Personally Speaking

Need Competent Legal or Visa Advice?

with Susannah Friis I’m sure I’m not alone in getting halfway to a destination and then wondering if I’d locked the front door/turned the stove off/shut the windows etc etc etc. My husband and I will say to each other in response to one of us stressing about something like that “But you always do <insert daily task here>, so why wouldn’t you have today? And that is usually correct! Because then you get home after intermittently worrying about it through the hours you’ve been away from the house, only to see that you did, in fact, lock the front door or turn the stove off or shut the windows. So much of our daily routines become automatic to us, don’t they? Things that are ingrained through many repetitions of a sustained period of time. I love how good ‘ole wikipedia puts it, doing things automatically is “the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level details required. That really says it, doesn’t it? And then there’s the other things that become automatic - our words, our actions, even our thoughts. We can easily react in a certain way without actually thinking about it. As a parent, I remember learning the lesson, and downfall, of an automatic reply to a child’s question. When our first child was still young, there was a parent I knew who automatically said ‘no’ to any question of permission, before thinking about it. The consequence was that the parent would then think about it and, quite often, change their mind and go back to the child with a ‘yes’. Now, it’s easy to see the confusion this would cause a child, not to mention the fact that they were being encouraged to not believe a ‘no’ answer when it was given. And we all know that parent who says ‘yes’ without thinking (or listening to the question properly!) and that can have disastrous consequences! Most cars these days have cruise control and the later models are now coming out with adaptive cruise, which causes the car to brake if you’re too close to the car in front etc. When I’m driving and I’m feeling a bit tired, I make a point to not engage the cruise option. The more automatic things the car does for me, the greater my tendency to not concentrate. And for me, I’m a bit like that in life, if I’m tired or stressed, my reactions and responses become more automatic and it’s harder to override that and, often, my automatic response isn’t the best one. I need to concentrate to make a better choice in my response. Just as we need to train our brain via practice for any new task we’d like to become routine, we need to practice the types of responses we want to be automatic or our default. And this requires intentionality and concentration. It can be hard to change those ‘tracks’ in our brain and our emotions but it’s worth the effort. If we make that effort and our automatic responses, internally and externally, become ones of kindness, patience and tolerance, it will make for better relationships, better home lives and generally a better community. We owe it to ourselves and those around us to reset our default and be thoughtful and considered in all our dealings with people, don’t you think?

Men’s Shed powers up thanks to Forest Lake Shopping Centre Forest Lake Shopping Centre is proud to be playing a role in the launch of the Forest Lake Men’s Shed, which was officially opened recently. As part of its Big Hearts campaign, the centre has donated $1,000 worth of power tools which will allow Men’s Shed members to tackle larger and more challenging projects. “Our Big Hearts campaign aims to recognise the community groups and organisations that enrich the lives of local residents, and is a tangible way for us to give back,” said Forest Lake Shopping Centre Marketing Manager, Linda Loosley. “We’re excited to be giving away $20,000 to local projects and causes that are making a difference in the Forest Lake area.” The Men’s Shed movement is a powerful tool in improving the community connectedness and mental and physical health of older Australian men. A Men’s Linda Loosley – Marketing Manager, Forest Lake Shopping Centre with Steve Bruford – President of the Men’s Shed Forest Lake. Shed provides a safe and busy environment where men from all walks of life can come together to work on projects or for a coffee and chat. Steve Bruford, President of the Forest Lake Men’s Shed, is passionate about creating a socially inclusive space for retired or semi-retired men to come together to work on projects that support the local community. “Forest Lake Shopping Centre’s generous donation means we are now equipped with a cordless drill, impact driver and power sander – none of which we had before,” said Steve. “One of the projects these tools will really help with is the construction of ‘buddy benches’ for local primary schools. A buddy bench aims to create a more inclusive playground – if a child is feeling left out, they can sit on the bench and another student or teacher will invite them to play or simply sit and talk with them.”

For local youngster, eight year old Ethan, tackling the challenge of Rubik’s cube is child’s play. Earlier this year, Ethan won a Rubik’s cube as a prize and soon became fascinated with the puzzle and learnt how to solve it with the help of online instructions and his dad. “Ethan could soon solve it off by heart and then he started watching videos of other people competing to solve a Rubik’s cube in the fastest time, said mum, Kylie. “Ethan has autism and Dup15q Syndrome, both of which cause developmental and cognitive difficulties, so to see him so taken with the Rubik’s cube is fantastic. It didn’t take long before Ethan expressed an interest in entering a speed cube competition, so his parents signed him up for the World Cube Association speed competition held in September at the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds. There were 70 competitors representing seven countries: India, Indonesia, China, Germany, Japan, Malaysia and Australia. “Ethan competed in three events setting best times but he didn’t end up making it to the finals, said Kylie. “He still had an amazing day watching all the events and making new friends. “His goal now is to solve the Rubik’s cube in under 30 seconds and attend speedcubing competitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth next year. “He has other goals of learning how to solve a cube while blindfolded, one handed and with his feet. We’ll just take it one step at a time but it’s great to see him with ambition and setting himself some targets. We wish you all the best Ethan and look forward to hearing about your speedcubing success next year! ~ Editor.

