Morning tea at Mt Tamborine Botanical Gardens was a enjoyable affair with some home-made goodies supplied by members. The delectable delights made it necessary to take a walk through the gardens for some exercise before lunch.

The Christmas in July lunch was held at the Heritage Estate Wines at Mt Tamborine. Walking into the venue, we were all taken aback by its ambience. We entered a large room with an open log fire burning in the grate, Christmas decorations on tables and waitresses offering some wine-tasting before the meal, which was superb. It certainly felt as if we were in the Northern Hemisphere enjoying Christmas! After the delightful lunch, the bus deposited members at Gallery Walk where some Probians engaged in shopping. It was then time to head homeward bound.

A very special visitor to the August meeting was Mark Newman from the Heritage Bank who presented the Club with a cheque donated under the auspices of Forest Lake One Community (FLOC). He also supplied information about the Bank initiative with regard to ‘Refer a Friend or Relative’ to assist in increasing its client base.

The monthly speaker was Dr. James Lergessner author of Cloudland: Queen of Dancehalls. The original builder of Cloudland was Thomas Eslick who wanted to construct the finest dancehall in the Southern hemisphere. It was built in 1939 and at its opening, one thousand pigeons were released to celebrate the event. The ballroom was in vogue from 1939 to 1982. During the war years, 1942 to 1945, it was used as a military billet for American and Commonwealth troops and Brisbane girls were taught to jitterbug by the Americans. A funicular railway ran up the hill to the Ballroom from Breakfast Creek Road. Buddy Holly performed at Cloudland exactly a year before his death in a plane crash. At that concert he was supported by Johnny O’Keefe, Paul Anka and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Cloudland remained a notable landmark right up to its ‘middle of the night’ demolition by the Dean Brothers in 1982. It was the owner, Peter Kurtz, and not the Government, who gave the final demolition order. The parties involved in the demolition were fined but rumours persisted and still do, that some government aid was involved as police were present and all traffic lights were locked at green to facilitate the heavy traffic. People still reminisce fondly about Cloudland.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Although it feels like we barely had a winter, the seasons have changed as they do and we find ourselves looking into the bright blue sky of spring.

There’s a reason spring is said by many to be their favourite month; there’s a freshness in the air, days of cloudless sky and dazzling sun, and signs of new life all around us.

Years ago, when our middle child was around five years old, we kept chickens. We had a rooster and so there were many little chicks pottering around, especially in the springtime. Our daughter loved those chooks. She would race down after school, barely changed from her uniform. We would find her sitting in the middle of the pen with one chook in her lap, sometimes with another perched comfortably on her head. She named every single one of them and knew all their little idiosyncrasies.

Now, we were, and still are, a happy meat eating family, so chicken (not one of our ones though) was often on the menu.

I held my breath every time I served a chicken dish up to our daughter, having usually just called her from the chook pen to wash her hands and come to tea.

And then one evening it happened. We were halfway through the meal when our five year old put down her fork and exclaimed, “This is chicken!� Before I could reply, our daughter continued, “Ha! How funny! Chicken (pointing out the back door)...and chicken (pointing to her meal)! They’re called the same name!� I glanced at our 12 year old son, silently begging him not to utter a word, before laughing nervously and agreeing that, yes, it was indeed funny that her meal and her pets shared the same name!

In this case, ignorance really was bliss! At some point though, and I can’t remember when it was for our daughter and chicken, we come into the truth of a thing and we have the opportunity to decide what to do with our newfound information.

Sometimes, we can be ignorant, either positively or negatively, about a person or situation and when the truth is revealed, it can take some time to adjust.

I’ve seen many times when people realise a truth about someone else and they just can’t get past it; other times, the truth is revealed and accepted with open arms. There are times when what is shown to be true is hard to face, especially if it’s someone we love and thought we knew. But just as knowing that there really is only one thing called chicken could have devastated our daughter and made her vow never to eat it again, we can discount all the good a person has done when we learn something about them that we were previously oblivious to. The brave way out of ignorance is an acknowledgement that we are all faulty, that we all have traits and past deeds that we would rather others were ignorant of. Does our past or a truth about our character mean that all the good we’ve ever done doesn’t count? No. Rather, it reveals our human frailty and natural condition.

Don’t be a chicken (see what I did there?), keep loving and standing beside others even when our ignorance is shattered and truth comes shining through.

It’s a privilege and an honour to be voted in as the new Federal Member for Oxley and I’d like to thank the community for placing their trust in me to represent you and be your voice in Canberra over the next three years.

I know how important it is to have strong representation which is why my door will always be open and there’s no problem too big or too small to drop by the office and discuss.

Throughout the election campaign, I spoke to many residents about their concerns and issues for the local area and how these can be addressed.

