Give to a local family this Christmas The Christmas Vouchers Appeal is now in full swing and has been helping Westside Community Care (WCC) provide support for struggling families in the Greater Springfield Region for 16 years. With this appeal and other fundraisers, WCC raise funds to purchase food vouchers from local businesses to the value of $50+ for struggling families to use during the Christmas period and throughout the New Year. I n t h e l a s t y e a r, W C C have distributed around 400 sets of vouchers to families in need throughout the Greater Springfield, Camira, Carole Park, and Gailes Region. The economic climate over the past few years has seen an increase in the number of families requiring this form assistance and WCC members are setting their goal at being able to help 450 families this year. Residents wanting to help WCC reach their goal of raising over $20 000 can give a tax deductible donation, donating gift vouchers or hamper items. Over $10,000 has already been raised with generous donations from IGA, Springfield Christian Family, Trackstar Alliance, Ipswich City Council, Ray White and Loan Market Golf Day, Cr David Morrison, Bernie Ripoll, Bank of QLD, Cardno and other private donors. If you can support in anyway please contact Phil from WCC on 0411 021 153 or send an email to phil@westsidecommunitycare.org.au. If you would like to nominate a struggling family to receive a voucher, you can also contact Phil on the above number or email.

Local Councillor David Morrison, wife Susan, daughter Harmony and son in law Alex, were at the station ready to ride the first passenger train to leave from Springfield station. A public transport dream became reality for Springfield and region residents with the official opening of the new Springfield passenger rail line. The $475 million Richlands to Springfield transport corridor project also includes a dual carriageway upgrade of the Centenary Highway to Springfield Parkway. Dressed in full mayoral regalia Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale was joined by Town Crier Mark Overell to give a rousing ceremonial welcome to the first passengers as they arrived at Springfield Central station. “This day marked the most significant opening of a completed infrastructure project since the Centenary Highway extension was completed to Springfield Parkway and more recently the Ipswich Motorway upgrade. “Since then we have seen Springfield Lakes and nearby Springfield Central, Brookwater and Augustine Heights experience extraordinary population growth to boost our city-wide population to 180,000. “In 18 years, Ipswich’s population will increase to an estimated 462,000. “The Springfield development has the strong support of council and from all side of politics at all levels of government. “I want to acknowledge the previous state government’s commitment to the Springfield rail project, and the current government for their commitment to completing this most vital piece of infrastructure for our city. “The opening of the Springfield rail line will go down in history as a major milestone, not only in the development of Springfield, but in the history of Ipswich as the birthplace of Queensland Rail. “It marks the beginning of the next chapter of development. “Ultimately we want to see the line extend to Redbank Plains, through to Ripley Valley, Yamanto and Ipswich Central.” Cr Pisasale also paid tribute to the vision of Maha Sinnathamby and his business partners in Springfield Land Corporation (SLC).

Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

If you are a regular reader of this column, you would know by now that I love Christmas. I love the rush, the entertaining, the present wrapping, the buzz in the air. I love it all. My husband, though, being not so keen on the rush and busyness of the season, was lamenting it’s excess and the fact that most of the time, the reason for the season is not even mentioned. It’s true, isn’t it? Christmas in the western world is often a time of excess. We spend too much, eat too much, drink too much, and the whole point of Christmas gets lost along the way, if it’s even remembered at all. It can be hard to see how any of what we currently do at Christmas time has any relationship to what happened in that manger over 2000 years ago. So, how do we get around that if we want to remember the real reason we celebrate it but not boycott the whole event? I’m not sure what the answer is for each individual but here’s how I look at it. When we rush around looking for that perfect gift for a loved one, we are honouring the gift humanity was given on the first Christmas. When we worry if there is enough food or that the meat is overcooked, we are demonstrating we care about the people we are feeding and want to give them the best there is. When we make up another bed on the lounge room floor, we are opening our home and showing love to others - something that the person who was born at Christmas talked a bit about. When we don’t sit down all day because we are on our feet ensuring everyone has enough drinks and food, we are serving others - another thing that the same person talked a bit about. When we go on a mad cleaning frenzy in preparation for our guests, we are really saying that their comfort and giving them pleasant surrounds is important to us. We can find the real meaning of Christmas in everything we do if we look at it a different way. For those who feel bothered by the over-commercialism, the tinsel, the secular emphasis on a fat man in a red suit, try shifting your focus and instead of grumbling and lamenting the lack of acknowledgement of the real reason for the season, embrace the festivities. What better way to say thank you for the ultimate gift we were given than loving, serving, laughing and thoroughly enjoying ourselves? So, from us to you, a merry Christmas. May it be safe, full of joy and abounding in fellowship, no matter how you spend it.