Special work of St Vincent de Paul needs more local volunteers Volunteer Refugee Tutoring and Community Support (VoRTCS), a special works of St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland, is calling for volunteers to help with English tutoring and community support for recently arrived refugee families settling in the greater Brisbane area. Often the horrors of war can seem a world away from Australia but for VoRTCS volunteers, helping refugees who have fled their homeland and helping them settle into their new community is all part of the role. The VoRTCS program supports refugee families to take up the educational, vocational and social opportunities that exist in Australian society by pairing them with volunteer tutor groups for weekly in-home visits. VoRTCS volunteers provide assistance around overcoming language barriers, developing independence within the community and decreasing social isolation. VoRTCS was created to ensure refugees had support available to them after the initial period of settlement into their new community. Currently, the VoRTCS program is supporting over 600 refugees in the greater Brisbane region through the work of 360 volunteers. For Sally Stubbington, VoRTCS Committee President, the program is the epitome of the Vinnies vision to offer a ‘hand up’ and not just a hand out to people in need. “It is such a privilege to assist members of our community to fulfil their potential. Our volunteers make such a difference to the lives of the families they work with, and I like to think it goes both ways – our volunteers experience and learn about different cultures and can take these experiences and knowledge back to their own communities,” said Sally. Having been involved with the program for over 10 years, Sally can attest to the difference the program makes to the refugees it supports. VoRTCS does not require volunteers to be experienced tutors or qualified teachers. Individuals who feel strongly about helping others, have cultural awareness and sensitivity and are able to dedicate approximately 90 minutes per week to their tutoring team and family would be the perfect fit for this unique opportunity. VoRTCS provide all the training necessary at a Family Tutor Information and Training Session, with refresher training held throughout the year. Volunteer intakes are held monthly with the next session scheduled on Saturday, 14th October 2017. If you would like to support newly settled refugee families, make a positive impact to their lives and build lasting cultural community connections, please contact VoRTCS to find out how to become a VoRTCS Family Tutor. For more information, or to express an interest in volunteering contact: Sandy Hang - VoRTCS Program Coordinator on 3010 1069 or info.vortcs@svdpqld.org.au. Community focus inspires new branch manager The ability to make a positive contribution to the local community is what inspires newly appointed Heritage Forest Lake Community Branch Manager Caleb Prescott.

Evening g & Saturdayy appointments available Mr Prescott has been with Heritage Bank for six years, originally on the Sunshine Coast and most recently in Ipswich. He has now taken over as Branch Manager for Heritage Forest Lake, one of seven Community Branches in the Heritage network that are operated in joint partnership with the local community. Under the Community Branch model, half the branch’s profits are returned to the local community in the form of grants to deserving local organisations and activities. The Forest Lake Community Branch is now approaching the milestone of $1 million in grants that it has given back to the local community. Mr Prescott said he was delighted to take the helm of a branch that focuses on community so strongly. “Community banking has inspired me right from the beginning of my Heritage journey, seeing how we can directly provide much needed support to help better our community,” Mr Prescott said. “Working in Forest Lake gives me the opportunity to work amongst a community filled with diverse groups, something that makes me very proud to belong to, and I am humbled to see the profits we generate making a real difference. “Being a customer-owned bank is something to be very proud of. We work directly for our customers, not shareholders, which makes a really significant difference in how we deliver our service. Our approach ensures we can deliver on our ‘People First’ promise time and time again.” The move to Forest Lake is not the only change taking place in Mr Prescott’s life – he and his wife are expecting their second child in November. “My family is the centre of my life. I like to try and share as much of the community spirit with them in tow, and really get in amongst our local community events with my whole family! “I am also an avid mountain biker, frequenting a number of Brisbane and Ipswich trails enjoying the outdoors and good company.” Mr Prescott welcomes all residents of Forest Lake, and representatives of local organisations, to call into the branch at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre. “We are always keen for local community groups and organisations to come in and have a chat around how we might be able to help support them. “My vision for the Heritage Bank Forest Lake Community Branch is to be widely known and well regarded in the community, and to give more people the chance to benefit from being part of our community bank.”

