Hi all and welcome to the monthly column of the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. A number of our members are unwell as this is written and we wish them all a speedy return to good health. Our August speaker was Patrick Pickett CSM, Director/Conductor of the Queensland Pops Orchestra. Aside from his musical career, Patrick served in the Australian Defence Force for 37 years and reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Among his many other achievements, Patrick was the CEO of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra from 2009 to 2012. His interesting talk ranged from his experiences in the army to his current involvement with the innovative arts company ‘AMOS’ (Australian Musicians and Orchestral Services) which he launched in 2013. September’s speaker will be Claude Tranchant, author of Boots to Bliss, who, at the age of 64, walked ‘The Way’ from the Burgundy region of France to Muxia in north-western Spain. Claude covered a distance of 2500 kilometres over one hundred days and her fascinating book records her experiences. The picture above shows some of us after our Christmas in July lunch at the Boonah Bowls Club. The lunch, the company and the country drive were all most enjoyable and our thanks go to Gwen and Julianne for arranging the quizzes and prizes. Our August activity will be a BYO breakfast barbecue at Robelle Domain (usual spot). All are welcome, BYO everything except barbecue. Hot water for drinks will not be needed as power points are provided for electric jugs and toasters making for a very civilised picnic breakfast. This month’s pub lunch will be at Springfield Tavern (opposite Coles) on Friday 15/08. There will be a discussion at our next meeting to decide whether this venue is preferable to the one we have been patronising or whether we should alternate month by month. Our regular coffee morning at Robelle Domain will be on Friday 22/08. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Vic on the number below for details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Your first step is to ring Vic on 3271 1096 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis

Susannah Friis I ’ve spent aBygood amount of my life feeling like I didn’t ‘fit in’. I was never popular, never cool, not particularly sporty, and definitely not smart enough to hang with the ‘nerds’. There just was not a group where I could look around and say to myself, ‘yes, these are my people!’. The result is that once I hit about 30, I realised I didn’t care and that the sound of my own drum resonated with me, even if it didn’t for anyone else. And that was liberating. Since coming back from Thailand a year and a half ago, that feeling has slowly but steadily been creeping back but with a different slant. I look around at all I have, at all we have, in the Western world and wonder why I’m here. Why do I get to have running water, electricity, the right to vote, the ability to receive an education and find gainful employment? Why me? Contentment is the art of being at peace no matter our circumstances. And we generally take that to mean being content when we have less than we want or when we are going through difficulties. Sometimes, it’s hard to be content when things are going well and we have no problems, especially when we read or watch the news, or when friends and family are doing it tough. It’s hard to be content with all the plenty we have, in the face of so many who have so little. I find it’s a constant challenge, not to be grateful, but to be okay with all we have. While at the beach on our recent holiday, I came across a weed growing out of the rocks. It was flowering with pretty daisy-like yellow flowers. The yellow was such an unexpected bright spot against the rocks and the words ‘grow where you’re planted’ popped into my mind. It’s tempting to think we have been planted in the wrong spot. It’s tempting to uproot ourselves and go where we think we will be best suited. We’re not content with just growing where we are. We’re always on the lookout for a climate that we think will encourage more growth, where our true potential will be maximised. It’s tempting to think my life would be better spent being in Thailand working with the rescued girls. It’s tempting to think I am wasting it, here in the land of plenty. And sometimes we’re right. Sometimes we need to pick up and move halfway across the world to make a difference. And sometimes, it’s not. By speaking and writing about what is happening to these girls, I could be making more of an impact than if I were there physically. It’s important to remember that we are where we are for a reason. We may never really understand that reason but until we fully embrace our surroundings, we won’t grow or bloom. Maybe you are where you are simply to provide that bright spot among the blacks and browns in someone else’s landscape.

