Residents of the Greater Springfield area will be pleased to know their four legged friends can join them in the Greater Springfield Run for Life event this year on Saturday September 7. The 2km Dog Walk, proudly sponsored by Springfield District Veterinary Clinic, will start at 10.30am with organisers expecting over 200 dogs and their walkers to participate. For those going it alone, all the usual runs will be on, including a new 10km run at 7am. Families are encouraged to come along on the day, and enjoy the 50 market stalls and displays, as well as some rides for the kids. Funds raised from the event will go to Westside Community Care (WCC) Program, as well as chaplaincy at local schools, USQ and the WCC Business Chaplaincy program. With corporate challenges once again on for the entertainment of all, champions Springfield Christian Family will defend their title as 5km Run winners. Battle of the Banks, as well as Tug-O-War will also feature, as will the 5km schools challenge for local primary and high schools. Organisers hope to raise over $20 000 for the nominated charities and are looking forward to an even bigger crowd than last year. New EP gives voice to Another Language
For local resident and musician, the road to living the dream he has nurtured since writing his first song at age 13, has been chequered. Josh Morrison fought and beat thyroid cancer at just nineteen, which threatened his hopes of a future singing career but gave him the courage to seize life with both hands and utilise the gift of his voice once it returned after surgery. After Josh spent last year gathering band members and refining their unique sound, Another Language was formed. Now, set to be married this month to band member Roelien, Josh will release the five track EP on August 31, his wedding day. “Our wedding guests will receive the first 100 copies of our EP,” said Josh. “Roelien is a poet and singer/songwriter. I’m blessed to have her warm, gentle voice on the album. She has an incredible vocal range and has become a valuable asset to the live shows. We are all excited about our upcoming single release on August 17 at the Princess Theatre in Woollongabba at 7pm. This also coincides with the release of the video clip for our single Remember to Breathe. “Remember to Breathe has been influenced by Cat Stevens, Mumford & Sons and Boy & Bear. It was written to remind us all to move forward despite fear and insecurities, despite our circumstances.” Josh and Another Language can be heard on soundcloud (soundcloud.com/another-language) and can be contacted via their facebook page (facebook.com/anotherlanguage).

Personally Speaking
By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis We’ve all heard the saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”. It’s a saying I have always liked, being the optimist that I am, as it implies the need to make the best of something and turn something sour in our lives into something sweet. I don’t know how many of you have made lemonade but it’s a family favourite in our house on those 40 something summer days when plain water just doesn’t quench your thirst. If you have made lemonade at home, you’ll know that you need more than just lemons. You also need water and sugar, and maybe a little mint if you have it growing in the garden. Have you ever not got the ratio of water, lemon and sugar quite right? Too much lemon and it’ll make your teeth curl, as my dad used to say. Too much sugar and it’s undrinkable, too much water and all we have is a watery tasteless liquid. I know I have made far too much lemonade on occasion by having to add just a bit more of this and that until, before I know it, I’ve made enough for three jugs instead of one. The saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade” is incomplete, really, isn’t it? You can’t just make lemonade with lemons, you need the other ingredients in the right proportions or else that lemonade is not going to taste pleasant at all. Just like in life, we need the right ratio of other ingredients in order to make lemonade from the lemons life hands us all at various times. Just like with lemonade, sweetness needs to be added, so too in life when a crisis or ‘lemon’ hits our life. We need the sweet things like a surprise visit from a friend, picking flowers from our garden to bring inside, watching a favourite movie with a friend, taking that day trip to a town you’ve always wanted to see. We don’t need much sugar to sweeten the whole batch of lemonade. We need that sweetness to balance the bitter taste of disappointment, loss and pain that life seems to hand out on an alarmingly regular basis. Without sweeteners, life is indeed just a bowl of lemons sitting on the bench. We need to intentionally add the sweetness. And we can’t make lemonade without water, the mainstay of life and a necessity to our very existence. We need mainstays. Whether it be family and friends, faith, job satisfaction, life purpose. We all need the basics in life, just like our physical bodies need water. So when life hands us lemons, we can indeed make lemonade but we also need the water and sugar and enough of each to make the living palatable. Maybe you can provide some of the sugar and water to someone’s life when they are handed lemons. Or maybe you can allow others to do the same for you when your life takes a sour turn. After all, what fun is drinking lemonade all by yourself?