Local students help raise urgent issue As part of the Queensland Government initiative to raise awareness of domestic violence, Hip Hop Artist, Illy, has written a song ‘Back Around’ which is being used as the soundtrack for the Stop the Hurting youth campaign. Forest Lake State High School students aged 12-17 entered a competition to write the final verse of ‘Back Around’. Last month, special visitors Minister Fentiman and Ms Kaye McGrath, Chair of the Domestic and Family Violence Council and award winning journalist, joined students for a rap writing workshop where FLSHS teacher and hip hop artist, Mr Lachlan Gibbs, shared his song writing talents and coached students and guests in the art of writing rap songs. This workshop was so successful, 17 students have now entered the competition with their own rap. The winning entry will share a VIP In-Studio experience with Illy and have their lyrics featured in ‘Back Around’. Good luck Forest Lake SHS Kaye McGrath recently joined students students, together we can all work to Stop the Hurting and end domestic for a rap writing workshop. violence. In other news, Forest Lake families hosted sixteen students from Kinjo High School in Japan. Attending Forest Lake State High School each day for two weeks, students experienced many activities and adventures from painting boomerangs and t-shirts to surfing the waves at Surfers Paradise and making ice-cream with liquid nitrogen. They shared their Japanese customs and culture during the school’s Multi-cultural Day, and experienced the many other cultures that make up Forest Lake State High School including Samoan, Afghani, Indian, Vietnamese and Chinese. Aboriginal culture was a huge hit with the Japanese students. The boys learned how to play the digeridoo and the girls the clap sticks. They were inspired by the traditional indigenous dot artwork and were very enthusiastic to use this style to design and paint our native animals on their own boomerangs and t-shirts. An outing to the Gold Coast revealed that it was the first time some of the students had been to the beach, and they absolutely loved learning how to surf. They also visited the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where they were able to see native wild life and cuddle a koala. Students also took part in a cooking class where they made lamingtons and pancakes and sampled Weetbix and Vegemite on toast. During the September holidays, 15 Forest Lake students visited Japan and stayed with local families where they experienced Japanese culture, history and customs as well as visiting natural and man-made monuments and places of interest.

Forest Lake Lions Club update by Michael Janz The upcoming Lions Halloween Trivia Night will be raising funds to help a local child walk. All funds raised will help provide 11-year-old Jessie-Lee with a Hart Walker. Many Australian children like Jessie-Lee cannot walk due to medical conditions like cerebral palsy. The Lions Club of Forest Lake wants to get local children out of their wheelchairs and onto their feet, empowering each child to reach their potential. Our fundraising effort working together with the specialised expertise of the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation will help make a real difference to children like Jessie-Lee. The Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation (ALCMF) helps empower children who cannot walk unassisted to reach their potential. By facilitating the funding of walking devices that gets kids onto their feet, they are able to walk, explore, play, work and socialise. This makes them stronger and healthier - physically, emotionally and mentally. ALCMF’s on-going goal is to provide a walker for every child in Australia who needs one. Help these children out by joining in a night of trivia, fun, games and surprises. Get your Halloween costume ready and round up your smartest, fun-loving friends. The night’s details are: Saturday, 28th October; 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start; Forest Lake Community House, Alpine Place, Forest Lake; $13 per person with tables up 10 participants; Beer, wine, cocktails, soft drinks and nibblies; Book now at www.forestlakelions.org or phone 0422 811 321. Make Great Strides this month LJ Hooker Forest Lake will once again host the Great Strides charity event to raise funds for families living with cystic fibrosis. With tens of thousands of dollars raised over the last ten years, LJ Hooker are urging all Forest Lake residents to register to walk and make a real difference in the lives of families living with this devastating condition. Cystic fibrosis is Australia’s most common life threatening genetic condition – and there is no cure. A child is born with it every four days, yet many people have never heard of it or do not know what the condition really is. It is degenerative chronic illness that primarily affects the lungs and digestive systems. Wasps Monthly Update

R

by Vanessa Poskus R

UGBY

It’s funny how at the end of things you expect them to slow down, but nothing could be further from the truth at The Wasps! Our annual celebration, Trophy Day, was a fantastic time for everyone as we came together to enjoy the fruits of our labour this season. Mr Clinton Pattison, representing our Patron, Cr Angela Owen, was on hand to present the two perpetual trophies: Team Player of the Year (Ryley Neuendorf) and Team of the Year (U8s), that Cr Angela donated and established. Our friend and supporter, Cr Charles Strunk was in attendance to speak on the importance of volunteering to the survival of all grassroots sporting clubs. He also presented Volunteer of the Year to the Patterson family, as well as certificates to all our outstanding volunteers. Both representatives stayed on to help present trophies with the coaches and managers of each team. There were also lots of wonderful thank yous to our coaches and committee from the players and parents; then there was the kids and adults rugby, bouncy castle, great raffle (big thank yous to the Hon. Leanne Enoch, Cr Angela Owen, the Hon. Milton Dick, the Duffin family and Snap Fitness), St George mascot Happy with give aways, yummy food and glorious weather. Since then the rugby has continued, with our U6-U8 teams all involved in the Kenmore Carnival. Our teams put on a great showing with several wins on the board and a big thank you to coaches, managers, our awesome ref Enlaki Fatattpe (who refereed ten games on the trot), families and of course, our enthusiastic players who had a ball. Other sports and activities have been taking place at our wonderful venue, the Forest Lake Sport Fields, including hosting St John’s Touch Games into the Finals (go the Dragons!), the building of our incredible new playground (first of its kind in Australia) and school holiday activities, including a free Family Fun Day by the Department of Communities (Inala), free fitness for kids as part of BCC’s Chill Out Program and free trials of Young Sports multi-sports and athletics programs. We also have two group fitness instructors who hire and run sessions at our venue all year round (if you want to get in shape for summer let us know and we’ll put you in touch). Our new hirer, Young Sports, will be running an exciting Athletics Australia accredited athletics program in Term 4, for those families still looking for a local athletics venue for their children. It will be run on the same days to Little Athletics, so is a great outcome if you don’t want to have to travel to other suburbs for your grassroots summer athletics. Specialists such as physiotherapy and paediatric nutrition, as well as professional coaches in jumping, throws and running, will bring the latest research and training techniques to deliver a unique program. As it is a private provider, there will not be the same expectation on parents to volunteer. Please visit Young Sports www.youngsports.com.au for more information and contact Derek Scott for details. And of course, there’s still some rugby, with a Super Saturday 7s Competition at Ballymore for U10s to run the first four Saturdays of Term 4. If you are a 2007/8 birthdate, please come and join our team for this great opportunity. The buzz of busyness is part and parcel of active fun for kids at The Wasps!

