Former library books on sale at FOILS fundraiser
John-Paul Goodwin prepares the books for eager bargain hunters at the next FOILS book sale. Avid readers will be able to stock up on some new reading material when the Friends of Ipswich Library Service (FOILS) hosts its next book sale this weekend on April 18. The sale will run from 9am to 11.30am in the courtyard on the ground floor of the Ipswich Central Library and will feature a selection of library books no longer needed by the Ipswich Libraries. The Ipswich Library regularly reviews its resources and this was one way in which materials which were no longer needed could be recycled. Multiple copies of a book are needed when a title is first released due to community demand but as time goes on less copies are being borrowed so the extra ones are no longer needed. The sale items will include a selection of fiction titles across all genres as well as a large range of non-fiction across all subject areas. There will also be a small selection of magazines and children’s resources available. Money raised from the sale will go towards meeting the cost of future planned FOILS events such as High Tea with Friends on May 29 and Trivia with Friends on June 10. FOILS is an enthusiastic group of people who work to support, extend and promote Ipswich Libraries. FOILS’ members meet from 5pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month in Study Room 2 on Level 1 of the Ipswich Central Library, 40 South St, Ipswich and people are welcome to attend. Further information about the sale and FOILS is available by calling 3810 6755 or visiting the library website at www.library.ipswich.qld.gov.au.
Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis I’ve been thinking a lot about noise lately. Noise has the ability to calm by way of relaxing music or a soothing voice; it can startle eg a loud unexpected bang; it can irritate like a barking dog or dripping tap. Our relationship with noise is dependent on our mood usually. I have memories of my mother saying, usually towards the end of the long Christmas school holidays, that she just needed some ‘quiet’, and now I find myself saying a similar thing! It was interesting to note that the dictionary definition of noise included this: Informal. extraneous, irrelevant, or meaningless facts, information, statistics, etc. There is so much more of this type of noise these days, isn’t there? I find increasingly that when I feel I need some quiet, I’m hankering to escape the ‘noise’ of the world; to take myself off where there is no internet connection and no traffic or people. We are bombarded with noise now. Our inboxes are filled with ‘noise’ - extraneous, irrelevant, meaningless facts and information. Our social media sites, as well as giving us updates on our friends, also deals out an unhealthy amount of noise. And, for me, anyway, that noise can be so loud that it drowns out the noise we do want to hear. We get so used to the white noise filling our heads that we miss out on other important sounds. We miss the sound of a friend, desperate for connection because we end up skimming our facebook newsfeed due to all the other noise. We miss the sound of our children, begging us to play, to notice them, to really see them, in the midst of our phones pinging and beeping with emails and text messages. And we miss the sound of our own souls screaming for attention in a world noisy with spiritual options, self-help mantras and conflicting dogma. We are so overcome with noise that we miss the most important sounds of all. It’s a challenge to listen when so much noise surrounds us. It’s hard to decipher the sounds we should listen to and the sounds we should ignore. But, it is possible. It just may take some decision making, followed up with some discipline. At the beginning of the year, I ‘unsubscribed’ from many newsletters, blogs and websites. There was nothing wrong, per se, with those things, it was simply too much noise. And you know what, I haven’t missed them! Not one bit. In fact, it’s been quite the opposite. I can feel myself mentally exhaling in relief that my inbox is now uncluttered and ‘less’ than it used to be. And that’s just a start. I’ve been paring down in other ways too - picking my phone up less, turning the TV on less, checking facebook less. As a result, I’m thinking more, connecting more, reading more - enjoying more! That old maxim really is true - less is more. Is there too much noise in your life? What sounds are you missing out on because of it? Maybe it’s time to start tuning in to what really matters and tuning out the rest.

