On August 14 and 15 the College production of the musical Oliver was held at the Logan Entertainment Centre.

There was great excitement and anticipation across the College community as the performances grew near. Both performances were open to the public providing a great opportunity for members of the public to see first hand a talented cast in action.

The production of a musical of this ilk is a significant undertaking, with a large number of students and many staff investing a great number of hours over the past six months in rehearsals, musical accompaniment and set and costume design.

Productions such as this also provide students with a range of valuable learning opportunities, perhaps more so than any other school activity. Performances bring to the fore the importance of teamwork and commitment and support the development of emotional intelligence and resilience, all of which are such valuable traits for students to have as they journey through their schooling and years beyond.

The Creative Arts Department, which incorporates Music, Instrumental Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Art, is

also extremely active throughout the year, incorporating both an academic curriculum emphasis and an extensive extracurricular element. The Creative Arts programme provides a wonderful array of opportunities for students from Prep to Year Twelve to pursue their interests and in a number of cases their career paths.

There is significant research to support the correlation of the learning of an instrument, in particular, with enhanced academic outcomes. The dedication and organisational skills required to learn an instrument well are significant and, more often than not, transfer across to the approach students adopt to their academic curriculum.

In the extra-curricular domain there is a large range of bands, ensembles, choirs, dance troupes and clubs for students to choose from, which results in over sixty percent of students participating in one or more of these opportunities across the College.

Throughout the year, students are able to showcase their talents at a number of events show as the College Inter-Clan Creative Arts Festival, occasions such as the ‘Singing up a Storm’, ‘Live to Dance’ and ‘Solo Concerto’ competitions, extending through to a number of eisteddfods such as the Beenleigh and Ipswich Eisteddfods.

with Susannah Friis Our daughter is doing a gap year this year, and as part of that, is spending eight weeks in Nepal. She had chosen Nepal way before the earthquakes hit, in fact, she bought her flights the day before the first earthquake in April.

You can imagine as parents, the prospect of her still going to Nepal after not one, but two significant disasters, was challenging to say the least!

Watching her walk under that ‘departure’ sign by herself was a very hard parenting moment. But we did it! Waiting to hear from her after the plane had landed that she was with staff and at the hotel was a very long two hours. But we did it!

In the lead up to her trip, the various responses about it to us as parents has been interesting. We’ve had people look at us like we are the most irresponsible parents in the world, others who just shake their heads and say they wouldn’t allow their child to do it, those who’ve just said they wouldn’t be able to do it, and those few who thought it was fantastic.

I chatted it over with a wise and wonderful friend of mine and worried that if something happened to her, and we knew we could have stopped her going, we would never forgive ourselves. She said, “Stopping her from going would have been an abuse of your parental power.�

That gave me so much comfort in the days before her flight. Although we probably could have talked her out of it (I think!), there is no way we should have. Whenever we’re given the privilege of an invitation by our adult children to weigh in on their decision making, we need to be mindful that it is just that - a privilege. We don’t have any right to say what they should do once grown. We need to give them that unconditional love - regardless of whether that decision is going to make us uncomfortable by stressing us or causing us to worry.

We’ve already had a bit of practice with this, since our 24 year old son will never, ever have a nice safe job in an office and a house in the suburbs five doors down from us.

He has always sought an ‘unsafe’ life and has never shied away from doing ‘the hard thing’ either. Not that he is reckless or risk-taking for the sake of it, quite the opposite.

His decisions are calculated and thoughtful. But they are not ‘safe’ from a parental perspective.

Too often we view our children as possessions, something to be proud of and shown off to our friends. And we are far too often worried about how their decisions affect us, rather than them.

We need to take a step back sometimes and check where we are coming from. Are we advising them based on our fears or their best life, whatever that may look like?

Our children are not ‘ours’. They are their own. And the more we realise that, the more peace we will have, no matter what they decide to do or where they decide to go to do it.

Students get on board with new rowing club Springfield Anglican College has become the first school to join the new Youth Row Ipswich Rowing Club.

Head of College, Mr Steve Croft said that he was thrilled so many Grade 7 students have expressed an interest in trying out a sport that is new to the College.

“We like to give our students every opportunity we can to try as many new experiences in life whether they be in an academic sense or with their sport.

“When former oarsmen, Mr Simon Newcomb OAM and Mr Jon Thomas the Foundation President made an appointment with me to talk about rowing I asked my Head of Sport and HPE Mr Andy Holmes to join with me and both of us agreed that this was an initiative that we would introduce here at Springfield Anglican College,” Mr Croft declared.