South West Brisbane Stamp Club Update What is this stamp collection worth?

by Marius, South West Brisbane Stamp Club

This is one of the most often asked questions and usually by a person who has come into a stamp collection as part of a deceased estate or maybe something found at a garage sale. As someone who has been involved in this hobby for over 50 years, I have lost count of the number of collections which people have brought to me hoping they are sitting on a fortune. Unfortunately, 95% of the time, these collections turn out to be childhood collections where not much expense or effort was put into building it. I usually ask these people if there would be anyone in the family who might like to have it, particularly youngsters, as stamps are also a great learning tool and better than having their eyes glued to a games monitor all day. For better collections, I would ask if they know how much money has gone into building it. Do they have receipts from auction houses or stamp dealers? Many quality stamps hold their value well or even increase in value, so a careful examination is required, taking condition into account as well. As president of the South West Brisbane Stamp Club, I can offer a mentorship for anyone wishing to start a collection or offer advice on the best solutions for disposing of unwanted collections. Feel free to contact me, Marius, on 0410 366 685. Page 18 - October 2017 - The Lake News

FOREST LAKE RSL Sub-Branch Update Honouring Vietnam Veterans

by Brian Robertson son

The Vietnam War was hard for many. Forest Lake RSL members honour those who fell and still lie in that foreign field. We also honour those who returned only to receive a homecoming they did not deserve. Politics and war are a poisonous mix that we never seem to get right. Those in uniform in Vietnam bore the brunt of our political ineptitude of the time. Recently the Forest Lake RSL Sub Branch paused to remember those who fell and those who survived this war. They invited local Vietnam Veterans and partners to join them at a ceremony and a dinner held at the Durack Inala Bowls and RSL Club (corner of Bowhill and Blunder roads). Among invited guests were Councillor Steve Griffiths; Ms. Pam McCreadie on behalf of Councillor Charles Strunk; Major Brett McCreadie, accompanied by three cadets from 219 Squadron Archerfield, and Mr. Caleb Prescott from Heritage Bank Forest Lake. The Air Force cadets marched in the Colours and wreaths were laid by President Bob Richards on behalf of the RSL, Hannah Richards on behalf of Australian War Animals Memorial Organisation Inc. (AWAMO), and David Grant on behalf of all Vietnam Veterans. No one expresses what veterans and serving members of the forces feel about the Vietnam conflict better than veteran Brigadier George Mansford who also served in Korea and in Malaya/Borneo conflicts: Today the ranks grow thinner and always are the increasing nudges from Father Time to remind all of their mortality. If the fallen could speak perhaps it would be to remind all—who they were and what they were. They would say “Our nation is indeed the lucky country and will remain so, if you, the living, strive to keep it so.” They would remind us to “Fight the good fight for what you believe to be right.” They would demand “Honour us by your actions as active members of the community, for you are us and we are you. While you live, we live.” Our past Secretary Peter Foley was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. The Sub-Branch President Bob Richards gave a moving account of the battle of Long Tan as related to him by friends who were present. All enjoyed the ceremony, the speeches, the company and the first class food.

On Wednesday 6th September, two buses were required to take seventy eight members of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club on the Club’s regular monthly outing. Our destination for the day was the beautiful North Stradbroke Island located in Moreton Bay. On arrival at Cleveland, it was a short wait for the Stradbroke Vehicle Ferry Barge. With the barge full, it was just a 45 minute trip from Cleveland to Dunwich and a short drive to the Headland Park at Point Lookout. At Headland Park we tucked into a delicious morning tea, which was provided by several of our members. With morning tea over, several of our members made their way around to the George Walkway around the headlands for a view of the ocean and even watch some whales and dolphins playing. It was then time to make our way to the Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel for our delicious two course lunch, a couple of drinks and watch more whales breaching and playing out from the hotel and the views from the hotel were outstanding. Like all good days out, it was time to make our way back to Dunwich and the barge for our trip back to Cleveland and the long drive back to Forest Lake. The September ‘Extra Activity’ was held at The Greenbank R.S.L on Wednesday 13th for a lunch with 33 members attending. As usual there was a lot of good humour and in particular talk about our recent day trip to Stradbroke Island. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. Date claimers for the next two meetings are 20th October and 17th November. Forest Lake Area F