Educating parents about car safety West Moreton Anglican College Est 1994
Ipswich Queensland
WestMAC Open Day Saturday 24 August 2013
Local resident and Butterfly Wings parent program co-ordinator, Luise Manning, recently organised a presentation by RACQ Education Officer Karina Halliday on the dangers surrounding children in cars. Prompted by the high number of requests from parents on correctly fitting car restraints, the RACQ Kids & Cars safety program is being trialled to highlight to parents the issues of child safety in and around cars, with a focus on young children. With many car restraints not being fitted correctly and parents unaware of new changes to the laws pertaining to car restraints for children under seven years old, the program seeks to educate and increase the safety of children in vehicles. The power point presentation highlighted hazardous environments such as driveways and car parks and how to make these places safer for young children by teaching them about driveway safety, car reversing lights and designated safe areas. Ten parents with children ranging in age from five weeks to three years old, attended the one hour presentation at the YMCA Community Centre, together with Ipswich City Council Safety Development Officer, Keely Bell and YMCA Centre Manager Kristen Grainger. The program is available free to all interested community groups and can be accessed by contacting Education Officer Karina Halliday on 3872 8924 or send an email to karina.halliday@racq.com.au. To find out more information about the Butterfly Wings parent program, contact the YMCA on 3288 2292.

Making a local Creative Hub a reality
With recent vacation of the sales and information centre in Springfield Lakes, local resident Jolanta Szymczyk is keen to see the building put to a worthwhile use and establish a Creative Hub in the local area. Textile artist Jolanta Szymczyk, together with Lena Tisdall and Julie Maddocks from Brisbane Visual Arts Community (BVAC) are joining forces with the powerhouses behind ‘ICON Creative’ Tina and David Vaka to run a joint event at the end of the year to celebrate the importance of creativity in communities. “We are exploring ways to increase our joint presence in the local community and bring a number of creative workshops from both BVAC and ICON Creative in the lead up to the New Year Eve event 2013,” said Jolanta. “The vision for the Creative Hub is to bring the community together in a single location,” she Photo courtesy of Nicholas Goodridge said. “The ex-sales building by the lake is a perfect place for a gallery, an art shop, a coffee and meeting place as well as the place for any creative wanting to share and maximise business and creative opportunities.” The Hub would be an ideal learning space which would include an e-library focusing on creative publications, as well as being an excellent location for a Self Organised Learning Environment. “We are all encouraged by the creative potential and energy that already exists in this community. We are not starting from ground level at this stage, we are building on a foundation and potential that is already in place. All it needs now is more local support and a will to bring it all together in one creatively inspiring place.” Jolanta is no stranger to the benefits of creative expression. For the last 13 years, Jolanta has exhibited regularly in Australia and overseas as well as teaching her workshops that focus on creating wearable art. This year, three of Jolanta’s pieces will be on display at the Ekka as part of the ‘Garment to Garden’ theme at the Horticultural Pavilion, Garden Platform. Jolanta’s wearable art is created from Merino wool and hand printed silks using local plants and depicts contemporary approaches to urban landscape and modern garden. To join Jolanta and members of BVAC in their bid to see the Creative Hub become a reality , contact Jolanta by sending an email Photo courtesy of Nicholas Goodridge to studio88@optusnet.com.au.