High on the list was saving Medicare, a quality education for our children and the rolling out of the NBN which are now all part of my 100 day plan to make sure the most important areas of need are given immediate attention.

Among these, the NBN was consistently a hot topic and is one of my top priorities to make sure this vital infrastructure for the 21st century is provided out to as many homes as possible, on time and on budget. I’m delighted to report that construction is set to begin for parts of Forest Lake in the second half of this year and I’ll asking for a report on the expected completion date for these works.

Another high priority area will be working hard and campaigning to lift the Government’s freeze on Medicare payments to doctors. Doctors throughout the region are telling me that the current situation means passing more costs onto patients which is simply unacceptable and one that I’ll be fighting to change.

by Dr Paul Holliday Minimal Intervention Dentistry Sounds scary doesn’t it? Well maybe anything with the word dentistry sounds scary?

Did you know that in the 19th century people thought decay was caused by a ‘tooth worm’? Dentistry has come a long way since then. It continues to change at a rapid rate just like the rest of the world. New materials and techniques appear every week.

So what is minimal intervention dentistry?

It is the approach where dental professionals help everyone to keep their teeth for a lifetime without holes. Now obviously you are thinking “I already have fillings, what about me?”Well, the idea is to stop you from needing more fillings or needing larger fillings when the old ones need replacing.

How does it work?

Since everybody is different, it works differently for everyone.

Your particular risk of dental problems be they holes/cavities known as decay or gum problems or bite/TMJ problems are assessed and various tests are needed to help work this out.

Normally, x-rays are required to make sure no holes or problems are present before a personalized dental plan can be worked out.

This may include looking at your diet or testing your saliva. If you are at risk for any of the potential problems then different methods of managing these potential problems would be used. You may not like some of them. For example, I recently talked to a young lady who loved soft drinks and I am sure you could guess which one in particular she loved. She was drinking it several times a day every day and had come to see me because her teeth were sensitive. After a comprehensive exam, x-rays, diet analysis and saliva testing we found she was dehydrated (because of the soft drink and lack of water intake) as well as the enamel (the white strong bit of the teeth) was very weak from acid (yes that was from the soft drink too). She had a choice to make – stop drinking as much soft drink or face lots of problems with her teeth. Luckily she loved her nice smile more than the soft drink so she cut down a lot and started using a tooth strengthening paste on her teeth and drank more water. The sensitivity also disappeared.

How often should I go to the dentist?

Since everybody is different it depends. If you are diagnosed as high risk you should go more often and if you are diagnosed as low risk you don’t need to go as often. Everyone still needs to go to the dentist for regular checks and cleanings so don’t think because you don’t get holes that means you don’t need to go – it just means you may not need to go as often as your partner or your children. A good routine would be every six months. A visit to the dentist should start no later than around 5 years of age or earlier if you are worried about something. Even if you don’t have any of your own teeth anymore you still should see a dentist even though you should not need to go very often.

It sounds great but I am still too scared to go to the dentist.

Many people are scared of going to the dentist but the best way to stop being scared is to go regularly so that any potential problems can be fixed before they become big problems.

Great fun was had by all at the recent Mad Hatters Tea Party hosted by Allstars Performing Arts at Forest Lake Shopping Centre.

A new national survey from R U OK? has revealed Australians spend an average of 46 hours of their weekly downtime looking at their TVs and digital devices, compared to an average of six hours engaging with family and friends.

The suicide prevention charity has also revealed that around half of Australians spend less than two hours of their weekly downtime connecting with the people who matter to them.

R U OK? Campaign Director Rebecca Lewis said the research has highlighted that we’re more intimately acquainted with our devices than the highs and lows of our families’ and friends’ lives.

“There’s nothing wrong with taking time to relax and unwind but we need to ensure our screen time is not trumping our relationships,” Rebecca said. “The fact that we’re spending almost eight times the amount of hours with our screens, instead of engaging with the people who matter to us, suggests that we’re losing touch with one another.”

The fete, from 11am to 7pm on Saturday, September 10, is raising funds to air-condition the school’s Prep classrooms and build a permanent shade structure for the new senior playground.

A warm welcome to Mr Russell Morgan, St John’s new Director of Performing Arts. He has commenced this term, just as Stage 2 of the Performing Arts Centre of Excellence is shortly to commence construction – fresh beginnings to expand on a wonderful foundation.

Russell comes to St John’s from Nambour Christian College, where he taught for 15 years. For 10 of those years he was Head of their Creative and Performing Arts. Russell brings a wealth of experience in the arts including teaching, directing, producing, designing and choreographing all aspects of school performance life.