Garden Group

by John Prout

With the footy finals out of the way and the weather warming up nicely, there isn’t a better place to be than the garden. October is a huge month in the garden. With so much ready to plant, you’ll be struggling to get it all done however the longer days will assist as well as the weather being not too hot and many wonderful relaxing hours can be spent in our garden. Isn’t it wonderful to see all the flowers revealing their lovely colours and fragrances? What a great time of year spring is, although I would like to see more rain as my tanks are now under half full. How’s your tank? It’s a wonderful time to visit the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens and Roma Street Parklands. The horticulturists have done a great job in organising flower colours in different designs. What an enjoyable outing our bus trip to Stradbroke Island was. For those who went on the walk at Point Lookout they were rewarded in seeing a couple of whales and dolphins pass by and even a koala in a tree. Our October meeting is our biennial Friendship Day where other garden clubs have been invited to join us for the meeting. Noel Prior will be our guest speaker covering the ferns and other foliage. Noel will have some ferns to sell after his presentation. There will be no bench or free plants at this meeting. I’ve recently planted a new batch of cos lettuce (Lactuca sativa). There is nothing like the freshness of home grown vegetables not only for their fresh taste but you know what, if any, fertilizers have been used. It is easy to grow your own organic vegetables. In a few weeks I’ll be able to pick some Cos leaves as I require them. You cannot beat that for freshness so why not give it a go? Lawns are looking a bit ‘brownish’ at the moment due to the lack of rain and coming out of the cooler months. Once the rain comes it won’t take long for the fresh green colour to appear. On the downside, and for some reason, the weeds will start to flourish also. Our November meeting clashes with Melbourne Cup and we realise some members like to go to a cup function. Our meeting will commence at 9am (one hour earlier) so you can attend the meeting as well as attend a cup function.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

Next meeting Tuesday, 7 November at 9am (1hr earlier) start. Uniting Church Community Life Centre, 528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 3288 3131 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Welcome everyone to the October edition. Hope you are all enjoying this wonderful time of the year. The AGM was held on the 14 September and a new committee was welcomed. These volunteers are a very dedicated group and we all look forward to another year of success and good times. National Seniors CEO Dagmar Parsons was our guest speaker for September. Dagmar’s presentation bought our members up to date with future directions of National Seniors. Some 300 Seniors came together for the Seniors Week Event on 22 August. What an incredibly enjoyable day it was with plenty of delicious food and lively entertainment. It was also an opportunity to see the Lighthouse Centre in Woogaroo Street - a great venue for this Event. Speaking of High Teas, a fun loving group of lady members held a High Tea/Auction one afternoon in August. From all the comments it was a fun filled afternoon of glitz and glamour. Thank you to these ladies for their brilliant organisation, well done everyone. The movie and entertainment group have enjoyed excellent movies and shows this year. There’s always time for lunch afterwards. A good outing with good friends. A group are lunching at The Blue Fin this month and in November we have our popular Melbourne Cup Function with great fun happening on the day. For several months now members have been donating their no-longer-needed old reading glasses. These are then collected by Lions Clubs (Redbank Goodna Lioness Club), taken to Kippa-Ring Recycle Centre, examined, graded by volunteers, packed and sent to third world countries. Our member Shirley Cawley has been passing on the donations on behalf of our members. National Seniors Forest Lake provides a friendly welcome to all ladies and gentlemen in the 50 something age group. Next Meeting date is Thursday October 12 at the Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands. (every second Thursday of the month), 9.30am sign in, 10am start. Branch meeting then it’s a very special entertainer for all to enjoy. Join us if you can for lunch at The Lion after the meeting. To our members who are unwell or recovering from surgery, our best wishes for a return to good health. This has been a very difficult time with so many people ill. Check out our Branch website www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au/. For further information about our Branch please contact Julie 3278 7274. Page 22 - October 2017 - The Lake News

FEDER AL MEMBER FOR OXLE Y

Recently I had the pleasure of joining almost 200 seniors and pensioners from Springfield with local State candidate for Jordan, Charis Mullen, and Durack to celebrate National Seniors Week. It was a pleasure to be joined by representatives from the Stroke Foundation and Centrelink at the Springfield morning tea, which also featured a special performance from the St Peters Lutheran Grade 2 and 3 choir. Seniors make an incredible contribution to our local community. On a national scale it is estimated that grandparents contribute over $15 billion dollars to the national economy, just by providing care to their grandchildren. On top of this, volunteering efforts by seniors contribute a further $16 billion dollars to the national economy. Often referred to as the ‘silent army’, seniors and pensioners are well known for just getting on with it and deserve greater recognition for their efforts. However I know that times are tough lately with the cost of living rising and having a big impact. That is why I voted in the Parliament against scrapping the energy supplement payment to pensioners. Currently singles receive $14.10 per fortnight and couples receive $10.60 each for this payment. At a time of rising energy prices and coming into summer, I know this just isn’t fair on pensioners. We need to stand up and protect those who have already given so much to the community. I’m also aware of how the failed NBN rollout is affecting seniors and pensioners. Every day my office receives phone calls from older residents who are frustrated with their lack of connection. Especially for people who require a reliable internet and phone connection for medical reasons, the failed rollout is simply unacceptable. I’ll be continuing to work hard and see these problems fixed without hesitation. If you or anyone you know has NBN troubles, please contact my office on 3879 6440.