Cat fights can occur in any area but our surgery sees a lot of cat fight injuries in Forest Lake. This may be due to the population of Forest Lake and the high pet ownership in the area. Fighting is more common when new residents come to Forest Lake with their cats or if residents acquire a new cat. Inside every cuddly kitty there may be a ferocious, territorial lion! The good news is that not all cats fight. The following points are suggestions on how to minimise fighting between your cats. • Tom Cats will fight more and will roam into other cat’s territory regularly. All male cats should be desexed at five to six months of age before these patterns develop. • Cats are nocturnal and are naturally more aggressive at night. Keeping cats in at night, or all the time, is a simple way of preventing contact with other cats (and other dangers). Cat enclosures are also a good idea if practical. • Some cats (even female cats) are more aggressive than others. Behaviour modifying drugs can be used to reduce uncontrollable aggression. Should your cat get in a fight despite taking all the above precautions, you should consider the following problems that can occur. Cats inflict deep wounds by biting with their canines. These wounds are not obvious as they are punctures and can be hidden by hair. They will normally cause severe abscesses as soon as 24 hours after the fight, or longer depending on the type of germ in the wound. If your cat is in pain, is cranky or has obvious wounds, veterinary attention should be sought and antibiotic treatment started. Scratches from razor sharp claws rarely get infected, but eye damage can occur. If you do not notice a wound or an early abscess developing, pain, swelling and illness will become apparent over a few days and sometimes large areas of skin will lift off. If your cat is a chronic fighter and begins to lose weight and suffer declining health, a FIV (Cat AIDS) test should be requested. If your cat has to live outside, a FIV vaccination is now available for protection. For more information on any of these points, please contact your local vet.
Runners celebrate two years The first parkrun started in Australia only four years ago and there are now 111 parkruns scattered around Australia, with the biggest proportion being in Southeast Queensland. An international not for profit organisation that started in London in 2004, parkruns are held in the UK, Denmark Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Russia and South Africa. The Augustine Heights parkrun began two years ago with Joanne Black and Paula Harper at the helm. When Paula retired from her role after the first year, Joanne’s husband, Johnny, stepped in and joined his wife as co-directors of the weekly event.

On Wednesday evening, 18 March, the Inauguration Service for the Provisional Anglican Parish of Springfield was held in the Multipurpose Centre on the Secondary Campus. During the Service, Archbishop Dr Phillip Aspinall commissioned Reverend Graham Dorman as Priest-in-Charge.With more than 100 people in attendance, and the positiveness that was clearly evident, the future of the Parish seems assured. The notion of an Anglican worshipping congregation using the College as a base has been a work in progress for the past three years and gathered great momentum during 2014. Services are held each Saturday in the Multipurpose Centre commencing at 5.00pm, with all members of the College and wider community most welcome. The College is very keen to be involved in, and contribute to, the growth and development of Greater Springfield. The relationship with the Provisional Parish adds yet another dimension to this desire. There is also great excitement within the College community with just over 60 students, staff and parents about to embark on their tour to France and Gallipoli. The tour group will fly into Paris, visit a range of World War landmarks including
Page 6 - April 2015 - The Greater Springfield Times
Tyne Cot Cemetery and Hill 60, attend a Dawn Service at Villers Bretonneux, spend two days sightseeing in Paris, then fly into Instanbul, before travelling to Gallipoli and flying back to Australia via Singapore. This fourteen day tour will undoubtedly provide an amazing learning experience for all concerned, many of whom have not travelled overseas before. The Creative Arts Department are also, at present, extremely busy as they gear up for the Official Opening of the Creative Arts Precinct on Friday, 15 May. The Centre will be officially opened by world renowned musician James Morrison. The Creative Arts Precinct is already proving to be a wonderful host for a range of Creative Arts activities, including the College’s annual Art Show and Inter-Clan Creative Arts Festival. Running in tandem with the Creative Arts activities outlined above, students and staff are also very busy rehearsing for the 2015 College production of the Musical ‘Oliver’. More than 60 students from across both Campuses, as well as ten staff, will be involved in this year’s production. While a school production of this type is a massive undertaking every two years, it is well accepted that some of the richest school learning experiences students have, come from involvement in such activities. Cancer Council Queensland is calling on all young people – youth groups, primary, secondary and university students – to lace up and take part in Queensland’s very first Youth Relay For Life! The inaugural Cancer Council Queensland event will be held in Mount Gravatt on August 15-16, 2015, at Mount Gravatt’s Griffith University Campus and is aimed at young people, aged between five and 25. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift encouraged young people to unite in the fight and get behind the inspirational event. “Join Relay For Life and be part of something special – Relay offers the perfect opportunity to give back to your community and help make a difference to all Queenslanders affected by cancer,” Ms Clift said. “The young people of today are the leaders of tomorrow, they have so much potential and energy to offer and we hope they will use that to impact the lives of others. “By introducing the Youth Relay For Life, we offer a platform in which young people can step up, take action and know that they have the skills to create change. “With a range of fun and entertaining activities on offer, to emotional and empowering ceremonies being held, Relay for Life truly is an experience not to be missed, and we challenge people of all ages and fitness levels to join in.” Relay For Life is an 18 hour event involving teams of up to 15 people keeping a baton moving in a relay style walk or run overnight, in support of the one in two Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. For those wanting something earlier than the August event and a little closer to home, the Ipswich Relay for Life will be on May 23-24 at Bill Paterson Oval, Limestone Park and is open for all ages to participate. This is the 12th Ipswich Relay and is one of the largest Relay’s in South East Queensland, with about 100 teams expected to take part this year. Entry for Relay For Life is just $15 for Under 18s and $20 for adults, which includes a purple shirt and breakfast at the event. To register a team, visit www.relayforlife.org.au or phone the Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