Besides being a seasoned teacher, Russell brings years of experience in performing in both professional and amateur realms. He is the founding Director of Inside Out Theatre Company, a community theatre group that also runs a primary drama program teaching drama and performing productions.

Russell describes himself as a passionate, dedicated, energetic teacher; a leader who strives to provide the best opportunities for students and staff. He aims to enhance our students’ academic learning, build character and foster good citizenship.

We are looking forward to benefiting from the energy and experience that Russell brings to St John’s. His vision is to grow a passion for the Arts within our students by combining excellent programs and experiences with an element of fun.

“Life is a musical; many aren’t brave enough to burst into song or swing on that lamp post,” Russell said. By providing a safe environment he wants to inspire students to take risks in performance exploration, developing self-expression and showcasing talents.

Local twins need your help Sophia and Olivia Bayton are so thankful to the Lions for their support.

For most people, the imminent arrival of a new baby is both exciting and daunting at the same time. To find out you’re having the double delight of twins can add to both emotions and it was no different 11 years ago for local resident Nilissa Baynton.

After several rounds of IVF, Nilissa was over the moon at the news of her pregnancy, despite it being fraught with complications that necessitated complete bed rest. Nilissa and her husband welcomed their twin girls into the world 11 weeks before their due date launching the family into a whirlwind of medical procedures and a lengthy stay in the hospitals special care unit.

Suffering from many conditions that required specialist after specialist, Sophia and Olivia were diagnosed with apraxia and autism in 2007. Both conditions significantly hinder communication, particularly in public, making school a minefield of stress. These diagnoses also brought with them sensory processing disorder, central auditory processing disorder, lack of co-ordination in both fine and gross motor control and neuro developmental issues, as well as ongoing dietary and physical conditions.

The overwhelming emotional and financial burden resulted in the breakdown of the couple’s marriage, and the loss of Nilissa’s business and house in 2010. In the ensuing six years, Nilissa has continued specialised therapy as best she can although the level of interventionist programs in Australia is minimal.

“In Australia we have no specialised school that can offer intensive, individual programs specific to a child’s needs,” said Nilissa. “And the therapists are few and far between that really specialise in apraxia, autism and all of the other related disorders that come with this diagnosis. It’s also an unfortunate fact that the amount of services you can access comes down to what you can afford.”

Through the interest and hard work of local Lions Club member Barbara, the Forest Lake Lions Club have secured a $22,000 grant through the Australian Lions Foundation, for Nilissa to take Sophia and Olivia to a school in Florida USA. The grant will cover the costs of visas, flights, insurance and accommodation for the first six months.

The school runs a range of scientifically proven therapies which they combined into a specific intensive individual program which will address each of the girl’s needs.

More funds are needed in order for Nilissa to provide for herself and her daughters for the remaining six months until Nilissa can obtain a working visa in the USA after 12 months residency.

One of our club members, Wayne Hartig recently celebrated 30 years in Lions. Wayne joined the Lions Club of Camp Hill (now the Lions Club of Carindale/Camp Hill) in 1986. In 1993, Wayne along with some others passionate about Lions chartered the Lions Club of Forest Lake.

I asked Wayne some questions about his time in Lions.

Kim: What encouraged you to join at such a young age?

Wayne: My wife. She thought I needed something else in my life!

Kim: What are the some of the interesting projects you have worked on?

Wayne: Camp Hill Australian Bi-Centennial Celebrations, the Forest Lake Spring Festival and the Forest Lake ‘Lark at the Lake Raft Race’.

Kim: What would you tell prospective members about being a member of a Lions club?

Wayne: It’s all about friendship and, of course, working together in harmony for our local community.

Forest Lake Men’s Shed Update

by Steve Bruford We had two big days collecting signatures supporting the establishment of our men’s shed.

Mid August we were in the shopping centre, where we collected around 900 signatures. We also spent a Sunday morning at the Grand Ave Markets and gathered around 80 more signatures. At the time of writing, the current number of total signatures is 1400, and we are optimistic that we will reach 2000 before presenting the petitions to the Member for Algester Leeanne Enoch who is a big supporter of ours, as are Councillor Charles Strunk and the newly elected Member for Oxley Milton Dick. We thank them all for their ongoing support and assistance towards our goal.

Calling all volunteers The Forest Lake Uniting Church are looking for people to volunteer to work in their Op Shop which will be open soon.

enjamin Franklin once said â&#x20AC;&#x153;Out of adversity comes opportunityâ&#x20AC;? and that is certainly true for the founding members of Making a Difference - Brisbane (MaD). MaD is a non funded, not for profit community group that was formed after the 2011 Brisbane floods.

Many of the MaD team met during the flood crisis when the need to help families who lost everything was paramount. Members adopted families and took care of all their needs including helping them set up their new homes.