Creative Art Piece by Tricia Smout Photo courtesy of Jolanta Szymczyk If you are looking for inspiration to create small projects and keen to explore a variety of textile forms, a ‘must-see’ is the International Baltic Textile Miniatures, a unique collection originating from the Museum of the City of Gdynia in Poland. There is an accompanying exhibition by local artists, all members of the Qld Branch of the Australian Textile and Surface Design Association. This joint exhibition is open to the public until Christmas by appointment at Gallery 159, a dedicated textile gallery at 159 Payne Road, The Gap, see contact details below. Almost 90 small forms are on display, thanks to the close collaboration between TAFTA, ATASDA (Qld) and Museum of Gdynia, Poland. The idea was initiated by textile artist, Jolanta Szymczyk, a local Bellbird Park resident, and the driver behind the Creative Hub in Greater Springfield. The sponsoring organisation TAFTA has toured the exhibition extensively, attracting the attention of hundreds of people across Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and numerous regional art galleries. Jolanta, also President of ATASDA Qld, has been inspired by the overwhelming and positive responses, the impact the collection has been making, and its relevance to the community’s life. “There is a strong renewal of interest in a variety of textile forms. People are rediscovering and exploring new mediums and tapping into their own cultural heritage to create unique works,” said Jolanta, a passionate advocate for creative avenues and opportunities in the Springfield community. “More importantly, these forms bring people together and create a sense of community, whether it is in a local area or across the nation”. If you are creative yourself, run a creative business, are inspired by or drawn to creative work, and would like to participate in the start up group of the Creatives in the area, contact Jolanta about being part of a start up group with regular meetings in the local area. Send an email to Jolanta jse_00@optusnet.com.au or call her on 0405 336 240.

Sadly, every year our animal emergency centres are inundated over the Christmas holidays with pets whose illnesses could probably have been avoided. Some of these are life threatening, others not so much. So with the countdown to Christmas already begun here are some tips to help everyone have a safe and happy Christmas. When planning your own holidays, make sure you’ve thought about your pet’s accommodation. When going into boarding kennels or catteries dogs and cats will also need to be up-to-date with vaccinations, so now is a good time to hunt for that vaccination card to ensure your beloved pet doesn’t pick up something from his/her holiday. Kennel cough and cat flu are the more common diseases picked up by unvaccinated or over due pets. If you and your favourite pet are all spending Christmas together, there are a few toxic foods that should not be on their Christmas menu: • Chocolate – as little as 240g of dark chocolate in a 20kg dog can be highly toxic. • Macadamia nuts – as well as possibly causing an obstruction in the small intestines, they can also cause hind leg paralysis and high fevers. • Raisins and grapes – seemingly innocent, but can cause renal failure if eaten in great enough quantities. • Onions and garlic – only 30g per kilo is required to cause a severe hemolytic anemia which could be fatal to your pet. • Fatty foods – especially cuts of fat off meat. These fatty foods irritate the pancreas creating a pancreatitis which could see your pet in hospital for many days. • Cooked bones – remember to ensure all chicken/ turkey carcasses are discarded of properly. Cooked bones are far more likely to splinter and could end up causing an obstruction or even a perforation of the bowel. • Alcohol – it goes without saying that alcohol should never be given to pets, so ensure all alcohol is kept out of reach. Whilst enjoying the great summer heat, be mindful that older animals will be much more prone to heat stress or even heat stroke. Always ensure they have plenty of water and access to a shade. Never leave animals in a hot parked car, even if the window is open a few centimetres. When at the beach, large quantities of salt water when consumed can also be quite dangerous to your pet so ensure you keep encouraging them to drink fresh water. Christmas decorations can also be a great source of delight to your pet – especially younger animals, and cats. Ensure all hanging decorations are large enough that they can’t be swallowed, and unlikely to smash and cut paws if knocked from position. I would normally recommend not having decorations on the lower branches of a tree to avoid temptation. Tinsel is a great chocking hazard of cats, as are the cords for the Christmas lights, so try to keep these out of paws reach. Enjoy summer, stay safe and have a happy Christmas!