Lucky Lucy found by local bush walker Meet Lucy. Her journey of recovery at the RSPCA has been nothing short of a miracle. At just 10 months of age, Lucy was found in the Collingwood Park bushland, severely beaten around her head and body and left for dead. Luckily for Lucy, a local bushwalker found her in need of help and contacted the RSPCA 1300 ANIMAL Emergency Hotline. The distress call was one of over 110,000 that the RSPCA receives every year for animal emergencies. Within minutes of receiving the call, the RSPCA Animal Ambulance team rushed to assist Lucy. She was then transported to the RSPCA Animal Emergency Hospital for urgent vet care. Lucy had such significant injuries, she was lucky to be found in time and the RSPCA vets weren’t even sure she would make it through the night. Lucy was referred to a specialist orthopaedic surgeon for surgical repair of her leg and skull fractures. Her surgery went well and despite all odds, this brave girl made it through her ordeal. She was then given round-theclock care in the RSPCA Animal Emergency Hospital. Within days, Lucy was quickly responding to her team of dedicated carers with short tail wags and was able to stand and walk a short distance. It was a long road to recovery in a foster care home while Lucy’s injuries healed. Lucy’s story spread far and wide and thanks to the generous support of the community and donations to the RSPCA to help cover the cost of her care and treatment, this courageous girl got her second chance. Lucy’s new parents, Debbie and Warren, had seen her story on the news and desperately wanted to give Lucy the home she deserved. They regularly enquired at the RSPCA about her progress and were delighted when she was finally able to be adopted, and they were selected as her new family. “She’s so affectionate and so trusting, which is amazing after what she went through,” Debbie said. Lucy now enjoys life alongside her new canine brother Max. Today, the only lasting reminder of Lucy’s ordeal is poor vision and hearing in her left eye and ear. If you would like to support animals just like Lucy there are many ways you can help the RSPCA, from donating, adopting, volunteering, foster caring and more. Visit the RSPCA website at www.rspcaqld.org.au to see how you can help. If you have information about what happened to Lucy at the end of July 2014 please contact the RSPCA Inspectorate on 1300 264 625 or email cruelty_complaints@rspcaqld.org.au.

2015 Ipswich Poetry Feast now open The 13th annual Ipswich Poetry Feast, an international poetry writing competition, was formally launched recently at breakfast at Henry Lawson Park in Walloon. The event was created after Ipswich author Judith Baker revealed the town’s local connection to literary legend Henry Lawson in 1999. In 1891, Lawson was so captivated by the sad but true tale of young sisters Bridget Kate and Mary Jane Broderick who drowned in a waterhole at Walloon, that he immortalised them in his poem The Babies of Walloon. Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson and Ipswich Poetry Feast Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said that the competition was a major component of the Ipswich Poetry Feast and a great way for people all around Australia to get involved in poetry. “Since its establishment, the Ipswich Poetry Feast has gone from strength to strength and inspired some fantastic poets from all across Australia and overseas to take part, Cr Pahlke said. “This competition gets bigger each year and it’s always thrilling to see the high calibre of the talent and interest it attracts. The 13th annual international poetry competition offers a total prize value of more than $7800 and is open to anyone from the age of five years, with more than 1000 entries from people of all ages and backgrounds anticipated. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the competition had unearthed a wealth of talented poets from around Australia and overseas but particularly from within Ipswich. “It has always been wonderful to witness the number of people simply having a go and lodging an entry for the Ipswich Poetry Feast, Cr Pisasale said. “We have a strong group of entrants who try their hand each year at the competition. “Our judging panel always find it extremely challenging to come up with the annual list of winners and I’m sure this year’s competition will once again deliver a flood of quality entries. I encourage all poetry enthusiasts to put pen to paper and take part in this year’s competition. If you have an interest in poetry writing then this is the competition for you. Entries for the 2015 Ipswich Poetry Feast will close on July 24. Further information about the Ipswich Poetry Feast events is available from Ipswich Libraries on 3810 6755 or by visiting the Ipswich Poetry Feast website at www.ipswichpoetryfeast.com.au.

