Promoting a Healthier Community

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Our 14 year old is not the sporty type. She plays club netball but absolutely hates school sports. You know, the cross country, the athletics days, HPE as a subject up to grade 10 - she hates it all. And I have to agree with her somewhat on the unfairness of it. Fair enough if HPE is an elective just like art, drama or music. But it’s not. It’s compulsory, as are the cross country and athletics days.

Don’t get me wrong, I agree that exercise is good for us. But so is art, drama and music. There are many studies and research on the benefi ts of the arts on us as human beings (there are even degrees for art therapy, drama therapy and music therapy!).

Let’s see the sporty kids having to participate in compulsory choir or an art exhibition or a play. Let’s put them out of their comfort zone and expect them to not only enjoy it but to excel! But alas, I doubt that will ever be the case.

It’s tempting to write her a note to get her out of sports day or cross country. It’s tempting to just let her stay home for the day (like I know many parents do!). But what is that teaching her? Life is full of things we don’t want to do and I don’t want her growing up thinking that if she doesn’t like something or if a certain thing takes her out of her comfort zone, she can just not do it.

When she’s an adult in just a few short years, going to uni and working and then maybe raising a family, there’s an even greater pull towards only doing what she wants. She’ll be able to make her own decisions. So now is the time for her to learn that life doesn’t always call for us to do what we want. If all her childhood she’s been able to ‘get out of ’ things, that will be her default when she’s older.

We all know those adults, don’t we? The ones who just flat out refuse to do the hard things or the things that they don’t necessarily enjoy. And I fear we are breeding a generation of people who will only do the things they want to do. By getting our kids out of things and constantly telling them to ‘go for their dreams’ and ‘if that job/person/house/car doesn’t make you feel good simply change it!’, we are telling them that all that matters is how they ‘feel’. And we all know what happens when we live by feelings alone!

I have the following quote above my desk: ‘Cease endlessly striving for what you want to do and learn to love what must be done’ (Goethe). Life is a tricky balancing act of chasing our dreams and reaching our potential, and simply doing what must be done, regardless of how it makes us feel.

I doubt that the lesson my daughter will take away from having to do sport will be to engage with it after she graduates but she will have learnt another lesson of not shirking the uncomfortable or unpleasant things in life. And that’s worth the moaning we have to endure in the lead up to each sport day!

Phone: 3737 2100 Formed in 2013 by a small group of friends who wanted to be able to run together safely in the local Springfield area, Springfield Running Group (SRG) has since held countless free sessions every week to support both runners and walkers in achieving their fitness goals. “At SRG we believe in an environment where people of all ages and fitness levels can come together to support each other, to reach their running and fitness goals,� said committee member, Leigh. “Not everyone wants to run a marathon but together we can help one another reach our individual goals.�

The free sessions are provided by a dedicated group of 30 volunteer Run Leaders who are in the process of obtaining blue cards and first aid qualifications, with a number of leaders already in possession of the qualifications.

Four years on, SRG now has over 1700 members on their Facebook page and 500 financial members. Additionally, the group has recently become affiliated with QRun which, amongst other benefits, ensures that all runners are covered by personal accident insurance.

At the recent Gold coast Airport Marathon, SRG was the third largest team in the Fitness Teams Challenge and was awarded a plaque to commemorate this achievement. SRG has also been included in the soon to be released Active and Healthy Ipswich Guide and are one of only a few groups that offer free sessions in the local area. “We have also recently launched our own website so that we can better communicate with our members, provide an online shop where members can purchase team wear and to support the major sponsors and many businesses that have partnered with the group to provide members with generous discounts.�

Last month I foreshadowed that an announcement on whether the Brisbane Lions would be coming to Ipswich was imminent.

I am now pleased to report some great news: Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann has confirmed they will set up a training and administration base at Springfield Central. Stay tuned for more information about this before the end of the AFL season.

This is major coup for our city and will include the construction of a 10,000 to 15,000 seat stadium. As well as serving as a training facility for the men’s side, the stadium will be the home of the Brisbane Lions AFL Women’s side.