Dave is a Chartered Accountant with a keen interest in personal finance issues

Some of you may be aware that the rules for superannuation contributions changed with effect from 1 July 2017. Some of the changes are quite complex but those that may be particularly relevant for some people concern the limits for concessional superannuation contributions. The main forms of concessional contributions include compulsory superannuation guarantee contributions made by your employer and salary sacrificed contributions made by yourself. Both of these attract a 15% contributions tax when the money is received by the superannuation fund. For the 2016-17 financial year, there was a distinction concerning the amount of concessional contributions that could be made in a year based on your age. Those under 50 could contribute $30,000 and for those over 50 the maximum was generally $35,000. With effect from 1 July 2017, this age-based distinction has been withdrawn and in addition, a threshold of $25,000 of concessional contributions now applies to everyone. There are certain tax implications if one exceeds the concessional contributions cap, so it is best not to venture there. For those people who may have been able to contribute significantly to their superannuation prior to the 2017-18 financial year, it is appropriate to reconsider the total amounts contributed and perhaps make some downward adjustments thereto in relation to their salary sacrificed contributions. Furthermore, in doing so, it is worthwhile being mindful of the impact that any promotions may have in terms of the compulsory level of employer contributions. For example, one might reduce the salary sacrificed contributions but fail to recognise the impact on employer contributions due to a very healthy pay increase during the year, either from promotion or a change in employment. Also, be mindful of the potential differences in timing between concessional contributions being made by your employer to the superannuation fund and the time that they impact on your actual pay, for example, being deducted as a salary sacrificed contribution. In this regard, be careful about sailing “too close to the wind” in terms of the amounts allowed. Superannuation represent a tax advantaged vehicle for saving for retirement. Make sure the tax rules work with you and not against you.

Getting you home sooner It’s no secret that congestion on the Centenary Highway can prolong getting home to Forest Lake. That’s why I was pleased to announce recently that the State Government will invest $65 million for construction of the Sumners Road Interchange. One of the many benefits of this project will be to reduce congestion on the Centenary Highway meaning you can get home sooner at the end of the day. Plastic bag ban will improve Forest Lake environment Forest Lake residents can look forward to a cleaner lake, parks and public areas with a container refund scheme and a ban on plastic shopping bags set to start in Queensland next year. Through the container deposit scheme, locals will be able to receive 10 cents back in their pocket for every eligible container they return. There will be designated container refund points across the state, with most drink containers between 150ml and three litres eligible for a refund. I know how much our local community values our area’s natural environment and we all want our parks, the Lake and waterways to be litter free. Both of these initiatives come into effect from July 1 next year, with more information available online at www. ehp.qld.gov.au/waste. Apply for grants to ‘accelerate’ small business growth Small businesses in our local area are encouraged to apply for the latest round of Accelerate Small Business Grants, with up to $10,000 in funding available. These grants provide targeted assistance for small businesses to engage experts, like mentors and specialist consultants, to help boost business growth. Applications for the Accelerate Small Business Grants Program are open until 30 June 2018, or until funding is exhausted. With so many great small businesses in the Forest Lake area, I encourage locals to apply. To be eligible, Queensland businesses must have been trading for a minimum of three years, have a minimum turnover of $500,000 and fewer than 20 employees. The funding must be matched by a cash contribution from the participating business. For more information, and to apply online, visit www.business.qld.gov.au/accelerate.

New Playground for Forest Lake Sports Field September has brought lots of excitement to families in Forest Lake. The new playground at the sports field next to the WASP’s junior rugby union club is complete, as I promised. I’ve enjoyed working with locals, community groups and sporting groups for the past year to ensure the community is being heard. And it’s not just empty words – I’m proud to be delivering on my promises to this great community. Dog Agility Equipment at Forest Lake Sports Field Park Due to public demand, council has set up some exercise equipment in the Forest Lake off-leash area in a straight line so there’s the maximum amount of free run space available. This is a win for the community, not just pet owners, as it lets dogs burn off their energy in an appropriate spot. Great Strides Forest Lake I encourage residents to spread the word and join in next month’s Great Strides Forest Lake fun day walk, which is proudly supported by L.J. Hookers. It will be an actionpacked day, all in the name of supporting Queenslanders living with cystic fibrosis. I hope you can join me in getting behind this fantastic local initiative. Congratulations Congratulations to the team at Ray White Forest Lake for wining a community service award this month. Alanna and Thanh always go above and beyond – not only did they raise much-needed funds this year when my ward office participated in the Greatest Shave in aid of the Leukaemia Foundation, but they continue to bring joy to children at many local festivals and events. Chaplaincies Dinner The Chaplaincy Dinner was a roaring success, raising funds that will go towards more good work. MC Peter Doherty, from Channel 7, and guest speaker, local Olympian Julie McDonald, made the night extra special. I was pleased the Before Forest Lake book published by the history group and signed by our Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Federal MP for Oxley Milton Dick and myself found a home on the night. Please join me in thanking Rev. Russell and his Chappy team for all the wonderful work they do in the local community and for a fabulous night. As always, if you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to contact my friendly staff at the Forest Lake Ward office on 3407 1211.