Adopt a pet this Christmas and everybody wins

Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) Rehoming Centres with litters of kittens and puppies arriving along with lost, stray and abandoned cats and dogs. Christmas is a time to gather and celebrate with family and friends. Sadly though, it can also be a time of loneliness and isolation for the many homeless dogs and cats waiting patiently in AWLQ shelters. Their hope is to join a family and enjoy a brighter future full of affection. Adopting a pet from a shelter has become increasingly popular as people turn away from backyard breeders and pet shop puppies. “If you have been considering a pet for Christmas, please choose to adopt. Not only will you save a life but you will make room in the shelter for another pet that needs our help,” spokesperson for the AWLQ, Ms Whitney said. Shelter animals come in all shapes and sizes and are all desexed, microchipped and vaccinated. AWLQ has puppies and kittens through to older animals who have the advantage of ‘life-experience’. “Our staff can match you to a pet that will not only suit your lifestyle but will be a constant companion who will offer you lots of love and affection.” The AWLQ Ipswich rehoming centre is located at 6 Hooper Street, West Ipswich, and are open Monday – Friday noon to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sunday and public holidays – closed. You can contact the centre by sending an email to ipswichrehoming@awlqld.com.au or calling 3202 4688.

Monika (left), mum Paula and Simona (right) celebrate MDS’s 20 years of success at the recent awards presentation night. For the owner of local dance school, Monika’s Unlimited Dance Studio (MDS), the last twenty years has been the result of a childhood dream and many long days of hard work and determination. Whilst still in high school, Monika Vuorlahti, along with sister Katrina, choreographed and taught 70 other students the dances for the school musical, giving Monika a taste of what would become her reality just a few short years later. Having always had the dream to open her own dance studio, Monika registered Monika’s Unlimited Dance Studio in December of 1993, with the first classes being held in 1994. Starting with just 20 students, the school quickly grew and by the end of the first year, over 100 students were enjoying dance classes. In 2010, Monika’s sister Simona joined the dance studio as partner and now co-runs MDS, helping take the studio from strength to strength. After operating from multiple locations for many years, Monika and Simona made the decision to find one central location and now operates solely from their very own premises, just a short drive from Greater Springfield. Reflecting on the last 20 years and the success of the studio, Monika noted, “Like any business it didn’t happen over night. It’s taken a lot of long days, long hours and commitment. “Simona and I will continue to grow and develop MDS. We will continue to provide as many opportunities for the students as possible. We take pride in our work and are firm believers of “quality not quantity”. “And a big thank you to our amazing teachers and students and to the parents for driving your children back and forth to classes, rehearsals, performances, competitions. We are very grateful and thank you all very much!”

Camira SS has creative finish to the year

Fifteen students, ranging from grade 4 to grade 7 have recently taken part in the ‘First Lego League’ competition, with one team going on to the nationals event in Sydney this month. The enthusiastic students practice every Tuesday and/or Wednesday afternoon from 3-4pm in the school’s library where there is a special lego table, designed for the purpose of Lego creation and where the students create their Lego Robotic designs. Teacher/librarian, Prue Calabro said the students reasons for becoming involved are varied. “Some of them simply just love lego and technology, others love robots and electronics. For some their interest was piqued by their friends involvement. “No matter their reasons for deciding to join in, they

all love it!” With the theme for this year’s competition being ‘Nature’s Fury’ students were required to design their own robot with the game pieces being sent from America for the competition. Camira State School’s ballet production of Under the Sea premiered for the first time this year to an audience filled with family and friends, as well as the Riverview Gardens nursing home who were all delighted with the performance. The dedicated students involved have spent much of their own time learning and practicing since the beginning of Term 2. It has been a great feat for many who had not danced before to be able to show off their new found talent. All the hard work and effort was definitely worth it.