Rowing Australia National Coach Education and Development Officer Mr Ron Batt said that Springfield Anglican College had been the beneficiary of an Adopt a School Program grant of rowing ergometers and that the College will be commencing a land-based rowing program in Fourth Term this year that will lead into an onwater program for the first time in Ipswich in over 100 years.

“With the Rio Olympic Games exactly one year away, we know that there will be a spike in interest from a huge number of young people wanting to try the sport of rowing and the fact that Ipswich and Springfield is one of the largest residential and commercial growth areas in South East Queensland, Rowing Australia is very keen to support new clubs in this area,” Mr Batt said.

Former Queenstown and Wanganui Rowing Club oarsman Mr Ian Richards has thrown his full weight behind the new Ipswich Club. A local plumber living in Ipswich Mr Richards is helping the new club with building ideas and development that will be very important once full approval is given for a new Shed to be built to house new equipment at Goodna.

Mr Dennis Taylor who has been appointed the Clubs Director of Rowing is thrilled to be involved.

“What I have already seen is a huge depth of talent in the Grade 7s at Springfield Anglican College.

“Our plan is to build a very large base at this new club by involving a number of local schools that could, within five years make us one of the largest rowing clubs in Queensland.

“Our vision is to help provide the athletes necessary for Queensland rowing to once again win a Kings and Queens Cup for the State and having the Minister of Sport Mr Bill Byrne right behind what we are doing is an added incentive.

“When one considers that there are 15 secondary schools in the Ipswich and Springfield catchment area, I believe very strongly that this area has the potential to generate many future Olympians,” Mr. Taylor said We are here!

In todays competitive world, there aren’t always opportunities for the average student to step outside their comfort zone and explore their ideas to develop the life skills that translate to confidence in everyday life.

The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield will sponsor a representative of local youth to attend this years Rotary Youth Program of ENrichment (RYPEN) Camp and is calling for expressions of interest from local students who would like to participate.

RYPEN aims to provide young people aged 14 to 17 years with the opportunity to develop their leadership potential alongside their peers in a supportive environment.

RYPEN encourages participants to explore their ideas in problem solving, team and group activities, and gain experiences that will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards. As a part of this, RYPEN is about building confidence and developing skills to cope in a range of situations. RYPEN is also about having fun and broadening the cultural, social and academic horizons of participants.

The program offers a variety of activities over a weekend including a number of theory based sessions that allow participants to increase their knowledge and improve their skills in leadership, team building, problem solving and creative thinking. Local group, Lions Club of Greater Springfield is recycling spectacles in order for them to be sent on to Lions Recycle for Sight Australia.

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program, headquartered in Queensland and operating throughout Australia and overseas.

Recycle for Sight Australia has collected thousands of pairs of used spectacles, sunglasses, new frames and other equipment. The program distributes regraded spectacles to many parts of the world to Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs and other humanitarian organisations for distribution to poor people in need at no expense or obligation on the recipient.

Over the 15 years that the Australian program has existed, the program has delivered 2.5 million pair to countries in Africa, Europe, Middle East, Indian Sub continent, East Asia, and the Far East, including China, the countries of the Pacific Rim and Southern Asia and Oceania.

If you have any old glasses that are no longer needed, they can be dropped off to Big W, Orion, who is a collection point for the eyeglasses. It is hoped that local optometrists will participate and become collection points too.

Welcome to the August column of the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. The westerly winds came early this year, so hopefully they will give us a miss at Ekka time. My mother used to say that the secret of keeping warm and well is to ensure your feet did not get cold so there’s a bit of folk wisdom for you all...no guarantees though!

For our July outing, a group of us met at the Hall to travel in convoy to the Robotic Dairy at Tamrookum outside Beaudesert. We stopped for coffee at Jubilee Park and then it was on to the dairy where we were met by Farmer Greg for our tour. Greg’s talk was fascinating and we received a new insight into modern dairying; it was impossible not to be impressed by the efficient operation of the facility. Then we headed back through Beaudesert for a pleasant lunch at the Veresdale Hotel, arriving back in Camira just before 3pm after another successful Club outing. The picture is of some of the group outside the Dairy.

August’s activity will be an overnight stay in Toowoomba (26-27 August) after following the old Cobb and Co route from Gatton. (We traversed the first half of the route some time ago). We will travel through Grantham, Murphy’s Creek and Spring Bluff arriving for dinner and an overnight stay at the Grammar View Motel. After breakfast on the Thursday morning, we will visit the Cobb and Co Museum and make our way home in our own time.