This is just the beginning of good news for the Springfield area. It’s exciting to see construction of a new Springfield Central Sports Complex off Sinnathamby Boulevard under way.

Funded by developer contributions of $34 million, this $40 million project is the single biggest sports and recreation project in our city’s history. A total of 22 hectares will be fully developed for use by the community and sporting clubs.

The project is due for completion in late 2018 and will include eight tennis courts, 16 netball courts, eight rectangular fields, four ovals, an athletics track, three club houses and 600 car parks.

Providing community infrastructure for our growing city was the major focus when council handed down its 2017-2018 Budget recently.

We’re investing more money than ever before in roads, bridges and community facilities with spending on infrastructure up 46 per cent to $146 million.

We haven’t forgotten the environment, with sustainability still front and centre.

In a major boost for the environment this year’s budget includes the launch of a new citywide Greening Ipswich Tree Program. Under the program, 500,000 trees will be planted over the next five years across Ipswich.

Local students stage classic musical It may take a village to raise a child but it takes a whole school community to stage a production!

With staff, students, past students and parents all contributing their time and energy, St Augustine Colleges performances of Grease, the musical, are sure to wow audiences.

Scheduling three performances of this timeless classic, it has been all hands on deck with choreography, set design and creation and costume making to ensure the hard work of Director Emma Snook and Producer Holly Bush shines bright on the night.

After auditions for the musical were held at the end of last year, crew and cast have been hard at work to bring audiences a show they won’t soon forget.

“The students participated in a holiday ‘boot camp’ of intensive rehearsal in the January school holidays, which was a great experience because it allowed the cast to get to know each other,” said Cultural Support Officer, Cat Isaacs.

“It was a perfect opportunity for them to explore their characters, start understanding the background of the musical and the time period. And it’s a big commitment for all involved - since the start of the year, we have been rehearsing every Sunday and every Thursday afternoon after school.

“Emma Snook is our Senior Music teacher and is an obsessed Grease fan so it was her idea to perform Grease this year. Grease really speaks to young people, allowing them to relate to the experiences, dreams, difficulties and personalities of the main cast which has definitely been seen this year. We hope that we can reach out to all students, to grow individually and as a team.”

With students from every year level performing in the production, the musical represents the P-12 identity and ethos of the school. The leads will be performed by Eden Pardede in Year 11 as Sandy and Lachlan Redfern in Year 12 as Danny.

The performances will be held at the College located at 50 St Augustine’s Drive, Augustine Heights, on Friday 18 August at 7pm and two shows on Saturday 19 August at 1.30pm and 7pm. The cost of tickets, which can be purchased through trybooking (www.trybooking.com/QLMY), are adults $25 and children $20.

Everywhere I go throughout our local community, one of the most commonly raised issues is the NBN rollout. Almost every day my office receives phone calls with reports of slow speeds, drop outs or simply no connection at all. Due to this overwhelming community feedback, the first NBN Crisis Meeting was held last month for local residents to raise their concerns in person.

Joining me was Michelle Rowland MP the Shadow Minister for Communications alongside State Candidate for the seat of Jordan, Charis Mullen.

Almost 100 local residents attended and shared their experiences of how the failed NBN rollout had affected them. Among the stories shared were examples of where homes had been completely cut off from any internet service for months at a time.

I also heard from residents who have been forced to undertake their studies using the wi-fi at local restaurants because their new NBN service is simply not up to standard.

The latest information from the NBN company indicates that as of November 2016 less than half the homes in our community had access to the NBN. The Government first promised all homes would be connected by this time which has left many residents frustrated and angry at the rollout.

Coming together as a group at last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NBN Crisis Meeting was the first step in many to holding those responsible accountable for the failed rollout.

Ten years on and still going strong Ipswich Cares is making a difference Now in its tenth year, Ipswich Cares has helped a humanitarian need during September each year. Ipswich Cares has worked with Compassion Australia and helped fulfil projects in the Philippines, Ethiopia, Northern India, Bangladesh, Rwanda, Nepal, Thailand, Bali, Egypt and Ukraine.

This year Ipswich Cares will focus on helping Compassion Australia provide fresh water for children in Kupang, Indonesia and also focus on a local Ipswich need.