Ipswich Film Festival for Youth launches for 2015

pswich’s young people are invited to take part in the third annual Ipswich Film Festival for Youth (IFFY). Ipswich City Council Youth and Seniors Committee Chairperson Councillor Sheila Ireland said since its launch in 2013 IFFY had continued to grow and develop a keen following of Ipswich young people. Participants have until October 2 to lodge their entries in this year’s competition on the theme ‘Hero’. “We believe our young writers and directors will find challenging and interesting ways to interpret this theme, Cr Ireland said. “From superheroes to community heroes to the unsung ones in our own lives, there are numerous ways in which this theme could be highlighted. “We are already looking forward to seeing what the IFFY entrants produce as there has been some wonderfully creative entries submitted over the past two years. IFFY will feature a new category this year – Best Contribution by a School. “We are inviting local schools to work with their students to submit an entry for IFFY and be part of this special new category. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said council would again run IFFY in partnership with a number of sponsors. “Limelight Cinemas, Screen Queensland, Channel 9 and The University of Southern Queensland’s Film and TV Faculty will again be supporting IFFY, Cr Pisasale said. “They were all a special part of IFFY in 2014 and we look forward to joining forces with these sponsors to find Ipswich’s answer to famous Hollywood director Steven Spielberg. “I encourage all Ipswich young people to become involved with IFFY. You can put yourself in the running for one of the great awards on offer simply by having a go and lodging an entry. IFFY will be judged from October 2 to 21 with the winners to be announced on November 13. The awards’ presentation will once again take the form of a red carpet event during which shortlisted films would be showcased on the big screen and an opportunity provided for entrants to meet the judges, sponsors and other fellow film makers. For further details on the competitions terms and conditions and categories please visit the website at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/community/youth/iffy.

Local Dojo with international connections Local karate centre, Shotokan Karate Budokai, in Camira boasts a strong connection with PNG, hosting the team during training for the many competitions coming up. Chief Instructor, Trevor Roberts first met Carl Mari from the PNG karate team in 1997 at the Oceania Games held in Brisbane. “I was coaching the Australian side and Carl and I had a good rapport with each other,” said Trevor. “Three years later Carl came to Brisbane to the University and trained with me for awhile. Then two and a half years ago he rang me up to ask if I would coach the PNG side as PNG are hosts for the Pacific Games this year.” A team of ten arrived in Australia recently to compete at the Queensland Karate Associations Summer Championships, with four members staying back to train at the full time training centre in Camira. “I remember when I was in PNG, training the team and I spotted some guys coming into the Training centre while we were having a break. One had a swollen ankle and I asked Carl if he had come in to apologise for not coming to training earlier. “It turned out, the men had just come in from walking the Kakoda trail and there was ten of them ready to train for two weeks, then they would have walked back. The only shoes they had on where thongs and a bottle of water. These are very tough and resilient guys.” Trevor has travelled extensively with the team; three months ago they attended the Oceania Games in Fiji, and have only just returned from Sydney where the team competed in the Australian Open. The next trip for Trevor and the PNG team will be to New Zealand for their championships.

Greetings. As we continue into autumn with Easter gone for another year, we can also say goodbye to the long hot summer which seemed to go on forever. National Seniors is a membership organization for the over 50’s providing a bi-monthly magazine 50 Something, Benefits Program, Policy and Advocacy and branch activities for members. As such, last month, the day trippers visited the Lion Nathan XXXX brewery at Milton. The brewery has a most interesting place in early Queensland history, which today boasts the very best in automated technology to produce its famous drop. Despite the additional exercise of up and down some steps, all members coped very well. The end of the tour offered other rewards with tastings of the popular and newer ales, a pot of the local brew for those so inclined, and followed by a great lunch in the Ale House. Guest speaker for the March branch meeting was Greg Beard, Mater Foundation. An interesting speaker, Greg gave the early history of the Mater Sisters who came from Ireland and set up the original hospital, the new Lady Cilento’s Children’s Hospital, current research and a hint of what is to come with the opening of the new Mater Hospital at Springfield. There will be more on this at a later date. Bernie Ripoll, Federal Member for Oxley will bring members up to date with the Federal changes for older people at the April 20th meeting. A reminder, the May Morning Coffee club will meet for coffee and cake at the Industry café Redbank at 10.00am on 6th May and the Days Trippers May outing on 12th May will be a train trip to Sandgate, with a look around the local town and lunch before returning home in the afternoon. Visitors are most welcome to attend our day meetings which are held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna. For further information please phone Val Randle, Branch Secretary on 3294 5735.

