Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis
With four community publications, we are all about community here at Local News Publications. We love nothing more than hearing that new groups have started up from seeds planted by articles in our publications, as has happened recently. We hear feedback that memberships at service groups and social clubs are increasing, and we couldn’t be happier. Without active communities, and thereby, active community participants, we would all be poorer in spirit and miss out on so many wonderful connections. Being part of a community group is a win-win situation. You enjoy outings, new friendships and the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a group. Others benefit by your friendship and input and, in most cases, the world community benefits by fundraising efforts and the raising of awareness of so many ways we can help our fellow man. I have been invited to quite a lot of clubs and groups to talk about the work of Destiny Rescue and our trip to Thailand, and I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and getting to know many residents. One thing I notice is that often people in these groups are members of multiple groups, and I see familiar faces everywhere I go. People who have a heart to help their fellow man are often so generous with their time and energy that they participate in two or even three clubs. Far from seeing it as burden or something they ‘should’ do, these people are committed and dedicated to seeing change, locally and globally. I am constantly encouraged, not only by people’s response to what I share, but by the generosity, both financially and in the warm welcome I receive, and the willingness to hear the cold hard facts about issues that are going on around the world. People who are in these clubs and groups are people who are willing to face the injustices and, often evil, actions of others, head on. They are people who firmly, and rightly, believe that a difference is a difference, no matter the size. And the fact is, we can all make a difference. Maybe you’ll make a difference to a friend in a club who is dealing with loss, or hardship. Maybe you’ll relieve a burden from another by putting your hand up to be on the committee. Maybe you’ll make a difference by offering to drive someone to and fro from activities and outings. Maybe you’ll be on the stall to raise funds for fresh drinking water in Africa. Or buy some jewellery that a Destiny Rescue girl made. Or donate some towels for Giving with Love. It all makes a difference. But you have to be where the action is. Why not think about joining a service group? Or start a special interest group yourself. It could be just the thing someone else is looking for.

One of the new major roads to be constructed locally is under detailed design. The road will be a vital connection between Augusta Parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial. Cr David Morrison said the road will be well used by residents coming from Redbank Plains, Bellbird park, Brookwater and Augustine Heights when travelling to Springfield Central Rail Station as well as residents coming from Camira, Springfield and Springfield Lakes accessing Augusta Parkway. The road will initially be two lanes with the potential for four with the intersections at Augusta parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial being constructed to potential from the start. Cyclist will appreciate a dedicated bikeway is being incorporated into the design. Motorists will also be pleased to know the connection under the Centenary Highway from Orion Town Centre to Springfield Central Station is fast becoming a reality. As residents drive out of Orion via North Star Drive they can now visually see one way they will be able to travel to Springfield Central Station.

College News with Steve Croft, Head of College The Springfield Anglican College
Semester One was a very active and successful time for the students at The Springfield Anglican College. Across the spectrum of the College’s holistic approach to education, students have made good progress and achieved significant success. It was also pleasing to read in the Weekend Australian on June 1-2, that the College ranked 41st in the top 100 Queensland Secondary Schools based on Years 7 and 9 NAPLAN results. While the College holds the view that NAPLAN test data needs to be kept in context; such data provides one piece of information regarding student progress. In saying that, the data does provide valuable information to students, parents and schools and provides a basis for comparison between schools. As a College, which is not academically selective, such results provide a great endorsement for the high standards of teaching and learning that are occurring across the College and the direction of the College’s academic programme.