Cr David Morrison, along with others, has walked across Ipswich to help raise awareness of Ipswich Cares every year since its inception. This year former Ipswich Mayor John Nugent will walk once again. John Nugent will be 82 years of age and is confident he will complete the 50 km walk once again.

On the first of September, walkers leave Orion Springfield Central by bus at 4am and head to Rosewood. The walkers then set off from Rosewood at 5am and walk across Ipswich City to Orion Lagoon.

Celebrating 10 years of operation this year, the small group of businessmen and women who formed the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce has grown to now boast over 150 members.

A range of local businesses are represented in the group, from law firms to orthodontics to real estate agents and veterinary surgeries.

The group holds two meetings a month; one committee meeting and also a Business After Hours meeting which gives business owners and representatives the opportunity to network with like-minded people and hear from guest speakers.

“We exist to facilitate business to business opportunities, to lobby the Government sector on behalf of businesses, to educate members and inform them on various topics,” said President of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce chapter, Neil Coupland.

“The benefits of membership are wide and varied...from networking to support, information, collaboration, HR advice and training, there isn’t a business that won’t gain from their membership.

“Members also have a profile page on our website where they can offer fellow members discounts on product or services. We also hold events to fundraise for charities, such as Hats for High Tea and Christmas in July, which, this year raised funds for ‘Giving with Love’.

“There will also be a degustation dinner this month at Brookwater and we’re planning to celebrate our 10 year anniversary with a special dinner in October.”

Probus Club Update

by Robyn and John Girdler Our planned June outing to visit the historical museum at the Lake Apex Park in Gatton was postponed to a future date as, for various reasons, many members were unable to attend. What busy lives we retirees live!

Lunch at the Hotel Monier in Darra was most enjoyable. The pleasant winter’s day allowed us to eat on the outside patio. There was a good roll up of members and we enjoyed a delicious meal which, despite the large number of other patrons, was served promptly.

At our July meeting, we welcomed Ben Harm, a Senior Constable of Police and Officer in Charge of the Centenary North Police Beat at Jindalee. His presentation focussed on security when we are at home and out and about. The task of locking your doors and windows will deter villains or offenders who will move on to easier unlocked premises rather than trying to overcome the security measures. Keeping wallets, purses and keys out of sight was another tip for us. We now know the importance of securing our houses and possessions, especially checking that everything is secure and locked before going out.

Ben also ran a quick question and answer segment. Many questions concerned vehicle road rules of which intersection and round-about questions were prominent. Hopefully, Ben will be able to return at a later date to answer more fully our many questions on up-to-date road rules. After the presentation concluded, Ben received a small gift in appreciation for his presentation which was most informative.

Afternoon tea was supplemented at the July meeting by a delicious birthday cake which was cut by one of our members for whom this month’s birthday was a ‘significant one’.

The Brookwater Clubhouse again offered a private and cosy venue for our July coffee morning with about 12 in attendance.

Lunch at the Springfield Tavern was another great get-together with about 18 members in attendance. Lunches and coffee mornings are a great opportunity to socialise with other members in a relaxed atmosphere.

We are looking forward to this month’s outing which is to visit Woodlands which is an historic house in Marburg.

Springfield Central Library a certainty Delivery of a new library at Springfield Central is now a certainty after council authorised its CEO to negotiate a lease for a site at Orion Springfield Central.

Acting Mayor Paul Tully said the new library would be situated off Main Street and be about 2,000 square metres in size.

“There is community demand for increased library services in the city’s eastern suburbs,” Cr Tully said.

“This move is in line with council’s key commitment to open a new library at Springfield Central.

“Libraries have evolved greatly over time to where they are now multifunctional community hubs about much more than borrowing books and they will continue to play an important role in our community for years to come.

“This is an exciting development for people in and around the Springfield area.

“Once the lease is finalised, the library fit out will commence.”

Cr Tully said council had also authorised its CEO to continue discussions with the state government about the possibility of a future civic building at 130 Southern Cross Circuit, Springfield Central.

“Council owns a 5,000 square metre block in Southern Cross Circuit which down the track could become a major government precinct,” Cr Tully said.