July’s speaker was club member Patrick Galligan who gave us an insight into the heroism of soldiers in World War II and shared stories of his own family’s wartime service; it was sobering to see the faces of such young and brave men, many of whom gave their lives to the cause.

In August, our speaker will be Frank Levey to speak about Queensland Rail Travel entitlements for seniors and to provide advice on tour bookings.

September’s coffee morning will be at 10am on Friday 11 September at the Coffee Club at Brookwater.

August’s pub lunch will be at noon on Thursday 20 August at the Blue Fin Fishing Club at Inala.

September’s pub lunch will be at noon on Tuesday 15 September at the Spring Lake Hotel, Springfield.

New products for fleas and ticks

As we head into the paralysis tick season again, it is good to know we have some new choices this year for dogs to help control this very dangerous creature. As a bonus, these products are also very effective against our pet’s old annoying hanger-on, the flea.

So far this year, a new type of insecticide in the form of a monthly and a three monthly chewable tablet have been released for use in dogs. These products offer some obvious benefits. They are a tasty round chewy tablet which most dogs will eat like a treat. A lot of dogs can be suspicious, particularly if offered a treat by a vet but these chews seem to be very palatable. Unlike previous spot-on products and collars, they are not affected by swimming and bathing.

The products can be given to puppies from eight weeks of age and from 2kg in weight. The medication is safe and does not have to be given with or without food and will suit all canine breeds.

After dosing, the products will kill ticks within 24 hours before your pet becomes sick from the delivery of tick toxin into the system as the tick feeds. I have already noticed some dead, dried out ticks on the skin of dogs on these products, so just pull them out if you notice them.

Fleas take 8-12 hours to die. Occasionally clients will see a lot of fleas moving on the coat at this time as the insecticide will overstimulate the flea’s nervous system and they can become very active before they die. This can worry pet owners who do not think there are fleas on their pets. In environments thick with fleas, the end result is the fleas present will die before laying more eggs and the flea’s life cycle will be broken.

Unfortunately for cats there is nothing new for ticks as they are so much more susceptible to the effects of insecticide. Comfortis tablets though, a very quick killer of fleas in dogs, are now available for use in cats.

The project’s youngest helper at the Bottle Alley Mural.

With only a few days to the final event of the Animating Spaces Ipswich River Life Project on Saturday 22 August, the project team is making the most of good weather, locals’ support and community spirit to finalise the project and showcase local skills and talent engaged in the project.

As a result of this initiative, one of the projects, Bottle Alley Mural (BAM), helped to discover a number of local, rare and valuable bottles linked to Ipswich’s history.

To date, BAM attracted and involved over 100 individuals who took brushes in their hands and helped to capture Ispwich’s bottle history. The project attracted attention of people from every path of life, from CEOs to homeless, from young to seniors. Local business also provided a helping hand through contributions and extra deals to volunteers involved in the project, demonstrating true community spirit.

The project brought great energy and creativity into the city mall, thanks to local schools’ students and clients of Springfield CPL enjoying this unusual challenge.

A recent call from a member of the public made the Project Coordinator, Julie Maddocks of Creative HeART, speechless. The caller, thanks to his friend’s awareness of the project through local media, offered a freshly unearthed large collection of bottles to the project. It is estimated that the collection contains over 300 old bottles and jars, with a large number linked to Ipswich turn of century’s history and considered rare and valuable.

Local Ipswich Historical Society of Redbank will be the immediate beneficiary of this unexpected offer. “It is so rewarding to see such a positive community outcome. This latest event truly exceeded our expectations,” said Jolanta Szymczyk, the project’s Community Coordinator and local Creative HeARTer. The bottles’ stories will be revealed at the Bottle Alley, Ipswich City Mall on Saturday 22 August at 1pm. A vertical garden installation, SPROUT Ispwich at Bradfield Bridge, welcomes visitors and offers giveaway seed bombs from 9am.

From 2pm till 4pm edible plants will be shared with the community. At 4pm, #projectispwich commences an artisan market which will showcase Ipswich’s inspired fabric designs.

The community is invited to take part in the People’s choice voting of the best Ipswich’s inspired fabrics.

A message from the Mayor’s Desk

BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE The Springfield area is currently a hive of activity with all the building work occurring especially around Orion Springfield Central. The new Bunnings Warehouse store and the Mater Hospital Springfield will soon open their doors and we look forward to witnessing that.

Mark September 5 in your diary as this is the date that we will officially open the Robelle Domain Lagoon. A fun day is planned on the opening day with roving performers and entertainment and of course the lagoon will be open for swimmers. Springfield Markets in the park area of Robelle Domain will also be in full swing with food stalls and rides and there will be a fireworks display at 7.30pm.

