Work commences on Robelle Domain Stage Two Chair of Parks, Sport and Recreation and Springfield Councillor David Morrison is excited that Stage Two of Robelle Domain has commenced. Stage Two will include the extension of the footpath from Main Street to Springfield Central Station car park, construction of another car park, toilet block, canteen BBQ areas, pathways and lighting. Cr David Morrison said the big question the community is asking is if there will be a swimming lagoon or a zero depth water play area. “Given the extreme heat we have experienced lately, I have no doubt a lagoon would be very popular, however council must be prudent and compare the construction costs and ongoing operational costs of both. The final decision as to what water play will be included will be a full council discussion and decision,” said Cr Morrison. Apart from Robelle Domain Stage Two, Councillor David Morrison is very excited as to what 2014 holds. Major projects for the Greater Springfield area include the construction of Mater Hospital, duplication of USQ, extension of Orion Springfield Central, construction of GE State headquarters and the opening of Eden Station Drive that will connect Springfield Greenbank Arterial and Augusta Parkway. “I am hoping that the Federal Government will support the Centenary Sports Hub adjacent to Springfield Central Station as a home for the Brisbane Lions. This is currently being re-assessed by the current Federal Government. “We live in a great city and all great cities of the world have great parks, I encourage all families to take time and visit the many parks we have across Ipswich City,” said Cr Morrison.

Personally Speaking

By Susannah Friis with Susannah Friis

routine; noun - a sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program. If you set new years resolutions, chances are you need to make those new things part of your routine. All the usual ones, such as, fitness, better eating, looking after yourself, or working towards finishing a project will require some sort of regular input in order to be accomplished. I don’t know about you, but the word ‘routine’ has a negative ring to it for me. Maybe it’s just my personality which leans more towards spontaneity than structure, and more towards impulse than intentionality, but when I hear the word ‘routine’ I groan inwardly, and sometimes outwardly! When you read the dictionary definition of the word, you’ll see that it’s not negative or remotely off putting at all. It’s merely the act of repeating a behaviour or exercise. See, it’s quite harmless really! Why do I buck against the thing that will actually give my life a sense of order, and help me achieve the things I want to achieve? Upon scrutiny, we see that routine makes up the life of every successful person. Tennis players certainly would know that routine practice makes them progress up the rankings. Musicians will agree that routinely working on their talent will increase their skill. And we all know that life runs far more smoothly if our kids have a good routine for before and after school! So why do so many of us (yes, I am assuming I’m not alone in this!) have a problem with keeping on doing the same thing day after day? Sometimes, I think it’s lack of results. If we’re trying to get fit, it can be hard to gauge our progress each day. If we’re trying to write a book, the slow incremental increase of that word count can seem non existent most days. If we’re adding activities into our day that will increase our mental health and well being, it’s hard to see those changes on a daily basis. Day by day, it can feel like skipping the gym ‘just this one day’ won’t make a big difference; and that not writing those 300 words ‘just this one day’ won’t effect the final tally when you submit the manuscript to an editor; or being too busy for that one hour of meditation ‘just this one day’ won’t really effect our overall demeanour for the day. The truth is though, the reason routines work and make a difference in our lives, is because their effects are accumulative. You may remember an ad that used to be on TV, I can’t remember what for (clearly didn’t work too well then, did it!) but the catch phrase was, ‘it won’t happen overnight... but it will happen!’ If we try to remain focussed on the end goal and not on the single steps we take each day, before we know it, we’ll be where we want to be and our goal will be our reality.