Cancer Council Queensland’s Springfield Relay For Life is gearing up to be an exciting inaugural event – with a new location and a new date now secured! Springfield Relay For Life will be held on October 11-12, at Bob Gibbs Park, Springfield Parkway. Relay For Life is an 18-hour event involving teams of up to 15 people keeping a baton moving in a relay-style walk or run overnight, all in an effort to raise vital funds and awareness for a cancer free future. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said it’s time to gather your friends, family, and colleagues and register a team or volunteer to help make a vital difference to all Queenslanders impacted by cancer. “You don’t need to be a to be a doctor or a scientist to make a difference in the fight against cancer – all you need is a big heart, a pair of walking shoes, and a bit of spare time,” Ms Clift said. “Getting involved in Relay for Life might only seem like a small way to make an impact but your contribution makes such a lasting difference to locals touched by cancer. “With $4.48 million raised at Relay For Life events throughout Queensland last year, and funds invested into vital cancer research and support, it goes to show the fundamental difference this event continues to have.” Locals can register by visiting www.relayforlife.org. au, or phoning Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline on 1300 65 65 85. Entry for Springfield Relay For Life is just $15 for under 18’s and $20 for adults, which includes a polo shirt and breakfast at the event. Teams are supported in their fundraising efforts in the lead up to the event. “Join with us as we celebrate with our cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, fight back against cancer – and most importantly, grow hope,” Ms Clift said. Cancer Council Queensland is an independent, community-based charity. The achievements of which are made possible by the generosity of Queenslanders. For more information about Cancer Council Queensland, please visit www.cancerqld.org.au or call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20.

As a result of a ‘show and tell’ session a few weeks ago, a few members joined the Botanique Art Exhibition at Mt Coot-tha Garden in July, coordinated and managed by passionate botanist, Bettina Palmer. The preparation to the event opened yet another door of opportunity to Richard McLaren of The Creative HeART. As a devoted photographer and Springfield resident, he is very excited to create a book capturing Brisbane iconic garden’s diverse plants collection. The Botanical Gardens’ Hidden Treasures Book is shaping up as a year-long project that will capture all seasons, plants and garden changes, including the cycle of growth, flowering and fruiting seasons. If you are creative or are part of an existing group involved in creative industries as part of your business or personal interest or a hobby and would like to be part of the group’s adventures and opportunities to be involved or showcasing your artwork, let us know about yourself and become involved in the life and activities of The Creative HeART. Local yarners give the gift of warmth Families in need were warmer this winter thanks to more than 60 hand-knitted blankets made by the Springfield Yarners. A record 62 blankets were delivered to the Salvation Army for their Blanket Appeal after months of knitting and sewing up by the Springfield knitting group and members of the community. Club coordinator and University of Southern Queensland (USQ) education lecturer, Dr Nicole Ann Todd said the group, now in its eight year of knitting, had handed over nearly 400 knitted and crocheted blankets through the years. “This year we decided to have the Salvation Army donate the blankets to women in shelters,” Dr Todd said. “The blankets go with the women as they move on, so more are always needed.” Dr Todd said the blankets have been given out to women’s shelters as well as refugees, aged care and Indigenous ministries. Community members can still get involved, the group accepts knitted strips and completed blankets all year round. Just drop them into the USQ Springfield campus main building reception or library. “A small group of knitters have been coming monthly to knit for an hour on campus, however, the majority of blankets are made up of strips sent in from ladies in the community,” Dr Todd said. “I get a real lift from the thought that there are people out there who are willing to offer countless hours of their own time to do something for someone they have never met.” The Springfield Yarners meet the first Monday of every month at 1pm at the 6th floor staffroom at USQ Springfield. Knitters are very welcome to join for a knit and a chat. Instructions: Using 8ply acrylic yarn and 4mm needles, cast on 45 stitches. Knit every row (garter stitch) until the strip measures 1.5m in length. Any colour is fine. Strips can be one colour or multiple colours. Six strips are used to make one blanket. Dr Todd is happy to receive any number of strips which can be sewn together to make completed blankets. Crocheted blankets are also welcome. Please knit in strips rather than squares as the sewing up is quite time consuming. Donations of 8ply acylic yarn are also gratefully received. For more information email Dr Nicole Ann Todd: nicoleann.todd@usq.edu.au

Child safety book launched in Springfield

Pictured with Luise Manning (centre) at the recent book launch is State Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk (left) and Elizabeth Mitchell (right). Springfield Lakes mum and new author, Luise Manning hosted a breakfast book launch last month where over 60 invited guests including Mayor Paul Pisasale, State Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk, and Cr Sheila Ireland gathered with representatives from police, teachers and business and community leaders. Hold My Hand highlights the importance of the safety of young children in and around the home especially in relation to driveway run over incidents and the effect this has on families/communities. The new children’s book aims to raise awareness of low speed vehicle run overs (LSVRO’s) to prevent and minimise the risk of young children becoming injured or killed in a garage, driveway or car park. The book tells the story of a young child waving goodbye to her dad from the safety spot inside the house and how the child travels to ballet and uses safe practices such as wearing of seatbelts, use of the safety door to enter and exit a car and demonstrate safe behaviour in and around the car and car parks. The Hold My Hand project was chosen by Soroptimists International from 156 applicants to receive a $5 000 grant sponsored by NRMA Insurance. School libraries in the Greater Springfield area will receive a copy of Hold My Hand and all preschool students will receive an information brochure and safety door sticker. A safety forum, organised by Soroptimists International Springfield will be hosting a community Kids & Cars Safety forum on Wednesday 10 September at Woodcrest State College and members of the public and interested parties are welcome to attend or contact Shelley from Soroptimist International Springfield on 0419 546 013.