Family Focus

with Mark Mackay

A friend of mine was asked recently, “How often do you discipline your children?” His response seemed to shock his questioner, “Daily.” The person asking the question surmised that my friend must be a hard disciplinarian and chided him for being so harsh. “But,” he explained to her, “discipline isn’t just about punishment. Discipline is about the whole of parenting – building appropriately healthy boundaries, instilling good values and, yes, as appropriate, punishing our children as required.” And it’s this broader understanding of discipline that makes the following statement one of my favourite phrases, “Discipline is not a dirty word!” That’s the advice an older man gave me when we had our first child. He went on to tell me, “Remember Mark, your first job is to be her dad, not her friend.” My initial reaction was, “But I want to be her friend.” He explained to me that while it’s good for me to want to be a friend to my kids, my first priority is to be their parent – to discipline: to guide, to nurture and to lead. Many parents struggle with the whole realm of discipline, sometimes because discipline was so poorly modelled for us, other times because we are just trying to balance things well. As a result, so many parents beat themselves up because they don’t meet the picture portrayed on social media. It can be enough to lose heart. But studies have shown that, on average when kids have good boundaries and discipline, they achieve better results at school, have better social skills, gain better self-discipline and respect others. The other potential aspect, I believe, is that parents become empowered to be exactly that – parents! We want our kids to respect us – the Biblical commandment is for children to “honour your father and mother” (Exodus 20:12). That comes as parents honour one another, back one another up and show respect for ourselves by not accepting disrespect. The wonderful thing about healthy discipline is that the results become a legacy. The way I know that, is that the older man who gave me the advice about being a parent before being a friend was my dad, who was once given the same advice by his father. My dad and I are mates but that mateship grew out of him being first and foremost, ‘Dad’. If you were not modelled good parenting, you can be the generation that makes the change! Talk it out with other parents, get along to church and meet parents facing the same questions as you and do life together. “It takes a village to raise a child.”

ICHLANDS - FOREST LAKE SCOUT GROUP UPDAT BY TA N I A McLAUGH LI N

E

When most people think of Scouts, they picture young boys hiking around with their backpacks, helping little old ladies cross the road or sitting around tying knots. The Scouting Founder, Sir Robert Baden - Powell, was not only an avid outdoorsman, he was also an artist. Today’s Scouts have the opportunity to expand their skills in many areas of the arts. Within our program and award schemes, our youth members in all sections are able to earn badges such as Literature, Performing Arts, Expressions, Visual Arts, Handicraft and many others. On a local level, our Scouts connected with local community groups such as the Inala Art Gallery and Bunnings to start exploring visual arts and handicraft projects. Some of our young people have previously written reports, or even articles for this publication. On many of our outings, we have had youth members as young as eight years of age showing an interest in photography and wanting to develop this interest. Craft works form a big part of our program from the very youngest of our Joey Scouts, through to our older members. The opportunity to express their individuality while working toward accomplishing a set goal is vital to our goal of helping our youth members become creative thinkers and problem solvers. Recently, a number of our members were involved in a stage production called Rochedale Revue. They dedicated many weekends to rehearsals, learning their lines for their skits, developing their musical skills and learning the words of their songs, practicing, practicing and practicing their dance moves, learning the rules of stage craft - how to stand, when to be quiet, learning presentation skills of costume, hair and makeup. Most importantly, they have learned teamwork, developed leadership, patience and caring for younger cast members and experienced the feeling of belonging to another family. Every year, hundreds of Scouts and Guides from around Australia - and the world - are involve in Gang Shows and Revues. Apart from the benefit to the Scouts and Guides, it also provides an opportunity for reasonably priced entertainment for families. Hop online and find out where and when the next Scout Revue is on. You may be surprised at the level of talent you are missing out on seeing! Page 28 - October 2017 - The Lake News