As we look to the New Year to make our weight loss resolutions for 2014, what better time to also focus on our pet’s weight loss goals for 2014. Whilst there are some diseases that can lead to obesity in our furry friends, more commonly over feeding and/or too little exercise is the culprit. Extra weight being carried by the body puts extra strain and pressure on the joints. This means these joints will wear and tear at a faster rate, and most likely go on to develop osteoarthritis, or be at higher risk of muscle, tendon or ligament tears or strains. Large breed dogs, especially once middle aged or older, are especially high risk for osteoarthritis in the hips and elbows. Once a pet is overweight and joint disease has set in, exercising becomes very hard, and the pet is trapped in a vicious cycle where they are unable to lose the weight through exercise. Although dogs don’t appear to suffer from hardening of the arteries like people, they can develop many other forms of heart disease. Additional weight increases the heart’s workload, making heart problems worse. Excess fat around the head and neck regions can also make breathing more difficult. This is seen most commonly in our ‘short faced’ breeds such as Pugs, Pekinese, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Boxers, and cat breeds such as Persians. On humid days, overweight, short-nosed dogs and cats are much more prone to heat stress. Feeding your pet excessively or inappropriate foods can stress the pancreas and contribute to both pancreatitis and diabetes. These two conditions are both serious and potentially life threatening and much more common in overweight dogs. Overweight cats are also at higher risk of developing diabetes. Clinical signs might include increased drinking and urination, an increased appetite despite losing weight or vomiting and lethargy. So how do you know if your furry friend is overweight? When you run your hands over the chest, you should be able to feel the individual ribs comfortably, and actually see the last couple in short haired breeds. Your pet should have a visible waist and be tucked-up under the belly. Cats will normally ‘hide’ their excess fat in their fat pads on their bellies – the feline version to the ‘beer gut’. Any weight loss program should be gradual, based on reduced calorie intake, increased exercise, and regular weigh-ins. Your vet or nutritional nurse can tailor a program especially for your pet. There are some excellent balanced dietary foods now available, which ensure that calorie intake is restricted without restriction of nutrients such as essential vitamins and minerals. It is vital that the whole family takes part in your pets diet as any extra snacks or treats from one family member will quickly undo all the good work. It might seem hard at first, but as your overweight pet loses weight, you will see a fitter, healthier pet. You can be confident that you pet will have a longer, happier life.

Things are looking UP for the Springfield Christian Family (SCF) annual Talent Quest events held at Robelle Domain Parklands, for 2014. SCF have recently rebranded their talent quests giving them continuity over all four events during 2014. The overall new event name will be Springfield’s “Festivals of Colour”, with each event featuring a different talent search: Sing UP (formerly Make No Idol), Dance UP (formerly Dance for the Star), Jam UP (formerly Battle of the Bands), and Tune UP (formerly Instrumental Music Quest). Our first event in 2014 will be the Festival of Colour Sing UP, and we would love the community to get involved. Sing UP will be held from 3pm – 8pm, on Sunday 23rd February at The Circle, Robelle Domain Parklands, Education City Drive, Springfield Central. The talent quest events are community celebrations, charity fundraisers, and great opportunities for people of all ages from the community to share their United Purpose with the Greater Springfield area. Hence the UP (united performers) in the areas of singing (Sing UP: February 23), dancing (Dance UP: April 6), bands (Jam UP: September 21), and instrumental (Tune UP: November 2). “Our talent quests have been gaining a lot of momentum over the past year, with the recent inclusion of the Festival of Colour (formerly Lanterns in the Park), with the partnership with local market holders, including food stalls, entertainment, rides, and a spectacular fireworks display providing an even greater experience for the community to enjoy,” said Pastor Phil Cutcliffe. “Our final event for 2013 attracted well over 10,000 people across the day. “We would really love community and business support for our events in 2014. Your kind investment would not only help us host a great event for the community, but also help us raise necessary funds to support USQ University Chaplaincy.” Organisers would love to hear from prospective entrants, volunteers, and sponsors. Interested residents can send an email to phil@springfieldchristianfamily.org.au or call him on 0411 021 153. Alternatively, contact Event Coordinator, Becky on 0430 515 714.