The world class $13.8 million lagoon swimming pool which has been jointly by Ipswich City Council and the Federal Government is the centrepiece of stage two of Robelle Domain. The zero to over a metre depth lagoon is equal in size to Southbank’s famous beach pool and expected to attract up to 100,000 visitors a year. We invite you to come down and check out what is on offer.

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of helping Orion Springfield Central launch Orion Jobs Hub. This great initiative is about connecting local jobs with local job seekers in the Springfield region.

The centre has an additional 60 plus retailers opening later this year which will see approximately 700 new job opportunities become available for the local area. Local job seekers can search for local jobs at www.orionjobshub.com.au This is a free service for both employers and jobseekers. The Stage 2 expansion of Orion Springfield Central will include Coles, Target, Event Cinemas, JB Hi-Fi, Orion Hotel and an additional 60 specialty retailers.

A prominent feature of Orion Springfield Central will be Peter McMahon’s Swim Factory. Mr McMahon is a long-time Ipswich resident who turned the Ipswich CBD site of the family’s former iconic business McMahon’s Soft Drinks factory into an indoor swim school in 1992. He has now built a new facility – a 20m heated pool in Springfield Central as part of the expansion of Orion Springfield Central creating a link between the city’s past history and its future.

The Springfield area will also welcome some of the top names in golf later this month for The 2015 Isuzu Queensland Open at Brookwater Golf and Country Club. The titles will be held over four days from August 20 to 23 and will involve 72-holes of stroke-play as professional golfers battle for The TB Hunter Cup and a slice of the $110,000 prize purse. I’m hoping while the experts are in town to pick up some more tips to further improve my own performance on the course.

Floodlines tells Queensland’s story The resilience of Queenslanders in times of adversity is at the heart of Floodlines, a display now at Ipswich Central Library until September 13.

Floodlines is a State Library of Queensland (SLQ) travelling display using technology to share memories of the 20102011 floods and Cyclone Yasi.

Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said some of the people affected by the natural disasters had shared their own experiences in 13 personal video stories as part of the display.

“Augmented reality technology will also allow visitors to use the iPads provided to simulate the effects of the floods and Cyclone Yasi on several Queensland areas,” Cr Pahlke said.

“Finally, through photos in the Flood and Cyclone Mosaic, Queenslanders help tell the rich and complex story of a summer we will never forget.

“Community members are also encouraged to upload their own photos to the Mosaic, and contribute to the State’s memory.”

Contributions to the Mosaic will be considered for inclusion in SLQ’s John Oxley Library’s collection.

State Librarian Janette Wright said Floodlines was a special project that helps make sense of the past and acknowledges the spirit of recovery.

“Floods and other disasters are a part of life in this state and the State Library has a responsibility to collect material about these disasters, to create a legacy for future generations,” Ms Wright said.

“This is also chance for communities to collect material, record local memories, create digital stories, and promote those stories online – helping to add to Queensland’s collective memory.”

The virtual exhibition can be found on SLQ’s website, www.slq.qld.gov.au/whats-on/events/travel.

New traffic lights at Augustine Heights and Goodna The new traffic lights at the intersection of Keidges Road and Brittains Road, Augustine Heights and Bellbird Park will be a big boost for residents of the area and parents whose children attend Augusta State School and Redbank Plains State High School. Weather permitting, it is expected that the signals will be operational within the next month. New traffic lights at Alice and Church Streets, Goodna are also due for completion within the next month.

The Diggers’ Rest upgrade The Diggers’ Rest at the corner of Queen and Church Streets, Goodna where the ANZAC Day services are held every year has had a facelift. The Diggers’ Rest is a historic site in Goodna and features a war memorial consisting of a white marble obelisk commemorating 124 soldiers from Goodna, Redbank Plains, Redbank and Darra who lost their lives in World War I and World War II. The memorial was unveiled on 24 September 1921 by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Matthew Nathan.

Improvements include raised sandstone planters and replacement of the pavers in different colours creating a mixed pattern. A generous use of sandstone and improved landscaping has provided a more fitting surrounding for this important local landmark.

2015 Pasifika Spring Festival – Saturday 29 August This yearly event is held at Evan Marginson Park Woogaroo Street, Goodna from 3pm to 8pm. There will be a showcase of multicultural performances, food stalls, Elders marquee and children’s activities including free rides, cooking workshop and soccer clinics. Bring a rug to sit on and enjoy the entertainment.