Page 6 - July 2013 - The Greater Springfield Times
During the Semester, the TAS Swimming Team won their division of TAS, the TAS Cross Country Team came third and the College took out seven TAS premierships. In Junior TAS, the Cross Country Team came second, with a number of teams going through their seasons undefeated. At the Ipswich Eisteddfod, the JFH Dance Troupe placed first, the Reflection Dance Troupe placed third, and the Contemporary Dance Troupe and the Adagio Dance Troupe received a Highly Commended. The Boys Team recieved a Special Mention. Six students were accepted into the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University State Honours Ensemble Programme 2013, which is an outstanding achievement. In addition, students gained a great deal from involvement in activities including Toastmasters, Debating, the College Outdoor Education Programme, a range of clubs on offer each week and the personal growth, development and leadership opportunities guided by the College’s valued and well entrenched Pastoral Care Programme. To find out more about a TSAC education or to arrange a tour of our Kindergarten, Primary or Middle & Senior Campuses, contact the College Registrar, on 07 3818 5708. Mr Steve Croft Head of College
New local psycho-educational BE THERE WHEN testing services available YOU’RE Parents and schools in Brisbane’s western corridor now have access to specialised educational and behavioural testing services with the recent partnership between Chrysalis Wellness Services and psychologist Catherine McDonagh. Initially Catherine will be available to provide psychometric assessments and educational or vocational counselling by appointment on Saturdays, with the services set to expand over the next year. Catherine is the principal psychologist of PsychEd Services and Training and has worked in Queensland schools and the health sector for over 15 years. As an Educational and Developmental Psychologist, Catherine has specialist skills in assessing children, adolescents and adults’ capacity to learn and develop life skills, and treating people of all ages who face challenges in their educational life. Psycho-educational assessments can be useful to find out why your child is not achieving to his or her potential, the causes of sudden changes in your child’s grades and school achievement, reasons for problems such as poor concentration or difficult behaviour, and whether your teenager’s development is “normal” or whether his or her behaviour might indicate serious developmental problems. Testing can also help adults with literacy and numeracy problems that might be holding them back in vocational choices. With proper diagnosis, treatment programs can be tailored to overcome some of these problems and open up many new possibilities. Typically the parents attend an initial consultation during which the psychologist collects the child’s developmental history, and might meet the child or teenager to find out more about their experiences of the problems. Assessments are structured sessions that usually take one to two hours on a one-on-one basis with the psychologist. For younger children, these sessions are usually shorter. At the third session, the psychologist explains the results and might recommend a treatment plan that could include brief or longer term counselling sessions to address the main target problem or concern. Parents can self-refer to the service and referrals will also be accepted from schools requiring psycho-educational assessments to help plan focused educational interventions for children with special needs. Enquiries or further information is available by calling Chrysalis Wellness Services on 3818 2639.

New Rotary club achieves first success by Chris Steinback
The members of the new provisional Rotary Club of Greater Springfield had challenged themselves last month to raise the funds to purchase a Shelterbox for AUD$1,000. This was the new clubs first community service project after just two months of operation. The funds were raised when the club conducted their first fundraiser dinner, attended by 50 members, friends and guests at the Brookwater Golf Club. Many thanks to Brookwater Golf Club for providing the facility for free and to the many local firms and businesses who donated raffle prizes for the successful fundraiser. What’s a ShelterBox you say? A ShelterBox supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and essential equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless due to natural disaster. Only new equipment is used and is carefully selected for durability, practicality and suitability for where it is needed whether it be Haiti, Somalia, Syria or locally in Bundaberg or Tasmania. Tough, lightweight and waterproof, the box itself can also have many useful functions from food container to cot. The donation required to sponsor a box includes all materials, packing, storage and distribution to individual recipients worldwide. ShelterBox is an international Rotary managed disaster relief charity that provides shelter, warmth and dignity to those who have been affected by disasters worldwide. Rotary delivers boxes of aid, each of which provides an extended family with quality survival equipment and shelter to use while they rebuild their homes. Rotary ShelterBox response teams accompany the boxes into the disaster zones to ensure efficient delivery to those