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR OXLEY
On the 25th of April, 100 years ago, Australian and New Zealand Soldiers landed on a small beach on the Gallipolli Peninsula in Turkey. Many of these men were only teenagers at the time, some as young as 16 years of age. These were not professional soldiers, nor a battle hardened army; these were volunteers who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom and quality of life we enjoy today. It is important to also acknowledge all current and former members of our defence forces for being the brave and resilient representatives of our country every day. Those currently serving, those lost in training, on operation, the wounded, injured and ill. It is important to acknowledge each and every one of the members, regardless of the time they served. The spirit of ANZAC is as relevant to us all today as it was 100 years ago. We will come together on this occasion to remember the ANZAC’s, their achievements and losses and not to glorify war or to praise victory but to appreciate how our history has derived from their self-sacrifice. It is important for our younger generations to be involved in these commemorations so they may be able to appreciate the peace and freedom we relish today came at the ultimate price. Please join your local community at a ceremony this ANZAC Day, Sunday 25th of April to help commemorate the spirit of ANZAC. The Goodna RSL Sub-Branch has planned a number of events for this special day. For full details of times and list of events, please phone Vivienne on 0447 050 110.

Probus Club Update by Pat van der Beek Hi to all readers and welcome to our April column. Can you believe that over a quarter of the year is already history? It certainly doesn’t feel cold enough to be almost winter; hopefully, we will have some lovely crisp mornings soon. Don’t forget your annual flu jab.

The photo above is of our Committee for the 20142015 year. Congratulations to all new office holders. Our speaker for April was the popular local media presenter, author and poet, Rupert McCall OAM. Rupert spoke about his life and work and shared some amusing anecdotes with us. Madonna King will be our guest speaker for May. Madonna is known as the ‘voice of current affairs’ in Queensland and has won several ABC awards for journalism, so we look forward to an interesting and informed presentation. Our outing for March was a ferry trip downriver from Southbank to Hamilton Reach, returning to Southbank for lunch. We all enjoyed a day on the water and found that public transport for the day catered well to our needs. April’s excursion will be to the Normanby winery at Harrisville where we can taste some local wines or just enjoy a tea or coffee with morning tea. Hopefully our host, Mike, will regale us with some local tall tales of the region. Then we will drive a short distance to the Royal Hotel for lunch. Car-pooling is the plan for this outing. Monthly coffee dates for April and May are Friday 17th April, and Friday 15th May at Robelle Domain. Monthly pub lunches for April and May are at Spring Lake Hotel on Wednesday 15th April and Thursday 7th May. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Joe on the number below for details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Your first step is to ring Joe on 0417 288 390 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (corner Langley Road) Camira.

It’s that time of year again where we celebrate our community, boost city pride, support local groups and indulge in a myriad of cultural events with the Ipswich Festival on from April 16 to May 3. The Ipswich Festival brings out the best of our great city with Festival favourites including Fire on the River, Global Fiesta and the Jazz Wine and Blues just some of this year’s highlights. For the first time in Festival history, the Ipswich Festival Parade will be staged at dusk, with the Parade of Lights – Our People, Our Culture on May 2 at 6pm. Following the parade, the fun will continue into the night with the Street Celebration and Concert. Make sure you head into Ipswich early to get a good spot for the parade, because you will also be able to enjoy the Creative Kidz Big Day Out, as well as ArtBeat in d’Arcy Doyle Place. Some of the other exciting Ipswich Festival highlights include: • Fire on the River April 16 – A fireworks spectacular across the city river. Best viewing from Riverlink Shopping Centre. • Global Fiesta on April 18 in Queens Park – A feast of multicultural delights including food, music, dance and crafts to celebrate our multicultural city. • Sounds of the 60s – Forever Diamond on April 24 at the Ipswich Civic Centre – For lovers of the sixties and Neil Diamond this is a must see musical extravaganza. • Jazz Wine & Blues April 25 at Queens Park – Featuring the beautiful jazz sounds of Emma Pask, this is one of the most popular events of the festival. A highlight on our city’s social calendar, you won’t want to miss out on this year’s Ipswich Festival. There are plenty of reasons to celebrate our great city, and events like this are part of why we think Ipswich is south-east Queensland’s most liveable city. For more information and a list of all upcoming events, visit the website at: www.ipswichfestival.com.au.