2015 Jacaranda Festival Friday 23 October - Sunday 25 October The Jacaranda Festival is held every year towards the end of October at Evan Marginson Park Woogaroo Street, Goodna. It runs from Friday afternoon through to Sunday afternoon with a talent quest, primary school choir and band competitions, fireworks, entertainment, rides, car show and numerous stalls. Here we are almost at the end of a very cold winter. At least August brings us to the start of longer and warmer days, off course westerly winds, the Brisbane Ekka, and in the third week, Seniors Week. For this important week we have invited Vicky Mynott, local author as guest speaker at our Seniors Week branch meeting on the 18th August to talk about her latest book, Wacol, Wolston and Woogaroo. This presentation will be of interest to many locals.

To recount briefly last month, we had Christmas in July at the Clubhouse. Lunch was a hearty affair catered and served to members by Con the Caterer. This was followed by entertainment from popular vocalist Judy James.

Members of the club also joined up with the Ipswich National Seniors branch to visit the Auto Museum at Hampton outside Toowoomba. This trip proved to be a very interesting day out, especially for the blokes as there is such a huge collection of automobiles on display. I might add it was also the coldest day of the year with a wind that ripped through everything; fortunately for us the sleet and snow was further on at Stanthorpe.

The September morning coffee club on Wednesday 2nd September will meet at the Coffee Club, Orion, Springfield at 10.00am and for the more venturous, the Day Trippers are planning an expedition to Coochie Mudlo Island on Tuesday, 8th September, so trippers, be prepared.

While seemingly a long way away, a reminder that the Goodna/Redbank Branch AGM is to be held on Tuesday 15th September. New Zone 101 Chair, Rob Spencer will be visiting the branch to meet members. Nomination forms for Branch Office bearers and general committee can be obtained from the Branch Secretary at the August branch meeting.

The Goodna/Redbank Branch meets each month on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna, 10.00am for 10.30am. For further information please contact Val Randle on 3297 5735.

Springfield Police Station - Augustine Heights I remember in 2008 being with the then Police Minister Hon Judy Spence and local State member Hon Jo-Ann Miller at the sod turning of the Springfield Police Station at Augustine Heights.

Augusta Parkway was a two lane road and the site then seemed very deep into the bush as the existing two lanes were on the Brookwater side of Augusta Parkway.

The Springfield Police Station now fronts the duplicated Augusta Parkway and our State Member Hon Jo-Ann Miller is the current minister for Police.

The officer in charge since its opening in February 2010 is Senior Sergeant Geoff Noller. Geoff has done a wonderful job and is very

The first Wednesday of July was our meeting day. Our guest speaker for the month was Lyn Bell who brought along her Bromalaids and told us how to look after them.

Many were in flower, with some available to purchase.

Thank you, Lyn. On 8 July, some of our members brought along paintings, woodwork, needlework etc. It was really good to see what some of our members do for a hobby. It was a good morning with a lovely morning tea and enjoyed by everyone.

Movie day was 15 July and we watched Judi Dench in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Our bus trip to Bestbrooke Mountain Resort was on 22 July. Bestbrooke was a working farm up until the 1980â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. In 1995, the village bunkhouse was built to capture the School Camp Market. It was sold in 2001 and had a couple of years showing no growth before being purchased by the current owners, Ray and Elise Vincent, who worked tirelessly to rebuild it to what Bestbrooke is today.

We had billy tea and damper and a ride around the farm and then all gathered in the restaurant for a lovely Christmas in July lunch, which was very enjoyable.

On 29 July we had our Hoy morning which everyone enjoyed with goodies to win.

It has been a very cold month, well the mornings and nights but Spring is just around the corner! The bus trip to Canberra is not far away, 21st September. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hope itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s warmed up by then!

Our meeting last month was most interesting with Nadine Webster from Queensland Police speaking on the subject of Safety For Seniors. It is surprising the number of people out there trying to take advantage of the senior population.

The meeting was attended by 20 people who all went away with a lot of knowledge on how to deter these people.

The statistics were surprising with elder abuse from family members being one of the highest problems.

Several members also enjoyed a fun day at Robelle Domain with a BBQ and games organised by Carol and Ray, with help from Lachlan. A most enjoyable time was had by all.

Jeanine is organising a Coffee â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Chat day each week.

The first was held on the last Tuesday of July and was attended by nine members at Journeys Cafe at the GE building. Everybody had a great time with great food and coffee. Thanks to Jeanine for a good afternoon Our next meeting is on 19th August at Springfield Tavern at 6.30 pm. We will be having a Seniors Dinner followed by some rounds of Fun Trivia. The Tavern has a good range of meals available from $13. Tea and coffee will be supplied. Entry is $3.