College News with Steve Croft, Head of College The Springfield Anglican College
The wellbeing of students at The Springfield Anglican College is top of the College’s priority list. As part of the College’s annual review of programmes in place, this term we are looking at the College Pastoral Care Programme. That is, the collective range of programmes and opportunities that support our students personal growth and development. As a College we are very keen to ensure all our students are afforded a safe, caring, positive and supportive learning environment. In our view such an environment is crucial in underpinning both student academic progress and personal growth and development. As a College we adopt a holistic approach to education, where a great deal of time and emphasis is devoted to assisting our students develop their Emotional Intelligence and Resilience. The College has a policy of no tolerance to bullying of any kind, and responds to issues that may arise in a speedy and firm manner. The College has high expectations of
Page 8 - August 2013 - The Greater Springfield Times
students and will become involved in Cyber Bullying issues should they arise, even if these may occur ‘off campus’. The Bucket Filler programme on the Primary Campus and the Rite Journey are two excellent programmes currently in place. The Bucket Fillers programme focuses very clearly on the prevention of bullying in a proactive manner, with the Rite Journey assisting students with understanding their likes and dislikes, tolerance of differences and their ability to work in team situations. The College also believes it is very important to take a proactive stance on a range of other potential issues, as well as, provide avenues for students to gain a range of skills that could be valuable beyond school. Across the campuses, there are in existence a range of different programmes focusing on topical issues such as substance abuse, cyber safety through to First Aid Courses, Driver Training and The Responsible Service of Alcohol. The aim of this review, which includes research of alternative programmes and initiatives, seeks to evaluate the sequencing and benefits to students of the collective programmes and opportunities currently in place at the College. Veterinary News By Dr Milan Savkovic BVSc GradDipVSc
Cystitis in cats
A common reason for cat owners to contact a vet is when they have seen blood in the cat’s litter tray or have seen their cat going to the tray more frequently than normal or straining to go to the toilet. A common cause of these signs is the syndrome known as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), sometimes referred to as cystitis. FLUTD or cystitis can have numerous causes. Viral or bacterial infections are sometimes involved but not nearly as frequently as in dogs and people. Formation of crystals in the urine often plays a role and certain diets are more likely to contribute to this. Stress plays a role in some cats. Sometimes the cause is unknown and this is referred to as idiopathic cystitis. Cystitis is a distressing, painful condition. Even when the bladder is empty, the cat will feel the need to urinate and will strain, producing only small drops or no urine at all. The inflammation leads to spasm of the muscles of the bladder and urethra, making the problem worse. In male cats, the urethra can be obstructed by a plug of crystals and mucus so the cat cannot pass urine. This is a life-threatening emergency, which requires immediate veterinary attention. The treatment for cystitis depends on the cause, and it is necessary to examine a urine sample to determine the cause. It can be difficult to get urine samples from cats sometimes and your vet may recommend hospitalisation for a short period to achieve this. Male cats with obstructions need to be anaesthetized to have the obstruction relieved, and a urinary catheter may be left in place for a short time. Medications to relieve spasm, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics may also be used. If the cystitis is related to crystal formation, special diets will help to control it. In cases of idiopathic cystitis, drugs that protect the bladder lining may be used. Long term management is needed in many cats that suffer from cystitis. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict which cats will be affected. Cats that are overweight seem to be predisposed; also cats that only eat supermarket brand biscuits often develop urinary problems. As a general rule, always ensure your cat has easy access to drinking water, try to feed the premium brand cat foods available at vet clinics, and if you see any signs indicating cystitis, consult your veterinarian promptly. As I write this month’s column, the world has just welcomed a new little prince. He was born on 23rd July to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Whatever our thoughts on the monarchy and its future, I’m sure all Australians wish the new parents and their little boy good health and a long and happy future. The picture above was taken at Government House which we visited on a sunny day in June. Thanks to members Vic and Gwen who are volunteer guides at Government House and who gave us a very informative guided tour. Government House is a wonderful piece of our history and visiting is certainly an enriching experience for all Queenslanders. July’s outing was to Boonah Bowls Club where we enjoyed a ‘Christmas in July’ function after a pleasant country drive. Our main outing for August will be to the new Tennis Centre at Tennyson where we will enjoy morning tea and participate in a one hour tour of the Centre followed by lunch at the Yeronga RSL. Another date for lunch is at the Spring Lakes Hotel on Monday 12th August, all welcome. Also in August, some of us will join with Jindalee Probus for a tour of the new ABC studios at Southbank. Some members were unable to go on our own tour of the premises earlier this year so Jindalee Club has kindly invited us to join theirs. Also remember our Friday coffee mornings at the café at Robelle Domain in Springfield Parklands. Our speaker for August was Club Secretary Vic Wise on ‘The Cold War and My Part in It’. The talk was well received and members were reminded that they are always welcome to share their life stories at Club meetings. Our September speaker will be Henny Allen who will share information on ‘Young People and Court Proceedings’. We would like to issue a cordial invitation to all retired and semi-retired local people to consider joining us. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Interested? Your first step is to ring Gaye on 3818 8765 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Feminism and the women’s liberation movement have achieved great changes for women in western countries. So why is it that many women still struggle with achieving the balanced life promised by our grandmothers? In fact, women in greater numbers are now seeking help to find their true path, to define their personal idea of what it means to be successful, and to find practical ways to balance the roles in their lives. And most of all, to gain acceptance by other women who make different choices. How do we cope with having so many choices available to us, and still wanting it all? An essential step is for women to find out who they are, and avoid the trap of defining themselves according to their roles - wife, mother, daughter, sister. Men tend to have a much clearer sense of identity, they know what they can and cannot do. Women who invest time in identifying their strengths, personality styles and preferences, life goals and ambitions, and burnout traps are better armed when it comes time to making big decisions such as whether or not to have children, timing for career changes, and the types of relationships they want.
Another set of skills found in successful women involves mindset. Mindset is underpinned by self-esteem, so women who can genuinely recognise and celebrate their successes, and develop an optimistic and positive mental focus, do better than those who worry about mistakes, image and failure. Positive mindset is helped by daily journaling about “what went well” each day, and reviewing how you contributed to this. Being open to learning strategies that work by watching other successful women, engaging in coaching with a mentor, reading and going to personal growth workshops are great ways to build a positive and outcomes-focused mindset. Avoiding burnout traps and short-circuiting self-sabotage habits are also essential for getting ahead and finding balance. Burnout is the result of taking on more than is humanly possible and convincing yourself that you “should” be able to accomplish the impossible. A weekly schedule based on a real assessment of how many waking hours you have each week is a start. Block off hours that have to be spent in survival tasks (getting food and eating, bathing and personal hygiene, travelling from one place to another). With the leftover hours, allocate specific blocks of time according to your personal priorities - physical and mental fitness activities, relationships, earning money, creative activities, and so on. Finally, write a letter to yourself (now) as an 80-year-old woman. What wisdom would you share, and what practical advice would you give yourself?