Robelle Lagoon Opening Lock in Saturday 5th September for a Springfest and opening of the Lagoon at Robelle Domain, Springfield. I am involved in planning the day and will release more details closer to September. Recycling Rubbish Bin (Yellow Lid) I believe most people use the recycle rubbish bin with good intention. The contractors who take the recycled rubbish from Ipswich Waste reject plastic bags full of rubbish even if the content is 100% recyclable. Please ensure you empty the plastic bag into the recycle bin and reuse plastic bags or place in the normal rubbish bin. What can you place in the recycling bin? • Aluminium and steel cans (including aerosols) • Paper – including magazines and advertising material • Cardboard – including milk and juice cartons – No Waxed Cardboard • Glass bottles and jars (please remove lids) • Plastic bottles and containers (please remove lids) Do not place plastic bags, food waste, grass clippings, disposable nappies or clothes in the recycling bin. Welcome Springfield Anglican Church It was my pleasure to attend the official launch of the Anglican Church in Springfield. The church meets at the multi-purpose hall at The Springfield Anglican College on Springfield Greenbank Arterial at 5pm each Sunday. School Leaders It was wonderful to meet with all the school leaders from the Greater Springfield Area. The students are a credit to their families and schools. It was good to hear their ideas and to share with them some thoughts on leadership. Parking Please be aware that it is state law that you cannot park on the footpath regardless of if there is a formalised concrete footpath or not. This is a state law that Council regulatory officers are obligated to enforce. 15/16 Budget Many discussions, meetings, work, sweat, and maybe tears, are currently taking place in building the 15/16 budget. I believe the budget is one of council’s most important decisions as it gives the City of Ipswich discipline and confidence going forward. Councillors and officers work hard to ensure a fair and responsible budget is delivered. Did you know? The names of all continents start and end with the same letter.
National Seniors Springfield Branch Update by Allen O’Toole, acting President.
An Inaugral meeting was held on the 18th March at the Springfield Tavern. The meeting was attended by 35 people and chaired by Marjorie Green, assisted by National Seniors Representative Mark Furness. Guests were local MP Jo-Ann Miller and Janet Pisasale who presented a framed certificate of congratulations on the formation of the branch to acting President Allen O’Toole. Members from Forest Lake and Goodna Branches were also in attendance to show support. Votes were taken to establish the Springfield Branch of National Seniors Australia to form the committee. Nominations were taken and Allen O’Toole was voted in as president; all other positions were also filled from nominations from the floor. The guests were then treated to a lively and interesting talk by Vera Somerwil relating to her experiences with National Seniors. It was great to have the support from locals and neighbouring branches. The meeting closed at 8.30pm with lucky door prizes being drawn. The next meeting will be held on the 15th April at the Springfield Tavern 6.30 – 8.30pm. There will be a $5 cover charge, light refreshments will be served and raffle tickets will be available. The theme for the night will be ‘Meet and Greet’ and will include a speaker on Podiatry. For more information call Allen on 0400 525 803.

a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison
Pedestrian bridge over Centenary Highway The pedestrian bridge was eventually delivered and provides a safe crossing for students and residents between Springfield and Springfield Lakes. I believe the next piece of infrastructure required on the bridge is Safe City Cameras and I look forward to seeing that become a reality.
I remember very clearly in early 2000, students from Woodcrest State College taking a life risk and running across the then two lane Centenary Highway to Springfield Lakes. This was a great concern as vehicles and trucks were travelling at 100 kph even though there was only two lanes and nowhere near the volume of traffic there is now. I met with concerned parents and elected members and officers from the State Government stressing the need for a pedestrian bridge.

CREATIVE heART Creative meet ‘n greet If a social, informal get together focused on small creative projects, local networking and creative interaction would appeal to you, the Creative Corner might be what you’re looking for. The Creative HeART’s member and local felter Visnja Tomkiv has instigated the Creative Corner and it’s taking a shape under her wings. Passionate about the local community, the long term Camira resident is offering additional, regular meetings and get togethers for locals, under the umbrella of the Creative HeART Greater Springfield. “We are offering an additional meet ’n greet opportunity in our local area every third Monday of each month,” said Visnja. “It is a great place to live and I am very passionate about our local area. I hope that the Creative Corner will help people to get to get out, to know each other, form new friendships and networks in low key social gatherings, something that is quite important in any community’s life. “People are encouraged to drop in, make themselves known, share time and stories and their creative passion with each other, an activity that is an integral part of any strong and healthy community.” Visnja Tomkiv is an active member of a number of spinning and weaving groups in South East Corner and is regularly involved in the Ipswich creative community.