College News with Steve Croft, Head of College The Springfield Anglican College

Welcome to the 2014 school year. At The Springfield Anglican College the new school year is shaping up as an exciting year in the life of the College. The 2013 Year Twelve cohort are to be congratulated for achieving some very strong OP results, and importantly results that enabled them to gain access to their university course of preference. Overall, 29% of these students scored in the OP 1-5 band, 63% in the OP 1-10 band and 83% between OP 1-15. In each band these results sit well above State percentages and compare very well with schools across Queensland. While the College is not academically selective, such results validate the strong emphasis placed on academic achievement at the College. Across Years Seven to Twelve the College will be introducing, from the commencement of Term One, the newly developed ‘TSAC Positive Education Model’. Our passionate belief in student and staff wellbeing, coupled with the clear linkage between positive emotions and

Page 6 - February 2014 - The Greater Springfield Times

academic success all argue that the skills of wellbeing should be taught in College. The programme aims to assist all students, in particular, with the development of their emotional intelligence and resilience. In Term Two, the College will commence the next stage of the planned building programme on the Middle and Senior Campus; a significant build that will in many ways transform the Campus. The construction of a Creative Arts Precinct, Year Seven and Chinese classroom block and change facilities for PE and Sport, are planned to be operational for the commencement of the 2015 school year. In 2015, the College will be adding a third stream of Year Seven. The College has a set upper limit to the numbers of students able to enrol. This is set at 1,000 students, approximately 500 students on each of the College’s two campuses. The addition of the third stream of Year Seven will mean the Middle and Senior Campus will be close to capacity in 2015. For prospective parents this will mean the main entrance point into the College will become Kindergarten from 2016 onwards. Mr Steve Croft Head of College

Amongst the new pencil cases, exercise books and erasers, Cancer Council Queensland is urging parents to stock up on SunSmart essentials as a back-to-school priority. Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and supplies that will protect children from the damaging effects of the sun should be back-toschool essentials. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said parents are being urged to stock up on SunSmart supplies to reduce their child’s risk of developing deadly skin cancer later in life. “New shoes, lunchboxes and books have become back-toschool musts, with sunscreen and SunSmart supplies often falling by the wayside,” Ms Clift said. “Our State has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world – sun protection needs to be a priority every time we walk out the door. “We know that most sun exposure occurs in childhood years and that this exposure contributes significantly to the risk of developing cancer later in life. “The good news is that skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancers – we can reduce our worrying skin cancer trends by taking a few simple precautions and practicing SunSmart behaviour.” In Queensland, around 136,000 new skin cancer cases are diagnosed each year (3000 melanoma and 133,000 nonmelanoma skin cancers). In Brisbane alone, around 1096 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year. Ms Clift said the start of a new school year provided the perfect opportunity to challenge kids and young adults to think of new ways to make their daily school routines more SunSmart. “Make being SunSmart a healthy habit, just like eating breakfast!” Ms Clift said. “For best protection, you need to combine the five recommended behaviours: Slip on sun protective clothing, Slop on SPF 30 or above water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on wrap-around sunnies.” For more information on reducing your skin cancer risk or Cancer Council Queensland, visit www.cancerqld.org.au or call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20.

Have you considered fostering a child?

“You will never do anything more important than provide care for a child who can’t live in their own home,” says foster carer Andrew. “We believe that the one vital factor foster carers give children is hope; no one can really live without hope.” Andrew and wife Simone are two of the highly-valued foster carers supervised by Mercy Family Services (MFS). MFS cares for children in the Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and Toowoomba areas who are unable to stay at home because of their protective needs, through their Foster and Kinship Care and Intensive Foster Care programs. Foster carers like Andrew and Simone are people living in the community who have the capacity to care for children and who, after a period of training and assessment, have been approved as suitable carers. Kinship carers are people from within the child’s own family or community who assume the responsibility of caring for children. Foster and kinship carers provide safe and caring homes for children and young people from birth to 18 years of age, for short or long periods of time. Intensive foster care provides additional resources to foster carers looking after children with particularly challenging behaviours, such as supplementary payments, respite care and extra services to assist the child. “In all our out-of-home care programs, we strive to respond to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, their families and communities, as well as families and communities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” says MFS Manager Shenade Sawyer, who manages the Brisbane North and South Foster and Kinship Care programs. “Children and young people need foster care for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it’s because a parent is unwell or they have limited personal resources or support around them,” Ms Sawyer says. “Or it could be because of poverty, homelessness or serious abuse and neglect. Poor housing, unemployment, ill-health, social isolation and disability can all contribute to a child or young person entering foster care,” she adds. The aim of foster care is to reunite children with their families. “We recognise that the best place for a child to be, if it’s safe, is in the care of their family. Unfortunately this is not always possible,” Ms Sawyer says. Mercy Family Services are reaching out to the community to find a diverse range of foster carers throughout the Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and Toowoomba areas. “Our greatest need is for foster carers willing to care for children and young people aged between seven and eighteen years and/or sibling groups,” Ms Sawyer says. “Children and young people in foster care are just like other children, except they are likely to have experienced abuse and harm and, as a result, are often traumatised. They need patient and caring adults who can offer them support and understanding. “As a foster carer, you can provide respite, emergency, short or long-term care. Whatever you choose to do, your commitment will be highly valued,” she says. If you’re interested in finding out more about what makes good a foster carer, or to get an information pack, please call Mercy Family Services on 3340 5600 or visit www.mercyfamilyservices.org.au/fostercaring now.