When the need for urgent help was essentially finished, some of those who were helping decided to continue assisting others in the community such as victims of domestic violence, disadvantaged and the homeless. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our journey so far has been amazing,â&#x20AC;? said founder and manager Denise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have seen the best and the very worst of people, however, we have never been discouraged.

Our support from the huge numbers of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;likersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on our page is nothing less than incredible, and without them we could not achieve what we do. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our mission is to support and provide help for anyone in need. Our passion is the homeless and we provide a backpack full of toiletries, snacks, blankets, scarves etc. We literally have provided thousands of backpacks since we began in 2012 as well as assisting survivors of domestic violence with household goods and pamper baskets for a special treat for in need families. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also assist other community groups who are also not for profit or have no funding.

We never judge a persons circumstances as we know being homeless is only two pay packets away if something goes haywire for any one of us.â&#x20AC;?

The MaD team also regularly participate in homeless street feeds by handing out toiletries, towels, snacks, scarves, clothing and other essentials as well as contributing to more well known charities that are hands on with helping the homeless. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We post up on our facebook page what our needs are. For example, if we have a client who needs household items, we post up what is required and usually have a huge response. We pick up the donations, sort them and deliver to the client. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also hold continual toiletry appeals throughout the year and we have a core list of items that go into our backpacks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our motto is a hand up not a hand out. The homeless prefer to stay out of the limelight.

They are rarely greedy and are so very grateful. To participate in a street feed and see their faces when you hand them a backpack, words cannot describe. The generosity of our supporters who time after time keep giving allow us to follow our dream.â&#x20AC;?

Monthly Update

Montville was the venue for The Forest Lake 50 Plus Club August 3rd outing. Along the way we had a morning tea stop at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve at Maleny with delicious home baked goodies being the main attraction.

With everyone suitably fed and watered, we headed to Montville for a great days shopping and lunch was left up to everyone’s own discretion so as not to take too much time out of their day.

With empty pockets and bags full of goodies, it was time to board our Concorde Coach and make our way home to Forest Lake. All the ladies agreed they had a wonderful day’s shopping and the weather at Montville was warm and no wind; a very pleasant day indeed.

This month, the Club’s ‘Extra Activity‘ was held at the Blue Fin at Inala on August 10th for lunch. There were over 30 members attending and as usual there was lots of good humour and in particular, talk about our upcoming Train Trip to Longreach and the activities out there with Aussie Outback Tours in early September.

The Forest Lake 50 Plus Club wishes to acknowledge its support from the Heritage Community Branch, Forest Lake.

The Brisbane Line - fact or fiction?

The story of Brisbane Line is still raised from time to time. There are as many supporters that it was true as there are who are confident that it was a rumour.

In late 1941 and early 1942, a Japanese invasion of Australia seemed imminent. One potential solution to this threat was the establishment of a military line across Australia from Brisbane to Adelaide. Territory south of this line would be defended; the rest of the country would be abandoned.

Although never implemented, not surprisingly the Brisbane Line remains to this day a controversial and sensitive topic in Australia, with any suggestion of treachery vehemently refuted. A number of people examined the possibility of a collaboration between Japanese intelligence and prominent sections of the Australian ruling class.

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, trading links between Japan and Australia had flourished and, as a result, many within Sydney’s business establishment began to look favourably upon increasing Japanese influence at the expense of British interests.

Through a fresh examination of contemporary sources and drawing on the testimony of Ken Cook, an anti-fascist counter-intelligence agent during this period, a fascinating story of collaboration, conspiracy and betrayal was examined - a story which is still being denied today. My father-in-law, a prominent grazier from the North Queensland Gulf Country, told me that as a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) he received official advice from Government sources that in the event of an invasion he was to implement a ‘scorched earth’ policy which involved poisoning the water holes, upon which his cattle depended; burning down the homestead and all outbuildings, destroying windmills and then to retreat to Brisbane with his family comprising at that time his wife and four daughters. My mother-in-law said that if the Japanese had invaded by surprise that she had planned to poison herself and her daughters.

I tell this story only to illustrate that people of the North had very real fears that an invasion was imminent. I ask the question that if there was no Brisbane Line, why would the North Queensland grazing families have been advised to take action herein outlined?

Celebrating 10yrs local success In today’s economical climate, succeeding in reaching a tenth birthday is quite an achievement and a milestone worth celebrating.

Marilyn Thurtell, owner of MTR Property Group, and her staff, hosted an evening in the new Forest Lake Community Hall recently to mark this special occasion.

Beginning her career in 2002 with PRDnationwide, Marilyn was soon winning awards and the dream to one day open her own agency in Forest Lake became a reality in August 2006.