Last month, the first fully loaded train tested out the Richlands to Springfield Central Line. Springfield based Councillor, David Morrison, said this was an exciting milestone in the delivery of a passenger service to Springfield Central by the end of 2013. Cr David Morrison said that many people are still appreciating the fact that two stations are being constructed; Springfield Station on Nev Smith Drive which will service Camira, Springfield and Springfield Lakes, and Springfield Central Station opposite Orion Town Centre. “I believe this generation will not see another station like Springfield Central Station. The design, construction, delivery and aesthetic appeal of Springfield Central is a credit to all involved and will stand tall as a community landmark in the Greater Springfield Area for many years,” said Cr Morrison.

The new local Rotary Club of Greater Springfield (Prov) recently conducted one of its weekly meeting and partners evenings at Jimmy Sirisomphone’s Thai Emperor at Brookwater. The eighteen members and guests enjoyed Jimmy’s friendly hospitality including excellent food and great service thus supporting Thai Emperor’s reputation as the best Thai restaurant in the district. This Rotary club conducts meetings at local Springfield venues not just to support local business but also to spread the fellowship which is Rotary and promote the reason for becoming a Rotarian. This reason being the chance to do something for somebody else and to experience the selffulfilment that comes from the process. It is a richly rewarding activity. Though the club meets weekly at the Central Tavern Springfield, Education City, USQ, this club is flexible and likes to mix it up with monthly meetings at the Brookwater Golf Club where after the meeting, two teams are entered into the trivia evening. Club President Keith Reinke said the club is certainly keeping very busy with support for activities and programmes such as training workshops, A Little Ray of Giving initiative, Shelterbox Disaster Relief and Mens Shed. More potential projects are being planned. As such the club needs to attract more enthusiastic members to engage in these and other initiatives. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield (Prov) holds its meetings every Wednesday evening at 6.30pm at Central Tavern Springfield, Education City, USQ. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Eva Lewis on 0408 528 085, visit them on Facebook or send an email to greaterspringfieldrotary@hotmail.com.

RSPCA urgently needs foster carers RSPCA Qld is in desperate need of new foster carers in the local area. Foster carers provide a loving temporary environment for animals that may not be ready to go to new permanent homes for a variety of reasons. “We particularly need specialist foster carers who have 6ft fences and can take large breed dogs. Carers with no dogs of their own and no small children are particularly sought after,” said RSPCA Qld’s Foster Care Coordinator Julie Herbert. “This scenario often suits active retirees who still travel from time to time and can’t look after a dog all year round.” While in foster care, the RSPCA provides food and any necessary veterinary treatment plus trained staff are on hand to assist the foster carer with managing any behavioural issues. Fostering is a win-win situation for the RSPCA, the carer and the animal. It eases pressure on the shelter, it spares the animal the stresses of the shelter during the transition period and carers receive the benefits of pet ownership with food, grooming and veterinary care provided. “But it’s not just carers for dogs that we need,” continued Ms Herbert. “We also need carers who can take cat-flu adult cats. These carers either have to have no cats of their own or have cats that are also cat flu positive.” The cat-flu cats who go into foster are recovering from the illness and are not critical patients. They may show signs of sneezing and have some discharge from their
eyes or nose. They may also require daily medication. The most difficult animals to place in foster are ringworm cases. Ringworm is a relatively straightforward condition to treat but without enough foster carers willing to take them, many of these canines and felines sit in the shelter, vulnerable to many other diseases. With adequate hygiene measures, a ringworm animal poses limited risk to healthy teenagers, adult people and adult animals in the home. Full training will be provided. If you are interested in becoming an RSPCA Qld Foster Carer please email fostering@rspcaqld.org.au or call 3426 9997.

Community grants support local groups
Springfield Christian Family are set to share in $6000 in funding from Ipswich City Council’s latest round of Community Development Grants. Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said these grants support community groups to undertake activities that contribute to a vibrant Ipswich. “It’s great that there are so many creative and dynamic groups in the area who are committed to developing programs and running activities that engage and inspire residents,” Cr Charlie Pisasale said. “Ipswich City Council is proud to support these activities which are so valued in local communities.” Springfield Christian Family will receive $2,000 to support the 7th Annual Battle of the Bands, with ArtsConnect Ipswich and Glebe Garden Club each also receiving $2,000. “These are three great investments by council in our community that provide real support for local groups and bring benefit to residents,” Councillor Pisasale said. “These groups are driven by passion in their chosen fields and receive most of their support from community volunteers. “I’m proud that council is able to play a role in funding them to promote their activities and stage such innovative events. I wish everyone involved the best for their upcoming work and congratulate them on receiving these grants,” Cr Pisasale said.

EVERY YOUNG PERSON DESERVES A YOUNG LIFE Aged care is no place for any young person. Yet right now, more than 7,500 young Australians with high care needs are living in aged care. 700,000 more are being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support. Why? If you, or a loved one, were to suffer an accident or illness that left you, or them, in need of full-time care, there are currently few alternatives for care and housing available. Youngcare works to change this by building more age appropriate housing; financially assisting through At Home Care Grants; and providing information and advice through the Youngcare Connect hotline.