in need of assistance. The ShelterBox goal is to help 50,000 families every year. Since 2000, the Rotary project has sent out more than 127,700 boxes. The Provisional Rotary Club of Greater Springfield, which held its first meeting in June, is seeking to build its membership prior to charter in order to make a contribution to the local community and to communities throughout the world through the likes of the ShelterBox Disaster Relief and many other international programs and service opportunities. The Provisional Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Wednesday evening at 6.30pm at Springfield Lakes Community Centre Room 1. For enquiries, contact Club Secretary Eva Lewis on 0408 528 085, visit us on Facebook or email us on greaterspringfieldrotary@hotmail.com. The Greater Springfield Times - July 2013 - Page 9

Get your entry into the Poetry Feast Jazz - Tap - Ballet Contemporary - Acrobatics Hip Hop - Mummy & Me Pre-School Dance Musical Theatre - Assessments Eisteddfod & Fun Classes Cr David Pahlke with Allan Goode and Matt Foley. Although time is running out to get your entry into this years Ipswich Poetry Feast competition, interested residents have until July 26 to submit what could be a winning poem. The international poetry writing competition has proven popular since it was first launched and over the past 11 years the Ipswich Poetry Feast has gone from strength to strength and inspired some fantastic poets from all across Australia and overseas. The Ipswich Poetry Feast was created after Ipswich author Judith Baker revealed the town’s local connection to literary legend Henry Lawson in 1999. In 1891, Lawson was so captivated by the sad but true tale of young sisters Bridget Kate and Mary Jane Broderick who drowned in a waterhole at Walloon, that he immortalised them in his poem The Babies of Walloon. This year’s competition offers a total prize value of more than $7800 and is open to anyone from the age of five years. “We are expecting more 1000 entries from people of all ages and backgrounds,” said Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson and Ipswich Poetry Feast Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke. “In previous years we have received entries from every state and territory in Australia and often from overseas as well. “It has been wonderful to witness the depth of talent out there and we are again looking forward to receiving some exceptional entries in 2013. “We encourage anyone with an interest to give it a go and submit an entry.” The names of winners in each of each of the categories will be announced at a special awards evening on October 18. First prize winning poems, or an excerpt of these poems, will be professionally read, and prizes presented (where possible) at this event. Prizes will be mailed if the winner is unable to attend in person. Entry for the Ipswich Poetry Feast competition is free in all categories under 18 years of age, however, a $5 fee per entry applies to anyone entering the open age categories. Further information about the poetry writing competition, including competition guidelines, is available by visiting the Ipswich Poetry Feast website at www.ipswichpoetryfeast.com.au or from Ipswich Libraries on 3810 6755.

I would like to begin this month with a sincere thank you to Gwen Wise, our Club Vice President, who kindly took over the writing of this column for May and June while my husband and I enjoyed a long-planned overseas holiday. Gwen and her husband Vic proved what wonderful friends they are by also greatly assisting, during our absence, a family member who is reliant on us. Heartfelt thanks from us both. Are you enjoying the cooler mornings? It’s a great time of the year to do those garden chores that seem so uninviting when the weather is hot and steamy. Now the equinox has passed, the days will soon lengthen and we will be able to pack more in to every twenty-four hours. The picture above was taken at Robelle Domain, Springfield after a recent breakfast cook-up. Despite the cool weather, it is obvious that all who attended enjoyed the outing...and the girls won! By the time of publication, July’s outing to Boonah Bowls Club for ‘Christmas in July’ will be over. We attended this event last year and agreed that it was definitely worth a return visit. Our outing for August will be to the new Tennis Centre at Tennyson where we will enjoy morning tea and participate in a one hour tour of the Centre. Afterwards we are off to Yeronga RSL for lunch. Our July speaker was Terry Sotherton from Proud Mary Cruises who spoke on how to enjoy a holiday with a difference on the beautiful Murray River. It seems that the leisurely atmosphere on a cruising holiday often leads to strong and lasting friendships. Our speaker for August will be Club Secretary Vic Wise on ‘The Cold War and My Part in It’; it is always interesting when one of our members is willing to share their experiences; at 60+, we all have a lifetime of memories to share. Other exciting Guest Speakers will address us on a range of topics later in the year. We would like to issue a cordial invitation to all retired and semi-retired local people to consider joining us. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Meetings start membership of our friendly group in 2013. Interested? Your first step is to ring Gaye on 3818 8765 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.