Members enjoyed the Melbourne Cup Party with the ladies all coming dressed up with their hats on and they looked just as good as the Melbourne Cup Fashions. We had a lovely lunch which was prepared by members and some of the members had a few wins in the sweep. Everyone enjoyed the day. Our guest speaker for November was Susannah Friis from the Greater Springfield Times. Susannah presented a talk on Destiny Rescue and child sexual slavery. She gave a very good talk about what goes on over in Thailand. Also in November was our trip to Warwick. We went to a Rodeo Museum where we enjoyed a lovely morning tea and then a show which was good, although one of the young boys who was riding one of the bulls had a nasty fall. Hopefully he’s made a good recovery. The show itself was interesting as we saw what they had to do before they rode the bulls - it’s not a sport for everyone! We then went on to the RSL for lunch. It was a good day out. We have a busy month for December and I would like to wish all the members a very happy Christmas with all their families and hope its a good 2014 for all.

2013 is coming to an end and I am sure that many of you, like myself, will take some time over the Christmas and New Year period to relax and reflect on the year that was. It has been a very busy year, particularly in the political spectrum and I would again like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting me at the federal election. I do not take this support for granted and I will continue to work for the people of the Western Corridor. It is important to remember to take extra precautions on our roads over the holidays. There are a few simple measures that can be taken to ensure everyone’s safety. It is undoubtable that there will be extra traffic on the roads, so make sure you plan your trip and allow for delays. Always stick to the speed limit, obey the road rules and ensure all of your passengers are wearing their seatbelt. Remember, it is better to get to your destination safe and late, than not at all. My office will close at 5pm on December 20 and will reopen at 9am on January 6. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.

College News with Steve Croft, Head of College The Springfield Anglican College

Term Four is slipping by quickly. Already the College has held the Annual Sports Dinner, Night of Celebration for Years Four to Twelve and a range of celebrations to acknowledge the Year Twelve cohort and their significant contribution to the College over a number of years. The annual Sports Dinner, held at the Logan Entertainment Centre, was packed with over 450 students, parents and staff to acknowledge a range of achievements. This year the TAS Swimming Team won Red Division, and the JTAS Athletics Team also won Red Division. In total 12 premierships were taken out by College teams, with 68 students gaining representative honours, of which 26 were at State level and six at National level. Given there are just over 500 students in Years Four to Twelve this is an outstanding achievement. During Year Twelve’s last week, students who commenced their education on the Primary Campus attended a special Chapel service during which students on the Primary Campus delighted in the occasion and sang with gusto to show their appreciation. 21 Year Twelve students

The following Sunday evening, the Senior Formal was held at The Landing, Kangaroo Point. A delightful evening was well attended by many parents and friends prior to dinner, to celebrate the occasion. The following Tuesday evening at the annual Night of Celebration, a large number of students in Years Four to Twelve received their awards for their academic achievement and the character and leadership exhibited this year. On the last Friday for Year Twelve, the Year Twelve cohort was farewell from the Middle and Senior Campus with students in Years Seven to Eleven forming a guard of honour. All in all a very busy term at the College, however, a very important time as the College community comes together to celebrate the successes and achievements of our students. In coming weeks the Prep to Year Three Night of Celebration will provide a fitting finale to these celebrations, with a Christmas theme to the evening. Mr Steve Croft Head of College