One of the most important parts of your pet’s preventative health care is desexing. Research has shown that after a dog has been desexed, there is a 90% reduction in roaming behaviour, 80% reduction in male to male dog aggression, 50% reduction in marking the territory with urine, 66% reduction in sexual mounting of people and that it can reduce dominance aggression behaviour towards people and animals. An undesexed female dog can disturb a neighbourhood of undesexed male dogs simply by the pheromone that is secreted in her urine when in season and she doesn’t even have to have direct contact with them. Desexed dogs tend to be more sociably acceptable as they don’t roam the neighbourhood, don’t mark areas with concentrated urine, don’t show aggression towards other dogs and don’t whine and bark when there is a female in season in the area. It is equally important to desex your cat. As they reach maturity at about five to six months of age, cats start roaming to find themselves a mate, they wail and howl to each other, which can be extremely disturbing. As they roam, cats are prone to car accidents, cat fights, dog attacks, becoming lost or can be trapped and surrendered to animal welfare organisations. A single cat bite can transmit viruses (such as Feline AIDS) that can affect your cat for the rest of their life and shorten their life span. Cat bites can introduce bacteria under the skin which could form an abscess and require veterinary attention. From a medical point of view, by having your pet desexed early on in life, the incidence of reproductive tract diseases and cancers can be reduced. The ideal time is five to six months of age but pets can be desexed earlier and also much later in life. Undesexed cats make home in bushland and rapidly breed to form large populations of stray and feral cats which severely threaten our unique birds and wildlife. Welfare Organisations are inundated with litters of dogs and cats which often have to be destroyed as they cannot rehome every single animal they receive. Surgical desexing is a permanent, one off cost in your pet’s life. There are no adverse side-effects from having your pet desexed and no evidence to support that a pet having a litter or being in heat has any beneficial effect. Based on the social, behavioural, medical and environmental benefits of desexing, there is no justification for not having the procedure done, unless you are a registered breeder. To assist animal welfare issues, desexing fees are heavily reduced by vets to make it affordable for everyone.

ROTARY CLUB of Greater Springfield

Annastacia

Palaszczuk MP

UPDATE BY

Chris Steinback

In Rotary, we mark August as our Membership and Extension Month. The job of growing our membership is one that we can never begin too soon. It is also a job that we can never stop working on. In order to keep serving, the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield always needs to be growing! And growing we are! The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield has commenced membership month in a big way with the visit of our district governor and the induction of a new member Ed Botor. Each year the district governor visits every Rotary club in the district to draw attention to important Rotary issues providing special attention to club organisation, guidance and motivation. On this occasion, District Governor Phillip Charles personally recognised the club’s past achievements and outstanding contributions to the local and international community even though the club has only been chartered for three months. Some of these achievements have been financial support for a local family with a child with a health disorder, support for health research, earthquake victims in the Philippines, the local Adopt a Road program, local kids in care and drought disaster relief. People come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but they stay because Rotary is fun to be a part of. Ed saw an article in the local newspaper about the activities of the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield and thought that he too could make a difference and have some fun at the same time. So Ed attended the next meeting and followed up on the weekend by attending the Rotary Club’s Adopt a Road activity on Augusta Parkway Springfield. Ed was inducted into the Rotary Club by President Keith Reinke in the presence of the District Governor. This year the Rotary theme is Light Up Rotary. Rotary is based on the idea that our service is more effective when we serve together with our friends. So let’s enjoy our Rotary service, share it with others, and Light Up Rotary together! Since 2007, Cr David Morrison has challenged the city of Ipswich to give in the month of September to help a humanitarian need. This year Ipswich Cares Inc will be helping Compassion Australia fund water filtration units and also help fund a group of Ipswich residents to build a medical Centre in Mozambique. Cr David Morrison said that it would be great if every Ipswich school, business and church could do something in the month of September towards Ipswich Cares. So far Ipswich Cares Inc has helped Compassion Australia with projects in the Philippines, Ethiopia, Northern India, Bangladesh, Rwanda, Thailand, Nepal and Mozambique. A dinner will be held on Wednesday 27 August at Spring Lake Function Centre with guest artists Barry Southgate with Jonathon and Jodie Geange with Paul ‘Campo’ Champion being the MC for the night. A 50km walk across Ipswich will be held on Monday 1 September leaving Rosewood at 5am and arriving Orion Springfield Central by 5pm. If you would like to walk all 50km or part thereof or have your business do something in the month of September or attend the dinner please contact 3818 3100 or div1office@ipswich.qld.gov.au.