“As we were setting up the office ten years ago, I remember having a moment of thinking - what on earth am I doing? I have no experience in running an office, Gaye, my cousin, and Katrina, my son’s girlfriend, whilst lovely people, had no experience on what we were about to embark upon,” said Marilyn. “And I was just good at listing and selling real estate.

“I picked myself up and from that moment decided not to think about what was ahead, that was way too overwhelming but just to go ahead and do it! Here we are 10 years old and for almost two years are the number one selling agency in Forest Lake and a finalist four years in a row for the REIQ excellence awards. Words cannot explain how proud I am of those achievements and how proud I am of my staff.”

Since that day ten years ago, the staff has grown to a team of eight, consisting of Sales and Marketing Consultants Lauraine Woodhead and Shari Stewart, Senior Property Manager Jaclyn Lazarou, Reception and Sales Support Melissa Morrison, Executive Administrator Andrea Inmon, Administrator and Finance Manager Krystal Parrington, and Administration Assistant Maddie McKenna.

The many guests, including Leeanne Enoch MP, Tarnya Smith MP, Councillor Charles Strunk and Councillor Angela OwenTaylor enjoyed entertainment from St John’s Anglican College quartet as well as refreshments served by hospitality students from the College. And for that special touch, each guest went home with a designer MTR cupcake and engraved wine glass.

“It was humbling to be joined on the night by so many people who mean so much to me. My family, amazing staff and the brilliant people we work with day to day have made the last 10 years so enjoyable. Forest Lake really is such a beautiful place to be.”

Most of you will have heard of the term ‘bracket creep’. It refers to the fact that with inflation and, hopefully some corresponding adjustments to salaries, one’s income can creep into a higher marginal tax bracket because the thresholds for tax rates haven’t changed. In effect, this makes one’s real after tax income not quite as good as it seemed when the increase was given.

Some adjustments have been made to tax rates and thresholds over the years, but what is especially interesting is the ‘creep’ that occurs with elimination of tax offsets and no changes to deductible expenses etc.

For example, does anyone know how long the ‘standard’ maximum deduction, if applicable, for uniforms has been set at $150? I don’t readily recall, but I seem to remember it hasn’t changed since at least the turn of the century. Of course, we are still paying the same for laundry powder, new washing machines and tumble dryers as we paid some sixteen years ago, aren’t we!

The ‘standard’ deduction for work related expenses without receipts, provided of course you can reasonably demonstrate you did incur the expense, has probably not changed from $300 for a similar amount of time.

However, there are many other tax adjustments in the form of offsets that have disappeared over time. Because their disappearing over the horizon occurs on a gradual incremental basis, we tend to be a little annoyed for a short time when a relevant one impacts on us on an individual basis, but I wonder if anyone has ever considered the cumulative effect. A few spring to mind such as: • the dependent spouse offset • mature age tax offset • medical expense offset (not to mention the means testing of private health insurance rebates in recent years and changes to eligible expenses) • changes to the entrepreneur’s tax offset (due to it supposedly being too complicated!)

Even where some tax offsets have remained, such as the senior and pensioner tax offset, or SAPTO, the amount of the offset has not changed over time and still remains at a maximum of $2,230 for individuals, or $1,602 for each member of a couple. Admittedly, there has been some change to the income thresholds at which these offsets begin to be phased out.

Whenever changes occur at Federal Budget time, as they invariably do, perhaps we should all join in unison and sing “Another one bites the dust”!

With a fresh start to the day on 24 July, 28 golfers assembled for the yearly Ellis Lalor Trophy golf day held at Jindalee Golf Club. Golfers were eager to get started at the first tee with the weather to top 30 degrees, not bad for winter, in hope of shooting a great round for the day.

Looking at the results, the perfect weather paid off for some with some very happy golfers returning to the 19th hole.

The results from the day were: A Grade Winner Jason Lee and Runner Up Gil Vargas, B Grade Winner Don Pickwick and Runner Up Terry Noy, C Grade Winner Phil King and Runner Up Craig McGuire. Longest Drive Winners who had their weeties for breakfast were A Grade Colin Brooke, B Grade Don Pickwick, C Grade Dani Dvornicich and the Ladies Winner Jean O’Brien. Approach Shot Winner Don Pickwick (he was sure having a great day). Nearest the Pin Winners with their eye on the hole were 4th Hole Trevor Doneman and 17th Hole Terry Noy. The Ellis Lalor trophy winner was Don Pickwick.

Well, how amazing were the Olympics? We love it in our house and it was always on the TV. For the first time in a long time, since 1924 in fact, Rugby Union was part of it – R UGBY specifically, the hottest trend in Rugby right now, the Sevens.