Springfield based Councillor David Morrison congratulates Mirvac on their commitment to the Greater Springfield Area. Mirvac recently announced they have finalised negotiations with Event Cinemas, Target and Coles to join Orion in late 2015. Events Cinema Complex will become the largest in the region with nine screens including two Gold Class and two VMax screens with approximately 2000 seats available. Coles will establish a full line store format and Target will create one of their largest new format stores. Cr David Morrison said that many residents have told him the only reason they leave the Greater Springfield area is to go to the movies. By the end of 2015, people can stay in the Greater Springfield area and enjoy latest releases on the big screen with free parking. Almost 80 additional speciality stores will be included in the next stage of Orion Springfield Central along with over 1000 additional car parks. Cr David morrison also said that Mirvac is unique as a developer as they own the land, design in-house and construct themselves. “I have no doubt whatsoever that Orion Springfield Central will continue to be a destination that will attract many for the great shopping experience,” said Cr Morrison.

Library fun comes to Camira Families with children aged up to five in the Camira area will be treated to the experience of active library programs and activities in their own backyard during February, with the Pop-up Library Fun for Little Ones visiting on two separate occasions during February. The program, aimed at children from birth to five-years-old, will be held from 9am to noon on both February 13 and 27 at The Camira Springfield Community Centre on 389 Old Logan Rd, Camira. “There will be different free activities provided each week including songs, rhymes, stories and activities,” said Cr Pahlke, Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson. Families will meet well-known book characters and enjoy the library’s collections supporting early literacy development including musical instruments and Duplo. There will also be free books and other resources to collect. Cr Pahlke said council had received grant funding from the Australian Government and Queensland Government under the Australian Early Development Index (AEDI) program. “We have taken a number of our popular library programs and incorporated them into this special literacy program which we are now taking to various targeted locations around Ipswich. This program is specifically aimed at members of the community who may not currently be library users. We want to give them a taste of the various family and early literacy programs regularly on offer through Ipswich Libraries.” A representative from The Smith Family’s Let’s Read program, Michelle Trevino, also will be coming along to one session to provide parents with valuable information on the benefits of reading to children from an early age. Let’s Read is a federally funded program implemented by The Smith Family to promote reading from birth. “Ms Trevino will be handing out a special Let’s Read bag to those attending which will include a book and other merchandise.” Cr Pahlke said along with children and their parents, grandparents and carers were also welcome to attend and morning tea would be provided at each session. “This is a great opportunity for families to discover and enjoy some of the free programs and activities that the library has to offer the local community.” Bookings can be made online at www.ipswich.library.qld.gov.au/events/ or by calling Ipswich Central Library on 3810 6815.