At the recent Softball Queensland awards night, local softball team, Raiders Softball Club, was awarded Softball Club of the Year, beating 24 Clubs from Softball Associations around Queensland. Raiders Softball Club participates in the Ipswich Softball Association and play their games during the summer season, running from September to March, with a break for school holidays in December. Their playing fields are located at Chubb Street, One Mile, with teams training locally at recreational playing fields at Moreton Avenue, Redbank Plains. The Award category was introduced by Softball Qld in 2012 and it is the first time that Raiders Softball Club has taken out the award. The trophy sits nicely next to the ones for Ipswich Softball Association Club of the Year for 2012 and 2013. The Softball Queensland Award recognised the efforts of the Raiders Softball Club to promote softball in the local community and to provide the resources they needed to play the game. Last season, the club had 84 junior members and 54 senior members across teams for T-Ball, Rookie Ball, boys, girls, men and women divisions. The club had 12 teams in total. For each team, Raiders Softball Club provided a full kit bag with bats, balls, catching gear and training tools. They also provided the support staff with fully qualified coaches, scorers and umpires. Raiders Softball Club prides itself on its family orientated outlook with lots of parents watching their kids play in the morning only to pull on the knickerbockers to play in the afternoon. Sandie Bassett, President of the Club for the past eight years congratulated her committee on their efforts throughout the year. Raiders Softball Club are now preparing for another bumper season which is due to start on 6 September. If you are interested in joining the Queensland Softball Club of the Year, please send an email to the Raider Softball Club at raidersips@hotmail.com or call Brett on 0412 233 813.

COUNSELLING CORNER WITH

Mindfulness Meditation

Counselling Australia

Treat the Cause not the Symptom

Springfield Superclinic 29-31 Commercial Drive, Springfield

Kathy is a member of the

I want to chat about Mindfulness meditation exercises as a way to manage stress, aid relaxation and generally improve your sense of wellbeing. Life can be very stressful for most of us. Every day is a rush: getting up, getting washed and making breakfast, getting the kids off to school or day care then heading off to work and dealing with the stress there. Then we do the return trip. Leave work, collect the kids from school/day care, do some shopping, arrive home, get kids settled then start dinner, bath the kids, put them to bed and finally collapse in front of the TV. So how do we get some time for ourselves? Mindfulness can be a practice that could greatly benefit you - all it needs is fifteen to twenty minutes a day which could literally transform your life. Mindfulness has been show to improve our lives in many ways: • Mindfulness meditation lowers stress - literally. Research shows that mindfulness is not only associated with feeling less stressed, it’s also linked with decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol; • It has been shown to reduce depression; • It has assisted elderly people feel less lonely; • It has assisted individuals with weight loss; • It has been shown to make individuals more compassionate and therefore more tolerant of others – in other words, less arguments; • It lets us get to know our true selves when we need to really objectively analyse ourselves, it can help us conquer our common ‘blind spots’, which affect our personal thoughts about ourselves and others; • It can actually result in brain changes that may be protective against mental illness, by increasing signalling connections in the brain; • It makes music sound better by improving our focused engagement in music, helping us to truly enjoy and experience what we’re listening to. Once you have started Mindfulness meditation as a regular habit, it helps even when you are not actively practicing it. You don’t have to be actually meditating for it to still benefit your brain’s emotional processing. I have saved the best for last! It can even help you sleep better at night. Practice it just 15 minutes a day and you will feel more relaxed both mentally and physically and help you better control your stress, emotions and moods. So given that Mindfulness meditation can assist you all in so many ways, why not contact me and find out more about Mindfulness exercises and how it can assist you in your life.

At our meeting on July 2nd, we had Les Christensen from Seeing Eye Dogs, who brought along his Golden Retriever Rufus. He was such a beautiful dog who just sat there all morning listening to Les explaining about the training involved with these lovely dogs. It was a very interesting morning. July the 9th was our card and board games morning followed by morning tea, and just a few days later on the 12th was Christmas in July at our club house. Once again, it was a huge success. Con the caterer cooked our lovely meal and Bill Henderson entertained and there was plenty of dancing - particularly Bob Keogh who entertained us on the dance floor. July 16th was Show and Tell and Suzzanne Jesson, Diana Reddick, Elsie Dodd, and Bob Keogh put on a very interesting talk resulting in a most enjoyable morning. Hoy was played on July 23 where a good morning enjoyed and lovely prizes won. It has been a wonderful month at the club with wonderful people. Let’s hope next month is the same, as we have a trip going to Rockhamton and Frazer Island for eight days. For any enquiries about the club, contact Val on 3288 2689.