Fast paced action is the hallmark of Sevens and the Olympics did not disappoint. Our Aussie Women’s team, winners of the World Cup going in and red hot favourites, met the pressure and came home gold medal winners, against arch rival, New Zealand. These moments have only served to highlight for the world what we at the Wasps know so well: how great the game of Rugby Union is! The competition itself in Rio was widely applauded and one of the most popular sports at these Games. Sevens Rugby has cemented itself as the sport to watch at the Olympics in Tokyo in four years time.

One of the ads that has, I think, been noteworthy, has been the Woolworths one about ‘how you pick a champion’. It shows so c l e a r l y, a l o n g w i t h a l l the personal stories we hear behind the athletes during telecasts, that all the champions we see were once children, just like the ones watching.

Wi t h o u t a d u l t s a r o u n d them to nurture the seed of inspiration and passion for a sport, with all those early mornings and busy weekends, all the fundraising for representative places and travelling for competitions – without those sacrifices and the child’s commitment and enthusiasm – it would remain a wish. I love the fact that children can see the Olympics, see these champions were once a kid just like them and begin to dream big things for themselves.

Here at the Wasps we are all about supporting kids to be all they can be through sport. They might just love rugby their whole lives: participate, be a fan, help their local clubs; or they just might take it all the way to lift a medal on an Olympic podium. The joy of my job is seeing kids discover something they love, give it their all and work as a team, find new friends and a place where they feel encouraged and belong. That is what the best of sport, especially for children, is all about. We also pride ourselves on being a place where the whole family can share the journey and find a place they can contribute, whatever their age or role, to a positive and embracing community.

Forest Lake Rotary Club update

by Alan Greig Bruce Clark, President of the Rotary Club of Forest Lake, advised members at a recent meeting that the Club had experienced a successful year in 1915/16 by raising more than $20 000 to help local community projects.

Assistance was provided to the following projects: • $7000 was provided to upgrade ceiling fans in the Calamvale venue where annual citizenship ceremonies are held.

More than 2,000 people had registered for the September Citizenship Ceremony.

• $3000 was contributed to the Rotary Foundation and $2000 to the Polio Plus Program to eradicate polio throughout the world.

• Project Love and Care was provided with $2000. This project provided toiletry kits to children at risk and out of care.

• The Knitters Project providing knitted articles for premature babies and for people in aged care were provided with $2500 to purchase wool.

• $2000 was donated to Australian Rotary health for medical research.

• $1200 to selected youth for Rotary Youth Development Programs (RYLA and RYPEN).

• Invested in the Dream Cricket Program which helps build confidence and self esteem for children in years three to six with physical, sensory and/or intellectual disabilities. Local organisations interested in learning more about Dream Cricket should contact the Forest Lake Rotary Club.

• Ray White’s ‘Little Ray of Giving’ program was also provided with $250.

Additionally, Mr. Clark said, “I should thank all members and friends of Rotary for the time and effort they give in raising funds to assist the local community, in home care, hospital visits and Blue Care. I think that given our small membership we, as a Club, certainly punch above our weight.”

Algester Update As the local member, seeing the community come together to support our local schools fills me with great pride.

Thank you to everyone who came along to this year’s Grand Avenue State School Ekka Fun Day. It was great to see more than 5000 people turn out to join the fun and I congratulate the Grand Avenue State School P&C on a job well done. I was proud to sponsor the P&C BBQ and with the help of a group of enthusiastic volunteers the BBQ raised $4200 for the school.

Thanks also go to local councillor Charles Strunk and Federal Member for Oxley Milton Dick who joined me on the BBQ and each put in stellar shifts.

The Ekka Fun Day was a great success and more than $30,000 was raised for the school to put towards a new playground for Year 3 classes.

I also congratulate Forest Lake High School students who are now world record holders!

The school played their part in setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest practical science lesson as part of National Science Week activities.

As Science Minister and Member for Algester, I was encouraged to see our local students so engaged in, and excited by, science.

Greater engagement in science is going to be critical for the knowledge-based jobs of the future and it is import our students are exposed to the opportunities a career in science can present. In Parliament last month I launched the Engaging in Science Grants program to help organisations promote science and science-based activities right around the state.

The program is open now. I would encourage anyone in the local community who has an event they would like to promote to visit advance.qld.gov.au/esg to apply.

As we see a few early tick paralysis cases coming into the clinic, we always look at the best products to offer our clients for their pets to prevent these life threatening situations developing.

Last year we had two very effective, safe and easy long acting oral products released for dogs. These products, a monthly and a three monthly form, have been widely used for flea and tick control since then.

From a vet’s perspective, we are always looking for the most effective way of combining all parasite control into an easy routine.