Hi all and welcome to the first column of 2014 for the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. With the festive season now well behind us, it’s time to crank up for the New Year and look forward to the many activities and interesting guest speakers we have lined up for 2014. Our first meeting for the year was held on February 5 but, as there was no January column, it was not possible to welcome potential members that time. However, we will continue to meet on the first Wednesday of the month so next month’s meeting will be on March 5. This gathering will be our AGM as well as a regular monthly meeting so there will be no guest speaker. However, as always, interested parties are welcome to attend. In January, a small group of us attended the ‘Treasures of Afghanistan’ exhibition at the Queensland Museum, a magnificent display of art and culture which was almost lost forever with the Soviet invasion of 1979 and the Taliban attacks of 1996. The museum’s curators were able to hide some of the treasures which are now travelling the world in this fascinating exhibition. Small ‘special interest’ groups within our club are encouraged, as members often have a diversity of interests. February’s outing was a cool and pleasant pub lunch. We hope you will become regular readers of our column again in 2014. All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Vic on the number below for details. Finally don’t forget our drop-in coffee mornings at Robelle Domain, Springfield Parklands, on the third Friday of each month. (This month’s date is 21st February). We would like to issue a cordial invitation to all retired and semi-retired local people to consider joining us. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Interested? Your first step is to ring Vic on 3271 1096 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Happy New Year everyone. It’s good to be back and to see so many members. Hoping it’s a wonderful and healthy year for everyone. Our first meeting of this year was held on Wednesday 22nd January. It was a good meeting as we had plenty to talk about after the break. Our next meeting was on 29th of January as we celebrated Australia Day with a sausage sizzle and some Aussie games. A great day was had by all. I am sure we are going to have another wonderful year at the club with outings, Cafe Nights, and not to forget Christmas in July. Our first outing for the year is to Brisbane Airport that is on Feb 26th. See you there.

Golden Moon Festival set to rise again The Golden Moon Festival is set to rise again on Saturday February 15th at Forest Lake Parklands from 4:30pm. After the success of last year’s show, the organisers are working hard to ensure that the Golden Moon Festival heralds a positive start to 2014. The Golden Moon Festival aims to bring everyone together, awakening a communal and inner happiness. This year, Food for Life, the organisers, have secured an international musical sensation straight from the UK. Jayadev John Richardson has captured audiences in over 15 countries with his soulful mantra choir. Engaging every single person in the audience, Jayadev gives each section a counterpoint of one of his beautiful, self-penned songs to sing – the result is a group of total musical novices singing like a professional chorus in minutes! “He’s guaranteed to get everyone in the audience singing their hearts out,” says Sakhi Rai Das, after Photo courtesy of Charu Mukhi Dasi witnessing Jayadev’s performance in Brisbane two years ago. In addition, the Golden Moon Festival will include traditional dances, drum performances, a yoga demonstration and martial arts exhibition within their stage program. The surrounding stalls will have activities to keep children and adults entertained. “The fashion stall was an incredible hit last year, and the lines at the food stall were never shorter than a few people!” said organizer Mcklein Javeri. The fashion and food stalls will be open from 4.30pm whilst a free martial arts and dance class for children takes place on the main lawn. These stalls will continue to stay open as the stage program commences from 5.30pm. For more information on the festival, please visit www.goldenmoonfestival.com or call Niti Sheth on 0432 439 144 for more information.

The Dragons AFL football team are raring to kick goals for the 2014 season. The club has set their sights on doubling the number of teams fielded this year and hope to have a team of under 6 players (a first for the club), two under 8 teams, a under 9s and 10s. “We want people to know we are still here, still teaching kids how to play footy,” said club president, Annette Densham. “We offer a wonderful family environment – as a small club, our volunteers know the names of each kid. We take the time to get to know the families of the children who play with us.” The club will be holding a come and try day at CJ Greenfields on Saturday 1 March from 10am to 11am. Newcomers will be introduced to the basics of footy – how to hand ball, kick and mark the ball, while parents will be able to ask questions and find out more about the club. “An existing aspect of the 2014 season for us will be running our canteen out of an actual building,” said Annette. “We received a Gambling Community Benefit grant three years ago and despite many challenges, have finally finished construction of the building. The canteen is an important part of our fundraising so having a professional set up is wonderful.” The AFL season starts in April and runs through to September. Teams play every Saturday at home and around the western suburbs – from Park Ridge to Ipswich to Taringa. The cost to play for the season is $125 for all age groups with a 10% discount for two or more children. For more information, please contact Annette on 0478 718 041.