Swim Centre for Orion Springfield Central

Council has given approval for a new Swim Centre at Orion Springfield Central. The McMahon Swim Factory pool will be located adjacent to Southern Cross Circuit and within walking distance of Springfield Central Station. The pool is in the perfect location for those using public transport and will be popular with local residents and nearby university students. This exciting new facility will house a 20 metre heated pool and will offer learn to swim classes, aquatic exercises, stroke improvement classes, swim training and aquatic recreation. The pool will be located inside a 600 square metre building and will include toilets, showers and baby change room and will operate seven days a week. Construction is expected to start in September this year and is due to open in the first half of 2015.

Goodna intersection upgrade

One of Ipswich’s most notorious intersections at Alice and Church Streets, Goodna, is on track for significant safety improvements with the approval of new traffic signals, after a steady increase in traffic volumes. The changes will improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and students at nearby St Francis Xavier School. Drivers currently exiting Church Street to cross or enter Alice Street have to negotiate stop signs. The intersection is one of the last in the area in need of a traffic signal solution to help prevent accidents or serious injury. Design work is currently underway for the site, with work expected to commence in the first half of 2015. Once completed, the project will allow safer journeys for everyone and is expected to cost just over $1.2 million.

Future shopping precinct Augustine Heights

The corner of Augusta Parkway and Leon Capra Drive, Augustine Heights, is planned for redevelopment into a local shopping precinct following interest in the site. The developer is planning to include a bakery, bottle shop, fresh food market, butcher, café and possible restaurant. A message from the Mayor’s Desk BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE

One of the things that makes the City of Ipswich so unique is our colourful rail history. Ipswich is the birthplace of Queensland Rail and for decades; the site of the Workshops Rail Museum was the centre of rail construction, maintenance and technology for Queensland’s fast-developing rail industry, In its time, more than 200 steam locomotives were constructed at the site and during its peak in WWII, more than 3000 people worked there, making it Queensland’s largest employer at that time. On August 17 the Workshops Rail Museum will be hosting the Ipswich Open Day, with free entry to the museum for past and present Queensland Rail employees and Ipswich residents. If you haven’t visited before, come along to the free open day with proof of residency and see the huge model railway of Queensland. There will be self-guided walking tours and you can get up close to genuine locomotive and vintage carriages. The whole family will love it, with the Nippers Railway indoor playground, the chance to drive a train on a simulator, live entertainment, craft sessions and more. Visit www.theworkshops.qm.gld.gov.au and discover some of Queensland’s fascinating history in your own backyard.

Free seniors program on offer at YMCA Ipswich City Council in partnership with Able Australia invite you to register for the Ageing Stronger, Active Longer program that will be held at the Springfield Lakes YMCA Community Centre during August and September. Beginning on Thursday 21 August and running every Thursday until 18 September from 9.00am - noon, this program will provide the opportunity for seniors to learn about and experience a variety of physical activities and how to adopt a nutritious diet. The free program will include low impact fitness sessions, and interactive and motivating educational sessions as well as morning tea. Ipswich residents aged 60 years or over and Indigenous residents aged 50 or over are eligible to apply. For more information or a registration form contact Karri Browne, Seniors & Disabilities Community Development Officer on 3810 6646 or send an email to kbrowne@ipswich.qld.gov.au.

Then&Now

a look back at Greater Springfield with Cr David Morrison

Spring Lake Metro Springfield Councillor David Morrison remembers very clearly a hill being removed to make way for Springfield Metro. In 2005, hundreds of cubic meters of dirt was removed before construction on the complex could begin. Cr David Morrison describes the Greater Springfield Area as one large sand pit as most of the soil that has been removed has been re-used somewhere within the project.

Spring Lake Metro is now buzzing with anchors like McDonalds, Spring Lake Hotel, Spring Lake Function Centre, Choice, Springfield Lakes Hotel, Night Owl, a number of quality restaurants and coffee shops, real estates, vet, video shop, medical centres, medical support services and other. Council has recently approved a new child care centre for Spring Lake Metro and a few other exciting announcements will be made in the near future.