Immunisation program for local residents Protecting yourself and your family has never been easier for local residents with upcoming free immunisation clinics held by Ipswich City Council to protect families from serious and preventable disease. Health and Community Safety Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said immunisation is a vital part of protecting your family’s health. “As a result of a $288,000 investment in immunisation health programs, Council will continue to offer free immunisation clinics every week to all Ipswich residents,” Cr Antoniolli said. “Ipswich City Council supports free immunisation clinics because immunisation works and is critical for all our health.” In addition, immunisation will be rolled out across high schools every year as part of the National Immunisation Program and catch up immunisations offered to students at council immunisation clinics. Potentially fatal, serious infectious disease such as chicken pox, whooping cough and measles are rare because of the benefits of immunisation. “Life is busier and busier these days and sadly that often means people struggle to find the time to take care of their health as well as managing all of life’s other responsibilities. “Clinics operate right across Ipswich and no appointment is necessary, so there are no barriers to better health. “These clinics were extremely popular in 2012 and the first half of this year. That’s why we are continuing to offer families simple and convenient preventative health options.” For more information about the benefits immunisation has for your and your family’s health visit www.health.qld. gov.au/immunisation For more information about these clinics including operating hours and locations visit www.ipswich.qld.gov.au

A message from the Mayor’s Desk BY THE MAYOR - PAUL PISASALE Grab your tickets and don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness racing at its finest with the 2013 Coates Hire Ipswich 360 from July 26-28. If there’s one thing I love about winter in Ipswich it’s all the exciting racing events happening around the region, including the Ipswich Cup last month. Every year the V8 Supercar Championships at Queensland Raceway attracts thousands residents and visitors to our region with plenty of thrills and spills for racing fans, as well as entertainment and attractions for the whole family. As well as all the exciting racing action, there’s plenty of off-track entertainment in the Disney Pixar’s Fun Zone where children can meet ‘Mack the Transporter.’ Tickets are on sale now through Ticketek and children under 12 receive free entry. Getting to the track won’t be a problem with shuttle buses operating to and from the Ipswich Train Station on Bell St, which is free when you show your event ticket. Young people in for more fun and learning at Ipswich Art Gallery Young residents will be the beneficiaries of an ambitious program of events, workshops and educational programs that will spark their imaginations thanks to the Ipswich Art Gallery. Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said these plans highlighted the vital role the gallery plays in the community and the benefit it brings to residents. “Ipswich Art Gallery is a contemporary and dynamic gallery that does far more in the community than stage interesting and blockbuster exhibitions,” Councillor Pisasale said. “It is also a provider of high quality and engaging educational programs and provides an outlet for young people to explore their own creativity.” In October this year, over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, the Gallery will play host to the popular Robot Wars program. Comprising of three days of robot making workshops, staged robot battles and a brutal finals series, Robot Wars will teach young people about the growing field of robotics and provide entertainment for the whole family. From pre-schools to universities, the Gallery plays host to a huge range of groups making use of its facilities for learning. At an average of three bookings a week the budget allocates funds to support the Gallery’s work with educational groups of all ages. “Art is not just on a wall to be looked at, for people wishing to engage more deeply with the creative process the Gallery provides approximately 40 art workshops each year,” Councillor Pisasale said. “These workshops range from landscape painting for adults to drawing classes for young children with something for everyone in between.”

One of the questions often asked of me these days is “How do we build a happy and secure family?” Tacked on the end (but rarely stated) is concern that modern technology and social networking are tearing apart families, and parents – or grandparents - are finding it almost impossible to sustain a connection to the family. In fact, some pundits are even suggesting that the traditional notion of “family” has already gone, along with the dinosaurs. It’s an interesting question to consider, whether we still believe in family as the building block of society. Most of us will create a family at some stage in our lives – we’ll make a commitment to a partner, bring children into the world, and raise them to have some sense of connection to their historical forebears. Websites such as Ancestry.com are becoming increasingly popular as people trace their family roots. Central to this search is peeling back the layers of stories that bring to life the journeys of our forebears, and tell us a bit about who they were and what their lives were like. Sharing these stories with our kids provides many opportunities for consolidating family values, strengthening personal qualities we want them to develop, and giving them a sense of place and identity in their complex worlds. When we give kids this sense of being part of something bigger than just themselves, they reap enormous emotional benefits including higher self-esteem, better social skills, and increased tolerance. In addition, it strengthens family cohesiveness. Setting up time where you can construct and share narratives about your family is the way to build a happy and resilient family. For example, Robyn Fivush developed a measure called the “Do You Know?” scale that asked children to answer 20 questions about their families. Examples included: Do you know where your grandparents grew up? Do you know where your mum and dad went to high school? Do you know where your parents met? Do you know an illness or something really terrible that happened in your family? Do you know the story of your birth? Research showed that the more children knew about their family’s history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem and the more successfully they believed their families functioned. The “Do You Know?” scale turned out to be the best single predictor of children’s emotional health and happiness. Another powerful way to build family narratives is to share life experiences. Holidays, big family get-togethers, weekly family dinners, exchanging photos of events and creating family storybooks are ways of building family traditions and extending narratives. In particular, these should reflect not only the good events, but also the tough challenges faced by all families at times so kids learn how families bounce back after adversity.