For dogs, there are two favourite routines. The first combines an annual heart worm injection with three monthly stomach worm, flea and tick treatment. The second is a monthly routine using tablets or spot-ons that cover all parasites. Combination products are desirable and some interesting combinations are in the pipeline. Your vet will keep you informed about new products coming out as they are released.

As always, cats are not as easy as dogs with medication and there is a big difference in what we would advise for a cat that goes outside and a cat that is completely inside. Cats normally do not tolerate dog products and can be difficult to medicate. Easy to administer products are a must for cats. For cats that are tricky to medicate, I have always favoured spot-ons which are very effective for most things except ticks.

An effective long acting tick and flea collar is about to be released that will change all of that. This combined with a monthly spot-on should give us the best parasite control for cats we ever have had.

Your vet will again advise you on this and what they think is the best combination of products for your pet’s needs.

Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin Welcome to our September column. Yes, it’s springtime and a wonderful time of the year.

Important information - due to renovations and availability of our usual meeting room at lions soccer club we have been asked to change our meeting dates for September (Thursday 15th), October (Thursday 13th) and November (Thursday 10th). The Annual General Meeting follows the regular monthly meeting this month. Plenty of nominations for Management Committee. Meeting Place - Lions Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands. 9.30am sign in for a 10am start. Meeting entry includes morning tea.

At the August meeting we celebrated our 5th Birthday. It was also the first opportunity for our Branch to meet new CEO Ms Dagmar Parsons who joined in the celebrations and was able to stay for lunch. Eighty-nine members and visitors came along to celebrate. Special guests including Milton Dick MP and Cr Charles Strunk joined President Dan Baldwin, Ms Parsons, Dr Marjorie Green and Ms Vera Somerwil in the cake cutting. We all thoroughly enjoyed the well-known songs sung by The Lake Tones, members of the Forest Lake Community Choir. A very special thank you to this happy and talented group of people for their performance.

It was also an opportunity to display the Farmer’s Father’s Day Appreciation Packs to be sent out to Farmers in the Balonne Shire just before Father’s Day. Forty seven farmers have been identified as really doing it tough so much so that they have been required to send family members off their farms to go and live with family or friends elsewhere. Businesses local and as far afield as Toowoomba have contributed to the Farmer’s packs.

A sample of Welcome Starter packs for the families coming to Brisbane for their child or children’s cancer treatment at Lady Cilento Hospital was also on display for members to see what their contributions to both these packs have helped purchase. A huge effort and thank you to all who contributed.

Christmas in July Lunch at the Old Courthouse Cleveland was a great day. Perfect weather with so many of us enjoying a morning tea at Manly on the foreshore before heading to the Old Courthouse for a lovely gathering, great company and beautiful food. There was lots of joy and laughter from the two busloads of people who were delighted when on arrival Santa handed out hand-made gifts to everyone. Thank you Santa and your two lovely helpers who made these lovely gifts.

Family Focus

Twelve months ago, I had the extraordinary opportunity to go to Haiti to see the amazing work Compassion do in lifting young people out of poverty. It was a humbling experience in many ways but one facet, in particular, was that I realised how poor I was at adjusting to different cultures.

Language became a problem at times and, on one particular occasion, I found myself in an awkward situation when trying to catch the attention of one little child at a community centre. We were all playing on the ground with the kids but when I called one of the kids over with my hand, he became upset. I didn’t realise that the hand gesture I was using (though innocent in the Australian context) was actually the way you called a dog to yourself in other parts of the world. Though I was trying my best to be kind, I had actually insulted this kid! Thanks to the grace and help of the staff, the situation was resolved and we had a great time. But, it reminded me that sometimes we can have the best intentions but blow it because of a break-down in communication.

This can be particularly true in parenting, can’t it? It always amazes me about our four kids that, though they come from the same mother and father, they have such different personalities and receive love in different ways – one child thrives on affirming words, while another just wants your time, while another lives for hugs, and so on.

As parents and family members, we need to spend the time to work out what each others ‘love language’ is (a coin termed by Gary D. Chapman in his book Five Love Languages).

Take, for example, the couple where the wife loves quality time but the husband loves affirming words. The husband may say lots of lovely things to his wife (which she will, no doubt, appreciate) but all she really wants is for him to spend some time with her.

It’s not through a lack of love that the message fails to get through – we’re just talking in different languages.

The Bible rejoices in how uniquely beautiful God has made everyone (“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Ps 139:14) and part of revelling in this wonderful uniqueness is discovering how to best express love to those closest to us.

As we have discovered this concept in our family, we have come to rejoice in how uniquely wonderful God has made each of our children, in how they give and receive love. It is a joyful and enriching journey of discovery and I encourage you to go on it with your family.