Algester Update As your state representative, I am incredibly proud of the work that the Queensland Government is doing to ensure that our local communities are being put first. Recently, the State Government launched the Buy Queensland Procurement Strategy, which is about putting into action the idea that our local businesses matter. This strategy means that businesses who maintain a workforce within 125 kilometres of where work is required will be given a bonus weighting of up to thirty per cent in all State Government tender assessments. This is a huge win for Queensland because we know that local businesses here in our community and across Queensland are just as good as ones from Sydney, Melbourne and overseas. The Buy Queensland Strategy came into effect from 1st September and will apply when the State Government purchases goods and services, commissions major projects and infrastructure or builds the schools, housing or other facilities that our community needs. As the Minister for Small Business, I’m also incredibly proud to have launched a state-wide campaign called Go Local, Grow Local, which is about encouraging people to spend their money locally. When you go local, you not only help grow the economy, but you help grow our communities. Where you choose to spend your money can have a direct impact on economic growth. It helps build strong resilient communities, protect small businesses and secure local jobs. I urge every member of our community to choose local small businesses when they shop, dine, or need a trade. To find out more about Buy Queensland you can visit www.hpw.qld.gov. au/Procurement/ProcurementStrategy/Pages/default.aspx. To all Probians who are feeling poorly and not well wherever you may be, we extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery. And to those members who are about to depart on holidays and trips, we wish you a safe return. I had the privilege of being the monthly speaker at the latest Probus meeting and what follows is a brief summary of my talk on ‘Growing up under Apartheid.’ To be able to truly understand the South African culture and mind, it was necessary to give a brief history lesson. The first Europeans to arrive on South African soil were the Portuguese viz. Bartholomeu Diaz, later Vasco da Gama who was successful in rounding the Cape and finding a sea route to India. As competition increased between the Dutch East India Company and the British East India Company, the Dutch took the initiative and on 6 April 1652, South Africa was settled. In 1688 the French Huguenots arrived and on board was Pierre Joubert, Marge’s ancestor, who smuggled out a Protestant Bible in a loaf of bread. This bible can be seen at the Huguenot Museum in Franschhoek. After my parent’s divorce when I was about three years old, I went to live with my grandparents on the family property “Alicedale” which became a place of refuge for the rest of my life. My grandfather, called Dadda, was the only one in the district who had written contracts with his workers, who were all Zulus. The workers lived in a compound, the old farm house where they had beds,a kitchen with a coal stove, a cold shower and an outside dunny. On Fridays, the Zulu cook would come up to the main house to collect supplies of sugar, coffee, tobacco and fat/butter. He then had to negotiate with the chief gardener for some vegetables. I was fluent in Zulu and apparently often interfered with the negotiations to the hilarity of the Africans. When Zulus respected one, you were given a nickname. Dadda was called Nkosi Ndhlovu (elephant bull) and I was called Mhlganpan (clever questioner). Dadda taught me to read and write and by the age of four years I had developed a love of reading and history and spent many hours in his library cum study. At the age of seven years, my mother remarried and we moved to Randfontein, on the Witwatersrand goldfields. At seven years old, I was sent to school at Burgher Right, known for its academic and English syllabus, which was one and a half days ride by diesel and steam train, which I travelled on my own. From a happy, free existence, everything changed. In 1948, when I entered high school and began at boarding school, Apartheid was born. In 1949, the Population Registration Act was passed and everyone had to be registered under a Racial Category. This was a distressing time when sometimes members of the same family were classified differently. If a “white” had been reclassified as coloured, then that person would have to move to a Coloured are, change schools, suffer job discrimination, loss of voting rights and often family breakup. After briefly mentioning achievements at school and beyond, I concluded my talk with some staggering Government statistics, including horrific AIDS statistics and the unemployment rate being 42%? Visitor Councillor Charles Strunk of the Forest Lake Ward made a presentation and passed the Vote of Thanks.

Veterinary News by Dr Ian Gorrie BVSc

Bladder Stones Urinary calculi or bladder stones are aggregations of various crystals that form in the bladder. They may be in the form of large single stones or multiple small stones, like sand or gravel. When discovered, they may still be in the bladder but often they have moved into the urethra when symptoms appear. The stones may cause a partial or a complete obstruction to the outflow of urine, making your pet strain when trying to pass urine. A complete obstruction is an emergency which happens most frequently in male cats. They can also cause trauma to the lining of the bladder or urethra due to their rough surface which results in production of bloody urine and severe discomfort when urine is passed. Infection is often present, making your pet sick as well. How are they diagnosed? Some bladder stones can be palpated through the abdominal wall, however not all are found this way. Most bladder stones are visible on x-ray or ultrasound. Stones not visible this way may require a contrast to be placed in the bladder before taking an x-ray. Small stones and crystals can be collected in a urine sample and diagnosed by microscope examination How are they treated? There are two ways to remove bladder stones. The fastest is via surgery. The bladder is opened and the offending bladder stones are removed and/or the urethra is flushed if smaller stones have lodged there. Surgery is indicated immediately if there is an outflow obstruction from the bladder. Some stones can be dissolved, though this may take many weeks or months of treatment. How are they prevented? There are many causes of bladder stone formation. When the stones or crystals are removed and identified, a management program is started. This will be a combination of diet and medication and will involve regular checks of the urine.