Digital training at Redbank Plains Library Ipswich City Council will continue its support for the city’s specialised internet training facility at the Redbank Plains Library over the coming year. Established in January the Ipswich Digital Hub has proved popular with the community with about 400 people taking part in group training sessions at the new training facility between January and May this year. There has also been a total of 205 people who have attended one-on-one training at the centre with approximately 950 visitors including drop ins to view and experience the NBN enabled applications such as an e-health demonstration and smart TV during the same period. “Ipswich residents can now access a range of programs co-ordinated by council’s new digital hub co-ordinator/ trainer,” Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor, David Pahlke said. “The co-ordinator/trainer is working with council throughout the program to maximise the benefits of the Ipswich Digital Hub for the local community.” Courses on offer through the Ipswich Digital Hub include: • basic computer use, getting connected to the internet, searching the internet, using email; • using google calendar and google docs; • shopping and banking online; • social networking; • sharing photos and video online;
• • • •
writing stories and publish online using blogs; watching tv and listening to radio online; join courses online and; making video phone calls. “Residents are being given hands-on support for free to improve their digital literacy skills in the digital age. “This will help them to become more familiar and comfortable with using new technologies and applications in the future. “Ipswich’s libraries are already multi-functional spaces which are home to a range of services and resources and the Ipswich Digital Hub will allow them to further assist the community. “Council is pleased to have been able to work in partnership with the Federal Government to establish this new facility in Ipswich.” Ipswich is one of 40 communities Australia-wide selected by the Federal Government for the establishment of a digital hub. Funding of $360,000 was provided to Ipswich City Council for the establishment of the centre. Individual training sessions are also available at the hub. Bookings are required for all services at the hub and can be made on 3495 7405. Bookings for upcoming courses are required and can be made online at blog.library.ipswich.qld.gov.au/ll/digitalhub or by emailing digitalhub@ipswich.qld.gov.au.

Now we are in the colder months of the year, many of our pets will be starting to feel a little bit stiffer than usual, most likely due to osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a disease that affects both cats and dogs of all age groups, but generally is seen in older pets. Osteoarthritis in our pets is the same disease that affects humans, whereby there is a progressive deterioration of the joint cartilage which is usually the result of ongoing wear and tear, injury and joint instability. Joints most commonly affected include elbows, hips, shoulders, knees and lower spine regions. Over time, the cartilage covering the ends of the bones within the joints is worn away, exposing nerve endings and creating pain, the joint fluid becomes very watery and so doesn’t provide adequate lubrication and inflammation results within the joint. In bad cases, the body will start to grow new bone in a bid to create better joint stability, but this can lead to decreased range of motion within the joint or even fractured pieces of new bone floating within the joint. Pets more at risk of developing osteoarthritis include elderly pets, larger breeds predisposed to hip dysplasia, overweight animals and those that have suffered a joint injury in the past, especially those resulting in joint surgery. Being able to tell if your pet has osteoarthritis can be tricky, and an examination by a veterinarian is a good place to start. Often diagnosis requires x-rays of the affected joints. Most common signs of osteoarthritis include pain or stiffness when rising or sitting, inability to climb stairs or jump on/off things, unwilling to go for walks, unwilling to play and run around and in some cases limping. These days, there are lots of things we can do for animals with osteoarthritis. The simplest thing includes weight loss and a warm sheltered bed raised up off the ground. The next is the addition of oral joint protection supplements to your pet’s diet. These supplements contain glucosamine, chondroitin, fish oils and green lip mussel. If arthritis is more advanced, injections can be administered by a veterinarian which increase joint fluid production and decrease the rate of cartilage destruction and this provides pain relief and increases mobility of the joints. In more severe cases, and at cooler times in the year, your pet might also require more substantial pain relief in the form of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) or an opioid. Latest treatment option is stem cell therapy. It uses dogs own stem cells that are injected into the affected joints to rebuild cartilage, helping to improve quality of life. Supportive therapies such as physio and acupuncture can also be used alongside the medical therapies to relieve discomfort.