With Christmas just around the corner and the new year nearly upon us, it’s a good time to pause and reflect about the things we hold precious. Most people get caught up in the chaos that we label the “silly season”, and in that busyness it’s all too easy to forget to take time out to remember the truly important things in life. For many, it’s a time to catch up with friends and family to celebrate the year just gone and enjoy the love that connects us to our dear ones. But for others it can be a time of sadness, loneliness, and despair. So reflecting on the really important values of our society and taking some action to bring peace to those who are not so blessed becomes an important part of celebrating the ending of one year and the start of another. Here are a few tips for ways you can show gratitude for the positives in your life: • In your Christmas cards, include a personally written note sharing a specific example of something each person did for you and how it made a difference in your life. • If someone has inspired you to push outside your comfort zone this year, thank them for believing in your capacity to take a risk, and let them know how it paid off. • If you know someone who serves you regularly, acknowledge something they always do well, like staying calm under pressure. • If someone you know is going through a tough time, call them (or better still go to see them) and take a genuine interest in listening to them – giving time and genuine interest in other people’s lives is fast going out of fashion but so important for wellbeing. • For someone you don’t know but who has made your day a little brighter, let their boss know how they’re doing a great job and contributing to the company. • Exhibit patience at least once every day for the next month, even if you’re in a hurry. This helps others around you also remain calm. • And don’t forget to give yourself some gratitude – make a list of all the good things you’ve done for other people and the world in the past year; treat yourself to something you enjoy, like a pedicure or a massage; or acknowledge the things you’ve learned this year, no matter how tiny, and reflect on how these things have changed your life for the better. Last but not least, taking the time to count your blessings every day builds wellbeing, strengthens your physical health, and is a core component for healthy relationships. At the end of every day, think about the three most significant experiences and people that have brought a smile to your day.

Summer is here and the Festive Season just a week or two away. Have you started that Christmas shopping yet or is it going to be a last minute rush for you. Last month, nineteen Goodna/Redbank branch members met at the Salvation Army Welcome Café, Smiths Road, Goodna for their monthly coffee club morning. Everyone was most impressed by the food and service. Guest speaker for the November meeting was Geoff Crane from the Bureau of Meteorology. Weather forecasting is one of those sciences not understood by most people, so Geoff ’s explanation of how weather is tracked by the networks of radar stations across the country was most informative. He also showed a video of the building of the weather station at Redbank and the technology within it. In case you don’t know what I am talking about, it’s that big balloon like structure sitting on top of the hill, some say it looks like a golf ball perched on a stand. The branch meeting on Tuesday 17th December will be followed by the Christmas Lunch at the Springfield Tavern. The branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club with registration and 10.00am start, however we will be taking a summer break from the 17th December until 18th February 2014. Goodna/Springfield

Probus Club Update by Pat van der Beek Best wishes to all readers for a safe and happy festive season from all of us at Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. This is, of course, our last article for this year and there will be no column in January as we do not reconvene until February. This year has certainly had its challenges and pleasures; life does not seem to become less complicated as we grow older as we had been led to believe. Boredom certainly does not have to be a given in our later years, being surrounded by good friends and having regular medical checks means that many people can now live happy and productive lives in retirement and that is certainly true of most Probians. Best wishes again to all for a cheerful festive season and a great 2014. Our Christmas party was held at the end of November and most members were able to attend a wonderful evening full of fun, laughter and reminiscences to round off the year. There will be no outing in December as most members are busy with their own festive preparations. This month’s photo shows a group of us off to lunch at Restaurant 66 at the South Brisbane Institute of Technology where the students provided us with a varied and interesting three course lunch. Lunch outings are popular with our members and will continue to be a feature of many of our events next year. February’s proposed outing will be to Brisbane City Hall for a musical recital.