Garden Group

Welcome to spring! This is the season we have been waiting for as our gardens spring into life revealing the colours of the flowers we planted and, hopefully, a couple of surprises. September also brings us Father’s Day, Carnival of Flowers, footy finals, and many clubs exhibiting their flowers at upcoming gardening shows in the Auditorium at Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. One show I can recommend is the Geranium & Pelargonium Annual Spectacular on the 24 & 25 September’16. Did you have the opportunity to visit the horticultural display at the Ekka? From all reports there were many more displays and the ‘fairies in the garden’ were popular with all visitors.

There are plenty of enjoyable tasks to do in the garden this month.

It’s time to feed your azaleas and established fruit trees and don’t forget to spray your hibiscus to control the hibiscus beetle. Why not plant some natives plants to attract bird life into your garden? Also, it’s a good time to re-plant the pups from your bromeliads and don’t forget to give the indoor plants extra water as the weather warms up.

Last month, we held our Annual General Meeting and, after seven years as President, I decided it was time to standdown. I wish to thank both past and present committee members for their support over the past seven years. The new president is Jill Lowe and I’m confident she will guide the club ‘onwards and upwards’ in the coming years.

This month’s bus trip is on Tuesday 13 September when we will visit the six acre Bominda Garden at Rosevale, lunch at the Marburg Hotel and spend the afternoon at Larsen’s Bulbs. Another fun-filled day and all entry fees, lunch and morning and afternoon teas are included in the price of $50 for members and $60 for visitors. Did you know that growing lemon grass will repel ants and cats! Also Chives grown at the base of fruit trees will help to deter climbing insects and if grown amongst roses, chives will help to deter aphids, borers and spider mites.

This month, on 6 September, our guest speaker will be Claire Bickle discussing eco organics. This is a great opportunity to meet and chat with Claire.

Our guest speaker on 4 October will be Carol Kerkin. We have visited Carol’s garden on past bus trips. Carol will let us in on all the secrets of having a cottage garden. These two meetings should not be missed.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!

RICHLANDS SCOUT GROUP UPDATE

August has been a busy month for the Richlands - Forest Lake Scout Group. Our Scout section started the month with a water activities weekend, learning how to canoe and kayak, before turning their attention to hunting Pokemon. They have also been building their skills with cooking and fire nights at the den. Our more experienced Scouts also attended our Cub Skills Camp.

During this camp the Scouts helped to teach the Cub Scouts all about fire safety and lighting fires, camp cooking, navigation, water purification and camping in general. All of the Cubs also did a first aid course and many of them also stayed back on Sunday for a Landcare course and tree planting with Moreton Region Scouts.

Our youngest section, Joeys, hosted a campfire night with Sherwood Joeys, a recycling night with Salisbury Joeys and all sections enjoyed learning about and handling snakes when the reptile show visited us for the night. Of course, Scouting is also about giving back to the community and we were happy to help out the Inala Bushcare Group with a morning working at Kev Hooper Park Inala. We would also like to specifically than one of our newest Scouts, Isaac Price, for his dedication and enthusiasm in volunteering to help with our stall at the Grand Avenue State School Ekka Fun Day. All our sections are growing, with more young people joining us and enjoying the benefits of Scouting every week.

Scouting is not just for the young though, and we are always happy to hear from adults interested in volunteering who would be keen to enjoy the adventure and fun that is Scouting.

What a busy month it has been!

First of all, I am proud to announce that after two years of inactivity, the Cascades in Forest Lake are flowing once again. As well as carrying out vital maintenance work on this important local landmark, Council officers installed a new suction head in the lake, so the Cascades will now run uninterrupted without being fowled with weeds. These same officers are also in the process of repairing the Dragon water feature near the boat ramp on the lake. Thank you to all those residents that brought this to my attention during my election campaign, it is truly great to see (and hear!) the water running again.

This month also saw Leeanne Enoch MP, Milton Dick MP and myself celebrate the Ekka holiday at the Grand Avenue Ekka Fun Day. We spent the day cooking up a storm in support of the P&C. A big congratulations must go out to P&C President Donna Clark, her Organising Committee and all the volunteers for running such a massive, successful event. Well done!

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d also like to give a special thank you to all those committed Forest Lake residents who took the time out on a Saturday morning to help clean up litter around the Forest Lake Parklands. Together we collected several bags of rubbish, and thousands of cigarette butts. It is fantastic to see so many people come together to give back to their community.

Last of all, I am amazed with the response so far to our petitions regarding changes to the pensioner water remission and rates increases. We have received several hundred signatures in the past few weeks from residents concerned about the changes taking place. If you would like to sign these petitions, please feel free to drop by my office at the Inala Library building and my friendly staff will help you out.