How well do you know the local water birds?

If you go for a walk around Spring, Regatta or Discovery Lakes, you might see a number of different types of wild water birds swimming in the water or sitting on the banks. How many of these different species have you seen?

Pacific Black Duck Found all over Australia, these ducks are a mottled brown colour, rather than the black suggested by their name. They are versatile birds and will live in any water source, feeding on the seeds of water plants, and small water insects and molluscs.

Australian Wood Duck Another common species, wood ducks nest in hollow trees close to water. You might see them foraging in shallow water or on grass near the lakes.

Autralasian Swamphen (also known as Purple Swamphen) Swamphens don’t fly well, but they live together in groups and will shriek loudly at threats to their nests. In New Zealand, this same species is known as pu¯keko.

They sometimes steal eggs from other birds nests and may eat ducklings if they catch them.

Eurasian Coot Another common visitor to our lakes is the Coot. They eat aquatic plants, feeding on the surface and under the water. They sleep while floating on the water, and build their nests in the water reeds.

Hardhead Duck These dark brown ducks are more common in winter than in summer on our lakes. Males have a white eye, while females’ eyes are dark brown. They are able to dive deep to eat shrimp and small fish as well as water plants at the surface.

Cotton Pygmy Geese The Cotton Pygmy Geese seem to visit Springfield Lakes for only a couple of months each year. Over the past two years, these birds have been recorded to have been sighted in only two other places within a 50km radius from Springfield. The geese make their nest in a hollow tree up to ten metres above the ground, close to water. What brings them to our neighbourhood?

Little Black Cormorants Cormorants are often found in flocks, fishing together by diving under the surface or just sitting on the bank in the sun, drying their feathers. Their presence on our lakes means that our aquatic life is healthy.

Should you feed wild ducks?

Feeding ducks has been a favourite activity for kids for generations but unfortunately, it isn’t good for the birds. It is Ipswich City Council’s policy to discourage people from feeding wild birds, and various other wildlife organisations also recommend not feeding them. It displaces the foods that the birds should be eating, disrupts the natural ecosystem of the lake, and can be really bad for the birds’ digestion.

Please do not feed our wild ducks bread! Even though they love eating it, it can make them sick. Lettuce, peas or corn (raw or cooked) are better alternatives, but it’s best to not feed them at all. Admire them as you’re walking or sitting by the lake instead.

Our bus trip for June was a visit to Government House in Brisbane. Setting off with plenty of time to spare, firstly we visited Mt Coot-tha, it was a beaut clear morning with an amazing vista over the Brisbane area.

Arriving at Government House we were taken into the Investiture Room where morning tea was served from silver service tea pots and jugs, with exquisite Royal Doulton tea cups. After morning tea, the Aide spoke on the tasks the Governor, His Excellency Paul De Jersey conducts. During this, His Excellency arrived and spoke with our group, telling us he had to find a maroon hankie to go in his lapel pocket, being a Queenslander, it was very appropriate as it was State of Origin that night. He covered some of the work he does being Governor of Queensland.

From there, we were divided into two groups with very informative guides for a tour of the House, amazing pictures on display the magnificent dining table, lounge areas, all very opulent. Some of the paintings on display were on loan from the Queensland Art Gallery. From antique sideboards to chandeliers it was an amazing tour. We then headed to the Monier Hotel for lunch.

Our last stop of the day was Wolston House. Although some of us had been there before, it was enjoyable to wander through the home, reflecting on how they ever kept it warm during winter with the gaps in the floor boards! Many of us reminisced about our days growing up with wood stoves, the old fly papers hanging from the ceilings.

At our clubs July 5th meeting, our guest speaker was none other than Susannah from The Greater Springfield Times. She gave an interesting talk about the history and workings of the paper. Much appreciated Susannah.

On 12 July it was our ‘Liars Day’ which caused a lot of hilarity. It works like this: three people tell tales of the meaning of a very complicated word, (Bob-Andassa-Joe) with Colin Harvey as emcee, where only one tale is correct, but the others really put a lot of work into making up their own outlandish fictitious meanings. 19th July was trivia, all done in very good humour and had everyone scratching their heads trying to remember things. It was Games Day on 26 July, with members playing board games or just catching up with friends. Later in the morning our BBQ was lit, with chicken or meat patties on a bun on the menu, which are always enjoyable.