Coaching For Life

with Dr Kate Lemerle PhD MAPS Dr Kate Lemerle has over 25 years experience in the health industry and is a Coaching Psychologist with Chrysalis Wellness Services

For many, the resolutions made with such commitment and enthusiasm at the start of the year are fading and old habits have returned. As Life Coaches, we typically find February to be the month when there’s a lot of re-thinking as to why we made those resolutions, which may now be considered ridiculously optimistic. However, before you give up on those commitments altogether, take a few minutes to pause in your day and review why dedicating yourself to making significant life changes is so important. People commit to change for two main reasons – we want to be happier, and we want our lives to be meaningful. Being happy, and having a sense of purpose and meaning, are universal human drivers – regardless of where or when you’re born, every one of us strives to be happy and find some meaning in the things we do and the experiences we have. Nature has hard-wired us for happiness for a number of reasons that are becoming increasingly evident as the sophistication and depth of our understanding of the brain grows. Happiness is essential for survival - the immune cells of people who report being happy are stronger than those who are not, but surprisingly the immune cells of those who report leading meaningful lives are even stronger than those who are happy but without clear life purpose. Research has uncovered other differences between happiness and meaning. Happy people are significantly more aware of and engaged in the present moment, whereas people with a strong sense of meaning more frequently look for links between past, present, and future. People derive meaningfulness (but not necessarily happiness) from helping others, being a giver, whereas people derive happiness (but not necessarily meaningfulness) from being a taker. So science is now giving us some good pointers about how to achieve lasting happiness, and build purpose and meaning into our lives. It is well established that empathy, compassion, and happiness are skills that can be cultivated through deliberate decisions and actions, not just fleeting emotions. For example, one study that examined data of more than 200,000 people from 136 countries found that donating to charity in the past month boosts happiness “in most individual countries and all major regions of the world,” cutting across cultures and levels of economic well-being, and not even altered by levels of affluence or poverty. Humans feel good when they give to others. Other studies have conclusively shown that the daily practice of mindfulness - the moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings - improves our individual health and also makes us more compassionate toward others. In addition, people who practice mindfulness, even if only for a few minutes every day, show noticeable changes in brain activity, including in networks linked to emotional awareness. And emotional awareness – that is, understanding and valuing our own feelings as well as those of the people around us – is one of the most powerful protective factors against many mental health problems such as depression. The take-home message is that striving to achieve goals that have personal meaning for you inevitably helps you stay healthy, but also boosts happiness, and this can be enhanced by giving to others in simple ways such as encouraging a friend to also stay on track, which then comes back to you with improved motivation.

After celebrating 25 years of service to the community last year, the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane enters 2014 with new direction. Under the guidance of Anita Lennox and her team, the club will be looking to continue supporting charities locally, nationally and internationally, and to continue with our support, the Board will be giving a priority throughout the year to increasing the club membership. In 2013, the club members raised about $45,000 supporting the needs of charities within our communities. There is an ever increasing requirement for assistance from service clubs such as Kiwanis and to maintain our support, the club must continue to increase its membership base. The club started the New Year with three new members, who were inducted last month by the President, pictured from left Anita Lennox, Reianna Vercoe, David Read and Kathy Dunne, whose first commitment to the community was helping out at the Kiwanis BBQ for the Salvation Army Christmas Carols at Peter Lightfoot Oval, Middle Park.