City Budget 2013-2014 Individuals, families, businesses, cities and nations need to carefully plan their short and long term budgets. Council has announced what we believe is a responsible budget for 2013-2014. If you would like a copy please visit www.ipswich.qld.gov.au or contact my office on 3818 3100. A budget gives direction and discipline. Council will work hard to ensure Ipswich City moves forward within the discipline of the 2013-2014 budget. Brisbane Roar V Melbourne Victory Ipswich has been given the opportunity to host a National A League pre-season game between two of the most popular A League Teams. Brisbane Roar will play Melbourne Victory at North Ipswich Reserve with kick off at 3pm. Robelle Domain Stage Two Robelle Domain at Springfield Central has been a great success since it opened two years ago. Council was hoping to construct a $15million extension if all levels of Government contributed $5 million. Due to the disaster recover still happening around our State, the State Government were unable to contribute. Council and the Federal Government decided to proceed with a $10million dollar build. I thank Federal Members Shayne Neumann MP and Bernie Ripoll MP for working with me to make this a reality. Ipswich Cares - September For the last seven years, Ipswich Cares, in partnership with Compassion Australia, has raised funding in the month of September for a humanitarian need. This year we will be raising funds for water filters and also help to construct a community building in Nepal. If you have a business and would like to be involved in September or if you would like to be involved in a walk from Rosewood to Springfield Central on Sunday 8th September (Approx 50km) please contact my office on div1office@ ipswich.qld.gov.au or 3818 3100 and we will send you the details. National Seniors Update Goodna/Redbank Branch
by Vera Somerwil Branch President
July is half over and we are gradually enjoying longer days, but there is still a little cooler weather ahead yet. What has the club been busy with during the last month? Seventeen club members turned up to the Food Industry Café at Redbank for coffee, cake and plenty of lively conversation. At the June branch meeting we were entertained by the Brisbane Apollo Choir. The Apollo choir is an all male choir with a great repertoire of songs from well known musical shows. Members travelled from as far away as North Lakes, but choir master Michelle, a local from Ipswich found the distance was less of a problem. The August Coffee Club morning will be held at the Queens Park Kiosk Ipswich on Wednesday 7th August commencing at 10.00am, please contact Brian on 3814 4095 to book your place. The club usually has a trip away to celebrate ‘Christmas in July’, this year we will be celebrating the event at the Goodna Leagues Club with music provided by the Ramblers. A number of activities are being planned for Seniors Week 17-24th August in the Ipswich District. Ipswich Council will be publishing their calendar soon. National Seniors have planned a coach tour to King Ludwig’s’ Restaurant at Maleny with lunch and entertainment, on Wednesday 21st August. Bookings are still open for this trip. However, the usual monthly branch meeting will still be held on Tuesday 20th August, with a forum on ‘The Queensland Plan’. The Goodna/Redbank National Seniors meet on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, 9.30am for 10.00am. For further information please contact Val on 3297 5735.

EVERY YOUNG PERSON DESERVES A YOUNG LIFE Aged care is no place for any young person. Yet right now, more than 7,500 young Australians with high care needs are living in aged care. 700,000 more are being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support. Why? If you, or a loved one, were to suffer an accident or illness that left you, or them, in need of full-time care, there are currently few alternatives for care and housing available. Youngcare works to change this by building more age appropriate housing; financially assisting through At Home Care Grants; and providing information and advice through the Youngcare Connect hotline.
