will be able to serve many groups and residents in the local community. Further improvements also progressing in the area include the refurbishment of existing toilets in the carpark located on the sports field side of Forest Lake Boulevard at Forest Lake. Works are due to commence by the end of September 2015 and it is anticipated the refurbishment is to be completed by December 2015.

Job skills training Congratulations to local organisations in our area who were successful under the first round of funding allocations in the revamped Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

All together, three organisations in our local area are sharing in just over $360,000 to deliver valuable job skills training to job-seekers.

Participants will be able to access training in industries such as community services, food processing, manufacturing and business skills.

They will also be able to access qualifications such as trade certificates in warehousing operations, customer engagement, home and community care and business administration.

Hello Readers As our Year 12 students complete their Qld Core Skills Test, I reflect on the excellent preparation they have received throughout their schooling for this moment in their school life. Our students have been well prepared both in the Core Skills which will be tested and in the very important art of sitting tests.

Educationally, the concept of having a set of Core Skills taught across all subjects which make up the curriculum, prepares students to analyse information, synthesise ideas and create solutions to problems and to write succinctly about a topic. In senior secondary the ability to think critically and provide solutions to complex problems has been taught in greater depth across a variety of subjects. These are all skills required by our graduates as they enter tertiary studies and the workplace. You may ask “why change this”.

The Core Skills Test is used along with the School Based Assessment and both of these come together to form the OP score. The way the Core Skills Test results are used in the calculation of a student’s OP score has also come under criticism. Parents and students alike, have found the system complicated and some perceive it to be unjust.

The announcement this week by the Minister for Education, that Queensland will move to external examinations in each Senior subject in place of the Core Skills Test starting with the students entering Year 11 in 2018 (current Year 8) has been warmly welcomed by educators. The new system will report an ATAR score from 0-99 just as in other states.

St John’s is committed to a Year 12 credentialing system that provides transparency, credibility and alignment across Australia. We applaud the move to have students individual results be the only contribution to the final ATAR rank. We are also pleased to see that the combination of school based assessment which responds to the individual and state wide examinations in each subject, brings great credibility to the system.

We look forward to developing new programs and implementing the new system in the coming years.

Forest Lake Lions Club

by Kim Grierson Update Lions members across the world are passionate about assisting people with vision impairments. The Forest Lake Lions have collected 1083 pairs of used spectacles and these were recently handed over to the Redcliffe Eyeglass recycle centre, which is managed by the Lions Club of Redcliffe Kippa Ring. The centre is open from Monday to Friday and manned by volunteers, people on the unemployment benefits and those on community service.

The glasses are quality tested, washed, dried and graded in lensometer machines. They are then sorted and packed and forwarded to developing countries to be given to people in need with no cost to the Lions Club.

Since the commencement of this project by the Lions Club of Forest Lake in 2013, almost 4000 pairs of spectacles have been collected from optometrists in Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs, nursing homes and offices.

We have to thank the Forest Lake Community for handing their used spectacles to Paul Fell Optometrist and to them for kindly storing them until they are collected.

Monthly Update

A cruise is always a pleasant thing to anticipate, and so it was for 89 members and friends of Forest Lake 50 Plus Club who gathered for a very early start and a trip the club had never done before. Our destination was Brett’s Wharf at Hamilton to board the Lady Brisbane for a cruise to Southport, where a warm welcome was waiting for us from the skipper Jim and his friendly crew.

With everyone aboard the Lady Brisbane, we made our way down to the mouth of the Brisbane River, past Fisherman Island then cruised around St. Helena, Peel, Coochiemudlo and Russell Islands, heading towards South Stradbroke Island and onto our final destination at Marina Mirage, Southport.

During the six hour cruise, we were served warn muffins, tea and coffee for morning tea followed later by a wonderful BBQ with salads for lunch and finally a fruit platter for afternoon tea. The cruise was very relaxing aided by smooth sailing, a light breeze and warm sun, not to mention the wonderful scenery along the way. An excellent commentary was provided by the skipper along the way, keeping everyone’s interest level high. On arrival at the Marina, we made our way to our waiting coaches via the shops for the trip back home to Forest Lake.

RICHLAND SCOUT GROUP UPDATE

The following update from Richlands Scout Group was written by ten year old Cub Lochlann Hofmann as part of his award scheme for self expression and is reproduced in its original format as submitted. Well done Lochlann! ~ Editor.

In Scouts (Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers) we do a variety of activities including camping, hikes, learning to light fires, how to use a compass, how to make a trail and tons of others (note joeys age 6-7 years only go on small camps, small hikes and a few other things).