Our club is conducting a five day tour to the Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas lights 27 November-1 December, visiting horse studs in the Scone area on the way down, places of interest in Maitland, Hunter Valley and then home calling into Timbertown on the way. Westside Christian Church welcomes Pastor Keith Pellicaan to the newly created role of Community Pastor for the Camira/Springfield area.

Pastor Keith is keen to work with people of all ages in the community and provide care to those who may be experiencing difficult times in their lives. He has worked in churches across Australia and more recently in Collingwood Park and Redbank Plains.

Westside Christian Church has been established in the Camira area for over 15 years and meets every Sunday morning at Langley Park Hall, Camira, directly behind the Caltex Service Station. Weekly activities include, Kids Groups, Sunday School, Young Adults Growth Groups, Seniors activities and the very popular Mainly Music program.

To welcome Pastor Keith to the community, the church will be hosting a BBQ where local residents will be encouraged to meet Pastor Keith and enjoy some great food together.

South West Brisbane Stamp Club Update

Queensland’s first stamp One hundred and fifty-seven years ago, the colony of Queensland released its first stamp. It was 1 May 1860 and Queensland had just gained its independence as a colony from New South Wales the previous year.

The subject on the stamp, as was usual on many of the colonies stamps, was Queen Victoria. What made this a stand out stamp was that it used a portrait painted by Alfred Chalon.

This portrait of the young queen was used by a number of the British colonies around the world but it is the design used on the Queensland stamp which made it the most noteworthy.

It is designs like this which show these stamps as actual works of art. These stamps are extremely collectable with a wide range of values and colours. Fortunately it is not expensive to form a collection of these 100+ year old stamps.

As president of the South West Brisbane Stamp Club, I can offer mentoring for anyone wishing to start a collection of these or any other stamps. It’s a great hobby for both young and old.

THE CREATIVE heART

Every journey starts with a single step. How many times have you heard someone say “I don’t have a creative bone in my body”? You may have even said it yourself.

We seem to forget that most of us are creative in many different ways each and every day. Whether it’s planning the family meals for the week, working out how to manage a family budget or even playing with our kids. Anything we do gets better with practice and the support and encouragement from those around you.

We all make mistakes and it’s all a part of learning. I nearly allowed this to stop me from continuing to experiment and learn but I knew how much my art helps me de-stress and even allows me to work through things whilst I’m doing it. I have since learnt that sometimes we ourselves are our harshest critics.

Because I felt discouraged on my own, I joined a few art groups on Facebook.

I am now part of many crafty, arty and mixed media groups online which I find of great value. I found that as much as I enjoyed the interaction online I was still lacking that physical community support from other creatives in my area. I had only been living in Springfield Lakes for a very short time so I really didn’t know anyone who I could meet up with or talk to about my ideas or share the joy that comes from creating something you are proud of.

I went to the very first Creative heART meeting at QUT Springfield campus. Being an introvert this was a major step for me but I’m so glad I did. It has allowed me to create connections within my own community who I can meet up with regularly. I know my daughter absolutely loves attending these meetings as she loves hearing about what others are doing as well as trying new things herself.

This is the first time in my life that I feel a valid connection to others in my community and I can see huge benefits to myself and my daughter. Having people around us who have confidence in me has also been good for my health, mentally, emotionally and physically.

ROTARY CLUB of Greater Springfield

Rotary Youth Exchange has been providing intercultural exchange opportunities for secondary school students ages 15-19 since the 1920s. Students become cultural ambassadors for up to a full academic year and the host families can help build peace and international understanding, serving one of Rotary’s six areas of focus.

It’s an amazing life changing experience. A Rotary Youth Exchange student spends up to 12 months living and studying overseas.

Young Paul Gorbach grew up in Bregenz Austria at the foothills of the Austrian Alps and on the shore of Lake Constance, a talented kid at both tennis and water skiing. A high achiever at school, tennis star, and promising at the half marathon - it was all nice, but at age 15, he felt no particular pull in any direction. Until Rotary came along.