There was no speaker in December as we held a wine and cheese function after our regular meeting. February’s speaker (tentative) will be from ‘Shelterbox’, an international Rotary Club project. Shelterbox is a disaster relief charity which provides lifesaving supplies to displaced people after natural disasters. We hope you will look out for our regular column again in February 2014. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Vic on the number below for details. Finally don’t forget our drop-in coffee mornings at Robelle Domain, Springfield Parklands, on the third Friday of each month. (This month’s date is 20th December). We would like to issue a cordial invitation to all retired and semi-retired local people to consider joining us. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Interested? Your first step is to ring Vic on 3271 1096 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Councillor’s Comments by Cr Sheila Ireland (Division 9) 3810 6231 or Div9Office@ipswich.qld.gov.au It is hard to believe that the festive season and the end of the year is once again upon us. 2013 has been a busy year in the community with a number of highlights including the Springfield Land Corporation celebrating 21 years since they first started to develop the area. There are already more than 23,000 residents living in the Springfield suburbs and it is forecast that Springfield will one day be the same size as Darwin with the area’s population expected to climb to 86,000 residents when fully developed. The area is set to boom further with the arrival this month of the first trains to Springfield. It will now take less than an hour for people to travel by train from Springfield Central to Brisbane Central. The $475 million investment in the region by Queensland Rail and Translink is extremely welcome and has been much anticipated by residents. It is sure to help draw more residents and investors to the area. There has been much talk in the community recently about Ipswich City Council’s plans for stage two of Robelle Domain Parkland and in particular the community’s interest in a swimming lagoon similar to Southbank. This ever popular parkland is set to grow and expand with $10 million of funding allocated for Stage Two from the Ipswich City Council and Federal Government. However, in stage two, it appears at this stage that no provision has been made for a swimming lagoon as desired by the community. While this would be a wonderful addition to the area, the challenge would be to fund the ongoing operating cost of such a facility. I am aware that considerable research and investigations have been carried out into how to best manage and operate a swimming lagoon to ensure safety of the community users. I am happy to look at how the community’s interest in securing a swimming lagoon in Stage Two could be accommodated through innovative solutions. I am aware of the community’s passionate support and naturally I am more than happy to listen to the community and advocate for your interest. Residents looking for a fun local activity this New Year’s Eve should head to Robelle Domain. The parklands will be the location from 6pm to midnight on December 31 for the Icon Creative Summit. This free event will include food and drink stalls and lots of fun for the entire family. For more information visit facebook.com/IconCreativeSummit. Please stay safe on our roads this festive season and may 2014 bring health and happiness to all.

Please help Red Cross stock up for Christmas

As the festive season fast approaches, Red Cross is appealing for urgent donations of unwanted summer clothing to help stock local Red Cross Shops for Christmas. National Marketing Manager, Jayne-Anne Power says ladies summer clothing is in hot demand, particularly dresses but anything light and in good condition is always appreciated. “The early summer weather in many parts of the country has depleted our stores of summer clothing,” said Jayne-Anne. “Christmas is the busiest time of the year for our Red Cross Shops, so we need more stock in the next few weeks to cater for the many hundreds of people who’ll be coming into our stores during December to buy something special for Christmas and help a great cause at the same time.” The proceeds from shop sales help support people during disasters, provide daily phone calls to check on the wellbeing of isolated or elderly Australians, and prepare nutritious breakfasts for children who need a healthy start to the day. To donate summer clothing simply walk into a Red Cross Shop and hand your items across the counter or place them in the donation box at the entrance to each store. The closest Red Cross shop for Greater Springfield region residents is the Ipswich store, 32 Downs Street, North Ipswich, phone 3202 3176. Opening hours are Monday -Friday 9am - 4.30pm, Saturday 9am - noon. Go to the website www.redcross.org.au for other stores or call 1800 339 888.

EVERY YOUNG PERSON DESERVES A YOUNG LIFE Aged care is no place for any young person. Yet right now, more than 7,500 young Australians with high care needs are living in aged care. 700,000 more are being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support. Why? If you, or a loved one, were to suffer an accident or illness that left you, or them, in need of full-time care, there are currently few alternatives for care and housing available. Youngcare works to change this by building more age appropriate housing; financially assisting through At Home Care Grants; and providing information and advice through the Youngcare Connect hotline. Every young person deserves a young life and you can help create change by visiting www.youngcare.com.au/donate