Scouts is a fun and energetic place where adventurous kids can learn to survive in the bush and learn history in a fun way (not sitting in a boring, stuffy classroom) by visiting historical monuments or museums. The best bit is you make friends along the way! On certain hikes, visits and camps scouts can earn badges which they pin (and later on sew) on their uniforms some are health and first aid, safety, ropes and when they complete the boomerang tasks they get the boomerang badges, the highest badge they can get in cubs is a grey wolf which is achieved by getting all of the boomerangs and doing 4 or 5 other things. There is only 1 badge scouts (joeys) keep when they move up into cubs and it is the promise challenge badge but sadly they have to remove it when getting the bronze boomerang.

The age groups for scouts are…

Joeys 6-7 years Cubs 8-11 years Scouts 11-15 years Venturers 15-18 years Rovers 18-25 years And people 18+ can sign up to be a leader or if that doesn’t suite you can volunteer to be a camp helper or just a plain helper.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Carolyn Nottingham It was great to see such a turnout of members playing for the Jim Wilson Memorial Trophy held at the St. Lucia Golf Course. Jim was a well respected and well liked member of the Forest Lake Club.

The day was sponsored by Flexiforce with the trophy being presented to the overall winner Trevor Buetel by Josh Wilson and Mark McNaughton. The course was difficult and accuracy was needed to stay out of trees and bunkers.

Congratulations to all winners. Cervical (neck) disc disease is caused by an intervertebral disc pressing on the spinal cord, causing pressure and pain. Intervertebral discs are located between the bones of the spine. When disc herniation occurs, the interior either protrudes (bulges) or extrudes (ruptures) into the vertebral canal, where the spinal cord resides. The onset of herniation can be either acute or chronic and though normally caused by disc degeneration in older genetically prone pets like dachshunds, can be caused by trauma.

When the spinal cord is compressed by cervical disc material, the dog or cat can experience signs ranging from mild to severe neck pain to complete paralysis of all four legs and with no pain perception.

Usually, the neck signs appear suddenly. The neck muscles may tense up or shake, the back may arch, and movement of the neck and head becomes difficult due to the pain. Sometimes nerve control of urinary and bowel functions will be affected.

An acute onset is an absolute emergency, and the pet should be seen immediately by a veterinarian. Diagnosis is confirmed after examination by various imaging techniques the simplest being a plain radiograph.

Treatment options depend on how severe the problem is. If the situation is mild, it may be treated with just medication, typically anti-inflammatories, painkillers and complete rest. If the problem resolves on therapy, but recurs when treatment is finished, surgery may be required.

More serious cases may require surgery urgently to take pressure off the spinal chord. Surgery is not an instant cure to the damage that can occur and it can take time for the spinal cord to heal.

Strict cage rest is necessary for either medical or surgical management. Your pet’s prognosis depends, of course, on their particular case. Generally speaking, if they could walk at all before surgery, their post-surgical prognosis is excellent. If they couldn’t walk, but still had some deep pain sensation, the post-surgical prognosis is good to excellent. If they lost deep pain sensation completely, the prognosis is guarded.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been another full month of activities in the electorate where Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had the good fortune to mix with locals across the Forest Lake Community.

As I prefaced in my last article, I held a mobile electorate office at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre at the start of last month.

The mobile office provided me with a wonderful opportunity to chat with locals about a range of topics affecting our community.

Listening to peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concerns, offering my advice and suggestions for future actions is an important part of the job and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to remind you that, as your local member, my team and I are available to assist local people.

While at the shopping centre I was pleased to support the Hummingbird House Charity crew who were collecting funds. I was also lucky enough to grab a photo with the Ninja Turtlesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Raphael and Princess Ariel who were doing their part to help support Hummingbird House.

Another worthwhile cause I was honoured to help support was the inaugural Loop the Lake organised by Maria, Rebecca and the team from Run4Kids. Run4Kids is an organisation dedicated to raising awareness and funds for childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charities through running, triathlons and other events.

It was great to see many locals looping the lake to raise funds and keep active and I was delighted to have the opportunity to present awards to event participants.

Congratulations to St Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Anglican College for doing so well in the races held throughout the day. It was encouraging to see so many kids participating in Loop the Lake, with at least 50 children competing. We are lucky to have such a picturesque setting to host active events like Loop the Lake.

With changes to road rules coming into effect at the start of the month, I wanted to advise everyone that the government is acting to make sure fatalities on our roads come down.

Double demerit points will now be issued to people caught using their mobile and driving.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll soon be launching a competition for young designers to submit ideas for my electorate Christmas card and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m hopeful thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a budding young artist â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Year 3 or younger â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at one of our schools who would like to take on the challenge.

I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to support and encourage our young artists and I hope to be able to showcase some of the amazing talent we have within the community.

There will be prizes for winners, so stay tuned for more information!