A conversation with some Rotary Youth Exchange students who had visited Australia gave Paul some advice and told him how exciting the exchange experience was.

Paul said “I had heard a few really cool things about Australia which made me very curious. Spending a year away sounded adventurous and I would have the chance to improve my English.” So this curiosity lead to Paul spending one year on Rotary Youth Exchange in Springfield, Australia.

This year, Paul participated in the program hosted by the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield with support from the Rotary Club of Goodna, Ipswich Australia. He stayed with three families, one of which included James Goss who would become a friend and fellow student at the Springfield Anglican College and future outbound Rotary Exchange student. Paul and 36 other Rotary Youth Exchange students went on Safari and visited Uluru, The Outback, the Great Barrier Reef, Melbourne and Moreton Island/Tangalooma. He also followed his passion for tennis and attended the Brisbane International tennis tournament to watch Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka compete. Of all his experiences Paul’s favourite was the Great Barrier Reef.

“This is the best program Rotary can be involved with because Rotary is all about changing lives,” says Paul.

Paul’s family visited his host families and his Aussie Rotary family last month. Paul returns home to Austria in August.

Historic Cricket Ground

On the corner of Springfield Parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial is an historic cricket oval surrounded by slash pine trees. Before Maha Sinnathamby and Bob Sharpless purchased 2860 Ha in 1992, the area was logged for many years for timber. The timber workers would down tools on a Friday afternoon and play a social game of cricket on an oval they constructed in what would have been the middle of nowhere.

The oval is officially named Don Preece Oval. Mr Don Preece was the Forest Officer and Fire Warden for Associated Forest Holdings. He was well known in the area for his association with Goodna State School and in the 1970s was the treasurer and secretary for the Goodna Rugby League Club. I was in the same class with his son Ian at Goodna State School.

Ipswich City Council recently worked with the Queensland Government’s Community Jobs program along with Challenge Employment to design and construct a pathway between the oval and Hymba Yumba along with a shelter and a seat on the oval.

Christmas Grants Program – Closes 13 August The Ipswich City Council Christmas Grants Program provides funding to a maximum of $2,000 to communitybased, not-for-profit organisations wishing to hold Christmas events or festivals in the City of Ipswich. Hookworm and your pet

Hookworm are tiny worms, 16mm long and very thin, which live attached to the intestine of dogs and cats. In reasonable numbers they can cause illness and even death.

There are two species of hookworm which affect dogs and cats in Australia. Ancylostoma species are found more in the north and Uncinaria species more in Victoria and Tasmania.

It is a parasite well evolved for survival. The eggs quickly embryonate and larva hatch and develop into a stage capable of infection either by ingestion or skin penetration. The adult worms attach to the small intestine and feed off blood and the intestinal wall.

Young puppies are the most severely affected by hookworm although dogs and cats of any age can be carriers and/or become ill. The clinical signs are diarrhoea, often with blood and mucous, anaemia, lethargy and poor coat condition.

Young puppies may fail to thrive, never reach their size potential and in severe cases will die. Puppies as young as one to two weeks old can be affected due to transmission of hookworm in milk from untreated mothers.

A faecal sample can be tested by your vet clinic for hookworm eggs. Hookworms produce a large number of distinct eggs and can be easily identified. Eliminating the worm with an effective wormer and then a regular worming regime is the treatment.

If your puppy is anaemic or very lethargic, then they may need to be hospitalised and given a life saving blood transfusion. Hookworms are rarely found in people but are significant as a cause of cutaneous larval migrans from larva penetrating human skin.

For both human and pet health, it is important to prevent contamination of your yard. Picking up dog faeces and regularly cleaning your catâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s litter tray will prevent build up of eggs in your environment. Bin faeces rather than place it in your garden.

Preventing hookworm burdens is very important in Queensland and much more satisfactory for you and your pet than dealing with a hookworm infection. Hookworm can be easily prevented by worming with a good quality wormer and following an appropriate regime that is initiated when you first visit your vet.