A message from the Mayor’s Desk BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE School recently started back and I would like to remind all parents and motorists to please stick to the 40km/h speed limit around school zones. Children can be very unpredictable and are not the best judges of speed and distance so please also be vigilant around schools and keep an eye out for children walking, riding and being dropped off. If everyone follows the rules around schools, it makes it safe for all children. I would like to thank everyone who came along to enjoy the children’s exhibition Construction Site at the Ipswich Art Gallery over the school holidays. We had more than 25,000 people walk through the gallery doors, which is a tremendous achievement. The Gallery exhibition Built for Speed held at Orion Town Centre had a further 5000 participants, so thank you to everyone for supporting Queensland’s most popular regional gallery. The Ipswich Art Gallery has recently launched a new look website with an easy online booking system for upcoming events, including school holiday activities so be sure to check it out by logging on to: www.ipswichartgallery.qld.gov.au.

Rotary Club of Greater Springfield Update Aiming to change lives with vision of expansion

by Chris Steinback

After the challenge of its first year in operation, the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield, though a provisional club, is keen to engage others through its effort and commitment to provide service above self to change lives and provide a better place for our local community. The club commences 2014 with a determination to succeed and engage Rotary by utilising its talent, skill, experience and enthusiasm to add value to the lives of others in the local and international community. The members of the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield are very excited to celebrate the official chartering of the club by Rotary International on 12 April 2014 at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club. To do so, the new club needs a minimum number of 25 members in order to join the Rotary family. Currently, the club has 20 members so has approximately three months to encourage local citizens to join our passionate team prior to charter. We need local people young and old, male and female, to join this wonderful organisation of like minded people driven by passion and united by a common vision to make the world a better place. Together we can achieve more with an attitude of service to apply to whatever we strive to achieve. Maybe you have never thought about Rotary, maybe you have never been asked. Maybe you could potentially be one of tomorrow’s Rotarians joining with like minded people to make a difference to our local and the international community. Just give us a call and come along to a meeting. You will be most welcome. Rotary needs strong clubs focused on serving their local and international community with significant projects, clubs which promote Rotary and publicize action-orientated service, clubs which plan with determination to change the world for a better place and, finally, clubs that are prepared to accept change and challenge their own comfort zones. This is the vision the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield hopes to achieve. Rotary is 108 years old and open to people of all cultures and ethnicities in almost all countries of the world. Rotary recognises that in order to be around for another 108 years, it will be required to accept change and embrace and capitalise on change for the benefit of a successful organisation going forward. The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield (prov) holds its meetings every Thursday evening at 6.30pm at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club, 1 Tournament Drive Brookwater. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Lachlan Clarke on 0409 711 199, visit us on Facebook or send an email to greaterspringfieldrotary@hotmail.com.

Goodna/Redbank Branch by Vera

Somerwil, Branch President

It didn’t take long to reach February and the heat that goes with it. It is also time for the branch to begin its meetings and activities. As mentioned in the last edition of the Greater Springfield Times, the branch has invited author Ryll Paul to come along to talk about her book, Pebbles on the Road, for the first meeting to be held on Tuesday February 18. Perhaps this might inspire you to write up your own journey through life. On March 5, members are invited to attend the Coffee Club morning with Brian at the Industry Café, Redbank. This café proved to be a popular venue for branch members last year. An explorer trip has been arranged for Tuesday March 11, starting with travelling by train to Central and a tour of the restored Brisbane City Hall at 10.30am. A speaker for the March meeting will be a physiotherapist from the Ipswich Physiotherapy Centre. A visit to the Beenleigh Historical Village Museum has been arranged for Tuesday March 25. The full cost will be $28.00 which includes morning tea and lunch and entrance fees. Bookings can be made with John for this trip. Branch meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna, 9.30am for a 10.00am start. For further information about Branch meetings and activities please contact the Secretary Val on 3297 5735.

EVERY YOUNG PERSON DESERVES A YOUNG LIFE Aged care is no place for any young person. Yet right now, more than 7,500 young Australians with high care needs are living in aged care. 700,000 more are being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support. Why? If you, or a loved one, were to suffer an accident or illness that left you, or them, in need of full-time care, there are currently few alternatives for care and housing available. Youngcare works to change this by building more age appropriate housing; financially assisting through At Home Care Grants; and providing information and advice through the Youngcare Connect hotline. Every young person deserves a young life and you can help create change by visiting www.youngcare.com.au/donate
